Welcome... Every month, I start with a blank canvas. The local residents and their stories are my inspiration. The knowledge, creativity and passion of the community are the colours that decorate these pages. A locality rich in history are the staples piercing through all that exists today. The tales of modern achievements add texture and depth, dappled with the light of our tranquil surrounds, picturesque in their own right. Every month, the blank canvas develops a life of its own, nurtured and supported by many. Then unveiled to its discerning audience, to be viewed, enjoyed, explored and perhaps criticised… framing is optional. This may be a somewhat – or heavily – inflated self-view, but it is hard to fight the artistic analogies when one is stricken with art trail fever. And it is catching. Viewing work ahead of the trail is always a privilege and even more so to be able to present some of those works here. But the true buzz of the trail comes not from the magazines, the brochures or the posters, it comes from the trail itself and the creators and coordinators behind it. To experience that buzz one simply needs to follow the trail and see where it leads. Those with a creative disposition are sure to be inspired to create – those without are sure to simply be inspired. Of course, it's not just the art trail that is bringing cultural stimulation to Wanstead this month. The annual Wanstead Festival and its preceding week of Wanstead Fringe make September's diary entries as diverse as they are popular, catering for just about every conceivable interest. But even if the art doesn't inspire you and even if your interests are so obscure that this month's line-up of events fails to inspire any involvement, then I challenge anyone not to take inspiration from the very fact that all these offerings exist. "Many people are good at talking about what they are doing, but in fact do little. Others do a lot but don't talk about it; they are the ones who make a community live." (Jean Vanier) Lee Marquis, Editor

The 'love-up' Wanstead challenge: make your mark A giant interactive mapping project will take place during this month's environmentthemed art trail, which will see a 2m x 3m map of Wanstead drawn on the wall of the trail's pop-up shop at 149 High Street. Visitors will be encouraged to show their love for the area by 'doing nice things for the environment and each other' and then to add a symbol to the wall map to show what they did and where they did it. Wanstead's independent retailers will be hoping to capitalise on this month's range of community events, which will increase footfall in the area. To make the most of this, businesses and shops from the High Street will be showcasing their products and services at the Wanstead Festival on 13 September. During the event, a series of stalls will line the High Street from Wanstead Tube station down to Boots, giving each business an opportunity to highlight what they have to offer.

Actor Stephen Lewis, famous for playing Blakey in the TV show On the Buses, died peacefully last month at the Cambridge Nursing Home in Wanstead. Born in 1926, Lewis began his career as a merchant seaman before making his West End theatre debut in 1958. According to the manager of the nursing home, during his final years Lewis would still deliver his famous lines from On the Buses – which ran for 74 episodes – including: "I'll get you for this, Butler" and "Get these buses out, Butler".

Walking on ice: reliving the River Thames frost fairs

Thames Frost Fair by Thomas Wyke

A weatherman will relive the frost fairs of the River Thames and explain why it doesn't ice over any more at this month's meeting of the East of London Family History Society. The last London frost fair was in 1814 and in spite of the severe winters of 1895, 1947 and 1963 the Thames

has never frozen here again. Ian Currie – who can be heard on BBC Radio Surrey and Sussex – will give an illustrated talk at Wanstead Library from 7pm on 23 September about the activities that took place on the ice and the people involved. Call 020 8508 2403

Conservation panel

Animal welfare

An attempt to reverse the decision to remove Redbridge Council's Conservation Advisory Panel (CAP) has failed. Councillor Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: " There are still robust methods in place for dealing with conservation as part of the planning process… By removing the CAP we not only save around £3,000 to £6,000 every year, but we also free up around a month and a half of valuable officer time that can be refocused on core activities, such as dealing with planning applications for residents."

Redbridge Council has appointed a new Animal Welfare Champion in a pilot project supported by the RSPCA. Councillor Varinder Singh Bola, who represents Cranbrook ward, will receive training from the RSPCA to deal with animal-related issues. "I am very pleased to have been given the chance to fulfil this very important role. As well as working with the RSCPA inspectors, I will also be looking into the animal welfare policy and giving residents any animal related guidance and advice that is needed," said Councillor Bola.

Attempts to reduce Blake Hall Road gas works disruption

National Grid has agreed to increase the number of site operatives and to have them work for longer hours in an attempt to alleviate the traffic problems caused by gas works on Blake Hall Road, Wanstead. The work to replace 100-year-old gas pipes started in July

and is scheduled to continue until the end of October. "We have held site meetings with National Grid… and we plan to continually monitor the project to try and reduce its impact on our roads," said Councillor Jas Athwal, Leader of Redbridge Council.

