Welcome... By the year 2050, for the first time in human history, there will be more people over 60 years of age than children in the world. Almost 700 million people are currently over the age of 60, but within just 30 years or so, two billion people (over 20% of the world’s population) will be 60 or older. These United Nations statistics give some insight into the changing dynamics of the world around us. A UN analysis of these figures goes on to urge that “enhanced attention to the particular needs and challenges faced by many older people is clearly required.” On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons. But here in Wanstead and across Redbridge, this annual mark of respect for our elders has grown into a six-day celebration of maturity, recognising the achievements of older people and the contributions they make to society and the economy (£61bn, in case you were wondering, according to Age UK’s chief economist). From comedy to quizzes, music and yoga, the Older People’s Week programme of events for our borough’s senior residents is as diverse as it is honourable in its ethos that age is “no barrier to being involved in community life.” Many see ageing as something negative, an association with decline and loss. Yet, psychologists tell us we should keep following our dreams, whatever our age. Anne Karpf, author of How to Age, puts it best in this anecdote: “A 100-year-old woman was being interviewed on radio when she was asked if she had regrets. ‘If I’d known I’d live to 100, I’d have taken up the violin at 40,’ she said. ‘By now, I’d have been playing for 60 years!’” Happy ageing. Lee Marquis, Editor

Library exhibition to tell the stories of London’s black British footballers An exhibition charting the history of London’s black professional footballers will be on show at Wanstead Library this October as part of Black History Month celebrations. “When black footballers first became a feature of the game in Britain their presence and Fred Corbett passion for the sport was widely discredited. Racial abuse and prejudice has unfortunately been part of British footballing history,” said Judith Garfield of Eastside Community Heritage, which has compiled the display. Among the player’s stories is that of Fred Corbett (1893–1924), who worked as a labourer for Thames Ironworks

Down’s syndrome and eugenics

More water, less plastic

The East London Humanists will host a discussion about Down’s syndrome (DS) and eugenics at Wanstead Library this month. “In Iceland, due to medical advances and liberal abortion laws, Down’s syndrome has virtually been eliminated. But is that the sort of society we really want?” asks June Scott, the mother of a woman with DS who will lead the discussion on 22 October from 7.30pm (visitors welcome; free). Visit wavidi.co/elh

Redbridge Council is looking at the possibility of installing a free water refill point in Wanstead – possibly on George Green – similar to that unveiled in Valentines Park last month. “This will be great news for Wanstead, enabling people to contribute positively to the ongoing battle to reduce plastic use,” said Councillor Paul Donovan. The initiative is a partnership with the #OneLess Drinking Foundation Fund.

Redbridge Music Society (RMS) will welcome a young soprano to Wanstead this month as it celebrates the opening of its 70th season. “Catriona Hewitson has sung key roles in many operas and this year sang at the Edinburgh International Festival. She currently holds the prestigious Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist award,” said RMS spokesperson David Bird. The event – which takes place at Wanstead Library on 30 October from 8pm (members: £7; visitors: £10) – will include a variety of operatic arias. Call 07948 500 736

Residents are invited to comment on the planning application for new leisure facilities on Redbridge Lane West in Wanstead. The proposals – which include improvements to Wanstead High School – will involve the construction of a three-storey block, with a basement containing a dining hall and kitchen space, classrooms and a 25m swimming pool. A new accessible entrance to the leisure centre will also be created closer to the road. A decision on the application is anticipated for November. Visit wavidi.co/poolcomment

Edvard Munch-inspired art trail workshop was a scream

NEW WANSTEAD CLASS

Gentle Flow Yoga Wednesdays 8pm - 9.15pm

Redbridge Drama Centre, E18 (£12) Participants of all ages learned how to recreate Edvard Munch’s The Scream at the Wanstead Festival last month during one of many Art Trail Wanstead workshops. The free sessions were led by artist Eliyah Qureshi, founder of Barkingside Art Club, and supported by trail sponsor The Stow Brothers. The choice of painting related to the trail’s ‘human condition’ theme. Other unusual highlights of the ninth annual trail included graffiti and murals, interactive work at Christ Church and public participation via postcard art.

Carnival drumming workshops for youngsters in Aldersbrook

If poetry and fun are what you seek, take part in Older People’s Week

A youth services consultant with a lifelong love of samba music has launched carnival drumming workshops for 12- to 19-year-olds in Aldersbrook. “My motivation is simply to add to the comparatively wonderful range of learning opportunities for local children and young people from which both my children continue to benefit. I also have a lot of drums which I simply cannot play alone!” said Stephen Henfrey. Lessons take place at St Gabriel’s Church on Mondays from 4pm and 5.30pm (£1 per week). Call 07971 743 131

A programme of events and activities will take place across Redbridge this month to celebrate OIder People’s Week and to spread the message that age is not a barrier in staying active and being involved in community life. The Redbridge Rhymesters – a poetry group for over-50s – will be among those taking part in the celebrations with a pet-themed poetry workshop at the Allan Burgess Centre on 2 October from 10.30am. Other events in Wanstead include a comedy show and lunch with local dignitaries. Call 020 8989 6338

Snaresbrook Primary School opens edible playground

Following almost a year of work by pupils and staff, Snaresbrook Primary School officially opened its edible playground last month. The project – which has seen a large part of the playground area turned over to vegetable growing – is part of a Trees For Cities initiative. “This is a great idea, getting the kids involved with growing their own food at such an early stage. It is so important that we all make that connection with the earth, getting our hands dirty as it were,” said Wanstead Village councillor Paul Donovan. Exhibition of (modern) photographs to mark historic club’s anniversary

Derek B (1965–2009)

A photography exhibition will be held at Wanstead House from 6 to 19 October to celebrate the Woodford & Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary. “On 9 October 1893 the Woodford Photographic Society was formed [the Wanstead connection was added at a later date]. This makes us one of the oldest photographic clubs in the UK,” said David Tyrrell. The group meets on the first and third Monday of the month at the same venue (first three meetings are free). Visit wavidi.co/wwps

