Welcome... £1.09 per person per year. That was the widely reported cost of each of the 67 medals won by Team GB in Rio last month. While the ethical and economic debates about funding in sport will no doubt continue, something more clear-cut is the acknowledgement that financial input is just one of many ingredients in the recipe for success. We watched the live show and enjoyed the end results – what most of us didn’t see was the hard work and dedication that came before the final performances. This concept is not limited to the Olympics, of course, or indeed to sport. The behind-the-scenes work that results in a highly polished performance or a finely tuned product is something I’m sure many of us can relate to. And if ever there is a month in Wanstead’s cultural calendar to turn our attention to those who have ‘put the work in’, then September is it. With the culmination of what must be thousands of man-hours among numerous organisers and participants, the wider public can now enjoy the final performances of Art Trail Wanstead, the Wanstead Fringe and the Wanstead Festival. They may not be taking place in Rio and Christchurch Green may not be in the same league as the Maracanã Stadium, but Wanstead will rejoice nonetheless in the multi-sensory delights of these annual celebrations of community spirit and achievement. Our 67 medals may have come at a price and in the current climate of austerity the question of affordability is a valid one. But less easily measured is the benefit to society that such an outstanding national achievement brings. The opposite, however, may be true on a local scale. It’s probably hard to put a price on the funds used by the diverse range of participants involved in the staging of this month’s events, but the benefit to our community is easy to Lee Marquis, Editor calculate: priceless.

Capturing the essence of Wanstead: art trail, fringe and festival open to all Art Trail Wanstead, the Wanstead Fringe and the Wanstead Festival – three annual community events – will all return to the streets of Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook this month. With the trail and the fringe both launching on the same day, there’s mutual support, with artists using their Flamingo Fair on 10 September as one of the fringe’s jumble trail venues. The fair, which will take place at Wanstead Library (11am to 4pm), will also include craft workshops and portrait drawing sessions, setting the theme for community

Harun, who works as a civil engineer, has been involved with the MCB since its inception in 1997 and led the group’s launch of Eid celebrations in Trafalgar Square in 2006. “It is deeply humbling to be the MCB’s sixth Secretary General,” said Harun. Green Flag parks in Redbridge

Holiday-themed poetry session

Following the recent publication of this year’s Green Flag Award winners, there are now a total of nine parks and open spaces in Redbridge that have the right to fly the iconic flag. Elmhurst Gardens, Goodmayes Park, Ilford War Memorial, South Park, Valentines Park and Hainault Forest Country Park have each retained their Green Flag status, with Claybury Woods, Clayhall Park and Seven Kings Park also achieving the high standards required.

An over-50s poetry group is inviting those who have recently returned from holiday to capture the essence of their travels in verse. “It was thought by the middle of September we might all have had a chance to have a little break and be inspired to write something about it,” said Alexandra Wilde of the Redbridge Rhymesters, who will meet at 11am on 13 September at Wanstead’s Allan Burgess Centre. Former BBC director offers family documentary service

A year of free tuition: local academy invites pupils to sit scholarship exam

An award-winning former BBC and ITV producer and director has established a unique business model that is offering local residents the chance to have their family story committed to film in a documentary. “I came up with the idea after discussing it with my elderly parents and asking them if they would like to have their stories recorded as a testament,” said Azeem Khan, who has been making programmes since the 1990s. The cost of the service will depend on the duration of filming and editing. Visit mof.media

Flights, which are now concentrated along the dotted line, used to be dispersed over a much wider area

Following the government’s recent approval to expand London City Airport, a residents’ group have renewed their request for donations to support a campaign to over turn the airport’s new flight paths, which have concentrated flights over certain areas of the capital, including Wanstead. “The campaign is costing us lots of money, but we still have lots more we’d like to do,” said a spokesperson for HACAN East. The expansion will not raise the cap on flight numbers, but it will allow larger planes to use the airport. Visit wavidi.co/lca

States dismemberment of

Local artist Kathy Taylor will be exhibiting her flask-topping, British Empire-inspired wax busts as part of this month’s Art Trail Wanstead. Here she explains how the project began

I

t all began when I came across an old vacuum flask in my mother’s cupboard. Found objects are often the starting point for my art, so I began wondering what this flask said to me. I felt that the Thermos flask expresses a certain kind of British concern: the need for the comfort and convenience of a hot drink when travelling. For some years, my art has looked at aspects of the British Empire and the tea trade, and this was the subject of a collaborative exhibition in the Dovecote at Valentines Mansion in 2010. Meanwhile, reading about Winston Churchill and his determination to hang on to the Empire, I found that he once said, “I will not preside over a dismemberment.”

I knew of the sculpture of Churchill outside the Manor House in Wanstead and decided to make a wax model of his head to put on the flask. Having a three-dimensional model (instead of just a photo) of his head to hand made this task easier. Using wax meant I could add colour and blend it with the base. Wax is a traditional but fragile modelling medium, stable in the cold but subject to change in the heat. This also seemed to say something about the British. Thus began my project to make visible part of the story of the British Empire: to create models of the first heads of state of all the ex-British colonies, together with some of the British politicians, explorers, monarchs and

September 2016 other key players in this history. As I discover ever more people who could take their place in my gallery of heads, I am constantly amazed by the extent of the power that Britain once wielded across the world. The impact of, and nostalgia for, the Empire is part of the British psyche and each country that was ever colonised bears the marks of the coloniser: its language, the nature of its development pattern, the wars that followed and, of course, the deep psychological effect on those who lived and live there or migrated to ‘the mother country’ post-independence. The theme of this year’s art trail is ‘Changes… turn and face the strange’ and as we prepare to leave the EU, it is good to reflect on the impact colonialism has had on the world and how it affects the way we think and behave towards other nations and immigrants to this country. Apart from Churchill, I have mainly used images from the internet to research likenesses. I try to get pictures of each person from all sides of their head and I look for appropriate Thermos flasks on eBay. To date, I have made 40 heads and sold four (which I have remade to keep the work complete).