We are a friendly, professional, experienced salon offering a wide range of manicure, pedicure, hair dressing, facials, waxing, massage, electrolysis and much more. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and fulfilling our client’s needs. Recently, Katie Hopkins chose Click Beautique in Wanstead to pamper herself with the famous Geisha Facial, nowadays know as the “celebrity facial”. This ancient treatment was enhanced by a spa in New York. Famous celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Victoria Beckham and many others have enjoyed this unique treatment. Geisha Facial: Japanese geishas, who are renowned for their clear, porcelain-like complexions, have used bird excrement for centuries as a cleanser. It is thanks to an enzyme in the droppings called guanine that the skin is left clean, smooth and supple. The excrement produces the same results as a light acid peel, but it causes none of the redness or the need for recovery time. There’s no burning sensation and no man-made chemicals. Because of this, the facial can be done on the day of a red-carpet appearance or an important party. It’s also safe for pregnant women to use.

Each year, Art Trail Wanstead aims to introduce something out of the ordinary for visitors. This month, it is able to bring a whole raft of displays and activities with its own pop-up space and visitor centre on the High Street. Donna Mizzi reports

T

here's a buzz of excitement and frenetic planning down at the sixth Art Trail Wanstead. For the first time, the trail has its own pop-up trail centre at 149 High Street (near The George) – thanks to businessman James Long.

Saturday 5 September Start the trail at the pop-up centre, 149 High Street Wanstead, with recycling activities, a mind map and art jumble bargains. Contributions of art and craft goods and materials welcomed.

It means the organising Art Group Wanstead can add a wish-list of events to the already busy trail line-up from 5 to 20 September. And members can do more to raise awareness of our effect on the planet through this year's 'We are the Environment' theme. Trail organiser Kathy Taylor, who was determined to track down an empty shop, says: "We can now do so much. The centre will host some community participation art, a 'Love-up' Wanstead mind map and further thoughtprovoking projects. We are also planning a range of workshops, talks, demonstrations and films that are linked to art or the environment. Look out for events listed on the trail website and in the shop window."

Sunday 6 September Art trail stall at Wanstead Farmers' Market. Try your hand at yarn bombing to create street art for the trail. From 11am to 3pm.

The centre, generally open each day and on many evenings, will also provide trail guidance for visitors to the art trail.

Wednesday 9 September Meet the artists. A number of businesses at the top end of the High Street will stay open until 8pm. See the art and talk to the artists. Drinks and nibbles available at some venues. The upstairs of the Manor House, filled with art, will have artists present until 9pm. Saturday 12 September Wanstead House Community Association open day. Find out about classes and activities at the centre. Includes a free children's portrait studio run by the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society. From 10.30am to 1.30pm.

Weathering the Blitz In the first of a series of articles marking the 75th anniversary of the start of the Blitz in Wanstead, weather enthusiast Scott Whitehead offers a meteorological-based review of events in September 1940

