A GREAT IDEA…

Sometimes things look good on paper £ but lose their sparkle when seen in the cold light of day. The empty hotel swimming pool in a glossy travel brochure inviting you for a dip, compared to the crowded reality, or the much-hyped winter £ wonderland promising reindeer rides, compared to an emaciated donkey with strap-on antlers limping through slushy puddles. The more impressive the object of desire seems on paper, the greater the disappointment potential. The greater the expectation, the bigger the fall back down to reality.

As a magazine publisher, making things look good on paper is, quite literally, my job. Articles are edited for clarity and style, photos are (where appropriate) enhanced for visual satisfaction and adverts are set to create awareness of brands. The final package – printed, stapled and trimmed – is our own glistening pool, an invite to readers to take a dip in all that Wanstead has to offer. So yes, we do raise expectations and we do ramp up the disappointment potential. But in my experience, Wanstead rarely disappoints.

With the local cultural calendar filled with art trail, fringe and festival activities, it’s that time again when the community’s collective expectations are raised and Wanstead’s disappointment potential is at it’s highest. As we all anticipate the laughter, delight, taste, sounds, images and intrigue promised by the return of the aforementioned festivities, this publication has no hesitation in adding to those expectations.

After all, these pages only exist in the first place because Wanstead consistently delivers on its promises.

So, while my job may be to make things look good on paper, the real challenge is making these pages look as good as reality.

It was 30ºC on 6 August when local artists Katherine Poluck and Karen Humpage painted the third mural in the seasonal series at Wanstead Station.

Following on from the summer and autumn scenes, the theme of the latest creation is winter and features the chestnut tree that was cut down in December 1993 to make way for the M11 link road by George Green. “The scene shows a winter sunset and a lot of the winter plants that can be found in the community gardens on the site… We both thoroughly enjoyed painting the image and working together on the project,” said

Winter is coming: artists paint third in seasonal mural series at Wanstead Station

Katherine. The image was commissioned by the Wanstead Community Gardeners, and plans are being made for a fourth mural depicting spring. Katherine has also painted the blue downpipe near the planters under the summer mural with images of clematis and other climbers.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

History of English country estates

Wanstead Library will be taking part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning this month. “The first ever Macmillan coffee morning happened way back in 1990. Since then, the annual event has raised over £200m,” said a library spokesperson.

Nut-free cake and biscuit donations are welcome for the event, which takes place on 28 September from 11am to 12 noon.

The Wanstead Historical Society begins its new season of talks this month with a look at English country estates and the social activities of the families who lived in them. Classic car owners in the local area are once again invited to show off their vintage automobiles at this month’s Wanstead Festival (free; booking required). “The annual community event has often featured a display of classic cars and we are keen to encourage more residents in the borough who own such vehicles to take part,” said Kirstie Leonard, a Vision RCL events officer. Art Trail Wanstead and Wanstead Fringe bring culture and comedy

In an online interview with the Wanstead Village Directory ahead of the opening of Wanstead’s M&S foodhall last month, store manager Claire Benson expressed an interest in being part of the local community, keen to learn more about the Wanstead Community Gardeners and the art trail. The store – located next to The George pub – will be fundraising for Macmillan this month, with Claire already having personally raised £780 for the cancer charity through a garden party she hosts with her mum every year. Wanstead-based peace campaigner Sarah Hipperson dies at 90

Frank is back: Sinatra tribute night at Wanstead church this month

Tributes have been paid to local peace campaigner Sarah Hipperson, who has died aged 90. A native of Glasgow, Sarah became a midwife before emigrating to Canada, where she married and had five children. Sarah returned to England in the 1970s, settling in Wanstead. “It was her decision in 1983 to up sticks and move to join the peace protest at Greenham Common that brought her to prominence,” recalls Councillor Paul Donovan, who describes Sarah as a ‘great person, who did much to make the world a better place’.

A Frank Sinatra tribute act will be performing in the parish hall of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wanstead this month. “Come along to listen and dance to the smooth voice of ‘Frank Sinatra’. We’ve had ‘Frank’ come back three or four times as he’s really popular and a great singer,” said a church spokesperson.

The performance will begin at 7.30pm on 22 September (tickets: £10; booking required).

Public consultation underway after swimming pool designs revealed

Large turnout for women’s softball cricket festival in Wanstead

The planning application for Wanstead’s swimming pool was submitted at the end of August and a 12-week public consultation on the plans is now underway. It follows a drop-in session held at Wanstead Library, during which residents were able to view the designs for the new leisure facilities and improvements at Wanstead High School.

“Residents commented that the designs were impressive and how good it will be to have a local pool,” said Wanstead Park councillor Sheila Bain. Visit wavidi.co/pool

An evening of women’s softball cricket held at Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club last month has been deemed a success by organisers. “We had over 50 women attend in seven teams of players, ranging from mothers and daughters to beginners and people who had never tried it before… Everyone enjoyed the evening and realised that cricket is for everyone no matter what your age or ability,” said Saba Nasim. The event was part of a nationwide festival run by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Ornamental Water minus the water: park lakes suffer in heatwave

The recent heatwave has left the largest lake in Wanstead Park, the Ornamental Water, almost empty. “In these conditions, the amount of water that the City of London is licensed to pump from its borehole has been inadequate to keep the lakes full to their designed levels,” explained Richard Arnopp of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands. Since May 2017, 288,000 litres of water a day has been pumped from the chalk aquifer 88 metres beneath London to try to maintain the water levels in the park’s 300-year-old lake system.

