Welcome... Last month, I used this space to indulge in showbiz gossip. With rumours rife Sir Elton John would be leading the John Lewis Christmas TV ad campaign, the opportunity to open our November issue with a ‘step into Christmas’ pun was too good to miss. But now the rumour has been confirmed and piano sales are set to rocket, I wonder if I’ve peaked too soon with Elton song wordplays… let’s find out. As editor, I tend to take my first annual step into Christmas1 a little earlier than many others, planning some festive content as far back as August October.2 Seasonal spreads this year are as diverse as an Elton playlist, with the Wild Wanstead team continuing to help us avoid an empty garden3, the Redbridge Brass Band uniting strangers4 in Aldersbrook with a festive performance and a local artist encouraging us all to gaze up at an empty sky 5 and look out for Santa and his… cows (I need you to turn to6 pages 18–19 to make sense of that). Wanstead certainly is a town of plenty 7. Of course, by the time you read this, I will have already taken a step into January.8 And as Wanstead welcomes the launch of its environmental charter, it is worth remembering it wasn’t that long ago (January 1959, in fact) when dense smog and thick smoke brought London to a standstill. Sixty years on9, much has changed but, as the charter encourages, we should all continue to do our bit to ensure pollution levels come down in time.10 So, despite my focus now being the New Year issue, it’s time now for me to take a step back into December and wish you all a very merry Christmas and a final goodbye11 for 2018 (I promise, that is the last song12 pun of the year). 1. St Mary’s to remain open for community as Festival Church, weekly services to end The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of Wanstead Parish agreed last month not to initiate a process of closure for St Mary’s Church in Wanstead, opting instead to petition the Bishop of Chelmsford to move to a new timetable of worship under a Festival Church model from 4 February 2019. This will see the Grade I-listed venue move from weekly worship to a festival pattern of ‘special and significant services’ in addition to other events and open days throughout the year for the wider community. The decision follows a consultation over the summer, which received

over 200 responses. “This move, which is subject to approval from the Bishop, will allow us to focus our mission and ministry in one central location at Christ Church in order to better utilise all of our resources and serve our local community,” said Revd Dr Jack Dunn.
Funding to build council homes
Have your say on budget proposals
Redbridge Council received confirmation last month of a £20m allocation of funding from City Hall to accelerate the building of at least 200 council homes in the borough. “My administration has committed to delivering 1,000 affordable homes over the next four years and this funding from the Mayor of London is a brilliant outcome for Redbridge,” said Leader of the Council, Councillor Jas Athwal.
Residents are invited to take part in a consultation on Redbridge Council’s budget for the next financial year and beyond. “Sustained government funding reductions have meant taking extremely tough decisions… funding is still set to reduce over the next three years and therefore we would like to hear your views on how you think we should make these savings,” said Councillor Kam Rai. The consultation runs until 31 January. Visit wavidi.co/bd19

World Kindness Day: random acts of kindness all over Wanstead

Councillor Elaine Norman and the kindness tree on Christchurch Green
A kindness tree adorned with thoughtful pledges was one of many ways local residents marked World Kindness Day last month. “There were random acts of kindness happening all over Wanstead: flowers left out for people to take, lunches, coffee and cake paid for and gifts left around for people to enjoy,” said Mark Mountney of Zoology hair salon, who organised the local celebration with anti-bullying ambassador Elsa Arnold. “It was so amazing to get the community together… the response was incredible.”
Hundreds of residents gathered around the Wanstead War Memorial last month to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The event followed a smaller – but also well-attended – Remembrance Day service in the Garden of Remembrance on Snaresbrook Road. A life-sized aluminium silhouette of a British soldier could be seen guarding the High Street memorial, one of six installed on Epping Forest land by the City of London Corporation as part of the nationwide art installation There But Not There.

Wanstead Park visitor centre reopens following repair work
Wanstead Village councillors Jo Blackman and Paul Donovan were joined by local volunteers for a litter pick on Christchurch Green, George Green and surrounding areas last month. The initiative was supported by Redbridge Council and CleanupUK, a charity that helps people organise litter-picking groups to strengthen their community. “It was great to see such enthusiastic support… This will be the start of a series of such initiatives to help clean up Wanstead,” said Councillor Blackman. Email jo.blackman@redbridge.gov.uk
The Temple in Wanstead Park reopened last month following £22,000 worth of surveys and repair work to the visitor centre’s ceiling. A public consultation is now underway on plans for future opening hours and ambitions for the Grade II-listed building, which dates back to the 18th century. This month, the Temple will be open from 10am to 3pm on 8 and 9 December, with current displays including an exhibition telling the story of the Epping Forest Keepers who served in the First World War. Wanstead Church School and Wanstead High School were presented with cheques for over £6,000 each by Wanstead’s Co-op store manager last month. The money was raised throughout the year by the supermarket’s Local Community Fund, which donates 1% of registered shoppers’ spending on selected products to help fund community projects. The cash will be a boost for Wanstead High School’s drama department, while Wanstead Church School will put their share towards constructing a sensory garden.

Pocket home development approved for Wanstead
A local artist has raised £400 for blood cancer charity Bloodwise by selling a jigsaw puzzle of Wanstead landmarks. The project launched in 2017 and saw Neil Clayden montage 25 of his paintings of local scenes, from which 55 1,000-piece jigsaws were produced and sold alongside the original artwork. “We only have five jigsaws left and a number of originals, but we thought as it is just over a year since we launched them in the library, now would be a good time to make the donation,” said Neil. Visit wavidi.co/jigsaw
Permission has been granted for a pocket home development – one-bed, affordable properties – in Wanstead. “In too many boroughs across London, hard-working young people struggle to get on the housing ladder, and Redbridge is no exception. The average home costs over 12 times the average salary here,” said Marc Vlessing, CEO of Pocket Living, which is set to build 20 homes on Gardner Close. Pocket homes are only sold to first-time buyers who are eligible for affordable housing and live or work in the borough.