Redbridge Museum in Ilford will celebrate the life of former Woodford resident Derek B – one of the first British rap stars – this October as part of Black History Month. In 1988 Derek had a top 20 hit with Good Grove and on the back of this success he became the first British rapper to appear on Top of the Pops. A display of Derek’s records and photographs from his childhood will be on show until 29 December. Derek’s stepfather will also be giving a free talk at the museum about Derek’s life on 17 October from 6.30pm. Call 020 8708 2317

Wanstead and Woodford Chess Club launches junior coaching

Local artist prepares work for Essex Art Club autumn exhibition

Wanstead and Woodford Chess Club – which meets at Wanstead House – has launched coaching sessions for eight- to 12-year-olds. “Wanstead and Woodford Chess Club actively encourages junior members and believes that learning to develop their chess skills helps them develop as young people. Sessions will involve formal coaching materials as well as competitive play,” said chess coach Ben Harte. Coaching for juniors takes place during term time on Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm (£25 per term). Visit wavidi.co/juniorchess

Wanstead resident Irene Thomas will be one of many Essex Art Club members displaying work in the group’s annual autumn exhibition at Wanstead House next month. “I have been painting and drawing since I was a child… My work is mainly in watercolour and oils and I like to tackle a variety of subjects. I have recently been concentrating on landscapes in oil but I still enjoy painting flowers and I will be showing some of this work in the exhibition on 3 and 4 November,” said Irene. Launch of ‘refreshed’ Redbridge Council Local Forums

Exciting community projects to follow conservation work at St Mary’s

Redbridge Council has ‘refreshed’ the format of its Local Forums. “To kick-start a new collaborative approach, the first forum in each neighbourhood will be an opportunity to agree priorities for their area,” said a council spokesperson. Meetings will be held three times a year in each of the borough’s four neighbourhoods. Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park wards are part of the West Neighbourhood, with the first forum scheduled for 19 November at All Saints’ Church in Woodford Green. Visit wavidi.co/fm

Restoration work began on St Mary’s Church in Wanstead last month. Paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Parish of Wanstead – which has been consulting on the potential closure of the church – the work will repair the Grade I listed building’s fractured portland stone facade and the rusted iron cramps which tie the masonry together. “A wide range of exciting community projects associated with these important heritage conservation works are planned, and details will be released shortly,” said Rev Jack Dunn.

Postcards from Art Trail Wanstead display now on sale in aid of charity

Community triumph: packed festival follows ‘most amazing Fringe yet’

Postcard art exhibition organiser Eugene Coyle

Residents gathered on Christchurch Green for last month’s Wanstead Festival

Postcards that were created and sent in by members of the public and artists for an Art Trail Wanstead display last month are now available for sale. “You can view and buy these small works of art to help Leading Our Lives, a charity for local young people with speech and communication disorders. Pop into The Stow Brothers, 117a High Street, Wanstead, where the postcards will be displayed until the end of this month,” said exhibition organiser Eugene Coyle. “Most of them will be for sale, and the suggested donation is £5 each.”

Last month’s Wanstead Fringe and Wanstead Festival were a triumph of community involvement. “This year was the most amazing Fringe yet, with nearly every event sold out. We had nearly 800 people at the theatre, more than 100 at the opera, three sold-out comedy nights, one sold-out comedy afternoon for kids, 120 jumble trail stalls and 300 at the Kinema,” said organiser Giles Wilson. The Fringe’s week-long programme preceded the annual Wanstead Festival, which itself was attended by an estimated 5,000 people.

F IRST CLASS ART Organising th e postcard art exhibition as part of Art Tra Wanstead la il st month was a ‘very interest ing project to work on’, say Eugene Coy s le To advertise, call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

L

ast month’s Wanstead postcard art exhibition asked local residents to create a piece of art and post it to us. Organising the display afforded me an opportunity to engage with the community and to make a valuable contribution to the local art scene. I met some very colourful characters and hopefully widened the appeal of the art trail beyond the borders of east London, having received entries from as far afield as Holland, Spain, France and Germany. Some of the most heartening feedback I received was that the project encouraged participants who would not normally have considered entering work in the trail. Entrants have said this opportunity revitalised their interest in art, having not made any work for several years, and that they hope to continue with their rediscovered creative side. That kind of reaction is incredibly rewarding and has made the hard work even more worthwhile. I found everyone very supportive and open to engaging with the concept of producing a creative postcard and letting it go. This was born out by the 140 or so entries I received through the post in a variety of mediums. The artists used painting, drawing, written word, collage, printing, mixed media and photography to convey their own personal interpretation of the art trail theme, the human condition. Two of the submitted art genres I have been particularly impressed with personally are works using the written word as the basis of their creativity and some of the more ‘abstract’ ideas. Some works were monotone and others vibrant colour; there were linear drawings and random shapes, literal interpretations and more ethereal responses to the theme. Some entries explored serious themes, such as the First World War, mental health and issues around smoking, while others embraced the

more whimsical nature of humans, love and the beauty surrounding us. It was a sheer delight to observe the array of originality arriving through the post, and I found myself imagining the characters behind the works, many of whom will remain anonymous and others I had the pleasure of meeting at trail events. The fascinating part of displaying the works anonymously, and as a group exhibition, is that it is left entirely to the viewer to decide what the work means to them and what emotion they elicit from it. I am hopeful the success of the project will encourage others to get involved in the next trail – which will be the 10th – and help it to grow further by bringing their own ideas. It has been a privilege to witness the level of imagination and creativity that went into the works and I believe it made a visually exciting display across the two venues, The Stow Brothers estate agents and Wanstead Library. If you didn’t get a chance to see it, The Stow Brothers display will continue this month (with some of the cards also available to buy for £5 each in aid of charity) due to the wonderful support of the team there and marketing manager Victoria Kearney. I would be grateful for any feedback and expression of interest in participating in future postcard art events, or the art trail in general. Georgian remains Georgina Green will lead a walk around Wanstead this month looking at what remains of the Georgian era. Here, the local historian takes a look at Wanstead Grove, which once stood just off the High Street

