Welcome... Having previously used this space to celebrate the successes of Team GB in Rio, I feel I must now shout even louder in order to acknowledge the “magnificent performance of Paralympics GB” (not my words, the words of the Queen, no less). The disabled athletes (a misnomer in this context) were able to win 80 more medals than their able-bodied counterparts and, to continue the Queen’s words, the success “reflects the talent and commitment of the athletes.” Her Majesty’s remarks echo the themes of dedication and motivation about which I also waxed lyrical last month. Themes which ultimately inspired a comparison with the behind-the-scenes work of those who organise and stage our local community events. The annual trio of the Wanstead Fringe, Wanstead Festival and Art Trail Wanstead may have now crossed their respective finish lines for another year, but just as our athletes won’t be resting for too long, neither will Wanstead. I know this from our events listings, which always require heavy editing to fit. I know this from our advertisers, who recognise that Wanstead has a responsive audience. I know this from our writers, who always have something to say. And I know this from our readers, who, quite simply, tell me they read this publication with interest. I once again had the pleasure to meet some of those readers at the Wanstead Festival last month. From the young couple who moved to Wanstead from Hackney to enjoy the greener surroundings reminiscent of their country background, to the older couple who explained how they moved here after visiting their daughter and falling in love with the area, our readers may have diverse backgrounds, but they also have a common respect for where they live and an understanding that they are part of something good: they are all Lee Marquis, Editor members of Team Wanstead.

Calling local residents... The Wanstead Village Directory proudly supports local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Help us help these businesses by mentioning the Wanstead Village Directory when responding to adverts.

A note to businesses... If you are a business that is based in Wanstead, or has a presence in the local community, then we can help you get your message across to our readers. The deadline for inclusion in the November 2016 edition is 18 October 2016. The Wanstead Village Directory is published monthly and distributed to homes in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook. Art Trail Wanstead: ‘art can be made of anything and be created by anyone’ Last month’s 16-day Art Trail Wanstead – which saw over 100 artists display work in 50 different local venues – featured the use of a wide range materials. But one of the most popular mediums on show was a creative material most people have used at some point: Lego. The largescale Lego-making workshop at the Wanstead Festival was a part of the art trail presence and was a big hit. “We had more than 120 individual models on display that children and their families built. More than 250 people got involved in building during the day,” said local Lego artist

Lee McGinty. The festival also gave visitors the opportunity to build on to the Circle of Life installation created by artist Michael Nash, which arched over one of the entrances to Christchurch Green.

Sainsbury’s in Wanstead

Celebrating the best

Sainsbury’s has decided not to progress their plans for a new store at the former Barclays Bank site on Wanstead High Street. “Clearly this was not an easy decision to make and we’re grateful for people’s patience and support. We will now be marketing the site to interested parties so we bring the building back into use as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson, who added: “We remain very interested in opening a new shop in Wanstead.”

The Mayor of Redbridge is urging residents to honour people who have made a big difference to the borough by recommending them for an award. Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Mayor’s Community Awards until 30 December. A panel of councillors, officers and people from the local community will then meet to shortlist the nominations and select winners in several different categories. Visit wavidi.co/mca17

England women’s cricket captain inspires girls in Wanstead

New constituency boundaries: Leytonstone and Wanstead

England women’s cricket captain Heather Knight visited Wanstead last month to help coach young girls starting out in the sport. “She did some cricket drills (slog and sweep shots) with the girls followed by a game where she bowled and batted with them. We then had a question and answer session followed by photos… It was a great way for us as a club to celebrate our 150th year and also for the girls to be coached and inspired by her,” said Saba Nasim, captain of the Wanstead ladies’ cricket team.

The Boundary Commission for England has published its latest proposals for redrawing parliamentary constituency boundaries and reducing the number of MPs from 650 to 600. If accepted, the proposals – which are open to consultation until December – will see the creation of a new Leytonstone and Wanstead constituency, which will include sections of Walthamstow. John Cryer, MP for the current Leyton and Wanstead constituency, has expressed disappointed in the plans. Visit wavidi.co/lwconstituency

Redbridge Mayor Councillor Gurdial Bhamra was the guest of honour at a reception at the Eightyfour Gallery in Nightingale Lane last month, which raised over £600 for Haven House Children’s Hospice. On show was the work of 13 local photographers, who had each submitted three images for judging. The Mayor announced Colin Murphy as the overall winner. “It was a fantastic evening and despite the rain 130 people turned up to see the pictures and they donated generously to the raffle,” said gallery owner Geoff Wilkinson.

