Welcome... This month's welcome address has been delayed. Several meaningful, yet ultimately unsuccessful attempts were made to complete this paradoxical piece of prose on time, but now it has simply been agreed to postpone the publication of this column. You see, rarely does this page find itself filed more than a few days before the presses roll. But this issue was meant to be different. The theme was decided many months ago. It would be a piece of writing crafted in the EU and published outside the EU. A thought-provoking conclusion on how the future is an amalgamation of new and old – and how it's up to us to find the right mix of change and continuity – would follow an attempt at making some Wanstead-related comparisons (this is a local magazine, after all) to the whole Brexit process. But like Brexit, this month's column is now on hold. I know how it starts and I know the middle, but it needs a good ending, and that's still being worked on. So, while we wait for the column to be completed, I'll leave you instead with a few lines of Lee Marquis, Editor verse to contemplate the future. The future is drawing near, maybe quicker than desired. We don't know what the next day, month or year holds. It's shrouded in mystery. Will we still exist? Or will we be a forgotten legacy? Will anything really happen in 50 years? Could too much change hurt our world? Not all change is good. But in half a century, I believe that the good you can do is Only limited by your imagination. Jessica, Year 6 Snaresbrook Primary School

Garden waste collections

Wheelie bins to be trialled

Redbridge Council's free garden waste collection service will resume this month, running fortnightly until November. “Green waste bags were delivered to every household in the borough last year. If residents need a replacement they can pick one up at a collection point where a limited number will be available," said a spokesperson. Bag collection points and garden waste collection dates are available online. Visit wavidi.co/gdnwst

Redbridge Council will launch new trials of wheelie bins across selected areas of the borough this summer. It follows a consultation on the council's waste strategy in which 62% of respondents supported the proposals. "An audit will be undertaken to establish the precise scale of and areas for the trial, but it will be small-scale. The audit will consider‌ factors such as easily accessible streets and varied property types," said a council spokesperson.

Redbridge Council to bring waste collection back in-house All current Amey staff will transfer to the new council-owned company

June Robins was passionate about pie and mash

Tributes have been paid to June Robins – owner of Wanstead's pie and mash shop – who died last month. June opened her first branch of Robins Pie & Mash in Upton Park in 1966 and did much to keep appreciation for the East End dish alive, with a legacy of shops in Basildon, Southend, Chingford and Romford as well as on the High Street. June's husband, Tommy Allpress, died in 2017. She is survived by children Melanie, Julie and Thomas, eight grandchildren and a great-grandson. "My mum will be a hard act to follow," said Julie.

Redbridge Council has unveiled plans to bring waste collections back in-house by ending its contract with Amey and creating a new council-owned company to manage the service. “We pledged to bring our bin collection back in-house at the last election and we are delivering on that promise. This is a huge win for the borough as it ends our reliance on a private company, reducing bureaucracy and providing a better deal for our residents," said the Leader of the Council, Councillor Jas Athwal.

London City Airport to 'engage with local communities' over flight paths

Young poets impress writing group with future-themed verse

London City Airport will be reviewing its controversial concentrated flight paths – which have had an impact on the airspace over Wanstead since 2016 – with a consultation to take place later this year. "We, along with all the airports in the South East, will engage with our local communities… to hear their views about this complex yet crucial issue, ahead of formal consultation in due course. This engagement will focus on the design principles that will underpin the development of any airspace change," said a spokesperson.

The Redbridge Rhymesters – a poetry group for the over-50s – were joined by pupils from Snaresbrook Primary School last month for a creative writing session about the future. "The children are so talented… and made some very perspicacious points on what they think life may be like in 50 years," said Alexandra Wilde, who organised the event at Wanstead House. The older poets were tasked with penning verses about what life was like 50 years ago. The young writers will return for another poetry workshop in the autumn.

Dental practice to highlight the links between oral health and stroke

Aldersbrook resident receives award for making a greener Redbridge

TOWIE star Chloe Meadows will draw the raffle winners at the event

Aldersbrook resident Gill James was honoured at the Mayor's Community Awards last month, receiving recognition for her environmental work. "Gill has been a key figure in the local community for many decades, as a librarian in Aldersbrook Library. I nominated her for this award in recognition of her work improving the surrounding green space through her links with the Wren Wildlife Group and Friends of Wanstead Parklands… It is no exaggeration to say that thousands have benefitted from Gill's work," said Councillor Jo Blackman.

Funding to improve local cycle links and create healthy streets

Nightfall at The Larder: duo to bring chilled performance to High Street

The Mayor of London has awarded Redbridge Council more than £3m to transform access to Ilford town centre, including improved cycle links to Wanstead. The funding – which comes from the Liveable Neighbourhoods programme – will enable the council to create segregated cycle lanes for safer travel and bridges for pedestrians and cyclists over the River Roding and Alders Brook. Liveable Neighbourhoods aims to increase the proportion of people walking, cycling and taking public transport to 80% by 2041.

The Larder's programme of live music nights – which offer a platform to local talent spanning a wide range of genres – will continue this month with a performance of jazz standards, soulful folk, lounge classics and Americana on 18 April (6.30pm to 10pm; tickets: £6). "Expect a night of pure relaxation… the music will be sleek, smooth and chilled," said Sara (vocalist) and Malcolm McGregor (guitarist), who together form Nightfall. The acoustic duo have played at a range of venues and festivals across the UK. Visit wavidi.co/larderevents

Wanstead Church School opens garden in memory of lollipop man

Children invited to join a dinosaur egg hunt this Easter

Derek’s Garden – a space for reflection in memory of lollipop man Derek Jarvis, who died two years ago – was opened at Wanstead Church School last month. "The school’s PTA worked tirelessly to fundraise for this amazing addition to the school playground, including £1,000 from Percy Ingle, £3,750 from the Aviva Community Fund and £6,000 from the Co-op," said Headteacher Miss Marris. Derek’s widow Evelyn and daughter Sharon were present at the ceremony, when the garden was blessed by Revd Canon Ann Clarke from Christ Church.