O

ver a period of eight months – from September 1940 to May 1941 – around 450 bombs were dropped on Wanstead and neighbouring Woodford, killing 129 people and injuring 194. The summer of 1940 had been varied; a warm and dry June was followed by a cool and wet July. The weather turned much warmer and drier in August; just 2mm of rain fell during the whole month. Only one August has been drier since and in 1940 parts of London went 46 days without any measurable rain. As people got on with the Phoney War, events in Europe must have seemed a world away. This all changed on 28 August 1940 when two high explosive bombs and one incendiary were dropped in Woodford Green. Damage was light and only one minor injury was reported, but the event brought home to people that the war was now on their doorsteps. The opening week of September saw the hottest spell of the season. But summer, and the relative peace Britain had enjoyed since the announcement of hostilities a year earlier, came to an abrupt end on 7 September 1940. It had been a beautiful day with wall-to-wall sunshine – the eighth day running the thermometer had reached over 70°F. Many people were outside when, at 5pm, the drone of the first Luftwaffe aircraft could be heard passing to the south of the borough. By 6pm, the skies were empty but all Thameside blazed. The bombers struck again after 8pm, guided to their smoking targets of the docks and the East End. As the sun began to set, a red glow in the sky to the west and south-west gave the impression that all London was burning. Wanstead and Woodford, so far unscathed, sent rescue parties to East Ham to help. Within a few hours, however, the area itself became the target of bombing when, at 1.25am, the first of three high explosive bombs fell in the Grove Park area behind the High Street. the Shrubbery flats collapsed. A row of shops in the High Street, what is now Boots, was badly damaged by the third bomb, which was dropped along with 500 incendiaries. The explosions left eight dead in the immediate vicinity and some 50 people were injured across the two boroughs during the raid. Wanstead and Woodford had suffered less damage than other parts of London and a decision had been made to accept 2,000 evacuees from the East End. The next day was a dull day, 10 degrees cooler, and probably reflected in the public mood. The bombings went on nightly through September. The manner of peoples' lives is summed up in this entry from the diary of a local man: "Night of September 11-12: Terrific AA barrage ended about 5am. To bed at 5.40. At 6.20 phone call saying office hit and we were to work at – . Left home at 7am. Settled down in strange building with difficulty, and grew so overwhelmingly sleepy that (having been awake for five nights) fell asleep standing up." But, two days later: "Saturday 14th – left office two o'clock and spent two hours gardening. Beautiful autumn afternoon." The author's inspiration for this article comes from the book It Happened Here by Stanley Tiquet, which is available for loan and purchase from libraries in Redbridge.  

Wanstead Flats has gained the enviable reputation as one of London's best autumn locales for migrant birds. Tim Harris investigates in the seventh of a series of articles exploring local biodiversity

M

igrant birds fit neatly into two categories: birds seen flying over, sometimes in big numbers, and those that have stopped off en route to their winter domiciles; they may stick around for a few minutes, a few days or a week. Autumn migration starts for some as early as July, but it peaks from mid-August to late October and it peaks for different birds at different times. The first half of September is usually one of the most exciting periods. The first of the southbound favourites are wheatears, not quite so crisplyplumaged as in their spring finery, but still a delight to behold with their brilliant white rumps. Many of the migrants of August and September are skulkers. Three years ago, I remember watching a seemingly empty hawthorn for an hour. You may well wonder why! Well, I was pretty sure there was a wryneck – a rare, cryptically plumaged ant-eating bird – hidden within. During the course of that 60 minutes, the 'empty' bush produced pied and spotted flycatchers, common and lesser whitethroats, a willow warbler, chiffchaffs, blackcaps and a redstart, all migrants fattening up before the next long stage of their journey to Africa. Oh yes, the wryneck did put in a very brief appearance, too. The presence of food – berries and insects in huge numbers – is one of the main reasons for the magnetic attraction of Wanstead Flats. Areas of brambles, hawthorn, oak and broom are alive with the food the birds need before their calorie-burning journey. These plants also offer great protection from predators. But another factor is at play. Many of the birds I've mentioned migrate by night, sometimes starting off with quite short journeys before building up to the 'big one'. Imagine you were one of these birds flying south over west Essex at night. The dark of Epping Forest would contrast with the constellations of lights to the east and west. You would follow the dark wedge until you reached its southern apex – where it came up against the lights of Newham. If you were a bit tired or it was near dawn, you would break your journey there

Wryneck

– on Wanstead Flats. The weather also plays a big role in where migrants break their journey: rain in the early hours sometimes persuades birds to interrupt their flight earlier than they otherwise would have done. These mornings are often the best for night-movers. Not all migration happens at night. Swallows and martins, pipits, skylarks, pigeons, fieldfares and redwings are some of the diurnal travellers. And this is where Wanstead Flats scores again – because you can see a lot of sky and, consequently, a lot of visible migration. Swallow and martin movement over our part of the world reaches its peak in September. Sometimes more than 1,000 are counted in a single day. Pipits keep going through September and October and the latter is definitely the month for thrush movement. On some days, hundreds of thrushes are counted by the 'vis-miggers', the Wanstead Birders who gather in the middle of the Flats pretty much every morning in autumn. Visible migration in autumn is best when there's an easterly blowing and visibility is murky. Other species on the move by day include finches, birds of prey, waders and short-eared owls. Then by early November it has more or less petered out for another year. For more information about wildlife in the local area, visit wrengroup.org.uk

Masterpiece mystery An upcoming event will offer further insight into the ongoing story of Wanstead's masterpiece mystery – a painting that has hung over the altar at St Mary's Church for over a century. Penelope Garlick reports

