Integrating STEM Across Disciplines

InterKulturell® takes a contextualized, integrative approach by explicitly connecting language acquisition to other fields of study.

InterKulturell® provides activities that integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with German language acquisition. Taking inspiration from Germany’s achievements in STEM provides a deeper understanding of cultural products and practices.

InterKulturell® Intermediate takes differentiation a step further with a flexible, two-year curriculum and parallel activities for Intermediate Low to Intermediate High students.

Backward Design

InterKulturell® is backward designed which means each unit leads students to what they will need to know. Essential questions and unit performance goals were developed first, followed by a Standards-Based Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) for the unit. The IPA was designed by ACTFL to measure learners’ knowledge and skills in authentic “real-world” situations.

Assessment

Each unit consists of a series of activities that provide ongoing feedback on learners’ progress. These activities build learners’ content knowledge, and formative and summative assessments are performance-based to enable learners to demonstrate what they know and can do in the language.

So weit bin ich kommunikativ and So weit bin ich interkulturell are Can-Do statements embedded in the activities encouraging students to self-assess their level of performance: I can do this consistently, I can do this with help, or This is still a goal.

The Can-Do statements help learners monitor their progress and identify areas where they need additional support. These statements are compiled in their online Portfolio on Learning Site.®

Vocabulary

Vocabulary Instruction in Context

InterKulturell® introduces vocabulary in thematic chunks to fulfill communicative goals. All activities include listening, reading, and/or viewing comprehensible input that focuses on the target vocabulary in the thematic context. Following the input, a variety of interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks in communicative and cultural contexts enable learners to produce the vocabulary they have processed for meaning. Additional vocabulary practice and tasks in the context of each unit are in the Workbook.

InterKulturell® presents unit vocabulary in several manageable groupings:

» Wie sagt man das? is essential vocabulary for the thematic unit needed for success on the formative and summative assessments, and for use beyond the classroom.

» Nützliche Ausdrücke are useful expressions, transition words, and idioms for learners to use in communicative tasks.

» Vokabeln zusammengefasst is a compilation of unit vocabulary organized by topics at the end of each unit, before the summative assessment.

Grammar

Grammar Instruction in Context

InterKulturell® series aligns with the discovery approach to grammar instruction. Learners are provided with multiple opportunities to personalize the meaning of language in context through listening, viewing, and reading before they are asked to notice patterns or word order in the same familiar context.

Animated Videos

The animated videos provide reinforcement and additional instruction of the grammatical concepts. They are designed to be used outside the classroom to help the student to speak German more consistently in the classroom. The videos feature recurring characters who focus learners’ attention on noticing grammar patterns in a familiar context. Activities are available on Learning Site® to support the learner while watching the videos.
