September in Wanstead is becoming a little more exciting every year. Go back in time 12 years and the highlight of the local calendar was just a fledgling Wanstead Festival. Scroll forwards to 2010 and the festival was joined by the area's first art trail, which has quickly become one of our defining attractions.

Now, in 2014, local residents also have an abundance of diverse events and activities to take part in, as the second annual Wanstead Fringe – which, with its community-organised programme, perfectly epitomizes all that's good about Wanstead – prepares for a week of fun, entertainment and information in the run-up to this year's Wanstead Festival on 14 September.

Art trail participants will be only too aware of the work that takes place behind the scenes to plan, organise and stage such events. Liaising with shops, businesses and other trail venues, coordinating artists and group members, planning workshops and demonstrations, sourcing funds and managing events – I'm sure a longer list is available. But If we scratch another layer deeper, to reveal the stories behind the art and the artists themselves, we can catch a glimpse into another side of this community-building event, where inspiration, passion and creativity meet (see pages 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54 and 58). Indeed, it's easy to use the collective term 'community' for events such as this and overlook the all-important individual contributions that combine to form the whole experience.

One of the side effects of our ever-growing calendar of events, if not one of the key reasons for their very existence, is the support they generate for the local economy. And it's fitting that, as our local shops and businesses evolve and change over time, so too does the community that supports them. And in the same way that our High Street is a product greater than the sum of its parts, so too are the community events that are intrinsically linked in a symbiotic relationship.

This month sees the return of three popular community-spirited events that will bring creativity, fun and entertainment to the shops, community venues and public spaces of Wanstead.

Spinning the years back

Freeing your mind

A DJ specialising in retro music will be launching a 1950s night in Wanstead this month. 'Rock the Joint' at Bar Room Bar on Wanstead High Street will see DJ Luke, who may be better known as the local tool-sharpening man on a bicycle, reveal his true passion for spinning vintage vinyl records. The night, which will also include 'a splash of 1930s and 1940s vibes', will run from 7pm to 11pm on the second Thursday of each month, beginning on 11 September.

A book containing a powerful collection of real-life stories of mental illness has been published by Wanstead resident Natasha Benjamin, who first started sharing her own battle with depression on an online blog in 2012.

Local photographer to lead Wanstead photo walks

Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson, who has over 40 years of experience as a photojournalist, will be leading a series of guided walks in and around Wanstead this month, as part of the Wanstead Fringe and Art Trail Wanstead programme of events.

The walks – which

all depart from the Eightyfour gallery on Nightingale Lane – will explore the photo opportunities in Wanstead's parks and open spaces and along the River Roding.

Wanstead pub becomes pickup point for organic veg

Local businesses are being urged to hold art trail preview evenings and 'meet the artist' events to bring more trade to Wanstead this month.

A number of shops have said they will open until 7pm on 5 September – the day before the trail begins – and 9 September

(6pm to 7.30pm) has been selected by some venues as an opportunity for customers to meet those behind the work on show. Members of the newly-formed E11 Business Team are keen to get behind the trail and to encourage other business owners to do the same.

Veg bags awaiting collection at The Duke

Organic Ilford – a community-led social enterprise supplying fresh organic vegetables from small-scale farmers – has opened a new collection point in Wanstead.

The veg box scheme, which was launched across Redbridge in 2013, now offers

participants the option of collecting their produce from The Duke pub on Nightingale Lane.

Decorating Mary: repair work begins on local church

Local resident recognised for long service at Haven House

St Mary's Church on Overton Drive, which is the only Grade I listed structure in Redbridge, was closed last month as work got underway to repair and redecorate the iconic building. The first phase involved installing protection around the pulpit and the monument

to Josiah Child. Pipes were also removed from the organ, which has been shrouded in plastic sheeting.

The work, which is expected to last at least 16 weeks, will include repainting the walls and ceiling, repairing the pews and restoring broken flagstones.

Wanstead resident Don Foster has been recognised by The League of Mercy – founded in 1899 for the encouragement of voluntary work – for his long service at Haven House Children's Hospice.

Mike Palfreman of Haven House said: "The support and

commitment that Don has shown to Haven House over the past 10 years and the funds that he has raised for local life-limited children has been nothing short of remarkable."

Don has helped to raise over £400k for the Woodford Green charity.

Time to sell, for charity

Redbridge results

Local resident and Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club member David Etherton will be selling his collection of more than 80 clocks and timepieces this month, to raise money for Aspray House Care Home in Leyton, the Rotary Club's chosen charity for the year.

The clocks – many of which are train related – will range in price from £1 to £75 and will be available from the Rotary Club's stall at the Wanstead Festival on 14 September. The largest of the clocks in David's collection measures one metre in diameter.