L

ast year, we told how the painting – which has dominated the altar of St Mary's Church since 1890 – was taken down during the recent repainting of the church (Redbridge's only Grade I listed building) and sent to the Courtauld Institute of Art in Somerset House for assessment and possible conservation. Now, further research into the painting's history, and initial assessment work at the Courtauld Institute, have confirmed the painting is a contemporary studio copy of a work called The Entombment of Christ by the 17th-century Italian painter Il Guercino. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was born in 1591 and nicknamed Guercino (the squinter) because of the cast in his eye. One of the most sought-after painters of his time, his patrons included Pope Gregory XV, Maria de' Medici of France and Charles I of England. His most striking compositions are still considered among the greatest Italian Baroque masterpieces, alongside those of Caravaggio, Cortona and Bernini. The research at the Courtauld Institute was carried out by an American postgraduate student. She looked at the type of paint used, the thickness of paint and the brushwork, and determined it was painted at the same time as the original, although the quality and thickness of paint were not consistent with work by Guercino himself. She compared the placing of the figures in the original, which now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago, with those in the Wanstead painting, and concluded the two are so closely aligned that the copy must have been made directly from the original. Pippa Balch, a lecturer in the conservation of easel paintings and supervisor of the assessment project, is coming to St Mary's on Thursday 1 October to give a talk on the research techniques used on the painting and the conclusions drawn from them. This is a rare chance to hear from an internationally recognised expert.

The research project included assessing what would be required to restore the painting and identifying firms who could do this. The painting is now with one of those firms, the Painting Conservation Studio, to start the restoration, but the work needed will cost £30,000. The parish of Wanstead does not have this money, so fundraising has begun to restore Wanstead's very own work of art. You can contribute by direct donations or by attending fundraising events, including opera evening Glamour on the Green on Saturday 12 September at Christ Church or a concert of vocal music in St Mary's Church on Saturday 26 September, as well as the talk next month. St Mary's Church crypt will also be open to the public on 19 and 20 September – the first time for five years. Donations or ticket purchases can be made in person at: Christ Church on Saturday mornings between 9.30am and 12.30pm, or after 9.30am Sunday services; or at St Mary's Church after 11am Sunday services. Tickets for Glamour on the Green on 12 September start from £20; tickets for the vocal music concert on 26 September and the talk on 1 October cost £10. M

y first taste of cider was when I was 14, behind the ruins of Colchester Priory Church. The taste was evil, as were the effects, and I got a 'friendly' lecture from Dad about the pitfalls of alcohol, but he got it in the neck from Mum for being too lenient! I was born in Colchester in 1982 and attended St Benedict's Catholic comprehensive. Having a very competitive nature got me into a couple of scrapes, but then I channelled that energy into sport, football in particular, having trials for Colchester FC and playing non-league football until I was 19. At sixth form college I met my future wife Hannah, then went to Manchester University to study history, especially the way suicides were handled in a social context in the Victorian era! I was fascinated and looked into other aspects of life on the streets in late 19th-century London, discovering that ginger beer was a prevalent street drink, with the ginger coming from Jamaica and gin being added to make it more interesting. I came out of uni with a 2:1, but absolutely no direction. So, still loving football, I went towards sports law and almost trained to be a sports agent. Alcohol 'saved' me when I joined the enormous brewery AB Inbev, where I studied all aspects of brewing and marketing. I moved to

Greene King and witnessed the growth of the entrepreneurial craft ale market spread from Belgium to the USA, then the UK. That market was very competitive and Hannah and I were experimenting at home in Wanstead with a natural alcoholic ginger beer. That's a fairly niche market, but we believed in our product and took it to friends' pubs in Hackney, where it proved really popular. A name had to be put on the bottles and that's when the interest in London Victorian street history came in. The sellers of such products were called Street Hawkers, who were the working class entrepreneurs of the day, so Hawkes it had to be. Two years after we started hawking our wares around town, we are now supplying through the likes of Ocado. Now we are turning our attention to the mass of unused apples in London. We buy apples rejected by supermarkets just because they have a dimple in the wrong place and blend in apples donated by good folk locally to produce a medium dry natural cider we call Urban Orchard. If you bring us your spare apples, we will give you back some cider. Then, as we grow and create a network across London, we will be giving some of our profits to charity, especially to help people on the streets. We believe that being in business isn't just about making big profits. We want to make a difference in society.

