Welcome... Shortly after this issue is published, our TV screens will once again be adorned with the work of those masters of Yuletide spin, the advertising creatives. And if rumours are to believed, Sir Elton John will be heading up John Lewis’ latest entry in the seasonal TV ad battle. So, with festive theme tunes beginning to take over our audible surroundings and with the Wanstead tree set to light up George Green this month, it must be time to step into Christmas. But there is one more annual event to be honoured before the first advent calendar doors are opened. The two-minute silence observed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is always a powerful reminder of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, but those moments of reflection will this year be all the more poignant, marking the centenary of the end of the First World War. Since its unveiling in 1922, Wanstead’s own war memorial has become an integral feature of our High Street and many of us regularly pass the winged figure of Victory. Some of us may have even paused to read the inscriptions, but now is a time to truly stop… and remember. Remember those who were once themselves integral to a bygone community; remember those who were once integral in the fight for the freedoms we all enjoy today; remember those who were once lost but now deserve to remain engraved in our collective memories. “Men of Wanstead, whom their neighbours hereby commemorate, here numbered among those who in the Great War at the call of king and country left all that was dear to them, endured hardship, faced danger and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that their sacrifice was not in vain.” Lee Marquis, Editor

Controversial proposals for large-scale music concert on Wanstead Flats Event organisers MAMA & Company are hoping to stage a large-scale music concert on Wanstead Flats in 2020. The plans – which cover up to six hectares of grassland – have met objection from wildlife campaigners. “Given the fragile state of the ecosystems on Wanstead Flats, especially after the worst grassland fire in London’s history earlier this year, we cannot envisage a scenario in which such a large event would have anything other than a severely damaging impact on local wildlife,” said a Wren Group spokesperson. The proposals are due to be

scrutinised by the Epping Forest Consultative Committee this month, and if progressed, a public licensing consultation will be undertaken. Organisers will also be required to obtain a licence from Redbridge Council before any event is allowed to take place.

Rotarians to meet president

LED lighting scheme

Members of the Rotary Club of Woodford Green will host a Christmas celebration on 10 December featuring guest of honour Debbi Hodge, the president of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland. The event – which is open to visitors interested in joining the club (tickets: £20) – will take place at the Best Western Epping Forest Hotel. “This is a real one-up for our club!” said Wanstead resident David Etherton. Call 020 8989 2701

Redbridge Council’s plans to replace 17,500 street lamps across the borough with energyefficient LEDs is set to finish by the end of November, a year earlier than originally planned when the scheme was launched in 2017. “Keeping our streets safe is one of our priorities, and the new LED lights are helping both drivers and pedestrians, and delivering excellent levels of energy savings,” said Councillor John Howard.

Wanstead photographer to unveil Jack the Ripper photo project Chamber Street, E1, close to where Francis Cole was murdered in Swallow Gardens

The origins of Christmas customs will be the subject of next month’s meeting of the Wanstead Historical Society. “Many of our Christmas traditions are rooted in the 19th century: the tree, crackers and Santa’s grotto. The commercialisation of Christmas also dates from Victoria’s reign, when Harry Selfridge coined the slogan ‘Only … more shopping days to Christmas!’” said Nick Dobson, whose talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 3 December from 7.45pm (visitors: £3). Overwhelming support for an environmental charter for Wanstead

Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson will open a new exhibition at the 84 Gallery on Nightingale Lane this month, displaying images from a project documenting locations in the East End of London connected with Jack the Ripper. “Most of the photos have been taken on cold, dark, rainy nights at infamous locations for maximum atmosphere. It seems appropriate, therefore, to open on a dark winter evening,” said Geoff. The display will be unveiled on 24 November (6pm to 9pm) and runs until 21 December. Call 020 8530 1244

Some 90 people attended a public meeting at Wanstead library last month to hear plans for establishing an environmental charter for Wanstead. Susie Knox of Wild Wanstead outlined charter proposals that called on the council, businesses, schools and individuals to all play a part in creating a more sustainable environment in the area. “The spirit is there, we have seen it with the Wild Wansteadled tree pit planting and the community gardening. We just need to plug into that,” said Councillor Paul Donovan.

Drugs: is the time now ripe for decriminalisation? Join the debate

An artist with a love of the coast will be demonstrating how to paint a seascape in acrylics at Wanstead House this month. “I spent my childhood on the Atlantic coast and the love of coastal scenes has never left me. The interaction of light on water, in different seasons, weather conditions and times of day holds a particular fascination for me and is a recurring feature of my work,” said John Heywood, whose presentation for the Essex Art Club will take place on 25 November from 2.30pm (visitors: £5). Visit essexartclub.co.uk

A discussion exploring the decriminalisation of drugs will take place at Wanstead Library this month. Hosted by the East London Humanists, the debate will be led by Simon, a recovered drug addict who knows only too well the damage drugs can cause. “Simon will explain his view on how ineffectual the current law is and the benefits of reform, using examples such as the Portuguese model,” said a spokesperson for the group. The event will take place on 26 November from 7.30pm (visitors welcome; free). Visit wavidi.co/elh