T

he Honourable Anne Rushout (c. 1766–1849) inherited Wanstead Grove in 1817 when she was about 50 years old. It was previously owned by her uncle, George Bowles (c. 1732–1817), who had inherited the house and other property when his father, Humphry, died in 1784. The Grove had been built around 1690 for Sir Francis Dashwood (c. 1658–1724) and was typical of the architectural style of that time, with a three-storey central block flanked by single-storey wings. The estate covered land east of the High Street. George Bowles was a man of great cultivation and refinement and he preferred to make his home at Wanstead Grove, which already contained many fine pictures. He added considerably to this, acquiring 49 paintings by Angelica Kauffmann, making his the largest collection of her work in any single possession. George had travelled widely in his youth and also had an extensive library. He followed the fashion by laying out pleasure gardens in his estate. George Bowles became High Sheriff of Essex in 1785, the year after his father died, which implies George was already well known and respected in the county where he must have been an active magistrate for many years. George never married but he probably did a good deal of entertaining at Wanstead Grove, when his youngest sister Rebecca acted as his hostess. George was clearly fond of Rebecca, and when she died in 1816, her place as his hostess was taken by her daughter, Anne Rushout, who made her home with her uncle. When Anne inherited Wanstead Grove it was over 120 years old and she decided to rebuild the house in a more modern style.

Wanstead Grove, drawn by JP Neale, engraved by JC Varrall (1830)

This was finished by 1822 and is illustrated and described in one of the volumes of Jones’ Views of the Seats, Mansions, Castles Etc of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England. This mentions that “the Gardens at Wanstead Grove are laid out in the style of Le Notre, but are most remarkable for the American plants, which here flourish in a pre-eminent degree and grow to a large size.” Anne painted many watercolour pictures of her parkland, showing many beautiful mature trees, and four were purchased by Redbridge Museum in 1999. When Anne died aged 82, the house and estate passed to other members of the Bowles family but were later sold to Sir Fowell Buxton for £9,250. Speculative building on the estate began in 1885. The first roads laid out were Grove Road, Grove Park and The Avenue. Wanstead Grove was demolished in 1889 and nothing remains to show of the site. However, there are a few surviving echoes of the Georgian era from around the edges of the estate and these will be explained on the walk. Georgina’s walk (hosted by Redbridge Heritage Service) will depart from the fountain on George Green, Wanstead on 15 October at 2pm (free; booking required). An identical walk on 11 October is fully booked. Call 020 8708 7400

Angels in Aldersbrook Having explored the realm of angels, Fr Martyn Hawkes of St Gabriel’s Church is keen to use the spiritual beings to improve connections between all religions at a festival in Aldersbrook this month

S

t Gabriel is our patron saint, the name given to the church back in 1914 when St Gabriel’s Aldersbrook was dedicated. He’s best known, of course, as the angel who visits Mary to announce she will give birth to Jesus, and is one of the more vivid illustrations of the connection between heaven and earth. So, in many ways, it makes perfect sense for us to celebrate angels in our church. I was fortunate enough last summer to enjoy a period of study leave during which I decided to explore more deeply the figure of Gabriel and the realm of angels more generally. During this time, I encountered the weird and the wacky, the sceptical and the devoted, mainly through reading and artwork. I found myself growing in fascination with the fact that angels seem to have an almost unique ability to connect across the whole spiritual spectrum. In a time when religions are often set in opposition to one another, and those in mainstream religious traditions and alternative or New Age movements are mutually suspicious, I wondered whether a festival of angels might provide an opportunity to make some connections.

and All Angels (29 September), and a time when we normally have our own patronal celebration. This year, we’ve hopefully made it something special: a flower festival and artwork and sculpture display (open Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October from 12 noon to 5pm) with refreshments available.

Many of the same angels play a key part in Judaism, Islam and Christianity and have their devotees in many other spiritual practices, both old and new. I also thought that even the most ardent of atheists might find a way to make a symbolic connection to the world of angels, if only as emblems of moments in our lives where we experience something ‘beyond’, something of the depth of our existence in this world.

And, as a church, it wouldn’t be complete without our own services, which will be special on Sunday 7 October. The Bishop of Barking Peter Hill will be with us at 10am for a festival Eucharist and we will enjoy a festival Evensong at 6pm to complete the festivities.

Hence, the Festival of Angels was conceived. It is taking place close to the Christian festival of Michaelmas, the celebration of St Michael

The church will be full of many and various depictions of angels from all ages and traditions. There will also be music on the Saturday afternoon with contributions particularly from the young. In the evening on Saturday, from 7.30pm, we’re hosting an open-mic event with music and poetry from those who would like to take part, themed, of course, around angels.

The St Gabriel’s Church Festival of Angels will take place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October. For more information, email vicar@stgabrielsaldersbrook.org.uk or visit stgabrielsaldersbrook.org.uk

21 century divorce st

With the government making a move towards no-fault divorces, Jonathan Diamond from local solicitors Wiseman Lee explains why he believes this will make the system fit for the 21st century

R

ecent research from Oxford University demonstrates the most common reason for a divorce after the summer months is unreasonable behaviour and, in fact, this was the reason given for more than half of divorces in 2016, the year from which the most recent data is available. At present in the UK there is no form of instant no-fault divorce, despite many judges and the legal profession calling for such a change to current legislation. However, if the government consultation paper on no-fault divorce becomes law, it will mark the greatest change to this country’s divorce laws since the Divorce Reform Act 1969. Currently, in order to divorce, a spouse must be able to demonstrate one of the following reasons for the breakdown of the marriage: zz Unreasonable behaviour: one person has behaved in a way that has resulted in the marriage irretrievably breaking down. Specific examples of this behaviour, including time and frequency, must be demonstrated to the courts.

