Welcome...

2019

This publication is no stranger to art. Quite the contrary, in fact. As diamonds are to girls, striking, two-dimensional creations by local residents are a community magazine editor’s best friend, providing visually appealing – and geographically relevant – content. It’s little wonder, therefore, that artists account for a significant number of article bylines in the history of the Wanstead Village Directory, which thrives on its communitycontributed content. Each of those bylines represents a different set of inspirations, a different display of ideas and a different portfolio of talent. As the blank canvas of 2019 awaits the brushstrokes of a colourful year ahead (a colour palette that includes the women’s football World Cup, the men’s cricket and rugby World Cups and, of course, that small issue of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union), local artists are contemplating their entries for what will be the area’s 10th annual art trail. And just as our High Street’s shops and surrounding community venues will enthusiastically hand over their window and wall space to the artistry of our neighbours, we too stand by with pages waiting to be filled by more of our two-dimensional friends. Aristotle said the aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things but their inward significance. And perhaps that applies not just to art but to the art trail phenomenon itself. There is an obvious, outward beauty as creations of two, three and four dimensions take pride of place in a place filled with pride, but as Aristotle suggests, there is also a greater, inner significance, one that permeates the entire community. And whether life imitates art or art imitates life, this publication for one is happy to imitate that very community. Lee Marquis, Editor

Time for inspiration: theme announced for Art Trail Wanstead 2019 Art Trail Wanstead’s 2019 theme has been announced, giving artists nine months to prepare for the event’s 10th-anniversary display. Chosen by Art Group Wanstead – which runs the 16-day community display every September – the theme will be ‘Time’. “The theme can be interpreted widely – the more varied, the better,” says trail founder Donna Mizzi. “This year is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, so time and space may appeal to some artists. Even Dr Who, a time lord, may spark ideas.” Following the success of last year’s art postcard display, members

Unlawful encampments

Apply to play in the streets

Following a string of illegal encampments in the borough last year, Redbridge Council has secured legal powers banning such activity. The High Court injunction, initially in place for three years, stops illegal camps at 240 sites, including parks, open spaces and school grounds. The council was also awarded costs of £112,000. The council dealt with 52 unlawful sites – costing around £350,000 to clean up – in the two-year runup to the injunction.

A pilot project which opened up streets to allow children to play outside and make new friends is being rolled out across the borough. Play Streets is residentled, with support from Redbridge Council who organise the temporary road closures. The next round of applications for the project closes on 1 February, for road closures in March, April or May. For road closures over the summer, the deadline is 1 May. Visit wavidi.co/playst

Be a part of a spellbinding story at Wanstead Library

This month, local historians Mark Gorman and Peter Williams will be discussing the archaeological finds made on Wanstead Flats following the July 2018 fire. “The fire stripped a large area of vegetation… Also, to help the firefighters damp down, the City of London brought in a farm implement to open up the topsoil. The effect was to uncover some World War Two archaeology,” said Peter. The presentation will take place in Wanstead Park’s Temple on 27 January from 1pm (£3; booking required). Email pows.wanstead@gmail.com

A touring, professional storytelling company will be entertaining children at Wanstead Library this month. “Who’s in the story? Where does it happen? Come and be a part of the story, you can decide!” said Gary Potter from Wizard Stories, the London Borough of Redbridge’s resident storytellers. The event – which will take place on 26 January from 2pm to 3pm (free) – is suitable for five- to 11-year-olds. “We believe the power of stories can release creativity and fire the imagination within every child.” Call 020 8708 7400

Service to improve at Wanstead Hospital’s blood testing centre

Valentines Mansion artist to demonstrate portrait painting

As of this month, there will be three phlebotomists on site at all times in Wanstead Hospital’s blood testing centre. It follows concerns over waiting times expressed by patient representatives at a recent meeting of Redbridge Council’s Health Scrutiny Committee. “It is very important that they [NHS] have taken patient concerns on board and I look forward to seeing a smoother service for local residents in need of blood tests in the future,” said Wanstead Village councillor Daniel Morgan-Thomas.

Essex Art Club will be hosting a demonstration on portrait painting at Wanstead House this month. “Over the years, I have used friends and family as models… I love capturing not just someone’s physical likeness, but also something of their character, personality and spirit,” said Jason Rose, who began as a child by drawing portraits of customers in his father’s hairdressing salon and now has a studio in Valentines Mansion. The demonstration will take place on 27 January from 2.30pm (visitors: £5). Visit wavidi.co/eac

Completion of safety improvements at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout

Pedestrians and cyclists can now negotiate Charlie Brown’s Roundabout more safely following the completion last month of major improvement works at the busy junction. “The newly built signalised pedestrian and cycle crossings and wider pavements will make walking and cycling in the area safer and easier,” said a spokesperson for TfL, which originally gave the go-ahead for the project at the end of 2017 following a public consultation, with the work beginning last July.

Redbridge Council has launched a consultation on plans to overhaul the borough’s children’s centres. The council currently operates eight main children’s centre hubs and a network of 13 satellite centres. Converting the Aldersbrook hub into a satellite centre and charging for some of the activities are among the options being considered. “Government cuts have already led most local authorities to reduce provision or close children’s centres altogether,” said a spokesperson. Council seek residents’ views on waste and recycling

Co-op shoppers encouraged to support high school PTA book fund

Wanstead High School's library underwent a £40k refurbishment last summer

Redbridge Council has launched a survey seeking local views on how to cut waste and increase recycling in the borough, which is currently one of the lowest recycling performers in London. “Residents can talk about the barriers preventing them from doing more… For example, would you be interested in facilities to recycle food waste? What’s stopping you from recycling more? How best can we communicate with you about our services?” said a spokesperson. The survey runs until 6 January. Visit wavidi.co/rcy

