Between Worlds: The Port of Caesarea Maritima and the Roman to Medieval Near East Online @ flintarts.org

AUGUST 25 6:00p

Caesarea Maritima, on the north coast of modern Israel, flourished as a provincial capital, commercial center, and hotbed of religious conflict from the time of King Herod the Great to the time of King Louis IX. In his lecture, Prof. Rife will explore the archaeology and history of this uniquely important urban community. The story of this one city encapsulates the broader historical evolution of the region, from the negotiation between regional sovereignty and Roman imperialism to the advent and growth of Christianity and the eventual prosperity of the Islamic caliphates.

The Sheppy Dog Fund Lecture has been established to address topics of art, religion, and history, and is funded annually by The Sheppy Dog Fund, Dr. Alan Klein, advisor.

Dr. Joseph L. Rife Guest Lecturer

1120 E. Kearsley St. Flint, MI 48503 810.234.1695 flintarts.org

Free and open to the public

Register at flintarts.org/events/ lectures to either view the lecture and participate in the live Q&A with the guest lecturer via Zoom or watch the lecture live via YouTube.

Discovery Block — An Hour of Special Programming Mondays at 8 p.m. on WCMU Public Radio

Established in 2008, the Munk Debates bring together acclaimed thinkers around the world to tackle the big questions of our time. Each episode in this three-part series follows a classic format employing opening statements, free form rebuttals, and closing statements. Moderator Rudyard Griffiths keeps an eye on the clock and ensures the debate flows smoothly and remains on point. August 2: The Munk Debates - Capitalism: Has capitalism lifted millions out of poverty, while being the only economic system that inspires innovation and creativity ensuring the greatest political freedom; or is the system so broken it now poses a threat not just to democracy but to the survival of the planet therefore requiring complete reform for a more humane system?

August 9: The Munk Debates – Religion: Is religion built on fear and loathing causing centuries of misery and oppression, or a powerful motivator in the faithful to carry out incredible acts of charity and good works to make the world a better place?

August 16: The Munk Debates - Progress: Did humanity reach a turning point in the 20th century with more people living longer healthier lives, eating, earning and learning more – especially women; or are we naïve to think we have escaped the inevitable crises that still threaten our survival as a species, barely responding to the greatest threat we have ever faced – global warming?

August 23: Amazon: The Prime Effect (Episode 2) Amazon: The Prime Effect, from On Point, is an in-depth series exploring the myriad ways Amazon is changing the ways we shop, work and live. In this episode, we focus on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — his ambitions, and how he built the company and its culture. August 30: Call to Mind - Spotlight on Virtual Mental Health Care We explore how mental health care’s urgent pivot to new technologies fared during the pandemic’s critical stress test. Through interviews with expert clinicians and researchers, we will explore the fast-developing landscape of virtual mental health care — its advancements, and its challenges.

American Routes is produced in New Orleans. Every week you’ll hear a broad range of American music — blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical. Now in its 20th year on the air, American Routes explores the shared musical and cultural threads in these American styles and genres of music — and how they are distinguished. Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Sanford Voices Project Presented by WCMU this Fall

During Spring of 2020, the village of Sanford, Michigan was directly impacted by catastrophic flooding caused by two mid Michigan dam failures. In partnership with CMU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, The Sanford Voices Project documents the personal histories of those affected by the disaster, and how they are recovering from it. When disaster struck this village, the community’s strength and resilience demonstrated that Sanford is Strong. Visit WCMU.org for details.
