WED SEPT 18 8PM
As I enter my 17th year as a Corporate Support Representative, and my 43rd year as host of Homespun, this is my first time writing to you!
Volunteering and (now) working for WCMU has been an extraordinary journey. It all started when I was a member of the Wheatland Music Organization, WCMU’s John Sheffler came looking for someone to host a new local folk music program called Homespun
Many years (and many hosts) later, here I am, getting the opportunity to connect with you each week through the stories and traditions embedded in folk music, sharing my love of music and bringing us closer together.
As we look forward to more music and storytelling, I want to express my appreciation for your continued support of all the programs on WCMU Public Media.
It’s your enthusiasm and engagement that makes WCMU such a special place! Here’s to many more evenings spent together exploring the world through the universal language of music.

School is back in session! Explore different topics, such as coping with back-to-school anxieties and emotions, creating daily routines, and tackling common situations that arise with the start of school. Ease the transition with some fun lunch box or after school snacks and downtime activities.
For most of us, our lives involve a series of patterns — routines we perform almost every day, like stopping at the same place each day for coffee on the way to work. This is also very true for children. While we play a part in creating routines in our children’s lives, we may not fully realize the role they play in young children’s development.
Consistent routines provide comfort and a sense of safety to young children. Following a schedule each day makes children feel safer and happier, which often leads to better behavior and cooperation. When they know what to expect, and what’s expected of them, kids feel more comfortable and confident about what lies ahead.
BY DEBORAH FARMER KRIS
Fred Rogers once said, “When children know ahead of time what’s going to happen — and not happen — they can prepare themselves for what’s coming. They can think about it and get used to their feelings about it.”
It takes a lot of energy to adjust to a new routine and get to know new teachers and classmates. As one of my favorite kindergarten teachers reminds families, it takes most children six weeks to adjust to a new school year. Those after school tantrums are normal and don’t mean they are having a terrible time at school!
Children read our emotions for cues about how they should react. If we express our confidence in them, they will pick up on this.
The parent-teacher relationship is so key to helping kids thrive. If you notice your child struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, reach out to your child’s teacher. If you have questions about the classroom or your child’s progress, reach out! You do not need to wait for the first parent-teacher conference to make contact.
Ray and Maryellen Miller have been avid supporters of public media throughout their lives. Ray, a proud graduate of Berkley High School, holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Michigan State University, specializing in Radio-Television-Film. Maryellen, who grew up in Battle Creek, graduated from St. Philips High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Mathematics from Michigan State University and a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Ferris State University.
Ray’s journey in public media began in 1958 as a student at MSU, even before the establishment of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), National Public Radio (NPR), or the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Over the decades, he witnessed and contributed to the tremendous growth and evolution of public media, understanding the vital role community support plays in sustaining these essential resources.
Both Ray and Maryellen have a deep appreciation for public radio and television. They frequently listen to the radio and engage with Mystery and Masterpiece programs on PBS, enjoying the rich variety of content available on WCMU Public TV.
The Miller’s commitment to community extends beyond media. They support numerous non-profits, Benzie Spartan Scholarship Fund, Munson Medical Foundation, Benzie Shores Public Library, and the Elizabeth Lane Oliver Art Center. Although they no longer serve on boards or committees, their impact remains significant through their continued support.
Ray and Maryellen also cherish a variety of activities such as camping, traveling, bicycling, hiking, golfing, and gardening. Their story is a testament to a life dedicated to enriching community and culture through unwavering support of public media and other philanthropic efforts

Elections can be hard to follow, with their shouting matches, shifting poll numbers, and countless hot button issues. Abortion, the changing climate, and foreign policy are just a few of the ones already grabbing our attention. WCMU, along with the rest of the NPR Network, is here to guide you through it all and keep you on track through election night – and its aftermath.
Starting here in Michigan, we’ll get you close to local candidates and voters to see how the issues are being lived and felt in our community. Then, with the help of our Network, we’ll zoom out to put those same perspectives in a bigger context, with analysis. So you’ll get a more complete understanding of what’s happening and what’s at stake.
Elections will always have their share of surprises, but follow along with us and you’ll be keeping an ear on the pulse of the nation. Listen for the latest election news, every day on WCMU

NPR is remembering longtime correspondent Ina Jaffe, who died on August 1, 2024.
Known for her matter-of-fact reporting style, Ina had a voice that made you listen. She reported on politics, crime, and even created a beat exploring the topic of aging – something she saw a need for as she traveled the country.
Former NPR host Renee Montagne worked with Ina for decades. She told NPR Ina was “a tough journalist in the classic way. She wanted you to tell her the truth and she wanted to get it right. She’s an example for everybody.”
Ina had been open about living with metastatic breast cancer over the last few years. Her husband, Lenny Kleinfeld, was at her side when she passed. She was 75.