Exam results in Redbridge have remained stable despite the national turbulence caused by changes to the examination process.

More than 69% of students across the borough achieved five GCSEs at A* to C grade, while more than 75% of students were awarded A Levels at A* to C grade. "Students, parents and teachers should feel hugely proud of themselves.

These results are further evidence of Redbridge's enduring educational excellence," said Councillor Elaine Norman.

'Grumpy Old Man' and chaser join Wanstead Fringe line-up

At this month's East of London Family History Society meeting, professional genealogist Ian Waller will be giving a presentation on the plight of adoptees, foundlings, orphans and Empire children (child migrants) in the 19th and 20th centuries. The talk will

explain how, before the advent of legal adoption in England and Wales in 1927, children were often sold, subject to baby farming or placed in the workhouse or cottage homes. The event will take place at Wanstead Library on 24 September, 7pm.

D

uring this month's Art Trail Wanstead, local residents will be able to view work at more than 70 local venues, including shops, businesses, community centres, schools and churches. Wanstead Tube station and The Manor House gastropub on the High Street, formerly Sir Winston Churchill's local HQ, are two new trail venues that will be displaying artwork for the first time. The news comes shortly after Aldersbrook Baptist Church also offered to take part.

Wanstead station will host displays and workshops on the launch day – Saturday 6 September, from 12 noon to 3pm – as well as showing art throughout the trail. And there will be plenty of other opportunities to attend drop-in art sessions, demonstrations, fairs and workshops being arranged by the trail organiser, Art Group Wanstead.

Anna Bisset's impressive public art, Peace Dove, which won a grant by Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure, will be shown at the station and will also appear at various trail events. Adults and children will be able to add to the project by creating feathers and other embellishments.

Wanstead's E11 Business Team is encouraging local shops taking part in the art trail to stay open until 7pm the night before the launch, for a preview. And some High Street businesses have come up with the idea of hosting small private views with drinks and nibbles between 6pm and 7.30pm on Tuesday 9 September. That way, they say, trail visitors can wander down the street and meet the people who've created the work on the walls and in the windows. "This 'meet the artist' initiative is really welcomed by the group as a huge step forward by the traders," says trail leader Angela Daley.

There should also be some interesting art to see even closer to home; this year, local residents are encouraged to participate in HomeFront, putting their own – or their children's – creations in front gardens or windows for all to see, with an optional theme of Make Art, Not War. The dove will be on display at The George pub after the close of the festival until the end of the month and will then go on tour in October – starting at St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook to celebrate their centenary.

Saturday 20 September, 11am to 4pm The Flamingo Fair at Wanstead Library, featuring life-drawing sessions and a wide variety of workshops and demonstrations, including cosmetic make-up guidance for adults, face-painting for children and Sally Brown's art of cake-making. (This event will go ahead despite work on the library roof ).

A week of days James Monger, manager of Age UK Redbridge, explains how this local charity likes to celebrate International Older People's Day, so much so that they are planning a whole week of activities

I

f you've got it, flaunt it! And Redbridge does, being the only local authority area that turns International Older People's Day (1 October) into a whole week, celebrating the lives and skills of older people in this borough. Partners, including the London Borough of Redbridge, Age UK Redbridge, Redbridge Institute, Vision and many more, spend all year planning in order that older people have a wonderful week and find out information to help them keep healthy and active.

Age UK Redbridge's activity centre in Wanstead – the Allan Burgess Centre at 2 Grove Park – is one of the hubs where events will happen all week for people aged 50 and over. Instead of an exhibition this year, the centre has arranged a series of activities as follows: zz Monday 29 September, 11am to 12 noon Singalong with a skilled local musician zz Tuesday 30 September, 10am to 12 noon Wartime romances – discussion and memories

zz Wednesday 1 October, 12.30pm Celebratory lunch (£5– book early) zz Thursday 2 October, 10am to 12 noon Quiz with prizes zz Friday 3 October, 10am to 12 noon A showing of a film from the 1940s Another big event will be on Wednesday 1 October at the Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford, where there will be a 'Make, Do and Mend' exhibition of crafts, with displays, demonstrations and activities, including flower arranging, woodcraft, eco craft, bulb planting, sugarcraft, embroidery, sign-writing and scented candle making. Refreshments will be available from 11am to 3pm. Last year, this event was held at Wanstead Library, but sadly, this year it has had to find a new venue as we understand repairs are needed to the library roof.

Other big events to look out for during the week include: IT workshops and exercise classes (in various venues); an information session about Age UK Redbridge at Gants Hill Library (Monday 29 September at 11am); a health and well-being fair at Valentine's Mansion (Tuesday 30 September from 10am to 3pm); a surprise musical happening outside Harrison Gibson in Ilford town centre (Thursday 2 October at 2pm); and a West End song book matinée and tea party at the Kenneth More Theatre (Friday 3 October at 2.30pm – make sure you book in advance).