Kathy will be displaying her work from 12 to 30 September at Wanstead Library with a meet the artist event on 23 September (6pm to 7.30pm) – visit kathytaylor.co.uk. For the next stage of her project Kathy is interested in hearing from anyone with family heritage from any ex-British colony – email ksmtaylor@me.com

What next? The project is not finished but I am hoping it will provide a starting point for discussion and reflection at this pivotal moment in our history.

Walking through time The Newham Striders is a walking group inextricably linked to Wanstead through its knowledgeable leader Stanley Silburn. In the first of a series of interviews, Jane Grell finds out about Granddad Woolcott

F

or the past 12 years, Stanley has led a walking group in Wanstead Park. Though in later life he moved to East Ham, he’s nonetheless an oral historian for this area, which is what makes him such a superb walk leader. Why is it called Newham Striders? Well, in 1998 NHS England wanted to help recovering heart attack patients walk their way back to health. Health practitioners, along with volunteers started the initiative. The first volunteers, from the London Borough of Newham led walks, first around Central Park, East Ham, then in Wanstead Park. Were you one of those first volunteers? No. I volunteered after the death of my wife for whom I had been caring. I increased the distance beyond Wanstead Park, deeper into Epping Forest. You are renowned as one of the most knowledgeable walk leaders around, but you live in Newham. How do you explain your knowledge of Wanstead Park? Funny you should ask that. I live in Newham but I am a Wanstead boy at heart! Oh, how so? Granny and Granddad Woolcott lived in a small cottage near Blake Hall Road by Wanstead Flats. From the age of seven I spent weekends and school holidays with them. Granddad was a baker and after coming home from work he would go on his customary walk, to clear his lungs of the flour, he said. I would skip alongside him along Bushwood and into Wanstead Park. We went wooding, that’s picking up fallen branches for burning in the kitchen range. This kept the cottage nice and warm and delicious meals on the boil.

I expect your granddad regaled you with stories of the forest. Trouble is, I drove him barmy with my nonstop questions. You see, I always wanted to know more, to know how things were made. I guess you were just being a kid. Yes, but it was more than that. My spelling was rotten. Reading and writing was always a big problem for me so I became a vehicle mechanic, which served me well both in civilian life and in the army. For someone as well read as yourself and with your fantastic memory, I’m surprised to hear that. Well, at the grand old age of 85, when I went for a job as a walking guide for the 2012 Olympics, I discovered I was dyslexic. At last I understood why I had become such an obsessive about making lists, keeping track of dates and events, no matter how small and why I had this burning desire to know more. As for the forest, my granddad did inspire a great affection for the people and places, which made it so interesting. The Newham Striders meet on Saturdays at 9am near St Mary’s Church, Wanstead.

Typical East Enders? Derek Morris will challenge all you thought you knew about the East End in the 18th century at a talk for the local branch of the East of London Family History Society this month

M

There were poor people living in London’s Sailortown on the north bank of the Thames, but it was also the home of merchants trading all over the world, bringing silk and tea from India and China, sugar and rum from the Caribbean, furs from Hudson Bay and timber from Scandinavia and Honduras to satisfy the growing demands of Londoners. They were also accepting government contracts to take convicts to Australia and were deeply involved in the slave trade. Other merchants played a major part in supplying Londoners with barrels, ropes, coal, glass, soap and candles, but the major industries were brewing and sugar refining, the latter mainly run by experts from Germany. With hundreds of years of links to the sea, the north bank of the Thames was home to ship chandlers, slopsellers, mastmakers and coal merchants. For the thousands of sailors arriving from all over the world, Sailortown provided them with lodgings, pubs and many places of entertainment. With drink readily available, there were frequent fights between sailors of different nations in the narrow streets and alleyways by the river. In my research, I have uncovered much about the role of women in maintaining their

y family have lived in the East End for nearly 300 years. It was my discovery that my family lived in Mile End opposite Captain James Cook, the famous explorer, that led me to conduct extensive research that challenges the popular understanding of the East End of London at any time up to the First World War as a uniformly bleak, often terrible, place of desperate poverty.

families while their men were away for long periods, sailing with the East India Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company. In addition to Captain Cook and other explorers, Sailortown was home to the Henniker family, major suppliers of timber to the Royal Navy, who had a town named after them in New Hampshire. Their neighbours included men who were major suppliers of food and drink to the Royal Navy, as well as hundreds of gunmakers living near the Tower of London. For family historians, it is John Suxspeach, a Quaker schoolmaster, who excites interest. Not only did he have an unusual name but he patented the first slide rule and had a library of over 700 books, certainly not your typical East Ender! Derek’s talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 28 September from 7.30pm (visitors: £1.50). For more information, call 020 8554 8414

1372 ...and counting Having counted over 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area so far this year, the Wren Wildlife Group have increased their target to 1,500. Tim Harris reports on the ongoing count