A local social enterprise is aiming to build inter-generational relationships and promote the importance of civic pride in communities through collectively curated murals. “Unity Walls will bring help to maintain an elevated sense of community spirit as the regeneration continues throughout a number of boroughs across London,” said a spokesperson. As well as live demonstrations at the Wanstead Festival, there are also plans for murals at Snaresbrook and Seven Kings stations next year. A house in Aldersbrook will open its doors to the public on 22 September as part of the Open House London initiative. “The original Edwardian part sits in stark contrast with the contemporary volume at the back,” said Martin Gruenanger of Space Group Architects, who worked on the property last year. “There are the historical, slightly romantic rooms in the old house counterbalanced by the contemporary, minimal but warm box at the back.” Tours of 43 Park Road will take place between 10am and 4.30pm. More than 30 volunteers and Epping Forest keepers took part in a community litter pick last month, collecting 53 bags of rubbish from Wanstead Flats and the Green Man Roundabout area. “Both places were affected by major grass fires in late July, so this was an opportunity to clear bottles, cans and plastic from places not usually accessible,” said Tim Harris. “An added bonus for the Flats pickers was the sighting of three wheatears, migrant birds stopping over for a feed before heading to North Africa.”

Help needed to establish local support group for bereaved parents

Local speakers’ club invites you to get on your soapbox this month

Stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands – which is working with Haven House Children’s Hospice – are seeking local volunteers to help establish a new support group in the Wanstead and Woodford area. “We need people prepared to become part of a committee as well as befrienders,” said area coordinator Rose Abrehart. Befrienders are usually bereaved parents or family members and provide support to anyone affected by the death of a baby over the phone and in person at group meetings. Call 07707 480 020

hopping and coffee breaks in Wanstead High Street are going to get a lot more interesting from 8 September.

Businesses and community centres will be showing a wide display of visual art for the ninth Art Trail Wanstead. And the displays will include postcard art sent in by local residents and artists – including the emoji artwork on these pages.

More than 50 local venues are taking part in this year’s 16-day, free community event.

Tackle the trail in whatever way you like: choose to go art-spotting in short bursts, or perhaps take on the whole route as a day out with friends or family. (Some venues have restricted opening times, so check first on the website).

These pages focus on important trail events. However, spotting fascinating artwork to display in your own home could be your highlight of the trail. So, don’t miss the larger shows.

Fabulous photography will be exhibited at our two Tube stations, while Wanstead Station also features a cool new mural. (Remember, murals can be commissioned.) Majestic Wine Warehouse will show life-class nudes plus other art, while its car park has been used for graffiti and mural work. Don’t miss another colourful mural next door, by Filika restaurant. Enjoy the range of work at Age UK’s Allan Burgess Centre, then view the curated art display at The Manor House. At Wanstead Library, see a selection of postcard art, mosaics, mixed media, jewellery and children’s work. Wanstead House Community Association will show its members’ paintings, photography and calligraphy. And in Aldersbrook, take in the trail displays at St Gabriel’s Church.

There will be a big push for next year’s 10th anniversary trail. You may even want to take part.

CHRIST CHURCH FESTIVAL

Artists Janet McKay and Martin Jones, who already have stunning work installed at the church, will reveal their new portrait using augmented reality.

This work will complement the flower festival theme ‘celebrating women’. Then, meditate through Brenda Coyle’s art with accompanying music from young Wanstead composer Rory Aitken. Plus, refreshments and stalls.

Wanstead on show In the third of a series of articles looking at the annual phenomenon that is the Wanstead Fringe, Jon Fentiman, organiser of Wanstead’s regular comedy nights, introduces an ambitious Fringe line-up

I

started Wanstead Comedy Night nearly 10 years ago at Russell’s Wine Bar (now Otto restaurant). I’d spent the previous six months looking for a good headliner to kick things off.

One night in Mile End, I saw a brilliant act.

He wasn’t even headlining, he was third on the bill; a curly-haired bloke, just turned 40, talking about his nights out and intimate encounters in the 80s. I found out his name, called his agent, but he wanted £250. My budget just wouldn’t stretch that far. He recommended another of his comedians, Milo McCabe, who fitted the bill perfectly and the night was a great success. We filled Russell’s to capacity and Milo brought the house down with his hilarious character act. It was a fantastic feeling watching people enjoying themselves and leaving so happy.

Ten years later, The Manor House hosts our regular monthly night, with bigger charity fundraising nights held at Wanstead Golf Club.

We’ve attracted many top names, including those who’ve broken into TV work, like Henning Wehn and Sara Pascoe. This year’s Britain’s Got Talent runner-up, Robert White, has been one of our many supporting acts, as has Dane Baptiste, who recently appeared on Live at the Apollo and is now a regular on TV comedy panel shows.

TV exposure certainly brings comedians to a wider audience and the possibility of fame, but some of the best club comedians are rarely on TV. Every year, Milo McCabe’s one-man show at The Edinburgh Fringe is a complete sell-out and receives rave reviews.