A dinosaur egg hunt will take place by Hollow Pond in Snaresbrook this month. "There are rumours about a dinosaur hiding in Epping Forest. Calling out brave, imaginative and energetic nature detectives to help us find her!" said community artist Anna Lopez, who has designed the event for five- to 11-year-olds to include team games, storytelling, tracking and role-play. "Dress for the weather and for kids to get messy!" The three-hour hunt will begin at 12 noon on 22 April (from £11 for one adult and child). Visit gowildfamilies.org

Consultation on plans to combat antisocial behaviour in Wanstead

Local cricket captain to represent England at indoor world series

Residents are being asked for their views on plans to reinstate the powers of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for the west of the borough, which includes Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park wards. The previous PSPO – which expired in October – prevented street drinking, and it has been proposed to update this order to crack down on other issues, including aggressive begging and spitting. If agreed, the changes will come into effect this summer for three years. The consultation closes on 31 May. Visit wavidi.co/pspo

The captain of the Wanstead ladies' cricket team has been selected to represent England at the Indoor Cricket Masters World Series, which takes place in Cape Town this October. "Indoor cricket is a great way to keep fit as the game is quite fast paced and allows all eight players to be involved in the game, as you bat as a pair for four overs each and have to bowl two overs each," said Saba Nasim, who joined Wanstead Cricket Club in 2009. In January 2017, Saba received the British Empire Medal from the Queen for services to the sport.

Wanstead Park's annual display of bluebells will be – weather conditions pending – at its best this month or next. Philip Woodhouse, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest and City Commons Committee, which manages this important green (and soon to be purple) space, discusses this colourful time of year

T

his is the time of the year when the ancient woodland of Epping Forest wakes from the slumber of winter and bursts into colour. The green shades of new life emerging from the trees is perhaps never quite as vivid as at this time of year, making a visit to ‘London’s Great Forest’ this month so very worthwhile. However, if you look around, other cheery colours can be found in the form of flora brightening up the landscape once again. The first spring flowers are boldly popping up ready to put on their fine, long-awaited display. Perhaps the most classic spring woodland flower is the bluebell. Indeed, this flower topped the Epping Forest Top Ten Awards poll as our visitors’ favourite flower to spot in the Forest. Epping Forest is perhaps one of the greatest places in London to experience the carpet of blue on the woodland floor, which can be found towards the end of April and beginning of May, depending upon the weather.

April 2019 Chalet Wood in Wanstead Park is a popular spot for such an experience. You can check the Epping Forest website to find out when the bluebells are at their best this year and plan your visit. We would be grateful if visitors would keep to the paths, and please don’t pick or trample the bluebells when you visit Wanstead Park. The paths have been laid out to help protect these precious blooms. Do enjoy the flowers, but please leave them, as they are for all to enjoy. Leaving them alone will ensure this glorious display continues to be a spectacular annual feature for generations to come. There are, of course, other spring blooms to look out for. The common dog violet is an exquisite little flower in regal colours which can be found throughout the Forest. The cowslip, which prefers more grassy areas, can be commonly found on the Forest’s Buffer Land. The cuckoo flower, with a name that evokes the atmosphere of spring, blooms from April. Look out for its delicate, pale pink flowers in damp meadows and ditches and on riverbanks. Lesser celandine can be spotted brightening the banks of streams and ditches throughout the Forest. Wild garlic has a distinctively strong smell and may be found growing en masse in especially damp areas. Finally, the primrose is an unmistakable, lowgrowing flower which can be found across the woodland any time between December and May. To make the most of exploring the Forest and finding these pretty flowers, the City of London Corporation has produced a book entitled Short Walks in Epping Forest (available from The View – Epping Forest’s flagship visitor centre on Rangers Road, Chingford – and all local bookshops; priced £6.99). The revised Epping Forest official map – which can also be purchased from The View (£4.95) – will assist you in exploring a little further afield. Friends With Nature Helen Robertson, manager of the Epping Forest branch of the Field Studies Council, announces the launch of a two-year environmental activities project in partnership with the Friends of Wanstead Parklands

I

t is well documented that children are losing their connection to nature. Time spent playing and exploring outdoors has significantly reduced; children are more able to identify cartoon characters than real animals and childhood wellbeing and mental health is dipping. A new project in Wanstead Park, Bush Wood and Wanstead Flats looks to change this. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands have been delivering successful quarterly children’s nature clubs and other seasonal events for a few years now, with recent events including an autumn leaf safari and the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch. In 2018, the Friends, a volunteerled group, were receiving more and more requests for nature and wildlife activities. Friends member Jo Blackman and the Field Studies Council (FSC) met to discuss what could be offered to meet this demand. With the support of the Friends, the FSC applied for and was successful in receiving funding from the City of London Corporation’s ‘Enjoying Green Spaces and the Natural Environment’ strand of the Central Grants Programme. The funding will see a programme of family activities during school holidays and at weekends, community activities for local groups and environmentally themed school visits delivered in the local area over the next two years. We are excited by the opportunity to work with the Wanstead community and this project will encourage even more local residents to explore their natural environment and develop a lifelong passion for nature. We expect to run popular activities like pond dipping, orienteering, nature walks and minibeast hunts, but we do want to hear your suggestions and ideas for other activities.

