Welcome... In response to the positive messages received following the publication of an extract of Jessica's poem in last month's welcome address, I am pleased to hand over the rest of this column to the complete future-themed verse as penned by the Year 6 pupil. Normal editor's ramblings to resume next month, barring any further insightful prose Lee Marquis, Editor from our primary school community. The future is drawing near, maybe quicker than desired. We don't know what the next day, month or year holds. It's shrouded in mystery. Will we still exist? Or will we be a forgotten legacy? In 50 years, will we be visiting holiday homes on the moon? Could Sunday brunch with neighbouring alien colonies become the new normal? In 50 years, will we have realised the tragedy of war? Will we still rage on, causing more damage due to the advance in military weapons? In 50 years, will we be quicker and more efficient and be able to send emails telepathically? Could night vision goggles be invented for workers commuting late at night? Will anything really happen in 50 years? Could too much change hurt our world? Not all change is good. But in half a century, I believe that the good you can do is Only limited by your imagination. Jessica, Year 6 Snaresbrook Primary School

Smoke alarm donation

Council award shortlist

The London Fire Brigade donated 1,000 smoke alarms to Redbridge Council last month. "We are extremely grateful to the London Fire Brigade for all they do to keep us safe in Redbridge… This generous donation will help keep Redbridge families in rented accommodation safe and protected," said Councillor Jas Athwal. The alarms will be distributed by the council’s housing team during property visits and landlord and tenant forums.

Redbridge Council is in the running to become Local Authority of the Year 2019, having been shortlisted in the Municipal Journal Achievement Awards. "The MJ Awards is a chance to recognise the extraordinary work of local councils across the country," said MJ editor Heather Jameson. The awards – which have run since 2004 – are judged by 'influential people from both the private and public sector', with the winner to be announced in June.

Aldersbrook Children’s Centre to remain open as a 'main' hub

Wanstead's cinema will be remembered at an event at Wanstead Library this month. Located on the site that is now used by M&S, the venue opened in 1913 as the Wanstead Empire, showing silent movies until 1929, when it was renamed Wanstead Kinema. The venue's last screening was Richard III on 26 October 1956. The Wanstead Historical Society talk on 13 May (7.45pm; visitors: £3), will be presented by Doreen Golding, who worked in the building from 1968 to 2000 when it was a bingo hall and health club. Call 07949 026 212

Following a consultation on the future of children’s centre services in Redbridge, the council has agreed that Aldersbrook Children’s Centre will remain open as one of eight ‘hub’ centres, providing a full range of services. "This is welcome news for the Aldersbrook community, who value the services offered at this centre," said Councillor Sheila Bain. Free access to all services at the centres will now only be available for the first sixth months after a child’s birth, with a fee of £2 per family per session to apply thereafter.

Wanstead Place Clinic's flower beds adopted by community gardeners

Ancient port of London: an archaeological and historical study Workers of the port of London unloading Argentine beef in August 1935

The Wanstead Community Gardeners have adopted another unused patch of Wanstead. "This is the Wanstead Place Clinic, formally the Town Hall. It’s an interesting Victorian building with two empty flower beds. So what does that do for health and wellbeing? Watch this space! We have planted it with our usual mix of cottage garden plants. It should be worth looking at this summer, and next year when the plants are established, maybe it will rival the Corner House.… Roll on tall spires of hollyhocks!" said Marian Temple.

The West Essex Archaeological Group will host a presentation by TV presenter Gustav Milne on 13 May (7.45pm; free), looking at the siting and development of the ancient port of London. The talk will examine a wide range of records, including the geological and physical features of the area together with social, political and trading changes. Gustav – who is a presenter on the Channel 4 series Britain at Low Tide – has been a lecturer at UCL since 1991. The event will take place at Woodford County High School. Visit weag.org.uk

Riding school ready to welcome community for open day

Local artist Chris Thomas has published a book exploring the Laughing Buddha character. "The Laughing Buddha, Hotei and Budai are all names given to a semi-historical character named Pu-Tai, who was a practitioner of Zen in the time of the Tang Dynasty… With the Chinese diaspora he travelled around the Pacific rim and is now ubiquitous throughout the world," said Chris, whose artwork from the book entitled Every Day is a Good Day is on display at Wanstead Library until 6 May. Redbridge Council has launched a consultation about plans to tackle air pollution. Proposals under consideration include additional parking charges for ‘dirty’ diesel vehicles (those below the Euro 6 standard) and clean air zones around schools, which will see roads leading to educational establishments closed to traffic at the start and end of the day. Responses to the consultation – which is open until 23 June – will shape the council’s Air Quality Action Plan for the next five years. Visit wavidi.co/cleanair

Two hedgehog houses have been installed in the graveyard at St Mary's Church. The boxes – made with reclaimed wood by a local parishioner – are concealed in the undergrowth and will be kept replenished with food and water. "UK hedgehog numbers have plummeted by up to 95% since the 1950s, but a few have been spotted in Wanstead. Everyone can help by ensuring fences include holes (13cm x 13cm) to allow hedgehogs to forage between gardens," said a spokesperson for the Wild Wanstead campaign.