In fact, all the acts appearing on 12 September at Wanstead Cricket Club have headlined big comedy clubs and will provide a great night of entertainment.

The Wanstead Fringe is now an established annual event and its ambitions are snowballing year on year. Last year, we organised just one comedy night, headlined by the fantastic Paul Sinha, but all 150 tickets sold out fast, leaving many people disappointed to miss the Fringe’s only comedy event. So, this year, with raised expectations, we’re organising more events at more venues, including an opera at Wanstead Golf Club.

Yes, an opera! I know it’s not stand-up, but I recently saw a production of La Boheme by OperaUpClose, and was blown away by how entertaining it was. I thought it would be a great addition to the Wanstead Fringe and I’m overjoyed the Olivier Award-winning company has agreed to perform Opera Cocktail, a mixture of some of opera’s bestknown arias, duets and ensembles, woven together through a humorous storyline.

Oh… and that comedian, with the curly hair talking about the 80s? It was only Micky Flanagan! Enjoy Wanstead Fringe 2018.

BACK IN THE GAME Soccer legend Frank Lampard Sr is the new landlord of a much-loved Wanstead pub, which many residents were beginning to fear had closed for good. Millicent Brown speaks to the former West Ham star

T

he Nightingale pub – which has been a landmark of the Wanstead community for hundreds of years – served its last drinks under the previous landlord back in September 2017, when he announced he was shutting it down, citing ill health.

However, former West Ham and England football star Frank Lampard Sr, whose football career spanned more than 20 years, suddenly stepped in to buy and fully renovate the venue, renaming the pub Nightingale on the Green. And in doing so, he has managed to keep its old traditional pub character, which was always so popular.

Nightingale on the Green enjoyed a spectacular opening night on 17 July, when regulars returned in their masses to enjoy its updated décor, indulge in the new meals and meet up with their friends once again.

Household name Frank – who was born in nearby East Ham and is the father of football’s Frank Lampard Jr, who has just taken over managing Derby County – was signed on as a West Ham youth player in 1964 before joining their adult team three years later.

He then remained with West Ham until 1985 before a short spell at Southend, and played for England from 1971 to 1980. He wore the number 3 on his shirt. After finishing playing, he assisted his brother-in-law Harry Redknapp in management at West Ham. But luckily for the many Wanstead residents who had feared The Nightingale’s closure last September would be the last time it would ever open its doors, he has now stepped into the pub game.

Tucked away in the backstreets of Wanstead, the iconic venue on Nightingale Lane had

always been a popular local fixture, well known for its cosy and friendly atmosphere, where people could while away hours with their friends whatever the weather. And the fact that it boasts tables and benches overlooking Nightingale Green has been a great advantage during this summer’s amazing heatwave.

Frank told me: “I am simply thrilled to have the chance to open Nightingale on the Green, which is enabling me to become such an integral part of the local community. This really is like coming home for me. I have spent most of my life in east London and have always loved coming to Wanstead whenever I had the opportunity. When I heard the old Nightingale was up for grabs, I knew it was an opportunity I simply could not miss. I am currently loving being here, getting to know all my regulars and my staff and we will do all we can to make Nightingale on the Green a place where people can really enjoy their time out.”

Whodunnit? (You) Crime novelist Isabelle Grey will be hosting a writing workshop at Wanstead Library this month, explaining how to commit the perfect (fictional) crime and create page-turning prose

I

’ve been killing people for years.

First on television, in series such as Wycliffe, Midsomer Murders and Jimmy McGovern’s Accused, and now in the pages of a series of crime novels.

I grew up with a father who regularly took a knife to people. He also liked to take his young kids into the Manchester hospital where he worked as a surgeon to show us around the operating theatre and explain all the instruments and equipment. At home, his idea of amusing us on a wet afternoon was to catch a frog in the garden and teach us how to dissect it – a somewhat scary playtime for a child. But I grew up vividly aware that life and death, blood and guts, pain and fear were all a daily reality.

I also constantly saw how patient ‘histories’ could become urgent mysteries to be solved.

Just like police and forensic evidence, medical symptoms, test results and diagnoses built a story in which lives were at stake.

For Grace Fisher, a detective inspector with the Major Investigation Team in Colchester, Essex, and the heroine of my four crime novels, the stories she’s told by both witnesses and perpetrators are just as important as DNA results or a painstaking examination of forensic detail. And she cares deeply about the outcome, about winning justice for the victims of crime.

I’m delighted to be running ‘Means, Motive and Opportunity’, a three-hour crimewriting workshop at Wanstead Library this month. And, although I won’t be asking the participants to dissect any frogs, I will be exploring how to create stories rich in twists and suspense as well as memorable characters and satisfying endings.

Writing screenplays showed me how to structure a story to create a sense of pace and to use hooks and unexpected reveals – all part of the pleasure for readers of crime fiction who want to get one step ahead of the investigation, yet don’t want the solution to come too easily.

And my early career as a freelance journalist taught me how people – real then and fictional now – can constantly surprise me. Nostalgia for my brief experience of Fleet Street, before the newspapers moved elsewhere, also provided the other regular character in my books, the loyal but disreputable tabloid crime reporter Ivo Sweatman.