M

idsummer is a quiet time for birds. Literally, because with the frenzy of the breeding season over, they don’t need to advertise and defend territories in the way they do in April and May. It’s still quiet in August, but also exciting, because migration is underway once more. Swifts left en masse at the end of July and in the first week of August, though the odd straggler may still be seen even into September. Treecreeper

Early autumn migrants included a spotted flycatcher and a wheatear on Wanstead Flats, several common sandpipers in Wanstead Park and a couple of yellow wagtails. On 30 July our first treecreeper for two years popped up in Bush Wood. Since this species doesn’t breed in Wanstead Park, the bird had probably wandered into our area from somewhere further north in Epping Forest. Good news also concerned our great crested grebes which, having fledged one youngster, set out to produce another brood on Heronry Lake. A young peregrine falcon, the progeny of our local breeders, could sometimes be seen harassing crows over Wanstead Flats. And the reed warblers at Shoulder of Mutton pond also bred successfully. This summer certainly won’t be remembered as a classic for butterflies but there were a few purple hairstreaks, holly blues and small coppers on sunny days. It’s also nice to know that one of our recent colonists, the ringlet, continues to go from strength to strength, while arguably our rarest local breeder, the brown argus, is still just about hanging on. Just one was seen in the Old Sewage Works during the spring, but Bob Vaughan found and photographed one from a second brood on Wanstead Flats in August. Another addition to the year’s butterfly list was a migrant clouded yellow.

Meanwhile, Rose Stephens continued to find ‘new’ species of bees and hoverflies, with Manor Park Cemetery proving to be a very happy hunting ground. Just to give a flavour of the wealth of insect diversity in our area, astonishing totals of 110 kinds of bees and wasps and 103 hoverflies and flies have been recorded locally this year, mostly down to Rose’s efforts. And 250 different types of moths have been seen, in addition to 25 butterflies. At the time of going to press, August’s finds brought the total score to 1,372 (+157*), made up of 424 plants (+19*), 763 invertebrates (+133*), 118 birds (+2*), 38 fungi (+0*) and 29 miscellaneous (+3*). But what’s in store for the rest of the year? Autumn moths are always interesting and we are also hoping to do some spider survey work in Wanstead Park, and given that autumnal spiders are a different bunch from those of spring and summer, this could result in a few surprises. Plus, there are still plenty of plants to identify before the first frosts blanket our area. *Change from July's count.

A group of 15 local photographers will be displaying their work at an exhibition curated by Geoff Wilkinson at his Nightingale Lane gallery this month. y enjoyment in photography is being able to capture a certain moment. There may be something about an everyday place or event that is made different, maybe only fleetingly. For example, early one autumn morning I came across this sessile oak tree in Wanstead Park; the sun was lifting the mist so the moment was brief. I have had a camera for many years but like many people in Wanstead have benefited

greatly from Geoff’s guidance at his gallery on Nightingale Lane. Geoff is able to help you understand what you want from your camera and how to achieve it. There are always rules about how to take a picture, but they can all be broken. Seldom do you have the time to plan how you shoot. Often, it is an animal or bird that has no empathy with your hobby. You have to be ready for the mink in Wanstead Park or the sparrowhawk on the bird table.

eoff was recommended to me when I decided I wanted to take up photography again after having studied it at art college a long time ago. I spent one day with Geoff and it changed how I viewed photography. I specialise in wildlife photography with a particular focus on conservation issues around the globe – the world is such an inspirational place and I hope that, in a small way, I can help people to appreciate the natural world and want to help save it. In September 2013 I decided to embark on a 13-month photography project, volunteering at various animal charities and NGOs to understand the challenges facing the natural world today,

including bushmeat, poaching and palm oil plantations, and documenting the work they do. This image was taken in Cameroon at Ape Action Africa. I enjoy taking close-up images of wildlife. I like to convey their personalities so that people can make a connection with them. Now that I am back in the UK, I can still enjoy photographing wildlife being lucky enough to live near both Wanstead Park and Epping Forest. The exhibition will be on display at the Eightyfour Gallery, Nightingale Lane, Wanstead from 3 to 17 September. For more information, call 020 8530 1244

Better by tube Historian Nick Dobson invites you to join him on a virtual tour of London’s monuments and memorials at this month’s Wanstead Park Women’s Club meeting

I

© Eluveitie / Historic England

n a parody of Dr Johnson, the American novelist and travel writer Paul Theroux once wrote: “A person who is tired of London is not necessarily tired of life; it might be that he just can’t find a parking place.” With that in mind, perhaps the best way to search for London’s history and culture is to leave the car at home and take the Tube. And for my talk entitled An Underground Guide to Historical London, I will be bringing my virtual Oyster Card as I go in search of the capital’s monuments and memorials.

that flank the statue – damage still visible nearly a century later.

The illustrated presentation will start at Wanstead Station, travelling west to Monument to visit the monument to the Great Fire of London, which started 350 years ago this month, so it is an appropriate starting point. From there, we will visit some of London’s other well-known memorials, such as Nelson’s Column, Thorneycroft’s statue of Boadicea and Her Daughters at the western end of Westminster Bridge and Cleopatra’s Needle.

We will also search out some of the lesserknown London memorials, including the contemporary memorial to the world’s best-selling novelist Agatha Christie, which was erected in 2012 and is found close to Leicester Square station. We’ll also visit the statue to the Grand Old Duke of York, discover the fascinating story of St George’s Circus in Southwark and take in Great War memorials honouring fallen heroes and heroines, both famous and unsung.