A national charity, FSC has been inspiring everyone to be curious, caring and passionate about the environment since 1947, and we have been working with the City of London for nearly 50 years. The local centre is FSC Epping Forest, based on Paul's Nursery Road in High Beach. Future events will include: zz 16 April: spring in Wanstead Park zz 26 to 29 April: city nature challenge zz 28 May: minibeast hunt Further details of our family activities, run as part of this project, will be published on the FSC website. If you are a local community group and would like to discuss how you can get involved, please get in touch. We will also be sending further details of the project to eligible schools. Riding into the Future Ahead of an open day next month, Aldersbrook Riding School owner Steven Kiley explains why this 46-year-old equestrian centre needs to raise £40k to fund major refurbishments and save it from closure

A

ldersbrook Riding School was established 46 years ago, serving the community in Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Newham and further afield. We are a small riding centre on the edge of Wanstead Park with a strong community spirit and a friendly, welcoming environment for people of all age groups and backgrounds. We offer an invaluable opportunity to those with disabilities, special needs or who are excluded. I took over the riding school in 2017 from Ida Thorne who founded the stables. I was a horse-mad child, grew up in east London, and have always ridden horses. In many ways, horses have saved my life, and I think it is very important to have horses available to those living in the city – they are simply great for people and their wellbeing. Generations of children have spent time here at Aldersbrook, riding and taking care of the horses, and making friends. They learn life skills, like how to connect and communicate with these large, wonderful animals, often much bigger than themselves! Much of my work recently has been trying to break the stigma of the traditional idea of horse riding being a predominantly white, female interest. I have worked closely with organisations such as the Bangladesh Regeneration Trust (BRTUK). Last summer, 1,200 of their children and young adults enjoyed four-week horse riding courses with us, and plan to continue. Currently, 60 children per week attend from Real Initiative, a homeschooling organisation, on a six-week riding course as a part of their sporting curriculum. These are in addition to the local schools and clubs we have been serving for many years, a number of whom bring riders with disabilities.

Aldersbrook Riding School stables and, left, Steven with his horse

We support the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Riding for Disabled Association. Our centre just about makes enough income to cover the cost of caring for the horses and paying the staff. But we have reached a point where a major refurbishment is essential. Our wooden stables, for example, have been here for almost five decades and are now beyond repair. And the toilet facilities need to be made accessible for our less able visitors. We are reaching out to the public to help us raise the £40,000 needed, so we can continue to provide this valuable asset for our community and our future generations. We hope our newly launched crowdfunding page will take our story to a large audience. And our big open day in May will be a great opportunity to meet us and our horses, with exciting activities for all ages, including pony rides, face painting, stable tours, a bouncy castle and a demonstration of the fast and exhilarating game of horse ball. Aldersbrook Riding School is located on Empress Avenue. An open day will be held on 6 May from 11am to 5pm (free entry). For more information, call 020 8530 4648. To donate, visit wavidi.co/riding

the of

From New Zealand to New York, Emma Davies has lived in many places around the world, but now resides near Wanstead Flats. She is one of many artists preparing to take part in the 10th Art Trail Wanstead this September

I

’ve been painting as a hobby for about 10 years. I enjoy the never-ending process of discovering new techniques and subject matter. I particularly like the feel of oil paint. In my experience, oil paint is much more forgiving than watercolour and acrylic as the slower drying time gives more room to experiment. For me, painting is as much about trying things out, seeing and learning as it is about the finished piece. I love getting into the zone in which time becomes irrelevant and I am absorbed by the process.

I enjoy experimenting with different techniques and colour palettes, influenced by a wide range of artists from Caravaggio to Doig. I’m currently experimenting with sand, wax and various ways of applying paint on canvas to create different textures in my oil paintings. Inspired by the Annie Albers exhibition at the Tate Modern and the beautiful work of Michael Raedecker, I recently tried sewing on my oil painting. I found it fiddly, and while it still seems like a good idea, I didn’t execute it well and I’m not yet happy with the result. Some things work and some things don’t! I currently live near Wanstead Flats and enjoy walking on the Flats and watching the light

on the trees in Wanstead Park. At the time of writing, I’m working on a painting of an ancient tree with stories to tell. I’m using wax, sand and oil paint applied with a palette knife and different brush strokes to a cotton canvas. I have lived in many parts of the world. My paintings depict New Zealand, Bali, Istanbul, Crete, Florence, Sardinia, New York and spaces in my imagination. I mainly paint on linen or cotton canvas. I use my photographs and other images to help create the oil paintings. I’ve benefitted from my teacher in New Zealand, Robert Campion, and my teacher in London, Jonathan Waller. I can’t overstate the importance of their guidance and encouragement. Robert taught me to use complementary colours underneath paintings. In the painting depicted here, I first spread red ochre acrylic paint thinly across the canvas. Once it was completely dry, I switched to oil, working over the red ochre so that it peeped through

the blues, purples and yellows of the sea, clouds and sand. I mixed the paint with sand to create the texture in the foreground. The painting was created over a number of weeks, working from dark to light. The painting is of Cheltenham Beach on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. At low tide, you can walk from here, over the rocks under the headland shown, to another spectacular beach. This is one tiny example of the extraordinary beauty of New Zealand. Emma's work can be viewed upstairs in Filika Restaurant and The Manor House. The Stow Brothers will also be hosting an exhibition of Emma's art throughout April. LOVE. LIVE. LEAVE? What happens if I want to live with my partner but protect my hardearned assets at the same time? Jonathan Diamond of local solicitors Wiseman Lee explains the options