Crime fiction can be serious, dark and thrilling – and also enjoyable – to read and to write. So, do come along to the workshop and find out how to get started.

ost of us have seen, or heard, about the BBC’s series Blue Planet.

This groundbreaking programme highlighted the link between the plastics we throw away, which then enter the oceans, and the damage they do to our wildlife.

We have our own blue planet on our doorstep.

Eagle Pond, off Snaresbrook Road, like all wet habitats in Wanstead, has suffered this summer as a result of the long dry spell, low oxygen levels and litter.

Just like the turtles and whales in the oceans, the local wildlife suffers just as much with the plastics and litter that enter the ponds here, or in Wanstead Park.

That’s why the Wanstead Society and the South Woodford Society are working with local people, the council and the City of London to highlight this issue and promote a three-step approach to removing this waste.

1. Get the public to take their litter home.

Unless we all take responsibility for where we live, we can never cure the root cause of this problem. Just take your litter home with you and recycle it if you can. Most responsible people do just that. But we hope that by raising awareness of what discarded plastic does to our local wildlife, those that don’t can understand what happens. Some plastics never biodegrade, and if they get digested by fish, swans and other birds, they cause them pain and can

September 2018 ultimately kill them. By taking litter home, we not only make where we live a better place, but help local wildlife thrive as well.

2. Action days to clean up the ponds Eagle Pond is owned by the City of London and is their responsibility to maintain. The Wanstead Society and the South Woodford Society have offered to work with local people and the council to help clean the site and our first action day took place on 1 September. Although this will help in the short term, it’s only a small sticking plaster unless we can cure the root problem.

3. Improved cleansing and bin facilities along Snaresbrook Road We are working with Redbridge Council

to ensure the surrounding areas are clean.

With the help of Councillor Blackman of Wanstead Village ward, we aim to ensure the surrounding roads have sufficient bin provision. The council can do little to the pond, but we can ensure the surrounding areas are kept litter-free to prevent litter blowing into the water, which they have promised to do.

We are lucky to have so much green space and wetland wildlife in Wanstead and South Woodford, but we all need to take steps to ensure it thrives and has a plastic-free life. We can’t directly ensure the Pacific or Atlantic are 100% waste-free, but together we can make a real difference to our local wildlife, which is just as important.

Last will and testament?

Local inheritance specialist Derek Lindsey of the Moneta Partnership looks at two recent cases involving will disputes to highlight the importance of not only having a will but keeping it up to date

I

n England, everyone has complete freedom to dispose of their assets on death to whoever they wish by using a will. Without a will (known as dying intestate) a person’s estate will pass to close family according to a strict order of priority as laid down by law.

However, the Inheritance (Provision for Families and Dependants) Act 1975 recognises that certain categories of people, such as spouses, civil partners, children and people being maintained by the deceased, should have ‘reasonable financial provision’ made for them. In effect, for spouses, the test of reasonable provision is similar to a divorce, and in other cases it is maintenance.

Two recent cases are of particular interest.

The first is lott v Mitson, which took 10 years to work its way through the courts until the Supreme Court gave a decision last year. In this case, a mother left all of her estate of about £500,000 to various animal charities (although there was little indication she had supported them in her lifetime) and cut her estranged daughter (of about 30 years) out of her will. The mother and her solicitor had made proper notes of her reasons. The daughter, who was on benefits, challenged the will under the 1975 Act and the original judge awarded her £50,000. This was not enough for the daughter and she appealed.

The Court of Appeal then upped the award to about a third of the estate and so the charities appealed this decision. The Supreme Court disagreed with the Court of Appeal’s ruling and went back to the original judge’s award of £50,000. How much this all cost in legal fees and who paid is not known!

In a second case reported recently (Ubbhi v Ubbhi), a husband, who was

divorcing his wife, died suddenly. The husband’s will, which was made some time before his death, left everything (about £4.5m) to his wife. As he was still married to his wife at his death, his will was still valid (if he had been divorced with a decree absolute it would not have been). However, the husband had a second family with two minor children (born after he had made his will). The children’s mother made a claim on behalf of her children under the 1975 Act, including provision for private schooling. The court ignored the claim for private education but did award about £1.4m for the children’s maintenance.

The moral of these cases is to make a will and keep it up to date, and take specialist advice when drawing up a will, especially if complicated relationships are involved. Every case is different and, if the 1975 Act is invoked, the courts will judge each case on its merits.

Counselling and psychotherapy training institute TA East launches in Wanstead this month. Here, founder Victoria Baskerville offers some insight into the theory of transactional analysis

A East has grown out of a counselling, psychotherapy, supervision and consultancy practice established in Wanstead and east London for over 20 years. We aim to offer in-depth training in transactional analysis, leading to recognised qualifications and registration in counselling or psychotherapy.

Transactional analysis was founded by Eric Berne in the 1950s. Berne’s vision was to make psychotherapy accessible to the lay person.

To move away from the doctor-patient relationship and enable the client to have insight into their own processes, thus offering an open and equal relationship. Since then, transactional analysis has developed vastly, integrating humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural models.