Wanstead High School pupils win London City Airport contest

The programme finale was held at the Sunborn London Yacht Hotel in Royal Victoria Dock

Students from Wanstead High School were announced as winners of London City Airport’s Women in Aviation programme last month. Since January, the airport has worked with students from 10 different schools to highlight the opportunities in the aviation industry. Participants were tasked with submitting proposals for London City Airport’s new terminal, which is currently being built as part of a £500m transformation. The prize includes a mentor session and a visit to the Emirates Aviation Experience.

Wanstead Library will be taking part in the nationwide 30th birthday celebrations for Elmer the Patchwork Elephant this month. "For 30 years Elmer has stood for accepting who you are and celebrating difference. We are all different… The differences are what make the world so rich," said author and artist David McKee, who first published Elmer in 1989. Elmer Day is on 25 May, with the library offering free elephant-themed craft activities for four- to 12-year-olds and creating Elmer stained glass windows from 11am to 12 noon.

a wander around

naresbrook S

As part of Local History Month, Lynn Haseldine Jones will be leading a walk around Snaresbrook to discover the history of this commuter suburb, starting with the Georgian period and then looking at later developments in Victorian and Edwardian times. Here, the local historian describes some of the sites that will be visited. Photo of Snaresbrook Crown Court by Geoff Wilkinson

May 2019

W

e begin at Snaresbrook Station, where the railway first came in 1856. Changing the nature of the village from a predominantly Georgian settlement to a bustling Victorian suburb, there is still evidence of the Great Eastern Railway, hardly noticed by passengers on the busy Central Line. Along Hollybush Hill are a few Victorian houses. Mornington Lodge has changed its name to Kingsley Grange, but Staffa and Iona are still there, though no longer Barnardo’s homes. The great feature of the Hill, though, is Snaresbrook Crown Court. This fine building began as the Royal Infant Orphan Asylum, the foundation stone of which was laid by Prince Albert on 24 June 1841. The official opening was by the king of the Belgians on 27 June 1843. The building later became the Royal Wanstead School until 1971, before becoming the court building it is today in 1974. Along Snaresbrook Road we can admire the court from the edge of the much-loved Eagle Pond, as pictured here. This appears on a map of 1735 but may be older. Across from the pond is Willowholme, a Georgian house dating from the 1750s, with its own well. People living in less grand houses would have got their water from the Birch Well, which is still there, tucked into the forest by the court’s railings. Elegant White Lodge is further down the road. Also

on Snaresbrook Road is the memorial garden, containing a lovely sundial, the scene of a service on 11 November every year. As we turn the corner into Woodford Road, we pass the 18th-century Eagle pub (now beautifully refurbished); it was a stopping point for stage and mail coaches long before the railway arrived. We will head towards The Drive to admire some of the large late-Victorian houses, and glance across the road to James Hilton House, thought to have been the home, in the 1930s, of James Hilton, the author of Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr Chips. Sadly, some of the big houses have long gone – Snaresbrook Hall was replaced by flats in the 1930s and Hermitage Court replaced two large mansions. Gowan Lea lasted longer, a school with a good reputation, but regrettably, now also replaced by flats. And we end our tour at the gates of Snaresbrook House. Although the origins of the house go back much further, these are dated 1900 and marked with the initials of diamond merchant David Symons, who lived there from 1891 to 1905. After his wife died, he chose to move to South Africa, where his main business was located. But the area must have made a big impression on him as the home he had in Durban until his death in 1935 was called…Snaresbrook!

Lynn's walk will depart from Snaresbrook Station at 2pm on 22 May (free; booking required). Visit wavidi.co/snaresbrookwlk or call 020 8708 2417

Future for Whipps Wanstead resident Charlotte Monro explains her involvement in the campaign to ensure the community has a strong voice in Whipps Cross Hospital's redevelopment plans

A

new hospital is being proposed for Whipps Cross with a health ‘campus’ on the site. This is a once-in-ageneration opportunity. We want a hospital designed to the best of standards, and which will meet our health needs of the future. But with the resource-starved NHS of today this won’t happen unless we all fight for it. I have worked in the local health service as an occupational therapist since moving to Wanstead in the mid-1980s with my husband Stuart and our young daughter. For much of that time, I have also been a union rep and campaigned to protect services. Just 13 years ago Whipps Cross Hospital was fighting for its existence. Staff and the local community came together in the Save Whipps Cross campaign, gaining huge support. We succeeded. Then, again in 2013, the future of the hospital felt uncertain when, following the merger into Barts Health, we were sinking under devastating staff cuts accompanied by a climate of fear. I found myself sacked after speaking out over cuts in our stroke unit and reinstated after a long fight supported by colleagues, unions and health campaigns. So, I was truly happy to be speaking at a recent packed public meeting about building a new Whipps Cross, also addressed by John Cryer MP and Alwen Williams, Chief Executive of Barts Health. The health campaign group Waltham Forest Save Our NHS organised the meeting to bring the potential new hospital to the attention of the public, and to set out some crucial concerns. Will there be enough beds and capacity for the fast-growing population? This is a must. Our campaign is challenging the initial proposal to provide fewer beds than there are currently. We want public funding – no more crippling PFI-type

