Welcome... As divisive issues go, the cat versus dog debate is up there with Brexit, fracking and the best Beatles album. Everyone seems to have an opinion and many will go to extreme lengths (such as shoehorning the topic into the welcome address of a magazine off the back of an article about caring for cats – see page 34) to defend that opinion or to sway those slightly less entrenched in one camp to join them in their camp. I have no desire to quibble with anyone's Leave or Remain vote, to argue for or against the extraction of gas and oil from shale rock or to debate the Fab Four's back catalogue. But when it comes to cats and dogs, I have to speak my mind. To put it simply, I'm a dog lover. That's not to say I'm a cat hater, but there is a certain smugness cats seem to possess that makes them less endearing to me. It's a feline trait I am sure stems from their knowledge that the duties imposed upon dog owners to keep their pets under control do not apply to cat owners. Indeed, with their right to roam – thanks to their exemption from the Animals Act 1971 – the nation's cat population act as if the nation is their back garden, and, more specifically, as if my back garden is their back garden. Perhaps a dog will solve that problem. But before I alienate half our readership, there's no denying cats are beautiful and graceful creatures (they certainly glide effortlessly over my garden fence). And whatever side of the canine/feline debate you come down on, there's a lot to be learnt from the heart-warming cat/dog friendships that crop up in the media from time to time. Friendships that arise despite the natural instinct of each species. Friendships which find common ground to coexist, interact and respect one another. Anyway, back to Brexit… Lee Marquis, Editor

The top tier of the scaffolding that has cloaked St Mary's Church on Overton Drive since restoration work began last September has been removed, revealing the repaired and repainted cupola and the regilded clock face and weather vane. "The first stonework repairs to be seen will be those on the east gable end of the nave and the high-level side walls of the chancel when further scaffolding is removed this month," said a church spokesperson. A total of 343 stones were replaced during the work, which was made possible by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Promoting charities locally

Help to house the vulnerable

An annual charity coffee morning and tabletop sale will return to St Gabriel’s Church in Aldersbrook on 2 March. “We have been running this event – where we invite local charities to have a free table to sell their goods or promote their aims – for many years. It’s just a thank you to folk who do things for others,” said organiser Ron Filer. Those with a good cause to promote are encouraged to take part. Visit wavidi.co/stgab

Redbridge Council has signed up to Capital Letters, a new scheme that will enable the local authority to strike better deals when finding temporary accommodation for vulnerable residents by ending the current competition between London boroughs. Backed by £38m of government funding and set to begin in April, it is estimated the scheme will save £270,000 in the first year and is part of a pledge to reduce homelessness.

In an attempt to make themselves more accessible, local police teams are holding more public contact points each month. Police from Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park wards are now operating four separate sessions each in Wanstead Library and Aldersbrook Library respectively (see pages 83–90). "Contact points are a great opportunity for residents to meet their local police teams, where they are able to speak about any of their concerns, report crime or just ask for advice," said PC Sol Khwaja.

The Barts Health NHS Trust is setting up a Community Engagement Action Group to help make the case to government that redevelopment is the best option for Whipps Cross Hospital. "We’re initially looking for four community connectors… Members will engage with people within the area to seek views and opinions and help shape the decision-making process," said a spokesperson. Applications must be made by 7 February, with interviews to be held the following week. Visit wavidi.co/whipps

Epping to Ealing Broadway: the Central Line and its stations

How risky is drug use? Is cannabis more harmful today than it used to be? Is it time we legalised drugs? These are some of the questions that will be addressed at this month's meeting of the Wanstead Park Women's Club when Paul Hayes – the former chief executive of the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse – will provide what he describes as 'some surprising answers'. The talk will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 11 February from 8pm (visitors: £2). Call 020 8925 4875

Many residents use the Central Line on a daily basis, but how much thought have you given to the station names you pass? Jennifer Plummer has given it plenty of thought and research, and will be offering some insight into the history of the line and how its stations got their names (such as Snaresbrook, a corruption of Sayers Brook, a tributary of the River Roding) at next month's meeting of the Wanstead Historical Society. The talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 4 March from 7.45pm (visitors: £3). Call 07949 026 212

Watercolour seascape: artist's fascination with light and water

Extremism and sects: film screening and discussion at library

An artist who was inspired by the beauty of the sea while living in Bermuda will be painting a watercolour seascape at Wanstead House this month."I am fascinated by the sea, and in particular the interaction of the sea and the shore; the subtle changes of light creating changes in the colour of the water. I also love the challenge of depicting something that is never still," said Denise Allen. Hosted by Essex Art Club, the demonstration will take place on 24 February from 2.30pm to 4.30pm (visitors: £5). Visit wavidi.co/eac

Extremism and sects will come under the spotlight at this month's meeting of the East London Humanists. "The event features a filmed lecture – given at Gresham College in 2017 as part of a series on extreme Christianity – which considers the phenomenon through the lens of US millennial movements from the mid-19th century to the present," said Paul Kaufman. The film will be followed by a discussion of the issues raised. The free screening will be held at Wanstead Library on 25 February from 7pm. Visit wavidi.co/elh

LGBT+ History Month: gay writers of the 20th century

Discover the online resources available at Wanstead Library

Noël Coward in 1972, the year before his death

Gay writers from the 20th century will be the subject of a talk at Wanstead Library on 5 February (6.30pm to 8pm; free) as part of LGBT+ History Month celebrations. "Many of them fought against the 'moral' values of the age, and some fought against their desires to write openly about the kind of human relationships that mattered most to them. The literature of the last century would have looked very thin without their contribution," said Nick Dobson, whose presentation will include Siegfried Sassoon and Noël Coward.