Wanstead High School PTA has been chosen for Co-op's community funding initiative for 2019, to raise money for books to restock the school’s newly refurbished library. "At the last count, the library contained over 19,000 muchloved fiction, non-fiction and reference books, some of which need updating," said a PTA spokesperson. "You can support the school by electing the PTA as your chosen charity, which means 1% of the amount spent on Co-op branded products and services will go to the school." Visit wavidi.co/coopfund

In the 10th of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multi-garden nature reserve – Susie Knox suggests ways to fill your garden with wildlife throughout 2019, starting with feeding the birds in January

A

t the end of last year, a huge reader survey was published in the Daily Mail which showed the enormous value of wildlife-friendly areas in your garden. Based on data from 18,000 people, the survey found that the number of nature-friendly features in gardens had a direct impact on the number of different creatures that lived there or visited – overwhelming evidence that small changes in gardens really do make a big difference. But you don’t have to do it all at once. January: feed the birds This is the coldest month in London, averaging 5ºC, which is particularly tough on the smallest birds who have to feed all day and consume as much as 30% of their body weight to get through the long, cold nights. February: put up a nest box Mature trees and thick hedges provide the best nest sites, but there just aren’t enough around, leaving many birds out in the cold. Nest boxes can help. There are different designs suited to different birds. March: plant wildflower seeds Wildflowers are so important for pollinating insects that scientists are now studying

whether small areas of them in fields will address the annihilation of wildlife caused by intensive farming. It’s easy to get in on the action in your garden. Just sprinkle a wildflower seed mix onto roughened soil in a pot or gaps in flowerbeds and gently press in. Cut back and remove the old stems in September. April: feed hedgehogs If you’re lucky enough to have these rare creatures in your garden, you can help fatten them up in April so they’re in peak condition for breeding. Leave out water and meat-based dog or cat food (ideally chicken flavour). May: go no-mow Time to get the mower out, groan. So, don’t bother! Long grass is a fantastic wildlife habitat and will naturalise with wildflowers too. Why not give up a corner (or more) of your lawn and just mow once a year in late summer (removing the cuttings)? June: plant pollinator-friendly bedding It’s the time of year when lots of people enjoy planting colourful summer bedding plants in borders and containers – so pick ones loved by the all-important bees. Avoid

QWERTYSDFGVCAZXPLK

January 2019

pelargoniums, which are the flower least liked by pollinators. Instead, try alyssum, cosmos, lantana, snapdragons or verbena. July: build a log pile This is the month when baby creatures, including frogs, toads and hedgehogs, begin to emerge. They need food and shelter, and a log pile provides both. Just half-bury a few logs and let plants scramble over them. August: install a water feature Hot, dry weather is tough for birds and insects. Even a mini pond or water feature in your garden will help wildlife. If that’s not suitable for your situation, a dish of water filled with pebbles can provide a drinking trough for creatures. September: leave seed heads intact Many plants have attractive seedheads that are also beneficial to wildlife. Let one border age gracefully to provide food for birds and shelter for insects and other creatures.

October: plant bulbs This is the best time of year to plant bulbs, some of which provide early food for bees in spring. Great options for pollinators include crocuses, snowdrops, alliums, grape hyacinths and snakes-head fritillary. November: let leaves pile up out of sight Most of the leaves are off the trees now, providing an essential habitat for mini-beasts through winter. Rather than clearing them all away, leave a few piles tucked out of sight around the garden. December: plant a tree The UK desperately needs more trees – not just for wildlife but to mop up carbon and air pollution too. December is a good time of year to plant trees, and you can even buy bare root plants, which are much cheaper than those in pots. Wildlife-friendly trees for smaller gardens include holly, hawthorn, ornamental cherry, crab apple and fruit trees. For more information on the Wild Wanstead project, including 10 ‘wild ways’ to make your garden more welcoming to wildlife, visit wildwanstead.org

2019 checklist The Wanstead Society works to protect and improve Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook. Here, Scott Wilding outlines the group's aims for the year ahead

F

resh into the new year and the Wanstead Society has been asking its members what we can do to make where we live a better place in 2019. The message we got from our AGM was clear; to campaign for three basic things: cleaner and greener streets, better health care services and more policing in Wanstead. The Wanstead Society is, first and foremost, a charity, which seeks to work with those in power to protect and improve Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook. Although we have some funds – which we use to plant trees, maintain flower beds or fund litter picks – we are clearly limited in our scope. We aim to do what we can to meet our members asks. Cleaner and greener streets We continue to support and fund the Wanstead Community Gardeners who do a fantastic job in maintaining lots of individual areas with native wildflowers. Without these volunteers, our biodiversity would decline even further, and we would lose precious green space. Our aim is also to ensure the council replaces any dead, damaged or diseased street trees. These spaces may only be small but they offer vital life to bugs and bees, which in turn help support native wildlife. We have invited our local councillors to our February meeting to ask for an update on this and discuss how we can work with them to enhance green space in Wanstead. Better health care services Over the last 25 years, the population of Wanstead has increased, but our health care provision has got smaller. Wanstead Hospital has closed and we know that King George and Whipps Cross, while not in Wanstead, are vital to our health care and we aim to work with other groups to ensure their viability.