debts. There must be enough land for future expansion needs; key worker housing for health staff; and proper public and staff involvement and consultation. Why is a new hospital so urgent now? The age and layout of the buildings cause constant difficulties for care and make the hospital much more expensive to run. I remember many a risk assessment on staff trundling laden cages across the uneven road and pavement surfaces, or doorways too narrow for modern hospital beds. But most of all, the daily problem of lack of space on nightingalestyle wards. As you assist a patient from their bed to their chair or commode, it is quite an art to avoid the next patient sitting a few inches away, let alone privacy and infection control being compromised. A new Whipps is not yet a certainty. But Barts Trust has been given the go-ahead to develop the next stage of planning, reiterated by the Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock, when he visited Whipps in March. For more information on the Waltham Forest Save Our NHS campaign or to invite a speaker, visit wavidi.co/savenhs. For information on the future of Whipps Cross Hospital, visit wavidi.co/whipps

Charting the Charter In the fourth of a series of articles following the progress of Wanstead’s environmental charter, Councillor Paul Donovan says it's time for the real work to begin now that the charter has been officially launched

A

The human being is the most destructive creature on the planet. What other animal wantonly and consciously destroys the life system on which it depends? The latest report from the International Panel on Climate Change warned that there are 12 years to save the world from the ravages of climate change. There are 50,000 deaths in the UK every year due to pollution, some 9,500 in London alone. Then there is the incredible loss of biodiversity over recent years, with 25% of mammals, 41% of amphibians and 13% of birds under threat. So, there is need for urgent action. The response in Wanstead has been the launch of the Environmental Charter, which seeks to address climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity. There are five themed areas through which we are seeking to meet this challenge: cleaner journeys, more energy efficiency, creating less litter and recycling more, improving biodiversity and living more sustainably as individuals. None of this will work if people don’t come forward to join the process. The council, businesses, schools, civil societies and individuals all have a role to play. There were commitments made across the different groups at the official launch of the charter on 2 May. The council is looking at how pollution can be cut. The issue has been out to consultation, with Redbridge already announcing exclusion zones around some schools. Cycling is being encouraged with residents free to request cycle hangars in the road. The roads should be made safer as well, thereby encouraging more people to get out on their bikes.

© Geoff Wilkinson

good start has been made on the Environmental Charter, but now the real work begins to make Wanstead a cleaner, greener place.

Christchurch Green

The biodiversity strand is being pursued by groups like the community gardeners and Wild Wanstead. However, this is a particular area where people need to act individually in their own homes. Snaresbrook Primary School has developed an edible garden, whereby the children are learning all about growing their own food. More such ventures in local schools would be welcome. The litter pickers go from strength to strength, with the well-attended session last month drawing in many people to clear up our area. And there is a petition calling on local businesses to ban single-use plastics. The hope is that Wanstead High Street will become a single-plastic-use-free zone. So, things are beginning to happen to attain those greater goals of a more sustainable way of life, but there is still a long way to go. Small changes are good, but if climate change, pollution and biodiversity are really to be tackled, there needs to be a whole shift of culture. There is much to be done but an encouraging start has been made toward making Wanstead a cleaner, greener place. For more information on the charter and to get involved, visit wavidi.co/charter

MY life of crime As part of National Crime Reading Month at Wanstead Library, author Sandra Prior will be discussing her five-book series about the Taylor crime family. Here, the Dagenham-born writer explains how it all began

I

grew up happy and healthy with four sisters, a brother and parents who lived in the same Dagenham home for more than half a century. I like to describe my childhood as 'sunny and safe', living in a place where you could play for hours and wander the streets with your friends, without any fears. Today, I live in Clacton with my partner, my youngest son and my dog, who was kind enough to let me write in between our walks on the beach. Unlike other writers, I took a different path to get where I am today. I studied sociology through The Open University, which led me to the University of East London, where I earned a degree in cultural studies. For years, I dreamed of writing a book. Alas, like so many of us, my dream sat in the back of my mind, collecting dust. After all, I had a demanding career and a busy family life. How can you add writing a book to all of that? For years, I told myself there wasn’t enough time, that I wasn’t organised enough to pull it off, and that it was a nice thought but not something that you actually go out and do. But then, one day, my life completely changed when I flipped through the pages of a magazine and read about a man named Anthony Robbins and something called 'life coaching'. I went to one of Robbins’ London seminars and actually managed to walk across a 15-foot bed of burning coals! From there, I decided that if I was going to make the most of my life, I would have to 'keep walking'. That’s when I decided to make my writing real instead of just a fantasy that lived deep in my mind. I sat down and began working on Dangerous, with just Stevie Wonder, Bob