Events will also be happening in local libraries, community halls and leisure centres throughout the week. Look out for a full programme in the library or leisure centre, the Allan Burgess Centre or Age UK's Redbridge office in Ilford.

The two Annies

Michael Da Silva Pearce, principal of performing arts school LIPA 4:19 Wanstead, explains how their recent production of Annie demonstrates the ethos of this fully-inclusive academy

T

he students at LIPA 4:19 Wanstead celebrated five successful years of the academy with a fully-staged performance of Annie at Ilford's Kenneth More Theatre in July for their end-of-year showcase. The show was a momentous undertaking, involving all 100 students of the school, with ages ranging from four to 16 years.

We aim to break away from the traditional stage school mentality, which puts an emphasis on creating 'little stars'. Our belief is that performing is for everyone and no one is any more important than any other performer. For this reason, LIPA is fully inclusive and involves every student at every level.

The numbers gave rise to some fantastic allsinging and dancing numbers in the show, from the sheer drudgery of the famous Hooverville scene to the spectacular NYC. Central to the production were the delightful performances of the two Annie's: Hana Ward in act one and Enya Vintila, who took over for act two. The two performers carried the show through to the happy ending where Annie has the best Christmas ever. The billionaire Oliver Warbucks was played by Saoirse Clune (act one) and Ella Blake (act two), whose beautiful rendition of Something was Missing mesmerised the audience.

The show-stopping Easy Street – sung by the trio of sly Rooster (Kito Riley-Hunte), the mean and drunken Miss Hannigan (Victoria Grennan) and the voluptuous Lily St Regis (Mimi Higgins) – was perfectly delivered in a deliciously slinky manner that this number demands. The orphans included the Early Start class of four- to six-year-olds, who joined the main cast for The Hard-knock Life and also gave their own performance of Tomorrow at the start of the interval to the delight of everyone.

performance skills, while others want to build their confidence, but all come just for the fun of it. We believe that the performing arts are for everyone. There are no auditions and all are welcome to join.

Performing Annie gave all the students a real insight into theatre and performance. The director, Mabel Clements, is an experienced actor in the West End and Broadway and was able to bring her expertise and professionalism to the show, coordinating the action on stage with the lighting, sound and scenery.

The day was a real learning experience for anyone considering going into performing arts for a career. The students got to see the mechanics of how to put a show together and I can't wait to repeat the process for all our students again next year.

LIPA 4:19 Wanstead – which is affiliated to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts – is currently accepting applications for the new academic year. Hey, big spenders Property is probably the most expensive thing you will ever buy, so it's important to do it right, says Debra Rose, a partner in the property law department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee

S

olicitors' firms are considered to be 'gateways' when it comes to money laundering. What this means is that they are targeted by criminals attempting to legitimise the proceeds of crime by buying property or other real estate. As a result, we have to get up-to-date identification for all of our clients – the vast majority of whom are decent law-abiding citizens – as well as verifying their source of funds. But it is not just the cocaine dealer walking through the door that we have to worry about.

I was recently instructed by a client that was purchasing a flat in South London. The first thing she told me was that she hadn't actually met the seller – she had been shown round the flat by the estate agent. There is nothing particularly unusual in this, but it might be a warning sign when taken into conjunction with other factors, and from the outset this was a transaction fraught with such signs.

The person instructed by the seller was not a solicitor, but a licensed conveyancer. Again, not normally a cause for concern, but it was a onewoman band with no website, and whenever I asked a question her answers were evasive.

For example, I said that since my client had not actually met the seller, would she be kind enough to let me have a certified copy of her client's ID? A simple enough request you might have thought, but it took several letters and emails before I obtained a response, and even then the copy that she sent me had not been certified as a true likeness of the seller.

My suspicion was that this was an attempt to sell a property without the owner's knowledge or consent, though I will never know if this was the case or not. Eventually, I found myself thinking: "Am I really going to send this person a substantial six-figure sum?" The Law Society website is littered with examples of con-men masquerading as lawyers and, of course, my duty was not just to my client, but also to her mortgagees.

With a heavy heart I told my client that, try as I might, I could not guarantee that I could obtain good title to the property she wanted to buy, and I was just not happy to proceed. I also told her that I had never before been in a position where I had to recommend to a client not to go ahead.

My client was remarkably sanguine – she withdrew from the transaction and ended up buying a different flat – but she said to me that since this was the most expensive thing she would ever buy, she wanted to get it right and she was very grateful to me for protecting her interest. It is one reason why you should always use a solicitor in any property law transaction.

