For Our Members ...
Central and northern Michigan is an enchanting place to live, undoubtedly you can agree with that— except for a few days here and there. Enjoying the rural splendor, rolling hills, and scenic vistas augments our quality of life in amazing ways.
As with so many other aspects of life, there are tradeoffs that come with the benefits. One such tradeoff is that Television and Radio signals must navigate this terrain to get to our receivers and provide the enjoyment and enlightenment that WCMU provides. Great TV and Radio reception can require some extra effort.
As we now start to see the leaves pop out and experience that deep seeded feeling of joy that it inspires, the downside for many of us is that TV reception can get a bit ‘dicey’. If we cut down all the trees, and flattened the hills, then the supercompact inside TV antennas might work for more than just a lucky few.
How much change in reception you get depends on what channel you are viewing, the species of tree, the size of the leaves, the details of the terrain in the path to your receiver, and a few other mind numbingly technical laws of physics. And if you have a failing LED light or some other appliance that’s creating electrical noise nearby, you’ll have difficulty enjoying reliably good reception until the appliance is repaired.
While we’d love to double the height of our transmitting antennas, and increase the power tenfold, there are government guidelines for power and towers. Currently, we should be ‘good enough’ for reception throughout our area. For most, that’s correct— but certainly not for everyone. Sometimes moving the entire antenna setup a few feet left or right can make an amazing difference, however illogical that may seem.
WCMU maintains twenty tower locations, nine relay microwave sites, fiber, and internet connections. A couple of these areas are only accessible in the winter by snowshoeing in. There are two of us transmitter guys traveling roughly 50,000 miles each to perform maintenance every year. We’re inventive and scrappy when it comes to fixing things. Your investment in WCMU makes a difference.
Thanks for watching and listening to WCMU!

Thank You to our Graduating Seniors
Addelyn
Wachter (Addy)
I will be graduating with a major in photojournalism and a minor in cultural and global studies. After graduation, I want to work with non-profits, taking photos and videos for them. I also want to travel overseas for work if possible. I love to travel! I have been to South Africa, Uganda, Italy, and I have other trips set up in the near future to Iceland and other countries in Africa. Telling stories of people in different cultures is my passion!
Ben Jodway
WCMU has been integral to my college career. I have worked as a reporter for nearly two years, and I have learned so much in terms of interviewing, writing stories, and the news industry itself. I am proud of my work, and I could not have done it without the fantastic support of WCMU’s staff. My future after graduation is a little murky right now, but I know I will be pursuing journalism to the best of my ability.
Jill Harrington
Jill Harrington has been with WCMU since summer 2022. During her time here, she has interviewed people from all over our listening area, including teachers, local business owners and suicide prevention advocates. Her time writing about local communities has given her a larger appreciation for Michigan, and the range of people that make it a great place to call home. After graduating, Harrington plans to explore her love for journalism outside of the state, continuing to write and report while also practicing photo and video. She is thankful to have been given a chance to grow in her craft at WCMU.
Luke Moorehead
WCMU Public Radio host Luke Moorehead is graduating with a major in Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts, with a Minor in Psychology. Luke very much enjoys working in radio, and plans to continue working in the broadcasting industry after graduation.
Zach Parfeniuk
Zach graduated from CMU with a bachelor’s in sociology and criminal justice, with a minor in psychology, in December 2022. He is now working as a digital processing specialist at Clarke Historical Library at CMU, and plans to attend graduate school for a master’s degree in social work. Zach says he’ll fondly remember his almost 3 years at WCMU, both the job itself and his coworkers.
Samuel
Sam is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts with a minor in Art. After graduation, he plans to work as an audio editor and mixer. He hopes to someday work as a Foley Artist making sound effects for film and television.

Gale L. Sherbeck lived in Michigan his whole life. He was born August 13, 1944 at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mount Clemens. After WWII, Gale’s family moved to Bay City and as an adult Gale lived in Midland. He spent several years in the Merchant Marines and later worked at Bell Telephone Company.
Gale’s life was forever changed when he was struck by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle. He was left with extensive injuries that halted his career. After the accident, Gale moved to rural Lincoln. He enjoyed the slow pace of the small community and made many friends. Gale was known by many as a kind and generous man who was always willing to help a friend or neighbor in need.
His philanthropy extended beyond individuals to various organizations such as a Native American group in the southwestern US, Sunrise Mission in Alpena, Animal Shelters around northern Michigan, Hope Shores Alliance of Alpena and WCMU Public Media.
He dabbled in various hobbies over the years, including snowmobiling, Christmas tree farming, photography, wood carving and woodworking, and foremost his love of motorcycles and riding. He enjoyed listening to NPR, especially while woodworking.
Gale planned for his generosity to continue to make an impact past his life. Due to his forward thinking, upon his death in October 2022, Gale was able to leave a substantial gift to WCMU Public Media through his estate plans. Support through estate plans makes a big impact in the station’s overall budget. WCMU will forever be grateful for Gale’s generosity, friendship and inclusion in his estate plans.

Special Broadcast: Friday, May 5th at 10:40 a.m. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra performs Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony. Beethoven’s Eighth is considered one of his most jovial works and contains some of the composer’s cleverest musical humor. Principal Trombone Kenneth Thompkins performs the world premiere of a concerto written for him by Carlos Simon, based on Underground Railroad conductor William Still’s account of the hardships and struggles of the enslaved seeking freedom at any cost. The program opens with Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Join us for the DSO live under the direction of maestro Jader Bignamini.
Over the years, The World has carved out a niche by offering a unique perspective on daily news: covering American issues and events through the eyes of foreign observers, and contextualizing foreign affairs for American listeners. We maintain a steady focus on global events and issues, reminding listeners that the US is not isolated and that powers centered in Moscow, Kyiv, Beijing, Pyongyang, Riyadh, Istanbul, and elsewhere are reframing the global order every day.
