A Note to the Reader

Approximately one-third of the world’s food supply and half of the world’s textiles depend on pollinators. Of all pollinators, honeybees are the world’s most important, with each individual honeybee capable of visiting up to 2000 flowers in a single day! Unfortunately, the honeybee population is decreasing steadily due to disease, deforestation, and agricultural practices. It is important to educate ourselves about the value of these tiny hardworking creatures so that we can preserve not only the bees, but our very way of life.

This comprehension-based reader relies on 88 unique high-frequency words in French. Written primarily in present tense, it contains a manageable amount of vocabulary and numerous cognates (words that are similar in two languages), making it an ideal first read for beginning language students.

All vocabulary is listed in the glossary. Language that would be considered beyond a Novice Low level is footnoted within the text, and the meaning given at the bottom of the page where the expression first occurs.

About the Author

Un Travail spécial

Dans une colonie d’abeilles, il y a des travaux différents. La reine est la chef1. Elle a un travail très important.

La majorité des abeilles sont ouvrières2 . Les ouvrières ont des travaux différents. Par exemple, il y a des abeilles éclaireuses3 et des gardiennes.

Le travail des éclaireuses est un travail intéressant. C’est un travail populaire. C’est fascinant ! Le travail est … d’être exploratrice ! Isabelle et Gabrielle sont des abeilles exploratrices. Elles ont la responsabilité de trouver du pollen et du nectar. Trouver du pollen et du nectar est un travail très important.

— Oui, Votre Majesté, répond Isabelle avec respect.

— Un travail spécial ! s’exclame Gabrielle.

— Il faut trouver un nouvel arbre. Nous allons former une nouvelle colonie. Il faut explorer les environs. Il faut trouver un nouvel arbre… l’arbre parfait. Il faut marquer l’arbre avec notre parfum. Grâce au parfum, mes abeilles vont trouver le nouvel arbre. Elles vont construire une nouvelle ruche5.

— Mais normalement, nous faisons des explorations pour trouver du nectar. Trouver un nouvel arbre est un travail important, répond Gabrielle.

— Oui, Votre Majesté, c’est beaucoup de responsabilité. Trouver l’arbre parfait est difficile, répond Isabelle, nerveuse.

L’arbre parfait a beaucoup de grandes branches pour notre protection. L’arbre parfait a beaucoup de fleurs à polliniser. Et aussi, il faut avoir de l’eau.

— Oui, Votre Majesté. Nous allons explorer les environs. Nous allons trouver l’arbre parfait pour notre colonie, répond Gabrielle.

— Au revoir ! s’exclame Isabelle.

— Au revoir, mes exploratrices !

Chapitre 2

L’Arbre hostile1

Normalement, Isabelle et Gabrielle explorent les environs pour trouver des fleurs. Récolter2 le pollen et le nectar des fleurs est un travail important, mais trouver l’arbre parfait est un travail SUPER important. Un arbre parfait est absolument nécessaire pour la nouvelle ruche ! La reine et la colonie dépendent du travail d’exploration des abeilles !

Isabelle et Gabrielle explorent le parc. Elles explorent et explorent. Il faut trouver l’arbre parfait pour la ruche. Les deux abeilles voient beaucoup d’arbres dans le parc. Trouver l’arbre parfait est très difficile. Les abeilles exploratrices travaillent beaucoup. Isabelle et Gabrielle ont besoin3 d’eau. Gabrielle voit de l’eau.

À ce moment-là, Gabrielle réalise qu’il y a un problème.

— Isabelle ! Partons !5 Il y a un ennemi !

Les deux abeilles intelligentes s’échappent6 rapidement. Elles échappent rapidement à leur ennemi. L’ennemi ne voit pas les deux abeilles.

Isabelle et Gabrielle continuent leur exploration. Elles veulent trouver l’arbre parfait.

Elles passent par le parc. Les deux abeilles voient un grand arbre. Il est énorme !

— C’est un oranger7 ! Est-ce l’arbre parfait ?

L’oranger est un grand arbre. L’oranger est un arbre avec beaucoup de grandes branches pour la protection de la ruche. L’oranger est un arbre avec des fleurs que les abeilles peuvent polliniser et il y a de l’eau dans les environs !

L’oranger est l’arbre parfait ! Il est parfait pour la colonie !

Les abeilles ouvrières ont besoin de parfum pour trouver l’arbre. Miam miam, du parfum !

L’énorme oranger voit le travail des abeilles. L’oranger voit des abeilles et il est très irrité.

— Du parfum ! Du parfum ? Je ne veux pas de parfum ! Le parfum des abeilles ? Beurk !8