Trail maker #4 Last month, we published articles by three artists taking part in Art Trail Wanstead, each talking about their work and inspiration. This month we continue the series, beginning with Sarah Kudirka

'm Sarah Kudirka, an award-winning professional artist. I'm excited to be taking part in my first Art Trail Wanstead, having just moved with my husband Peter and our young son to this lovely, family-friendly part of London. While my studio is still in Bethnal Green, joining the trail is a perfect way for me to connect with the local creative community.

It is great to be exhibiting my paintings in The Orange Tree interiors and home gifts shop on the High Street. Rachel Root, the shop's owner, has supported the art trail for years and has created such wonderfully appealing surroundings in which to show art. It should be interesting for people to see how my paintings look as part of stylish contemporary home interiors.

I have been a painter since graduating in the 1990s, but have rarely been as prolific as over the last few years. Getting married, having a baby and moving house are all pretty big stuff, but in between I have also created a major series of new paintings called City.Skies.London.

Fascinated by cities, architecture and urban spaces, in 2012 I began working on a simple but compelling idea: experiencing east London on foot, looking up at the sky shaped by the gaps between buildings. I take Polaroids as I'm walking to inspire a composition, then back in the studio I paint half-imagined cityscape images over the top in oils, reinventing the street scenes I snapped. Like most artists, I've always had 'day jobs' to support my parallel life as an artist and years ago I worked in the City on the stock exchange news service. Now I love making art from my forays back into the Square Mile.

I have made over 350 individual City.Skies.London paintings to date and the series is ongoing.

They occupied an entire wall of my studio like a vast urban plan until I began to split them into collections of varying sizes – from sets of three, six, 10 and 16, to one totalling 54 images, all immaculately framed in grids.

My artworks are in public and corporate collections and private homes all over the world, but this is the first time these new paintings have been displayed publicly.

The art trail also represents another first: my debut exhibition under the name Sarah Kudirka (it is Lithuanian – my husband's grandparents came to the East End in 1919). For the past 20plus years I painted, showed and won awards under my maiden name, Davenport.

Next, I want to extend my City.Skies project to other major cities, starting with Berlin maybe, but first, let's see what Wanstead thinks.

Trail maker #5 Continuing our series of articles by artists taking part in this month's Art Trail Wanstead, photographer Arnie Göbel tells his story of life through a lens, from South Africa to Woodford Bridge

am an amateur photographer, based in Woodford Bridge. I have been interested in photography since childhood and can remember running around with an old Agfa Synchro Box, taking photos of whatever grabbed my attention.

I purchased my first SLR camera, an Olympus OM10, in my late teens and used this first in Germany and then extensively in South Africa, where I spent seven years, and also in Namibia and Botswana.

When I moved to the UK in 1988, other priorities took over, but in 2007 my passion for photography was re-ignited, prompting me to move to digital. I currently photograph with a Canon SLR and a Fuji bridge camera.

I am interested in all different subject matters, but tend to favour architecture. I am also trying to build up a sports portfolio.

I am a member of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), from which I hold a Licentiate distinction and am working towards building a portfolio to gain a photographic merit from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB). I am also a member of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, where I am acting as General Secretary.

Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society is one of the oldest photographic clubs in the UK (founded in 1893) and is a member of the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies and the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.

Our programme is varied, from competitions, to talks and slide shows by professionals, tutorials on how to improve your images using a computer and outings to various locations.

We are a small and friendly club, welcoming all ages and skills, and also offer advice to members on how to come off 'auto-mode' with our 'buddy scheme'.

Trail maker #6 Continuing our series of articles by artists taking part in this month's Art Trail Wanstead, multimedia artist Robert Webb tells his story of appreciating the moment

erhaps the greatest opportunity in life is to be able to appreciate the fleeting moments. After all, our own minds constantly conspire against our wellbeing, by keeping up a near-continuous chatter of worries and fears about the past and the future, and distracting us from the beauty and wonder of what's actually around us. As one sage puts it in humorous fashion: "Why worry? Yesterday is history… and tomorrow is a mystery, but today… today is a gift. And that's why they call it the present!"

Can art help us to pause, to appreciate the moment more fully? This question has become urgent for me since my diagnosis with earlyonset Parkinson's disease a few years ago. The decay of physical faculties is inevitable for us all, and for me it is simply a little faster and earlier than usual – I am 44.

One part of my work consists of photography and video, digitally manipulated and sequenced to celebrate the ever-changing light. In a work titled A day in the life, a magnificent vista over Hollow Ponds in Wanstead Park is presented in what appears to be a back-lit photograph, but as the observer soon realises, the composition is actually in gradual transition. Almost too slowly to observe, the light is changing, and the seasons are changing. Time is distorted and runs out of order and the changing colours, cloud patterns and water reflections enact multiple dawns and dusks. We see the bare trees gradually burst into life and then die back again (thanks to a small computer powering the transition on a highdefinition screen).