Fortunately, we have a practising nurse on our committee who is advising us on how we can lobby the NHS to improve our health care provision, and in November we met with Councillor Neil Zammett, who sits on the council's Health Scrutiny Committee, to seek ways in which we can work together to bring more NHS funding to Wanstead. More policing in Wanstead Since 2013, Wanstead has had no police station, and it is no secret that police numbers have fallen across Britain. There is very little we, as an organisation, can do to improve this, but we do attend police meetings and try to distribute the advice they give – because prevention is always better than cure. However, next year, GLA and mayoral elections will take place and we will raise this issue with those seeking office. The clear message must be, we need more police and the police need more funds. This we can do through our lobbying campaigns and by organising political hustings at election time. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation that works to protect, preserve and improve the local area. Membership is £10 per household per year. Visit wansteadsociety.org.uk

P K P Q LUNAR PLANTINGQ Wanstead Village Directory

As vice-chair of the recently formed Aldersbrook Horticultural Society, Jane Karavasili has been asked to present a talk on planting by the moon. Here, she offers some insight into her lunar experiences

O

nce in a blue moon, hunters moon, blood moon. The moon is in our vocabulary, affects the seasons, the tides, the timing of our religious festivals and, apparently, even the taste of wine. The moon is vital to our survival, yet tends to be taken for granted. An orb we are so familiar with and yet know little about. Are you, like me, living locally, and perhaps occasionally might glance on a clear evening in late summer at a gleaming harvest moon hanging spectacularly over Wanstead Flats? You think: “How lovely, why is it like that?” Then move on. Fifteen years or so ago, I was given a book about planting by the moon. As a keen gardener with allotments to maintain I had never made a connection as to how the lunar cycle may affect what was being planted. All I knew was that crops might spectacularly fail for no obvious reason or, despite care and attention, just not thrive. Out of curiosity, I gave it a try. If nothing else, the notion of putting plants divided into fruits, roots, flowers and leaf in at particular times of the month was useful for advanced planning. Over time, to much interest and pleasure, I found a higher rate of success with crop production and plants surviving even very dry summers. Of course, experienced gardeners, sceptics and scientists would say that this was just coincidence, good soil structure or correct planting, and they are correct. But the theory behind lunar planting (or biometrics) is simple enough. The level of groundwater ebbs and flows, not unlike the familiar tides of the sea. A root plant, such as a carrot, is encouraged to grow down as the level of water falls. Conversely, a fruit plant,

like a tomato, will thrive if the roots have easy access to water as it rises from below. The concept of planting by the moon has been used for thousands of years and there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence of this being a highly effective method of growing. Like much anecdotal evidence, this has yet to be definitively proved by science. However, if it was good enough for my Ancient Greek ancestors, who am I to argue? There are a number of variations to this theory and for the very keen, you can become quite an anorak! Personally, I try to keep it very simple, and when there is a big ‘X’ on the day of the month due to a partial eclipse, I have a break from the garden. While undertaking research, I have been astounded at how vital the moon is to our planet’s survival, and how little I know. I don’t pretend to be an expert, just a keen plants person who finds lunar planting useful and would love to share my findings. You may even find an answer to why the moon looks like a balloon over Wanstead Flats. Jane’s talk will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 8 January from 7.30pm (visitors: £5). HOMELESSNESS Having joined the annual count of rough sleepers in Redbridge last month, Councillor Jo Blackman (Labour, Wanstead Village) reports on the council’s work to tackle homelessness

F

or those who are lucky enough, the festive season was spent indulging with friends and family. However, it was also a time to think of others who are less fortunate, particularly rough sleepers, as the cold nights draw in. This was brought home to me last month. As my daughters were compiling their letters to Santa, I joined the annual count of rough sleepers in Redbridge and saw first-hand the desperate situation they face. The Ilford Recorder’s powerful series on homelessness shone a light on the tragedy of 10 rough sleepers who died in Ilford in the last year. Life expectancy for rough sleepers is 43 for women and 47 for men. In London, rough sleeping has doubled since 2010 and numbers in Redbridge are among the highest in the capital. Rough sleepers often fall through the gaps of housing support. Around 80% of those in The Salvation Army winter shelter in Ilford have no recourse to public funds due to their immigration status. Many rough sleepers have issues with mental and physical health and substance misuse, and face a lack of accommodation from emergency hostels. Council leader Jas Athwal pledged he wanted no one to sleep rough in the borough over Christmas. A second shelter with 32 beds is due to have been opened by the time this publication goes to print, in addition to the 28-bed winter shelter run by The Salvation Army in Ilford, and a new hostel, Project Malachi, is due to open in summer 2019. Redbridge Together crowdfunder has been established to support these efforts and raise funds for The Salvation Army and The Welcome Centre to support rough sleepers. I hope that Wanstead residents will consider

supporting this initiative, which is going to make a tangible difference. Rough sleeping is the most visible form of homelessness. But the number of homeless is far higher than the number of rough sleepers, as they refer to people who have no secure or suitable accommodation – of which there are estimated to be over 7,000 in Redbridge. Eviction from the private rented sector is now the largest single cause of homelessness in Redbridge – with high costs and benefits reforms key factors. A consultation is currently underway on the council’s homelessness strategy, which will help deliver the aim of zero rough sleeping. This will build on the progress already made, including the delivery of the council’s pledge in 2018 that no families with children would be in bed and breakfast beyond six weeks. Working with the voluntary sector, Mayor of London and government, we are determined to make a difference on homelessness. The council consultation runs until 22 February – visit wavidi.co/homeless To donate to Redbridge Together, visit wavidi.co/redbridgetogether

T

he River Roding has a long history of flooding. Flood events have been recorded since 1926, occurring in 1939, 1947, 1974, 1988, 1993, 2000 and 2007. In 2000, over 400 properties flooded in Woodford. Charlie Brown’s Roundabout was shut for over a week, impacting access to schools and supermarkets. Broadmead Baptist Church on Chigwell Road was out of use for 18 months. Do you remember the floods? We would like to hear from residents who have been impacted. There are currently over 1,500 properties with a ‘high’ chance of flooding within the River Roding catchment between Stansted and the River Thames. In the next few editions of the Wanstead Village Directory, we will be telling you different ways you can prepare for flooding. First up, you can check the government website to find out if your property is at risk and where it may flood in your local area. If your home is at risk, you can then register to receive free flood warnings, which come in three levels of severity: Flood alert, which means you should be prepared by organising a bag of items you must have if you need to leave your home, such as medicines, insurance documents, warm and waterproof clothing, phone charger and torch. Flood warning, which means you need to act: turn off gas and electricity supplies, move things upstairs and take family to safety. Severe flood warning, which means you need to take survival steps and contact the emergency services if you are in immediate danger. The Environment Agency are working with Redbridge Council to reduce the flooding risk to homes and businesses in the local area from the River Roding. We have

