Newspaper obituaries are a somewhat strange section of the media. Strange not because of their content, but because of their concept. A concept that took the publication of what were once brief announcements of deaths – dating back to early Rome and the daily papyrus newsletter Acta Diurna – and developed them into the mini-biographies we read today. And it is the post-mortem publication of a deceased’s lifetime achievements that creates the uniqueness of the modern obituary. There are few, if any, other areas of the media in which so many ready-to-publish features are prepared in advance, without knowing when they will be used. The level of preparedness for any given obituary will correlate to the status of the subject within their industry or field of expertise. In the case of many high-profile figures – where an obituary’s subject can outlive its author – obituaries can serve as a formalised way of collating and documenting facts and figures that may already be widely known. But obituaries really come into their own in the cases of those less well known. “Your obits have helped me to learn of those who I should have followed while they were alive,” said one online comment under a Daily Telegraph article. It is this aspect of obituaries that lifts them from that strange evolution of the death notice to something much more important: a celebration of one life and the education of many others. You will be pleased to know that the Wanstead Village Directory does not have obituaries prepared for any local residents, no matter how high profile they may be. Like many of our articles, any obituaries we publish are by the people, for the people. And while we may not have a team of dedicated obituary writers, we certainly do have a community full of lives worth celebrating. Lee Marquis, Editor

Blowing in the Wind: artist’s walk-through maze of ribbons is in demand A walk-through maze of ribbons welcomed visitors to the Wanstead Festival last month. Created by Michael Nash – who has a communication disorder and recently graduated from UEL with a first class degree in Fine Art – the installation was part of the eighth Art Trail Wanstead. Michael devised the movable maze, called Blowing in the Wind, to go with the trail’s theme: A Breath of Fresh Air, before he and his mother, Sue, recycled more than a thousand ribbons from fabric and donations. Michael completed the presentation of his maze by dressing up in a
costume embellished with a 3D pen. “Listen to artists, and you’ll find that behind every piece of work, there’s a story. And often, very many hours of hard work,” said a spokesman for Art Group Wanstead. Michael has since received requests to show the maze at other events.

The regional president of a global volunteer movement will talk about how women are making a difference in the world at a Wanstead Park Women’s Club event this month. “With Soroptimist International, you can learn new skills or use existing ones to help your community or a project abroad,” said Alison Charles, whose talk will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 23 October from 8pm (visitors: £2; booking required). Redbridge Council is encouraging residents who live in flats to recycle more by offering prize funds of up to £800. The Flats Recycling League – into which all housing blocks across the borough are automatically entered – rewards two blocks of flats every three months, with residents of the winning blocks collectively deciding how to spend the money. Hermitage Court in Snaresbrook was among the latest winners. Visit wavidi.co/frl

Not just any new food shop: M&S to welcome customers with glass of fizz
Residents and visitors enjoy biggest ever Wanstead Festival
Marks & Spencer will open a new food store at 157 High Street, Wanstead at 10am on 10 October. Store manager Deborah Cunningham will be joined by her 42-strong team to welcome customers with a glass of fizz, accompanied by sweet treats and samples from the M&S food range. “We’ll have some fantastic new products from the autumn range, ideal for when those chillier nights start to draw in,” said Deborah. The new store will be open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 7pm on Sundays.
With an estimated 5,000 visitors, three music stages and 65 community stalls, last month’s 15th annual Wanstead Festival on Christchurch Green was the biggest to date. The Woodford and Wanstead Rock Choir and Songbird Sessions were among the local singers who performed, while roaming performances by shopping trolley dance display team Granny Turismo also kept crowds entertained throughout the day. The annual festival, run by Vision RCL, followed a week of communityorganised Wanstead Fringe events.

Changes to Lake House Estate parking regulations to be accelerated
Lo & Behold: local musicians to celebrate Bob Dylan and The Beatles
Cars parked on the residential section of Lake House Road
Plans are in place to accelerate the implementation of new parking regulations on the Lake House Estate. A consultation will seek residents’ views on the possibility of either a one-hour yellow line waiting restriction or a permit parking scheme, which would usually take up to 12 months to implement but, if approved, may be in place by early next year. Action over parking problems on the estate was called for at a public meeting last month, which was attended by approximately 100 residents.
Wanstead-based rock, pop and blues covers group Lo & Behold will be performing at The Larder this month. “My best friend and I formed the group three years ago, although we have played many other gigs together since the age of 16 in various bands,” said David Bird, who also runs music booking platform Red River Musicians. The performance on 26 October (7pm to 10pm; tickets: £6) will celebrate the likes of Bob Dylan, Ed Sheeran and The Beatles. Visit wavidi.co/larderevents

Lee McGinty with a small number of the models created at the Wanstead Festival
An exhibition exploring the life, culture and traditions of the Luo people – an African tribe in Western Kenya – will be on display at Wanstead Library from 2 to 14 October as part of Black History Month celebrations. “We have interviewed members of the Luo community who are now living in Redbridge. In their own words, this exhibition paints a picture of Luo life and how it has changed in the modern world,” said a spokesperson for Eastside Community Heritage, which documents the stories people living in east London.
More than 100 families took part in a Lego hunt last month, determined to spot the 15 models hidden in High Street businesses as part of Art Trail Wanstead (a diner apparently couldn’t resist the 16th Lego sushi model on the carousel in Sumo Fresh, which disappeared). The models were created by Wanstead resident Lee McGinty and five other members of the London Adult Fans of Lego group. A Lego workshop at the Wanstead Festival also attracted 600 participants, who made 200 models using 30,000 bricks.