Wanstead Rugby Club ’s 125th season gets underway

Join a fungi identification walk in Bush Wood this autumn

Felix Harris attacks for Wanstead RFC

Jelly ear

Wanstead RFC started their 125th season last month with a 50–14 win in a friendly game against Warlingham. Founded in 1892 as Leytonstone RFC, it is the second oldest rugby club in Essex. During the Second World War, they were the only rugby team in east London to carry on playing, acting as a magnet to all returning servicemen in the area. In 1973 the club moved to its current Roding Lane North location. A number of events are planned to mark the 125th season, including a club tour to Croatia. Visit wansteadrfc.com

Local botanist Tricia Moxey will be leading a fungi identification walk through Bush Wood this month. “Bush Wood traditionally has a rich diversity of fungi during the autumn, and they come in many different colours… Tricia is an expert on the identification and life cycle of fungi, so expect to learn some fascinating facts,” said Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife Group. The free event (booking required) will take place on 23 October from 10.30am, starting from the Quaker Meeting House, Bush Road. Call 07505 482 328

Fire walk and fireworks

Libraries across Redbridge will be taking part in an international celebration of Star Wars and reading this month as they invite local children to take part in the fifth annual Star Wars Reads Day. “May the force be with libraries as we offer special sci-fi storytimes across the borough and craft drop-in events… fancy dress is encouraged,” said a library spokesperson. Free events in Wanstead will take place at 11am and 2pm on 15 October.

Wanstead residents are invited to a night of fire walking and fireworks next month. Haven House Children’s Hospice and Woodford RFC are joining together for the event on 4 November. “The Haven House fire walk begins at 7pm, when you can put your bravery to the test by walking across 20 feet of wood embers burning at 1,236°F,” said a spokesperson for the Woodford Green charity. Paint: ‘don’t leave it in the shed – give it to us instead!’

A recycling group based in Walthamstow is encouraging Wanstead residents to help them recycle unused paint. The Paint Place – which is run by the Forest Recycling Project, one of 76 community repaint schemes across the UK – collects and resells donated paint from local waste facilities. “Liquid paint is never supposed to go in landfill, but if you put it in your household waste bags that’s exactly where it ends up,” said a spokesperson. “Please take your leftover paint to the Chigwell Road Recycling Centre instead.” Visit wavidi.co/frp

The Wren Wildlife Group is inviting residents to join them as they identify and count the newly arrived wintering ducks and grebes in Wanstead Park this month. “October is the time of year when our lakes suddenly have some new visitors: wildfowl that arrive here from northern Europe to escape the harsh winter. Expect to see gadwall, shoveler, pochard, tufted duck and maybe a teal or two,” said Tim Harris, who will lead the free walk on 16 October from 10am (meet at the park’s tea hut). A local gateway to India

Orange Tree is still in business

An exhibition that explores the links between India and Redbridge will be on show at Redbridge Museum from 18 October to 28 January. The borough’s links to India stretch back to 1615 when Sir Thomas Roe of Woodford secured a base for the East India Company on the coast of Gujarat. Company merchants subsequently used their wealth to build magnificent estates in Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford. Visit wavidi.co/india

Despite closing their store – which has been a feature of the High Street for 20 years – The Orange Tree will continue to operate in Wanstead. Owner and local resident Rachel Root will now offer made-to-measure furnishing and design advice from her new studio in The Corner House. “We specialise in colour planning using Little Greene paints, which, being English Heritage endorsed, are perfect for Wanstead’s houses.” Visit wavidi.co/ot

With a guiding theme inspired by David Bowie’s Changes, last month’s 16-day Art Trail Wanstead featured more than 100 artists exhibiting work in about 50 different venues. Donna Mizzi takes one last look at some of the work that was on show