U

nlike Woodford’s War Memorial, which has a general dedication, the memorial on Wanstead High Street bears a – sadly incomplete – list of names. The story of Clement Charles Andrews is similar to that of his cousin Alfred Frederick Andrews. Clement was born in Woodford but by 1911 was a printer’s errand boy, living at 26 Voluntary Place, Wanstead. Butcher’s errand boy Alfred hailed from New Cross but lived in Woodford with his widowed mother. Both men joined the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1915, taking consecutive service numbers and serving with the 12th Battalion. On 16 October 1916, their battalion was ordered to occupy the newly captured Schwaben Redoubt near the River Ancre on the Somme. On the next day, German artillery furiously bombarded the location; as they had served together, so too the cousins died together, and neither has a known grave. Albert Escott was another resident who met his end under shellfire, this time at Ypres. He left a widow and two small children, but was also missed by the patrons of Woodford Cinema on George Lane, where he had been the long-standing attendant. Unlike the above, Captain Loscombe Law Stable was a career soldier with the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers, passing out with honours from Sandhurst during 1907. During the pre-war years in India, he proved an accomplished polo player, being in the team that won the 1913 Infantry Polo Tournament in Delhi. He was born on 21 March 1886 at Wanstead Lodge, the son of Daniel Wintringham Stable, barrister, secretary and later director of the Prudential Assurance Company, and former agent to Earl Cowley. Deployed with his battalion early in the war, he sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his side on 26 October 1914 while trying to bring the wounded Private Ellis back to a trench. Ironically, Ellis, who was wounded in the knee, managed to drag himself to safety. Russell Colin Stable, Loscombe’s cousin, was killed in 1917 near Judge Wood during the Battle of Poelcappelle while serving with the Warwickshire Regiment. Both men are

commemorated at Holy Trinity Church on Hermon Hill. Henry John Riggs was the grandson of John Riggs, who established the ‘Riggs Retreats’ at various locations in Epping Forest. Henry was born at Theydon Bois where his father Thomas ran one of the family establishments. He was reported missing during the advance on the Hindenburg Line in April 1917 – the ferocious battle for Gavrelle nearly decimated 1st Battalion Honourable Artillery Company of which Henry was a member. With no known grave, his name appears on the Arras Memorial. Ernest Boulton of ‘Redlands’ on Hermon Hill arrived in France with the London Scottish in June 1916, but within weeks was confined to hospital for two months suffering from shellshock. He was killed on the Somme during October. He had been a chorister at Christ Church, Wanstead and it was reported that he sang there before leaving Wanstead for the last time. Mary Ilene Hack does not appear on the memorial. Born in Wanstead during 1894, she was the daughter of retired builder and contractor Walter John Hack and his wife Emily. In September 1914, she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment and during April 1915 was appointed to the staff of Highams Auxiliary Military Hospital in Woodford Green. After 18 months, her health failed but after recovering became a driver with the Army Service Corps. Unfortunately, during her service she contracted tuberculosis and died aged 24 on 8 December 1918 at the family home on The Drive, Snaresbrook. She is buried beneath a pink granite cross in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin on Overton Drive. And finally, someone who is both on the memorial and in one of the war graves at St Mary the Virgin churchyard. Frank Lucas was born in Wanstead during 1890, and for many years, 12 Camden Road was the family home to his mother, Caroline, and bricklayer father, Frederick. On 13 October 1909, Frank swapped his job as a clerk for a 12-year engagement as a stoker in the Royal Navy – dirty and taxing work in the coal-burning ships of the day.

As the nation marks the centenary of the Armistice, local historian Adrian Lee tells the story of some of Wanstead’s WWI heroes, taken from his research into over 600 war dead Ernest Boulton from Wanstead was killed on the Somme in 1916

Remembering The census of 1911 found him among the crew of the Battleship HMS Duncan in the Grand Harbour, Malta. As a regular sailor, he participated in the war from the start and survived for three and a half years, but when the Admiralty sought volunteers “to perform a hazardous service”, Stoker Petty Officer Lucas came forward. On 23 April 1918, he was among the skeleton crew of HMS Iphigenia, once a proud cruiser but now a designated blockship to be sunk as part of the raid on Zeebrugge, which was fiercely opposed and only partly effective. His record reveals it was not shell or shot which claimed him on 24 April, but “gas poisoning received in operations off the

Belgian Coast.” His wife Florrie received the news at 132 West Ferry Road, Millwall. Frank was returned to Wanstead, where he rests in the family plot with his parents. His devoted wife arranged for a small white memorial tablet to be placed on the grave, and her commemoration ends with the promise: “We will meet again.” Do you know of any former local residents killed in either world war or other conflict? Out Of tragedy... Carina Harris was working at a school when a young boy suffered a fatal heart attack. The tragic event prompted her and fellow Wanstead Business Network members to support Cardiac Risk in the Young

I

’ll never forget that day. I was working in the kitchen at King Solomon High School in Barkingside when a staff member ran in and seemed desperate for jugs of water. I took them to the gym and saw staff and children crying uncontrollably. Then I saw a young boy who had collapsed. Staff were trying to resuscitate him. Paramedics had been called but sadly, he didn’t survive. The entire school went into shock and there was absolute mourning for this 13-year-old whose life suddenly ended during a routine school day when he suffered a heart attack. That day affected many hundreds of children, family, friends and all the teachers and staff. It affected me too. I’ll never forget it. Since this event, I have noticed a recurrent theme of children dying at school, clubs, home and even on holiday. I realised that what happened at the school was not unique. Sadly, it is happening all over the country and with alarming frequency: 12 young people die each week from undetected heart conditions and one in every 300 people screened will need to be referred to a cardiologist. Then I heard about the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and it brought back those painful memories, so I wanted to be part of something positive. Together with the support of friends, family and professional colleagues at the Wanstead Business Network, we decided to raise funds via an event. We settled on a 70s and 80s disco where all money would be donated to CRY to support their free screenings, their involvement with cardiac research and to counsel bereaved families. Many Wanstead Business Network members have volunteered their services: Wanstead Golf Club is providing the venue, our DJ will be

playing the music, our magician will entertain, our photographer will record the event, the Wanstead Village Directory is helping to spread the word and our designer and printer have produced the promotional material. Others are selling tickets and distributing collection boxes. Everybody is on board and making their unique and professional contribution. We want to inform the community about CRY’s fantastic work and how they’re saving lives with free screenings, which are attended by a sports cardiologist and can detect if a young person (aged 14 to 35) is at risk from an undetected heart condition. As one cardiologist said: “When a young person dies, what are we losing? A person’s potential, the contribution they may have made and also the trauma that their family goes through.” The disco will take place on 24 November (tickets: £20). For more information, email monq@hotmail.co.uk. Donations are also welcome, visit wavidi.co/cry For more information on CRY, visit c-r-y-.org.uk call 01737 363 222 For more information on the Wanstead Business Network, visit wavidi.co/wbn