identified options to achieve this but we can’t do this without additional support. We estimate the project will cost approximately £14m. So far, we have secured nearly £10m from central government, the council and other sources. However, the project will not progress unless we can find the additional £4m. If it goes ahead, the River Roding Project will reduce flooding to over 600 homes, local businesses, the M11 and Charlie Brown’s Roundabout. We will be engaging with communities and local groups throughout the catchment to keep them informed. In summary, we want to: zz create a better place for people and wildlife that is more resilient to the impacts of flooding and climate change. zz work with communities and our partners to help us deliver a jointly funded project. zz improve our understanding of flooding in the River Roding catchment. zz work with local communities to improve their understanding of flooding and how they can be better prepared. How you can help us: zz champion the project locally and help identify sources of funding. zz tell us how you have been impacted by River Roding flooding and tell us your local environmental knowledge. To find out if your property is a flood risk, visit wavidi.co/checkflood To register for flood warnings, visit wavidi.co/floodwarn For more information on the River Roding Project, visit wavidi.co/rrp or call 0370 850 6506

Rising at Molehill Green in Essex, the River Roding passes through the Wanstead and Woodford area en route to the Thames, bringing with it a very real flood risk to local homes. In the first of a series of articles charting the ideas and hopes of the River Roding Project – which aims to reduce that risk – Laura Hepworth from the Environment Agency is keen to seek community support for the project. WANDERERS’ HOME History and football enthusiast Davis Watson tells the story of one of London’s most influential – yet least recognised – football clubs: Wanderers FC, which was formed 160 years ago in Snaresbrook

E

ast London has given a lot to football over the years: West Ham United supplied three of England’s World Cup winning team in 1966 and the professional club closest to Wanstead, Leyton Orient, nurtured a young Laurie Cunningham, who helped pave the way for professional black footballers. The latter were also instrumental in the formation of the Footballers’ Battalion during WWI – three Orientals lost their lives during the Somme. However, the story of one of east London’s most influential clubs does not get a lot of recognition in the history books and their story is very close to home. In 1859, Foresters FC were founded and took their name from Forest School – several former students played for the team. The only games the team played in the early years were among themselves and these were played in the Snaresbrook area of Epping Forest. Some games were also played on the grounds of the Infant Orphan Asylum (now Snaresbrook Crown Court). The year 1863 brought the club’s first ever competitive match, which was against Crystal Palace (nothing to do with the modern-day club). Then, in the following year, they changed their name to Wanderers FC, due to the fact they had no permanent home ground and ‘wandered’ from place to place. During the 1864/65 season, the club operated two teams, one under the name of Wanderers and a reserve-like team that kept the name Foresters FC, but that idea soon ended and only the first team was kept in place. It was at that time Wanderers FC began to play in west London, at grounds in Battersea and Middlesex. In 1869, the Kennington Oval (known as The Oval, which is most famous for cricket) became their permanent home.

A photo of the team taken in 1863

They also have the honour of being the first ever FA Cup winners after winning in 1872 and then again in 1873. Two quarter-final losses followed, but the team regained their flair and won the tournament in 1876, 1877 and 1878 – considering they last competed in the cup in 1882, it is a very interesting statistic that they are joint ninth for the most ever FA Cup wins alongside Manchester City, Everton and West Brom. A great part of football history ended when the team dissolved in 1887. In 2009, a new Wanderers FC was formed and they entered a Counties League in 2011, so their legacy lives on. In May 2010, the team recreated the first ever FA Cup final when they played Royal Engineers at The Oval, unfortunately losing 7–1. So, the legacy of the first ever FA Cup winners, who also assisted in forming the Football Association, still lives on in 2019 – and to think, they came from just down the road. Charity begins… Wanstead’s newest charity boutique is keen to hear from residents who would like to support the work of Saint Francis Hospice by volunteering. Michelle Nicholls, the hospice’s director of retail, reports

T

here’s a new boutique along the High Street, where you’ll discover high-quality clothes, accessories and household items at the very best prices. What’s more, every purchase will help us to provide our specialist, end-of-life care services to people affected by lifelimiting illnesses, including cancer, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s and heart and lung disease. This is our 15th retail store – the third in Redbridge – and it has been thriving since it started trading at the start of November, with local residents curious to see what it has to offer and leaving with exciting purchases and change in their pockets. It’s no secret that retail is facing tough times, but our stores remain strong and robust plans are in place to ensure they continue to be so. Our latest store is in the heart of Redbridge and we’re very excited to have the opportunity to serve Wanstead. Wanstead brings a different look to our stores – it has a very boutique feel and we’re really looking forward to integrating ourselves into Wanstead and village life. Our retail outlets are a vital source of income as they achieve an annual turnover of £2.4m from donations. But what’s also important is that our stores help us raise awareness of the wide-ranging services we provide at the hospice and in the community. Saint Francis Hospice employs 150 nurses, doctors and specialist health care staff who are supported by 750 volunteers. Together, they provide care and help to more than 4,000 people across the boroughs of Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, Brentwood and west Essex.