Originally erected in Heliopolis in Egypt around 1450 BC, Cleopatra’s Needle has an amazing history. It was presented to Britain in the early 19th century, but not transported until 1877. The journey from Alexandria cost £10,000 and was certainly dramatic. The specially designed ship used for the transportation was reported lost in a storm in the Bay of Biscay. Six of the crew were drowned, but the abandoned vessel containing Cleopatra’s Needle was found four days later and eventually towed to the present location on the Thames Embankment, where it survived two world wars. It did suffer a near miss in September 1917 when a German bomb damaged one of the bronze Sphinxes

We will end our virtual journey back in Redbridge with a visit to the top of Salway Hill, Woodford Green to see the statue of Winston Churchill, which was unveiled on 31 October 1959 by Field Marshall Viscount Bernard Montgomery. Among the 5,000-strong crowd was Churchill himself, who gave a speech and complimented the sculptor.

At The Fringe The fourth Wanstead Fringe – our very own week-long, home-made festival – takes place this month, with a range of cultural events to enjoy at venues all around Wanstead. Jenny Burbage reports

This year’s celebration of events includes music, talks, comedy, drama lessons, storytelling, gardening, walks, yoga and ‘Restaurant Week’, in which participating local eateries will be offering great discounts. And this year, the Wanstead Fringe will again include a jumble trail (10 September), which will see local residents set up stalls outside their homes to sell unwanted items and meet their neighbours. A number of events will be held at the Cherry Tree Café on Woodbine Place, the new hub for this year’s Wanstead Fringe. At the time of writing, many events are still being arranged, but here are some of the confirmed highlights: Saturday 10 September: want to write a crime thriller? If you devour whodunnits and would love to write a crime novel yourself, here’s your chance to pick up the fundamentals with local crime novelist Anya Lipska (10.30 am to 12.30pm at the Cherry Tree Café). Monday 2 September: creative music A creative music session for our littlest fringegoers courtesy of Suzi Harnett of JingleBop (from 9.50am at the Cherry Tree Café). Wednesday 14 September: scent and scandal, an intriguing soiree Local resident Lucinda Gosling of Mary Evans Picture Library teams up with Lizzie Ostrom of Odette Toilette, author of A Century of Scents,

his year’s Wanstead Fringe will be held between 10 and 17 September, kicking off with the now almost legendary Duke Summer Street Party hosted by The Duke pub on Nightingale Lane from midday on day one and culminating in the Wanstead Festival on Christchurch Green on day eight.

Kinema: a Wanstead Fringe favourite

for an evening of heavenly scents and sordid secrets as guests are taken through the sights and smells of jazz age London (8pm to 10pm at The Duke). Wednesday 14 September: evening photography walk around Wanstead Join local photographer Geoff Wilkinson for a chance to capture Wanstead as it gets dark (7.45pm, meet at 84 Nightingale Lane). Thursday 15 and Friday 16 September: a double serving of comedy Featuring Terry Alderton (at Wanstead Golf Club and Eton Manor RFC). Saturday 17 September: Kinema A screening of Zootropolis (6pm in the gardens of Christ Church). We would like to say a big thank you to Petty Son and Prestwich for their ongoing support for the Wanstead Fringe. In

memory of . . .

In the fourth of a series of articles looking at the lives behind the names found on the memorials and plaques at St Mary's Church in Wanstead, EoLFHS members explore the life of Robert Sheaf, who died in 1894

R

obert Sheaf was different from most of those commemorated in St Mary’s. Not born into privilege or wealth, he was headmaster of the National School in Wanstead: his memorial was erected by his scholars. From censuses, we know that Robert was born in 1835 in Portsea, Hampshire, but we have found no record of his birth. According to his marriage certificate, his father was Robert Sheaf, a wheelwright, but we found no record of him anywhere else. In the 1841 census Robert was living with Sarah Sheaf, born 1775, and William Waterman, born 1789. No relationships were given, but parish records show Sarah Waterman married Thomas Sheaf, a shoemaker, in 1794 and they had several children. It’s probable that Sarah was Robert’s grandmother and William Waterman her brother. In the 1851 census Robert was a pupil teacher in the workhouse school in Portsea. In 1857 he became a teacher at the National School in Highfield in Hampshire. In the same year Robert married Jane Ivie, who also taught at the school. They were paid £70 a year as a joint salary, with coal in the winter. They stayed at Highfield until they moved to the National School in Wanstead in 1865, and Robert also became organist and choirmaster at St Mary’s. They had three children in Southampton and another two were born in Wanstead: Horatio and Robert. Sadly, Jane died on 14 July 1871, when little Robert was 17 months old; he went to live with Jane’s sister and her family in Bradford. Two years later Robert married Abigail Chapman, a teacher at his school. The three older children moved away, but Horatio stayed with his father and became a teacher in Wanstead. Horatio was described as ‘artistic, scholarly

and a proficient amateur astronomer’. In this he followed the example of the Reverend Pound, an earlier rector of this church and past Astronomer Royal. Robert’s father was probably one of Thomas and Sarah Sheaf’s sons. If so, their youngest son, Horatio Sydney Sheaf, was Robert’s uncle. Born in 1811, Horatio was a shoemaker, but he was also an artist and in 1838 he was asked to draw a local shoemaker, John Pounds. Pounds was disabled and scraped a living mending shoes, but he also used his workshop as a school for the very poorest local children, who were included in the painting that Horatio made from the drawing and sold. John Pounds died in 1839, but is remembered as a founder of the Ragged School Union. Robert Sheaf taught in Wanstead until his death in 1894. The respect of his students is clear from the memorial they erected. A booklet documenting the memorials in St Mary the Virgin Church, Overton Drive, Wanstead is being prepared by members of the East of London Family History Society (EoLFHS) and will be available for sale later this year. Angels in Wanstead