Parent vs child What happens when a parent disinherits a child? Beverley Browne, a partner in the wills and probate department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explores the issues and looks at the rising trend of will disputes

T

he recent decision in the Court of Appeal in the case of Ilott vs Mitson received a lot of press coverage and has led many people to question whether their own wills are watertight. This was the case where a mother specifically disinherited her only daughter and left the whole of her £500,000 estate to three animal charities with which she had little or no connection. The daughter sued and, after a 10-year legal fight, was awarded £164,000 from her late mother's estate. The Court of Appeal decision may still be subject to an appeal to the Supreme Court. Mrs Ilott's claim was brought under the 1975 Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act, a 40-year-old statute that was intended to help protect the close dependents of someone who has died. What this law brought into effect, and what the Ilott case has particularly highlighted, is that since 1975 in England and Wales your freedom to bequeath what you want to who you wish might be questionable. In Scotland, this has been the case for far longer. However, it does not always follow that the courts will overturn a provision in a will that fails to leave money to a particular descendant. A properly drawn-up will that specifically disinherits a child will continue to be enforced unless the child can demonstrate pressing financial needs. Surviving spouses, on the other hand, will nearly always have a valid claim if they are disinherited or not left a reasonable provision. The reasons why someone would want to disinherit their children are many and varied, but interestingly, several high-profile individuals – Sting, Lenny Henry, Nigella Lawson and Simon Cowell, among others – have recently said that they will not be passing on their fortunes to their children, with the main reason being that they want their children to make their own way in

the world, and the prospect of inheriting their parents' wealth is a disincentive to doing so. There has been a significant increase in will disputes in recent years, and although every case is different, it is not hard to see why. Firstly, families are a lot more complicated than they were 40 or 50 years ago. Higher rates of divorce over recent decades has created second and third families, where descendants cannot agree on how an estate should be divided. Secondly, the rise in home ownership and the surge in house prices has meant that even people who have always lived modestly may have something worth fighting over when they die. Add to this the fact that people are living longer and often experiencing years of mental decline and vulnerability and the potential for disputes is obvious. Although the principle of freedom of testamentary disposition – the right to leave what you want and to whom you want – remains largely intact, the Ilott case is a reminder that there is no substitute for taking sound legal advice when it comes to drawing up your will. In the 19th of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to Mike Edwards

"I

t's interesting to experience an interview from this side," said Mike Edwards, who Wanstead Village Directory readers will know well from his Wanstead Stories series. What you might not know is the host of other things he does for the community and environment. I thought it was about time to set that right. "My green-ness doesn't fit my background at all," explains Mike, who was once a manager at Coutts & Co, the 'Queen's Bank'. One day, having a massage started a slow change in his outlook and lifestyle as it signalled the conscious awareness of alternative health. He loved massage, so when he was made redundant in 1991, he decided to train as a sports masseur. He felt the career choice was justified when, in the first six months, he received more thanks than over the entire previous 22 years in the bank. Years later, he joined a Pilates class with his partner, Kathy. When his Pilates teacher suggested he should train as an instructor, he felt he lacked self-confidence. "The idea of standing up in front of everyone scared the hell out of me." But he trained and qualified over 10 years ago and it's an aspect of his life that gives much joy. He's clearly still surprised and delighted that most of his work now comes from referrals. Unsurprising though, since it's also clear that helping people and reducing their pain is very much more important to him than the money he gains. His political views developed around the same time: "Working with people who appreciate what you do makes you look more widely. Mike Edwards listen and think better. That moved me politically left." He got more involved in supporting the campaigns he believed in. His first march was in protest of what was happening in Iraq. Now he is on the campaign trails, signs and supports petitions to help protect wildlife, help the underprivileged and he works as much as he can to save the local and national environment. Although taking an allotment was Kathy's choice, Mike has become an enthusiastic gardener who is happy to pass on some of the excess produce that his green fingers create to good causes. Through doing this, he says: "I realised if you give unconditionally and unselfishly, something positive comes back. Sometimes from the most unexpected source". He set up allotment 'drinks' at the local pub to swap ideas and seeds, then joined Wanstead Transition. This environmentallyfriendly group was about using less fossil fuel, better recycling, green ideas, reducing car use, teaching how to grow food, mending rather than buying new, sharing tools and more. When the group folded, he kept the network going with his allotment friends. He still both practices and talks about all the principles, and was pleased to tell me of one of his Pilates clients who moved from disposable nappies to cloth ones on hearing of the formers' cost to the environment. Practicing what he preaches, he and Kathy often go scrumping (for him this means the legal acquisition of fruit that isn't owned by others). He relates with delight that their last expedition got them enough