COULD A DENTAL CHECKUP

SAVE YOUR LIFE? MOUTH CANCER can affect anyone. In the past ten years there has been a sharp rise in cases affecting men and women over 30 – although men are twice as likely to get it as women. It can be spotted in the early stages and successfully treated but, sadly, many people go to their dentist or doctor too late. Warning signs can be ulcers, red or white patches or any lumps or bumps – also persistent hoarseness of the voice. If you have ANY of these symptoms and they haven’t disappeared within three weeks, it is very important to get your mouth checked. Contact Woodford House for an appointment straight away and you’ll be seen as soon as possible by one of our highly-trained professionals. If we find any cause for concern, you will immediately be referred to a mouth cancer specialist at one of the hospitals. If you’re confident your mouth isn’t showing any of the recognised signs, don’t forget to arrange your regular dental checkup at Woodford House. We screen for mouth cancer as part of every routine dental examination. EARLY DETECTION IS VITAL.

the school's heart Following a £40k refurbishment over the summer, PTA member Lorraine Bucknall explains why the library is now the heart of Wanstead High School, and what they are raising funds for next

P

arents of prospective Wanstead High students who attended the school’s open evening in September were some of the first people to see the Redbridge Lane West school’s newly refurbished library. The refurbishment, which was undertaken over the summer, has been a collaborative effort between the school and parents. The school’s PTA met its fundraising target of £18,000 for new furniture and shelving and the school matched that amount to cover the complete redecoration and restore the beautiful parquet flooring, which has been hidden under carpet for years. The new furniture includes movable shelving to make the library space more flexible and to make it more adaptable for reading groups, after-school book clubs and class study. New desks and seating allow the library to accommodate more students and soft seating creates a more casual, comfortable environment where students can relax while reading during break, lunchtime or after school. The library is a central part of the school and is in constant use from Year 7 to the sixth form. Students have regular reading lessons and many of the students use the facility for study and research. School librarian Helen Maule said: “We are very fortunate to have such a beautiful new library, especially at a time when many schools are opting for learning resources centres or no library at all. The PTA have done a fantastic job fundraising and the students and myself are extremely grateful. Since opening, we’ve had a book fair, poetry performances and library lessons. The students really do love being in the library and now more than ever it really does feel like the heart of the school.”

The PTA raised money by holding a number of events, including the annual curry and quiz night, comedy nights at Wanstead Golf Club and a fashion night. The school was also chosen as one of the charities for the Co-op community funding scheme, which provided a significant contribution to the project. We have greatly appreciated the support from parents and visitors to the school and from local businesses. In addition, a number of parents obtained match funding from their employers or have donated online. At the last count, the library contained over 19,000 fiction, non-fiction and reference books. Research has shown that children who read a varied selection of books perform better in English and the school believes access to books is vital in helping students to grow and to prepare them for the transition from high school to university, or to other forms of further education. The PTA is now working to raise funds to buy more books and replace some of the much-loved books which students have enjoyed over the years. This year’s Wanstead High School PTA curry and quiz night will take place on 17 November from 6.30pm (tickets: £15). Email wansteadhighpta@gmail.com

Here for us all

With a new shop to open in Wanstead this month, Saint Francis Hospice will raise its profile in the area. But the service provided by the Haveringbased charity has always been here for us, says Amanda Green

T

his time two years ago Saint Francis Hospice entered my life as my mum entered Saint Francis Hospice. It was life-changing on many levels. Mostly, of course, because my beloved mum was dying and went into Saint Francis to receive end-of-life care. But it was also life-changing because once I and my family experienced what a hospice does, and in particular the care which Mum received, there was no way we couldn’t feel anything but compelled to support the charity by raising funds and awareness. For me, this awareness takes on two forms. General awareness about the differences between a hospital and a hospice as well as awareness that Saint Francis Hospice in Havering-atte-Bower serves the whole of the borough of Redbridge as well as other areas. It has an 18-bed, in-patient unit as well as Hospice at Home, which provides palliative care to Redbridge residents. Saint Francis serves to maintain life for those with life-limiting illnesses and give the most comfortable and dignified end-of-life care possible for the terminally ill. If you have no experience of a hospice, as it was for me, you may imagine them to be frightening, cheerless places full of sickness and death. Like me, you couldn’t be more wrong! They are full of laughter, love, compassion and camaraderie. They become ‘home’ for a few days or a few weeks, not just for the patient but for their family too. The family are supported through this terribly difficult time just as the patients are. The moment my mum entered Saint Francis, I felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders, and the support and concern for us all was tangible. And it doesn’t stop when the