Marley, Barry White, Rod Stewart and the like to keep me company. Through the laughter, the tears, the shouting and the frustration, I was able to realise my dream and finish the book. Oh sure, there were times when I didn’t think I was going to make it. On more than one occasion, I considered tossing the half-finished manuscript in the bin and calling the whole thing off. So, when I finally got to write the words 'The End' on that first novel, it was a huge accomplishment and a big relief! However, Dangerous’ ending was really just the beginning. Today, I am the proud author of The Kingmaker, the fifth book devoted to the Taylor crime family. While I still spend time running my domiciliary care agency business, I have now replaced all of those long hours with just a couple of trips to the office every month. Most of the time, I handle everything over the phone or through email. That way, I have plenty of time to write! Sandra will be discussing her writing at Wanstead Library on 17 May from 6pm to 8pm (free; booking required) – call 020 8708 7400. For more information on Sandra's books, visit sandraprior.co.uk

Good As You: from pride to prejudice 30 years of gay Brita

Good As You is an important book that celebrates the seismic shift that turned gay friends of the state. It’s a story of how the power of pop culture can place real press media, to make tangible steps towards change. From ‘Smalltown Boy’ to same sex integral to his own personal journey and to so many young gay men who found their voices were finally being heard in the 1980s. This is the story of public outrage and personal loss, the (not always legal) highs and the desperate lows, and the final collective victory as gay people were finally recognised, as Good As You. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Moods of London As part of Wanstead's Cityread London 2019 celebrations, historian Nick Dobson will be offering an illustrated look at the various moods of London over the centuries as seen through the eyes of diarists

O

ver the centuries, diarists have chronicled London in both triumph and disaster, recording the great events and the everyday. They have captured the city in all its aspects and all its moods. Let us explore some of these moods as seen through the eyes of the famous and the hitherto unknown. Many a diarist has been captivated by the majesty of the capital. Even in the late 15th century, a Venetian diplomat wrote: “All the beauty of this island is confined to London." Some 300 years later, Dorothy Wordsworth’s description of the beauty of London viewed from Westminster Bridge inspired her brother William to write one of the most quoted of all sonnets: “Earth has not anything to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by. A sight so touching in its majesty.” However, London can also be dangerous, squalid and distinctly smelly. In 1858, Home Secretary Spencer Walpole complained to his diary that: “We can colonise the remotest ends of the earth… but we cannot clean the River Thames.” That was during 'The Great Stink', when the smell of untreated waste on the banks of the River Thames almost forced Parliament to move to Oxford. On the positive side, it did prompt legislation that brought in a modern sewerage system. Diarists have recorded the impact of great events in London: plague, fire and war. The diaries of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn provide us with details of the Great Fire of 1666 that no official history would include. Pepys captures the heartbeat of the city, conveying the grief of Londoners in this almost poetic diary entry: “We saw the fire as only one entire arch of fire from this to the other side the bridge, and in a bow up the hill

for an arch of above a mile long: it made me weep to see it.” We also have personal glimpses of life on the Home Front during the First World War. Eighteen-year-old Alice Marshall described her horror at seeing a young man being shamed as a coward by women: “I saw a sight that left me feeling disgusted! Four well-dressed women not much older than me, I should think, surrounded a young man who was passing by and forced large white feathers into the lapel of his jacket.” When she approached the young man, Alice recognised a neighbour who was only 15 and who had already lost an older brother, killed in action at the Battle of Loos. London can be a lonely place. The great comedy actor Kenneth Williams wrote: “I’m still walking about this city dragging my loneliness with me, putting on a front, whistling in the dark. It is getting darker all the time.” But it is a great city and the novelist Henry James enthused: “It is difficult to speak adequately or justly of London. It is only magnificent.” Nick's talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 10 May from 6.30pm to 7.45pm (free; booking required). For more information, call 020 8708 7400

Art for the trees A

s a traveller, I have always enjoyed looking at art as an art tourist and it was while in Madrid in 1988, that I went to the Prado Museum and saw The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. I was captivated and my love of art history began. Frustrated with my career in the banking industry, I decided to return to study in the 1990s while still working full-time. I did an A level in Art History and the following year enrolled with The Open University and studied all the art history modules available at that time. By 2002 I achieved a BA Honours. While studying a modern art module in 1999, I decided to have a go myself. I bought a set of acrylics and some paper, and never looked back. I’ve been painting now for nearly 20 years. Over the years, I have experimented with pretty much all media, but I always return to acrylics as I love the flexibility and immediacy of the medium, which suits my style of painting. I often change my mind about a planned composition or colours, and with acrylics, it is usually easy to paint over and change. With such a diversity of types of