Volunteer by a clothes rail

The Mayor of Redbridge, Councillor Debbie Kaur-Thiara, formally opened the store at the end of November, and among the dignitaries who attended were two families who’ve become huge supporters since their loved ones were under our care. Councillor Kaur-Thiara spent time chatting with store manager Rosel Tonelli and her team of friendly volunteers and she spoke about her personal connection with the hospice: “I visited my dear friend when she spent the last weeks of her life at the hospice in Havering-atteBower and I was so amazed at how beautiful and peaceful it was. Earlier this year, I took a tour of the hospice and spoke with staff and found out about all the services the charity provides. Death affects everyone at some time in their lives and we need to do more to ensure Redbridge residents are aware of the wonderful services that are available to them.” If you would like to get involved, we are always on the lookout for volunteers who have four or more hours to spare. The Saint Francis Hospice charity shop is located at 56–58 High Street, Wanstead. For more information on volunteering or donating, call 01708 376 269 or email retailheadoffice@sfh.org.uk

The show goes on Having launched over a century ago, the Stratford and East London Music Festival is now a regular fixture in the local area, giving performers of all ages the chance to compete. Lisa Sharp reports

T

he Stratford and East London Music Festival (SELMF) offers the ideal opportunity for performers of any age and of all abilities to perform and compete in one of the many music and speech and drama classes. The event was founded in 1882 by John Spencer Curwen, making it the UK’s oldest music and drama festival – now in its 136th year. With over 70 singing classes alone, there’s sure to be one that appeals – from classical, musical theatre, jazz, a class to perform a song that you have written yourself, popular music to recitals. There are also more than 50 speech and drama classes to choose from for individuals, duets and groups in classes for poetry, acting, storytelling and comedy. There are hundreds of classes to compete in, broken down into nine categories: choral singing, orchestra and bands; concerto; instrumental classes; millennium competition; piano; recorders; solo and ensemble singing; singing; and speech and drama. There is also a young musician of the year award, made up of 10 young musicians – pianists, vocalists and instrumentalists – aged 11 to 17 years who have been chosen on the basis of their performance during the event. It is held on the last night of the festival and is always a showcase for talent. Back in 1882, the entry fee for the first festival was 2s 6d (12p) for solo performers, 5s 0d (25p) for quartets and 10s 0d (50p) for choirs. Originally, it was only open to those who lived in Stratford, Leyton, Wanstead, Walthamstow, Woodford, Plaistow, Forest Gate, Canning Town, Victoria Docks and Leytonstone. Now, musicians and actors come to the festival from the local area and beyond to perform and compete in a friendly

A performer in last year’s Stratford and East London Music Festival

and supportive environment. As well as enjoying the excitement of competing at the festival, all entrants receive feedback and tips from experienced adjudicators, as well as winning a range of awards, from collectable certificates to button badges, medals and cash prizes. SELMF is a charitable organisation and exists because of our brilliant team of dedicated volunteers. And we would appreciate any additional help you may be able to offer, either with your time or with donations to help towards our running costs. Becoming a Friend of the Festival for just £10 gives you free entry to all the competitions, plus a free programme. Or if you fancy donating a silver trophy for aspiring performers, we would love to hear from you. The Stratford and East London Music Festival 2019 will take place on 11 and 12 February at St Mary’s Church in South Woodford (choirs, orchestras and bands) and from 18 to 23 February at Forest School in Snaresbrook (all other music, speech and drama classes). The closing date for entries is 13 January. For more information, visit stratfordmusicfestival.org.uk

THE 100 CLUB This year, Haven House launches The 100 Club, which will see 100 local businesses pledge to raise £1,000 each for the children’s hospice. Haven House community fundraising executive Amy Bramble reports

T

he 100 Club will be a community of like-minded local organisations working together to inspire, support and encourage each other in their businesses, while pledging to achieve an annual fundraising goal of £1,000 each for Haven House Children’s Hospice. We have put this initiative together in recognition of the valuable support local businesses have been offering since the hospice opened its doors 15 years ago. As coordinator of the club, I am hoping to have 100 businesses signed up in time for the official launch in March. If we can confirm 100 members by then, there’s a fantastic chance that by April 2020, the club will reach its collective target of raising £100,000. This will be a substantial contribution to our hospice and will be something every member of the group will be able to be proud of. Members of The 100 Club will receive a variety of benefits, including logo and link to their website on our 100 Club web page, monthly newsletters, regular networking events, publicity and press opportunities. They will also receive plenty of fundraising support to help them reach their target. There are many ways businesses can raise money for us, such as dress-down Fridays, cake sales, coffee mornings and much more. Members will be provided with buckets, banners and balloons to display in their workplace. Payroll-giving is also a great way to fundraise and is a scheme that allows employees to make donations from as little as £1 a week to Haven House before any tax is deducted from their salary, so the donation is, effectively, tax-free. And do check if your employer match-funds donations or offers volunteering hours.

Haven House provides support to life-limited children and their families, including planned respite and end-of-life care, as well as services to improve emotional and physical wellbeing

Each business will also receive The 100 Club logo to display on their business premises and promotional material, demonstrating their commitment to supporting their local children’s hospice. Companies have been signing up for The 100 Club at a rapid rate. However, there are still places left for any who would like to get involved before the launch. We are welcoming local businesses of all sizes into The 100 Club, so even if you don’t work locally, perhaps you know someone else who might be interested in joining us. You can also help The 100 Club and its members by simply looking out for the logo and supporting their fundraising events and activities in your local community. For more information on The 100 Club, email amybramble@havenhouse.org.uk or call 07557 036 054 Haven House Children’s Hospice is located at The White House, High Road, Woodford Green, IG8 9LB. In the third of a series of articles looking at the history of Wanstead Park, its current state and the developing plans for restoring this important green space, Richard Arnopp from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands looks at the secrets revealed by the recent low water levels in the park’s largest lake

I

n recent years, the Ornamental Water – the largest of Wanstead Park’s five lakes at 6.3 hectares – has suffered from low water levels. A variety of factors have contributed to this, some of which are still not fully understood. The City of London is commissioning an engineering assessment to follow up earlier studies on the lakes but, in the meantime, some interesting relics of the park’s history have come to light as a result of the exposed lake bed. The Ornamental Water runs for about one kilometre from roughly north-west to southeast. The northern section includes several islands, namely Lincoln Island, Rook Island, a group known as The Fortification and Engine House Island. The Ornamental Water was constructed by elaborating and extending elements which already existed by around 1710. The western arm of the present lake follows the southern section of a garden canal depicted on a view to the east of about that date, while the eastern arm seems to be based on the natural course of the River Roding. The same view shows the Straight Canal as a separate lake offering a vista of water from the hill on which Wanstead House stood. We aren’t sure when the present water body was completed, but the entire lake system is shown in recognisable form on Roque’s 1745–1746 Environs of London map, so we must assume it was before that. Late in 2017, Epping Forest operation’s manager Geoff Sinclair informed the Friends that brickwork had been revealed in various places by low water levels, and he offered to take a group from the Friends to view it. Previously unrecorded was a culvert discovered on the western side of Rook Island.