Amanda with her parents

patient passes away, either; the hospice offer a bereavement counselling service too. The opening of the Saint Francis charity shop on Wanstead High Street will hopefully raise awareness in these parts. Much-needed awareness for a charity that receives just 28% of its funding from the NHS and needs to raise £7.8m a year (that’s £21,000 a day) to cover the costs of its specialist end-of-life care services. Some 1,693 patients were cared for by Saint Francis in the past year. So, now you see why it is so important to us to raise funds and awareness for Saint Francis. We have done this through walks and runs. My 84-year-old father accompanied us on the 10k Starwalk for the hospice this year and my son ran the Bristol Half Marathon in his nanny’s memory last year. And hopefully, this article will have raised awareness locally and encouraged a few readers to dig deep and donate to this wonderful cause or get involved in fundraising for the hospice – none of us know when we or a loved one might need their help. Saint Francis Hospice is located on Broxhill Road in Havering-atte-Bower, RM4 1QH. Visit sfh.org.uk or call 01708 753319

FACELESS CRIMINALS From passwords to payments, PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team offers some tips to help keep you and your data safe online

A

s more crimes are moving online, there are a few common mistakes that, if remedied, can make you less of a target for cybercrime. These faceless criminals are fishing thousands of people, waiting for a victim to bite. By leaving a window open, you’re tempting them in. By clicking on an attachment or link, you’re holding it wide open. So, here are some tips to keep yourself safe. Passwords are a necessary thing and are used for everything online. A good password is like a good lock on a door. Weak passwords can be guessed by criminals, so something like password123 or using family names are no good (criminals can randomly generate passwords using your information). To create a strong password, pick three random words, then add in numbers, uppercase letters and symbols, for example: D1rect0ryVi!!ageW4nste@d. Don’t use the same password for everything. Not having antivirus software will open yourself up to not only criminals but every pop-up and spam system out there and slow your computer down. Most computers have built-in antivirus and you can always add more (not necessarily at a cost), but remember to keep it up to date. Update your software and apps. Companies are working hard to prevent data losses and patch glitches, so downloading the latest versions will make sure you remain safe. Back up your data regularly. Should you get hit by a blackmail virus that threatens to wipe your system, you will not lose everything. External hard drives and the cloud will help. If you are a victim of burglary, the laptop might be stolen but the cloud will act as a backup.

Never click on suspicious links or open unknown attachments that might be sent out on email, social media or as text messages. Doing so could allow criminals inside using malicious software (malware) to remotely access your computer. They might take you to a cloned web page or allow the criminal to monitor your keystrokes. You can be at particular risk of this if you connect to unsecure Wi-Fi. The person at the next table could have set up a free Wi-Fi hotspot, and if you connect to it, your every action will be watched. If you are unsure, use 3G or 4G. Never do mobile banking when you’re out for the above reasons. I would also recommend using trusted payment companies when paying people rather than a direct transfer. These systems tend to have more security, and if the worst does happen, there is more likelihood of getting your money back. It is important to report any crime, including cybercrime, so the appropriate resources can be allocated and your information might form part of a bigger investigation. Cybercrime can be reported to ActionFraud. Visit actionfraud.police.uk or call 0330 123 2040

d s d sb gCuban s knees-up g Independent local travel advisor Jack Leaf offers an overview of his recent luxury cruise around Cuba, which allowed him to tick off a music-related travel ambition

W

hilst cruising between the Spanish colonial cities of Trinidad in Cuba and Cartagena in Columbia, it struck me that I should be writing about MV Silver Cloud and the Silversea expedition cruise I am currently enjoying. I have long wanted to visit Cuba but the rumours of food scarcity and poor quality deterred me, until I heard about this cruise itinerary. Silversea is one of the finest international cruise lines, so one is assured of a high standard of accommodation and cuisine on relatively small ships (300 to 400 passengers) and their expedition cruises include a full itinerary of shore excursions, interspersed with on-board lectures and an absence of on-board formal entertainment. The cruise was scheduled to depart from Nassau in the Bahamas, but I flew first to Miami to adjust, following the transatlantic flight with three nights in one of my favourite cities. A one-hour flight from there to Nassau and a 30-minute onward journey by road to the seaport enabled an unexpected and rapid highlights tour of Downtown Nassau. After a day at sea, MV Silver Cloud sailed majestically into Santiago de Cuba, a city founded in 1515 and where Fidel Castro launched his overthrow of the Batista regime. One of many Cuban cities that exhibit what I call ‘charming dereliction’, it is often overlooked by tourists due to its distance from Havana and the coastal resort of Varadero. Highlights of the city tour included Changing of the Guard, a 12-minute ceremony twice an hour at Santa lfigenia Cemetery, and a visit to Casa Diego Velazquez, the colonial mansion lived in by the Spanish conqueror of Cuba. We also toured the Moncada Barracks, from where Castro launched his failed coup and which is

now the chilling museum that recounts the callous put-down of that first attempt. The next stop, Havana, was the highlight of the cruise. I’d made arrangements to have dinner at the capital’s only true five-star hotel, Gran Hotel Manzana, on the sixth (top) floor overlooking the crumbling city – perfect food in a perfect setting. From there, we travelled by vintage car to the Buena Vista Social Club for an evening show of fantastic singing and instrumental accompaniment; one of my decades-old travel ambitions achieved. Our last day in Cuba saw us on an excursion from Cienfeugos to Trinidad; a colourful city that became rich from sugar exports. When I hear old people in London refer to their East End childhood, remarking that their families were hard up and they didn’t have much but were happy, that’s how I will remember Cuba. No-one looked hungry, no-one begged, everyone smiles and you’re never far from their equivalent of an East End knees-up! Jack is based in Snaresbrook – visit destiny-travel.co.uk or call 020 8989 6764. To read more of Jack’s travel stories, visit wavidi.co/jleaf