Epping Forest is a constant source of inspiration for self-taught artist Sue Mayne, who is one of many local creatives preparing to take part in the 10th Art Trail Wanstead this September acrylic paints on the market, experimentation is so interesting and rewarding. I rarely produce a painting in one sitting, and if it’s of a local scene, I often revisit the site many times to contemplate the next stage of the painting. I always have my camera with me, taking photos of good compositions for a painting, and reinterpreting them back in my studio at the bottom of my garden. Many of my paintings are of landscapes from my travels. A love of walking, especially in the forest, has inspired me to focus on my paintings of Epping Forest over the last couple of years. Every forest painting is a specific location – favourite spots include Connaught Water, High Beach, Highams Park Lake, Wanstead Park… I could go on… I just love our beautiful local forest! I have exhibited and sold many paintings in exhibitions over the years. My first solo exhibition was at the Lopping Hall Gallery in Loughton in 2016. In November 2018, my second solo exhibition was at The View in Chingford. As a member of Essex Art Club, I will be exhibiting at their exhibition at The View until 5 May. I will also be taking part in Woodford Arts Group's exhibition at Packfords Hotel in Woodford Green from 31 May to 2 June.

choose yourself Happy Happiness is a choice based on our internal representations, says psychotherapist Usha Chudasama, who is hosting two workshops at Wanstead Library this month as part of Mental Health Awareness Week

I

nternal representations are the pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells and selftalk that our brain sifts through when information comes via our five senses. Our brain is bombarded with so much information that it will delete, distort and generalise all that input and form an idea of what it all means – this also creates our belief systems and plays a large part in our perception, self-talk and level of happiness. Positive self-talk is essential for success and happiness. We judge other people and ourselves by the messages we receive and the perspectives we take on as ours. She’s so "tall/ short/fat/skinny" or I’m so "stupid/kind/fat/ amazing" etc. These are all labels that become our inner voice – our inner self-talk. What labels do you use for yourself or others? Have you ever stopped to hear the thoughts in your head? Have you stopped to see the images your mind creates? Most people I work with are either not aware of their pictures or thoughts or they can’t stop that constant chatter in their heads and react in situations rather than giving a thoughtful response and then feel bad about themselves afterwards. The thing is that the images you create or the words you use to describe yourself and others are constantly shaping your world and the world around you. When I have worked with people in therapy, they have sometimes used incorrect labels which then makes them live lives that keep them in a mental prison based on that label. For example, if they always call themselves “stupid”, then the danger is that they begin to live up to that label. The language you use to speak to yourself is so important and powerful because unconsciously you will act 'stupid' and it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. That means

you will start to believe it because your mind will recall memories or pictures of times when you felt stupid and interpret this event like the ones before. What makes people happy is directly connected with the words and pictures they consistently use. This is because our brains are designed to find what we look for. What if you called yourself 'clever', 'magnificent' or 'smart'? By changing the words and mental images we use to label ourselves, we change the way we think about ourselves. Also, as our brain thinks in pictures, having positive images of ourselves and the goals we want to reach helps us manifest positivity and happiness in our lives. What you have to remember is that the labels you use and the pictures you make in your mind need to be kind. What makes people happy are realistic labels that empower you. These kinds of labels become your identity. Usha will be running two workshops at Wanstead Library: Cultivating Happiness Skills on 11 May from 3.30pm to 4.30pm (free) and Creating a Vision Board on 18 May from 3.30pm to 5.30pm (tickets: £4). I

© Steve Freeder

have always been interested in photography, especially taking photos on holidays and when visiting places of interest, such as stately homes, castles and gardens. I enjoy composing picturesque landscapes, sunsets and love reflections in water. I have used several makes and types of camera over 50-plus years, starting with a simple point-and-shoot Kodak Brownie film camera, then onto SLRs, Advanced Photo System (useful for panoramas), pocket digitals and finally, a couple of bridge cameras. I must admit, an SLR is probably what I should still be using, as I am told I am likely to suffer some loss of quality with anything else. However, I do not want to carry the additional lenses that many photographers do. The weight and bulk is a problem for me and I would definitely not use the equipment to the same extent as my present camera, a Canon SX60, which looks like an SLR only more compact and without the need to change the lens barrel. It has a massive 65x optical zoom lens (SLR equivalent of 1365mm). It can shoot in raw mode and I have taken some wonderful photos with it – well, I like them anyway! I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society about 18 months ago, inspired by my friend and fellow member Ray Benn, whose holiday slide shows I enjoy immensely. I regularly attend and enter competitions, but have so far not managed to be among the leading entries. I listen to the judges and take on board what they say and how I could have done better and I am aiming to improve on my techniques. I bought editing software

Photoshop Elements last year and have been reading up and viewing training videos on the various techniques available. I try to compose my photos carefully to eliminate the need for major adjustments but appreciate what is at hand when I need to use it. I would like to be able to take better portraits, especially of my grandchildren, but find it can be difficult to capture what I consider to be high-quality images. I do find that outdoors is best on a day which is bright but not to the extent where the subject squints or ends up with uneven skin tones. Indoor photos can be difficult, especially when a flash is used, as it can create nasty shadows behind. I am experimenting with a flash gun both on and off the camera and my goal is to produce consistently good work. I will be relying on tips from my fellow club members to reach that goal. A growing club In the fifth of a series of articles charting the development of Wanstead Youth Club, club leader Callum Alexander reports on first anniversary celebrations and appeals for music and gardening volunteers