January 2019

RESTORING Wanstead Park

This was constructed using pre-industrial handmade bricks and seemed to make most sense as a relic of water management within the park, dating from before the existing lake was completed. A similar structure has been found on the golf course. We also looked at the abutments from a vanished bridge linking Lincoln and Rook islands. This was known but had never been studied or described. Old estate plans suggest that bridges in Wanstead Park came and went, but one at this location potentially offers a clue to the sequencing and dating of developments in the gardens. Given that it would have interrupted the vista between the Great Amphitheatre and The Fortification, it might suggest that one or both of these features had gone out of use by the time of its construction. That in turn might be linked to another change in the eastern part of the park, namely the expansion of the wooded areas to the islands of the Ornamental Water and its eastern margins. Long known was a bridge adjacent to the Grotto, the footings of which were also revealed by the dry conditions. This was shown on an early John Doyley plan dated 1813. Later Doyley plans – of which there are several – show no bridges at all. Also in 1813, Humphry Repton described the islands in the Ornamental Water as being “beautifully cloathed” with trees. Could the islands have been planted by the second earl (1750–1784) and linked by bridges to provide more picturesque and interesting circuits of the gardens? Listen and learn In the 13th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of Redbridge Music Society and Redbridge Music Service, whose students will perform at Christ Church this month

O

ne of the essential aims of Redbridge Music Society is to promote upand-coming young musicians, especially those residing within Redbridge, by providing them with a performance platform in front of a supportive and appreciative audience. Another important aim is to bring a diverse range of musical styles and genres to the people of the borough at easily accessible venues. Both aims will be realised when the students of Redbridge Music Service put on a recital at Christ Church, Wanstead this month. Redbridge Music Service is the shining gem in Redbridge’s musical crown. It is based at the John Savage Centre, Hainault, and is a lead partner within the North East London Music Education Hub (NELMEH). Over the many years of its existence, Redbridge Music Service has nurtured many talented young musicians, a large number of whom have gone on to become professional musicians. Currently, music has the status of being a statutory subject and is an entitlement for pupils up to the age of 14 in schools that follow the national curriculum. Pupils should have access to both live and recorded music, and Redbridge Music Service, via a programme of recitals, ensures pupils have first-hand experiences of music through live performances. The service provides a number of instrumental festivals, including separate festivals for brass, string, woodwind, recorder, piano, guitar and singing. The purpose of these festivals is to provide pupils with the opportunity to rehearse and perform together at an accessible, central venue. Learning a musical instrument can significantly develop qualities, such as self-confidence, imagination and creativity,

Redbridge Music Service students

memory and coordination skills and communication, team and social skills – skills which also greatly benefit other areas in the school curriculum. To this end, Redbridge Music Service provides a wide range of instrumental and vocal tuition in schools throughout the borough. Instruments can be hired from the service’s instrument centre. The music school encourages its students to explore music from a wide range of historical periods, genres and traditions. This will be especially in evidence at the forthcoming recital at Christ Church, when the students will perform an eclectic mix of music and musical styles. Their recitals are always popular and well-attended events and are now a standard annual feature in Redbridge Music Society’s calendar. Please come along and support our exceptional, home-grown talent! Students of Redbridge Music Service will perform at Christ Church, Wanstead on 22 January from 8pm (tickets on the door: £7; students: free). For more information, call 07948 500 736 or visit wavidi.co/rms. Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

Coach & Horses Local resident Tracey Adebowale-Jones, who has a passion for bringing about positive change to people’s lives, talks about coaching people and co-coaching with horses

“A

nything that is appropriate in the moment to help a person move from A to B is coaching.” J Blakey and I Day in Challenging Coaching (2012). Coaching can be considered to be a conversation between two people, a coach and a coachee, structured in such a way as to move people outside of their comfort zone and towards their goal; structured through the use of models, language and approach. It is a learning tool designed to enable individuals to improve a situation identified by themselves and for which they need support to change. Coaching is a process through which we can find the solution to the questions we sometimes do not even know we are going to ask! “By engaging with a coach, we can begin to focus on what is really important to us and begin to shape what we need to do to align with that,” said Julie Starr in The Coaching Manual. The word coaching literally means to transport someone from one place to another. We coach each other informally when we talk about our lives to our friends and family but the formal coach differs from these everyday interactions in that the models used create a space in which challenges can be made that are more goal orientated than simply the mutual sharing of daily thoughts. Coaching can be offered as a short-term result focused intervention; it can focus on career goals, relationship goals, attitudes and behaviours as well as spiritual, health and wellbeing development. Alongside this, coaching is used for managing stress and anxiety, dealing with anger and becoming more assertive.