Forest Gate to Margate: local singer takes Celtic Christmas concert on tour

Caitlin Downie
The work of Great War poets and artists will be examined at Wanstead Library this month to mark the centenaries of the end of the First World War and the death of English poet and soldier Wilfred Owen (1893–1918). “For some, war presented them with a subject for their greatest work. The poetry of Siegfried Sassoon, for example, never reached such heights of passion in either his pre- or postwar poems,” said Nick Dobson, whose talk will take place on 13 December from 6.30pm (free; booking required). A Wanstead resident and classically trained soprano singer will be performing her annual Celtic Christmas concerts at four diverse venues this month: a church in Hertford, a theatre in Margate, a wine wholesaler in Leytonstone and a bar in Forest Gate (all tickets: £10). “The songs featured would have been passed down the generations and sung every year at this festive time, promising glad tidings for the year ahead,” said Caitlin Downie, who was one of the organisers of July’s Music in Wanstead Park festival. Santa Cows As Karen Humpage prepares to self-publish her book depicting the cows that used to roam on Wanstead Flats (and through surrounding streets), the local artist gives Christmas a bovine twist
I
t was rumoured that a team of cows replaced Santa Claus’s reindeer last year while they went off for a gap year in the tropics. Sightings of reindeer on a beach in Jamaica bore out this theory, as did the fact that last year’s Christmas present delivery was rather haphazard. So the story goes in my new book to be published next year. It all started one day in 2016 when I put out a request on a Facebook forum for old photographs of cows in the local area. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I remembered them walking up our road, invading people’s gardens and eating all the flowers, but on recounting this later to my friends, they thought me barmy. I needed proof! Up to the 1990s cows used to be grazed on the common land of Epping Forest, including Wanstead Flats. They would often come into contact with humans when they were moved by herdsmen to different pastures or when they strayed into the surrounding streets. One unexpected result of the Facebook request was the wealth of anecdotes and memories of the cows I received from people who, on the whole, remembered them fondly. I decided to paint pictures of those memories. Wanstead residents may already be familiar with my work from previous art trails, festivals and Wanstead Tube station murals. Now, I am putting all my cow paintings into a book, along with written content based on residents’ anecdotes about the cows that used to wander the streets of Wanstead and Woodford.
I’d hoped to get the book out earlier this year, but I’ve been quite busy with my regular work and art commissions for other people. Those commissions include five large paintings of fish, shellfish and an eight-foot-long lobster for Smith’s restaurant in Ongar. The book is aimed at children for the most part, but there is a chapter of text for grownups too, who will hopefully recognise and enjoy some of the things I have written about. Much of it is based on the anecdotes I received on Facebook, along with photographs of cows in the community. I just have to track everyone down now who sent me photos to obtain their permission for publication! I am publishing my book through Matador, a prominent self-publishing company, as I have been unable to secure interest from regular book publishers. I think my book is probably a bit too local, even though cows on the loose seem to crop up elsewhere up and down the country. So, my next task is to set up a crowdfunding page to help towards publishing costs. Christmas probably isn’t the best time to crowdfund, but I don’t want to hang about any longer to get things started! For more information on Karen’s book and crowdfunding, visit wavidi.co/humpage Prints of Karen’s cow images are available throughout December from the Lopping Hall Art Gallery in Loughton or online. It’s better to give Wanstead resident Frank Charles – who, we are pleased to say, has recently received the gift of a cancer-free declaration after an eightyear battle – invites donations of toys and food for his charity projects
T
he Frank Charles Give a Gift Appeal (FCGAGA) is a small local charity based in Wanstead, which is now in its third year. I set it up in memory of my first son, Ashley, who died at 23 months of age from a rare illness called Hirschsprung’s disease. I was also born with this condition and spent my early childhood years in Great Ormond Street Hospital. Fifteen years ago, I began delivering presents to sick children who were in Acorn Ward at Whipps Cross Hospital at Christmastime as a tribute to Ashley. It became a registered charity three years ago and also grants wishes to children and adults with life-limiting illnesses throughout the year. Two years ago, FCGAGA diversified to incorporate Feed The Streetz, a project which sources and distributes breakfasts to rough sleepers once a week in Wanstead, Waltham Forest, Leyton, Leytonstone, Stratford, Ilford and Plaistow. This is done with the support of a few kind-hearted local people who supply donations of food either weekly or monthly. The project also receives regular donations from Greggs in Wanstead and the Haslers Foundation in Loughton. When I was younger I lost my job and, as a result, found myself homeless for a week. Since then, I have had a great deal of sympathy for people who, for reasons often beyond their control, are living on the streets. I was fortunate in that, when I was homeless, there was provision for people like me and I was offered a place in a hostel. Unfortunately, in the current financial climate, safeguards such as this have largely been cut. Most people do not choose to live out of a carrier bag, sleeping on cardboard boxes, alone

and afraid. There are many reasons for homelessness: breakdown of relationships, loss of a job and mental health problems, to name a few. Feed The Streetz is run once a week for families and individuals on low incomes who are in need of support for one month. They are then referred on to another food bank that may also support them for a limited period of time. The food bank is always in need of nonperishable food and toiletries throughout the year and welcomes your support. I strongly believe that no one should go hungry, regardless of their circumstances. FCGAGA would also welcome donations of new toys for this year’s Christmas toy appeal, which will be delivered to Acorn children’s ward on 20 December. The deadline for the donation of toys is 18 December. For more information about Frank’s charity work and to make a donation, visit frankcharles.org.uk or call 07782 218 112