Beyond the garden This month, Barbara Sampson will be displaying her garden-inspired paintings at Wanstead House as part of Essex Art Club’s annual exhibition
F
or as long as I can remember I have sketched and painted. My work springs from my natural surroundings, walking through my garden and beyond into forest and imagination. The combination of the beautiful replication, colour, shape and form of nature has provided a constant thread of inspiration. During the last two summers, weather permitting, I have been pleased to join a group of members from Essex Art Club on their plein air painting excursions to the countryside, finding inspiration for new work in different gardens. I have always lived and worked locally, apart from a short spell in the country in the 1970s. I lived with my family in Wanstead for many years and now we live close to Epping Forest in Chingford. I lived in Leytonstone as a child and went to a technical school in Walthamstow. I went on to study at Walthamstow School of Art in the late 1960s, where I found a sense of purpose and learnt a working practice that still resides in me. My varied career path began through the world of illustration for children. When I entered a toy competition while in my final year at art school, my design entries were noticed by Galt Toys. This chance connection was the key that opened up an adventure into games and puzzles. Two of my designs, The Royal Game of Goose and a Ludo board, are held in the V&A archive collection. Commissions for textiles and wallpaper design, children’s book illustration and greetings cards followed, inspired by floral and decorative themes. I have exhibited in London galleries, including The Mall Galleries, Bankside Gallery, The
Garden Museum and for The Society of Botanical Artists at Central Hall, Westminster. I regularly exhibit paintings locally and have worked as artist in residence in schools in Redbridge and Waltham Forest. October will be a busy month for me this year as I also have a solo exhibition at The View Gallery in Chingford. The Garden and Beyond will weave together images of past and present work and runs throughout the month. The Essex Art Club Wanstead House exhibition will take place on 28 and 29 October from 10am to 5pm (free entry). For more information, visit wavidi.co/eac Barbara’s exhibition at The View Gallery in Chingford runs from 1 to 29 October. For more information, visit wavidi.co/theview

Tom & The old Joanna Since Tom Carradine launched his cockney singalong in 2014 he has rapidly become a fixture on the UK’s thriving vintage scene. This month, he performs in Wanstead for the Mayor of Redbridge’s charity appeal
S
Although I was born and raised in Coventry, I have been studying the art of the cockney singalong for the last 12 years. I started playing these songs on the piano as a child, having first been introduced to them while performing in the Scout Gang Shows at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. Throughout my school days, and whilst studying for a degree in biochemistry at Imperial College London, I continued my musical interests. After graduating, I decided to pursue a musical career. Since then, I have been lucky enough to work across the UK as a keyboard player and musical director on professional theatre productions. I have also performed in a variety of West End shows and UK tours, including Les Miserables and The Sound of Music. I am currently musical director at Brick Lane Music Hall in Silvertown, one of the few remaining companies in the country producing old-time music hall and variety shows. The concept of my cockney singalong was born out of the late night, impromptu singalongs I started leading at the Twinwood Vintage Music and Dance Festival in Bedford in 2013. Hosting the entertainment from the ‘old Joanna’, I present an evening of timeless songs with audience participation. I aim to transport the audience back in time for a traditional cockney singalong, with songs from the music hall era, World War One and Two, the West End stage and popular songs from across the decades. There’s even a few slightly more

ince launching at Wilton’s Music Hall in 2014, my cockney singalong has gone from strength to strength. A music hall and old-time music aficionado, I wanted to capture the flavour and atmosphere of a good old-fashioned knees-up and recreate it for audiences, young and old.
modern songs in my programme, which hint at my predictions for the singalong classics of the future. My piano playing style is heavily influenced by Mrs Mills and her popular party albums of the Seventies. My performances have the same fun, lively atmosphere she famously created, and my act brings back so many memories for people – of family parties or grandparents singing these songs with them as children – a warm feeling of collective nostalgia. When everyone in the room is singing, it’s easy to get lost in the sound and forget any inhibitions, even for someone who is self-conscious or says they can’t sing. I believe the only way we can keep this historic part of our musical heritage alive is to sing it and share it and I am excited to bring my show to Wanstead for the Mayor of Redbridge’s charity appeal. talking language As Black History Month gets underway with a number of events taking place in local libraries, Jane Grell looks at the evolution of Caribbean languages and defends the use of Creole
I
was born and grew up on the Caribbean island of Dominica, a British colony until its independence in 1978. The official language is English, the unofficial Kweyol, formerly known as French Creole or Patwa. England and France were notorious for their rivalry over ownership of the islands. England won in the case of Dominica, and so Creole was relegated to second-class status. People were judged educated only if they spoke ‘good English’. Creole languages evolved as a result of the slave trade and Africa’s encounter with Europe. Forbidden to speak their languages from the Niger Delta region, the enslaved people simply superimposed European vocabulary over the syntax of their mother tongues. English colonies that never changed hands, such as Jamaica and Barbados, speak Patwa as well as standard English. In Kweyol-speaking Dominica and St Lucia, we say: “La plié ka tombe” (rain is falling). The Anglophones say “Rain ah fal”. Thus, the African speech patterns are similar, irrespective of the language. I frequently defend Creole’s legitimacy, usually in response to someone of African-Caribbean heritage referring to it as broken English or French. Far from being broken, our languages, evolving as they did in the hostile society of enslavement, were an effective survival tool. Language remains inextricably bound with power, accent and social class. The way we speak defines us, though things are not always so clear cut. A young black teacher told me that she waited outside a headteacher’s office for an interview. On the telephone, all had gone well, but he had difficulty matching the cut-glass accent of the voice to the person before him. Twice he looked past her and was mortified by his mistake.
Language politics has its funny side, though. When I taught French at a boys’ comprehensive in Hackney in the 1970s, 11-year-old Xavier was every inexperienced teacher’s nemesis. One day, he called me “Sacre’ Africhen!” meaning ‘damned African!’ I assumed his family came from either Dominica or St Lucia, so in response to his intended insult and bad behaviour, I deployed the full force of my Kweyol vocabulary. To my astonishment and gratification, he grinned, became putty in my hands, offered to clean the blackboard and even threatened to “do in” anyone who dared interrupt Miss Grell. With its abundance of riddles, proverbs and caustic humour, Creole is also second to none for dishing out advice, such as this grandma’s words to a fussy girl seeking a husband: ”Chile, mind you don’t be too choosey, choosey, you know… or you’ll end up with jackass!” Jane will be hosting an open mic night for Black History Month at Wanstead Library on 19 October and at Redbridge Central Library on 26 October. A Black History Month play-reading group will also take place at South Woodford Library on 17 October. Visit wavidi.co/bhm17