S

naresbrook in the middle of the 18th century was a desirable place to live for London merchants and craftsmen. Centred on The Eagle (originally the Spread Eagle) and with easy access to the city by means of two turnpiked roads, the Woodford Road from 1724 and Snaresbrook Road from 1757, it was a place of clean air and good water supply. Birch Well can still be seen on the edge of the forest, and at least one house in Snaresbrook still has its own well to this day. Snaresbrook is unusual in that its boundaries are not clearly defined; it is formally in Wanstead Parish, but Forest School is in Snaresbrook although in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, and the postcode of many properties is E18, South Woodford. I have been researching the history of various houses in Snaresbrook, following on from my study of the history and interesting inhabitants of Snaresbrook House. Of great note was the Hermitage, a fine Georgian mansion in Snaresbrook Road, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Early occupants included Jeremiah Harman, at one time director of the Bank of England. Jeremiah, a well-known art collector, later inherited Highams, which is now Woodford County High School (and 250 years old this year). He gave his name, although slightly altered, to Hermon Hill. A later occupant was Sir James William Morrison, Deputy Master of the Mint. His widow, Lady Morrison, was a great benefactor to Wanstead, leaving money to the Weavers’ Almshouses and donating the bells and a clock to Christ Church. She also paid for the building of the chapel at

the Seamen’s Orphanage (which is now a synagogue). She died in 1871. Later occupants such as the Good family were also supporters of the Royal Infant Orphanage (now Snaresbrook Crown Court) and the Duchess of Kent attended a fete at the Hermitage in aid of the Orphanage in 1938. Other buildings of note which remain include White Lodge on the corner of Snaresbrook and Woodford Roads, one-time home of Sir Christopher Musgrave, chairman of the Metropolitan Water Board, and what is now James Hilton House on Woodford Road, where the author of Lost Horizon lived in the 1930s and which was originally two houses, Bellgrove and Ingoldsby. Buildings we have lost include Snaresbrook Hall, replaced by flats in the 1930s, Copsfield, the home of the Scrutton family, and Gowan Lea, a school for many years. The grand houses of The Drive were begun in the late 1890s, replacing another large mansion known as Wanstead Hall or Hunters Hall. Hollybush Hill still has Kingsley Grange, a fine Victorian mansion originally called Mornington Lodge. Two houses in that road were once Barnardo children’s homes, Staffa and Iona.

Lynn’s talk for the Woodford Historical Society will take place at Trinity Catholic High School (Lower Site Hall), Sydney Road, Woodford Green from 7.45pm on 19 November (visitors: £3). For more information, call 020 8505 3640

Putting down roots A popular open garden trail across Aldersbrook over the summer has prompted the founding of the Aldersbrook Horticultural Society, which held its first meeting last month. Judith McCann reports

T

Susannah highlighted how the unique position of Aldersbrook, surrounded by Wanstead Flats,Wanstead Park and the City of London Cemetery, offers a home to a uniquely wide variety of wildlife, from newts and toads to grass snakes and hedgehogs, all of which we can tempt into our gardens, whether they are neat and manicured or wild and overgrown. It was exciting to hear that several of the audience have hedgehogs in their gardens, particularly as Susannah explained that research from the Royal Horticultural Society confirms that none of the popular home remedies to deter slugs, such as copper wire, egg shells or grit, actually work, but that wildlife such as toads and hedgehogs will make a tasty meal of slugs every evening. Susannah encouraged us all to think of how we can use our garden space, whether big or small, to support biodiversity with water, long grass, nesting boxes, trees, leaf mounds and log piles. Planting front gardens was also suggested as a way to diminish the increasing growth of grey concrete. Susannah went on to answer questions from the audience including: “Is there anything positive about squirrels?” Answer: probably not, other than as an example of a tenacious and cunning species! Susannah suggested

he success of Aldersbrook Open Gardens in June this year was a clear indication there are many keen gardeners in the area. And so it was that over 55 people turned up at the Aldersbrook Bowls Club last month to hear Susannah Knox from Wild Wanstead give a talk at the Aldersbrook Horticultural Society’s inaugural meeting. suspending a bird feeder from fishing line as a way of deterring squirrels from eating the bird seed. In response to: “What can I do to stop being bitten by insects in my garden on a summer’s evening?” Susannah suggested accepting the bites and celebrating successfully encouraging a thriving insect life into the garden. Many of the audience were then sent home with wild flower seeds to plant in their gardens, in tree pits or any other open space. At the end of the evening, Jane Karavasili provided a list of jobs for October, including mulching, planting bulbs, collecting seeds, taking cuttings and shaping shrubs. Our next meeting is on 13 November, when George Lockwood, a passionate organic gardener who trained at Capel Manor, will be talking about soil and bulbs from January to May. Come along and bring pen and paper to write down all his tips. Aldersbrook Horticultural Society meetings are held at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on the second Tuesday of every month from 7.30pm (annual membership: £35; visitors: £5. Visit wavidi.co/ahs

BACK IN THE GAME Millicent Brown continues to follow Frank Lampard Sr’s integration into Wanstead life. The former West Ham star – who recently become a grandad again – now plays a key role in local football

W

anstead’s local football team Snaresbrook FC is seen here pictured with their new sponsor Frank Lampard Sr, landlord of Nightingale on the Green, who has kindly donated the kit they are wearing in this photograph. And Frank’s support is certainly boosting the team’s performance as they are already flying high at the very top of Division One of the Essex Olympian Football League – despite having played one game fewer than the team below this season. Locals had feared that the historic Nightingale pub might have closed its doors for the last time earlier this year until former West Ham and England star Frank stepped in and renamed it Nightingale on the Green, retaining its old traditional pub character. Then Frank decided to get behind Snaresbrook FC, based on Nutter Field, providing money which not only paid for this season’s new kit but also new equipment. And Frank recently had cause for a double celebration himself when son Frank Lampard Jr and daughter-in-law Christine Bleakley welcomed their daughter Patricia to the world, whose birth coincided with his 70th birthday. Frank Sr said: “The team look absolutely fantastic in their new kit and I understand the equipment I have funded is helping them really well with their training. I am so glad I have managed to help in this way. If they continue with their current league results, we should end up with a big something to celebrate at the end of the season.” Snaresbrook’s league performance this season has not only been helped by the input of

