For Our Members ...
Ever since I can remember, I don’t like total silence to do work. When I was in school, I had to have something on in the background. It could be the TV or the radio, but I actually can focus more and get more done when there is noise. Writing papers: music on. Outside cutting grass: music on. Cleaning up the house: TV on. I’m part of the traffic department here at WCMU. In laymen’s terms, it is the scheduling of program material for broadcast. At times, my inbox is full and I have an Excel sheet to get through. The next two hours will be head down – nose to the grindstone. You know what makes that time go by faster? “Hey Alexa, play WCMU”. I can respond to viewer emails while listening to Morning Edition. I’m literally listening to WCMU as I type this.
When I’m working in the kitchen or cleaning up the house, I use my Roku to play something on TV. Doing dishes while watching TV helps with those Sunday gravy stains from the lasagna.
Speaking of TV, we have some great programs coming this month. A new season of All Creatures Great and Small, A new season of Miss Scarlett and the Duke, and four new episodes of Finding Your Roots. January is full of new things, not unlike this laundry basket sitting by the dryer. Time to find out what Lidia Bastianich is making on Lidia’s Kitchen while ironing these shirts.
Thanks

My Greek Table with Diane Kochil with David Yetman Amanpour &Stephen and Barbara Ross live in Rodney with their cat Junco. Steve is originally from Big Rapids and Barb is from Cleveland. They met at Albion College and had some adventures before landing back in the Big Rapids area. Steve was in the Navy and was stationed in Rhode Island and Florida. He ultimately returned home to open a laundromat and dry-cleaning business with his father. Barb taught at Ferris State University in the health field.
As a child, Steve lived in Laos and Korea while his father worked for USAID: United States Agency for International Development. Steve and Barb stick to domestic travel these days. Specifically, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the occasional long road trip out west to visit Barb’s family. The Rosses have been married for 50 years.
Barb spends her spare time reading, doing yoga, and being involved with her church. She is an enthusiastic member of one book club and directs another called Novel Tea, that is sponsored by ArtWorks. Steve is a nature enthusiast. He enjoys birdwatching, walks in his woods, and nature and geologic photography. Steve has photographs on display at ArtWorks and has had two exhibits over the years. Steve authored the book The Natural History of Mecosta County and collects plant specimens for the U of M herbarium.
Barb and Steve have a special place in their hearts for ArtWorks in Big Rapids. They have each been on the board, served on multiple committees and Steve is still the go to repair man for building maintenance. The Rosses support other non-profits in their community, including local food pantries, the local homeless shelter, and Habitat for Humanity in Mecosta County. They also donate to various nature organizations and a nonprofit that funds scholarships in Africa helping young woman to complete secondary education.
They’ve been giving since the 70’s and enjoy several programs on radio and TV. Barb and Steve are sustaining members and have also supported special initiatives such as the student news internship program and our Report for America journalist focused on the environment.
Steve says, “We support WCMU and Public Media because we want honest, accurate and truthful reporting as well as the quality programming on Public Television.” Barb adds, “We support WCMU for the quality and variety of its programming, and also for its dedication to local news reporting and arts programming. Mid-Michigan would be a poorer place without WCMU, so we are happy to contribute!”

King Stories: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
January
16
King Stories is a one hour documentary of captivating stories told by close friends and associates of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Host Julian Bond, along with insiders—Ralph Abernathy, David Garrow, Dick Gregory, Mark Lane and Larry Williams—share rarely documented stories about the personal and private sides of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Notably one of the most significant Americans in the 20th Century, Dr. King is an iconic figure. But who was the man? King Stories offers snapshots into his personality and character. We begin with Dr. King’s precocious teenage years followed by close-ups of behind the scenes accounts of day-to-day life on the road marching and protesting for American black civil rights. We hear a moving account of Dr. King’s last conversation just minutes before he was struck down by a sniper’s bullet, and the disclosures of the investigation into his murder.