A growing club In the first of a series of articles charting the development of Wanstead Youth Club, club leader Callum Alexander – who is keen to welcome new members and volunteers – explains how it all began
I
work for an organisation called Essex Boys and Girls Clubs (EBGC), who were lucky enough to secure funding in 2017 to open three new inclusive youth clubs in three different London boroughs: Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham and Havering. The project is funded for three years through the Big Lottery and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, who distributed the funding to targeted areas across England through the Youth Investment Fund. As part of this project, I was appointed as the Outreach Officer for Redbridge. My early tasks saw me networking and finding a suitable location for the youth club, while my current work is about growing membership of the club and developing the programme of activities on offer. The later stages will see me focusing on the sustainability of the club, ensuring it is around for the long term and in a position to continue offering a varied activity programme to its users. After a lot of networking and viewing many different venues, I decided upon Wanstead Youth Centre as the location for the youth club. The club opened in February this year, offering young people a range of activities and sports, but most importantly, a safe environment. Alongside our core programme of activities and sports – such as table tennis, pool, arts and crafts, football and dodgeball – the club also gets involved in EBGC’s wider activity programme, which has seen some of our young people visit outdoor centres, such as Stubbers Adventure Centre and Layer Marney Outdoors, whilst also competing in the County Table Tennis Championships. As the club leader, I am constantly looking to grow our membership and volunteer
Wanstead Youth Club members
numbers. Partnership work with Frenford Clubs and Redbridge Children Young People Network (RCYPN), who are part of Redbridge Council for Voluntary Services (RCVS), has been highly beneficial for this and has allowed me to gain useful knowledge, which has complemented the work I have done at the club to date. The club currently has a membership of 40, averaging 15 attendees per session. We also have five volunteers, without whom the sessions we run simply wouldn’t be possible. Going forward, my aim is to increase both the membership and volunteer numbers, while also starting new activities within the club, such as a gardening project (planned for March 2019) and a music project utilising the fantastic studio at Wanstead Youth Centre, which will begin once a suitable tutor has been identified. Wanstead Youth Club is open to 10- to 25-year-olds and runs every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at Wanstead Youth Centre, 144 Elmcroft Avenue. In the ninth of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multi-garden nature reserve – Alex Deverill tests your knowledge about one of our icons of Christmas
R
obins (Erithacus rubecula) are regularly voted Britain’s favourite bird, and at this time of year you see them everywhere, on Christmas cakes, cards and decorations as well as in the garden. But how much do you actually know about these friendly, and feisty, little creatures? Why do robins have a red breast? The red feathers on a robin aren’t there to look good for a mate – their sole purpose is territory defence. Robins are highly territorial birds and the merest flash of red will trigger a response. They might look sweet but they’ll fight to the death over a garden for breeding or food. Do males and females look different? Nope, they’re pretty much the same. If you see a little robin-shaped bird that’s speckled brown, it’s a juvenile. To stop them being attacked by adults when they’re young, robins don’t develop their red breast until they are two or three months old. Where do robins go in summer? Although a few British robins prefer to find somewhere warmer for winter, most stay home and put up with the weather. However, they do seem to disappear in July and August.
QWERTYSDFGVCAZXPLK
December 2018 This is the time of year when their feathers moult. It takes a lot of energy for feathers to be shed and regrown, and the birds are more vulnerable during the process, which means they tend to keep a low profile.
wall. Nests are made from grass, moss and dead leaves, lined with hair and wool. They’re renowned for occasionally selecting more unusual locations such as kettles, cars and coat pockets – even someone’s bed!
When do robins sing? When don’t robins sing! They’re one of the few UK birds to sing all year round and can go at it all day, from the start of the dawn chorus to late in the evening. In fact, lights and noises can trigger robins to start singing in the middle of the night (which means they’re sometimes mistaken for nightingales).
When do robins have their young? Robins are prolific breeders and can have three to five broods a year, each containing four or five eggs. If the weather is mild, they can breed as early as January, though it is more usual for them to start in March. Mum sits on the eggs, but both parents share responsibility for finding worms and insects to feed the babies.
What do robins sing? Something along the lines of: twiddle-oo, twiddle-eedee, twiddle-oo twiddle. What do robins eat? Robins mainly eat insects and worms. They’ll perch up high, watching for movement, then swoop down to grab their prey. They often materialise when gardeners are digging, on the lookout for some easy pickings. Where do robins nest? Robins nest pretty much anywhere – usually a hole in a tree, bank or
How long do robins live? Robins tend to live fast and die young. On average, they only live for a couple of years. They are particularly susceptible to severe winter weather, especially if it lasts longer than a week. Why are robins associated with Christmas? Robins are present in our gardens all year round but are associated with Christmas thanks to the Victorians. Back then, postmen were nicknamed Robins due to their red tunics, and when the fashion for sending Christmas cards began, the two became synonymous. What can I do to encourage robins in my garden? Have trees and shrubs for them to shelter in (hawthorn, holly or rowan are perfect). Ensure your garden is good for insects, for example, include flowers for pollinators (like sunflowers or honeysuckle), plenty of greenery for bugs to hide in, grow ivy up a fence and let some leaves pile up in a corner. You could put up a nest box (they like open-fronted ones) or leave out mealworms as a treat, especially in cold weather. A pond or bird bath are good additions, too. This is an edited version of a talk given by Richard Arnopp at the recent ‘lest we forget’ open day at St Mary’s Church in Wanstead, commemorating the lives of those who died in the two world wars
O
liver Trevelyan Dawson, known in the family as Treves, was the eldest of the three children of Oliver Samuel Dawson. He was born in 1879 in West Ham, where his parents were then living. By 1894 the family had moved to Wanstead (they were living at 18 Mansfield Road, which was then a newly built private house on the Oak Hall Estate). It was about this time that Oliver wrote a booklet on the history of Wanstead Park, which I republished with new material in 2014. By 1911 the family was renting a larger property known as Fir Tree Cottage on George Lane – since renamed Nutter Lane – and Oliver Senior was in business as a ‘photographic materials maker’, with his sons working for him. The following year Treves married May Gladys Fennings and left his parents to set up a new home with her in Ilford. Two years later began the First World War. When Treves enlisted, he was initially posted to a cavalry training regiment, and then to the 11th Machine Gun Cavalry Brigade Squadron. The Machine Gun Corps gained a reputation for heroism, but its high casualty rate earned it the army nickname ‘The Suicide Club’. Treves met his end, aged 38, during the Battle of Cambrai, which opened on 20 November 1917. As so often, after early successes, the British offensive had ground to a halt in the face of fierce German counter-attacks. On 1 December the British launched an attack with tanks and cavalry against Gauche Wood and Villers Guislain. At 9.35am the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) commenced a cavalry charge in the old style followed by a squadron from the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. On their left, the remainder of the Inniskillings charged
northwards from Peizière towards Villers Guislain. The leading squadron and the 11th Machine Gun Squadron were brought to a halt a kilometre short of the village. Few of them were seen again and the rear squadrons were forced to retire to Peizière. Treves Dawson and 13 other men of his unit died, along with 79 horses. The men are listed on the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval as having no known grave – which usually indicates heavy fighting followed by retreat. Indeed, the Battle of Cambrai ended six days later, with the Germans having recaptured most of their lost ground, which they were to retain until the end of September 1918. Treves is remembered on his parents’ grave in St Mary’s churchyard. Their names are carved along the kerb but the headstone is dedicated to him alone. He is also commemorated on the Wanstead War Memorial, which features the names of 198 men, although recent research has revealed the actual death toll for the neighbourhood was nearly 40% higher. Richard Arnopp’s updated edition of Oliver S Dawson’s Wanstead and its Park is available from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands. Visit wavidi.co/dawson