Goodbye, friend Stuart Monro, who died last month, was a videographer and founder of the campaign for Wanstead Park. Friends of Wanstead Parklands members explain why the important work Stuart did will live on
I
n the summer of 2005, Stuart Monro contacted several people who were interested in Wanstead Park’s history and invited them to his home to discuss ways to promote the park and lobby for its preservation and improvement. The group was formalised as the Wanstead Parklands Community Project, which initially had about a dozen members. Within a short time, successful bids for grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Nationwide building society enabled Stuart to devote his time and expertise to producing a series of DVDs describing various aspects of the history and natural history of the park. These were well received by the local community and are still in demand as a means of bringing Wanstead Park to a wider audience. Stuart also arranged promotional events in local venues. His films of these events demonstrated the strength of local support for the campaign for Wanstead Park. In June 2009, Wanstead Park, largely due to lobbying from the Community Project, was included in English Heritage’s Heritage at Risk Register. This prompted the group to sponsor the reactivation of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, a membership-based organisation which had been dormant for some years. The object was to provide the park’s custodians with a more broadly based partner than the Community Project which, though active and effective, was a small, self-selected committee. It was felt that an active Friends group would be better placed to assist with the challenging task of removing the park from the register. At the inaugural meeting, Stuart screened a specially produced DVD about the park. Today, the Friends of Wanstead Parklands is an organisation with hundreds of members.
Stuart Monro, born 15 June 1938, died 7 September 2017
A still from one of Stuart’s films of Wanstead Park
It has built on the work begun by Stuart and the expertise of its members has materially contributed to the development of plans to secure Wanstead Park’s long-term future. Prior to the launch of the campaign for Wanstead Park, Stuart had been a resident of Wanstead for more than two decades. After studying drama at Bristol University and film at the London School of Film, Stuart made his living producing videos. In 2016 a retrospective was held at Morley College at which a selection of the films he had made were shown. Stuart’s gift for telling stories may have had something to do with being the stepson of popular children’s TV presenter Johnny Morris. Stuart certainly brought the same infectious enthusiasm to his work. Stuart collapsed suddenly at home on 7 September. He died with his wife, Charlotte, by his side, and to her we will give the last word: “Stuart, we love you so much and so many other people do. My support, my life sharer, Anna’s dad and soulmate. He has given so much… His films, his wisdom, and his great love and loyalty to people, and his humour. And what he has given will live on in all of us.” To view some of Stuart’s videos on Wanstead Park, visit wavidi.co/monro

Hall to Hall Spratt Hall Road resident Georgina Atkinson will be heading off to Hughes Hall, Cambridge this month to begin her history degree. Here, Georgina offers a millennial’s view of growing up in Wanstead
A
flurry of green, like a flock of starlings being suddenly released, is the only way I can describe the end of school at St Joseph’s. Starting off my millennial life at St Joseph’s Convent School For Girls saw me make the arduous journey from Spratt Hall Road: 200 yards to the school gate. Accompanied by copious bags, it probably seemed I was more prepared for a camping trip with Bear Grylls than a day at prep school. Perhaps one of the defining features of going to St Joseph’s was, and still is, the hats. Any past pupil and parent will understand the hat situation. A compulsory feature of school life in both summer and winter, with their stretched elastic, which always felt like it was digging in,
and which had the unfortunate property of being overstretched at the slightest pull. The summer ones were noticeably itchy rather than actually protecting the head from the sun. Despite their disadvantages, I did secretly like wearing them; as my mother says: “If you want to get ahead, get a hat!” Weekends were filled with breakfasts of croissants from the eponymous Nice Croissant and trips to the beloved Woolworths, which has ceased to exist in the intervening years. As I grew up, my journeys to secondary school involved taking the bus from the High Street. Quite commonly, you would find me running in order to catch the illustrious W13, which would wing its way towards Woodford. The journey home would see the same journey in reverse, although I became as
son a Atkin

October 2017 flat as a pancake, squashed between my peers, relieved when the bus made its final stop as I could topple back onto the High Street, with the familiar setting welcoming me home. Listening to Harry Potter audiobooks became replaced by trying to revise for exams, both GCSEs and A-levels. Naturally, the local library became my study companion, as well as the local haunts of Starbucks and Costa, which saw me through the longest of hours trying to revise for these seminal exams. Thankfully, revising for exams is over and I’m now onto the daunting task of university. Owning a dog in Wanstead doesn’t come without its challenges, but luckily for our dog, and for me, Christchurch Green can be an oasis of calm. The park seems to have its own ecosystem whereby you can immediately tell which season is about to spring into action. As well as this lustrous pasture for him to roam, there is also Wanstead Park, where hours can be spent idly wandering, taking in the delights that the park has to offer. Not to mention the pet shop in the High Street, which has been a steadfast venue, despite the recent years of wider economic distress. Sadly, I can no longer buy my obligatory stationery from Woolworths but I can now delight in other developments in the area, such as Gail’s and the glorious Ginger Pig. These developments have all been part of growing up in the millennial age. Another transition is the population of Wanstead. There used to be more of the older generations here, but now it has become a place for generations of young families, emphasising that people of all ages actively want to live in this village. Traditions in Wanstead make it what it is, a real community, from the farmers’ market every
month to the annual Art Trail Wanstead, as well as seeing the same faces along the High Street every weekend. All of these features combine to make Wanstead the community that so many people – of all generations – love to call home. Working in the city has seen me make the commute from Wanstead, the glow of the station acting as a beacon, shepherding the city workers to their subterranean adventure. To turn right or left along the platform is an important decision, nodding awkwardly to those familiar faces you see every morning. Acknowledge that you are once again about to metamorphose into a sardine, bound along with the other workers for a rather squashed journey. One significant millennial feature that I have noticed over the past 21 years is the use of smartphones. Today, it is not uncommon for everyone on the Tube to be plugged into their device, whereas in my early life this wasn’t the case, a sign that it is not just Wanstead developing but the whole of society as well. That is the thing about Wanstead. It feels completely familiar, the people, the places, and yet there is a real sense of development and growth. Perhaps Wanstead mimics the cycle of life. While things may change, and as I grow older I will appreciate that, in essence and at its core, Wanstead will remain the same.
The Wanstead Village Directory wishes Georgina and all students moving away to university this month the very best of luck.