M

oving in together can be a wonderful, exciting time for couples. However, recent figures suggest that almost half (42%) of marriages end in divorce. With many couples choosing to cohabit and live together without tying the knot, it is more important than ever to ensure your hardearned assets are protected in the event of an unexpected breakup. Depending on your circumstances, there are different routes you can take to ensure this is achieved. A cohabitation agreement is a highly effective way of protecting the assets and wealth that each person has brought into a relationship, safeguarding both parties from the possibility of leaving the relationship worse off than when they entered it. This is absolutely vital, as cohabiting couples have very limited legal rights. Many people are surprised to learn that there is no such thing as ‘common-law marriage’ under English law. For this reason, it is also important to consider making a will because the law does not recognise a cohabiting partner as ‘next of kin.’ Cohabitation agreements can be drawn up to reflect the specific needs of a couple, including provisions such as how much each partner will contribute towards household expenditure. These agreements are ideal for younger, unmarried couples who are moving in together for the first time and can help to provide some much-needed certainty in the event of an argument or potential split. Cohabitation agreements can even detail the specific actions that might constitute ‘the end of a relationship’, such as one partner’s decision to move out.

If you are moving in with someone who you intend to marry in the years ahead, it might instead be worth considering signing a pre-nuptial agreement. In recent years, these agreements have become increasingly common in the UK as divorce rates continue to rise, and media reports regularly reveal the darker side of what might happen if court proceedings go pear-shaped. In England and Wales, it is typically standard procedure that the courts will divide any assets shared between a married couple equally during a divorce. However, a prenuptial agreement can help to clearly spell out 'who owns what' from day one, ensuring each partner knows where they stand from the outset and that the likelihood of arguments arising later down the line is minimised. Pre-nup documents are particularly important for individuals who are remarrying in later life and may wish to protect a settlement from their previous marriage or ring fence assets they wish to pass on to children from their previous relationship. Aftertaste Ahead of East London Wine School's launch at Wanstead Golf Club this month, school director and wine expert Sam Alder explains why a ski trip to the Aosta Valley left a pleasant aftertaste that lingers to this day

S

o, how did I end up working in the wine industry and owning a wine school? Not a traditional career choice and certainly not an option on the career day at school! My first job was in banking. I loved it and suspect it was there I discovered wine. We 'drank' wine, a lot of wine, but only after work, of course! My passion for 'tasting' was probably thanks to some bad weather and a great sommelier. Halfway through our annual Italian ski trip there was an avalanche; the roads and the ski slopes were closed. We were stuck in the town, we couldn’t go up the mountain, couldn’t go down, so what to do? Obviously, a wine tasting in the local wine bar. Why not? The sommelier opened six different bottles from the local wine region, the Aosta Valley. We tasted them all with glee and listened intently to his presentation of each wine. There was one in particular that helped me understand how and why tasting wine was important, to savour it rather than just drink it. The name of the wine was translated to 'The Blood of Judas'. It was red, chilled, sweet, some petillance (bubbles). We loved it, it wasn’t expensive, just new, different, delicious and, of course, paired beautifully with the local cuisine. Top tip: if it grows together, it goes together. Local wine and local foods are often the best pairing. Everyone in our ski group bought two bottles and transported them home to the UK in ski boots. Back at work, my colleague Mark was talking about the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and how he was studying wine! What? There were qualifications in wine? I had no idea. These WSET qualifications must be the way forward to satisfy my hunger for more

knowledge about wine. It was then I started my journey with WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. I progressed to Level 2, 3 and then to a Diploma in Wine. During this time, the world of banking was changing dramatically. I’d had a great career, had quite a senior role and spent a lot of time, too much time, at my desk. I needed and wanted a change, not just a career change, but a lifestyle change too. It must have been fate. The opportunity to buy a wine school came up and I jumped at the chance. Running a wine business is hard work, with lots of late nights, weekend working, keeping up with the markets and trends, but it’s also a lot of fun and very rewarding. I get to taste some amazing wines, to talk about wine, to meet other wine lovers and experts, to teach and, every now and again, I can diversify into beers and spirits. When you see someone have that light-bulb moment, when they understand why French Syrah is different to Australian Shiraz for instance, it’s so rewarding. Sam runs the East London Wine School at Wanstead Golf Club, offering informal courses and WSET qualifications. For more information, call 020 7622 2148

Talking to Friends

In the first of two articles outlining the speeches given at the Friends of Wanstead Parklands' AGM last month, Richard Arnopp recounts the words of the City of London’s Director of Open Spaces Colin Buttery

C

olin Buttery explained how his department’s remit involved managing the protection and conservation of the City of London Corporation’s green spaces in London and South East England. Among many others, these include Hampstead Heath and the ancient woodland of Epping Forest. Mr Buttery said that the City of London had acquired several large open spaces by Acts of Parliament during the 1870s and 1880s. These had been vested in the City’s care on account of its long-standing record as a focus of charitable activities. Epping Forest had been acquired in 1878 and, in common with the other open spaces, had since been funded by the City using the interest from assets invested in the 19th century. In recent years, the budgets of charities supported by the City of London have been under financial pressure, with a need to deliver efficiencies. Funding granted by the City has reduced by about 25% in the last six years, but self-generated income has increased to help maintain the Forest. Mr Buttery said he had joined City of London about two years previously. However, Wanstead Park was well known in the heritage and landscape world, and he had long been aware that it required substantial investment. What he had not appreciated before becoming director was that the real stumbling block to the restoration of the park was uncertainty over the status of the lakes under new flood management regulations. It was not until 2018 that the Environment Agency finally confirmed the Wanstead lake cascade met its criteria for being classified as 'high risk'. This meant there was a potential threat to life in the case of an extreme flood event. An independent panel engineer had provided initial advice, but a further engineering report