Remembering Tom
At Wanstead Church School’s Remembrance assembly, pupils, staff and parents took time to honour the fallen, and in particular, ex-pupil Tom Curry. Departing Head Teacher Mark Hemsley reports
T
om Curry was a former pupil of both Wanstead Church School and Wanstead High School. A boy who loved sports, but especially rugby, Tom joined the Air Training Corps (ATC) at the age of 14. While with the ATC, he went on a Marine assault course and from then on was set upon joining the Royal Marines. Tom was sadly killed in action in Afghanistan in 2007, aged just 21 years and 12 days. After his death, Tom’s parents donated a trophy to the school in his memory. We have been delighted that, in the centenary year of the Armistice, the award has been refreshed and presented to a current pupil of the school. We decided this year to start awarding the cup on a termly basis so that, each term, we can focus on the qualities of children from across the school; this time we have nominated children from the upper juniors, Years 5 and 6. We took inspiration from Tom himself, who was awarded his Commando medal for showing the qualities of leadership, cheerfulness, determination and unselfishness, and used the same qualities when deciding who to nominate. Every member of the school staff voted for the pupil they felt most deserving which, this year, went to Hannah Boase in Year 5. Hannah was presented with the trophy in front of her proud parents, staff and fellow pupils during our special Remembrance assembly. The other children from Year 5 and 6 who were nominated for the award were Joel Poraj, Frances Williams, Lauren Rodriguez, Noah Hunt and Vlada Dedin. The whole school community was inspired and moved by being reminded of Tom’s story
Hannah Boase with the Tom Curry trophy
and by visiting the Wanstead War Memorial on which his name is proudly inscribed. We look forward to continuing this award next term to someone in the lower juniors and then again to an infant child in the summer. We have also linked the time of the award to significant and notable dates: in the autumn, it will be awarded as close to Remembrance Sunday as possible; in spring, as close to the start of Lent as possible; and in summer, as close to Armed Forces Day as possible. As I come to the end of my time leading Wanstead Church School, I can reflect on the past seven years with great pride. The school is a central part of our vibrant local community, with a long history of links with both the people and the parish. I will take with me many happy memories and will be forever grateful for the opportunities it has given to me. I know that I leave the school with a strong and dedicated team of staff who will support its continued success into the next stage of its history. Points, no prizes For many, the prospect of losing their driving licence is unthinkable. Here, Emma Clements, a partner in the criminal department of local solicitors Wiseman Lee, outlines what all motorists need to know
I
f you commute to work or need to use a vehicle to earn a living, being disqualified from driving can cause huge problems. There is also the inconvenience to family and social life, not to mention higher insurance premiums when the ban is finally lifted. It’s time to put the record straight. Here’s what you need to know. Mandatory disqualification You will automatically lose your licence if you are convicted of a number of offences, including causing death by dangerous or careless driving, dangerous driving, driving while under the influence of excess alcohol or failing to provide a specimen for analysis (if you are the driver). The period of obligatory disqualification may be reduced or avoided if a ‘special reason’ exists. This must relate to the offence itself; circumstances relating to the driver are not considered. Discretionary disqualification The courts can choose to impose a driving ban if you are found guilty of a whole host of other motoring offences, including careless driving, driving whilst disqualified, failing to report an accident or failing to stop after an accident, failing to identify the driver of a vehicle or driving with no insurance. Penalty points: the ‘totting-up’ system You will normally lose your licence if you get 12 or more points within three years. If you are disqualified under the ‘totting-up’ rules, all penalty points are erased. If you have incurred 12 points or more in three years, you will normally lose your licence for a minimum of 6 months. However, you may have read about motorists who have avoided a ban or had it reduced after raising exceptional hardship or other mitigating
circumstances. This means demonstrating that a driving ban would cause more than the straightforward hardship of no longer being able to drive or even the loss of a job. Examples include proving that an innocent third party would be negatively affected as a result of a ban, such as elderly relatives or employees. This legal argument is only likely to be successful where there is clear, wellprepared supporting evidence and persuasive advocacy. The court will need to hear compelling evidence if they are to be persuaded not to disqualify in these circumstances. Getting your licence back The court will decide the period of disqualification based upon the offence itself and the particular circumstances of each case. If you are disqualified for 56 days or more you must apply to the DVLA for a new licence before you can drive again. The court may also order you to re-take your driving test before your licence is returned. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead, E11 2PU. For more information, call 020 8215 1000