zz One or both of the spouses has committed adultery: the divorce proceedings must begin within six months of the act of adultery taking place. zz Two years’ separation: divorce can be granted if both individuals have lived separate lives for at least two years and both agree the marriage is over. You don’t have to have been living in separate homes to use this reason and it is considered the most amicable split currently available. zz Five years’ separation: if both spouses have lived separate lives for at least five years,

then a divorce can be granted. In this case, the other person doesn’t have to agree to the divorce. zz Desertion: where one person leaves without good reason, then desertion can be given as a reason for divorce. This can be extremely difficult to prove and the divorcing party will need to be able to show the mental intent to leave has been there for at least two years. The current system is cumbersome and obtaining a divorce can be a drawn-out process, often putting spouses on a combative footing. If family law is changed, spouses will still obtain a divorce based on irretrievable breakdown but would no longer have to cite one of the above ‘faults’. If these changes come about, it is still likely the divorce process will take some months to achieve but many would agree that a no-fault divorce system would make it fit for the 21st century. Join the (tea) party

Gill James is a coordinator of the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Contact the Elderly Tea Party Group. Hosting regular social events for local older people, the group are keen to welcome more volunteers

A

lan, Betty, Grace, Rene, Len, June, Rosemary, Dennis and Doreen. What do these nine local people all have in common? They are all in their late 80s and 90s and they all belong to the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Contact the Elderly Tea Party Group. This cheerful club meets once a month for tea and to tell interesting stories and jokes. They don’t discuss their ailments and they really like cake. Contact the Elderly is a charity which aims to help combat loneliness among the elderly in a very simple and effective way. The local tea party group is run by two coordinators (myself and Roger Godbold), who arrange a rota of drivers and hosts. The group has been providing teas at home and occasional outings for the guests since 2012. Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for tea, talk and companionship before being returned home. We would like to recruit more hosts and more drivers to be part of our group. If you think you might like to help out, but don’t want to commit, please get in touch and come and observe one of our teas. There should be at least five volunteer drivers in a group. All you need is a full driver’s licence, valid insurance and access to a car. As a driver, we ask you to supply two references and we also take out a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) or a Protecting Vulnerable Groups check (PVG) before you start as a volunteer. Drivers commit to as many Sunday afternoons as they want. The monthly tea starts at 3pm and finishes at 5pm. Mostly, drivers stay for the tea and join in the chat.

Hosts provide an afternoon tea lasting about two hours for six to eight older guests and two or three drivers. A big teapot is required as is a downstairs or ground-floor toilet and easy access to your house (not too many steps to your front door). Hosts also need enough seating for eight or nine older people. Our hosts commit to one or two tea parties a year. The group coordinators will arrange dates and confirm numbers. By volunteering with Contact the Elderly, you can find enjoyment and fulfilment in helping to make a real difference to the lives of older people who are isolated from family and friends. Studies show volunteering can improve both your mental and physical health, boost self-esteem and help you become more socially connected. “Both my grandmas, who I was very close to, had recently passed away and I thought it sounded nice. I have a car and it doesn’t take up too much of your time, you just make it part of your life,” said one volunteer driver. I

n the early 1900s, Wanstead was a village with a small population in rural Essex, remaining so until the 1920s. However, with the building of the railways, the population of the Walthamstow and Leytonstone areas greatly increased, which impacted on Wanstead. It is against this background that the recorded history of the Wanstead Catholic community goes further back than the building of the present church. Fr William O’Grady, the parish priest of St George’s in Walthamstow, opened a mission in Wanstead after buying a small brick building seating about 100 worshippers in Hall Road, the present Gardner Close Estate. He celebrated the first mass in Wanstead since the Reformation there on Christmas Day 1910, with mass continuing there until 1918. Subsequently, Fr O’Grady invited the Sisters of Mercy to Wanstead in December 1917 and they opened their convent at 57 Cambridge Park with the outbuildings being converted into a temporary church. However, this soon became too small to accommodate the increasing numbers.

east aisle was opened in 1934 and the west aisle in 1940, thus completing the structure of the church as seen today, at a total cost of £17,203. There have been only four parish priests, with each incumbent making changes. Canon Hemming (in office 1952–1970) built Our Lady of Lourdes School and Monsignor Creede (1970–2000) changed the orientation of the altar to face the congregation. The present parish priest, Canon Sammon, with advice from the Parish Pastoral Council,

The first parish priest, Fr Basil Booker, who had been a chaplain in the First World War, was appointed in 1919 and the urgency for a permanent church was already apparent. Money was needed, and with generous donors and fundraising, he purchased a market garden in Cambridge Park for this purpose. Geoffrey Raymond of Scoles & Raymond was appointed as the architect, and building started in the spring of 1927 with the blessing of the foundation stone by Arthur Doubleday, the Bishop of Brentwood, in July that year. The centre aisle was soon completed and the church, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, was opened on 14 October 1928. The Our Lady of Lourdes Church is located at 51 Cambridge Park, Wanstead. For more information, call 020 8989 2074 or visit ourladyoflourdeswanstead.com A newly written History of the Parish will be available from the parish office in late October.

made an application to Redbridge Council to build a much-needed and longed-for Parish Pastoral Centre. The proposed design was in keeping with the appearance of the church, being mainly of brick similar in colour to the existing structure. The Grotto of Our Lady and St Bernadette was subsequently re-sited to the western side of the church. With local authority permission received, construction commenced in the autumn of 2001, opening 10 months later. This was followed by the complete changing of the interior of the church, reflecting the vision of the 1960s Vatican Council, with the original work of many well-known sculptors and artists to be seen in the church today. Today, both church and pastoral centre stand on Cambridge Park, a testament to our doughty, faith-filled forebears and the 100 worshippers in the Mission Chapel in 1910. With the increased Wanstead population being reflected in today’s Sunday masses, there is now an average attendance of 1,600.