S

ome of the materials used in this year’s art trail included glass, fabric, stone, pottery, mirror, beads, chairs, thermal flasks and wax, breadcrumbs and fennel. On the first weekend of the 16-day trail, special art stalls and workshops – and a portrait drawing session – were held at the Flamingo Fair in Wanstead Library. Then the Meet The Artists events gave an opportunity for the public to have a greater insight into the work on display and meet some of the people running their local businesses. Darrell Toakley of Darrell James Travel literally rolled out the red carpet, encouraging visitors to enjoy the art while they were also tempted to book holidays by the stunning travel scenes on his displays. Meanwhile, artist Irene Pulga ran an evening collage session for adults, one of several popular creative workshops held during the two-week period. The trail aims to be a positive force for art, businesses and the community. It’s also brilliant that some shops, including Wanstead Fish and The Manor House, have been keeping work on display throughout the year. We hope that even more businesses will go in that direction, to make Wanstead more colourful and fascinating. Art Trail Wanstead in organised annually by Art Group Wanstead, which is made up of amateur and professional artists. Membership to the group is free. field of dreams If you’re going to dream, you might as well dream big. And that’s just what people, particularly children, did during last month’s art trail when asked to make suggestions for Evergreen Field. Donna Mizzi reports

E

vergreen Field, the overgrown, fencedoff, privately owned field on the edge of Christchurch Green has had proposals for developments turned down in the past. Redbridge Council’s planning policy now protects the land, but an interesting variety of green ideas should still be possible. However, it’s most unlikely to take the shape of a volcano on the site, as desired by two enthusiastic children. A castle, giant sweet shop or toy store would also contravene the planning guidelines. Other ideas popular with adults and children included a lido or wild swimming pond. But why stop there? Two sisters ambitiously outlined how a kayaking waterway could wind its way around the site, with a cliff face at its edge. And if building a cliff was not possible, they outlined how a climbing wall could suffice. Other ideas from adults included: a community allotment site and shop, a garden centre, a sculpture park, a nature reserve, an open-air cinema, a non-permanent structure for local events, a semi-open area for theatrical productions, a maze, an art and craft centre, an adventure park for older children, a playground for pets or a gym for the elderly. A field of sunflowers or of lavender was also put forward, along with several calls for a sensory garden plus a fascinating winter garden. Children used drawings and collages to show their concepts of everything they would love to visit in central Wanstead, from a butterfly farm to the world’s next Jurassic Park. Wanstead Art Trail’s Lego workshop at the Wanstead Festival even triggered a call for a Legoland on the field.

A spokesperson for the art trail said: “Naturally, it will take the owner of the field some time to digest these ideas. But as artists, we’d urge the owner, Dalco Developments, to think creatively; an empty field isn’t earning its upkeep while it could be a boon for Wanstead and provide a good return without being turned into yet another development. [Local blog] Wansteadium has previously identified a garden centre for the site as one of the most viable commercial options, and that could also give scope for the land to be beautiful, useful and accessible, and perhaps even incorporate some of the other garden ideas.” Do you have other suggestions for the use Wanstead’s Evergreen Field? If so, email info@wansteadvillagedirectory.com

Africas Great War i

As part of Black History Month celebrations across Redbridge, you are invited to join historian Nick Dobson at Wanstead Library for an illustrated look at the First World War in Africa

T

Who was the first British soldier to fire a shot in the Great War? Drummer Edward Thomas at the Battle of Mons on 22 August 1914 usually gets the credit. However, the first shot by a British Empire soldier was fired in Africa. Germany’s West African Togoland colony was poorly defended, but was strategically important, containing radio transmitters linking Germany to shipping in the South Atlantic. A detachment from the British Gold Coast Regiment invaded Togoland and on 7 August 1914 they came under fire from a patrol of German-led police. Alhaji Grunshi returned fire and became the first soldier in British service to fire a shot in the war. Grunshi survived the war and in March 1919, now a sergeant, was awarded the Military Medal. The West African campaign was over by early 1916. In southern Africa, the British Empire quelled a Boer revolt and South African forces were victorious in German South-West Africa. In East Africa, the war became protracted and costly in terms of resources. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck fought a guerilla campaign against overwhelming odds and thousands of British Empire forces were tied down chasing Lettow-Vorbeck and his Schutztruppe. On 13 November 1918, two days after the Armistice was signed in France, the German Army took Kasama in northern Rhodesia and the formal German surrender in Africa didn’t take place until 23 November.

he First World War was a global conflict with countries from every continent drawn in. But the African theatre of war was just a minor sideshow, right? Well, I think it was rather more than that. The first and last shots of the war were fired in Africa and the conflict cast a shadow over the continent that lasted for the rest of the 20th century. RSM Alhaji Grunshi

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck

Africa’s Great War wasn’t just limited to fighting on the African continent. France alone mobilised over 600,000 men from her colonies and many of them were brought to fight on the Western Front. African soldiers suffered discrimination. Kande Kamara, a Guinean soldier in the French Army who survived the war, said: “We were black and we were nothing… They actually underestimated us, and disgraced and dishonoured us.” The Great War hastened independence for African nations. The war politicised many Africans who had suffered from the conflict and its aftermath. Colonial powers no longer had the resources to subjugate a rising tide of nationalism. It would take another global conflict, plus many bloody wars of independence in Africa, but the Great War had sown the seeds that would germinate and grow into the independent Africa of the 21st century. Nick’s talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 19 October from 6.30pm to 8pm (free). For more information, call 020 8532 9093 or email nick.dobson@rocketmail.com

Wanstead Village Directory

In

memory of . . .