Supporting football Have you ever dreamt of being part of a local football team flying high at the top of one of Essex’s major county leagues? If so, volunteers and supporters are welcome at Snaresbrook FC, says Millicent Brown
S
naresbrook FC, based off Wanstead’s Nutter Lane, is presently in first place in Division One of the Essex Olympian Football League and is keeping its fingers crossed for promotion. And they’re actively looking out for people to allow this great, historic club to carry on their progression up the footballing pyramid as they’d like to snap up match-day physios, linesmen, hospitality staff and many more. Originally named RAFARNO – short for Royal Air Force Army Royal Navy Officers – the club was set up at the end of World War One to provide sporting activities for the local community. Even these days, a fenced-off section with a fir tree remains at the top end of the ground, marking the area where horses and carriages used to turn around to drop off and pick up passengers. At the moment, Snaresbrook FC is doing brilliantly in top position, six points clear from the team below – so it’s fingers crossed for the end of the season celebrations. And you could be a part of it! Snaresbrook FC has relied for so many years on parents and players to ‘do their bit’ but are still in constant need of investment and volunteers. So, why not pop down to the club to watch a match and meet up with other friendly local supporters and enjoy a chat and drink? The club recently secured sponsorship from ex-footballing legend and local businessman Frank Lampard Sr (owner of Nightingale on the Green pub), and local waste management company Bywaters, which allowed the club to invest in training equipment, tracksuits and new kit for the first time in over five years. Ex-player and new manager Robert Caine, who played for Snaresbrook for two decades,
Frank Lampard Sr with Snaresbrook FC
said: “This club and the family feeling has never left my blood since the day I arrived. My manager for all that time, Paul Staniford, was a huge role model for myself and many other Snaresbrook players. After his service for over 35 years for the club and community, I could not turn down the opportunity to take up the reins. It’s a great opportunity for me to repay all his hard work over the years and a chance to bring the same success and opportunities it gave me and my peers to another generation of Snaresbrook players. Something I’ve tried to add as the manager is to grow the reputation of this club through social media and build on its great history.“ Talking about the importance of local support, Robert added: “At a time when football clubs are struggling to survive at grass roots level due to lack of investment and dedicated people like our club hero Paul ‘Stan’ Staniford, I think it’s an appropriate opportunity to welcome any volunteers and supporters to play a part in this local, community-based football club.” For more information on Snaresbrook FC, email snaresbrookfc@gmail.com or follow the club on Twitter @Snaresbrookfc for details of games and results.

Charting the Charter In the first of a series of articles following the progress of Wanstead’s environmental charter, Councillor Paul Donovan encourages us all to contribute to the success of this new initiative
T
There are 50,000 deaths in the UK every year due to pollution, some 9,500 in London alone. Humanity is effectively poisoning itself and everything else on the planet. Then there is the incredible loss of biodiversity over recent years, with 25% of mammals, 41% of amphibians and 13% of birds under threat. And it is these dramatic revelations that have, in part, led to the idea of creating an environmental charter for Wanstead. The idea was launched at a meeting held at Wanstead Library in October. The charter’s focus is on climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity. The plan is to focus on what can be done to improve these three areas, with cleaner journeys, more vegetation and less plastic, waste and litter and greener homes. Cleaner journeys will mean more pedestrian travel, use of cycles and public transport. Better cycling routes, safer roads and nonpolluting buses will all be contributory to this goal. The council are already looking at the possibility of vehicle exclusion areas around schools to reduce the pollution levels. The increase in vegetation has already begun with the work of Wild Wanstead and the Wanstead Community Gardeners. The planting of tree pits in 40 roads earlier this year and beds around the town are evidence of a new, greener Wanstead beginning to appear. The charter will mean building on this with wild areas in places like Christchurch Green and George Green, creating green walls and hedgerow and tree planting. It is hoped more schools can take on green initiatives like

he latest report from the International Panel on Climate Change warns there are 12 years to save the world from the ravages of climate change. This means keeping warming levels at 1.5ºC or below.
Christchurch Green
the excellent edible playground now in place at Snaresbrook Primary. There will also be efforts to encourage people not to concrete over their gardens. On litter and waste, we have already begun voluntary litter picks – the first was held on 17 November. But there will also be moves to make Wanstead as plastic-free as possible. Finally, on greener homes, there will be moves to make things like solar panels and insulation more cheaply available to residents. People will be encouraged to think more holistically of the environment and the impact they are having on the world around them. All of this will only be possible if people buy into the idea across the community. We will be looking for the council, schools, businesses, civil societies and individuals to all sign up to do something to contribute to delivering the charter. If we all pull together, then a cleaner, greener and better Wanstead can be achieved. And maybe more importantly, we will be doing our bit to save the planet on which we all depend for survival. For more information on the charter and to get involved, visit wavidi.co/charter