would need to be commissioned before a programme of works was finalised. The lake issue is now the main driving force for the Wanstead Park project. As the essential works are a statutory requirement, the City will find the money from central budgets rather than from the budget of Epping Forest. However, other works to the lakes can be carried out on the basis that there is no sense strengthening the dams without addressing additional issues, such as leakage, at the same time. Such non-statutory works could then potentially be used as match-funding for a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to bring about wider improvements. Mr Buttery said a proposal had recently been made to secure £150,000 for a 'scoping exercise' to pin down costs for the Wanstead Park project. The timeline was difficult to predict, but he suggested an implementation period of perhaps five to eight years might be realistic. Lessons from the Hampstead Heath ponds project would be used but, whatever the ultimate cost, it would certainly be "a big project" costing many millions of pounds. Talking to Friends

In the second of two articles outlining the speeches given at the Friends of Wanstead Parklands' AGM last month, Richard Arnopp recounts the words of Nicholas Munday, Verderer of Epping Forest

N

icholas Munday was appointed Verderer of Epping Forest in December 2018 to succeed Peter Adams MBE, who died earlier in the year. Mr Munday – who has spent his working life as a solicitor and company director – lived until recently at Grade II* listed Hurst House in Woodford Green, one of Redbridge’s most important historic buildings. Mr Munday told the Friends that, in being appointed as the fourth verderer, representing the south of Epping Forest, he was very conscious of following in distinguished footsteps. The office of verderer is an ancient one, going back at least to Norman times. Historically, the verderers’ role had been to administer Forest Law. In medieval times, 'forest' was a legal term for an area maintained as a royal hunting preserve, rather than simply describing an expanse of land mostly covered by trees. Forests were inhabited and managed, and Forest Law regulated the use that local residents could make of them. They were thus primarily legal and economic entities. Following the first Epping Forest Act in 1878, Mr Munday said the role of verderers was revived and redefined in line with the forest’s new status as a public amenity. Henceforth, the purpose of the forest was to be more social than economic. Epping Forest was now a charity almost wholly funded by the City of London. Mr Munday said verderers now sat on the City of London’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, the role of which ranged from the protection of wildlife to the way people used the forest. He saw the role of verderers as being to listen, understand and act as advocates in two directions. They need to explain why Epping Forest does

what it does, by attending events and being accessible. They also need to ensure local people had a voice and that their views were transmitted back to forest managers and the City. Thus, they were in a position to assist Epping Forest in balancing its priorities as well as influencing the delivery of its policies. Mr Munday said he was a local person who had spent all his life in and near Epping Forest, particularly its southern section. He had spent some years living in Wanstead when his children were growing up. He said the front page of the Friends’ website rightly stated the landscape of Wanstead Park was a work both of art and nature. Wanstead Flats was a “fantastic amenity” providing a range of sporting activities, as well as being ideal for dog walkers and other users. In both sites, the challenge for Epping Forest was to balance the way they were maintained to respect history, amenity value and nature. Preservation of the qualities which made them special needs to be balanced against the expectations of local people. Mr Munday said he looked forward to working with the Friends and others to help achieve this. For more information on the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, visit wavidi.co/fwp

Charting the Charter In the third of a series of articles following the progress of Wanstead’s environmental charter, Councillor Paul Donovan looks at local cycling facilities and asks residents to think carefully about their gardens

T

he Wanstead Environmental Charter is really taking shape, with the focus on cutting pollution, increasing biodiversity and combatting climate change. There have been discussions with Councillor John Howard, the Cabinet member for Civic Pride, about improving cycling facilities and increasing biodiversity. Improvements to cycle lanes around Wanstead and linking to other routes in Redbridge and other boroughs are in the pipeline. Cycle hangars of the type seen in roads across Waltham Forest enabling people to park their cycles safely near their homes will soon be available in Wanstead. On biodiversity, there will be more wild areas, with the grass being left to grow and wild flowers sown. Hopefully, the tree pits planted by Wild Wanstead will take off now, after the drought last summer delayed bloom. More is needed, though, if we are to really make Wanstead a cleaner, greener place. It has been pointed out that while the public areas of Wanstead may be becoming more biodiverse, what of those under private ownership? There seems to be a race in some roads as to just how many gardens can be put under concrete. Concreting over gardens will counteract much of the good work being done in the public sphere. These actions reduce the surface area for water to drain away, increasing pressure on the sewer system. Cumulatively, more concrete increases the flood risk for everyone. This was recently noted in a presentation from the Environment Agency about the need for a new flood prevention scheme for the River Roding.

A cycle hangar in Waltham Forest

A real challenge, moving forward, would be to reduce the number of gardens being concreted over and even go further, persuading more people to dig up their concrete and restore the gardens. The community spirit that is so strong in Wanstead has been evident with the litter picks. A growing number of people seem keen to join. And local residents are always supportive when we are out picking up litter. The work of transforming Wanstead into a cleaner, greener place has only just begun but is beginning to take shape. It is, however, dependent on people coming forward with ideas and taking part. New community gardens, planters, reducing plastic and saving energy. Individuals, local businesses, schools, faith and community groups all have a part to play. So, if you have an idea, let us know. There is a Facebook page, Wanstead Environmental Charter, and a website coming soon. For more information on the charter and to get involved, visit wavidi.co/charter A litter pick will take place on Christchurch Green on 11 April from 3pm.