Ajay Rathod

A

few weeks ago, while trying out Le Petit Corner in Leytonstone, I asked Toby (the man working behind the counter) if he would keep his eyes out for people from our local community who do good (I’m always on the look out for new Angels and this is one of the ways I find them). He said he would, and a man sitting next to me said the person having coffee with him was a perfect example. John (that turned out to be his name) told me about his friend Ajay, who he first met when getting a haircut. Ajay runs KL Men’s Hair Salon on the right of Leytonstone High Road as you walk from the Green Man Roundabout towards McDonald’s. He had never met a nicer guy. Generous to a fault, John told me that when they first became friends he saw Ajay giving cash to any person who came into the salon with a deserving story. He took Ajay to one side and pointed out that getting a reputation as someone who gave even small change indiscriminately was not a good idea. Ajay is determined to use all of his tips for charity, so I got the impression that redirecting Ajay’s random acts of generosity to places where they’d give the most benefit was a rather hard job. When the two started talking enthusiastically about a planned fourto six week trip to India, where they would be working with various charities, I knew I had my man.

John has never been to India so they’re starting off in Mumbai before going to Gujarat. That’s where Ajay is from and where most of his family still live. Ajay showed me a video of their first scheduled charity and explained: “After Mumbai, we are going to Gujarat. My sister has helped us organise a visit to the Manau Trust in Politana City. It is a place where well over a hundred disabled orphans live. They have no family and it is hard for them. She went there on a volunteer day trip with her husband. People go to work in the kitchens or with the people, or they donate money or go to the market to buy food. We will go there and work with them and maybe bring clothes. Then there is another charity we want to help. We call it the Children’s Ashram and it is a place for orphan children in Rajkot City in Gujarat. We will go and work there, play with them and help. Also, every single city in Gujarat has a place for animals. People have animals but then they don’t have the money to feed them, so someone starts a farm and feeds and looks after all the animals and uses the money from milk – if they are cows or goats – to pay for the expenses. My sister and other local people are helping us find these places because it is important to help the ones that are not corrupt.”

To advertise, please call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

September 2016

Despite, I suspect, John’s best efforts, Ajay tops up his tip money with what he earns so that he can help more charities. With four sisters, one brother, his parents, cousins, aunts, seven nephews and three nieces, they know that they’ll have somewhere to sleep, which will enable them to spend more time and money helping the people who matter. Ajay, who lives 10 minutes’ walk from his salon, started it in 2011 and is planning a full refurbishment. He also spent some time telling me how much he thinks of his clients: “I have very good customers. They are very friendly and helpful people.” If you’d like to help Ajay and his charities, why not pop in for a trim or simply drop off some change before he goes to India in January next year?

In the 29th of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to Ajay Rathod KL Men’s Hair Salon is located at 887 High Road, Leytonstone. To nominate someone for a future Angels in Wanstead article, visit wavidi.co/aiw

T BU

Inheritance specialist Derek Lindsey – who will be offering advice to those attending this month’s Wanstead Festival – takes a look at the Inheritance Tax changes that are due to come into force next April

T

here is a limit to how much a person can pass on to beneficiaries free of Inheritance Tax when they die (including gifts made in the seven years before death). This limit is called the Nil Rate Band (NRB) and is currently set at £325,000. Anything above this is taxed at 40%. As spouses (or civil partners) can pass unlimited gifts to their surviving partner (with the exception of non-UK domiciled partners) free of Inheritance Tax, on first death the NRB is not often utilised to its full extent and any unused percentage of the NRB can be passed on to the surviving partner to be used on their death. For example, if a husband leaves £130,000 (40% of the NRB) to his children and the rest to his wife, on her death she will have 160% of the then NRB available to set against her estate. So, in effect, married couples currently have £650,000 they can pass on free of Inheritance Tax. The NRB has been unchanged since April 2009 and is currently not scheduled to change until April 2020, after which it will rise with inflation. A new Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB), which can only be used against a property that has been the main residence of the deceased, comes into effect from April 2017. This is initially going to be £100,000 and will rise by £25,000 a year until it is £175,000 in April 2020. From then on it will rise with inflation. The RNRB will also be transferable. This means that from April 2020, provided your house is worth at least £350,000, couples will have a joint total allowance of £1m before Inheritance Tax kicks in. The RNRB, however, is not straightforward and cannot be used by everyone. It can only be used if the house is passed directly to lineal descendants, but this includes, for example, stepchildren,

adopted children, foster children and spouses of deceased children. Passing directly means that (with certain exceptions) the house cannot pass from a trust or to a trust (even if the beneficiaries of that trust are all lineal descendants). A further complication is that the RNRB is reduced by £1 for every £2 that the deceased’s estate is worth more than £2m, and any normally exempt assets, such as qualifying business assets, are included when calculating the value of the estate for this purpose. So it is worth reviewing your financial arrangements and any Wills containing trusts to see what effect the new RNRB will have on your estate. This article can only give a brief overview of Inheritance Tax and the RNRB, so please take professional advice before doing any planning. Derek will be part of the Wanstead Business Network stall at the Wanstead Festival on 18 September to answer any inheritance planning questions. A student survival guide