Thank you for the sMiles Dr Amjad Malik, lead clinician at Improve Your Smile, answers our questions about his work as a dentist, revealing an interest in bees and a hesitant admission to being an ABBA fan
D
r Amjad Malik has been a dentist for 35 years, with 31 of them spent in Woodford. He is proud that he still treats some of his original patients – as well as their children and grandchildren. What changes in dentistry have you seen during the last 35 years? The greatest difference has been in attitudes and expectations – people are now more conscious about their health and looks. And advances in materials and technology mean dentists can now do much more for patients. How do you react to patients who have neglected their teeth? I help every patient as much as I can. I like to find out the whole picture because sometimes teeth have been affected by general ill-health or stress. If patients feel embarrassed, I try to make them more comfortable. What is the most satisfying element of your work? Taking someone whose mouth has been compromised in some way, bringing their teeth and gums back to full health and seeing them permanently out of pain, and confident. That may sound corny, but it’s true! Who do you most admire? Dr John Kois, who runs the prestigious Kois Centre in Seattle. They offer advanced training for dentists from all over the world in finding the best ways to help patients keep their teeth for longer. The Kois philosophy is to base every decision on the latest scientific knowledge. I am proud to have become a Kois Mentor, helping to keep other dentists up to date. Do you recommend dentistry as a career? Yes! It’s a very rewarding career in helping people, and it’s always fascinating. In over 30
years, I have helped motivate and train several dentists, some of whom have since gone on to specialist clinical roles. If you had not trained as a dentist, is there another career you might have enjoyed? The antiques world appeals, but I know I’d never sell much because I’d have trouble parting with things! Otherwise, I’d like to be an architect. I am interested in old buildings. What are your leisure interests? Travel, theatre, and beekeeping, which I am learning from a patient. I’m interested in the important role bees have in our lives. What is your favourite music? [Short pause] I’m trying to decide whether to admit I like ABBA or not! I like a wide variety, from Fleetwood Mac to Adele. Also classical music – Classic FM on Sunday mornings. What is your favourite film? The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. It teaches integrity and honour. Both are important in my own life. Woodford House Dental Practice is located at 162 High Road, Woodford Green. For more information, call 020 8504 2704

Street signs The streets of Wanstead and across Redbridge need more attention, says Steve Wilks and Scott Wilding as they take a look at the findings of the Redbridge Streets Commission in the first of two articles
T
Focus groups were asked about their views on the streets in Redbridge. While it is welcome that the council listens and engages with its residents, there were a number of shortcomings with the way this commission carried out its findings, and a close examination of the metrics paints a different perspective of the issues at hand. Why was there not a public invitation for people to apply and be part of the commission? Focus groups were set up, but why weren’t local community groups automatically invited to attend? Wanstead has numerous groups, such as the Wanstead Society and various residents’ associations, who would be well informed to make a contribution to issues concerning streets. In terms of the data gathering, meetings were arranged and bookable online. However, the meetings were often held at inconvenient times, such as 4.30pm on a weekday when a lot of people are at work. The council needs to understand that such meetings need to happen in the evening or at the weekend if they want to see democracy in action. It is important to note the report’s timing, which was initiated before the implementation of the paid-for garden waste scheme in April. Perhaps if the inquiry was run again there would be different feedback now. Looking at the report’s statistics on street cleaning and litter removal, it shows that
© 2017 Google
he Redbridge Streets Commission was set up in February this year, consisting of a panel of five non-party political commissioners. They were tasked to produce an independent report, which was published over the summer.
The streets of Wanstead around Christchurch Green
almost 50% of respondents think the council does a poor job of cleaning our streets. This is clearly unacceptable. Even taking a look at anecdotal evidence, when you look around Wanstead, you see litter bins overflowing. Looking at the cleanliness of the neighbourhood metric, some 44.2% stated it is poor, while 55.8% rated it satisfactory or good, but the categories were not specific enough to identify what really is satisfactory. One interesting statistic is the community spirit and cohesion metric, which shows 42% think it is poor. Again, this is too high and is perhaps the result of changes in local democracy and decision-making with the abolition of the area committees. Residents are disillusioned and disaffected and this is manifesting in these findings. The council should always remember it is residents who elect and entrust them with their powers. All decision-making should have a nod to the wishes of their electorate. To read the Redbridge Streets Commission report, visit wavidi.co/streets. The council’s next local forum will take place at Wanstead House on 24 October from 6.30pm – visit wavidi.co/forum