Wanstead Library will be hosting a Try Online session this month to help residents learn about and try out all things digital. "Find out how to book a library computer online from the comfort of your home, or how you can make online reservations for your favourite titles when it’s cold or snowy. Studying your family tree? You can look at our amazing archives and start researching your history," said a library spokesperson. The event will take place from 11am to 12 noon on 27 February (free; booking required). hat a difference a decade makes. When Wanstead’s art trail kicked into action in 2009, the organisers looked forward to local artists showing their work and drawing visitors to Wanstead, but gave less thought to the long-term effect it would have on the area. However, some of those changes are now clear to see. Handsome, handpainted murals can be seen outside Wanstead Tube station and on the side of Filika restaurant; there’s even tasteful graffiti on the back walls of Majestic Wine Warehouse. Some businesses have continued to show artists' work for many months beyond the trail dates, or even year-round, giving the area a more arty vibe. Businesses that have exhibited work since last September include The Manor House (upstairs), Filika, The Bakerie, The Larder and Devonsbrook Bathrooms. Wanstead Fish has been a trailblazer, displaying different work – mostly pottery – year-round since it opened. Wanstead High Street now also has an important, extra art display space on the inside walls of the trail’s sponsor, The Stow Brothers. This estate agent mounts ongoing art shows from trail participants and other artists, and welcomes passers-by dropping in. (This month, go in to see the paintings and photography of trail artist Benjamin Wallis). The Stow Brothers has run art trail parties, held workshops for children and displayed fabulous postcard art last year. More plans to entice the public are being lined up for 2019. At the start, the concept of an art trail (a route displaying art; we have had up to about 75 venues) was alien to most people. Now, the 16-day September event is welcomed enthusiastically. (This year’s dates will soon be announced by Art Group Wanstead, set up to organise the trail.) The trail has also worked hard to beef up Vision’s big Wanstead Festival, which was pretty lacklustre 10 years ago and has since become an exciting one-day event that attracts many thousands of people. Trail art and craft stalls and workshops put on over the years, from inventive Lego building to collage and painting, has helped spread the word about the trail. Likewise, spin-off Flamingo Fairs, held at Wanstead Library’s hall,

has attracted more creatives and plays a useful role, helping craftspeople and new businesses to get off the ground, and provides a friendly community event which stallholders and visitors value. Since 2009, there has been a proliferation of art trails across the country. We’ve been keen to encourage Woodford and Loughton, and acted as a catalyst for the Wanstead Fringe six years ago. Meanwhile, the organisers of the Leytonstone and Walthamstow art trails can take full credit for encouraging and guiding us early on. Links and cooperation form the foundations of art trails: artists help neighbouring trails; experienced artists and tutors encourage amateurs; artists working at home in isolation start swapping helpful tips; individuals gradually make new contacts who become good friends. And thanks to the generosity of shop owners, we’ve been able to use free popup shops for a couple of our past trails. We used one for talks, classes and meetings. Even the viewing public exchanging remarks about the art shows, and seeing their neighbours take part, start to get to know each other more. No wonder art trails are recognised for community building. Input from the viewing public is also massively important. I’ve seen amateur artists bristle with pride when a complete stranger has passed a shop window and is heard praising their work. Trail visitors from outside Wanstead will hopefully return to enjoy the area. Recently, I overheard a young man in Wanstead High Street say to his friend: “When I first moved here, people were always asking me where Wanstead was located. Now, everyone knows where it is.” Wanstead’s profile and reputation has grown. And I’m proud to say the art trail has had a part to play. Professional and amateur artists with strong links to Wanstead can keep informed about plans for this year’s trail – the guide theme is 'Time' – by becoming a (free) member of Art Group Wanstead. PREJUDICE TO PRIDE

As part of local LGBT+ History Month celebrations, journalist Paul Flynn will be discussing his book Good As You, which celebrates the transformation of British gay men from enemies to friends of the state

I

n 2014, on the eve of the Equal Marriage Bill passing through Parliament, I was watching a live recording of the first episode of the sitcom Vicious. In the show, Sirs Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi play a bickering old gay couple, together for just shy of 50 years. As the curtain went down on recording, McKellen announced to the audience the bill had passed with an overwhelming, cross-party majority and all legal rights for gay men and women in Britain had now reached legal parity with our straight brethren. There was not a dry eye in the house. It was on that night that I resolved to tell a tale I hadn’t seen written down yet, of the slow march towards British gay equality out of the darkness and into the light. I wanted it to incorporate the personal, the political and the pop cultural. Over 25 years as a journalist, I had been privy to some of the major key changes in the score of British gay life, sometimes by design, often by accident. I was there for the No Clause 28 march in May 1988, then the biggest rally of civil protest the country had even seen, through my home city of Manchester as a 16-yearold schoolboy. I had been at the opening night of the first glass-fronted gay bar in the country not long after. My first professional assignment for a national magazine was onset for the filming of the first episode of Channel 4’s groundbreaking and defiant gay drama Queer as Folk. Only six years later, I was the only journalist to interview Sir Elton John and David Furnish on the occasion of their civil partnership, a new dawn for British gay visibility. These firework moments have changed the shape of our country.