University should be a memorable time of your life, but make sure it’s memorable for the right reasons and not because you have been a victim of crime, says PCSO Alan Winston

U

niversity can bring you a new home, new area, new friends and a newfound freedom. However, the same old crime is out there, so how you keep yourself and your belongings safe when you are out and about should not change because you are somewhere new. When it comes to your personal property, it is advisable to get contents insurance for your new residence, even though it is temporary, and to make a list of your possessions, including serial numbers. Also, try to mark your possessions with a UV pen and don’t take any belongings with you that you are not going to use. If you use a shared computer then remember to delete your history and, of course, do not save your passwords or bank details. You should always log out of websites that contain private information, including social media profiles, as you never know who is going to use the computer after you. It would be wise to get hold of a map of the campus and the local area. Also, do ask old students about the neighbourhood, including where is good to visit and where to avoid. Find out times of the night buses and the number of a licensed cab company. The same dangers apply when it comes to using unlicensed cabs, and the majority of attacks involve people who look lost or are taking a short cut in the early hours, so never walk home alone, no matter how brave you feel. On nights out don’t accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended. If you feel unusually drunk or unwell, ask a trusted friend to take you home. It can take only 15 minutes for the effects of a ‘rape drug’ to take effect, which can leave the victim extremely vulnerable and lead to memory loss (men are at risk too). Please look out for your friends and it is worth considering that door

staff have a duty of care and will call you a cab if you ask them to. Think about leaving before the venue’s closing time, as everyone being asked to leave at the end of the night is when trouble usually occurs. Robberies, commonly know as muggings, tend to happen more to men; however, women are more vulnerable to having their bags snatched. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t walk around with your phone and wallet on display. Also, avoid doing things that are going to distract you from what, or who, is around you. It is worth thinking about having an old phone and a ‘dummy’ wallet containing a small amount of money in it to hand over if someone mugs you. Remember, items can be replaced but you can’t, so don’t be a hero. University can be an amazing time, so long as you heed this advice and stay safe. You’ve worked hard and no doubt paid a lot to be there, so do everything you can to make it as positive an experience as possible. A police contact point is located at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. For more information, call 020 8721 2796

In March of this year, Wanstead resident Nicola Sharp-Jeffs was made a Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, enabling her to travel to the States to investigate ways of supporting financial abuse victims

I

have been back from the first leg of my Winston Churchill Fellowship travels for a couple of weeks now and am still on a high. I cannot overstate what an inspiring experience it was. Over a two-week period I travelled across New York, New Jersey and Texas and met 20 women working to address the issue of economic abuse in 14 different organisations. It soon became clear that their work takes two main forms. A number of specialist domestic violence projects have teamed up with financial capability experts to help women reclaim their economic freedom after leaving their abuser. It is common for women who experience economic abuse in their intimate relationships to be prevented from accessing financial income and to be given an allowance, the spending of which is tightly controlled. The abuser may exclude them from financial decisions and also run up debts in their name through financial fraud and/or coercion. Financial coaching and capability classes enable women to assess their financial situation after leaving. They are then supported to address any issues that exist. This may range from building up their confidence in handling everyday financial matters to liaising with banks and credit agencies about the debts they have been left with. The second and linked area of work is to help women achieve economic justice through identifying financial and legal remedies that address the control and exploitation they have experienced. This work is still in its infancy but I met with a number of committed legal professionals who are challenging court actions brought against women and seeking to have the debts written off. It was amazing to meet the passionate individuals driving these innovative responses.

Nicola on her travels in July

I believe there is real scope to adapt tools and resources to a UK context and pilot them with services. This is something I will now be looking to drive forward. I also realised upon my return that I had already gathered enough learning to fill a book on this issue and, together with Professor Adrienne Adams, an academic who I met on my travels, I am developing a proposal to do just that. The second leg of my trip to Australia starts in November. I shall be there for three weeks and have already lined up some great meetings. I am hoping this will include time in Tasmania, which has criminalised economic abuse. Given the new UK legislation on coercive and controlling behaviour, learning about the ways in which economic abuse can be criminally prosecuted will be really helpful. I will also be speaking about this new legislation at a seminar in Australia. It will be good to be able to give something back. A

pples and pears is cockney rhyming slang for stairs, of course, and there are so many more sayings that involve apples. Let’s go back to the 9th century, when the expression ‘apple of my eye’ was first used. Gazing into the eyes of a loved one you can see a tiny reflection of yourself in their pupils. In those days, the pupil was believed to be round and solid, and the apple was the most common spherical object to reference. The original version of ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ was coined by Caroline Taggart in Pembrokeshire in 1866 as follows: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his daily bread!” Pre-NHS days clearly, and not quite as catchy as later versions, but now science shows there’s some truth in the saying, having discovered the nutritional benefits of this original ‘fast food’. The Bible tells us that Adam offered Eve a fruit against God’s wishes, so it was regarded as forbidden. Which sort of fruit wasn’t mentioned and artistic licence deemed it an apple, partly because the Latin for apple (malum) is the same for evil. Then Adam swallowed the fruit and it stuck in his throat, causing a lump to appear, hence the term ‘Adam’s apple’.