Our ‘Old’ Lady Our Lady of Lourdes Wanstead was opened in October 1928. As the local Catholic community celebrates the church’s 90th anniversary, parishioner Maureen Brazier takes a look at the history of the Cambridge Park venue. Photo by Geoff Wilkinson

Safer, Cleaner & Greener Ahead of a public meeting to establish an environmental charter for Wanstead, Wanstead Village councillors Jo Blackman, Paul Donovan and Daniel Morgan-Thomas report on their diverse work schedule

I

Crime is an issue that concerns everyone. Government cuts to police budgets have contributed to the problem of crime across the country – Wanstead has been no exception. However, working closely with our Safer Neighbourhood Teams, we have been endeavouring to counter the threat. One major success has been the location of three new CCTV cameras in the area. This is part of the council’s commitment to address crime, as best it can, remembering that this responsibility rests foremost with the government, mayor and police. We were also quickly on the scene when travellers briefly invaded George Green at the end of August. The forthright actions of the police and Epping Forest keepers ensured the traveller group were moved on inside 24 hours. The injunction obtained by Redbridge Council earlier this year should also help ensure any travellers attempting to set up camp can be dealt with promptly. Another welcome development from our early months in office has been the news that the first piece in the 20s Plenty jigsaw for Wanstead is coming into place. When out on the campaign trail ahead of the elections in May, we found people concerned about road safety and keen on the proposal for 20mph speed limits in the area. Now, there is a consultation underway for a 20mph limit in the area bordered by Overton Drive, Warren

Finally, plans for an environmental charter for Wanstead are beginning to take shape. We aim to develop a number of initiatives that will help improve the local environment in Wanstead and hopefully set an example to other areas. There is to be a public meeting this month, when there will be more on the charter and a wider discussion about environmental matters. So, although it is early days, we do feel as the new ward councillors working together with fellow councillors in Wanstead Park that some really positive steps have already been taken, moving towards our shared vision for a safer, cleaner and greener Wanstead. To participate in the Wanstead swimming pool consultation, visit wavidi.co/pool A public meeting about the environmental charter for Wanstead will take place at Wanstead Library on 25 October from 7.30pm. BACK IN THE GAME As landlord of a newly opened Wanstead pub, Frank Lampard Sr has already stepped in to help his local community by sponsoring Snaresbrook FC. Millicent Brown speaks to the former West Ham star

F

ormer soccer star Frank Lampard Sr, who recently bought and revamped Nightingale on the Green, made a donation to Snaresbrook FC which allowed the team to buy a new kit plus some fitness equipment to help during training sessions on the picturesque Nutter Field. Frank, who played for both West Ham and England during his football career, found his passion for soccer meant becoming involved with his local amateur team was an offer he simply could not refuse. Nightingale on the Green opened in July and Frank has spent almost three months getting to know his regular customers and helping to get the pub up and running – and judging by the number of people now drinking and eating there, he is doing a fabulous job. Frank told me: “I have had a brilliant time getting Nightingale on the Green started and when I heard there was a local football team in need of my support, it was another opportunity I couldn’t miss. Now, it is simply great when the boys come down to the pub following their twice-weekly training sessions and, unbeknownst to them, I have even wandered down and watched them kicking a ball around on Nutter Field! They all seem really nice guys and I look forward to meeting them all properly over the coming months. The team haven’t had a home match yet so I haven’t been able to see them play down the road but that is something I am intending to do as soon as possible.” Snaresbrook FC, located at the ground in Nutter Lane since 1948, launched a brand new youth team back in 1998 and the fact so many are now playing for the adult team proves their solidarity and loyalty to the club.

Frank Lampard Sr with Snaresbrook FC players

This season, the team are playing in Senior Division One of the Essex Olympian Football League, winning their first official match 4–1. Amazingly, two players – Josh Woodcock and Drew Barbier – who have been with Snaresbrook since playing for the under10s participated, with Drew scoring a goal. They’ve since won their first league game 1–0. New team manager Rob Caine, who started with Snaresbrook under-8s and played into adulthood until injury, said: “The pub’s sponsorship has enabled us to purchase a brand new kit for the 2018/19 season. But more than that, Frank’s generosity has also funded some much-needed fitness equipment, which will help move the club in the right direction. Our thanks go to Frank, his manageress Debbie and their team for all their hospitality… We all enjoy going into the pub and love the atmosphere, so much so that one of our players now just can’t stay out of there!” Nightingale on the Green is located at 51 Nightingale Lane, Wanstead. Location, location, licence I

f you are a landlord renting out property in Redbridge you may need a licence. The licence you need will depend on the type, size and number of people living in the property.

The Shrubbery, Grosvenor Road, Wanstead is within the area requiring a licence

There are three different types of licences: a selective licence, a mandatory HMO (house in multiple occupation) licence and an additional HMO licence. There is an interactive map available on the Redbridge Council website outlining the areas within the borough that will require the selective licence and a large chunk of the Wanstead and South Woodford area is covered. Additional HMOs and mandatory HMOs are already in force. Selective licensing applies to all rented properties that are not HMOs. The full fee is £500, which will last until the scheme ends in 2023. The council are offering a 50% early bird discount if you make an application before 1 January 2019. Landlords have three options in obtaining a licence. They can download a form from the Redbridge Council website, they can request the council to complete the forms or they can request their letting agent completes them. Both the council and lettings agents will charge a fee for completing these forms, which are detailed and laborious and shouldn’t be left until the last minute as they do take time to complete. Certificates will need to be brought up to scratch to ensure tenants’ safety. Each of the three licences (selective, mandatory and additional) will require varying degrees of certificates and come with different stipulations.