Listen and learn In the 16th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to young pianist Erdem Misirlioğlu, who will be performing at Wanstead Library this month

T

wo essential aims of Redbridge Music Society – now in its 70th season – are to bring high quality, live chamber recitals to the people of Redbridge and to support and promote young, talented musicians via its current 'Wigmore to Wanstead' initiative. This month, awardwinning, young concert pianist Erdem Misirlioğlu will play works by Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin in the Churchill Room at Wanstead Library. Erdem was born in 1989 and started keyboard lessons at the age of six. From the age of 13 he attended a Saturday conservatoire and studied for five years under pianist Mark Fielding at the Junior Department of Guildhall School of Music and Drama (GSMD). Later, he won a full scholarship to study with international concert pianist Martin Roscoe at GSMD. He completed both his undergraduate studies and master’s course in performance at GSMD with first class honours and recently completed his artist’s diploma there. In 2006 he was a prizewinner at the International Rachmaninov Competition for Young Pianists, and in the same year, won the Keyboard Instrument Prize at GSMD. In the 2008 BBC Young Musician of the Year competition he was piano section winner and concerto finalist, playing Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. In 2011, whilst in his fourth year at GSMD, he was awarded first prize in the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe's Intercollegiate Piano Competition. Erdem has performed at many events in the UK and abroad and has appeared at prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Snape Maltings, the Cardiff Millennium Centre and St Martin-in-the-Fields. His Wigmore Hall

recital was broadcast on Radio 3. He gained much by performing in masterclasses given by famous pianists such as Ronan O'Hara, Bernard Roberts, Peter Donohoe and Lang Lang; Lang Lang remarking that Erdem’s playing was “quite stunning”. Erdem is not only active as concert pianist and recitalist but is also a keen chamber musician. He regularly plays with Trio Isimsiz, a prizewinning piano trio, and with the Arnold Camerata, an ensemble of string and wind players from GSMD and the Royal Academy of Music, with whom he has performed works including the Schubert Trout Quintet and Poulenc’s Wind Sextet. Erdem is in much demand both here and abroad and Redbridge Music Society is very fortunate to have secured his services for this recital. Erdem will perform at Wanstead Library on 23 April from 8pm (tickets on the door: £10; members: £7). For more information, call 07948 500 736 or visit wavidi.co/rms. Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

In the 12th of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multi-garden nature reserve – Liz Ranger offers ideas for turning the areas under street trees (or patches of unused ground on your driveway) into an oasis for bees, butterflies and other insects

QWERTYSDFGVCAZXPLK

April 2019

D

id you see the recent news that children who grow up in leafy environments have a greatly reduced risk of mental health issues? Thank goodness residents are beginning to green-up their driveways and that street gardening is thriving in Wanstead. The brilliant Wanstead Community Gardeners do an amazing job creating fabulous, wildlife-friendly flower beds around the place, and there’s also an increase in the number of people adopting treepits outside their home. With more people out and about, trying to bring greenery back to Wanstead’s streets, Redbridge Council has provided guidance on how to stay safe if you’re gardening on the roadside. You can find more information on our website (look under 'local projects', then 'wildflowers under street trees'). And if anyone has adopted a tree base but isn’t quite sure what to do with it, here are a few ideas. In general, use plants that: won’t grow too big and impede the pavement; won’t grow too tall and flop over (it’s not safe to use canes in treepits); won’t take too much effort to look after; and will help wildlife – insect numbers are being annihilated by factors like loss of vegetation, so it’s a shame to go to the effort of planting something that doesn’t contribute anything. Just say no to pelargoniums, pansies, begonias, busy lizzies, petunias and surfinias – there are lots of other options which look great and are loved by insects. The plant ideas here could also work well under your own trees or to bring back to life those little patches of earth that sometimes get left doing nothing in paved driveways. Tree coming out of tarmac, with little soil Impossible to green-up, right? Wrong! There are some fabulous examples of trees like this with established colonies of flowers at their base. In fact, the tough conditions may even help wild flowers grow where weeds dare not tread. We reckon the best option here is to water the area, scuff up any bits of soil as best you can, then sprinkle on some seed – for example, a wild flower seed mix (without grasses), California poppies, sweet alyssum, aubrieta or nasturtium. If you plant them right

now while there’s still some rain, they should need little attention. Then you can just cut them back to tidy it all up in autumn. Compact earth around an established tree It’s a tough environment under a big tree because the canopy keeps the rain off and the soil can get pretty hard. Planting seeds might be a good option – we’ve found they take a bit of time to establish in these conditions, but if you plant them now they should get going this summer, then put on a better display next year. If you can gently loosen the soil (without damaging the tree roots), you might be able to add plants too. Woodland plants that can tolerate dry shade include knotted cranesbill (geranium nodosum), dead nettle (don’t be put off by the name – lovely silver foliage and delicate pink flowers) or try a short variety of Japanese anemone, such as Anemone × hybrida 'Pretty Lady Susan' (watch out, because some varieties grow really tall). Again, you’ll probably just need to cut back and tidy up plants in the autumn. Flower bed under a newly planted tree New trees often have a decent amount of loose soil and, with a small canopy, summer rain can more easily reach the earth. So, if you’ve adopted one of these, really the world’s your oyster. You could create a mini wild flower meadow or grow other plants from seed, but there’s also the option of adding typical garden plants, so here are a few lowmaintenance ideas (pick compact varieties): zz Primroses zz Hardy geraniums (cranesbill) zz Hebe zz Balkan clary zz Lavender zz Mexican fleabane zz Hyssop zz Aster zz Pollinator-friendly bedding, such as cosmos, Nigella, sweet alyssum and wallflowers zz Pollinator-friendly bulbs, such as snowdrops, crocus and grape hyacinths For more information on the Wild Wanstead project visit wildwanstead.org