Thought for food In the third of a series of articles, Wanstead resident Roz Kara, founder of the Elated Eating campaign, looks at some of the vegetables you can plant now and enjoy throughout winter
J
ust before the rain and cold started in early September, I had a glut of tomatoes on the allotment. The kids and I ate most of them before they even made it home, but all the over-ripe, underripe and mushy tomatoes were put through the food processor to make chopped tomatoes and passata, which we will use all through winter. I freeze mine as it saves me having to sterilise all those jars and lids. Summer tomatoes are packed with vitamins and they keep well in the freezer. If you don’t have anywhere to grow vegetables, then try to buy local and seasonal produce. Eating seasonally has health benefits: fruits and vegetables in season contain the nutrients, minerals and trace elements that our bodies need at particular times of the year. Those that are coming into season now, such as butternut squash and apples, are packed with vitamin C to boost our resistance to winter colds. It also makes financial sense to eat seasonally as produce is sold more cheaply when there is plenty. If you are trying to grow your own but were not organised enough to plant them during spring or summer, don’t worry. Most winter vegetable plants are hardy and will cope well with cold winter weather, but if hard frosts threaten, you can always throw some hay across them to provide extra protection. You can plant onions, shallots, garlic and spring onions now and they will be ready for early spring. Just be careful not to plant over them when you sow your early spring crops. Another easy ‘cut and grow again’ vegetable with tons of goodness is spinach. If you plant this now, it will keep you supplied with young tasty leaves all through winter, and with regular harvesting, will continue to crop well
Lamb’s lettuce
into summer. Make sure you cut the flowers to prevent it turning to seed. Although I cannot stand them, autumn-sown broad beans are easy to grow and loved by many, and can be harvested in spring up to a month earlier than spring-sown plants. Sow tasty ‘cut and come again’ lettuce mixes under cover for harvesting throughout the winter months. Plant rows of lamb’s lettuce, land cress and mustard alongside to add a spicy, peppery flavour to your winter salads. For tasty, crisp heads of lettuce, you can also try winter gem. Growing winter vegetables outdoors will make good use of your plot or garden, but there are some crops that will need protection from the cold. These vegetables can be sown into cells and transplanted later into the soil borders of an unheated greenhouse. I don’t have a greenhouse yet, so will be braving the cold and covering with a polytunnel, and keeping everything crossed. Fabula Festival returns this month. Now in its fourth year, the cultural event has grown from two days of activities at Redbridge Central Library to a five-day festival across the borough. Anita Luby reports
F
abula, which means ‘stories’ in Latin, is a celebration of libraries and the arts. Organised by the Library Service and Culture Development Team, the festival brings together the very best in theatre, literature, music and creative arts and encourages festival attendees to discover their love of books and reading. Popular comic poet John Hegley launches the 2017 festival with The Potato Show at Wanstead Library on 12 October (7.30pm; £5). John is a regular sell-out at The Edinburgh Festival. He has performed at the Montreal Comedy Festival, with Ulrika Jonsson and Anita Dobson in The Pyjama Game and on BBC Radio 4’s Hearing with Hegley. John is widely known as one of the country’s most innovative comic poets with several best-selling volumes of poetry to his name. Signed copies of John’s books will be available to buy on the night. Also at Wanstead Library, award-winning writer Lottie Moggach will be talking about her unputdownable new novel Under the Sun on 13 October (7.30pm; £3). Lottie is the author of the critically acclaimed debut novel Kiss Me First – soon to be a major TV series for E4 and Netflix. Signed copies of Lottie’s book will also be available to buy on the night. Local schoolchildren will get the opportunity to meet former CBeebies presenter and acclaimed author Cerrie Burnell in a schoolsonly event, also at Wanstead Library. Cerrie will introduce the latest title in her muchloved series, Harper and the Fire Star, whilst over at Fulwell Cross Library, pre-schoolers will be able to enjoy a charming production of a children’s classic, Handa’s Surprise. This year, the kids will take over Redbridge Central Library during the weekend of 14 and
15 October. The fantastic children’s programme has been curated in collaboration with the Discover Storytelling Centre and will feature prominent children’s authors and illustrators, such as Adam Stower (Grumbug and The Troll and Oliver) Guy Parker Rees (Giraffes Can’t Dance), Trish Cooke (So Much) and Tolga Okogwu (Daddy Do My Hair). Kids will get the opportunity to explore creative writing with award-winning writer of the Poppy Pym series, Lauren Wood, whilst Kristyna Litten (Norton the Robot) will help youngsters create their own pet robot. Older kids can explore a range of creative tech workshops in the newly created Lab Central based at Redbridge Central Library. The festival will close with a spooktacular monster ball featuring popular party games. This is just a flavour of all the amazing events planned, so make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun! Fabula Festival 2017 will run from 11 to 15 October at libraries across Redbridge. For a full list of events, visit wavidi.co/fabula The Library and Culture Service is managed by Vision RCL on behalf of Redbridge Council.