plums to make 14 jars of jam and chutney. Mike also flies as little as possible, preferring train travel, cycles rather than drives, calls himself a 'recycling maniac', has solar panels on the roof, three waterbutts, and makes teas from their own garden herbs. Mike says: "The High Street is really important to me. I stay away from corporations and multinationals as much as possible and I love promoting local causes." That's why he took five years to write and shoot photographs for a book of the stories of local 'venerable' people (his word, not mine). Shelf Life E11:E4:E18 still sells well and is extended through his monthly articles in this publication on businesses new to the district. A while after the interview, Mike sent another warmly enthusiastic email: "Sitting in the garden eating 'scrumped' elderflower homemade ice cream. Mr Whippy eat your heart out!" Even though I've only touched the surface of what he does for the community, this makes such a lovely picture that I think it's best to leave him there. Shelf Life E11:E4:E18 by Mike Edwards is available from 84 Gallery, Time for Tea and Bennetts of London. Weed out the growers PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team explains how to identify if you're living near a cannabis factory

H

ow can you tell if the house next door is a cannabis factory? In truth, it's not easy, because they are becoming increasingly sophisticated. But it might be worth reporting to police the next time you say to yourself: "it might be nothing, but‌!" Most factories are found in rented homes. If you are a landlord, make sure you are conscious of the following signs: tenants that are sub-letting; tenants that pay cash months in advance; or quiet tenants who never contact you to raise any issues. Make sure you ask for references and use your landlords' rights in accordance with the tenancy agreement. If you don't know who lives in your property, you could be left with a huge bill for putting the damage these criminals cause right if a factory is discovered. You never really know what happens behind closed doors, but having a rough idea of who you're living near to does not make you a nosey neighbour. If you notice any of the following signs then make a note and an informed decision as to whether the police should get involved: curtains that are never open; an overflowing mailbox that is never emptied; a mailbox that is taped up or sealed; rubbish not being left out on bin collection days; never being asked to take in a parcel; increased security like CCTV or metal gates on front doors and bars on windows; and holes knocked in chimney breasts. Cannabis gives off a distinctive odour and criminals will go to great lengths to mask it. Using large amounts of toilet disinfectant, fragrant sprays and plug-in air fresheners are all techniques used to shield the smell, although it will still cling to clothing and fabric in a similar way to tobacco. Criminals will also use sophisticated fan systems to pump out the odours. These are normally set on timers and will let out an annoying humming sound when turned on. Cannabis factories also give off large amounts of heat. A frost-free roof in winter is probably a sign of poor insulation or excessive heat production, and possibly an indication of a cannabis factory.

A cannabis factory requires a lot of equipment, for example, plant pots, compost, lighting equipment and heat lamps. Criminals will go to great efforts to hide what is going on by bringing in these items during the quietest times of the day or night, so it is worth making a note if you notice odd comings and goings from a property. When the crop is ready to be sold, a small grower might have their buyers come to them, so be aware of new faces. However, a large factory will send its product elsewhere to be split up and sold. This creates a large amount of waste that will need to be disposed of before the process can start again. Cannabis factories are very dangerous and are at risk of fire due to the electrics being rewired directly into the mains. Moreover, they can attract undesirable people to the area. But remember, don't do the investigation yourself. Just look for the signs and consider: "it might be nothing, but‌" The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. I

am Sarah Kudirka, a professional artist, living in Wanstead with my husband and toddler. This is my second year of participating in Art Trail Wanstead and I am especially looking forward to the 'Meet the Artists' evening on Wednesday 9 September.