Wanstead resident Mike Edwards has a passion for preparing food and drink from ingredients he has grown or foraged for himself. Here he reveals his recipe for pears poached in red wine in the fifth of a series of articles exploring unsung heroes of the fruit and veg world

September 2016 Pearly Kings and Queens have their origins in the costermongers of Victorian London, who sold costard apples around the streets. They added buttons to brighten their poor clothes and appointed a representative for each group of hawkers, who became a King or Queen, and who organised charitable events to help those who were worse off than themselves.

neatly stacked apple cart would ruin the vendor’s plans to sell them at market.

‘One bad apple spoils the whole barrel’. When ripening, apples give off ethylene gas, which promotes ripening of all nearby fruit very quickly. So if there is one ‘bad’ person in a group, the rest can easily be tainted by their way of thinking.

It’s no surprise that the word is used so widely. There are 7,500 known cultivars of apples, which originated in Central Asia thousands of years ago. Only a few are on sale in the shops, but Brogdales in Kent (brogdalecollections.org) house 2,200 of them. Similarly, from ancient origins, the pear has 3,000 cultivars in existence and their most famous expression, of course, is ‘to go pearshaped’, which has many possible origins, but all allude to the unsuccessful attempt to make a perfect circle. But this pear shape helps create this month’s delicious dessert: pears poached in red wine.

‘Upset the apple cart’, came from the Roman saying ‘upset the cart’, which referred to plans being spoiled. It was updated to the modern saying in the UK in the 1700s, when an overturned, previously

Across the Atlantic, the Big Apple has nothing to do with fruit, but refers to the many racecourses that existed around New York in the 1920s, as the young stablehands who invented the phrase regarded the area as a place to make a lot of money.

Mike’s recipe for poached pears: zz Cut off the base of fat-bottomed pears, preferably comice, at a jaunty angle. Peel them, keeping the stalks intact, and remove the pips. zz Sit the pears in a saucepan and cover with red wine. Add some cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Simmer for about 20 minutes until just soft through. zz Remove the pears and simmer the remaining liquid until syrupy, adding some sugar if desired. zz Once cooled, serve as shown with the ever-popular elderflower ice cream. Excess apples can be donated to Hawkes in Forest Gate in exchange for cider – visit wavidi.co/spareapples © Mike Edwards

Pb h io ot o g rap h y g r a p h y In the 17th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Colin Drummond recalls how losing a camera in the Seventies led him to explore a variety of equipment

I

I bought my first camera from a shop in the Pioneer Market in Ilford, a Praktica LTL3 film camera – a really solid piece of kit capable of taking a few knocks – and then added a Vivitar 200mm telephoto lens, which I thought was brilliant. A couple of my friends were also interested and we often used to spend weekends out and about taking photos. I particularly remember taking photos at Silverstone, speedway and rock concerts, along with the more standard family, countryside and seaside type shots. Life then became busier and I gradually had less time for photography as studying, work and family demands took centre stage. I did, however, keep an interest and made the move to digital photography with an Olympus point-and-shoot camera, followed by the camera I currently use, a Canon EOS 450D. Moving on 40 years and I am now in the first few weeks of retirement and have time on my hands. In preparation for my retirement, I decided a few months ago that I would rekindle my interest in photography and joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society. I thought this would help me improve my techniques and take more ‘good’ shots. The people there are really

first became interested in photography in the 1970s when I lost my dad’s prized Kodak Instamatic camera whilst on a school trip to the Albert Hall. I spent the next few days trying to replace it with an identical model, unsuccessfully as it turned out as it was, by then, defunct. Trawling around the numerous camera shops in Holborn and talking to staff did open my eyes to the variety of equipment available and how they could give you more control over the shots you were taking.

friendly and you can learn a lot by just having an informal chat. I think the main thing I have learned so far is that it doesn’t all end once you’ve uploaded the photos to your computer; there is so much more you can do to improve them using software like Adobe Lightroom. I am now going through all my digital images (and will attempt to digitise all my old film photos in time) and am finding that some that were over or underexposed but were otherwise OK can be fixed and, as if by magic, you have a great photo. The tiny village of Aston Cantlow in Warwickshire was the unlikely setting for an 18-year legal battle that still has implications for house buyers today. David Wershof of local solicitors Wiseman Lee explains

T

he bucolic Warwickshire village of Aston Cantlow, with its half-timbered village hall and ivy-clad inn, was the setting for a legal battle that spanned two decades, the results of which still have profound implications for anyone buying property in England and Wales. At issue was the right of a parochial church council (PCC) to enforce chancel repair liability on a couple who had inherited a village farm. The landmark case was Aston Cantlow PCC vs Wallbank (2002), and although Mr and Mrs Wallbank fought the case all the way to the High Court, they were ultimately found liable to contribute a sum in the region of £200,000, with the case believed to have cost them a similar sum in costs. Chancel repair liability is an ancient law that benefits around 5,200 pre-Reformation churches (those built before 1536) in England and Wales. It is a long-standing and legally enforceable liability to repair or contribute towards the cost of chancel repair of a parish church, the chancel being that part of the church containing the altar. The law enables a PCC to require owners of land that previously formed part of a rectory to contribute towards the cost of such repairs. This land is not always located in close proximity to the church in question – the Wallbank’s farm was a quarter of a mile away – and the liability could stretch for up to 30 miles because of the way in which ancient parish boundaries were drawn. The position was supposed to have been clarified by a provision in the Land Registration Act 2002. The Act provided that new owners of land would only be bound by chancel repair liability if a PCC had registered the liability with the Land Registry before 13 October 2013. This was intended to be a cut-off date, after which a purchaser would