In the last two decades, relational transactional analysts have re-embraced Berne’s original psychoanalytical roots, by considering the transferential phenomena in relational dynamics, while holding the humanistic philosophy as central to the practise, offering the ‘I’m OK, you’re OK’ relationship.

Transactional analysis offers a comprehensive theory of personality, using ego states to understand intrapsychic processes and a theory of communication, through analysis of transactions, between us, both consciously and unconsciously.

Transactional analysis theory states that, by the age of six, we have unconsciously written our life script and decided our destiny, based on what we believe about ourselves, others and the world. We are significantly influenced by family and cultural scripting. Our script is an unconscious life plan, made in childhood,

which repeats and reinforces thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Once aware, we have the capacity to change our life script.

Our training institute offers a two-day workshop in the basic concepts and theory of transactional analysis. It is a prerequisite to undertaking the three- or four-year training course leading to registration as a therapeutic counsellor or psychotherapist, and may also be used as self development or continuing professional development for the fields of education, coaching and consultancy. The course introduces a breadth of transactional analysis theoretical concepts, bringing them alive through examples and experiential exercises. Participants will receive an internationally recognised certificate, awarded by the European Association of Transactional Analysis. Training is facilitated by experienced psychotherapists and educationalists who are UKCP registered. Integral to the training is an awareness of difference and cultural diversity, bringing counselling and psychotherapy into social and political contexts.

Road to nowhere Local resident Alison Wells makes a request to the drivers of Wanstead, and if we all take note, it will make the air we breathe both inside and outside our cars a little bit cleaner

I

n recent weeks, in and around Wanstead, I have noticed a lot of people sitting in parked cars with the engines running.

This seemed to me to be causing a lot of air pollution and so I decided to do some research and take action.

Heart in mouth, I now go up to these people and ask them, very nicely, to consider turning off their engines, explaining I am concerned about air pollution affecting us all, but in particular, children and older people. So far, I’ve asked 12 people to switch off their engines and everyone has agreed to do so, and I haven’t encountered any aggression, so thank you to you all for being so nice about it!

It is known as idling, and here are some facts and figures I hope will persuade everyone that this is a bad practice.

One of the biggest idling myths is that it’s more efficient to leave a car engine running for a few minutes than to shut it off and turn it back on again. The truth is that with modern (post mid-1980s) fuel-injection technology, starting a car requires almost no fuel.

Leaving an engine idling is also an offence under section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

The act enforces rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states: “You must not leave a vehicle’s engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.” You are liable for a £20 fine if you don’t turn off your engine when requested.

An idling engine can produce up to twice the emissions of a car in motion. These include chemicals such as sulphur dioxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide, to name a few. All of these contribute to asthma, heart disease and even lung cancer. In particular, children

are at risk of dangerous levels of air pollution from cars because exposure to toxic air is often far higher inside than outside vehicles.

Yes, inside the cars, not outside. So, if you are idling and your children are in the back seat, they are breathing more polluted air than if they were walking outside, according to government advisers. The Royal College of Physicians estimates 40,000 deaths a year in the UK are linked to air pollution, with engine idling contributing to this.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has made recommendations for improving road-traffic-related air pollution.

As part of this, NICE is encouraging authorities to raise awareness and crack down on idling, which may lead to ‘No Idling Zones’, where authorised individuals such as traffic enforcement officers monitor vehicles around schools or busy shopping areas.

According to the RAC, research shows 23% of all car journeys are two miles or under, so consider whether you really need to drive at all. If you do use your car, then please switch off your engine when you’re waiting.

here to begin? Back in high school around 1983 to 1984, listening to early hip hop on pirate radio stations, watching my friends trying to breakdance. I wasn’t any good at breaking but I saw the documentary film Style Wars on TV and thought I can’t dance but I know I can draw. I was intrigued by the letters and the way artists connected the colours. I started to doodle bubble letters on my school books, even drawing graffiti on the classroom blackboard with a classmate before the teacher came in.

From this start, I realised I could

draw different styles: straight letters, bubble letters and wild-style letters. Letters with arrows and adjoining pieces added to confuse yet give beauty to the words. I fell in love with letter styles. I wanted to be a signwriter, hand painting the lettering on signs and vehicles.

My parents supported me on this adventure, coming home from car boot sales with boxes of car paints for me to use. I painted pieces on my bedroom walls, tagging bus stops in the area on the way to other places, painting graffiti at West Ham housing estate, in the park, on the walls facing train tracks and seeing fresh new pieces from other graffiti writers, the likes of Keen, AWE, State of Art and The Chrome Angels. One strong memory is being given permission to paint a piece for the local youth centre in Leytonstone. This was a new beginning, the start of a new bright style of art, and I was hooked.

Local graffiti artist Robert Fuidge (aka 2Cane) – who recently painted this fishing-inspired mural outside High Street restaurant Filika – will be further demonstrating his talents at the Wanstead Festival this month

I stopped painting walls when I started a family in the early 1990s, but I still loved to draw. Even as a signwriter, I would design car logos in a graffiti style, giving them individuality and designing boy racer zebra stripes.

Time passed, and although I still drew graffiti on paper, I had stopped painting. I moved into a new home and couldn’t find a picture or poster to hang on my living room wall. I had an urge to paint something I wanted to see, and from there, I started to regain my love for graffiti. Like a kid in a candy shop, I started to visit the areas where graffiti was being painted, talking to other graffiti writers of all ages and from many other countries. Seeing their love of the art had given me back my enthusiasm to paint.