Let it snow, man Ahead of a performance of The Snowman soundtrack to accompany a local screening of the festive film this month, Redbridge Brass Band member Dave Wallace recalls a few other cool moments for the group
Y
ikes! Snow is forecast for Wanstead this month! Relax everyone, it’s in the shape of the animated film classic The Snowman, being screened in Aldersbrook with Redbridge Brass Band playing the film’s enchanting soundtrack live. That magical sound of a brass band is something many people associate with the festive season. It conjures up the aroma of hot chestnuts, tinsel, fairy-lights, carols and, of course, Christmas shopping trips, together with that big drop in temperature! One of my early memories from when I was in The Salvation Army was walking the streets of Redbridge playing carols under lamp posts while people stood on their doorsteps to listen. The weather was generally freezing then too, as I recall, and often in treacherously slippery conditions made worse by having to hold a lump of ice-cold metal to my face – which in my case was, and still is, a trombone. Times have certainly changed, with Redbridge Brass Band moving from the streets of Ilford to the Olympic Stadium and the floodlights of a West Ham United Christmas fixture. Playing in the stadium through the house speakers gave a sensational sound swirling all around us. You could have half-expected Santa to come flying in to the arena with a train of reindeer leading the way and a glitter trail behind! Well, he didn’t turn up, but we were each provided with Christmas jumpers specially made for the club, which gave the band a festive – and rather cuddly – appearance. This was all further enhanced by the bubble-making machines on full tilt. The wheels of the bus do indeed go roundand-round but so do the wheels on those classic steam trains that used to grace our
Members of Redbridge Brass Band at Epping Ongar Railway
railways. Well, I’m far too young to remember actual steam travel, so it was a complete delight to learn that Santa will be using a steam locomotive this year to help speed up deliveries. This means, of course, I get to hang about at Epping Ongar Railway with the other guys from the band to provide that special Christmassy sound while Santa delights the children on his express in December. For some reason, playing in a brass band also means having to do stuff in cold weather, and for quite a few years, I’ve been competing in Skegness at one of the biggest contests in banding, which always seems to be in January. It has often been snowing by then, and the spectacularly vast beaches look bleak and beautiful, even though there’s a biting off-shore wind that makes your face ache. I’ll be going again next month with Redbridge Brass Band, hoping to repeat the magnificent victory we had there a few years ago. If we are unlucky, I’m sure there will be snow at least. Redbridge Brass Band will be performing The Snowman soundtrack alongside a screening of the film at St Gabriel’s Church in Aldersbrook on 8 December at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm (adults: £12; under-15s: £6; under-3s: free). ake a walk through the darker alleyways of Whitechapel and Spitalfields late at night. Choose a night when it is cold, raining, with no moon and when the last wine bars and pubs have closed. Walk along Blossom Street and see how the light from the solitary street lamp bounces off the wet cobbles at your feet, the old dark warehouses loom above you. It will be quiet, very quiet… apart from the occasional sound of hurrying footsteps behind you. It won’t take a lot of imagination to go back 130 years to 1888 when Spitalfields and Whitechapel were in the grip of Jack the Ripper murder hysteria. On any chosen night, groups of tourists from all over the world and those who are just interested in Jack the Ripper will follow the trail with their guide, whatever the weather. When I began the research for this photography exhibition, I was amazed how many people were on the Ripper trail each evening. I estimate between 100 and 200 – there is certainly an enormous fascination with the subject.
For his latest exhibition, local photographer Geoff Wilkinson has recorded the contemporary atmosphere of Jack the Ripper murder sites in the East End of London, and it doesn’t take much imagination to be transported back to the 19th century
For me, there was another aspect as well as the crimes as I walked around the murder sites. One of the things that struck me was how little there was left of the original locations; it suddenly became important to capture what was left before it all disappeared. I wanted to take a contemporary look at the sites while there was still some detail and atmosphere left to photograph. What I didn’t want was a model dressed in top hat and long cloak. I just wanted to visit the locations, or as close to the murder sites as possible, and capture the feeling that still exists late at night. That is why I chose to work as much as possible when it was cold, dark and rainy. Having explored the murder sites, in some cases everything has disappeared, including the original buildings and roads, but the atmosphere still exists. It is impossible not to be moved when you hear the story of the women and their plight. The mystery of who Jack the Ripper was has never been solved, his identity never discovered; I doubt it ever will. All we are left with is the mystery and atmosphere of those alleyways late at night.

Geoff’s photography exhibition of Jack the Ripper murder sites will be on show at the 84 Gallery on Nightingale Lane, Wanstead until 21 December. For more information, call 020 8530 1244

More than meets the ear On Monday mornings at Wanstead House, singing, instruments and laughter can be heard alongside the sound of little dancing feet. Abigail Dance from Redbridge Music Service invites you to join in
A
s a music educator with 20 years of experience, nothing gives me greater joy than leading these Mini Musicians classes as, through laughter, song, dance and music, we learn a great deal more than first meets the eye‌ or the ear! Music can calm or invigorate and bring to mind times of happiness or sadness; and this is just the start of the benefits of music. Mini Musicians classes start with a hello song in place of calling a register and this encourages vocal participation of parents and children alike to find their voice and increase confidence. As the weeks progress, children contribute more and more as they learn the sounds and routines of the lessons. These songs and skills can be repeated at home and while out and about to enhance activities. Tidy-up time is much more fun with the tidyup song to help us! Initially, the babies and toddlers respond through acknowledgement of their name with a smile or a wiggle and, over time, through vocalising. Friends in the class greet each other in song, making eye contact and smiling in our learning circle to encourage communication and contact. Before school days, such social and supportive environments are a wonderful way to meet others and learn to work and play together in readiness for the formal school environment. Friendships are formed between both children and parents, which extend beyond the classes, such as the teddy bears’ picnic on the lawn after our outside music lesson. Songs and games teach children about awareness of the seasons, nature, their bodies, everyday tasks, taking turns, counting, when to make sound and when to listen, and much more besides. The children are also encouraged to look out for these things
Abigail and her mini musicians on a musical bear hunt at Wanstead House
outside of the class. When we practice listening, we improve our attention, and the sounds of animals, for example, can be linked to pictures through musical games and, in time, to reading the name of the animal. Dancing with our babies installs a good feeling of pulse, which helps develop speech patterns and coordination of the body. Play-based learning can be explored through music and movement, allowing children to lead activities using instruments and dance. This allows the child to make choices about which instruments to play and how or in which order we will sing the songs. We, as parents and teachers, acknowledge and mimic them, which is a wonderful way for a child to feel heard and encourages creativity as well as promoting self-confidence. As we sing our goodbye song and pack away our instruments, colourful scarves and puppets at the end of every session, we always go away smiling. Often, I hear the children singing as they leave, and I hope they take their songs to others and come back the next week ready to collect more to share. Abigail is head of early years learning at Redbridge Music Service. For more information, call 020 8708 2828