Frank Lampard Sr with Snaresbrook FC players in their new kit

the local businessman but by the dedication of coaching staff and all squad members. Retaining a number of key players who have been with the team for almost 20 years, with the addition of some new faces who have been attracted by the project, has really allowed the club to progress. Manager Rob Caine, who played for Snaresbrook FC from the under-8s into adulthood until he got injured, said: “The major difference this year has really been the introduction of proper preseason and strategic training sessions, thanks to my right-hand man and coach Kwame. The team are starting to gel really well after a great pre-season and the buy-in we have had from the whole squad has been fantastic and is starting to build a winning mentality.” And locals have got seasonal pleasures to look forward to with Nightingale on the Green embarking on weeks of festive fun and activities, including singing evenings and a Christmas menu for adults and kids. Nightingale on the Green is located at 51 Nightingale Lane, Wanstead. For more information, call 020 8530 4683 For more information on Snaresbrook FC, visit wavidi.co/sfc

RESTORING Wanstead Park

I

n 2009 a group of local people reactivated the dormant Friends of Wanstead Parklands (FWP) to raise public awareness of the important history and ecology of Wanstead Park and campaign for its preservation and enhancement.

Landscape Movement of the 18th century. The cascading lake system is unique.

Any local user of Wanstead Park recognises how privileged the local community is in having such a large, natural, wild, green space right on their doorstep. Combine that with the dramatic history of Wanstead House, built from 1715 and demolished in 1824, and one begins to understand why it has been described as a “jewel in the east”.

The FWP is a charity that exists to preserve the historic landscape, improve the park facilities and create events for both adults and children that showcase the park’s features and raise vital funds.

The grounds of the late Wanstead House – of which important features remain – were one of the finest examples of the English

These days, the routes and spaces once used by nobles are the same green pastures where thousands of people walk their dogs, take their children and relax.

As part of Epping Forest, the park is managed by the City of London. The FWP seek to work with the City to achieve these objectives. As the voice of local people, FWP committee members meet regularly with City of London officials and management in joint liaison meetings, which identify shared goals and

enable the FWP to raise public concerns. The Friends have an active committee which meets monthly, an informative website, 1,000plus Facebook followers and a Twitter feed. A current major issue, which park visitors will have observed, is the worrying fall in lake water levels. This is partly due to the hot summer and a stubborn outbreak of the invasive weed pennywort and is partly essential maintenance, but is predominantly leakage. A recent report into the lakes, dams and overflow systems by the Environment Agency has directed the City of London to carry out urgent repairs. This, and the general degradation of the park environment, has resulted in Wanstead Park being on the Heritage at Risk Register for some years. As a local community group, the Friends of Wanstead Parklands have been working with

the City of London to develop a Heritage Lottery Fund bid, which would address this issue and contribute to the future wellbeing of the park. To this effect, we shortly expect the City to circulate a third iteration of The Parkland Plan, which lays out in detail how the park will be restored. We hope to share this with you in January. The FWP will be hosting a fundraising quiz night at Wanstead Cricket Club, Overton Drive on 23 November from 7pm (tickets: £6). Email gilljames@btinternet.com Residents are encouraged to support the restoration of Wanstead Park by joining the FWP (annual subscription: £5 for an individual or £10 for a family). Wanstead resident and author Chloë Mayer had her first novel published last November. During the intervening 12 months, there have been moments of tears, surprise and laughter

E

xactly one year ago, I was about to embark on one of the scariest and most thrilling experiences of my life. I had written a rather long Microsoft Word document on my laptop – mostly in my pyjamas whenever I had a bit of spare time at home – and had somehow ended up with a literary agent and a publishing deal. That document was my first novel, and it was published as a hardback last November. The Boy Made of Snow is set in a sleepy English village in 1944, where a mother and her young son live in the shadow of war. When they befriend a German prisoner consigned to a nearby farm, their lives are suddenly filled with exciting secrets. But the little boy, who is obsessed with fairy tales, struggles to tell the difference between reality and fantasy – and one day he tells a terrible lie that leads to tragedy and murder. I couldn’t believe that my book – my old Word document! – was suddenly available in shops. I’d dreamed of being an author since I was a little girl. It turns out that it’s quite a strange experience to have a dream turn into reality. And it’s been a funny old year. On one hand, nothing much has changed. I live in the same flat in Wanstead, I hang out with the same people and I even do the same job (freelance journalism, which I now do parttime to fit around writing my second novel). But on the other hand, there have been some very special moments. The hold-your-breathtry-not-cry moments, the remember-for-therest-of-your-life moments. The moments when you realise you’ve stepped into your dream. Seeing my book displayed in Waterstones and Foyles one Saturday; yep, I definitely had something in my eye that day. And there

have been some other moments that caught me by surprise, such as being contacted by readers who enjoyed the book or reading some really lovely reviews by critics. There was a particularly surreal afternoon when I was invited to a recording studio to watch an actor narrate the audio edition. And there were moments that made me laugh too; hearing that my publishers danced in their office when the Kindle UK edition became the number one bestseller for a heady couple of days. But it was scary and nerve-wracking too. What if people hated it? What if it didn’t sell? What if I let everyone down? So, there we have it. A year after publication; nothing has changed and everything has changed. As I say, a funny old year. Now the paperback has just been released. So, I find I’m still strapped to the same white-knuckle ride. I’m scared and nervous all over again. Wish me luck! The Boy Made of Snow is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and is available in hardback and paperback, as an audiobook and e-book. Busy doing nothing Before the internet, boredom was something to be feared. Today, experts are wondering whether it is good for us. Wanstead resident Steve Wilks examines why this may be the case