As mentioned, additional and mandatory HMOs have already been in force for some time now; it’s just the selective licences that are now being introduced by the council. It is said by the council the selective licences are being introduced to ensure higher standards of safety across rentals in Redbridge. Ultimately, this is something that is unavoidable. After being introduced in Newham and Waltham Forest a number of years ago, Redbridge has seen the revenue benefits. Our advice is not to put it off; the form takes longer than you think to complete, and if you have multiple properties then I suggest you start the process now, but check the map first to ensure your property needs the licence and most of all, to benefit from the early bird discount. There is no sense in paying more when you don’t have to. From 1 October 2018, all privately rented properties on certain roads in Wanstead will need to be licensed. To check the map, visit wavidi.co/propertylicence Martin & Co is located at 13A High Street, Wanstead, E11 2AA. For more information, call 020 8518 8099

Independent local travel advisor Jack Leaf offers some insight into Nashville, which is the state capital of Tennessee and the country music capital of the world

M

any a household name has risen to fame in Tennessee, yet it’s quite unlike better known and more visited cities in the United States. It’s a very down-to-earth place where the famous coast alongside regular folk, so that they can be regular people themselves, away from the glare of the paparazzi. There has been a recent upsurge in visitor numbers to the city, many of whom are fans of the television series Nashville, a drama about a country singer. The city should also be remembered as one of the focal points of the Civil Rights movement too, and one can explore its history documented through museums, churches, hotels and monuments along the US Civil Rights Trail. Nashville has come a long way since those protest days of the 1950s and 1960s; today, it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. The new British Airways route operates once a day, five times a week from London Heathrow direct to Nashville and the flying time is nine hours. It was inaugurated in May 2018 and has proven extremely popular. So, I thought I’d share with you an itinerary I booked for a client recently, who will be travelling next June to celebrate a special birthday. On day one, the flight departs from Heathrow at 2.55pm, landing in Nashville at 6pm local time. The journey time from the airport to downtown is just 20 minutes; taxis operate a flat fare on this route, just $25. I recommend a stay of three nights at Kimpton’s Aertson Hotel, although there are iconic hotels such as the Bobby Hotel and Cambria Hotel, or more luxurious hotels like Thompson Nashville I quote on too. For day two, I include the Nashville Music Attraction Pass; it’s very good

value and provides admission to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Madame Tussauds, Johnny Cash Museum and a number of other venues. I suggest the best way to continue this first day of sightseeing is to enjoy the Nashville TV show tour, to see real-life filming locations and a visit to the renowned Bluebird Café. Day three starts with a backstage tour of the Grand Ole Opry Concert Hall, where country music was first performed to a wider audience back in 1925. Step on to the famous wooden circle where Patsy Cline and countless others have trod the boards. In the afternoon, I schedule a city tour with a knowledgeable local guide. To round off the day, attend that evening’s performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Each evening showcases a dynamic line-up of new stars alongside established stars. Day four is your last day and I leave that ‘at leisure’ to continue exploring independently or to relax before the flight back to London, which departs at 8.20pm. However, as it is a special birthday, for these clients I also included a private Nashville Recording Studio tour. Jack is based in Snaresbrook – visit destiny-travel.co.uk or call 020 8989 6764. In the seventh of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multigarden nature reserve – Susie Knox recommends bare-root plants as a cheap way to add shrubs and trees to your garden

I

f you had to pick one thing to do that would bring the broadest environmental benefit to Wanstead, it would have to be increasing the amount of greenery in builtup parts of the neighbourhood. The loss of vegetation in residential areas has been dramatic in Britain. The Royal Horticultural Society say one in three front gardens now have no plants at all. Yet, research from all over the world consistently highlights the enormous benefits of urban vegetation. Greenery in towns and cities supports struggling wildlife, acts as a barrier against car pollution, lowers temperatures during heatwaves, improves the look of streets, increases the value of houses, mops up carbon, improves mental health and wellbeing and even enhances children’s brain function and learning. If you’ve got a patch of soil and want to add some vegetation to your garden, you’ll get most impact if you plant a shrub or small tree – something with a bit of oomph about it. And now is the perfect moment to do it. Autumn and winter months are the best time to establish deciduous trees and shrubs, and one of the simplest, cheapest ways of doing it is to buy bare-root plants. Bare-root plants are sold as saplings when they’re dormant and without any foliage, so they generally look like a stick with roots. As a result, they’re easy to buy through mail order and usually come in more environmentallyfriendly packaging than potted plants. They are great value, so you can create a hedge or add bigger plants much more cheaply than buying them in plastic containers. Bare-root plants also tend to establish really well – although the air might be getting colder in autumn, the soil is relatively warm, so once in the ground, the roots quietly grow, helping the plant settle in and make the most of the damp winter months, ready to spring to life the following year. Bare-root shrubs and trees are available from around mid-November to the end of February. Full instructions on how to plant your new purchase will be provided by the seller, but the general principles are to:

zz Keep the roots moist once the plant has arrived (they’ll be packaged in a way that’s easy to do this). zz Give them a proper soak in water immediately prior to planting. zz Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root spread (and put in a stake if you’re planting a tree). zz Make a little pile of earth in the middle to support the root ball. zz Place the plant so that the crown (where the trunk meets the roots) will sit at or slightly above soil level with the roots spreading downward. zz Backfill with soil. zz Keep the plant watered while it gets established. There are loads of attractive plants that are easy to grow as bushy shrubs or trees and that offer food and a place to live for urban birds and insects. Some options include: zz Elder: large, scented cow parsley-type flowers, purple-black berries in late summer and autumn. zz Dog rose: pink flowers plus red hips in autumn. zz Hawthorn: dense, spiny shelter for birds. zz Holly: year-round greenery. zz Juneberry: early spring flowers. zz Laurel: great for shady spots. zz Viburnum: different varieties to choose from that flower in winter or spring. a question of love

Wanstead resident and actress Charlotte Knowles – best known for her role as a waitress on Channel 4’s First Dates – continues her series of speed dating events this month with a quiz-themed evening