Another part of my work I must credit partly to the dog. Because it is on dog walks that, as many will know, the ice is broken with a few new strangers each day – strangers who feel like friends, even if we never see them again. I love talking to people and am always surprised by the great courage and kindness they show.

In past days, High Art celebrated the lives of the saints in lavish hand drawn illuminations in

books, stained glass and paintings. But it seems to me that the people I meet every day are the real saints of our collective story, and so I seek to make contemporary 'illuminations' – a series of portraits of local heroes.

Trail maker #7 Continuing our series of articles by artists taking part in this month's Art Trail Wanstead, self-taught artist Aixa Rios tells her story of energy and healing and of Wanstead's warm welcome

Now, I am sure that my mission during my journey on this planet is to help people, through my healing art work, to absorb sensations and emotions in order for them to reconnect to their inner balance, whilst at the same time, reconnecting to my own. I believe that we are not just what we do or possess. We are too beautiful as human beings to rely and depend on possessions and material things. How can we feel so lost when our value is so great?

When someone feels attracted to any of my creations it is because an aspect of their inner self has found peace, relief or happiness, or because their soul feels at home and balanced.

It means they have embraced their personal power and have met their master guide. Every line, impression, medium and colour I apply are directed by my own master guides, because each work is being created to heal somebody in need.

Every colour has its own particular energy. My creations are focused on the chakra colours, helping the viewer find support to work on the different areas of their inner self and to create the balance they need by improving stability, courage, inhibitions, confidence, wisdom, clarity, self-esteem, love, self-control, self-expression, decisiveness, intuition and creativity.

When a customer is interested in buying any of my work, I always ask: "What aspect of your inner-self resonates with this creation?"

fter eight years of living in London and working as a Spanish and Italian language tutor for the Borough of Waltham Forest, I decided to have a break and went to live in AndalucĂ­a, Spain. Whilst there, I started experiencing visions during particular nights about creating healing art and visions about using uncommon mediums. I am a self-taught individual with no formal art training. I just listened to my inner voice and followed my inner visions as I started to feel connectivity to my shamanic South American roots and also to the peaceful Buddha figure.

In January 2013 I came back to live in London and a former Italian student, who lives in Wanstead, contacted me for more lessons. I started visiting this town more frequently. IÂ heard about the art trail and I just knocked on the door and a warm welcome is what I found from the people, the shops and the entire blissful environment. Wanstead for me is a magical town because, after living in many countries, every time I am here I feel the peace and the appreciation I need to be inspired. This is my first year in the trail and I want to thank this town, the trail organisers and the Wanstead Village Directory for appreciating and valuing my work and for giving the opportunity to the community to benefit from my healing art.

Trail maker #8 Continuing our series of articles by artists taking part in this month's Art Trail Wanstead, photographer Katie Metzler tells her story of capturing both beautiful and tragic moments around the world

'm a street photographer currently living at The Shrubbery in Wanstead. In my role as editor at a social science academic publisher, I'm fortunate enough to travel, and I use these opportunities to take pictures.

My photography aims to capture the weird, sad, surprising and beautiful moments that happen all around us every single day.

Photography gives me a chance to freeze an instant and to tell a story from it, based on a glance, a posture or an expression.

I've called this collection The Garden. Each photograph is of a woman I have never met and of whom I have only a single shot. They each wear flowers and, like cut flowers, the photos seem both lovely and tragic to me. With these images I want to tell a story about the inequalities that still exist around the world for women. These women do not know they are telling this story with me, but I imagine most of their lives will have been affected by some aspect of this inequality.

The photos in this collection were taken in Istanbul, Tokyo and northern Brazil. In Turkey, reported violence against women has risen 14fold since 2002. At the same time, there are only 63 women's shelters in a country of more than 70 million people. In Brazil, abortion is illegal, except for cases of rape or when the mother's life is in danger. The punishment for a woman performing an abortion on herself, or consenting to an abortion, is one to three years' imprisonment.

Yet, in some of the poorest parts of northeast Brazil, as many as 75% of women have been sterilized. In Japan, women's median income is two thirds that of men, making their gender pay gap twice the OECD average. And here in the UK, in the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, one in 10 women said that, since the age of 13, someone had made them have sex with them against their will. The data are shocking and when I look at these photographs I see all of these situations facing women every day, everywhere, reflected in each of these women's eyes.

Trail maker #9 Continuing our series of articles by artists taking part in this month's Art Trail Wanstead, ceramic artist Jola Spytkowska tells her story of creating objects with human characteristics

I

People often ask me where I get my ideas from and I tell them from drawing. Drawing is the tool I use to explore the images I have collected in my memory or with a camera, or the objects I have found. Drawings are always my preparation before making in clay. My drawings can either be focused on a particular object or intuitive, freely associating with the shapes I have seen during the day. The main focus behind the drawings is my love of figurative work, both human and animal, combined with an interest in fantasy, myths, magic and metamorphosis.