As Redbridge Council extend their paidfor garden waste collection service to allow for autumnal cuttings and leaves, Steve Wilks and Scott Wilding explain why they believe the fledgling system still needs to grow
I
n December 2016, Redbridge Council announced it was cutting its free garden waste collection service in a bid to save £2m. Gardeners now have to fork out £50 for 50 biodegradable bags which are picked up every fortnight. The scheme was originally set to run between April and October, but has now been extended until 24 November. Many gardeners, however, have attacked the new service because they think it is ‘rubbish’. If gardeners use up all their bags then they have to pay for more or dispose of their garden waste at Chigwell Road recycling
centre. Given the size of the bags, it means the cost of disposing of green waste for an average house will easily exceed £50 a year. The green-fingered population of Wanstead has been furious with the new paid-for service, claiming the bags are flimsy, too small and tear at the first opportunity. Then, when the whole bag falls apart, people will dump it, something the council is trying to stop. There is also the potential that some people may mix green waste with general rubbish to get around the rules, making recycling more problematic when it needs to be sorted at the depot.
To advertise, call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com
October 2017 The council leader has said the free service had to be cut because the funding the council bagged for it in 2013 had run out. However, even in times of cuts there are choices. The council provides a free bulky waste collection service, which has not been scaled back or been made a paid-for option. Most residents would prioritise green waste collections over bulky waste as many have gardens in our leafy suburb. Bulky waste collection tends to be for one-off items and most people expect to pay for this anyway. It would have been prudent for the council to have realised the grant money would have run out eventually and not to have offered the free bulky waste collection in the first place. This change has been pushed through without any public consultation or long-term thought. While all London councils are making cuts to services and feeling financial pressures, Redbridge has increased the Council Tax, so residents are already contributing to the shortfall in revenues. Even in difficult economic times, it is crucial to maintain measures to protect our environment, encourage sustainability and look for cuts across a range of waste services, not drastically charge extra for one particular key service. Even more telling is that there are no concessionary charges for people on low incomes, so they will be disproportionately impacted. The council needed 10,000 residents to break even on this new scheme. Currently, at the time of writing, they have only 70% of this target, indicating the scheme is already running at a loss and putting the council in an even worse situation than before. Lots of London boroughs charge their residents for garden waste collection, but they offer a much better service. In neighbouring Havering, residents can order one or more 240-litre wheeled bins to put their garden waste into, which is collected every other week throughout the
year (except two weeks over Christmas) and disposed of for a fee of £45 per bin. Compared to the deal for Redbridge, 50 bags for seven months is poor value. Residents also claim the new scheme is causing ‘chaotic’ congestion at the Chigwell Road recycling centre in South Woodford, making the experience unpleasant and time-consuming. Many cars queue up at the tip, potentially to deliver just a bag of waste, resulting in unnecessary car journeys and associated pollution. It is more efficient to have one lorry picking up these bags as was the case previously. Schemes like this should be helping to make residents’ lives easier, not harder. Moreover, many residents are unaware of the implementation of the scheme. For example, leaflets have not been delivered to explain the new scheme to a lot of houses in the Woodford area. The council needs to press pause, take the temperature of local residents’ opinions and try to rework the practicalities of the scheme. Otherwise, the unintended consequences of a dirtier borough will become apparent, which will lead to longterm problems. There needs to be a rethink of the practicalities of enforcement and to ensure that our waste services meet the majority of council taxpayers’ needs, not just a subset of them. For more information on Redbridge Council’s garden waste collection service, visit wavidi.co/gardenwaste or call 020 8554 5000

For better not worse Boyd Sleator from the Northern Ireland Humanist section – who is in London for a landmark Supreme Court case – will be speaking in Wanstead this month. Paul Kaufman reports
T
his year marks the 50th anniversary of the Abortion Act and the Homosexual Law Reform Act. Passed in 1967, they helped create the more understanding country we live in today. Except there is one part of our kingdom that in many ways has been left behind: Northern Ireland. Eunan O’Kane and Laura Lacole
The speaker at this month’s East London Humanists meeting is Boyd Sleator, the dynamic development officer for the Northern Ireland Humanist section. Formed only last year, the group has already had a huge impact. Boyd will be in London for a landmark Supreme Court case due to commence the day after the meeting.
introduced by the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 to ensure that contentious legislation is not passed without cross-community support. Designed to avoid discrimination, it has been repeatedly used to block reforms that we have long enjoyed on the mainland.
Boyd has always been passionate about human rights and equality. The issues became even more important to him when his twin sons were born in 2014. “I want my kids and future generations to live without bigotry, sectarianism, homophobia and racism in a fair and secular society,” said Boyd.
Another battleground is gay rights. Northern Ireland is the last corner of the British Isles where gay marriage is not permitted. Despite approval from a majority of NI Assembly members, the DUP used their veto to block it. A challenge by two couples was rejected by the NI Court of Appeal in August.
One early victory came in June when Belfast High Court gave the go-ahead for football star Eunan O’Kane and public speaker and model Laura Lacole to celebrate a Humanist marriage. They married two weeks later. However, the ruling was almost immediately challenged by the Northern Ireland government and there are ongoing Court of Appeal proceedings.
Northern Ireland also has some of the harshest laws on abortion in the world. It remains illegal in all but the most extreme cases. The maximum sentence is life imprisonment. One recent prosecution concerns a mother who obtained medication for her 15-yearold daughter pregnant from an abusive relationship. Boyd will be at the Supreme Court with Humanists UK to argue that Northern Ireland’s law does not comply with the European Convention on Human Rights.
This is just one example of the struggle against the forces of extreme religious conservatism. It is disquieting that Theresa May has entered into an alliance with the DUP, a party at the forefront of fighting the movement for greater equality. One mechanism the DUP uses to veto progress is the so-called ‘Petition of Concern.’ It was

Participative poetry Aldersbrook resident Jane Grell is not only involved in October’s Black History Month events, she is also a teacher and a poet, and has recently published Mosquito Bounce, a book of poems for schoolchildren
I
am a storyteller, writer, teacher and poet based in Aldersbrook. I grew up in the picturesque village of Delices in Dominica, which is situated in the eastern Caribbean. After attending the Convent High School in Roseau (the capital of Dominica), I moved to New York to study for a bachelor’s degree in French at Fordham University. I then moved to France to study for a postgraduate diploma in French at Poitiers University before finally settling in London after completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the Institute of Education. I now visit schools, colleges, libraries and community groups throughout the UK and abroad, enthralling children and adults of all ages and cultures. I am an experienced INSET facilitator for teachers, demonstrating and encouraging the use of poetry and storytelling to develop literary creativity within the curriculum. I have contributed to Scholastic publications in both aural and written forms and am also a frequent reviewer of their story and poetry books. A published poet for both children and adults, my last poetry collection, White River Blues, was published in 2016. I have also worked with BBC School Radio as an advisor on the multicultural content of its output, as well as presenting poetry and stories for its primary schools’ programme. My latest book, Mosquito Bounce, is a compilation of participative poems for primary schoolchildren; it is divided into two sections: one for younger children (four- to seven-year-olds) and the second for an older age group (eight- to 12-year-olds). At the heart of the collection is universal childhood experience, whether it is the infant
transformed into a girl astronaut or sailor boy in Nanny’s Swivelling Chair, or as in Magical Bus Ride, when children confidently confront perils from the safety of their top deck, such as a raft of hungry crocodiles and a giant in his dressing gown. For older children, similarly, the poems are an entry point for self-expression and creativity and have been tried and tested as oral and writing stimuli. A teacher from London’s Ruislip Gardens Primary School wrote: “The children have written some amazing poetry in response to you reciting them some of yours.” Though rich, riotous and rhythmic, Mosquito Bounce does not, however, shy away from the more sombre side of life. In Voice from the Ghetto, an ambitious boy looks on the world with hope, despite the problems around him. I hope my latest offering will inspire participation and self-expression among children at home, in the classroom or playground. Jane is available for school assemblies and workshops. For more information and to order a copy of Mosquito Bounce (Papillote Press; £7.99), visit wavidi.co/grell

