What A Year To Look Forward To
We kicked things off here at Newmarket with the three-day bet365 Craven Meeting, a midweek bonanza with a habit for producing Classic clues. The meeting’s Craven Stakes and the Nell Gwyn Stakes gave the chance for colts and fillies with Guineas aspirations to test their mettle on the Rowley Mile in advance of this weekend’s QIPCO Guineas Festival
The proof is in the pudding, with last year’s Nell Gwyn winner Cachet following up in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas for George Boughey, while each the last two Craven winners Native Trail (2022) and Master Of The Seas (2021) both went on to finish second in the following month’s
QIPCO 2000 Guineas
We kick off May with another three-day meeting, the QIPCO Guineas Festival, which brings us the first two Classics of the season, with the 2000 Guineas for the colts and the 1000 Guineas for the fillies It’s been a vintage era for the Classics and hopefully we unearth a horse to follow in the footsteps of Sea The Stars (2009), Frankel (2011), Minding (2016) and Love (2020).
The highlight of the summer is the Boodles July Festival, where we’re never short of a story or two. However, all of the focus this year will inevitably be on the legendary Frankie Dettori, who’s in his final year of riding The July Cup is the last British Group One missing from his CV and there will be some reception for racing’s most popular figure if he can finally pull it off.
It would be rude to just focus on one race, though, as the July Festival is chock-full of top-class racing across the three days Both the Group Two July Stakes and the Group One Falmouth Stakes regularly feature quality fields, while the bet365 Bunbury Cup is a hugely popular (and competitive) curtain-raiser for the big one.
Attention turns to the bet365 Cambridgeshire meeting as we head into the autumn, as we host our hugely popular three-day meeting. This meeting encapsulates the here and now as well as looking to the future, with the ultra-competitive handicap complimented by some top two-year-old contests. Held on a blockbuster Saturday afternoon of this meeting are the Group One Middle Park Stakes for the colts and the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes for the fillies Run over six furlongs, both races are seen as early pointers for the following year’s Guineas.
Continuing the theme of looking forward is the Dubai Future Champions Festival, on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October. The clue is very much in the name, but this weekend is where future stars are born and is headlined by the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes One of the most prestigious two-year-old races in Europe, this race boasts one of the most impressive roll of honours around and hopefully the next Classic winner is just around the corner