My book, Good As You (Ebury Press, £9.99), was published on 27 April 2017, three years after that night in the company of the gay sirs. It's a story of British gay equality told by some of the amazing men and women who helped that happen, just as it was supposed to be. Some of them are famous, some aren't, and some have never told their stories before because they haven't been asked to. Because I wanted the book to be a felt, personal experience, its timeline is 1984–2014, from smalltown boy to same-sex marriage, a journey I went on as the country did too. It's a celebration of some of the things Britain is really good at like pop music, magazines, soap operas, football, discos, gossip, clothes and even, occasionally, politics. Most of all, it's about something we've been brilliant at during the last three decades – turning gay men from enemies to friends of the state and the pop culture that made that happen. I'm really proud of it, in a totally gay way. Paul's talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 7 February from 6.30pm to 8pm (free; booking required). Call 020 8708 7400 or visit wavidi.co/flynn

Charting the Charter In the second of a series of articles following the progress of Wanstead’s environmental charter, Councillor Paul Donovan looks at the work taking place and how the project is gaining traction

T

he work of getting the Wanstead Environmental Charter up and running is really taking off. The aim of the charter is to bring together the whole community to confront climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity. The ways in which this action is to be taken involves cleaner journeys, more vegetation, less plastic waste and litter, greener homes and low-impact living. The different stakeholders in Wanstead all need to step up and play a part. These groups include the council, businesses, civil society, schools and, perhaps most importantly, individuals. Already, there has been a focus on reducing plastic use and litter around the area. An aim must be for Wanstead High Street to go plastic-free. There are conversations planned with various shops on the High Street as to what can be done to reduce plastic use. It would be great if one of the shops could follow the example of Budgens in Camden, which has moved in the plastic-free direction. I am sure it would be a real draw if at least one of our shops could go down this route. There have been litter picks arranged, whilst the council are at present consulting on plans for a better recycling scheme. Though one key theme has to be to stop producing so much waste. It was amazing to see how much waste was produced over Christmas in Wanstead. Do we really need to use so much stuff? Energy efficiency is an area where individuals and businesses can make a really positive impact in terms of reducing the carbon imprint. Just using things like LED bulbs and making sure when changing appliances like fridges that energy efficient devices are used can make a huge difference.

Councillor Donovan (centre) at a litter pick last year. Volunteers are invited to join another litter pick on 16 February from 10am; meet on the corner of Woodbine Place and the High Street

On the subject of cleaner journeys, the council has been consulting on the provision of electric vehicle charging points (see last issue of Wanstead Village Directory). This is an excellent way to reduce emissions in the area but people have to act to make the demand. Schools can play a key role in making our area more environmentally sustainable. There is already some excellent work going on, such as the edible garden at Snaresbrook Primary. Nationally, there is a drive to cut single-use plastics from schools, with an ultimate aim of cutting plastic altogether. The Wanstead Environmental Charter working group are looking at how all our local schools can be brought together to address these issues. So, things are definitely starting to happen. Much of the information included in this article is already up on the Wanstead Environmental Charter Facebook page. A website for the charter is under construction, ready to go live very soon. However, what is really needed is for more people to come forward and get involved in making the charter a reality. For more information on the charter and to get involved, visit wavidi.co/charter

If we fit new LED light bulbs in a member’s home and they cease to take any landline, broadband or mobile service from us within the following two years (which they were taking at any time after they requested our free light bulb replacement service), they will need to pay a contribution towards the cost of the LED bulbs we provided; the size of this contribution varies between £2 - £8 per bulb, depending on how long their bulbs have been installed. decade to remember Join historian Nick Dobson on a trip back to 1950s London at Wanstead Library this month and discover a decade during which wartime austerity gave way to growing optimism

I

t is tempting to look at the 1950s as the dull decade bracketed by the battlefield of the forties and carnival of the sixties. If the London of the 1960s is in glorious psychedelic colour, then surely the fifties remain in drab black and white? However, the decade which started in austerity ended with Harold Macmillan telling us we had never had it so good! It was a decade of steady progress towards new confidence and prosperity; a march towards modern Britain, seen with greatest clarity in London. At the start of the fifties, the average weekly wage for a man was £9-5s-11d, but meat cost an average of 2/- per pound, butter 4/- per pound and tea 2/6d a pound. All of these items were still rationed in those days. Food rationing ended in Britain by 4 July 1954. A packet of cigarettes cost 3/6d and around 80% of adults in London were smokers. There were some landmark events that took place in London in the 1950s. The South Bank Exhibition was the centrepiece of the 1951 Festival of Britain, held to mark the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and shaking off the dust from war-torn London in the process. Travel back to 1951 and see the South Bank skyline dominated by a cigar-shaped, aluminium-clad steel tower supported by cables, the Skylon, a symbol of the Festival of Britain. The Skylon was demolished in 1952 but other legacies from the Festival endure, such as the Royal Festival Hall. And, of course, had you been in London in the early summer of 1953, you could hardly have failed to be swept up by the wave of public euphoria that greeted the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which took place at Westminster Abbey on 2 June: a new young monarch and a symbol