I

nternet dating can move over… it’s time to bring back the classic ‘let’s have a real face-to-face conversation and a drink!’ After two hugely successful speed dating events in Wanstead – 12 beautiful matches were made in August – I’m back. Charlotte, the Queen of Hearts, bringing people together to find their one true love or even a new best friend. My last speed dating event came with a twist. I wanted to instil confidence back into people who had lost hope on the dating path. Making people feel beautiful is an important part of that journey. So, I teamed up with Woodford Green-based dental practice Improve Your Smile and the exciting Enigma Beauty Clinic to help me give one lucky lady a head-to-toe makeover. The lucky winner was pulled from a hat. I have been terribly dismayed after listening to so many lovely ladies and their stories on how they have had awful experiences with relationships and how today’s dating had changed so much that it felt totally alien. They had lost confidence, not only in themselves but, more tragically, in love itself. I know it sounds cheesy but love really does make the world go round. A loving partner can change your life. These ladies were strong, independent business women but felt scared when it came to dating. I wanted to say ‘But how? You’re beautiful and intelligent.’ So, I decided if I could help even just one lady in any way, however small, then I would. Oh, and what wonderful transformations! However, it must be said, I could not have done it without the support and amazing work from the staff at Improve Your Smile

and the beauty therapists at Enigma. Their dedication, work and belief has been very humbling. They have worked their magic consistently time and again. My next event is this month. The question is, do you have brains as well as beauty? Are you feeling quizzical? Do you have all the answers when all around you is lost for words? If this is you, and you’re looking for your missing puzzle piece, then you need to join my fun quiz and speed dating evening. We will begin with a glass of bubbly. When everyone is ready, participants will receive a name badge and scoring card. Each five-question round will last 20 minutes, after which the gentlemen will move on to their next table of ladies. I am a true romantic at heart and believe everyone should have their special someone. Falling in love consists merely of uncorking the imagination and bottling the common sense. No one ever fell in love without being a little bit brave. Charlotte’s speed dating event will take place at The Manor House, 129 High Street, Wanstead on 18 October from 7.30pm to 10pm (tickets: £20). Visit wavidi.co/qzdate

Not all dental checkups are the same.

Visit Woodford House and discover the difference. Our comprehensive oral health examination is designed to help you understand what is happening in your mouth, and to diagnose potential dental problems such as gum disease, acid erosion and excessive wear of the teeth. A New Patient Examination at Woodford House includes: l A thorough examination of your teeth and any fillings, taking digital X-rays. Are your teeth healthy? Are there signs of damage or decay, or any bone loss? l Your gums are evaluated to detect any disease – do they bleed? l Digital photographs of your teeth – you too can see what the dentist sees. l Oral cancer screen – a review of the soft tissues, looking for any bumps or lumps. l Your bite – how your upper and lower teeth meet. Are there signs of excessive wear and breaking teeth? Do you suffer from migraines, or pain in your jaw joints?

l Blood pressure – As part of our Wellness Dentistry approach we screen for signs of ill health. Many people are unaware their blood pressure is too high or too low. If treatment is needed, the team at Woodford House will work with you with a personalised plan to achieve your goals, whether you want better dental health, a more comfortable mouth or a more attractive smile – perhaps all three! BIRDS ARE PREY Bob Elliot is head of the RSPB Investigations team and will be giving a talk for the local RSPB group this month about the organisation’s ongoing fight against bird crime

T

he RSPB Investigations team is all about detecting and preventing crimes against wild birds, particularly birds of prey. You might not think it, but our beautiful countryside can be a dangerous place for birds of prey. Every week, my team receives reports of birds like red kites, peregrine falcons and buzzards being deliberately shot, trapped or poisoned. This is not only brutal but illegal, punishable by imprisonment and an unlimited fine. The persecution of raptors must stop – and you can help. This summer, I was fortunate enough to spend a week in Switzerland, taking in the incredible alpine scenery around the Matterhorn. As well as an abundance of flora and fauna, I saw goshawks and other raptors in numbers you just don’t see here in the UK. Places like the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District National Park should be abundant in beautiful birds of prey, but sadly, this is increasingly not the case. Illegal persecution has a lot to do with this. A good deal of our work takes place in the uplands of northern Britain, particularly on land managed for driven grouse shooting. To maintain artificially high numbers of red grouse, some gamekeepers are sadly resorting to illegal predator control. This puts some of our most vulnerable birds in the firing line, like the rare hen harrier. These are gorgeous birds with owl-like faces. But unless you’re very fortunate, or really know where to look, most people won’t ever have encountered one of these aerial marvels. Just three successful nests were recorded in England last year, despite habitat for over 300 pairs. To build a clearer picture of why these birds aren’t doing well, my colleagues regularly fit satellite tags to young hen harriers. By

A trapped peregrine

sending us regular transmissions, we can see where the birds go after they fledge. Sadly, a number of satellite-tagged hen harriers have suspiciously vanished over grouse moors. Birds of prey are at risk of illegal persecution across the whole of the UK, even in towns and cities. Peregrines – the fastest creatures on earth – are clever; rather than risk nesting on moorland, many have become urban adaptors. There’s probably a pair nesting on the spire of your nearest cathedral. In April this year, a peregrine was found dead in Rugby town centre. It had probably hit a window and died, but on being x-rayed, vets discovered a pellet in the body – showing it had been illegally shot in the past but survived. This is why we always ask the public to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious to the police on 101 and to us. You can play a vital part in helping detect and stop bird crime. Bob’s talk for the North East London Local Group of the RSPB will take place at St Mary’s Church, South Woodford on 9 October from 8pm (non-members: £4.50). For more information, call 020 8989 4746. Fabulous libraries With a line-up including a discussion of women’s rights with Shami Chakrabarti in Wanstead, this month’s Fabula Festival is set to show that there is far more to libraries than books. Anita Luby reports

I

f you haven’t been into one of Redbridge’s libraries for a while then you’re in for a pleasant surprise! Gone are the days when libraries were just places full of dusty books and bespectacled librarians telling you to be quiet. These days, you are just as likely to come across live theatre and music as you are a shelf of books. Libraries in Redbridge are thriving cultural hotspots that support grassroots local creative talent as well as bringing high-quality arts programming to the borough. For many residents, their first cultural experience takes place in one of our libraries. Over the last three years, the library service has been developing Fabula Festival to make libraries even more engaging for the community. Fabula Festival is a unique, week-long celebration of the art of storytelling and its power to transform lives. It is delivered through a programme of performances, children’s events, author talks, films, writing programmes, workshops and specially commissioned arts projects. It is designed to encourage Redbridge residents of all ages to develop their enjoyment of reading, writing and storymaking through participation in high-quality arts activities and events.

vindication of the rights of women worldwide in the 21st century. Rachel Holmes ventures further back in history to tell the story of Eleanor Marx, a woman who did more than any other to transform British politics in the 19th century. Elsewhere in the festival, London Laureate Laurie Bolger will be leading a masterclass for aspiring writers followed by a performance event featuring herself and rising star on the poetry circuit, Kieron Rennie. Redbridge Libraries issue the most children’s books across London and this is partly down to the programme of events for families we offer throughout the year. The ‘kids take over’ events curated by the magical Discover Story Centre – which will take place at Redbridge Central Library and Fulwell Cross Library over the weekend of 13 and 14 October – won’t disappoint.