This time I had a focus. I wanted the public to see the true beauty in what we were doing,

taking decaying hoardings and giving them a fresh lease of life, bringing colour to dark places and putting smiles on people’s faces when they see the transformation.

Graffiti has come a long way from caveman scratchings on walls and Egyptian hieroglyphics, to shop signs painted high on building walls and modern-day advertisements.

Graffiti is here to stay.

Handling the heat Local solicitors Wiseman Lee have received an unprecedented number of questions in recent months about whether an employee can go home if it gets too hot at work. Pranav Bhanot reports

T

he United Kingdom basked in scorching 30ºC plus heat in July and August. And while health and safety laws do not specify maximum and minimum workplace temperatures, The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulation 1992 states employers must maintain a “reasonable” temperature in the workplace. Unfortunately, there is no legal definition as to the meaning of “reasonable”. However, what constitutes “reasonable” will depend on the tasks an employee needs to carry out. The more active the task, the cooler the temperature ought to be.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) code of practice suggests a minimum of 16ºC (or 13ºC if the work is particularly physical) but provides no maximum temperature. In the absence of a suggested maximum, it has been widely agreed that for most types of work, the acceptable maximum temperature lies between 16ºC and 24ºC. Having no official maximum working temperature may have been acceptable previously; however, with heatwaves on the rise, employers are facing an increasing number of complaints from staff about workplace temperatures.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is now campaigning for a maximum legal temperature for indoor workplaces of 30ºC (27ºC where work requires considerable physical activity), as well as an obligation on employers to take action to cool down the workplace when temperatures reach 24ºC. Whilst it is uncertain whether a legal maximum temperature will be introduced, the HSE’s guidance advises employers to focus

on their workers’ “thermal comfort” (their perception of temperature and the effect that it has on them) when regulating workplace temperature. After all, the HSE believes “thermal discomfort” among employees can result in more mistakes being made in the workplace.

In hot weather, employers should consider steps to achieve a more comfortable environment, such as relaxing dress codes, installing window shades and air conditioning fans or increasing ventilation.

For employees who commute to work by train, temperatures exceeding 27ºC can cause steel railway tracks to swell and buckle, resulting in delays. If an employee fails to attend work for a reason outside of their control, such as heat-related travel disruption, they may not be legally entitled to pay. However, employers should be cautious about deducting employees’ pay for this reason alone, as it could detrimentally impact employee morale and productivity and result in negative publicity for the employer.

SOCIAL SINGING Ahead of the launch of a new community youth choir in Wanstead this month, singing teacher Victoria Scott explains the benefits of exercising your vocal chords

S

inging is one of the most natural things in the world for humans. And we can all do it, even if you think you can’t! My name is Victoria and I am heading up an exciting, new, young people’s community choir project in Wanstead called Wanstead Youth Voices.

Our age range is eight to 18 and there are no auditions. We will be singing a wide range of really fun music from pop songs, folk songs and musical theatre to classical music, and each session will last one hour.

A bit about me. I have been a singing teacher and professional performer for most of my life, and can honestly say that getting involved in a choir has many health benefits, as well as being fun.

I studied at the Royal Academy of Music and gained a huge amount of knowledge and experience in many different styles of music, including opera.

I have worked as a professional singer all over the world and have taught singing and conducted choirs for nearly 20 years in the Redbridge area. I am also the ambassador for the London Youth Choir. I believe we can all learn to sing and that no one should be excluded.

There have been many studies made about the huge health and welfare benefits music can contribute to our lives. Singing improves blood circulation throughout the body, allowing more oxygen to reach the brain. This improves concentration and memory.

I have a sign on my teaching room wall saying “If you don’t think singing is a sport, then

you haven’t had a proper singing warm-up!”

Singing is a full physical workout, and as you learn to breathe deeply and properly, you improve your posture and use a greater amount of oxygen than when doing many other types of exercise. This in turn can help with better quality sleep.

Singing is also known to release endorphins that make you feel uplifted and happy, which can help lower stress levels.

Joining a choir of like-minded, fun-loving people also widens your social circle and boosts confidence as you can discover your talent in a safe environment.

So, do come and join us and see what wonderful things you can achieve being part of our new youth community choir.

The Bungalow Café was established in 1938 by Mr and Mrs Godley. Mr Godley was a volunteer firefighter during the Blitz, and this café was used to feed local firefighters, police and the armed forces. We still have a very strong following with the local police to this day.

Lies, damned lies & headlines In the second of two articles exploring the world of fake news, Wanstead resident Steve Wilks offers some guidance on how to identify false stories

F

ake news can have serious global implications. On 8 December 2016, Alex Younger, the chief of MI6, delivered a speech to journalists at the MI6 headquarters calling fake news and propaganda damaging to democracy. Younger said the mission of MI6 was to combat propaganda and fake news to deliver to his government a strategic advantage in the information warfare arena, and assist other nations, including Europe. He called such methods of fake news propaganda online a “fundamental threat to our sovereignty”.

Younger said all nations that hold democratic values should feel the same worry over fake news.