Queen Elizabeth II waves from the palace balcony after the coronation in 1953

of hope for a brighter future. The event really kick-started the sales of TVs in Britain – the number of TV licences shot up from 763,000 in 1951 to 3.2 million in 1954. Not everything was positive. There was the Great Smog of London in December 1952. Air pollutants, mainly from coal fires, caused a smog so thick it brought London traffic to a halt and killed 4,000 Londoners in a week. However, overall, the fifties in London was not so colourless as they are sometimes remembered. Along with the Queen, other aspects of the decade endure, such as Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, still enjoying its initial run, which started in 1952. The 1950s also saw the foundations laid for a London that burst into bloom and became 'the scene' in the following decade. In many ways, the fifties started London along the path to the modern capital it is today. Nick's illustrated talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 26 February from 6.30pm to 7.45pm (free; booking required). Call 020 8708 7400

At a family workshop in Wanstead this month, Jonathan Ramsden from Cats Protection – the UK’s leading feline welfare charity – will help you understand what your cat is saying to you

T

his month, we are holding a fun and interactive workshop to help educate children about cats and their care. Participants will hear an exciting story about cats and watch it come to life as we explore all the things needed to help care for our feline friends. There will also be a host of fun activities, including a quiz, puzzles and colouring. Perfect for families and children aged three to 12 years, the workshop will be full of interactive tasks. We do ask that parents stay throughout the session to help supervise their children. At the end, everyone will receive a free goody bag to take home. This will include items to help children continue learning about cats and their care. We will also be dispelling myths about cats, giving care advice, talking about responsible pet ownership and providing information about Cats Protection’s vital work (in 2017, we helped nearly 193,000 cats – rehoming around 43,000 of these and neutering 150,000 – and our network has 36 centres, 250-plus branches and approximately 10,200 volunteers and staff located throughout the UK). One of our key aims is to educate people about cats and how to care for them. We believe that helping people to learn will ultimately contribute to achieving the charity’s vision of a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. One of the main topics we will cover in the workshop is microchipping. We will be demonstrating the importance of this simple procedure and how a microchip can help identify a lost pet and increase the likelihood of a happy reunion if a cat goes wandering.

The procedure itself is simple, does not cause any harm and once chips are inserted, cats are unaware of their presence. While we are a national charity, our local presence means we can make a real difference in areas like Wanstead. All our talks are free of charge. However, as a charity that relies solely on the generosity of the public, we appreciate any donations, no matter how small. The Waltham Forest Branch of Cats Protection has been covering the Wanstead area since 2016. Run entirely by volunteers, the branch helps to rehome stray and unwanted cats and kittens and runs a Trap Neuter Return programme to help neuter feral cats to reduce the cat population, while also providing information to members of the public. Volunteers are currently caring for over 20 cats and kittens, all in need of loving homes. Anyone interested in adopting a cat is invited to get in touch. The workshop will take place at Wanstead Library on 20 February, 11am to 1pm (free; booking required). Back-breaking, muddy and sometimes bloody it may be, but management work to create a mosaic of habitats in the Old Sewage Works is helping local nature, especially butterflies, writes Tim Harris. Butterfly photography by Christian Moss

February 2019

T

he old Redbridge Sewage Works ceased operation in December 1977. Buildings demolished and tanks infilled, in 1994 it became part of Epping Forest in compensation for land lost to build the new A406. Bound by Wanstead Park, the City of London Cemetery and the River Roding, the site is known fondly by local naturalists as the Old Sewage Works. It is divided into rough grassland, large banks of brambles and nettles, and a grazed horse paddock. Scattered across its grassy areas are hawthorn, blackthorn, dog rose, oak saplings and buddleia. The whole area is a wildlife treasure trove. In May, when the hawthorn blooms, it is stunningly beautiful. The grassy areas are especially interesting. More than 200 different types of flowering plant grow here, these being pollinated by thousands of butterflies, moths, bees and other insects. In fact, 24 species of butterfly have been noted on-site, many of them grassland specialists. Green woodpeckers can often be seen feeding on the hummocks built by colonies of yellow meadow ants. The Old Sewage Works is also home for at least half a dozen grasshopper species, some rare spiders, a very healthy population of small mammals, including hedgehogs and weasels, and in 2017 a harvest mouse nest was discovered. Left to its own devices, the site would become covered by brambles. Anthills would be shaded out, woodpeckers would lose their food supply, insects that like hot, sunexposed ground in summer would disappear, and we would lose our brown argus and common blue butterflies. That is why on Thursdays and Sundays in January and February the practical work team of the Wren Wildlife