This year, the festival is even bigger and better as we celebrate the power of libraries during National Libraries Week from 9 to 14 October to showcase the very best in literature, music, drama, dance, film, art and technology.

There’s so much going on throughout the festival that all tastes and abilities will be catered for, so pick up or download a festival brochure today.

Highlights include a lively event with Shami Chakrabarti and Rachel Holmes at Wanstead Library, which will explore women’s rights and history. Leading human rights campaigner, Chakrabarti’s new work, Of Women, makes the case for radical positive action to promote the

D

uring the 1950s and 1960s there was a constant turnover of society membership. Some members moved away, others were not able to continue for domestic reasons. The loss of talented members in this way made it difficult for the club to fulfil the hopes of the early members that the society would ‘take its place amongst the foremost in the country’. Finances also caused concern at this time, and the society held its first raffle in September 1953, tickets costing 6d and the prize worth approximately 4/6. The society had 37 members in 1956, and the records of the monochrome print competitions show there were three advanced workers, seven intermediate and five preliminary. The society began to place greater emphasis on competitions, and with this came the need to establish rules. In 1953, a print panel was established to select prints for competitions and to determine the classes. In 1955, the committee agreed to set up rules for print competitions. In 1955, the first four-way annual print battle was held involving photographic societies from Ilford, Loughton, Bishops Stortford and Woodford. Several years later, in 1964, the directors of Ilford Ltd in Basildon presented a shield for this contest, which then became known as the Basildon Trophy Battle. Since then, Bishops Stortford has withdrawn and in 1979, the Ilford Photographic Society was dissolved. The two clubs were replaced in the competition by Lea Valley Camera Club and Enfield Camera Club. Woodford Photographic Society ceased taking part in the early 2000s, but in 2018 this competition is still going strong, taking place annually, having become a monochrome print competition between Walthamstow, Chingford, Loughton and Enfield clubs. After the war, 35mm colour slides became increasingly popular and the programmes were arranged to give an equal balance of colour slides and monochrome prints in competitions, the first colour slide competition being held in 1953. Cameras

and equipment were not too expensive, and with slides being commercially processed, the opportunity for photography was open to all. Slide shows became a popular form of entertainment for the general public, both at home and at other society meetings. In 1957, to foster this interest, the society decided to allow both home-processed and tradeprocessed slides to be entered into competitions. In 1962, the Wanstead and Woodford Borough Council staged a ‘What We Do’ exhibition at the Sir James Hawkey Hall as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations. All local organisations were invited to contribute. The Woodford Photographic Society had four panels on display at the exhibition In 1968, Henry Malby, grandson of the founder of the society, was elected honorary vicepresident and life member of the society. After a long period of caretaker strikes in 1967 and 1968, which came without warning so that lecturers, judges and members could not be notified, the society found other premises at Ray Lodge church hall, which also had a storeroom available. The club needed a new projector at this time and members were asked for donations, contributing £10 towards the total cost of £27 14s 9d. By the end of the 1960s, the content of the programmes had changed. The programme for 1968 shows the club had become more competitive. Of the 42 meetings, 16 were competitions. Some members contributed an evening, including Fred James and Reg Fowkes, but there were also talks and demonstrations by professional companies, including May & Baker, Agfa, Kodak, Minolta, the Camera Centre and the Photographic Alliance.

Support bereaved parents Stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands is seeking local volunteers to help establish a new support group in Wanstead and Woodford. Area coordinator Rose Abrehart explains what is needed

“I

found out that I had lost my baby just before Christmas. There are no words to describe the utter despair I felt.” Those are the words of a parent who was helped by Sands. Sands is the leading stillbirth and neonatal death charity in the UK. We work nationally to reduce baby deaths through promoting better maternity care and funding research. We have a programme of training and a wide range of resources designed to support professionals to improve the bereavement care they provide following the death of a baby, and we provide a comprehensive bereavement support service both nationally through our helpline and locally through around 100 regional support groups based across the UK. Losing your much longed-for baby late in pregnancy or soon after birth is the most awful trauma any parent can experience. A whole future is taken away from that family. Sadly, this happens only too often. Currently, 15 babies a day die in the weeks before or just after birth. Sands aims to care for those families with practical and emotional support for as long as they need it. We are currently working with Haven House Children’s Hospice and are looking to find volunteers to help us set up a new Sands group in the Wanstead and Woodford area. We need people prepared to become part of a committee, including a chair, treasurer and secretary as well as befrienders. The chair helps the committee work together as a team, following the aims of Sands and ensuring the group works within the Sands constitution. The treasurer’s role would be especially suitable to anyone with financial acumen as well as an interest or empathy with

our work. Not all committee members have to be bereaved parents. As long as you have an empathy and interest in our work, we would urge you to get involved. Befrienders – who are usually bereaved parents, grandparents or family members – are also needed to provide support to anyone affected by the death of a baby over the phone and in person at group meetings. New befrienders must complete our befriender training, and a minimum of two years must have passed since their baby died. I hope there are people in and around Wanstead who will consider helping to set up a group in the area so we can look to provide support to bereaved parents and their families at a devastating time for them. Currently, there is little support in the Wanstead and Woodford area for these parents and it is very much needed. I would urge anyone who could help to get in touch. For information on how to volunteer for Sands, call 07707 480 020, email rose.abrehart@sands.org.uk or visit sands.org.uk