Take it outside Outdoor classrooms are important for children, says Shona O’Neill from Wanstead’s Little Bear’s Nursery, who would like to encourage all parents to be aware of their child’s development
C
hildren need space to be children, to run, jump, climb, race and create mess. Outdoor classrooms can give them all this and the ability to work on a larger scale, as emphasised by the Early Years Foundation Stage. When outdoors, children have the freedom to explore and develop their physical boundaries, to take risks and to discover the real world using all their senses – creating positive effects on a child’s self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing. Young children need the opportunity to use their whole body and develop their gross motor skills. Only when they have mastered these will they be able to control their fine motor skills, such as using a knife and fork or holding a pencil, for instance. Physical play allows children to expel energy and develop their physical capabilities, providing excellent multidisciplinary learning opportunities, especially for young children whose learning is best achieved through both sensory and physical experiences. Activities such as ball games, riding bikes and simple playground games can be undertaken in groups or as a solitary experience; however, they provide an excellent way of promoting discussion and an understanding of risks and rule setting, as well as improving coordination, learning about the natural environment and healthy lifestyles. Outdoor activities, such as making a bug house, involve planning, knowledge of insects and their habitats, discussing materials and their properties, measuring and construction methods. They provide numerous learning opportunities across many curriculum areas,
allowing real-life problems to be discussed and answers tested – far more memorable than reciting numbers! Children need opportunities to explore and discover the natural environment. Observing worms moving in the soil, examining bugs under rocks, listening to birdsong and experiencing different weather patterns provide an open platform to question and extend children’s knowledge and vocabulary, as well as providing a means to discuss more mundane issues like hygiene and safety. Most nursery outdoor areas will include a role play area, which children can adapt to impose their own meaning. These areas provide opportunities for rich sociodynamic play where children use their imagination in a safe and secure environment. The Early Years Foundation Stage emphasises the need for all children to have daily access to outdoor areas, and for adults to provide opportunities to explore and learn in safe and secure but challenging environments. 20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the 10th of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding offers his thanks to all those who have supported them
I
n September, we finally turned 20. For a community-based organisation run by volunteers, it’s quite a milestone. We held our birthday party in Gallery 84 on Nightingale Lane and would like to thank the Wilkinson family for their kind support in allowing us to have our party there for free. The Wilkinson’s generosity has been typical of the support we have had over the last two decades, and this is not forgotten. Many local businesses, including The Nightingale, The Manor House, The Duke, Belgique and a whole host of other businesses have either allowed us to use their premises for social events for free or donated gifts to us. We would like to publicly say thank you to all of you for your ongoing support. It has not only been the generosity of local businesses but also the willingness of Wanstead residents to support and back the campaigns we have promoted. These have ranged from planting more trees on the High Street, establishing the Wanstead Gardening Club, converting the planters by Wanstead station into flower beds, securing more bins and benches in local parks and standing up for planning, parking and cleaning issues in the area. The list literally goes on and on. We can’t do what we do without the support and, just as importantly, the funds that members provide. It costs about £1,000 a year to run the society, with our largest costs being printing, room hire, social events and website maintenance. Every other cost is covered by volunteers. And we don’t just rely on our members for funds. By printing annual calendars and adopting the Hermon Hill recycling site, we have found ways to generate income to cover our costs. This has
meant that, over the last 20 years, we have been able to pay for more bins, benches and trees all over Wanstead, donated over £1,000 to the children’s playground on Christchurch Green and make small donations to other local causes. There is, as ever, always more we can fund, always many more projects we can support. As a designated Small Charity, we are able to do a great deal, although we do not have charitable status so are not yet allowed to claim the benefits that would bring. The last 20 years have seen huge changes socially, politically and to the fabric of where we live. We remain committed to doing what we can to keep our community a good place to live, bring up kids and do business. And we thank everyone – past and present – who has helped us in this aim. We hope to do you proud over the next 20 years. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation that works to protect, preserve and improve the local area. Membership is £10 per household per year. Visit wansteadsociety.org.uk

Wanstead residents know only too well what it’s like to lose a local police station. With Woodford station now under threat as part of the Mayor of London’s plans to save £400m by 2020, South Woodford resident Nat Pabla is seeking neighbourly support to help save the High Road station
S
everal years ago, I heard what sounded like an intruder in the house in the middle of the night. The noise had woken us all up, and as we listened on, the noises from downstairs continued. In the end, we telephoned the police. It took them less than 10 minutes to arrive and we were extremely grateful to the team of officers who checked both outside and inside the house. We were fortunate this was a false alarm; the noise had most likely carried in the night air from a neighbouring house. The police officers reassured us they were glad it was a false alarm and said we shouldn’t feel guilty for calling them.
Imagine the scenario had there been an actual intruder and the police were far away in Ilford. That’s a long time to wait when there’s an intruder in your home. This will be the reality should the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and the Metropolitan Police’s plan to close Woodford Police Station go ahead. Other, much less dramatic scenarios can be imagined. For example, cyclists who have an accident in the area may find their bikes being stored for safekeeping in Ilford until they can be collected. What else do the local police do? That’s the point – they’re local. We know where they are; quite often we know who they are. They can attend incidents quickly and they won’t be spending time travelling from Ilford when we need them most. Crime