39

and Conservation Group conducts sensitive management work on the site. ‘Sensitive’ because it is more like gardening than the wholesale destruction of vegetation that some people may imagine. We don’t want to eliminate all the brambles; they provide cover for nesting birds, such as whitethroats and dunnocks, and their fruit is important for mammals and birds in autumn. We are trying to maintain a mosaic of habitat types: open grassland, scrubby banks and isolated small trees. We cut and pull brambles that colonise the grassy areas, remove saplings of birch, oak or willow that sprout in these areas, and control the nettle banks that may colonise bare ground. There are winners and losers in any management plan. Birds that depend on the scrub may have declined slightly, but despite this, we still have breeding common whitethroats, dunnocks and wrens. And in the plus column, brown argus butterfly numbers have increased in the last two summers, with common blues at least holding their own. It is still possible to see carpets of germander speedwell and the mauve flowers of grass vetchling each spring. I always find it good to remind myself of this on a cold, wet February day as yet another bramble thorn embeds itself in my finger! Handover Notes If you’ve not yet made a will or haven’t got around to updating an old will, then you’re not alone, bemoans Devorah Ormonde of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

I

n this country, around two-thirds of people don’t have a valid will in place and around one-third of us will die without a will – known as dying ‘intestate’. What are the benefits of making a will? If you die intestate, your estate – meaning everything you own – will pass to your relatives in a strict order of priority that is decided by the rules of intestacy. Dividing up an estate in this way may not be what you want to happen. A will allows you to ensure your estate is divided up according to your wishes. Some of the other benefits of a will include: zz If you have children under the age of 18, you can use your will to appoint guardians, in the event that both you and your partner die.

zz If you have pets, you can leave directions requesting they are cared for by a relative or are rehomed. zz A will can be used to distribute assets in a way that avoids or minimises the amount of inheritance tax your relatives may have to pay. zz You can also set out your wishes and directions for your funeral and whether you prefer burial or cremation. Not married but living with someone? As the law currently stands, there is no such thing as a ‘common-law’ spouse. Under intestacy rules, the only people who can ever benefit from your estate are spouses or civil partners and blood relatives. Many people who are cohabiting are shocked to discover that, without a will, their partner

will not be protected financially and could even be left homeless. Updating an existing will It is a good idea to review your will regularly to make sure it still correctly represents your wishes and takes into account any major life changes. For minor changes, you can update a will using a legal document called a ‘codicil’. A codicil needs to follow certain rules. You cannot, for example, simply add a handwritten note to an existing will. If you need to make a major change, it’s probably better to make a new will. New will? What happens to the old one? When you make a new will, the previous one is automatically cancelled. To ensure the estate is not dealt with under an earlier will in error, you should either destroy the old will or make it clear it has been revoked. If you ask a solicitor to draft a new will for you and this is registered with Certainty – the national will register – they will ensure the new will is recorded as the latest version. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead, E11 2PU. For more information, call 020 8215 1000

Listen and learn In the 14th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to young flautist Daniel Swani who will be performing at Wanstead Library this month

T

he aim of Redbridge Music Society’s current ‘Wigmore to Wanstead’ programme is to promote and support talented young musicians by providing them with the opportunity to perform locally in front of an appreciative and supportive audience. This month, outstanding and local young flautist Daniel Swani will perform an exciting programme of works ranging from baroque to modern in the Churchill Room at Wanstead Library. Daniel was born in 1999 and started flute and recorder lessons at the age of 10. Whilst attending Woodbridge High School, he studied at Redbridge Music School and was principal flute in the Redbridge Music School Symphony Orchestra. Currently, he is a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music studying flute with Michael Cox, recorder with Anna Stegmann and Pamela Thorby and traverso (baroque flute) with Lisa Beznosiuk. Before this, he studied at the Purcell School and the Junior Royal Academy of Music, winning the senior woodwind prize at both institutions. Daniel has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and was principal flute with the London Schools' Symphony Orchestra, performing at the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre. During 2016/17, he was a London Philharmonic Orchestra Junior Artist. In 2012, Daniel performed alongside members of the London Symphony Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games at Stratford, and in May 2014 he again played alongside them at their 2014 openair concert in Trafalgar Square under the internationally famous conductor Valery Gergiev. In November 2016, he performed live on BBC Radio 3.

Daniel is a keen chamber musician and has given recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall, Warwick University and at the 2018 Cheltenham Music Festival. He is a member of award-winning recorder trio Parandrus, which has given many recitals around the UK. At this month's performance, Daniel will be joined by Cathy Davies, a local piano accompanist. Cathy is a piano teacher at Woodford Green Preparatory, Bancroft's and Trinity RC High Schools and is in much demand accompanying musicians for all grades of music examinations and for concerts and chamber recitals. Daniel and Cathy are back again performing for Redbridge Music Society by popular demand and their recital is a not-to-be-missed event. Daniel's performance will take place at Wanstead Library on 19 February from 8pm (tickets on the door: £10; members: £7). For more information, call 07948 500 736 or visit wavidi.co/rms. Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

The Road to Equality Eastside Community Heritage has been recording the stories of Redbridge’s LGBT+ community, culminating in two exhibitions at Wanstead Library this month. Judith Garfield MBE reports

