SUN MARCH 23 9/8c

PREMIERES

FOR OUR MEMBERS ...

Greetings WCMU family! My name is Tina Sawyer, and in case we haven’t met, I’m your news-lovin’, coffee-chuggin’ host of WCMU’s Morning Edition! Nice to meet you! But, aside from being your ‘human alarm clock’ every weekday morning, another one of my passions is learning about history. So, imagine my joy when I was asked to write a letter to all of you for the very first time for the month of March: Women’s History Month! Huzzah!

I wanted to take a moment to share with you the story of an incredible woman in American history—Lillian Gilbreth. Born in 1878, Lillian was not only a pioneering psychologist and industrial engineer, but also a trailblazer for women in the workforce during a time when such careers were largely dominated by men. Lillian’s innovative spirit led her to revolutionize the field of time and motion study, enabling businesses to improve efficiency and productivity. But her impact goes far beyond numbers and calculations! As a mother of TWELVE, she effortlessly integrated her professional pursuits with her family life, advocating for the importance of work-life balance long before it became…cool.

Lillian Gilbreth’s story teaches us that with passion, resilience, and a commitment to our ideals, we can change the world around us and make a lasting impact You can also make a continued connection with your community by donating to WCMU Public Radio during our Spring Membership Drive, March 13th through March 20th. Your investment allows WCMU to keep you informed by connecting you to the facts, the people, and the stories that matter most! Your support makes a big difference! Be a part of the connection that informs and inspires at WCMU.org or call 800-999-5656 today. Thank you!

The Definitive Story of the Civil Rights Era

TUESDAY, MARCH 4 8:00 p.m.

On the MICHIGAN LEARNING CHANNEL

Before the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls in 1848, European colonial women lacked even the most basic rights, while Haudenosaunee women had a potent political and spiritual voice and authority in all aspects of their lives. The contact that the early suffragists had with Haudenosaunee women in New York state shaped their thinking and had a vital impact on their struggle for equality that is taken for granted today.

The film follows Mohawk Bear Clan Mother Louise Herne and Professor Sally Roesch Wagner as they seek to correct the historical narrative about the origins of women’s rights in the United States.

MICHIGAN CONNECTION

ST JOHN STREET: STORY OF A NEIGHBORHOOD

SATURDAYS at 4:30 p.m.

Many know the city of Flint, Michigan, as the birthplace of General Motors. News of its well-paying jobs inspired African Americans, looking for opportunities denied to them in the South, to migrate to Flint. When they first arrived, there weren’t many places they could live except for one area, which would become known as the St. John Street neighborhood. As the need for workers grew, more African Americans made the move to Flint and helped turn the neighborhood into a thriving self contained community, full of neighbors who looked out for and knew one another. It was the urban center of Black culture in Flint. Despite the growing Black population, the residents of St. John weren’t allowed to move to other parts of the city. To make matters worse, the city’s Master Plan of 1960 called for the destruction of the neighborhood. Through the power of eminent domain, the city took their homes, destroyed businesses and decimated cultural landmarks. A deliberate choice was made to put a highway through a neighborhood that lacked the political power to say no, displacing over 7,000 people. Witness the birth and death of this Midwest neighborhood and the ways that Black Americans were first penned into — and then expelled from — their homes through urban renewal and highway construction.

Welcome to Skillsville! SKILLSVILLE, a dynamic PBS KIDS animated series created by Twin Cities PBS (TPT), will encourage kids ages 4-8 to “power up” the skills they need for future success by depicting the benefits of one of the most popular forms of media—video games.

Each episode of SKILLSVILLE begins with Cora, Dev, and Rae in the real world and focuses on one of the five life skills (feel, focus, organize, remember and think differently) they further cultivate in the game world. Once in the game, the characters appear as their avatars and summon Scout, a dog with dragonfly wings who flutters in and sniffs out trouble and supports them as they complete challenges. The players then work together and learn useful strategies to complete the task, win the game, and earn career-related badges. When they’re back in the real world, Cora, Dev, and Rae use the skills and strategies they’ve acquired in “Skillsville,” which are essential in helping people of all ages to learn, work, and manage the activities of daily living.

Connecting Communities Through Film: Indie Lens Pop-Up Comes

to Central and Northern Michigan

Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood initiative that connects communities through screenings of documentaries from PBS’s Independent Lens series. Since its launch in 2005, the program has hosted over 7,200 events nationwide, engaging around 430,000 people in conversations about important topics affecting local communities.

On MARCH 19th at 6PM, WCMU is bringing the Indie Lens Pop-Up experience to Mount Pleasant High School. The featured documentary is Home Court, which explores how Cambodian American basketball prodigy Ashley Chea’s life intensifies amid college recruitment, injury, and triumph. Conversation to follow the film featuring Dan Fodrocy, President of AREN Consulting.

Home Court, filmed over three years, is a coming-of-age story that relays the highs and lows of her immigrant family, surmounting racial and class differences, as well as personal trials that include a devastating knee injury. Despite the intensity of basketball recruiting, Ashley’s humor shines through and her natural talent inspires the support of those around her.

March’s live broadcast of the DSO features concertmaster Robyn Bollinger and Principal Cello Wei Yu pairing up for Brahms’s robust and riveting Double Concerto, the great composer’s last large orchestral work. Music Director Jader Bignamini leads the DSO in Beethoven’s lovely, lighthearted, and occasionally stormy Sixth Symphony plus Johann Strauss’s lilting and outrageously fun overture to Die Fledermaus.

SPECIAL from MARKETPLACE

Inside the Movement to Teach Kids About Money

For many adults, financial literacy wasn’t taught in school—but today, things are changing. Across the country, schools are increasingly integrating financial education into their curricula, teaching students essential life skills like budgeting, managing debt, and even gambling awareness. In fact, thirty-five states now require students to take a financial literacy class to graduate.

In this hour-long special from Marketplace, we take you inside the movement to equip young people with the tools they need to navigate the world of money. We visit schools across the nation to see firsthand how financial literacy classes are making a difference in students’ lives, helping them understand debt management, avoid common scams, and boost their credit scores.

Join us as we explore the impact of this growing trend, hear from educators, students, and financial experts, and examine whether these programs are truly setting up the next generation for success in managing their personal finances.