D

anish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard thought it was the root of all evil. Writer Mary Renault considered it intellectual defeat. French sociologist Jean Baudrillard declared it the world’s secondworst crime. But where boredom might once have been something to fear, today we are never truly bored. In our era of nonstop notifications, how can we be? According to a survey, the average Brit checks their smartphone 28 times a day – at least once per hour. That’s more that 10,000 times a year. “Those little spaces of ‘no work’, like walking through a park, are disappearing,” says Tom Hodgkinson, founder of cult journal The Idler, which advocates a slower-paced approach to life. “You can now work while walking to work. By contrast, you have to make a special effort to create situations for idleness.” Psychology writer Oliver Burkeman states: “The reason patience and stillness are so important right now is that the whole direction of culture is the opposite. You’d think we should be able to relax – we’ve got technology to do things and do them faster. But that is exactly nobody’s experience. The faster that technology drives, the more impatient we are.” Scientific understandings of what happens in our brains during periods when nothing is happening has proved elusive so far. However, a recent study by Dr Deniz Vatansever from Cambridge University has discovered the default mode network, which represents a collection of brain regions used to determine brain activity. It concludes the brain is operating at a high level even when we don’t give it anything to do. The extra activity when we give it a task is actually a much smaller

increase than the process carried out during idle states. In other words, boredom – a state of inactivity – seems to take as much effort as actively doing nothing. In fact, it might help to drive creativity in the background, so boredom might actually be good for you. Hodgkinson goes on to argue that idling is not not doing anything. It is thinking, reading and talking. The Romans called it vita contemplative and there was much debate about which was better, the life of contemplation or the life of activity. Then later on, Protestant thinking was that contemplation was sinful. The original ‘Protestant work ethic’, much like our modern ‘always working’ culture, scorned the appearance of indolence. However, an upside may be found: the idea that periods of idleness enhance productivity during periods of activity. So, next time you find yourself reaching for your phone, stop. Let the scratchy feeling of boredom invade your brain. It could be the most rewarding thing you do and help you be more productive in the future. For more advice on becoming idle, visit idler.co.uk

plants and a time for protecting young plants. Passing young pupils on their way to and from school, I’m reminded of this seasonal, horticultural activity.

Lacking in common sense and not being the most practical of people, my rationality is often inclined to whimsical imaginings. Having taken tenancy on a new allotment plot, my mind is focused on this season’s tasks. The autumn is, like spring, a time for transplanting, a time for replenishing mature

A new term begins. Sometimes, for very young children, who may not have spent time away from their parents before. Those charged with their care, nurture them, protect them and prepare them for their next stage. Their transplantation occurs, and in the autumn, they find themselves in a new environment aimed at encouraging their growth. No longer the taller in their schools but suddenly the youngest and often among the smallest. Saplings among an orchard of maturing trees. And there they stay until they are ready to relocate to another environment that will continue to encourage them to grow and thrive. It’s probably too fanciful to consider that the academic year in some way reflects

vid in his Fasti posed the question why the calendar year begins in the darkness of January and not later in the year when life starts to show itself and rebirth is all around us? I’ve often thought about the reasoning behind the academic year commencing in September and not January. Historically, compulsory education impacted rural communities where the need for harvest gathering took priority. Consequently, the school year was set to begin after the harvest was collected and stored. A practical and sensible reason.

our continual connection with the rhythm of nature in more ways than through the practicality of gathering the annual harvest. Isn’t it? Learning how to take a photograph that captures something of the essence as well as the image of a subject remains challenging to me. Autumn offers many opportunities with low, golden sunlight and blurring mists. A good time to go out with your camera or a phone. If you do, you may come across a pediment over a door that is no longer there. For the doorway location answer, visit wavidi.co/novdoor. To view more of Stephen’s images, visit wavidi.co/slines

Flat out value Even if your flat is immaculately decorated and located in an upand-coming area, it can still be losing value, even when the market is buoyant, says Debra Rose of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

T

his is the situation that can arise when the term of the lease on a flat has less than around 80 years remaining – something that can have a major impact on its value. However, if you own a leasehold property, it is possible to substantially extend the remaining term, even without the consent of your landlord. That is because the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 gives leaseholders the right to extend their lease once they have owned the property for two years. Under the act, a leaseholder can extend the lease for 90 years in addition to the term that is remaining for ‘peppercorn rent’, meaning without ground rent. This means a property which previously had 10 years remaining on the lease would then have 100 years remaining.

Failing to follow the process properly can even lead to the loss of the right to extend the lease for a set period of time, costing you money and potentially jeopardising the saleability of your property – precisely the opposite of what it is intended to achieve.

You will need to pay the landlord a premium in order to extend the lease. The amount you have to pay is calculated using a formula set out in legislation; however, this has variables, which is why a surveyor’s expertise is required. You will also need to cover your own and your landlord’s reasonable legal and valuation costs, as well as Land Registry fees.

As a leaseholder, you also have the option to negotiate with the landlord to agree your own terms for the extension of the lease. For example, you might wish to extend for a period longer than 90 years. However, the landlord does not have to agree to an informal arrangement and if he does agree will often press for an increase in ground rent.