The process of coaching allows individuals, couples and groups to move towards a goal set by themselves, at a pace they set and within a relationship where they experience being truly listened to. One method of coaching is the increasingly popular co-coaching with horses, also known as equine-facilitated coaching. This adds the dimension of the horse to the traditional world of coaching, and the coaching session can be accelerated. The horse is only capable of providing honest reflections back to the coachee and provides visual feedback that shows the coachee how their psychological and physiological state may be a part of any dynamic they are trying to understand or change. Equinefacilitated coaching is a powerful catalyst for change and works with other interventions such as cognitive behavioural coaching and mindfulness. In particular, it is a valuable tool for building resilience and confidence in young people who require additional support with the management of their emotions. SALES & LADDERS Charlotte Griffiths, a conveyancing executive at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, outlines the options available to those hoping to get on – or climb – the property ladder

F

or many first-time buyers, the prospect of getting a foot on the property ladder can seem daunting. Equally, families who wish to move to a larger home may find that moving up the ladder appears beyond their reach. However, there are options open to you to make buying your dream home a reality. Help to Buy: equity loan This scheme is available to both first-time buyers and existing homeowners who wish to buy a newly built property. You can purchase a property for up to £600,000, borrowing up to 40% of the property’s value in London and 20% of the value outside of London. Until 2021, the loan will be interest-free for the first five years. After the initial five years, the interest rate will need to be paid in accordance with the relevant legislation. You will need as little as a 5% deposit and a 55% mortgage with a commercial lender to cover the remaining cost of the property. Help to Buy ISAs If you are a first-time buyer, you should look into opening a Help to Buy ISA. For every £200 you save in your ISA, the government will give you a bonus of £50. There are, however, a few things to be aware of. zz The cut-off for opening such an ISA is December 2019, although you‘ll still receive the bonus provided you buy before 2030.

zz You can only pay £200 into your account per month, with a maximum bonus of £3,000. zz You must have at least £1,600 in your ISA to claim your bonus. zz Available for properties valued up to £450,000 in London (£250,000 elsewhere).

zz The bonus cannot be put towards the exchange deposit. Although you can use the money you’ve saved towards this, you will not receive the bonus until completion. Shared Ownership Shared ownership gives first-time buyers or somebody who does not currently own a property the opportunity to buy a new build or resale property. You will need a deposit (usually 10% of the value of the share that you are purchasing) and a mortgage. The share you can purchase will be calculated by the Housing Association based upon your affordability. It is important to note that as well as paying your monthly mortgage repayments, you will also need to pay specified rent upon the share that you do not own. During your ownership, you will have the option to increase your share (this is known as staircasing). If you are considering either a help to buy or shared ownership property, it is important to seek help from a specialist solicitor who has experience of dealing with these schemes. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead, E11 2PU. For more information, call 020 8215 1000

To celebrate 100 years since the first women in the UK won the right to vote, Redbridge Museum has launched Wonder Woman, an exhibition exploring the lives of women in Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford over the past century. Museum manager Gerard Greene outlines some of the local themes of the display

A

t the turn of the 20th century, Wanstead and Woodford were slowly changing from Essex villages into suburbs of London. There was a clear class division between the professional middleclasses moving into many of the new large houses and those who lived in workingclass cottages.

© Maggie Brown, Wanstead URC

For the new residents, it was both a practical necessity and a mark of respectability to have a domestic servant to undertake the household duties. These servants were mostly young, working-class women from the East End of London or from the poorer parts of the countryside. They were supervised by the ‘lady of the house’ who was normally the wife of the man who owned the house. Elizabeth Mace-Matthews was one such lady. Born in 1860 to a middle-class family in Bow, Elizabeth was living in Grove Road, Wanstead by 1881. In Elizabeth Mace-Matthews 1888, she married Herbert Matthews, a wealthy man who worked in the shipping industry. They moved to Spratt Hall Road and later Wellesley Road, where they brought up three children. In the 1911 census they have one servant, 20-year-old Mary Lear from Canning Town. However, Elizabeth was an unusual woman, for between 1907 and 1922 she was editor and owner of The Bugle newspaper, which covered Wanstead and Woodford. There were few female newspaper editors in Britain at the time so Elizabeth’s role is remarkable. The Bugle was

an entertaining read which kept the people of Wanstead up-to-date with all the news and events happening in the village. It survived until the Mace-Matthews family left Wanstead in the early 1920s. The First World War provided women with new opportunities. While middle-class women fundraised or organised charities, others volunteered as nurses. The Woodford and Wanstead Military Hospital opened in Highams, a grand house in Woodford Green (now Woodford County High School) in November 1914. The hospital had 75 beds, an operating theatre and convalescent rooms and was staffed by volunteer nurses, many from the local area. One such was Cecilia Matthews of 36 Cowley Road, Wanstead. She was a 22-year-old insurance clerk and must have taken to nursing since she served between December 1915 and March 1919, as is recorded in her Certificate of War Service, held by Redbridge Museum. In June 1915, WH Smith advertised for a girl to work at their bookstall in George Lane, Wanstead. The Bugle newspaper approved: “It is the first time such an advertisement has appeared in this district… it will give women a chance – so often denied to them – of showing their capability to do work which has been regarded as the prerogative of men.” The Second World War once again saw women stepping into a wide range of roles.

Daisy James was an Air Raid Precaution warden based in Herongate Road, Aldersbrook. Daisy was in the thick of the action during both the Blitz and the V1 and V2 attacks. Her husband wrote in his diary on 27 July Daisy James 1944: “These fly bombs are definitely becoming a strain. After both Daisy and I being in attendance at 5 of our 6 local incidents and having one of them so near our own doorstep, I must admit that we find these constant alerts very trying.” She and her husband Fred moved to Dale End Gardens, Woodford Green after the war.

The Wonder Women exhibition also looks at the variety of women’s groups in the local area. The Wanstead Women’s Institute celebrated its 10th birthday in 2018 and now has 80 members. Christine Toogood, president of the Wanstead WI remembers: “In 2008, I wanted to join a local WI group in Wanstead but it turned out there wasn’t one. So, the WI helped us to hand out a few flyers to meet a month later in The George pub. When the time came, it was standing room only, and in the crush and noise of the pub nobody could hear the speaker… The meeting was abandoned for a later date in the more sedate surroundings of Christ Church hall. Today, we run a huge range of activities, including talks, visits to places of interest, art and craft activities, charity events, learning new skills and much more.”

