About the Author

Lois Dalton taught French and English at both the university and high school levels over the course of her 30-year teaching career. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and L’Université de Franche Comté in Besançon, France. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in French literature and completed studies in the MS program in Foreign Language Education. One of her favorite things about teaching was creating stories with her students, and these experiences became the inspiration for writing. She is the author of the Fluency Matters Comprehension-based™ reader Un Royaume en danger. Now retired from classroom teaching, Lois enjoys traveling with her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Chapitre 1

Les Visiteurs

C’était un jour parfait dans le jardin. Il y avait des fleurs de toutes les couleurs et l’odeur des fleurs était magnifique. Claire et sa sœur Minette exploraient dans le jardin. Elles aimaient explorer dans le jardin. Elles aimaient examiner les pétales des fleurs multicolores ou chercher les insectes qui y habitaient. À ce moment-là, Claire imaginait un prince qui avait des fleurs pour elle.

— Claire, regarde ! a dit sa sœur Minette, nerveuse.

Claire a regardé dans la direction de la maison.

— Qu’est-ce qu’il y a ? a-t-elle demandé à Minette.

— Des visiteurs !

— Ah non ! Pas encore, s’est-elle exclamée.

Claire était une fille qui aimait beaucoup de choses. Mais il y avait une chose que Claire n’aimait pas : les

visiteurs. Et maintenant, il y avait des visiteurs chez elle. Elle n’était pas contente et elle s’est exclamée : — Cachons-nous !

Claire et Minette ne regardaient plus les couleurs vibrantes des fleurs et elles ne faisaient plus attention à l’odeur parfumée des fleurs. Elles se cachaient dans le jardin et elles regardaient leurs parents qui parlaient avec les visiteurs. Il y avait une famille : un père, une mère et deux garçons. Les garçons étaient des adolescents, comme Claire.

Les visiteurs parlaient avec ses parents. Claire a très bien compris la situation. Les visiteurs voulaient voir le spectacle. L’homme a donné un petit sac à son père. Claire s’imaginait que dans le sac il y avait de l’argent.

— Ah non ! s’est exclamée Claire.

— Qu’est-ce qu’il y a ? a demandé Minette.

Mais Claire n’a pas répondu à sa sœur. Elle continuait de regarder en silence. Elle a vu son père accepter le sac et sourire. Le visiteur a payé son père pour voir

« le Spectacle de Claire » ! Quelle humiliation !

Son père a souri et il a regardé sa mère. Sa mère a aussi souri, et puis elle a crié :

— Claire ! Claire ! Tu as des visiteurs !

Chapitre 2 La Surprise

— Claire ! Claire ! a répété sa mère. Tu as des visiteurs !

Claire n’a pas répondu. Elle ne voulait pas écouter sa mère. Elle ne voulait pas voir les visiteurs. Elle voulait se cacher des visiteurs ; elle voulait se cacher de ses parents ; elle voulait se cacher de tout le monde.

Claire, la voyante

— Claire ! a crié sa mère, encore une fois.

Mais Claire n’a pas répondu. Furieuse, sa mère a marché rapidement vers le jardin.

— Oh Claire… Maman est furieuse ! a dit sa sœur.

Leur mère marchait dans le jardin, et elle ne faisait pas attention aux fleurs. Elle a même marché sur des fleurs parce qu’elle était tellement furieuse. Elle a vu ses filles et elle a dit :

— Les filles ! Pourquoi est-ce que vous vous cachez ?

Les filles n’ont pas répondu.

— Claire ! Pourquoi est-ce que tu ne viens pas ? Il y a des visiteurs et ils veulent te parler ! Viens avec moi, maintenant !

— Oui, maman, a répondu Claire en regardant tristement Minette.

Claire ne voulait vraiment pas parler avec les visiteurs. Elle préférait se cacher dans la forêt dangereuse ! Elle

préférait être dans la forêt dangereuse qu’avec les visiteurs curieux. Claire n’aimait pas les visiteurs.

Quand Claire et sa mère sont arrivées devant les visiteurs, Claire ne les a pas regardés. Au lieu, elle regardait par terre. Les visiteurs regardaient Claire. Ils étaient confus.

— Il n’y a rien de spécial chez elle. J’ai payé pour ça ? a dit l’homme, irrité.

— Elle est normale. Elle est petite pour une fille de 13 ans, mais elle est complètement normale, a dit le père de Claire.

Claire n’a rien dit. Elle regardait toujours par terre et écoutait les commentaires des visiteurs.

Elle n’aimait pas quand les visiteurs parlaient d’elle. Normalement, quand les visiteurs arrivaient chez elle, ils ne lui parlaient jamais. Ils la traitaient comme un monstre.

Alors, Claire continuait à regarder par terre en silence. Après un moment, son père lui a dit :