Painting in my studio is a solitary activity, so it'll be great to meet people and talk about the art. You may have seen my city skyline paintings previously, but I intend to show a different side of my art this year, with the bold semi-abstract oil paintings for which I have won a number of awards. I am delighted to be working with Darrell James Travel, not just because my paintings are as vibrant as their sunshine-yellow walls, but also because throughout my life I've drawn inspiration from my travels. In spring, in this magazine, I asked: "When did you last look up at the sky?" ahead of my installation at Canary Wharf of 90 city skyline paintings on Polaroids. I only began painting on Polaroids a few years ago and that series of my work is still growing, but I have been making semi-abstract paintings in my characteristic style for over 20 years. I have long included words on my paintings but these latest works feature what I see as 'words you cannot read' – areas intended to look like reversed or obscured lettering. They are inspired by old newsprint and

posters plastered over empty shop windows and hand-painted advertisements I've seen in India and Africa. I make both kinds of work – on canvas and on Polaroids – in parallel. Making my larger scale paintings is often a frustrating, but also an exciting, push-pull process – one that I love being immersed in. While I may produce a batch of city sky images in one session, one of my more complex paintings may take months. At the time of writing, I am still working on a painting to show in the trail, over a year since I started it. Do come and see if I've completed it!

Child mental health A petition to urge the UK government to reinstate national research into adolescent mental health has been launched by local resident and founder of Free Your Mind Natasha Benjamin. Anupama Gulati reports

A

Free Your Mind is a childhood domestic violence and mental health support and campaign service. We aim to raise awareness of children and young people's mental health. We provide support services for young people through our workshops, community support groups and oneto-one counselling and mentoring, along with some online interactive services. Our success can be seen in the people we work with; higher selfesteem, improved emotional management and stronger relationships have been found in 90% of the people who use our services*. The Office for National Statistics conducted a five-yearly prevalence study of common mental health problems in children and young people; however, the 'latest' statistics were published in 2004, over a decade ago*. This suggests there is a lack of reliable research into the current state of young people's mental health. Natasha Benjamin, founder of Free Your Mind, generated the idea for a campaign to raise awareness of young people's mental health and this idea has developed into an online petition to urge the UK government to reinstate national research into adolescent mental health. A survey of 1,180 school leaders reported two thirds of head teachers were concerned with students' mental health above any other wellbeing concern; the next biggest concern was domestic violence (58%) and cyberbullying (55%)*. The British Psychological Society also note a lack of prevalence data causing "significant delays" in providing support and improving young people's mental health. One young person

*Contact Free Your Mind for details of sources

lmost two million children are affected by domestic violence across the UK*. The impact on children and young people is the same, if not more, than that on the victims themselves; children easily become silent victims. One in three children have been found to have a mental illness that is directly linked to the experience of domestic violence in their homes*.

complained: "I came out of a teenage mental health unit worse than when I went in"*. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services has been experiencing dramatic increases in demand since 2004, reporting a 70% increase in referrals*. However, mental health services for children and young people in England were cut by ÂŁ35 million last year, in spite of the government's assurance to transform mental health care*. Onset of mental ill health can be as young as eight years old*, so we believe child mental health and surrounding issues require urgent attention. We hope to bring the policymakers' attention to the depth of this issue and its significant negative implications. Our objective is to raise awareness and gain support from the public and the government. This should translate into up-todate research and the safe and effective planning and management of mental health services for children in the UK. We would like your support for our campaign, so please sign our petition and share it with those directly and indirectly affected by this issue. 1902

1881

It is difficult from the 1841 census to identify the building, one of several homes in and around the park. It is shown on the first Ordnance Survey map in 1863 as the Temple, but this name does not appear on census returns until 1881, when it is described as a 'shooting box' (a lodge used by shooting parties, often with a room to hang game and another to store guns and ammunition). This tallies with the 1822 sale catalogue listing of traps, nets and guns. In 1881, the Temple housed no less than three families, but a year later the Corporation of London opened Wanstead Park to the public following its purchase from the then owner Lord Cowley. William Puffett, a carpenter born in 1820 in Writtle, was appointed head keeper, as he had been "for many years in charge of the grounds and the Grotto". He moved into the Temple, along with his son Robert (born

1853), who had been appointed as one of three underkeepers. After the Grotto burnt down in 1884, Puffett senior moved into the newly-built refreshment chalet, which he ran until 1902. The Epping Forest Committee kept one room within the Temple for its own use on its regular visits to the forest. Once a month, the members would expect dinner. Robert Puffett was instructed by the superintendent to shoot ducks for the meal, which was cooked by his wife, and Puffett and George Paveley, the resident staff, would serve dressed in their white summer uniforms. From 1882 until 1960 the Temple's main function was to house Forest keepers and their families. Two families generally lived there. Outside there were stables, a tool shed, a duck pond and duck shed, as well as a ferret hutch for frequent ratting parties. Keepers entered the building from behind. The address of their home was Keepers' Cottages, not the Temple. The front lawn and portico were out of bounds. The committee room in the south wing could be accessed via a short flight of steps leading to a central door (both now removed). There was a large flagpole next to the old mounting block in front of the portico and in the interwar period it was flanked by two field guns. The Temple was never open

ast month, we discussed how the Temple was built as a landscape feature in the grounds of Wanstead House and how it was used before Wanstead House was demolished. The grounds were then mortgaged and managed by trustees, who stripped the park of its assets. The grounds, parts let out for grazing, parts for arable farming, were overseen by gamekeepers, who continued to live at the Temple.