receive title to their land free of liability if it had not been protected by a notice in the register, but the Land Registry themselves took a different view. Conscious of the potential for expensive disputes, the Land Registry have continued to enter notices on the register, even for purchases which were completed and registered after the October 2013 threshold. This leaves property lawyers and their clients in a state of considerable uncertainty. Since October 2013, the position has been ambiguous and without precedent, with any land transaction in England and Wales potentially affected. In 2006 the Law Commission proposed that the liability should be abolished, and in July 2014 the first reading of the Chancel Repairs Bill proposed by Lord Avebury took place in the House of Lords. Unfortunately, further readings of the bill were put on hold until after the 2015 General Election and it would appear that there are no current plans to revive it. In the meantime, purchasers of property will have to continue to take out chancel repair insurance to protect themselves and their heirs from potentially ruinous future liabilities. 150 not out!

To mark the 150th anniversary of Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club, former player and umpire Mike Mead has published a book charting the club's history. In the fourth of a series of extracts, Mike recalls some of the professionals who have played for the club

A

t the outset it must be made clear that Wanstead as a club has never paid a player. We have been fortunate that many former and current professionals have played and helped immensely with the club’s success, often despite receiving tempting offers of remuneration elsewhere. Les West was a delightful man who had been on the Essex County staff for several years in the 1920s without ever really breaking through. He played just five first-class games – as a young professional batsman he found his place always going to an amateur who happened to be available. Les played for Ilford and then for Wanstead and on retirement from work threw himself into coaching young talent at Overton Drive in the early 1970s. He set up a coaching scheme that many senior Wanstead members remember with affection. Peter Lindsey had six years on the Essex staff from 1959 but only played one first-class match. He joined Wanstead at the County’s suggestion in 1962 and was a vital member of the first XI as an off-spinner who could also bowl medium-pace and bat effectively, until at the beginning of our half-century employment took him to Scotland. Peter Spicer was a controversial character – a cricketer of immense talent but cursed with

a wayward temperament and a tendency to ‘self-destruct’. Ultimately, the latter trait led to his death in tragic circumstances on the Epping New Road in August 1969. He joined Wanstead in 1966 and, when in the mood, could destroy any opposition attack. When bowling left-arm in three styles was added to his batting, he could and should have been England’s version of Gary Sobers. Peter still has a place in the record books as the only player to get off the mark in first-class cricket with a six (against Somerset in May 1962). In the 1970s we secured the services of leftarm pace bowler Gary Sainsbury. He was an integral member of John Gray’s all-conquering XI, but for Essex was always in the shadow of John Lever and left to join Gloucestershire and settle in the West Country. Steve Smith, an Australian professional on a scholarship, had part of the 1982 season in John Gray’s team before returning home to represent his country when a number of players had defected to Kerry Packer’s World Series. He subsequently threw in his lot with the Australian rebel tours of South Africa in the mid-1980s. He was a good batsman whose career ended prematurely due to injury. Chris Gladwin was still at school when he joined Wanstead and was always destined for a professional career. A stylish and powerful

September 2016 games with Essex that he needed and this, added to the fallout from the Westfield affair, caused him to head for Derbyshire, where he has established himself as a first XI regular. Tony Palladino

James Foster

left-hander who could also bowl effectively at club level he promised much and in the early 1980s good judges tipped him as a future test batsman. In 1984, in his first full season, he scored 1,396 first-class runs, but the bright early promise faded and at the end of 1987 he and Essex parted company. Chris regularly returns to Overton Drive to take the field in Cricket Week. James Foster, who came to Wanstead while at Forest School, was another destined for a successful professional career and one of the great mysteries of cricket is why his time as a test match player ended so soon. The author saw him represent England against Australia at the MCG on Boxing Day 2002 and a local member, hearing the Pommie accent, said: “Well, you guys have got a wicketkeeper for the next 10 years.” Who would have believed this would be his final test? England’s loss has been Essex’s gain and James has never lost his affection for Wanstead. Mervyn Westfield grew up with the club and was another for whom a successful professional career beckoned. He gained age-group recognition for England, broke into the Essex first XI and, whenever available, played for Wanstead as a talented all-rounder. His fall from grace, criminal conviction and suspension from the game has been well documented elsewhere and this is not the place to rake over the coals. He has always had the full support of the club. Tony Palladino was another home-grown product bound for a county career. TP, as he was known, somehow never got the run of

For a short while the club had the services of Mohammad Akram, an itinerant Pakistani professional who played intermittently in Jon Hinton’s side. Akram played for Northants, Essex, Sussex and Surrey before heading for League Cricket in the North East. Maurice Chambers is a wholehearted fast bowler and useful lower-order batsman, who throughout his time on the Essex staff played whenever he could for Wanstead. Maurice left in 2014 to join Northants. Now the Wanstead production line has produced Kishen Velani, who looks to have a bright future with Essex and hopefully beyond. An elegant batsman, Kishen played for the England under-19s when only 16 years old and made his Essex debut at the age of 19 in 2014. The Velanis are a true Wanstead family with Kishen’s brother Mahesh and cousin Nikunj both playing for the club. Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club 18662016 by Mike Mead is available from the club, located on Overton Drive, Wanstead, E11 2LW (price: by donation).