HIDDEN
L
ondon town is aglow with decorations. Wanstead is blossoming with bright blue and white lights adorning lamp posts. The Christmas tree provides a shining beacon on George Green. Festivals of light feature in religious and secular celebrations at this time of year. Each bringing brightness to the dark midwinter days. The last days of the old year edging towards the first days of the new – a period for reflection and hope. This Christmas will be 100 years since the first Christmas after the Great War. The Armistice centenary commemorations across the country reminded us of the loss which occurred during those terrible years between 1914 and 1918. I wonder what Christmas would have been like for those returning from the devastating conflict and for those whose family members and friends never returned home. Communities can do so much to support people experiencing troubled lives. Often communities are based around religious establishments. Mosques, temples and churches often offer much to local people. But we can also offer kindness and assistance on an individual level. We are each part of a community after all. Wanstead is privileged to have many historic churches. Some, however, might be preparing to serve their communities in different ways as needs change.

eclectic & electric Derek Farr of the East London and Essex Electronic Keyboard Club invites anyone yet to enjoy the diverse musical beauty of the electric organ to join them for a concert at Wanstead Library this month
T
he East London and Essex Electronic Keyboard Club (formerly the East London and Essex Organ Society) was founded in 1982 by people who were learning to play the electronic organ at Freedmans in Leytonstone (long since closed). They were people of all ages (five to 75) and they were encouraged by the music teachers to meet once a month to socialise and entertain each other. At first, Freedmans supplied the Yamaha organs and set them up at the Maypole pub in Barkingside. It did not take long to realise the venue was too small – interest in organ and keyboard music was growing! We moved to the Churchill Room of Wanstead Library at the end of 1982 and have remained there ever since. After the move, we still had our members play and entertain us, and as we grew, so did the quality of those players. From an early stage we had regular professional concerts (10 months of the year with two months as members’ nights). The club started with 53 members and quickly became established as a warm and friendly group that guests and players wanted to come back to. Membership rose to 124 in 1996 and by 2004 it was still at 120, but sadly, our numbers are dwindling like so many other clubs. So, we are looking for new members to join us and experience a great atmosphere. The club is not a church organ society but an electronic keyboard club and the artistes are top-class, with their concerts being made up of all types of music from classical to big band, TV themes to show tunes and more up-to-date music – something for everyone. The artiste booked for December is one of the club’s favourites, Brett Wales – one of the best on the circuit. Brett was raised by
his grandparents and it was his grandfather Alwyn who returned home from work one day to discover his young grandson playing his Elka 707 organ with his left hand and keeping time to the rhythm unit. Alwyn asked if Brett could do the same with his right hand. The response was astounding. Unruffled by the request, Brett did as asked, but with both hands at once. Brett was only three at the time and Alwyn realised his grandson might be talented! Brett is a regular player at our club, appearing nearly every year, so why not come along and hear him play his white Wersi organ (electronic)? Our concerts are enhanced by way of a projection and screen so you can see the artistes playing from anywhere in the hall. We are a very friendly club and would welcome any newcomers and guests. The East London and Essex Electronic Keyboard Club meet on the second Wednesday of every month from 7.50pm to 10.15pm (doors open at 7.15pm) in the Churchill Room of Wanstead Library (annual membership: £12; member admission: £7; visitors: £9; under-16s: £1). In the second of a series of articles looking at the history of Wanstead Park, its current state and the developing plans for restoring this important green space, Richard Arnopp from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands looks at Humphry Repton’s input to the landscape in the early 19th century
RESTORING Wanstead Park
December 2018
T
he year 2018, now approaching its end, marks the bicentenary of the landscape designer Humphry Repton (1752–1818). Considered the heir to Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1716–1783), as well as anticipating some of the trends in 19thcentury gardening, he worked on some 400 sites during his career. About 40 of these were in Essex, where he lived from 1786 at Hare Street, outside Romford. Several of the gardens for which he produced proposals were very local – four in what is now Redbridge (Wanstead, Claybury, Woodford and Woodford Hall) and two in Waltham Forest (Highams and Wallwood House). One of these commissions, Wanstead Park, was regarded by Repton as particularly important. He had long been disappointed at never having secured royal patronage but, in declining health and approaching the end of his career, he relished the opportunity of leaving his mark on the setting of one of the country’s most celebrated and palatial houses. Wanstead had been a magnet for visitors for over a century but was now very much at the centre of fashionable society. Having for several years been home to members of the exiled French royal family, its glamorous young owners, William and Catherine Long-Wellesley, had decided to make it their principal residence following their marriage in 1812. Repton’s detailed proposals for Wanstead Park, which he developed between March and September 1813, were believed lost for many years until they suddenly emerged in 2002 from a private collection and were purchased by Getty Library. These comprised the raw material for one of his famous ‘red books’ – the bound volumes containing his handwritten reports and watercolours showing scenes before and after implementation of his improvements. Before then, knowledge of Repton’s work at Wanstead had depended on references in his published writings as well as some letters and estate plans. That no finished ‘red book’ was produced for Wanstead was a disappointment for Repton, given the time and care he had lavished on the project and the prestige he hoped to garner from it. However, correspondence with