I use drawing to playfully merge the shapes of objects with human and animal elements to see what results I can get, and I find that there is many a creature waiting to emerge from some of the objects around me. The latest of these is a series of handbags I have been making. I realised that handbags have personalities too! These I make from slabs of clay, which I cut out using paper templates in a similar way to dress making (or bag making in this instance). I done a lot of sewing when I was younger and this has had a big influence on the way I work.

I am looking forward to taking part in Art Trail Wanstead this year, having thought about it in years past and enjoyed looking at other artists' work in the various venues. I am very fond of Wanstead. It has an English village charm about it and is only up the road from where I live in Forest Gate. I particularly like the library and the changing exhibitions in the foyer display case, and look forward to seeing who is coming to do a book talk. About two years ago, I exhibited some of my own work in the library. I often shop in Wanstead and meet friends for coffee, and I have done some of the art classes at Wanstead House, which is a great venue.

first studied Ceramics at Braintree College and later did a postgraduate degree at Goldsmiths College London. I currently work in three areas: my studio work; teaching; and public and private commissions. I design and make unique and quirky ceramics. These are often one-offs, with some limited editions.

There is a really good feeling of community in Wanstead, which is sorely lacking in some places.

The art trail is a great thing to have because local artists have the opportunity to show their work in informal settings to their local community, and it is good for the community to be aware of the artists in their midst. It makes art more accessible to people who may not be able to go to an art gallery and it creates more bonding for the community, which has a beneficial effect on the psyche.

Trail maker #10 Continuing our series of articles by artists taking part in this month's Art Trail Wanstead, cartoonist and mural artist Sam Cowan tells her story of creating a weekly comic strip

I

've always loved doodling and I've always loved words, so I leapt at the chance last autumn to take a short course in creating comics as memoir. It was an entry into a wonderful new world of reading graphic novels and of using cartoons to express my thoughts and stories, so a big thank you to teacher Sarah Lightman for opening up a door through which I jumped.

Weekly topics so far have been about everything from world peace to blackberry picking. I am creating a special edition for Art Trail Wanstead, which The Art Shop (117C High Street, Wanstead) will be selling for a £1 minimum donation. All proceeds from this will be going towards the Plant A Billion Trees initiative in Brazil's Atlantic rainforest – an ecologically important area that has lost 90% of its trees through deforestation. I hope that you will buy a copy and contribute to at least one new tree being planted in the world.

Of course, if you want to plant many new trees, you are welcome to become a subscriber and receive a weekly comic in your inbox from now until 16 January 2015 (see website for details).

I'm also proud to be painting a mural at Wanstead Tube station for the trail. It will link in with the trail theme Make Art Not War. My artwork is often filled with people of different skin colours, ethnicities and beliefs, all smiling and getting along splendidly!

I first painted on a wall as part of a volunteer redecoration project at a homeless shelter. As soon as I had painted my first flower on the pastel-blue canteen wall, I was hooked. I've brightened up rooms and walls in many diverse places since, ranging from an eco-kindergarten

After my four classes with Sarah were up, I knew that my relationship with comics was far from over – it was just the beginning. So, I set myself the challenge of creating a comic strip every week for an entire year, with all proceeds from subscriptions going towards international tree-planting and reforestation programmes – Cartoons 4 Trees was born.

in a national park to a bomb shelter on a mountaintop; from a drug rehab centre for young mothers to hoardings on a local high street. Beautifying space and injecting it with liveliness and cheer gives me a real buzz.

Last year, when painting a mural on the high street in Chingford, many passers by stopped for a chat and shared how much they loved art but 'weren't good at it', 'couldn't find the time' or 'loved art at school but hadn't done it since'. My reply to them was always the same: "Just do it!" – especially if it makes you happy.

"I

f my parents had their way, I'd be a lawyer, a teacher, an accountant or a scientist. Something safe…" says Vanessa Downie over a coffee in The Larder, "…and I did try teaching, I was a primary school teacher for six years, but it didn't work."

Vanessa realised that she couldn't keep those around her happy and also be happy about the path she was taking herself. When she made the hard decision to leave teaching and follow her love of dance, she marked the occasion by changing her name: "Mum was really good, she just went with it, but some of my friends… they're still mourning the loss of the old name and still want me to go back into teaching too." That's a shame, Vanessa's enthusiasm and commitment for the path she is creating for herself is clear.

Vanessa's life is now all about dance and communities. She started by teaching dance arts in schools, then became an artist in her own right and is now working hard on developing the dance and community theme.

