February is a month dedicated to reflection, celebration, and education—especially as we honor Black History Month. At WCMU, we are proud to showcase programming that highlights the contributions, struggles, and stories of Black Americans throughout history. Among this month’s compelling lineup is The Other Moonshot, airing Wednesday nights at 8 p.m on WCMU Public Radio. This eye-opening series reveals the little-known story of Black aerospace engineers in Los Angeles who played a pivotal role in the Apollo missions—despite facing tremendous barriers.
On the television side, be sure to tune in at 9p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 11 and 18 for Great Migrations: A People on the Move. This limited series explores the second wave of the Great Migration, examining how Northern and Western Black communities developed and transformed the cultural and political power of Black America. Later in the month, we present American Experience: NAACP and Its Architects on Tuesday, February 25 at 9 p.m. This film centers on the story of Walter White—one of the NAACP’s most influential yet often overlooked leaders—whose efforts paved the way for significant civil rights victories.
Every day here at WCMU, we aim to bring you fact-based news, engaging storytelling, and civil conversations that foster understanding and empathy. With your support, we strive to create a space for thoughtful dialogue—sharing stories that bring us closer as a community. By exploring our shared history, we learn not only about where we’ve been, but also about where we’re going.
Thank you for your continued support. We hope these programs will inspire you to delve deeper into the people, places, and events that have shaped our world.
MIKE HORACE RADIO PROGRAM & OPERATIONS MANAGER

TUESDAYS at 9:00 p.m.
Great Migrations: A People on the Move examines the powerful influence of Black migration on American culture and society. While the first large migration was a forced journey from Africa in bondage, voluntary migrations in the 20th and 21st centuries have significantly reshaped the nation. This series explores the first and second waves of the Great Migration from the South to the North during the two World Wars, the “New Great Migration” of African Americans returning home to the South of their ancestors since the 1970s, and the “Next Great Migration” marked by the historic and growing influx of African and Caribbean immigration in the 20th and 21st centuries. The film powerfully demonstrates that movement is a defining feature of the Black American experience.
Learn about the second wave of the Great Migration when Northern and Western Black communities matured through migration and transformed the cultural and political power of Black America.

A CELEBRATION CONCERT
WES MONTGOMERY: A CELEBRATION CONCERT honors the centennial of the Hoosier-born artist whose guitar sounds defined a generation of jazz music and left a lasting global musical legacy. During his career, Montgomery won two Grammy Awards and was named “Jazz Man of the Year” by Record World in 1967. He played alongside many of the greatest names in music, including Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Quincy Jones, and fellow Hoosier Freddie Hubbard. His sound is defined by the iconic way he would play his guitar using the direct touch of his thumb on the strings, producing a softer, more melodic tone.

COMING WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN FEBRUARY
As America seethes with civil unrest in the 1960s, three men in Los Angeles play a key role in getting us to the moon. You may think you know everything about our race to space. But there is still, even after all this time, a version of the story that’s never been heard. This is the story of the Black aerospace engineers in Los Angeles who worked on the Apollo missions – despite barely being allowed in the room.
WEDNESDAY EVENINGS at 8:00 p.m., on WCMU
In 1948, a young couple set out to do what was considered a rite of passage for many middle-class Americans at the time –they bought land in a leafy suburb, built their dream home and left the city. James and Frances Hughes had no idea that their move to this part of Minnesota would motivate segregationists to ramp up housing restrictions.
In this limited Marketplace series, Host Lee Hawkins investigates how a secret nighttime business deal unlocked the gates of a community called Maplewood for dozens of Black families seeking better housing, schools, and safer neighborhoods. He’ll highlight stories of families collaborating and overcoming discrimination in real estate and banking. They include executives, entrepreneurs, musicians, at least one NFL star and a former US Presidential hopeful.