B

ritain now has a strong record for equality; however, this has not always been the case. Until 1967, same-sex sexual activity was illegal and many people were imprisoned, ostracised and faced intense discrimination due to their sexual preferences. Despite the legalisation of homosexual acts in 1967, the battle for equality was only just beginning… and continues today. “We talk about equal rights and equality, equal pay and everything in this country; so why isn’t there equal rights in terms of sexual orientation and everything else?” asks Imran. “I just think it’s sad that we needed all this in the first place. It’s taken so long… so many people have died and been sent to prison because of it; it never should have been like that," said Robert. The Sexual Offences Act of 1967 decriminalised same-sex acts between consenting adults over the age of 21 in England and Wales. Prior to this, thousands of men (in particular) were imprisoned for consensual same-sex acts; figures from the 1950s show in excess of 1,000 people a year serving prison terms because of their sexual preferences. For many of our project participants, the 1950s and 1960s were periods of fear and confusion; they were unable to access information and support about their sexuality and were living in the shadow of potential prison sentences should they be caught engaging in same-sex relationships. For other participants, this first step on the road to equality was a bold and welcome move. “It was a big thing… End of civilisation as we know it! [laughs]. It was in the papers

The first official UK Gay Pride Rally, which was held in London on 1 July 1972

but it wasn’t splashed over the front, it was just 'the law has been passed to consenting adults at the age of 21', because that’s what it was in those days. It was now legal!” added Robert. The dawn of a new millennium saw great strides in the LGBT+ journey for equality. The early part of the decade saw the equalisation of the age of consent (2001), the declassification of transsexualism as an illness (2002) and the introduction of civil partnerships for same-sex couples (2004). The latter was seen as a big step forward in terms of equality for the LGBT+ community and was a big point of discussion for our participants. There is no doubt the LGBT+ community is moving towards equality but there is still work to be done. Thank you to all the participants who shared their stories for this project. Changing Minds and Being Civil in Redbridge are two exhibitions by Eastside Community Heritage in partnership with Redbridge Rainbow Community, on show at Wanstead Library from 4 to 9 and 23 to 28 February respectively. t our darker moments, the campaign to regenerate Wanstead Park has sometimes seemed like Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting for Godot, in which two characters wait endlessly for an individual of that name who never arrives. However, that’s not quite fair. As we wait for plans to deal with major strategic issues to be finalised, there has actually been quite a bit of progress on other fronts. The first is children’s play, where the Friends of Wanstead Parklands have supported local campaigners in securing a dedicated play area within the park. This has now been agreed in principle by the City of London, subject to funding being secured. Secondly, specialist reports have been produced on hydrology, archaeology, historic planting and other matters, with a Conservation Management Plan for the Grotto currently under development. Since 2013, a project steering group has worked cooperatively to explore the potential for removing the park from the At Risk register, on which it was placed by English Heritage in 2009. However, a more informal liaison group of stakeholders was established at the same time and tasked with identifying day-to-day management issues and progressing 'easy hit' projects within City of London managed land. One of the most successful initiatives so far has been the selective clearance of encroaching vegetation around the lakes and along major paths, and the opening up of historic vistas. Given that the park is an important habitat for wildlife, this work needs to be done sensitively, and outside the nesting season for birds and other creatures.

In the fourth of a series of articles looking at the history of Wanstead Park, its current state and the developing plans for restoring this important green space, Richard Arnopp from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands looks at how the views in the park are being improved

February 2019

RESTORING Wanstead Park

Around the Ornamental Water, a roughly 10m strip is being cleared of woody vegetation along the main path adjacent to the lake, down to the water’s edge where the path coincides with it. Though not completed, this work has made a major difference to the northern part of the lake already. Also, advantage has been taken of low water levels to redefine the western edges of the islands by removing fallen wood and cutting back overhanging scrub. A good deal of work has also been done around the Perch Pond. A couple of years ago, the almost unbroken curtain of trees and scrub along the north bank was reduced to a smaller number of mature specimen trees, restoring visibility of the lake from The Plain, and of The Plain and Temple from the far side of the lake. The view now is uncannily like that seen in Edwardian photographs. Further work is under way, with fallen trees being removed from the water around the Perch Pond islands. The intention is to minimise changes to the islands themselves

and restore the open water between them. At the same time, work has been carried out along the path on the south side of the Perch Pond. This was triggered by the need to clear a route to deal with a dangerous tree, but the path was then opened up properly by way of a side benefit. Another area which has seen big improvements is the Long Walk, also known as The Glade, which was once the main eastward vista from Wanstead House. Last August, scrub and small trees were cut back to begin the process of restoring the Long Walk to its original width. Scrub along the boundary with the golf course was taken out. The coming year is probably going to see long-term plans for Wanstead Park finally come into focus, but in the meantime, there’s work being done! A growing club In the third of a series of articles charting the development of Wanstead Youth Club, club leader Callum Alexander speaks to some of the club members