itter is a perennial issue for residents concerned about the area in which they live, and it only takes a few problem spots and a handful of persistent litter droppers for a locality to quickly become unsightly. Since a number of residents raised concerns with us about litter, we have helped to organise monthly litter picks. Residents of all ages and backgrounds with a shared passion for improving their area have come together over litter pickers. As well as improving our area, litter picking keeps you active, is a chance to make new friends and is a very satisfying way to spend an hour. At our last pick, we had over 15 people join us. Hopefully, the enthusiastic response we received afterwards on social media will mean even more will join us next time. The library now has all the equipment needed for litter picks that anyone can borrow. As councillors, these litter picks help us identify any problem areas for litter. We are then feeding back to officers on the areas we think need more attention from the council’s street cleansing services. Redbridge’s street cleansing services have undergone a recent transformation towards a ‘neighbourhood approach’, which sees teams of staff allocated to specific areas of the borough. There are also officers allocated to outreach and community engagement – recognising it is only by working with the whole community that we can tackle litter. This new approach already seems to be yielding results, as our keen-eyed litter pickers have reported recent improvements thanks to the new neighbourhood manager. Investments have also been made in

equipment, so mechanical solutions are being used where it is more efficient. Wanstead Village will also benefit from a twice yearly deep clean of all high streets in the borough. Enforcement efforts have been stepped up. There are now double the number of enforcement officers operating across the borough. These are bolstered by increased use of CCTV, which can be used to identify and catch offenders. Redbridge Council’s website even features a ‘wall of shame’ where members of the public are encouraged to identify and report flytippers featured in CCTV footage. Fines for flytipping have also increased significantly. Redbridge Council’s updated app for reporting litter and flytipping should be the first port of call for any concerned resident. However, if that’s not proving effective, or if you spot a problem area you think needs more attention, please let us know so we can follow up. And we hope you’ll consider joining us on our next litter pick. A litter pick will take place on Christchurch Green on 11 April from 3pm, then every third Saturday at 10am from May onwards. Written thoughts Ahead of a discussion about her new book Never Not in My Thoughts at Wanstead Library this month, local author Eithne Cullen tells the story of her writing journey

I

’ve always been a reader and loved stories of all sorts when I was growing up. So, it was no surprise that I did a degree in English and went on to be an English teacher. I still love to read and watch films and plays. Working and having a family kept me pretty busy, so I didn’t get the chance to write very much. Coming towards retirement, I was determined to start writing; I’d been putting it off for so long. I began by going to some creative writing classes. I found it hard going into a room full of strangers, sharing my work and hearing their feedback. I got over my initial fears and really enjoyed the classes I took. I was writing poetry, stories and other bits and pieces. The natural next step was to find a writing group and I joined Write Next Door at Redbridge Central Library. It’s a very supportive group and provides a safe environment to write and share our work. Joining Forest Poets has been great for developing my poetry and has given me opportunities to read and perform, which I’ve really enjoyed. In 2017, I performed at Battersea Arts Centre, telling my story, along with other writers, in London Stories Made by Migrants. I’ve been published in a number of magazines and anthologies. One of my proudest achievements has been winning the vice-president's commendation in the Pre-Raphaelite Society Journal Poetry Prize in 2018. This January, I won a competition that called for poems for Burns Night, addressing the haggis! I got involved with the programme offered by Pen to Print at Barking and Dagenham

Libraries. I won prizes for short stories and a poem. I entered the Book Challenge; the theme was ‘real people, real lives’ and I based my first book on a horrible character, the baby farmer Amelia Dyer. It’s a great scheme; being shortlisted meant I was given a writing mentor and the support I needed publishing the book through New Generation Publishers. My latest book, Never Not in My Thoughts, was also published through the Book Challenge. It’s a really different book from the first one. I had the idea of Martin and his situation in my head for a while and found it easy to write his story. It’s a contemporary story and looks at how he copes after his wife disappears. I enjoyed developing the characters and brought in a few different strands to the plot. People have commented that it’s relevant to a lot of the issues that are around in the current climate, and that’s a pleasing response. I’m planning my next book – about a woman who was a prolific poisoner! Eithne will be discussing her latest book at Wanstead Library on 4 April from 6.30pm to 8.30pm (free; booking required). Eithne Cullen: book launch Special guest author talk

Thursday 4 April, 6.30pm to 8.30pm Never not in my Thoughts is Eithne Cullen’s second novel; her first, The Ogress of Reading, was published in 2017 by New Generation Publishing. Never not in my Thoughts is a story of obsession. When Martin’s wife leaves, without any warning, he finds himself replaying the scene in his mind – over and over again. Life with his young family is transformed completely. As he reflects on his situation, he begins to understand that everyone has a story to tell. These stories help him find a way to move on, becoming a story teller himself. Martin is helped deal with his loss by his friend, Liz. Their friendship grows and she reveals her own painful story. She, too, has to come to terms with her experiences and Martin supports her.