Vanessa sometimes works on her own behalf, but increasingly in partnership with a Filipino friend as Ajos Dance. Ajos takes its name from the poverty-stricken village in the Philippines from which her friend has come. He has also set up the Ajos Trust, through which he is building a library for the destitute town with Architects For Humanity, and the dance company works on similar themes; supporting humanitarianism and empowering communities. Vanessa explains: "Through dance we ask people to think about how they got to where they are, help them address pain and sadness through dance and with themed questions on the walls.

The idea is you come across a question and think."

Ajos Dance has not yet been running for two years, but they've already achieved quite a lot. Their performance work, which is raw and emotional, is designed to make people think: "As a choreographer, I don't want my audience to feel comfy when they see me dancing, and that's why I've developed a style from physical theatre that is often called 'grotesque'. We also like it that the audience doesn't necessarily know what the dance is about. We want to stimulate people to think, and to use what they see for themselves," she explains.

Ajos Dance's philosophy tied in so well with a quote by William Morris ('I want everyone to think for themselves') that they were invited to perform at the William Morris Gallery. From that arose their first big project, to organise the first multi-location dance festival in Walthamstow next year.

It won't surprise you to learn that Ajos doesn't yet bring in enough to pay the bills, so Vanessa has found a job that supports her passion to help people by working for Khyal Arts, a new enterprise that seeks to promote and increase participation in the arts of northern India, Bangladesh and Pakistan across age and cultural divides, giving a main focus to music and dance in Waltham Forest. "Although working for Khyal Arts is a part time job, it sometimes feels like more and sometimes takes over my life in a similar way to teaching. But I like it, it's nice, because working with Khyal Arts catapults me into the community and supports me in bringing people together, uniting them wherever they're from as I tell them how amazing Khyal Arts is."

Given the opportunity, Vanessa will wax lyrical about the power of dance to heal pain and enable personal growth, as well as the importance of community. Look out for her dance classes and the work she is doing with Khyal Arts and Ajos Dance as both are an outreach that you might not have found before.

Wanstead Park 1812–1825 The ovvners of

A

t the time of her marriage in 1812, Catherine Tylney-Long, owner of Wanstead Park, was extremely wealthy. From her father's family and that of his uncle, Earl Tylney, she had inherited extensive estates in several counties. As well as the Long family's ancestral seat at Draycot Cerne, in Wiltshire, there was: Tylney Hall in Hampshire; Athelhampton in Dorset; Wanstead, Rochford Hall, Felstead, High Ongar and Fyfield in Essex; Roydon Hall in Hertfordshire; and land in Yorkshire and Northamptonshire. In all, this amounted to 23,000 acres of farms and parkland, added to which she owned several London town houses.

In the 21st of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Richard Arnopp of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands tells how the Park enjoyed a spectacular rebirth under William and Catherine PoleTylney-Long-Wellesley, but within a few years, dark clouds began to gather

Catherine's new husband, Hon William Pole-Wellesley, brought to the marriage an illustrious name, the prospect of a title, but little money of his own. William's ancestors were Anglo-Irish gentry, originally named Colley. The family's rise to prominence began with his great-grandfather, who was ennobled in 1746 as Baron Mornington and assumed the name of Wesley (later Wellesley) after inheriting the estates of his cousin, Garret Wesley. The 2nd Baron was promoted in the Irish Peerage in 1760 as Earl of Mornington and Viscount Wellesley, but was most notable for his gifted offspring, no less than four of whom were to be raised to the Peerage in their own right. William Pole-Wellesley's father, a minor politician, was created Lord Maryborough in 1803. He was far eclipsed, however, by his elder brother Richard and his younger brother Arthur, both of whom became celebrated military commanders. The latter, who also twice briefly served as Prime Minister, was none other than the 1st Duke of Wellington.

William Pole-Wellesley had been a difficult child, and an even more difficult adolescent.

His family connections had brought him positions in the army and diplomatic service, which his laziness and irresponsibility quickly caused to be terminated. He had also run

up debts and got into scrapes with women.

Catherine's mother had doubts about her daughter's suitor, notwithstanding her own friendship with his mother. Catherine herself had received a number of letters warning her not to marry that "reptile Pole". However, his charm and persistence had won out, and she ignored the advice. Nonetheless, some steps were taken to protect her assets. Catherine's estates were entailed on the first son of the union and she was to be guaranteed an allowance of £13,000 a year. As long as that was paid, William had a life interest in the estates, on which the couple had the power to raise a mortgage of up to £100,000.

William and Catherine assumed by licence the ungainly surname "Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley", though they informally used Long-Wellesley.

They decided at the outset to use Wanstead as their main residence: its magnificence and suitability for large-scale entertaining, combined with its proximity to London, made it eminently suitable for an aspiring politician.