the Long-Wellesleys make it clear they did not want the proposals publicised. Given that Repton’s pricing structure for his consultancy services was heavily weighted toward production of a ‘red book’, this would have disadvantaged him in financial terms (his idiosyncratic business model was one reason he never became as wealthy as Lancelot Brown). Repton’s proposals for Wanstead included some major – and potentially very expensive – suggestions for the lakes. However, most of his other proposals, though imaginative, were not very radical. Much of the park landscape had gradually been assuming a softer, more natural appearance since the middle of the 18th century. However, Repton respected the remaining elements of the old formal landscape, while making suggestions for new features and “scenes of variety and contrast’’. Some of his proposals were certainly adopted, such as a parterre, which still exists as an earthwork in front of the site of Wanstead House, but there are question marks over others. Perhaps more might have been done, but the Wanstead estate was caught up in the financial troubles of its owners, and the 1820s saw the house demolished and the park despoiled and ruined. Humphry Repton did not live to see this, however, having died in 1818, aged 65. The next article in this series will outline some of the archaeological discoveries brought to light by the recent low water levels in Wanstead Park’s lakes. The London Parks and Garden’s Trust has published a book to mark Repton’s bicentenary. Happy new year A course to help make London a happier and more caring place will launch at Wanstead House next month. Course facilitator Jane Mallen explains why she supports Action for Happiness
L
iving in a crowded city like London, our senses can be constantly bombarded with everything from negative news to traffic problems and noise, and with that added to other daily stresses of life, a feeling of overwhelm can easily kick in. Being a bit of a people-watcher, I notice how much some of us are affected, suffering from low mood, low self-esteem and feelings of isolation. This year, I discovered Action for Happiness, a UK-based movement of people taking action for a happier world, which has over 100,000 members. It is secular, science-based and open to people of all backgrounds. Action for Happiness is funded by its members and has no commercial, political or religious affiliations. It is a registered charity and its patron is the Dalai Lama. Its members take action to increase wellbeing in their homes, workplaces, schools and local communities. Their vision is a happier world, with fewer people suffering mental health problems and more people feeling good, functioning well and helping others. This vision very much struck a chord with me, and when I saw that they were running a course called Exploring What Matters – billed as proven to leave people happier and more likely to help others – my interest was piqued, and I decided to get involved as a course facilitator. I read how one of the course participants, who had suffered for over 10 years with chronic pain which left her unable to work, described how it helped her: “I wouldn’t be where I am now without Action for Happiness and that course. I found there were things I could do that would make a big difference and started to feel hopeful about the future. I still have
bad days and life certainly isn’t perfect, but it has really helped me so much. Now, I’m trying to be the change that I want to see.” My co-facilitator, Rachel Jarvis, and I will be running an eight-week Exploring What Matters course starting next month at Wanstead House. We are not teaching – we look forward to exploring, week by week with other participants, what matters in life and what makes us happy, and eventually, how we can take action in our own lives to create happier workplaces and communities. Analysis of this course has found it leaves people both happier and more pro-social, with participants reporting increases in levels of life satisfaction, mental wellbeing, compassion and social trust. Many say the course is life-changing. So, if these ideas interest you too, do come along and join us in January. We would love to meet you. The Exploring What Matters course begins on 14 January. S
ince the War, Woodford Photographic Society had been affiliated to the Central Association of Photographic Societies, but had never taken part in any of the activities. In 1965, the borough of Wanstead and Woodford was amalgamated with Ilford and parts of Chigwell and Dagenham to become the London Borough of Redbridge, part of a new ‘Greater London’. The society then came within the geographic area of the East Anglian Federation (EAF) of Photographic Societies and decided to resign from the Central Association and join the East Anglian Federation. Two of the main organisers of the EAF lived in Woodford: Fred James and Daisy James. As local residents, they were invited to become honorary members of the Woodford Photographic Society. Fred died a year afterwards, but Daisy became an active member. Daisy James involved the society in the EAF annual exhibitions, and for several years, Woodford was among the leading clubs for successful entries in these exhibitions. In May 1967, Woodford had the highest number of prints and slides accepted. One of Reg Fowkes’ prints was subsequently included in the EAF’s entry for the inter-federation competition held by the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. In 1968, the society was again successful with five monochrome prints and 56 colour slides accepted. Four of the prints and two of the slides were then selected to represent the Federation at the national interfederation contest. This placed Woodford once again amongst the front rank of the societies in the region. The records show that the society was a thriving club in the 1970s and proud of its long tradition. The committee decided to set up a permanent collection to keep a record of the work of the club; for example, typical prints of members past and present and, where possible, the winning prints of the Newmarch Trophy. Reg Fowkes began to organise the collection of these works in 1970, and the collection would ultimately include photographs from the mid-1950s
through to the mid-1990s, with a few from earlier years. The minutes of the society at this time are often silent on matters concerning the history of photography in general. It is not certain when the first colour prints made from colour negative film were exhibited at competitions, but in 1975 the club bought an enlarger suitable for colour printing for the use of members at a cost of £40. Colour slide work also became increasingly popular and, in 1979, the society decided to purchase a new projection screen and establish a new slide competition. The society took the opportunity to join the Redbridge Arts Council in 1975. At that time, the annual subscription to the Arts Council was £1.50. In 1978, the annual subscription to the Woodford Photographic Society was £5. In 1977, the club arranged an evening entitled Son of Pollocks Peep Show by Sir George and Lady Pollock. This was held at the Sir James Hawkey Hall in November and other clubs in the area were invited. The show was a great success and made a profit of nearly £100. With the continuing advances made in the photographic
December 2018 industry, photography became a hobby that everyone could enjoy and many people possessed cameras. The population of the area was also expanding, but despite this, in 1987, the club had fewer than 50 members, possibly because of the increasing attraction of television. In 1982, the club moved from the Ray Lodge church hall to the Hollis Room at South Woodford Library. The premises at Ray Lodge had given problems because of the need for ‘blacking out’ and the general lack of comfort. Membership had reduced to about 40 people.