I

n this article, I wanted to capture the thoughts and comments of some of the young people who attend Wanstead Youth Club. So, I asked five of our members the same set of questions: how long have you been coming to the youth club? Why do you come to the youth club? What do you enjoy doing at the youth club? Would you recommend the youth club and why? Here's what they had to say. Angel, age 11 I have been at the youth club since the firstever session. I come to the youth club because it is fun. There are a lot of things to do. I enjoy playing and beating Jenny (volunteer) at Jenga. I also really enjoy the arts and crafts. I would recommend the club because it’s fun; you can make friends and do activities. Eric, age 16 I have been coming to the youth club for less than a year. I come to the youth club to meet with other people and make friends. I love coming to the youth club because it is part of my routine. I would recommend the youth club because the group is really nice and there are different activities. Michael, age 19 I have been coming to the youth club since April 2018. I like coming to the youth club because it is good. When coming to the youth club, I like to play games and sports with others. Yes, I would recommend the youth club to others to come and have fun. Jude, age 12 I have been at the club since March last year. I like coming to the youth club because it means I can play lots of different sports and

get fit. As well as this, I am able to make friends. Whilst at the youth club, I enjoy playing football and table tennis. Last year, I represented the youth club in the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs County Table Tennis Competition. I would recommend the youth club because it is a good place to play sports as there is a big sports hall. It is also good for making new friends. Daisy, age 14 I have been at the youth club since the first session. In the first session, I performed a magic show to the youth club using the stage. I come to the youth club to socialise; I have made lots of friends coming to the youth club. I also come to do activities such as arts and crafts. I most enjoy playing games with my friends and also doing plays and shows to the other young people. I would recommend the youth club to see how the club is and to socialise with others. Wanstead Youth Club is open to 10- to 25-year-olds and runs every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at Wanstead Youth Centre, 144 Elmcroft Avenue. Studying in Style How each child reaches their full academic potential is something every parent is yearning to know. Ash Obhrai of Tutor Doctor in Leyton and Wanstead says it’s all about studying in style

W

hat’s your child’s learning style – visual, auditory or kinesthetic? Identifying one’s learning style allows students to score higher on tests, have better attitudes and become more efficient. Students learn in many ways, like seeing, hearing and experiencing things first-hand. But for most students, one of these methods stands out. Your learning style may be the single most important key to improving your grades. Research has shown that students can perform better on tests if they change study habits to fit their own personal learning styles. Here are two different ways you can identify your child's learning style: zz Paper plane activity The child has three attempts at making a paper plane with verbal directions, visual and written directions and a demonstration of each step while the child folds their plane. Which one was the child most successful with?

zz Learning style memory exercise In a group of children, choose 15 items that can be seen, heard and touched. Have the children pass each item quickly, giving an opportunity to look, feel and hear each of them. When all items have been returned, see if they can recall them. Then discuss the results and ask the children: “What did you forget? Why? How did you remember them? Did it help if you could touch them? See them? Hear them?” Now, the child can learn how to study and memorise most efficiently for their own preferred learning style.

Visual learners Visual learners should study in a private place with no distractions, use flashcards, take lots of notes and write down explanations, be organised, use highlighters, circle words, make outlines and lists, draw pictures, mind maps, flow diagrams, timelines and visualise pictures. Auditory learners Auditory learners benefit from using word associations and songs to remember facts and lines. They should record lectures and classes to play back if possible, repeat facts with eyes closed and participate in class discussions and study groups. Kinesthetic learners Kinesthetic learners should take frequent breaks, keep their body active while studying, squeeze a stress ball or recite information while walking. They can also benefit from playing memory games, engaging in role plays and listening to music while working. y 1991, the population in the Woodford area where the club originated had greatly increased. It is difficult to get a precise comparison from the census figures, but the ward figures were: Bridge 11,681, Church End 8,913 and Monkhams 9,617, giving a total of 30,211. This is approximately four times the population in 1891. With the inclusion of 10,442 people for Roding ward, which covered South Woodford, the total increases to 40,211. Attempts to publicise the club at this time included occasional local exhibitions at the Sir James Hawkey Hall when Reg Fowkes would stage a Woodford Photographic Society stand. Also, the Britannia Building Society in George Lane offered its window for displays. This was used on several occasions in the late 1980s. When Daisy James died in January 1985, the society decided to introduce a five-club annual competition for a memorial shield to be known as the Daisy James Trophy. This was judged in the early years by Dennis Mickleborough, who was a close friend of Daisy James and fellow organiser in the East Anglian Federation. He continued to judge until 1992. The clubs invited to take part in this competition with Woodford were Harlow, Lea Valley, Loughton and Walthamstow. On the first occasion, the competition was well supported with representatives from each club filling the room to capacity. Woodford’s chairman, Ron Burton, opened the competition. The first winner of the trophy was Lea Valley Photographic Society with Woodford Photographic Society the runner-up. Most members at this time did not have the use of a darkroom and were restricted to colour work with trade processing. This tended to split the club between members who produced prints and those who took slides.

In the seventh of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society – which is now in its 126th year – club member Alan Simpson continues to offer an insight into the group’s history

February 2019

Photo by an unknown Woodford Photographic Society member, taken before World War One

Photographic 1893-2019

The minutes for 25 September 1986 show the committee agreed the colour trade prints recently introduced to the regular competitions would be treated as a separate class. A maximum size limit of 12 inches was imposed so no entry took prominence because of its size. The society’s centenary year was an obvious cause for celebration and, in 1992, a sub-committee was formed to plan special events. The members were Reg Fowkes, Marsden Anderson and Terry Johnson. They were later joined by Peter Smith. The society staged a special centenary exhibition at South Woodford Library from 4 January to 5 February 1993. The president of the East Anglian Federation, Stanley Searle, officially opened the proceedings. The celebrations continued with a cheese and wine party and this was followed by a slide show with taped music. A centenary souvenir catalogue accompanied the exhibition. It included the society’s programme for 1993 plus a brief history of the club. The East Anglian Federation Bulletin published an article about the history of the society and the exhibition, noting that Woodford Photographic Society was the secondoldest club of the 150 in the East Anglian Federation, with Peterborough Camera Club being the oldest.