Good As You: from pride to prejudice 30 years of gay Brita

Good As You is an important book that celebrates the seismic shift that turned gay friends of the state. It’s a story of how the power of pop culture can place real press media, to make tangible steps towards change. From ‘Smalltown Boy’ to same sex integral to his own personal journey and to so many young gay men who found their voices were finally being heard in the 1980s. This is the story of public outrage and personal loss, the (not always legal) highs and the desperate lows, and the final collective victory as gay people were finally recognised, as Good As You. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

hotographic P 1893-2019

In the eighth of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society – which is now in its 126th year – club member Alan Simpson continues to offer an insight into the group’s history and how it came to be based in Wanstead. Photo by club member David Tyrrell

fter 1993, the fortunes of the club fluctuated. Three of the society’s best monochrome workers died within a few years of each other: Reg Fowkes in 1994 and Eric Bird and Terry Johnson in 1996. All three had been long-time members and rivals in the advanced monochrome competitions. Stan Daniels, another long-serving member who had been projectionist for many years, died in 1997. In early 1996, the club had to move for a few months from the Hollis Room at South Woodford Library while building works were carried out. The society moved first to a room at Tamar Square in Woodford, which was bitterly cold, and then to Lopping Hall in Loughton. Because of the difficulties during these moves membership dwindled, but a strong core of members continued after the return to the Hollis Room. In 1988, the rent for the Hollis Room had been £12.76 per night, but this had increased rapidly, leading to fears the club might become insolvent. Membership fees were increased and nearly doubled over a few years. At the same time, the number of meetings was reduced to help keep costs down. By 1998, the rent had increased to £30.20 per night. The society could not afford this amount and was glad to accept the use, at a lesser cost, of Dulverton – a former dance studio in Wanstead – for meetings. The first meeting held at the new venue was on 15 December 1998. With the move to Wanstead, new members joined the club. They were former members of the defunct Leytonstone and Wanstead Camera Club (LWCC), which had met across George Green at Wanstead House, but which had disbanded because of dwindling membership. Yvonne Dudley, the owner of Dulverton, was also a former LWCC member. During this period, members of the club had some successes. In 1997, Jason Brinkler

had a number of his prints purchased by the National Portrait Gallery. Towards the end of the century there were great advances in digital imaging and the East Anglian Federation decided to accept prints produced in this way. In the same spirit the founders of the society had welcomed new processes and experimented with them, members of Woodford Photographic Society (WPS) now began working with the new digital medium. In 2000, digitally produced prints first appeared in competitions. The AGM in October 2000 changed the classes for colour prints from trade-processed and homeprocessed to preliminary, intermediate and advanced sections, which included all prints, whether produced traditionally or digitally. The society decided to mark the new millennium by undertaking another survey of Woodford, which, like its predecessors, would ultimately be presented to the London Borough of Redbridge for posterity. All members of the society were invited to take part and 16 volunteered to do so; each was given a designated area to photograph between September and November 2000. By this time, the society was the only remaining photography club in Redbridge and, in 2003, it undertook a small photographic survey of buildings in other parts of the borough. This resulted in a set of 48 mounted photographs, exhibited in the Ilford Exchange that same year. A decision was taken in 2005 to include ‘Wanstead’ in the society’s name. Given that the society had been meeting in Wanstead since 1998, this seemed only logical. Thus, WPS became WWPS, yet it took until 2018 before the name was formally changed on the society bank account! A History of Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society was originally written in 1968 by George Hunt and updated in 2002 by Gillian Hutchinson. Alan Simpson updated the text again for the group’s 125th anniversary. Visit wavidi.co/wwps

a a crossroads In the fourth of a series of articles on the future of St Mary’s Church, Revd Canon Ann Clarke reports on some interesting events that will be taking place at the historic venue in the coming months

R

ev Dr Jack Dunn's article in last month's issue of the Wanstead Village Directory explained the changes taking place at St Mary's Church. Changes that will see a new arrangement of services take place alongside efforts to keep this iconic and historic Overton Drive venue open and accessible to all, whether churchgoers or not. The church building itself has been shrouded in scaffolding for some months while undergoing some very necessary restoration of the Portland stone cladding on two of the walls. The exterior cladding was clamped to the original building with iron clamps. Over time, these have deteriorated, expanded and shrunk, resulting in the stone being pushed off. On two sides of the church the clamps are being restored or replaced as necessary. The two other walls will, in due course, have to be tackled as well. This project of restoration has been funded, in the main, by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. As part of this scheme, we have been running various community projects over the past year. These have included monthly themed open days, including an amazing singing masterclass and various school visits. There is also an ongoing oral history project, and anyone who has any special memories of St Mary’s and who would like to be included in this project should get in touch before the end of April. Later this summer, we will also be making a film, which will cover the various stages of the restoration work. The film will also include a lecture to be given on the evening of 10 July by Rev Prof Mark Chapman, conservation architect Ian Angus and Niall McLaughlin, who helped design the Edward King Chapel

in Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire. The background scene of what Anglican worship was like in the 1790s (when St Mary's was built) will be explored and Niall will help us to interpret the design brief for St Mary's by drawing upon his recent experience of designing a place of worship for a modern congregation. To help further illustrate this, the lecture will be preceded by a day visit to the Edward King Chapel on 3 July. There will be a coach from Wanstead and anyone wishing to take part in this trip should contact the parish administrator before 5 May. Finally, on 21 September, St Mary’s will be open all day, offering talks and guided tours of the graveyard, followed by a Georgian concert in the evening, performed by professional musicians under the direction of our organist and choirmaster Joe Waggott. All are very welcome. For information on the oral history project, email revd.annclarke@gmail.com To book tickets for the coach trip to Cuddesdon on 3 July, or for details of the Georgian concert on 21 September, email wansteadparishadmin@uwclub.net