It is so serious that independent fact-checking charity Full Fact has devised a number of tests to identify false news to limit its reach.

Be sceptical of headlines False news stories often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation marks. If shocking claims in the headline sound unbelievable, they probably are.

Look closely at the URL A phoney or lookalike URL may be a warning sign of false news. Many false news sites mimic authentic news sources by making small changes to the URL. Go to the site and compare the URL to established sources.

Investigate the source Ensure the story is written by a source you trust with a reputation for accuracy. If the story comes from an unfamiliar organisation, check their ‘about us’ section to learn more.

Watch for unusual formatting Many false news sites have misspellings or

awkward layouts. Read carefully if you see these signs.

Consider the photo False news stories often contain manipulated images or videos. Sometimes, the photo may be authentic but taken out of context. Search for the image elsewhere to verify it.

Inspect the dates False news stories may contain timelines that make no sense, or event dates that have been altered.

Check the author’s sources Lack of evidence or reliance on unnamed experts may indicate a false news story. Also, look at other reports; if no other news source is reporting the same story, it may indicate the story is false.

The growth of social media and news sites has meant the quality of information has been sacrificed for quantity. Follow the above steps to make sense of news and keep your sanity.

y 1929, the club council was concerned about poor attendance at both their winter meetings and their summer outings. It decided to reduce the winter meetings to two per month, one to be held at the Woodford Memorial Hall and the other at a member’s home. Membership at that time was about 60, but average attendance was only nine.

From 1931 to the outbreak of the Second World War, membership continued to decline. This was despite the fact the population of the area was increasing. There had been steady development up to the 1920s followed by a lull, but with housing projects such as the Monkhams Estate and the Nightingale Estate in the 1930s, the population again increased.

During this time, many of the big old houses in Woodford, were lost and Woodford changed from being an agricultural area into a dormitory suburb. The census for 1931 shows the population of Woodford as 23,946. This includes parts of the area now known as South Woodford. Wanstead at that time had a population of 19,183. By 1933, the population of Woodford had increased to 26,840, but Wanstead had barely changed at 19,710.

In 1934, the Woodford Urban District was amalgamated with Wanstead to form the Wanstead & Woodford Urban District; in 1937, the new authority was elevated to the status of a municipal borough.

A small hardcore of active members continued to function and hold annual exhibitions, but at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, the society discontinued its activities.

In the summer of 1945, following the cessation of hostilities, Henry Malby, grandson of a founding member (also called Henry Malby), met George Hall and some other old members to discuss the revival of Woodford Photographic Society activities.

Bernard Cook offered the use of Fellowship House for a meeting and an announcement was published in the local press. Then

Councillor Cormacy, another member of the club, asked the society to reform at the community centre in Wanstead House, but after a heated debate, it was decided by vote that the Woodford Photographic Society would keep its independence.

Fortnightly meetings were arranged, to be held at Brooklands Preparatory School, Churchfields, while annual exhibitions were to be held at the Congregational church on George Lane.

FG Newmarch resumed office as president.

He was the natural choice because of his prominence and his long association with the society, having served as president before the war. George Hall was elected chairman, Henry Malby became secretary and William (Billy) Cook became treasurer. Before the war,

Regular reports of the first meetings appeared in the Woodford Times and these show the activities were based on the tradition established before the war, with senior members giving lectures and demonstrations.

Eventually, the association with the youth centre was severed as the youngsters were not interested in photography. The club applied for a direct letting and was granted favourable terms because of the status of the society as a cultural and educational body.

In 1952, the venue was moved to St Barnabas School in association with the youth centre there. The committee arranged a programme of 42 meetings, held during term time. A

It's all greek tO Him Independent local travel advisor Jack Leaf presents a guide to Athens, which he believes has experienced a ‘delightful transformation’ since his first visit and has plenty to offer holidaymakers

T

he terrible forest fire in July that devastated the coastal resort of Mati in Greece focused my mind on a wonderful and much-overlooked tourist destination: Athens. The impression of Greece’s capital city to many who have not been is one of congestion and pollution, best seen from the transfer vehicle on the way from the airport to Pireus Port.

I visited Athens for the first time about 25 years ago, in transit for 36 hours en route to stay with friends in Istanbul. In December 2017, I was delighted to be invited as a delegate to the Greece Tourism Expo – and what an amazing transformation the city has undergone, which started in time to host the Olympic Games in 2004 and has continued ever since. Furthermore, with age and experience, I have learned how to delve beneath the surface of a city to discover its hidden gems, rather than run around in a frenzied state to tick off the top 10 sights!

I stayed at the Grecotel Pallas Athena, a privately owned boutique hotel in a superb location downtown, where the emphasis is on the owner’s extensive collection of artwork and their interest in organic food, as was evident in the extensive breakfast offering.

Where London is full of expensive, pretentious restaurants and one is hard-pushed to locate somewhere still serving a quick snack or a cheap, good English meal, Athens has retained its old charm for those who don’t want a fancy scene, so dining at Bairaktaris in Monastiraki was a special treat.