A surveyor will provide higher and lower estimates for the premium to be paid for the extension of your lease. A solicitor will serve notice on the landlord on your behalf of your intention to seek an extension to the lease. This will state the premium you propose to pay. They will also handle the conveyancing of the lease, ensuring the terms are not disadvantageous to you.

If no agreement can be reached through negotiation, you still have the option to pursue the statutory route.

Where a premium cannot be agreed with the landlord, a tribunal will determine the amount to be paid for the extension.

Regardless of which option you choose, it is important to seek professional advice when extending your lease. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead, E11 2PU. For more information, call 020 8215 1000

Listen and learn In the 12th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to the choir On That Note, who will be performing at Wanstead Library in early December

O

ne of the aims of Redbridge Music Society is to bring a diverse range of high-standard live musical events to accessible, local east London venues at affordable prices. In December, the London-based choir On That Note will perform a particularly diverse programme of festive items at the Churchill Room in Wanstead Library. On That Note is a north London, a cappella, 13-strong choir that performs serious and light-hearted versions of classical music, popular music and jazz at festivals and fiestas around the London area. It was formed in 2015 from Guildhall Professor Scott Stroman’s renowned multi-stylistic choir, Eclectic Voices. The On That Note singers are from a wide range of professions and backgrounds. Some members are from formal musical backgrounds, others are not. However, all members are united in that they have a deep love of communal singing and are committed to very high standards of musicianship. Their repertoire, which is diverse and spans the music of seven centuries, is complemented by their own original arrangements. They meet each week under the guidance of the young award-winning film composer, arranger, producer, jazz pianist and conductor Gabriel Chernick. Gabriel studied music at Cambridge and screen composition at the National Film and Television School. From an early age, he rapidly established a reputation for himself as a skilled and versatile composer, and in August 2014 his soundtrack for David K Barnes’ adaptation of Games of Love and Chance was awarded a special commendation for original music at the Edinburgh Festival National Student Drama Festival Awards.

On That Note are now in much demand and this month will appear again at the Brandenburg Fringe Club (Covent Garden). They are currently working towards their first professional recording. At the Wanstead evening, the choir will be singing both traditional music and their own special arrangements of well-known carols and songs. Sprinkled into the mix will be a smattering of 16th-century humour, barbershop, pop and contemporary classical performances. There will be the opportunity for the audience to join in with their favourite carols should they wish to. The evening will end with the music society’s annual party, with plentiful complimentary seasonal food, drink and other refreshments. So, start your run-up to this year’s Christmas season by joining us in an evening of highquality festive entertainment. On That Note will perform at Wanstead Library on 4 December from 8pm (tickets on the door: £10; members: £7). For more information, call 07948 500 736 or visit wavidi.co/rms. Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

In the eighth of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multi-garden nature reserve – Nicola Steele suggests two things to do this month to prepare for a colourful spring next year

ith less than two months to go until the shortest day of the year, the nights are really drawing in over Wanstead. Bumblebees have hibernated in north-facing areas of soil, most species of butterfly are hiding away in their caterpillar form and many other invertebrates are preparing to spend the winter tucked up among fallen leaves (it’s great to let some pile up in the garden).

zzSnakes-head fritillary (April to May): good for damp shade; loved by bumblebees.

The warm sunny days of summer seem a long way away, but there are two things you could do this November to prepare for a colourful spring with plenty of food for pollinators.

Adopt your nearest street tree We’re lucky in Wanstead to have lots of tree-lined streets – especially as so many front gardens now have little vegetation. But did you know that planting flowers under street trees actually creates a valuable habitat for wildlife? New research has found that these little mini meadows act as steppingstone habitats between more important green spaces like parks and gardens.

Planting bulbs Autumn is the time of year for planting spring-flowering bulbs. Bulbs are a great way of adding greenery to your garden as they’re cheap to buy and easy to plant. They do well in the earth or in pots, and if you jumble a few varieties up together, they’ll reward you with a succession of flowers to brighten up your spring and provide vital food to insects emerging from winter. Aim to plant at least six bulbs together, but for bigger impact, you’ll need drifts of as many as 25 to 50 plants. They’ll come with instructions, but the general principle is to plant them with their nose or shoot upwards at a depth of about three times the size of the bulb. In the ground, keep a similar distance between each one (you can pack them more densely in a pot). Great spring bulbs for wildlife (with flowering months) include: zzSnowdrops (January to February): good for shady spots. zzCrocuses (February to March): fabulous for all types of bees; lots of colours. zzGrape hyacinths (April to May): two-toned blue and white flowers, popular with the solitary hairy-footed flower bee.

zzAlliums (June to July): taller, striking flowers with lovely seedheads. Daffodils may be colourful, but they aren’t really liked by bees!

So, if you live on a street with trees, why not adopt a tree base or two near you and create a little oasis in the tarmac for our struggling pollinators? They can be really successful, even if there isn’t much soil. All you need to do is email the council by 1 December to tell them the exact location of the tree or trees you’re adopting, then from 2019, any spraying of weedkiller on the base should cease. Next spring, you’ll be able to add some drytolerant, insect-friendly vegetation (nothing too big that will impede the footpath or road). There are loads of options: wildflowers, spring bulbs and primroses, small evergreen shrubs like hebes, lavender and thyme and perennials such as Russian sage, verbena and geraniums. We’ll be publishing more planting ideas in the Wanstead Village Directory early next year. There are some fabulous tree pits around Wanstead, and even some entire roads of planting where residents have taken on looking after all the bases in the street. Why not join the movement and help reclaim our barren roads for wildlife?