In the fifth of a series of articles looking at the lives behind the names found on the memorials and plaques at St Mary's Church in Wanstead, Robert Martin offers some insight into the three-year research project

T

he last four editions of the Wanstead Village Directory have looked at the lives of people commemorated on the memorials and plaques found in St Mary the Virgin Church in Wanstead. The research for these four individuals was part of a much larger project, which started in July 2013 and is now almost complete. The project’s objective was to produce a small booklet outlining the lives of the people commemorated in the church and describe their connection to Wanstead and especially to the church. Those readers who know the church will be aware of its historical importance, being the only Grade I listed building in Redbridge. Basically unaltered since its completion in 1790, its proportions, light and space have a significant impact on the visitor. On entering the building, they will be drawn to the stunning memorial commemorating Sir Josiah Child; amongst many other posts, he was governor of the East India Company in the 17th century. On looking around, they will see many other tributes to long-departed individuals. But just who were these people and what was their contribution to Wanstead? Answering this question became the focus and objective of the booklet. Research has been carried out using various internet-based search engines and many interesting discoveries and connections have been made. An example being that Sir Josiah Child was closely involved with royalty and paid King Charles II £10,000 a year for a privileged status as a ‘merchant without parliamentary interference’. Others were found to have royal associations as well; Sir William Curtis was a personal friend of King George IV. Connections were also found to Russian royalty through the de Hubbenet family.

© Geoff Wilkinson

28

While most of the individuals commemorated came from privileged backgrounds, some had humble beginnings, like Robert Sheaf (1835– 1894), who became a respected teacher at Wanstead National School. From countries across the globe and from great wealth to poverty, the people commemorated in this church have all played their part in the history of this country, and of Wanstead. A very recent addition to the memorials in the church records the life of Peter Brown, who died suddenly in June 2015. Churchwarden and chorister, his full obituary is recorded on the church website. Special mention should be made of the East of London Family History Society, who have generously agreed to fund the printing of the booklet, with all proceeds going towards maintaining the fabric of this very special and significant building. A booklet documenting the memorials in St Mary the Virgin Church, Overton Drive, Wanstead will be available from the bookstalls in St Mary’s and at Christ Church. T

his will be the last of these articles, and I’m finishing with a tree that is so abundant in this country, the fruits are readily available for foraging to make a red, fruity autumnal jam I call ‘Hedgerow Jelly’.

Known as the May tree as it flowers in that month (“ne’er cast a clout till May is out” refers to the blossom rather than the end of the month), the hawthorn has a long history of myth and folklore, as well as being used to help heal many conditions of the body, and is also very beneficial to wildlife. Many species of moth caterpillar and other insects feed on the blossoms; birds nest in the thorny branches, safe from predators; and the berries provide ample food for several bird species and small mammals. The hawthorn is a member of the rose family, and since time immemorial, has been planted as hedgerows to deter trespassers, and indeed, in old English ‘haw’ means ‘hedge’. Then, when the Enclosure Acts were passed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the business of selling hawthorn shrubs blossomed as landowners were actively encouraged to use the hawthorn to enclose land they regarded as their own, whether it was or not, and 200,000 miles of hawthorn hedging were planted. In Celtic mythology it was revered as sacred and lone trees were thought to be inhabited

by ‘faeries’. Wilfully damaging or removing a hawthorn could have fatal consequences, brought upon the perpetrator by its supernatural guardians. Although small branches were cut to decorate the outside of houses and the May festivals, it was considered very unlucky to bring the flowers indoors. In fact, during the Great Plague, it was commented that the smell of the blossom was similar to a house in which a death had occurred. Later, botanists discovered that the chemical trimethylamine is present in hawthorn blossom, which is also one of the first chemicals formed in decaying animal tissue. In the past, when corpses would have been kept in the house for several days prior to burial, people would have been very familiar with the smell of death, so it is hardly surprising that hawthorn blossom was so unwelcome in the house. So, let’s go foraging in the hedgerows. Make sure you’re not on someone’s enclosed land and watch out for faeries! You might need some leather gloves to avoid being scratched too much by the thorns and a large container. You could also add some elderberries, blackberries and rosehips if you see them. But here is a word of warning. The fruit itself is safe, but the seeds of the hawthorn and the elderberry are very poisonous, so don’t eat them whole!