Meanwhile, Elsie Dean of Wanstead worked in a ‘secret’ factory deep beneath Wanstead Underground station (shown here). She worked for Plessey of Ilford, who made communications equipment. During the war, to escape German air raids, Plessey moved their factory into the newly built (but unopened) Central Line Underground tunnels between Gants Hill, Redbridge and Wanstead stations. Elsie was interviewed by Redbridge Museum in 2001: “Our machines were actually on the station platforms. I never really felt claustrophobic underground, maybe some did but once you got used to it, it didn’t matter where you were really. I used to come home from work, straight through Wanstead Park and then down the air raid shelter. Go home in the morning to get washed and dressed. All the time the air raid alarms were going off…”

Another group of a very different strain was Wanstead Wanstead and Woodford and Woodford Women for Women for Peace Peace, an offshoot of the local CND and active during the 1980's Cold War. The group attended peace demonstrations and held events on women and health, as well as organising ‘Peace Picnics’ at the Anti-Air Warfare Memorial in Woodford Green. More recent changes to women’s lives are reflected in a ‘vox pop’ film made on the streets of Wanstead and Woodford. In a conversation that will resonate for many, Sahba of South Woodford noted that: “I think it’s harder to be a woman, with trying to balance it all. My husband’s wonderful, he helps out with everything. But with everything you have to do with the children, ferrying them around and then balancing work and feeling happy and not feeling too frazzled by it all… it’s just harder in that sense." Redbridge Museum is located inside Redbridge Central Library in Ilford and is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday. The Wonder Women exhibition is on show until 27 April. For more information, call 020 8708 2317 or visit wavidi.co/rm

Hi-de-Bye, Campers Norman Jacobs will be taking Wanstead Historical Society members on a trip down memory lane this month, to the former Butlin’s Holiday Camp in Clacton, which said goodbye to its happy campers in 1983

T

he former Butlin’s Holiday Camp in Clacton-on-Sea was where I spent many wonderful years, starting at the tender age of three, when, as a very young Eastender, my parents took my brother and me for our first family holiday, returning time after time in the following years. Butlin’s and Clacton became such a happy part of my life that when I first got together with my partner in the 1970s, we decided to leave the East End and live in Clacton. The Butlin’s holiday camp at Clacton opened on 11 June 1938 with a grand ceremony. So immediately successful did the camp become that accommodation was doubled for the start of the 1939 season, enabling it to cater for 2,000 campers. The late 1940s to the early 1960s became the era of the knobbly knees, the glamorous grandmother, the Tarzan lookalike competitions and the rest, a period immortalised in the television sitcom Hi-de-Hi. Many names later to find fame took their first steps towards stardom either as Redcoats or as resident singers at the camp, including Roy Hudd, Dave Allen, Michael Holliday and Cliff Richard, who had his first professional engagement there.

camp began to decline. In addition, the idea of organised games led by Redcoats was beginning to seem old hat and out of step with the individualism of the Swinging Sixties. In the late 1960s, Butlin’s was sold to the Rank Organisation, who made further changes that continued throughout the 70s and 80s, leading eventually to Butlin’s deciding to convert their camps into luxury Holiday Centres and Holiday Villages with upgraded accommodation, as the idea of holiday camps and being a ‘camper’ seemed very outdated in the modern era. To pay for these improvements they decided savings had to be made elsewhere and the decision was taken to close the Clacton camp. The announcement came on 18 October 1983 and Butlin’s Clacton was no more.

There was a strong link between the camp and the town as not only did Butlin’s service the camp using only local businesses, but it also opened up its amenities in the winter to residents with its Winter Social Club, and entered over 20 floats in the annual Clacton Carnival.

My talk will be illustrated with photographs and sound recordings of the period. For those who experienced the camp themselves, it will be a nostalgic experience, while for everyone else, it will show a carefree way of life that has now vanished for ever.

During the 1960s, as people became more affluent, they started going abroad for their holidays where there was a guarantee of sunshine and the numbers staying at the

Norman’s talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 7 January from 8pm (visitors: £3). Call 07949 026 212

A growing club In the second of a series of articles charting the development of Wanstead Youth Club, club volunteer Nylesh Vaghela explains how and why he got involved with the project

I

am a volunteer youth worker, and have over 30 years of experience running the Frenford Badminton Club and helping with the running of their youth club, too. Through doing this, I have only ever worked with young people who do not have additional needs or disabilities. My involvement with Wanstead Youth Club came about following a winter skills trip to Scotland with the Essex Boys and Girls Clubs (EBGC) in February 2017, when Martin Solder (county director of EBGC) asked if I would be interested in helping out with a new project that involved setting up a new inclusive youth club; a club where children with additional needs and disabilities can go and have their own space to develop and make new friends and not just with children who may have similar needs to them, but one that encourages social mixing of all young people which allows them to join in, in all that the club offers. What a great idea, was my initial thought, a place for young people to mix in a safe environment whilst also developing myself as a youth worker, working with a wider range of young people. I thought it would also be a great opportunity to get my daughter, Puja, who has learning difficulties, involved in the project and also involve my wife, Rita, who is a special educational needs assistant at our local primary school. She would be able to apply her skills and knowledge as well, adding to the youth club's offering. What I have witnessed over at Wanstead Youth Club is that although at first the children were very reserved and shy, they have really learnt from each other and have now become

Nylesh supervising football at Wanstead Youth Club

friends. They are all different but actually enjoy being part of a group that allows them to play fun games and sports and take part in various activities, such as word searches, bracelet making and art. It’s amazing to see all the young people learning from each other and integrating into the youth club’s activities. I have seen their confidence grow. They now engage in conversations and share their jokes, smiling and enjoying their time at the club. I can see that this project, with the help from EBGC, is an excellent move forwards to not just giving the children a safe environment to get involved in various sports and activities, but to get everyone involved, whilst helping them gain knowledge around integration and each other’s abilities. My family and I enjoy volunteering with the club and hope it will continue to serve the young people for years to come. Wanstead Youth Club is open to 10- to 25-year-olds and runs every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at Wanstead Youth Centre, 144 Elmcroft Avenue.