A History of Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society was originally written in 1968 by George Hunt and updated in 2002 by Gillian Hutchinson. Alan Simpson updated the text again for the group’s 125th anniversary. Visit wavidi.co/wwps

Green Walls

At this month's meeting of the Aldersbrook Horticultural Society, Niall McEvoy of Scotscape – a landscaping company which installs green walls – will be explaining why the living wall trend is so prevalent

W

© Scotscape

hether domestic or commercial, interior or exterior, the benefits of living walls for our clients are the same. Not only are they stunning to look at, the plants improve air quality by trapping PM10s (particulate matter less than 10 microns in diameter). Living walls also: zz absorb noise and therefore have an acoustic benefit.

zz support biodiversity, providing nesting habitats for birds and food for pollinators. zz reduce the immediate temperature. Unlike brick and concrete walls, green surfaces don’t store up the sun’s energy in the daytime and release it at night. This creates a cooling effect in the summer and reduces the urban heat island effect in cities. zz insulate buildings when retrospectively fitted, bringing substantial energy efficiency in both summer and winter. zz deflect water away from the walls during heavy rain. The benefits of living walls are even more acute as urbanisation increases and cities become more and more crowded. Bringing nature into the heart of the home or city connects with humans at a fundamental level to improve health, wellbeing and productivity, and for future city dwellers this is crucial. The city brings with it demands on space, making living walls the perfect solution to limited garden space – beautifying otherwise grey expanses of concrete and brick to create mini green havens. Internally, living walls can

bring nature inside, especially when your home has no outdoor space, bringing the feelgood factor to the heart of the home or office. Our commercial clients also use living walls as part of communicating their sustainability targets and to deliver healthier working environments for staff and customers. We work with homeowners, architects and specifiers to create well-designed, healthy living walls. Our unique Fytotextile system supports excellent plant health, which ensures our installations look great all year round. The walls are constructed from a lightweight, semi-hydroponic modular panel system made from a patented advanced Fytotextile fabric. Each square metre holds up to 49 plants in individual pockets. Each panel incorporates a dripline to irrigate the plants through the fabric. Panels can be fitted to flat or curved surfaces and are planted on-site. Many types of plants will tolerate the high life in a green wall, from herbs and fruit to grasses and ferns. Whether in sun or shade, covering walls with plants can enhance any space. Niall's talk will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 12 February from 7.30pm (visitors: £5). Visit wavidi.co/ahs

Dan Brinsdon, head of curriculum at Redbridge Music Service, invites residents to come and hear budding young guitarists in action as they perform at Christ Church this month

E

The Festival Orchestra comes together for the first time just four weeks before the concert. They meet at the John Savage Music Centre in Hainault, and the young musicians, ranging from beginners to experienced players, work with specialist tutors on a new programme of music. These rehearsals give the pupils a rare opportunity to play in a large guitar group, to meet new guitar-playing pupils from different schools and to play a range of different styles. The pupils enjoy hearing and feeling musical styles they might not have come across before. They get a chance to experiment and talk about their playing with others. One of the most exciting aspects of playing a musical instrument is the social side: getting together, playing with friends and challenging yourself to play more difficult music. This is where music-making moves from being a practice on your own at home to playing with others and feeling the excitement of live music-making in an ensemble. As a conductor, I see how a group of strangers who have not played together in a group before come together and forge themselves into an ensemble who listen, play and enjoy their music-making together. The individuals who walked into the hall a month before leave the concert hall knowing they have achieved a wonderful thing: music-making. Redbridge Music Service teaches hundreds of music lessons each week covering all instruments, whatever shape or size, from recorder to bassoon, violin to trombone and

very year, Redbridge Music Service offers festivals for a range of different instruments, and this month, we're bringing a group of young guitarists to Christ Church in Wanstead.

singing. The service offers lessons in schools as well as a regular programme of activities during evenings and on Saturday mornings at the John Savage Centre. Pupils can have individual lessons or lessons in small groups, and at many schools, the whole class learns an instrument together. This is known as WCET (Whole Class Ensemble Tuition) and is a wonderful way for children to have a positive life-changing experience of music together. If this article has inspired you to get involved, and if you already play an instrument or sing, there are spaces available in all our open access groups suitable for pupils up to grade three and auditions are held annually for entry to the borough ensembles and bands. If you want to start playing an instrument, talk to your school music teacher to find out what we teach in your school. The guitar festival will take place at Christ Church, Wanstead on 14 February from 7pm (adults: £5; concessions: £3; children: free). For more information about Redbridge Music Service and other concerts taking place, call 020 8708 2828 or visit redbridgemusic.org.uk
