FRESH SEASONS FAMILIAR FAVORITES

FOR OUR MEMBERS ...

As we welcome a new year, it brings with it a sense of renewal and the promise of exciting possibilities for change. At WCMU Public Media, we embrace this opportunity to reflect, grow, and innovate, while staying true to our mission of serving Central and Northern Michigan.

You may remember me as the former host of Destination Michigan. During my time in that role, I had the privilege of traveling to every corner of our beautiful state, meeting incredible people, and witnessing firsthand the unique stories, places, and traditions that make Michigan so special. Those experiences have stayed with me and are a big part of why I love what we do here at WCMU.

My journey with the station has come full circle—I left for a time but found myself drawn back by the important work we do, the wonderful people we serve, and the values we uphold. Now, in my role as Digital Media Coordinator, I’m thrilled to contribute in new ways to the storytelling and outreach that connect us to the communities we serve.

Local programming continues to be the heart of WCMU, bringing stories and entertainment that matter to our viewers. This year, Pressing Matters, hosted by Stefanie Mills, and Quiz Central, hosted by David Nicholas, will return with new episodes. These programs showcase the talent and passion of our local communities and reflect our commitment to delivering content that informs, educates, and inspires.

Thank you for being part of the WCMU family. Your support fuels everything we do, and I’m excited for all the possibilities that 2025 holds for us, together.

ON THE COVER ...

January kicks off with the highly anticipated season premieres of two beloved series. Follow the thrilling mysteries of a daring Victorian detective and the heartwarming adventures of a countryside veterinary team as they return with all-new episodes. Don’t miss these captivating stories that promise to intrigue, inspire, and delight viewers throughout the month.

Respectful Hellos: Learning Greetings

from an article

“When my kids visit their grandmother, they say “hello” to her in their own ways. One will run up to her, cover her with hugs and kisses, and spend time on her lap, hugging and chatting nonstop. My older child will pass her a handmade card and sit in a corner drawing pictures and writing notes for her. My mom loves both greetings equally. I tell my children that both ways of greeting are great as long as it works for the other person and respects their personal preferences.”

Help your child understand that people like to be greeted in different ways

In the “Alma’s Way” episode, “Hugs and Misses,” Alma is eager to give everyone a hug when they come through the door at a community event. Alma is used to hugging her family members when she greets them. But at the event, she learns that there are other ways of greeting people. For example, Alma hugs her friend Rafia, but Rafia doesn’t hug her back. Instead, Rafia says she prefers “the World’s Greatest High Five.” Alma is confused at first. But Alma listens to Rafia and gives her a high five instead. As Alma greets more guests at the event, she begins to realize that asking people how they want to be greeted — and listening to what they say — is a great way to learn more about them and to say hello in a friendly way.

Your child can decide how they want to be greeted, too

Talking with your child about how to greet others is an opportunity to support them in learning about what they want and don’t want when it comes to their own bodies. Discussing ways to greet others is a way to explore their preferences and to understand that other people may have different preferences. It’s also a way to support them in making decisions and speaking up for themselves.

Connecting Communities Through

Film: Indie Lens Pop-Up Comes to Central and Northern Michigan

Indie Lens Pop-Up is a neighborhood initiative that connects communities through screenings of documentaries from PBS’s Independent Lens series. Since its launch in 2005, the program has hosted over 7,200 events nationwide, engaging around 430,000 people in conversations about important topics affecting local communities.

This is an exciting opportunity for residents to come together, watch a powerful documentary, and engage in meaningful discussions about the impact of public libraries in their communities and beyond.

This winter, WCMU is bringing the Indie Lens Pop-Up experience to central and northern Michigan. The featured documentary is Free for All: The Public Library, which explores the vital role public libraries have played in shaping American society and how they continue to serve as essential sanctuaries for people of all backgrounds.

BIG IDEAS, BOLD QUESTIONS

TED Radio Hour investigates the biggest questions of our time with the help of the world’s greatest thinkers. Can we preserve our humanity in the digital age? Where does creativity come from? And what’s the secret to living longer? In each episode, host Manoush Zomorodi explores a big idea through a series of TED talks and original interviews, inspiring us to learn more about the world, our communities, and most importantly, ourselves.

POSSIBLE RETURNS to WCMU

WEDNESDAYS in JANUARY @ 8:00 p.m.

Possible, the award-winning series on Artificial Intelligence and the future of technology, returns to WCMU on Wednesday evenings in January.

Hosted by Reid Hoffman and Aria Finger, Possible offers listeners grounded and speculative takes on how technology — and, in particular AI — is transforming the future. Each episode features an interview with an ambitious builder or deep thinker on a topic.

Possible will be airing in place of TED Radio Hour on Wednesdays in January. TED Radio Hour will still be heard Saturdays at noon, and it will return to its Wednesday night time slot in February.

Upcoming episodes of Possible

JAN. 1: Sal Khan on the future of K-12 Education

JAN. 8: Kara Swisher on AI, media, and accountability

JAN. 15: Kevin Scott on AI and humanism

JAN. 22: Anne-Marie Slaughter on the future of the care economy

JAN. 29: Siddhartha Mukherjee on the future of disease and diagnostics