William's ambitions in this field were advanced with the help of his wife's money, and he was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in October 1812.

Over the next two years, Wanstead House was lavishly refurbished, with £60,000 reputedly being spent on carpets and curtains alone.

A newspaper report in 1814 said that when the redecoration was completed: "The whole of the interior will present one uniform blaze of burnished gold". Another source tells us, at about the same time, that William LongWellesley was "fitting up Wanstead House in a style of magnificence, exceeding even Carlton House, preparatory to the baptism of his infant son, and also in expectation of the return of his uncle, Lord Wellington, in the spring, in the event of a general peace, when an entertainment will be given at Wanstead House, of which the private hospitalities of England, however celebrated, furnish no precedent in expense, variety, and extent, since the days of Cardinal Wolsey". When this grand fete was held, it was attended by the Prince Regent and various foreign sovereigns.

William Long-Wellesley also commissioned considerable work on the gardens of Wanstead House. Humphry Repton and Lewis Kennedy both produced proposals, some of which were acted upon and are still traceable today. In

particular, the lake system was rationalised and new plantations of trees made on the site of The Reservoir and the Square Pond. Avenues were planted in a 'Union Jack' configuration across the eastern side of The Plain, and a rustic bridge erected across the Ornamental Water next to the Grotto. Kennedy produced plans for greatly enlarging the new American Garden, but these seem never to have been implemented. By 1818, when the plans were submitted, his client's seemingly inexhaustible supply of money was already running out.

William Long-Wellesley's extravagance has become proverbial, with stories of golden guineas being scattered to the crowds as he rode out to the hunt. However, simple ostentation and waste were not the primary causes of his ruin. An important drain on his finances was the pursuit of his political ambitions. In the years after Waterloo, LongWellesley's election campaigns are known to have cost him tens of thousands of pounds.

He also gambled heavily, though he later claimed that his debts from that cause were "exaggerated". In addition, he claimed that he had suffered unexpected losses which were not of his making: "I found that I had been robbed to an enormous amount by the person who had the control and management of my large expenditure at Wanstead for upwards of three years. The debt in which this man involved me amounting to about £50,000".

The truth or otherwise of Long-Wellesley's attempts at self-exculpation is anybody's guess, as many of his records were – perhaps conveniently – lost in a fire in the 1830s.

However, while it is difficult to reconstruct precisely what happened, it is indisputable that a large part of Catherine's immense inheritance was dissipated in a few short years.

Next month, we shall see how Wanstead House came to be lost and Catherine Long-Wellesley died, abandoned for another woman.

PCSO Alan Winston offers some advice on how to avoid succumbing to the many and varied fraudulent tactics that criminals will use to part you from your hard-earned money

B

eware of bogus callers and tricksters who will use any method they can to con or steal from you. Remember, anyone may become a victim of these crimes. It is true that these chameleons of the criminal world often target the most vulnerable members of our community. We are, however, all possible targets in the eyes of the criminals, we just might not know it.

Charities lose out on hundreds of thousands of pounds each year in donations, as organised gangs target our generosity. Charity collection bags have been cloned and genuine bags stolen from outside homes. Some criminals will even stand out in the street shaking fake collection buckets – begging is not allowed.

We are also aware of some individuals going door-to-door, collecting for false charities and sponsored events. Please do not give out cash at the door – visit the Charity Commission website (charitycommission.gov.uk) to make sure your donations are going to the charity you want and not into a criminal's pocket.

Email scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. There are still the occasional 'friend stranded abroad' or 'prince needing help to secure his inheritance' messages spamming our inboxes, but with the increase in people using internet banking, the cons are evolving.

A seemingly genuine email from your bank, telling you that your security information needs checking, is nothing more than a link to a fake web page that wants your card details. Delete emails from contacts you do not know, avoid clicking on links, even if it is to unsubscribe. You should also avoid opening attachments and make sure that your anti-virus software is up to date. Get a second opinion on any mail you are unsure about and do not reply to any junk mail, as if you do, this can lead to more unwanted mail.

Letters with basic true information are also being sent out to elderly residents about an investment a 'late relative' has made abroad. The criminals are willing to act on your behalf to collect it, for

a small up-front fee. You should also remember that you can't win a lottery that you have not entered, so be aware. A real lottery will also not ask you to pay money to collect your winnings.

Phone calls claiming to be from the police or your bank, informing you that your bank card has been compromised, have also been reported by victims. After gaining your confidence, the caller will send a courier to collect your card.

Confidence is gained by asking you to phone your bank, they then intercept this call by not hanging up. To avoid being a victim, use a different phone or make sure you have a dialling tone and that it's not a recording. You could also consider signing up to the Telephone Preference Service to prevent future marketing calls.