prevention activities and crime-fighting ability is influenced by distance, journey time and physical location of a previous call-out in a way that can currently be managed. I decided to get involved and to raise awareness of the proposal as Redbridge is already poorly served with police stations since the closure of Wanstead’s station in 2013. Should Woodford Police Station also close, a borough with a population of nearly 280,000 (as at the 2011 census) will be left with police officers based solely in Barkingside and Ilford, thus completely ignoring the needs of residents in the western part of the borough.
I believe the closure of this station will lead to a reduction in the level of service provided by police officers. Their time should be spent combating crime and not travelling. A public meeting about the closure of police contact points in Redbridge will take place on 2 October from 6pm at the Jack Carter Pavilion on Oakfield Playing Fields, Ilford, IG6 2JL. A public consultation on the Mayor of London’s plans runs until 6 October. Through the roof Debra Rose of local solicitors Wiseman Lee has seen an increase in the number of clients seeking to challenge the legitimacy of ground rent charges. Here, she explores the issues surrounding leasehold homes
T
his country has had leasehold homes for centuries, but in recent months, the media has been swamped with stories of unscrupulous landlords pushing ground rents to unsustainable levels. The government has stepped in and is proposing a complete ban on new houses being sold as leasehold, and reducing ground rents to zero. Communities Secretary Sajid Javid told the BBC: “Enough is enough. These practices are unjust, unnecessary and need to stop.” But why has this become an issue now? Traditionally, houses were sold as freehold and flats were sold as leasehold. The reason for leasehold flats was simply that the lease would deal with common areas to avoid disputes between neighbours. Leasehold property owners were generally charged nominal or peppercorn ground rents, sometimes as little as £1 a year, and many freeholders did not bother to collect it. But in recent years, developers started to insert clauses into leasehold contracts setting ground rent at £200 to £400 a year, doubling every 10 years. At the same time, new-house builders started to sell their houses on a leasehold basis. This wasn’t necessarily a case of builders jumping on the gravy train, though clearly some developers were less scrupulous than others. In the past, when most houses were sold on a freehold basis, local authorities were prepared to take over the common areas of new estates once the houses had been sold. Increasingly, this is not the case, as local authorities do not have the resources to take on this financial burden. So, the maintenance obligations were, in many cases, passed to private management companies who, in addition to service charges, recognised that ground rents were also a potentially lucrative income stream.
The problem is that as time goes by, and ground rents that once appeared to be set at a modest sum have grown to unjustifiable levels, homeowners are finding it increasingly difficult to sell. The Nationwide building society, for one, is refusing mortgages against homes with onerous ground rent clauses, while conveyancing solicitors are warning prospective buyers off. The Leasehold Knowledge Partnership estimates around 100,000 homebuyers are trapped in contracts with spiralling ground rents. Leaseholders who hope to solve the problem by buying their freehold are frequently finding the cost prohibitive. Canny landlords have stepped in to buy freeholds from the developers because they recognised that a rent that doubles every ten years is effectively a return on investment of 7% a year. That is a guaranteed and legally enforceable income at a time when the base rate is just 0.25%. The fact that the government has stepped in is to be welcomed. Whether the solution they come up with solves the problems that leaseholders face remains to be seen. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead – call 020 8215 1000

In the seventh of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society, remembers the late Colin Pryke and introduces us to young baritone singer Cameron Davies
T
his autumn, Redbridge Music Society opens its 69th season at Wanstead Library with a vocal recital of popular operatic arias and songs in celebration of the life and work of the Society’s longstanding chairman, the late Colin Pryke, a much-respected figure in the musical world of Redbridge. After taking early retirement from teaching, Colin wholeheartedly devoted himself full-time to managing the Redbridge Music Society’s activities. His tenacious spirit and musical acumen ensured that the society endured and musically prospered over the many, often financially difficult, years of its existence. We are indebted to Colin’s solid groundwork and enormous input. Besides arranging regular recitals and illustrated talks – often given by internationally famous musicians – Colin organised a number of orchestral concerts in Redbridge and pioneered our youth musical support and development scheme, which continues to this day. It is apposite that Colin’s memorial recital will be given by the young up-and-coming baritone singer Cameron Davies. Cameron is 22 years of age and was educated at Leyton Sixth Form College. He is currently studying for a BMus degree at the Birmingham Conservatoire and is specialising in operatic singing. He has already performed at a number of venues in the UK and has sung locally for the Ilford Operatic and Dramatic Society. He was a finalist in the Stratford and East London Young Musician of the Year competition and was runner-up in the 2015 Essex Young Musician of the Year. He has established a wide repertoire that encompasses German lieder, opera and

operetta and songs from Broadway musicals. Although specialising in singing, Cameron is particularly interested in the social application of music. This will be Cameron’s first appearance for the Redbridge Music Society and he will be accompanied on piano by his mother, Cathy Davies, who is a piano teacher at Woodford Green Preparatory School, Bancroft’s School and Trinity RC High School. She is also the official accompanist for the Stratford and East London Music Festival and is manager of the West Essex Music Cooperative. Cathy has a wide knowledge of many repertoires and is in high demand to accompany musicians for all grades of music examinations and for concerts and chamber recitals. In addition, Cathy is a regular accompanist for choirs and for ballet, tap and modern dance classes. She is particularly delighted to be accompanying her son at the Colin Pryke memorial recital. The Colin Pryke memorial recital will take place at Wanstead Library on 31 October from 8pm (tickets on the door; visitors: £10; Redbridge Music Society members: £7).