I

n the last article, I highlighted a year of growth and development at Wanstead Youth Club – which is based at Wanstead Youth Centre – leading to a one-year celebration event in March. There was a great turnout and atmosphere for the celebratory event, which was attended by a wide range of people, including the Wanstead Youth Club management committee, the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs management committee, Vision RCL, councillors Bob Littlewood and Sham Islam and Redbridge Children and Young People’s Network (RCYPN), as well as parents, club members, and, of course, our volunteers. The event brought young people and the community together to celebrate the achievements of the club. Throughout the evening, there were speeches from a range of people who expressed their support for the work and achievements of the club while also encouraging those in attendance to spread the word and encourage new members to attend. There was also a range of sports and activities for everyone to engage in, giving an insight into what the young people get up to on a weekly basis. Since the event, we have seen yet another rise in the number of people coming along to the club and attendance is now consistently in excess of 20 young people per week. This is yet another positive step towards the sustainability of the youth club. With this increase in numbers, we are also seeing a higher number of young people keen to utilise the music studio, and therefore we are seeking a volunteer with an interest or knowledge in this area to help the young people get the most out of having access to such a fantastic studio.

Club members and guests at the anniversary event

With the weather beginning to brighten up, we are looking to begin our gardening project. This will be a new and fresh project for the youth club that we hope will appeal to a broad range of young people. Again, as with the music, if there is anyone with an interest or knowledge in this area who is keen to volunteer and help us run this part of our club, please contact us. As a result of the growing numbers, we are working towards offering an additional session. We will develop a programme that complements our existing Thursday session, offering lots of new and alternative activities. With growing membership, there is a need for more volunteers to support the sessions. If you would like to volunteer your time and expertise, please get in touch. Likewise, if you are interested in sponsoring a project or activity at the club, we would love to hear from you. Wanstead Youth Club is open to 10- to 25-year-olds and runs every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at Wanstead Youth Centre, 144 Elmcroft Avenue. W

ild Wanstead is attempting to develop a patchwork of mini nature reserves across Wanstead by encouraging anyone with a front or back garden to include wildlife-friendly plants and features that mean it can be a valuable habitat for bees, butterflies, birds and other creatures… not just dead space. But the project isn’t restricted to houseowners. Many blocks of flats have grounds that could also be turned into an oasis for wildlife. That was the vision of staff and residents at The Abbeyfield Society’s assisted living apartments for older people in Wanstead. Recently, volunteers came together to spend the afternoon transforming a boring patch of grass with little biodiversity value into a new wildlife garden that will start providing food and shelter for a wealth of creatures as it establishes and grows over the coming months and years. The garden includes a number of key features to help London’s ailing wildlife. Two wildflower meadow areas were made by lifting and removing turf before raking the earth over and planting a British wildflower seed mix that contains more than 15 different species, such as yarrow, knapweed, meadowsweet, cowslips and ragged robin. Once established, the flowers should provide a lasting display throughout summer and will just need cutting once a year in September. Floral native shrubs were dotted around the edges of the garden area, including hawthorn, crab apple, dog rose and honeysuckle. By the patio, two more traditional flower beds were dug out and filled with bee-loving garden plants like hardy geraniums, alliums, verbena and periwinkles. The garden was completed with a couple of heritage apple trees and a fantastic bug house and planter, made using reclaimed wood by a local resident. The Abbeyfield Society is a charity for older people that aims to tackle loneliness and isolation. They hope the new wild garden will provide a place for residents at the flats to come together to tend and enjoy.

SIMPLE SPLIT? Considering a divorce or separation? The process is often not as straightforward as you may hope, says Jonathan Diamond of local solicitors Wiseman Lee. Here’s what you need to know

A

lthough divorce has become commonplace, many people wrongly assume that ending a marriage is as simple as filing a document to seek a divorce. However, it’s rarely as straightforward as this. To further confuse matters, many people are uncertain of the differences between divorce and legal separation, or whether they can simply split amicably, as Gwyneth Paltrow famously said, by “consciously uncoupling.” It’s time to put the record straight – here’s what you need to know. Currently in the UK, there is no such thing as a ‘no-fault divorce’. Following a recent review by the government, there are now plans to change the law so that couples will be spared the emotional stress and strain of blaming their partner for the breakdown of the marriage. However, this new legislation has not yet entered the statute books, which means that at this time there is only one legal ground for divorce, which is that the marriage has ‘irretrievably broken down’. The person who starts proceedings needs to prove the marriage is at an end by establishing one of the following facts: adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, separation with consent (where a couple have been separated for at least two years and the other party agrees to the divorce) or separation without consent (if a couple have been living apart for at least five years, either party may issue divorce proceedings without the other’s consent). A legal separation allows a couple to live apart without divorcing and, importantly, there is no need to prove that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. A legal separation is an

option if there are religious reasons against divorce or the couple have been married less than a year. Separation is also a sensible option if the couple want time and space to work out if they really want to end the marriage There are, however, a number of longer-term issues that need to be kept in mind. For example, after a legal separation, both parties have the right to live in the house they share. Even if one person moves out, they are within their rights to return. Their partner is not allowed to change the locks – the only way to stop this is to obtain an injunction. Separated couples’ finances remain linked, so, for example, they will continue to be jointly responsible for a mortgage and will both be at risk if one party moves out and stops paying their share. In the event their spouse dies, a legally separated person still has the right to claim against the estate. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead, E11 2PU. Listen and learn In the 17th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to award-winning oboist Stephanie Oatridge, who will perform at Wanstead Library this month

