We hope your favorite programs and some new WCMU discoveries are included in that list. Please consider a gift to WCMU during this season of giving, for all that you receive from WCMU throughout the year.
WCMU Public Radio is proud to announce the 2024 WCMU Foodraiser sponsor is Mercantile Bank. When you donate to WCMU Public Radio between December 3 and 9, you also trigger the Gift of Food from Mercantile Bank. Dave and Sue Karmon have shared a life rooted in education, service, and a deep commitment to their community in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Both grew up in Bridgeport, MI, and graduated from Central Michigan University (CMU). They married after college, and began careers in education. They have three daughters and six grandchildren.
Sue, with a Bachelor of Science degree from CMU, taught in Saginaw Township and Guam before focusing on her family. Her charitable work has extended from McLaren Central Michigan Hospital to the Strickler Center, with additional outreach through the Faith Weavers of St. Mary, a small-faith community in the Roman Catholic tradition. In addition, Sue finds joy in her book club and family time.
Sue & Dave Carmon
Dave earned both a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Science in Accounting at CMU, as well as a PhD from the University of Nebraska. His career began in secondary education in Saginaw, Guam, and Scottville before transitioning to academia as a Professor of Accounting at CMU. Today, retired, Dave serves on the Board of Directors for Friends of Isabella Seniors, continuing to make a difference locally. In addition, he’s a member of the Mid-Michigan Woodcrafters Club and enjoys fishing and social gatherings.
Together, the Karmon’s cherish their roles as grandparents, watching their three daughters’ children grow and thrive. They support a few local charities in the Mt. Pleasant area, including the Isabella County Restoration House, Christmas Outreach, Friends of Isabella Seniors, and the Community Compassion Network Food Pantry.
For around 40 years, the Karmon’s have been dedicated listeners of CMU Public Radio and viewers of PBS. Dave starts his day with Morning Edition and tunes in to All Things Considered in the afternoon, with Saturday programs like Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, Planet Money, and The Moth Radio Hour being among his favorites. On PBS, Antiques Roadshow, Midsomer Murders, Father Brown, and various shows on Nova and Masterpiece are top picks.
Dave and Sue believe that public broadcasting offers diverse perspectives and programs that commercial media cannot. “Public Broadcasting provides a unique and valuable service,” Sue says, “and it’s important for listeners to support it.” She continues, “We have spent most of our adult life in Mt. Pleasant. We know many good people in this area and have made lasting friends with a lot of them. Many of the voices we hear on Public Radio are like old friends too. We do not know the individuals personally, but it is a comfort to hear local people hosting programs.”

As the year draws to a close, so too does one of WCMU’s most beloved weekly segments, The Children’s Bookshelf. Since its inception in 2006, this program has brought the magic of children’s literature to life, inspiring young readers and parents alike across Michigan. The final episodes of The Children’s Bookshelf will air Sunday, December 22 at 8:37 a.m. and Thursday, December 26 at 11:04 a.m.
Founded by Dr. Sue Ann Martin, then Dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts at Central Michigan University, and Dr. Karen Adams, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, the segment was originally called Children’s Books – The Dean’s List. Tragically, Dr. Adams passed away in 2009, leaving Dr. Martin and Dr. Pamela Gates, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, to carry the program forward.
Throughout its run, The Children’s Bookshelf captivated audiences with engaging book selections, encouraging literacy, imagination, and a love of reading. Over the years, the program was guided by three talented producers: Susan McTaggartDennis, Ben Thorp, and Judy Wagley. Most recently, Judy and Sue Ann expanded the program’s reach through The Children’s Bookshelf On The Road, a community engagement effort that brought storytelling, song, creative movement, and dance to libraries and bookstores across Michigan. The program was also distributed nationally, and was heard on stations in New York, Kansas, and California.
“I will really miss working with the wonderful staff at WCMU Public Radio,” Martin said. “I have so enjoyed their friendship, knowledge and technical expertise over the years. In particular, I want to thank my producers—Susan, Ben and Judy.”
The Children’s Bookshelf wasn’t just a radio segment – it was an avenue for community connection and cultural enrichment. The program’s outreach initiatives especially resonated, showing the transformative power of bringing stories to life in real-time for children and families. The program underscored the impact of storytelling as a means of connection, learning and joy.
“Over the years many listeners including mothers, fathers, grandparents and teachers have stopped me on the street and in grocery stores to tell me how much the books we reviewed on WCMU Public Radio meant to their children,” said Martin. “They had either bought a copy of the book or borrowed it from the Public Library.”
As we bid farewell to The Children’s Bookshelf, we thank Dr. Sue Ann Martin and all who contributed to the program’s mission in sharing the world of children’s literature with WCMU listeners. Their work has left a lasting legacy – one that will continue to inspire young readers for years to come.