to the public, and was not particularly visible, shrouded as the front was in bushes, with trees around the enclosure. The building suffered bomb damage in both World Wars, but was patched up. It continued in use as a domestic building until new lodges were built alongside at the end of the 1950s, into which the keepers moved. The lower part of the building was then used as offices for Forest staff. Upstairs, the committee still made use of its room, which was otherwise used to

store archives. By the 1950s, the committee's monthly dinners had become venison suppers, again prepared and served by the keepers. These continued annually until recently.

Afterwards, work started on the garden with the aim of opening up the view of the Temple. The shrubs and trees masking the front of the building were removed over time. In 2000, the picket fence was replaced by a metal one and in 2002, the rhododendrons that had surrounded the enclosure were grubbed up. The repair of the Temple – and its greater presence – stimulated plans to open the building to the public. Starting with Open House weekend in 1996, by 2006 the Temple was open to the public one weekend in four, with craft activities and guided walks offered. In 2000, the cleared garden became the venue for the annual Music in Wanstead Park event and then also for summer theatre performances. Since April 2008, when the roof was retiled once more, the Temple has been open every weekend and Bank Holiday with a programme of events and temporary exhibitions, such as this one. As part of the public consultation in early 2015, plans were unveiled for the Temple to become the main visitor hub for Wanstead Park. Its future is secure. The Temple Over Time exhibition is on show at the Temple in Wanstead Park until 27 September (open 12pm to 5pm weekends and Bank Holidays). Entry is free. For more information, call 020 7332 1911

2015

In 1990, an extensive landscape survey of Wanstead Park by Debois recommended reinstating the original view of the Temple at the end of a double avenue of trees. Rows of sweet chestnut trees were subsequently planted. Meanwhile, the City Surveyors, responsible for the fabric of the Temple, undertook a condition survey in 1992 prior to a major overhaul. This repair and refurbishment work was completed in May 1997. More authentic, glazed black pantiles were placed on the roof. Paint was stripped off the brickwork, which was repointed. Internally, a new wooden staircase was inserted in the southern wing, now the public stairs, and the upstairs rooms were restored as close as possible to their 18thcentury appearance.

Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the sixth of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Peter Rowe explains how finding a good camera club can keep a photographer's inspiration alive

W

hy photography? I'm science-oriented and intrigued by gadgets, but that doesn't stop me from appreciating art. I bought a camera years ago while at university. After an initial spurt I found that I only really used it when on holiday – a learning experience each time it came out of the bag. After several years of this I decided to enrol on a City and Guilds course and spent many a long evening mastering darkroom techniques. This helped. After passing, I assisted as a technician, making up the chemicals and advising other students. I then slowly subsided back into a further period in the wilderness. What I needed was time and inspiration, so I looked for a camera club. This spurred me on and some of my photos did reasonably well in competitions. My preference is to take landscape, nature and macro photographs which, good or bad, is one of the best ways of justifying buying more gadgets and ensuring that you have the maximum weight of kit on your back. My time taking photos 'the old-fashioned way' taught me that you need to spend time thinking about each picture and its composition. Regardless, I took an immense amount of rubbish. In this digital era, it's too tempting to push the button sooner, without as much thought, and to keep your finger on it. It's all too easy to forget those valuable early lessons. I used to do all my editing using Adobe Photoshop Elements and I became reasonably proficient trying to improve some of the rubbish I took. I'd like to think that I now take better photos. Adobe Lightroom is now my workhorse and I use Elements to tidy up distracting details rather than making wholesale changes. Through the above, my membership of the Royal Photographic Society and my sister-in-law's barbed "errr, you used to take that five years ago" comments, I've steadily improved. I'm now looking to get my Royal Photographic Society Licentiate qualification.