As well as city sightseeing – be that the Parthenon crowning the Acropolis representing Ancient Greece or the Greek’s unusual version of the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside the presidential

mansion – be sure to enjoy another full-day experience: sailing to the Saronic Islands of Hydra, Poros and Aegina. Stroll along Hydra’s narrow, cobbled streets on this car-free island, buy a treat in an almond sweet shop, visit the monastery or simply savour the views of this 500-year-old harbour town. Next stop Poros, a much greener island with a quaint town flanked by citrus trees and windmills.

Renowned for its naval history, visit the naval museum or explore the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, or just stroll around the shops near the clock tower. The island of Aegina is a much bigger island – they like to think they rival Athens – where, in addition to shipbuilding and fishing, there is still much farming, so be sure to buy some olives and pistachio nuts before the return sailing to Athens.

I wish I had more space to talk you through the food and wine (old) city tour, but be sure to do it, and sample wine, ouzo, meats and cheeses while your guide takes you off the tourist drag to appreciate the older buildings and panoramic viewpoints.

Baking temperatures and heatwaves like this summer’s will soon be the new normal. So says a government report published in July, which calls for a range of urgent measures to improve how the UK copes with our changing climate. They estimate that hotter summers than this one could occur every other year by the 2040s.

Here in London, we face a particular problem because of something called the ‘urban heat island effect’. This happens when cooling surfaces, like vegetation and water, are replaced by hard materials, such as bricks and paving, which get very hot in the sun and then act like storage radiators, releasing heat during the night. Heat from people, cars and air conditioning amplifies the effect.

According to the London Assembly, by the middle of the century, an average summer’s day will be 3°C warmer. Heatwaves will become hotter and more frequent. Winters will be milder but wetter, with very heavy rainfall periods becoming more common.

Increasing the amount of vegetation in London is one of the mayor’s key strategies for helping the city prepare for these hotter summers and more extreme downpours.

Studies from around the world have confirmed the positive influence of vegetation upon thermal comfort in urban areas. At an individual level, we can adopt the same kind of approach for ensuring our own homes stay cooler during hot periods (and even warmer in winter).

Plant a tree to chill the air Ever noticed that the shade under a tree is particularly cool? That’s because trees literally suck heat out of the air during the process of evapotranspiration, as well as preventing solar radiation reaching the ground and adding moisture to hot, dry air. There are many trees which are perfect for smaller gardens and you can even plant one in a container to shade your patio or driveway. Options include lilac,

Grow plants up your walls The government’s climate change watchdog recommends we grow climbing plants up our walls to protect homes from overheating as summers grow hotter. Plant-covered walls can be 6ºC cooler than bare walls, which prevents heat from transferring inside.

Research by the University of Sheffield found that honeysuckle, fuchsia and jasmine were all particularly effective at cooling buildings.

Minimise paving Patios and driveways act as giant storage heaters, pushing up nighttime temperatures.

Having the smallest amount of paving you need – and keeping the rest of your space as green as possible – will switch off the radiator.

Save on heating bills too!

A research project in Italy found that plants grown on roofs, balconies and external walls lowered indoor temperatures by up to 3ºC in summer and reduced heating bills in winter by 10%.

WONDROUS THINGS Rosemary Hawkins talks about the WEA’s ongoing Egyptology course at Wanstead House, which returns next month and invites students new and old to learn about Alexander the Great and other subjects

“I

see wondrous things,” Howard Carter replied when he first peered into Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

In 1972, I marvelled at some of those ‘wondrous things’ at a special exhibition at the British Museum and, 30 years later, I visited the tomb and was mesmerised by the 3,000-year-old paintings on the walls.

Knowing nothing about Ancient Egypt, when I discovered the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) ran courses in Egyptology at Wanstead House, I enrolled thinking I would find out all I needed to know in a couple of years. How wrong I was. I was not aware the civilisation actually existed for more than 4,000 years and that there was much more to Ancient Egypt than a few pyramids outside Cairo and a few temples and tombs near Luxor. Never realising how many different aspects of the civilisation could be studied, 15 years later, I am still learning.

Led by very experienced tutors, each an authority in their own specialised field, students have studied the lives and times of different pharaohs, temples and tombs and the daily lives of the villagers who built the tombs, including individuals who lived there and their laundry lists! Other areas of study have included Egypt’s contact with the Near East, its place in the Bible, its literature, art and textiles, with a visit to the Petrie Museum to look at the beaded dress the tutor had discovered in a bundle of rags. In the classroom, all subjects are supported by visual aids of sites and artefacts. One lecturer even brought along his toy soldiers so we could re-enact one of the battles.

on the walls of their tombs. Of course, until Champollion deciphered hieroglyphs, much of the written evidence remained a mystery, but now there are plenty of texts to peruse in translation, and even while I’ve been studying the subject, new finds have been made which have changed people’s theories about events.

From these classes, some of us have attended lectures with the Egyptian cultural attaché, joined study days at Egyptology societies or participated in study tours of Egypt itself, visiting many sites off the tourist trail where we have been shown around by the archaeologists themselves. At one site, they are looking for Cleopatra’s tomb. However, one of the most memorable visits was climbing down a 10m ladder into a burial chamber. It is at this site that our current tutor spends his summers, recording the finds from the tombs of two nobles. He assures us he will be back for the first of 20 classes that start next month, when we will be studying the Nubian pharaohs, Alexander the Great, the Ptolomies and Cleopatra.