Wanstead resident Mike Edwards has a passion for preparing food and drink from ingredients he has grown or foraged for himself. Here he reveals his recipe for Hedgerow Jelly in the sixth and last of a series of articles exploring unsung heroes of the fruit and veg world

Mike’s recipe for Hedgerow Jelly: zz Use roughly equal quantities of foraged, washed berries and cooking or crab apples, say 1kg in total. zz Chop the unpeeled, uncored apples into chunks, add the berries, cover with water in a large pan, bring to the boil and simmer until the fruits are soft and pulpy, occasionally mashing the mix gently (up to an hour). zz Cool and tip into a jelly bag or muslin cloth and allow to strain into a bowl overnight.

© Mike Edwards

zz For every 600ml of resulting liquid, add about 450g of granulated sugar. Slowly bring to the boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar, then boil hard for about eight minutes. zz Then comes testing time to see if it’s set. I overcooked the first Hedgerow Jelly I ever made and within a fortnight it had set rock solid in the jars. Check the professional advice for setting jams and for storing in sterilised jars. This rich, red jelly is excellent on buttered bread and goes well with a tangy goat’s cheese, hams and roast meats, especially game. Enjoy your store of homemade jams and chutneys over the winter months. When foraging for fruit, please ensure you are not trespassing and follow The Countryside Code – visit wavidi.co/cscode

Man of mystery To mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, Janet Seward will be exploring what we do and do not know about England’s greatest playwright at Wanstead Library this month

W

illiam Shakespeare has been a household name for much of the 400 years since his death, but we hardly know the man at all. There is no authenticated picture of him, so although we all recognise attributed likenesses, nobody really knows what he looked like! We don’t know how he spelt his name or how he pronounced it. We don’t know his birthdate and we only know the bare facts of his personal life. Five whole years of his life are a complete mystery! Yet, when the First Folio, a collection of his plays, was produced in 1623, his contemporary Ben Jonson hailed him as ‘not of an age but for all time’. This prediction has certainly come true as the Globe Theatre has spent the last two years touring Hamlet around 197 countries and 202 venues. Shakespeare probably came to London in the late 1580s and was certainly there by 1590. He became an actor-playwright and part-owner of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men (later known as the King’s Men under James I). He was more playwright and director, although he did act and was reputed to play the ghost in Hamlet. During his career, Shakespeare wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two narrative poems and a few other poems. His plays cover every kind of plot. In the early years of his career, he wrote the histories and the comedies. The tragedies came next, probably the highpoint of his career. He then wrote his Roman plays and the romances or tragicomedies. His sonnets have added further mystery to an already mysterious life. The first 126 sonnets appear to be written to a man and the rest to the ‘dark lady’. This has led to speculation about his sexuality and his commitment to his marriage, but no definitive conclusions.

Shakespeare returned to Stratford-uponAvon in 1611 at the young age of 47 and retired. He had wealth, property and a very respectable portfolio of work and he died in 1616 a famous playwright. A few decades after his death, the monarchy was abolished and the English Commonwealth governed for 18 years from 1642 until the Restoration in 1660. During that time there was no formal theatre, and when the theatres opened again, the taste was for the topical references and light and bawdy comedy of Restoration drama. Shakespeare’s plays were still staged but he was less fashionable. This decline in popularity was reversed by the great 18thcentury actor David Garrick, who did much to promote Shakespeare, including organising a Shakespeare Jubilee in 1769 and declaring him ‘the god of our idolatry’. Since then, Shakespeare has remained the world’s premier playwright. Janet’s talk for the Wanstead Historical Society will take place at Wanstead Library on 20 October from 8pm (visitors: £3). t’s October again and it’s time for the Essex Art Club’s annual exhibition at Wanstead House. On show will be a large collection of original and diverse paintings by members of this historic organisation.