O

ne of the tenets of the Redbridge Music Society is to inform the local public on current musical matters as well as to provide live recitals. This month, in the Churchill Room at Wanstead Library, Stephanie Oatridge will give an illustrated lecture-recital describing the research she is currently undertaking at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and performing on modern and baroque oboes. Stephanie is an early music specialist and studied baroque oboe at the University of Birmingham with Tony Robson. After graduating, she continued her studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire, receiving firstclass honours for a second Bachelor’s degree, and a Master’s degree with distinction. She followed this with a postgraduate diploma (distinction) at the Royal Academy of Music, winning the RAM Friends’ Development Award. Whilst at Birmingham, she won the Antony Miller Oboe Prize and spent two years on the prestigious City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Training Scheme. Stephanie has appeared in many television and radio broadcasts and has performed at major concert platforms across Europe, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican, Birmingham Symphony Hall and Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg. She has worked with eminent conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Paul Daniel and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and with distinguished soloists such as trumpeter Alison Balsom, Rolando Villazón, Joyce DiDonato and Emma Kirkby. Stephanie enjoys a busy and varied freelance career playing both modern and period instruments. She plays much chamber music and together with guitarist Adam Brown, the duo give recitals which dismantle the

boundaries between classical and popular traditions, performing works from the Iberian and Latin-American musical narrative. Stephanie has been awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of her extensive contribution to the profession. Stephanie is currently undertaking work for a PhD at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. This month, she will present her own musical journey, using the concept of autoethnography and will demonstrate how experience and research can provide an interactive and illuminating immersion into the life and inspirations of a performing artist. Stephanie will demonstrate how a multitude of inspirations can influence a musical performance. This should be a particularly fascinating and instructive evening of new ideas and instrumental performance. Stephanie will perform at Wanstead Library on 21 May from 8pm (tickets on the door: £10; members: £7). For more information, call 07948 500 736 or visit wavidi.co/rms. Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

Ghosts in the machine As part of the Dying Matters Festival at Wanstead Library, psychologist Dr Elaine Kasket will be discussing her book All the Ghosts in the Machine, which embarks on a tour through the valley of digital death

When you sit down to write a book, you never know where the creative process will lead you. Novels are that way, I’ve heard, and the same proves true for non-fiction. For example, when I began writing my book about death in the digital age, I never expected to kick off with a story that – at first glance – has nothing to do with modern technology. My grandparents lived and died before the internet was invented. On the other hand, it was an obvious place to begin. The story of my mother and those letters is about identity, connection, memory, control, ownership, privacy and the highly personal experience of grief and loss. What do all of those themes have in common? They all have as much to do with life as they do with death, and they are all deeply affected and challenged by the digital age. I also thought that, as a psychologist, I’d be writing this book primarily about how the online context affects the psychological and emotional experience of loss. In the end, it turned out to be about far more. I covered the psychology angle, sketching the emerging topography of grief in the digital age. But I also found myself employing death as a lens, peering through it at the thorny dilemmas

N

ot long after my grandfather’s death, my mother made a discovery. In a box at the bottom of a closet, she unearthed a voluminous World War Two correspondence between her parents. This archive was fascinating, intimate and, at times, breathtakingly romantic. It had never been intended for others’ eyes, but my mother read every word. In doing so, her understanding of my grandparents was transformed, in a deeply positive and healing way, and she thought these artefacts would do the same thing for everyone else in the family. She was wrong.

of life in the digital age. For example, if you want to deeply understand just how strong Big Tech’s hold on you might be, undertake a careful study of what currently happens to your data when you die. Who writes the rules, guards the gate and decides what happens to the digital dust you leave behind? When you learn the answers, you’ll very quickly get the picture, and it may shock you. For Dying Matters Festival 2019, I’m thrilled to be discussing All the Ghosts in the Machine: Illusions of Immortality in the Digital Age at Wanstead Library, in the company of my friend and colleague Dr Stacey Pitsillides. I’ll be sharing some of the key insights from my book, answering questions and hearing others’ experiences. I’ll also be offering some general principles and suggestions I hope will help people create more meaningful lives and legacies, both online and off. Elaine will be discussing her book at Wanstead Library on 16 May from 7pm to 9pm (tickets: 3). Visit wavidi.co/kasket. As we're compelled to capture, store and share more and more of our personal information, there's something we often forget. All that data doesn't just disappear when our physical bodies shuffle off this mortal coil. Digital afterlives are a natural consequence of the information age, a reality that barely anyone has prepared for - and that 'anyone' probably includes you. In All the Ghosts in the Machine, psychologist Elaine Kasket weaves together personal true stories and scientific research taking you on a fascinating tour through the valley of digital death, in the process, transforming how you think about your life and your legacy. Elaine will be in conversation with Dr Stacey Pitsillides, whose own research considers how technology and design shift our understanding of death and bereavement. Book signing will follow.

