It was a different world 50 years ago, in 1972 Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman elected to Congress, the Mariner 9 spacecraft was orbiting Mars, the Equal Rights Amendment made its way to a vote, Bobby Fischer won the world chess championship against Russia, M*A*S*H debuted, the Watergate story broke, gas was .36 cents a gallon, bell-bottom jeans were in and WCMU started its radio service.
As we celebrate our 50th anniversary and look to the future, one thing is clear –providing fact-based news, information and local reporting is more important than ever. There’s an increasing demand for trusted news and a deep concern for our democracy, no matter your political affiliation. According to a recent NPR/ PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, 83% of Americans think there is a serious threat to the future of the nation’s democracy, an increase from 77% in July ’22. Half of the 46 counties we serve no longer have a newspaper, leaving many across our listening area in a “news desert.”
We conducted a thorough review and evaluation of our audience data. The research showed consistency across our schedule is key to serving both classical and news audiences effectively. After careful consideration and analysis, we’re excited to announce beginning March 1st you’ll have expanded news coverage and a 24/7 classical service!
The WCMU
Classical service will showcase young musicians through “From the Top,” “SymphonyCast” presents symphonies from around the world, “Footlight Parade: Sounds of the American Musical is a celebration of classic Broadway and Hollywood musicals from the early 20th century to current hits, “Pipedreams” highlights pipe organ music and “Performance Today” features concerts, interviews, and features. This and so much more on your 24/7 classical music service.
Also, this month on television you’ll see our newest local production, “50 Years Later: The Impact of Title IX” which features legendary coaches, Marcy Weston, Margo Jonker, Cristy Freese and Sue Guevara. And you won’t want to miss the final season of Sanditon starting on March 19th at 9 p.m. We’ll have a sneak-peek screening of Sanditon in Mt. Pleasant before it airs so keep an eye out for the date on our social channels and in the e-newsletter.
Thank you for your ongoing support!

Peg Steward has been in Cadillac for the last decade. She raised five children in Bloomfield Hills. However, her husband’s job gave their family opportunities to live abroad in Europe for several years. One of Peg’s children, Beth Garner, lives across the street from Peg, with her husband Bob Beth and Bob have been married for 41 years, have a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
Being family isn’t necessarily a recipe for friendship and common ground. However, these three have a beautiful relationship and several things in common. One thing being, WCMU Public TV. Peg and Beth both love Antiques Roadshow and Finding Your Roots. And, you might recognize Bob from episodes of Destination Michigan, Ask the Specialists: DNR and, what is now, Michigan Out of Doors.
The three of them can also agree on the importance of giving back to their community and non-profits that have given back to them. “Many Thursday nights when I would head to WCMU to do live fundraising, Peg would send a very generous check with me with a reminder that we must support the things we love.”, Bob remembers.
Though Bob is not as heavily involved in productions as he used to be, you can still catch him on air. In fact, Bob is hosting “Ask the DNR” April 6th at 7 p.m. on WCMU. You can also find Bob hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Peg and Beth are both active members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and last year Beth was appointed to their national American Indians Committee. Beth also spends her time volunteering at her church, playing the guitar and walking their dog Theo. Peg remains a faithful Lion’s football fan.
Beth said, “As mom’s sight continues to diminish and she’s in the second half of her nineties it’s hearing the familiarity of her favorite PBS shows that adds quality and joy and smiles to her life. That’s exactly why my mother, Bob and I continue to support WCMU.”

The Catalan Atlas is a world map made in 1375 for King Charles V of France (r. 1364–1380) and is today housed in the National Library of France. A table map, the Atlas measures about 10 feet long and 2 feet high and is famous for being the oldest surviving map to draw extensively on Marco Polo’s Description of the World. In this illustrated lecture, Mark Cruse will discuss the Atlas’s origins and sources, its innovative depictions of major places and peoples, its relationship to the library of King Charles V, and its place in the history of cartography.

An easy cherry hand pie recipe using homemade crust and fresh, in-season red cherries. Easy enough for kids to make on their own.
Prep time: 10 Minutes Cook time: 20 Minutes Total time: 30 Minutes Yield: 8
Filling:
1 cup chopped cherries
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons corn starch
1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
pinch of salt
Crust:
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour plus more for dusting
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter
1 tablespoon sugar
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon vinegar
Up to 2 tablespoons water
Egg wash:
one egg mixed with 2 teaspoons of water.
1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
2. To make the filling, mix the chopped cherries with the sugar, corn starch, lemon zest, and salt.
3. To make the crust, add the flour, butter, sugar, and salt to a food processor and pulsate until the mixture resembles fine corn meal.
4. Add the vinegar and 1/2 tablespoon water and pulsate again. Add more water if needed. Dough should be workable but not sticky.
5. On a flour dusted surface, roll and cut the dough into small 4 inch circles that are 1/16-inch thick.
6. Spoon a tablespoon of filling on to one circle of dough. Place another dough circle on top of the filling and crimp it down with a fork until the edges are sealed. Repeat this until all the dough is used up.
7. Cut a “X” on top of each unbaked pie.
8. Brush each pie top with egg wash.
9. Place the pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
10. Bake for 20 minutes and allow the pies to cool 10 minutes before serving.

Ever since the program launched in 2017, 1A’s goal has been to act as a national mirror, taking time to help America look at itself and to ask what it wants to be. 1A looks at both what divides and connects us, and we cover more than just the news. Our guests and conversations embrace pop culture, art, sports, and humor. Our name is inspired by the First Amendment. The five freedoms, as set out in the Constitution, are the rules of the road. The First Amendment protects free speech and a free press. It allows 1A to explore the most important issues facing the country.
Our conversations are better when you share what you know. You can leave a question or comment for 1A at (855) 236-1212.
Join Jenn White weekdays and hear the best of 1A at 9 p.m. weeknights on 1A Plus.

The World is public radio’s longest-running daily global news program. Our goal is to engage domestic US audiences with international affairs through human-centered journalism that consistently connects the global to the local and builds empathy for people around the world.
Your host Marco Werman offers a unique perspective on daily news: covering American issues and events through the eyes of foreign observers, and contextualizing foreign affairs for American listeners. The World team does this by consistently working to get direct access to original sources: people on the ground who participate in the events we describe.
Our key areas of focus are global security, women & gender, the environment, migration and public health. From frontline diplomats to refugees in crisis, from environmental scientists in the field to protesters putting their lives on the line and individuals grappling with the impact of global cyberculture, The World starts with individuals at the core of a story and expands from there.

“On Point is a rare public space where you hear nuanced explorations of complex topics live and in real time. It’s urgency and timeliness matched with depth.
On Point gives you richness, intelligence, and intensity right now. Plus, it’s live.
Hearing things get hashed out in real time is always a thrill. It’s a place where you’re going to learn, you’re going to be challenged, and you’re going to have fun, too.”

Left Right & Center serves as a “civilized yet provocative antidote to the selfcontained opinion bubbles that dominate political debate.”
The LRC team has been reflecting on what “civilized yet provocative” means in 2023. David Greene recently joined LRC as the new host, bringing a perfect balance of expertise and perspective from years of experience at NPR and a healthy obsession with the political landscape. Along with new and returning panelists familiar to many political observers, David will be taking on the tough, divisive issues you’re afraid to talk about with ANYONE — even your own family.