74 River Roding flooding at the Charlie Brown’s Roundabout in January 2001. Photo kindly supplied by the Woodford & Wanstead Photographic Society

Floating IDEAS Rising at Molehill Green in Essex, the River Roding passes through the Wanstead and Woodford area en route to the Thames, bringing with it a very real flood risk to local homes. In the third of a series of articles charting the River Roding Project – which aims to reduce that risk – Andy Naish from the Environment Agency offers advice on how we can all help each other to be prepared for flooding

May 2019

B

eing prepared in an emergency can help to reduce stress, panic and avoid loss of life. Understanding the risk of flooding and preparing for it now will help save lives and minimise the damage and distress flooding can cause. By planning in advance, you will not only be better prepared to respond in an emergency but better equipped to recover in the long term.

Working together as a community or group is an effective way of responding to a flood. Establishing a flood action group (FLAG) brings the local community together to talk about local flooding issues and helps to form a proactive group of residents who can help each other during a flood emergency. A community flood plan is a great way to coordinate response by helping you decide what practical actions to take to help each other before, during and after a flood. This could include identifying vulnerable people and property and who can help others move furniture or other valuable possessions. Some people may have useful resources for protecting property or equipment that can help with the clean-up afterwards. A community flood plan brings the community together to think about local flooding issues and helps to identify things such as: zz Places at risk – which homes are likely to flood first and which roads are most likely to flood? zz Actions to take before, during and after a flooding event. zz Available resources and volunteers – who is able to help locally? Where can you access support and additional help? zz Actions agreed with authorities. zz Vulnerable people and places. There are multiple organisations involved in responding during and after a flood, such as local authorities and emergency services, so

Agency – Com

munity Flood

We encourage a range of people to get involved with planning to ensure the plan fits the diverse range of people who live in the community. It doesn't matter if you’re at work, retired, need additional mobility help or just generally have time to help, it’s good to get involved. Even if you don’t live in a flood risk area, your input could be valuable in helping others respond without the worry that your own property is in danger. We have a flood plan template, which is a good rough guide to keep things simple, but it should be developed to suit your community needs. If you’d like to find out more information about volunteering in your community or flood planning, please contact your local flood resilience team at the Environment Agency. Heart of the matter London Hearts is a charity placing defibrillators in communities across the country. Kimberley Lloyd encourages Wanstead businesses and venues to apply for a life-saving device of their own

T

he biggest killer in the UK is not smoking, alcohol abuse or even road traffic accidents; it’s cardiac arrest, an electrical malfunction of the heart that results in over 100,000 deaths each year.

The GoodSAM app shows the location of defibrillators

When a cardiac arrest occurs, time is of the essence. The patient needs to be stabilised and kept alive until the ambulance arrives. Unfortunately, the stats are not in the patient’s favour, as for each minute lost after arrest there is a 10% loss of life expectancy, and as the average UK ambulance arrival time is eight to 10 minutes – well, you do the maths! The availability and usage of a public access defibrillator means the chance of survival from cardiac arrest increases from 6% to an amazing 74%. You never really want to be more than 100 metres from a defibrillator. London Hearts is a charity committed to providing individuals and communities all over England with life-saving defibrillators to protect as many people as possible. The charity deals with the procurement and supply of the defibrillators and supporting equipment, as well as incidentals, including problem-solving and free CPR and awareness training, which is often the hidden cost providing a financial sting in the tail when a defibrillator is sourced via the retail market. Not all defibrillators are the same, of course, as there are lots on the market. It is important to ensure that the one chosen is fit for purpose and also quickly accessible and usable, whether it be an adult or child who needs attention. In reality, anyone can use a defibrillator – it is simply a matter of confidence. Any training is a matter of familiarisation. The defibrillator

is so advanced that it literally talks the user through the procedure. Be assured, it is impossible to deliver a shock to a patient not in cardiac arrest, so there is no question of making the patient any worse or incurring any liability. You can find out where your nearest defibrillator in Wanstead is by downloading the GoodSAM app and typing in your postcode. Where possible, we recommend that all defibrillators are public access and encourage all businesses, schools and sports clubs to have one in their facilities. You can apply for a defibrillator on our website and we are offering a £500 grant towards all applications from the Wanstead area. For more information on London Hearts and to apply for a defibrillator, visit londonhearts.org. To download the GoodSAM app, visit goodsamapp.org