© Julian de Camillis

The Essex Art Club, which evolved from a sketch club for tutors and students at the Walthamstow School of Art in 1899, consists of both professional and amateur artists, and Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Frank Brangwyn and Sir Alfred Munnings are all former members. One of our current members is Alan Scarff, who paints in oils. He says: “I like the way you can push oil paint around to create effects. Also, it’s a fine medium for beginners because you can always correct mistakes. I like to paint London scenes inhabited by London people going about their business.” Another member taking part in the exhibition is Julian de Camillis. Born in north London to a musical and artistic family, Julian has ‘loved the smell of oil paint’ from an early age and remembers trips to Hampstead Heath where his dad would paint while he and his sister played nearby. “I have always sketched but didn’t paint until around 1980. Having seen paintings by Edward Seago, my interest in painting surfaced again. I am mostly self-taught, other than a few art classes and holidays, including tuition by John Tookey and the late Debra Manifold. I enjoy painting on location (plein air) and have always been inspired by the big skies and estuaries of East Anglia and regard myself as a representational painter with a touch of impressionism.” So, if you’re looking to buy an early and special Christmas present or would just like to have a look at some wonderful paintings, come on down to Wanstead House.

The Essex Art Club Autumn Exhibition will take place at Wanstead House on 29 and 30 October (10am to 4.30pm; free entry). Visit essexartclub.co.uk

Probate debates The number of probate disputes being dealt with by the courts is increasing exponentially and there are two main reasons for this, says Stephen Watmore of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

T

he first reason for an increase in the number of probate disputes is that families are a lot more complicated than they were in the past. Higher rates of divorce over recent decades have created second and third families. This has increased the scope for arguments after family members die. Also, nowadays, many more unmarried couples are cohabiting as compared to years gone by. Unless they have made wills, they have no legal right to benefit from their partner’s estate on death, and this has contributed significantly to the spike in the number of contentious probate claims. Second, the rise in home ownership and increase in house prices mean that even people who have always lived modestly may have something worth fighting over when they die. Add to this the fact that people are living longer and becoming vulnerable through years of mental decline and the potential for disputes is obvious. This is why it is so important to take advice and make a will. There are strict rules for the making of a will. It must be in writing, signed by the testator in the presence of two independent witnesses, who have themselves signed it in the presence of the testator. Even if these requirements are met, the validity of the will may still be challenged, for instance, on the grounds that the testator did not know and approve the contents of the will, lacked mental capacity or was unduly influenced by someone else who benefits under the will. Even if the will is valid or there is no will at all, certain categories of people may bring a claim against the estate on the basis that the will or law relating to intestacy does not make reasonable provision for them. The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act

1975 provides that an application can be made to the court to vary the terms of the will or the intestacy rules to ensure reasonable financial provision is made for such claimants. Potential claimants include children of the testator, a surviving spouse or civil partner, a former spouse or civil partner who remains unmarried, a cohabitee or someone who has been financially maintained by the deceased immediately prior to the deceased’s death. The court will consider a number of factors set out in the Act, including financial circumstances, before deciding whether to interfere with the wishes of the deceased or with the intestacy rules. Such a claim must be made within six months of the grant of probate or letters of administration. As ever, there is no substitute for good advice. If you think you may have a claim against a deceased person’s estate, speak to a solicitor to see whether or not such a claim may be possible. Most importantly, act quickly to ensure you do not fall foul of any time limits that might apply to your case. Wiseman Lee is located at 9-13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead – call 020 8215 1000

Liesonfilm Frederick Aiano from the Wanstead and Woodford Movie Makers invites you to a movie night next month, where you can witness a church ghost… and some filmmakers’ special effects

I

n the summer of 2009, the fashion house Ralph Lauren presented its latest collection to the public. One particular dress created a blogging storm. A photograph of a model wearing the dress had been manipulated and appeared to show the girl having a waist smaller than her head. Many of the outraged bloggers enthusiastically pointed out that the image was unnatural and could impact badly on young girls. Others were more concerned as to the integrity of the picture and photography in general. But, over the years, how many images created have been true representations? In the 1600s, portrait painters would have realised that true ‘warts and all’ pictures might not be helpful for their income. Photography in the 1800s was seen as the truth. But it was not long before fairies began to appear in carefully staged children’s photographs. The Victorians also had a curiosity about death and a number of somewhat macabre and potentially misleading photographs were created. With the arrival of moving pictures, true to life could be relied on! Entrepreneurial filmmakers would shoot local scenes featuring celebrities and their paying audiences would easily spot a fake. These movies were short-lived as the novelty wore off. So a search for ways to put drama onto the silver screen began. It was realised that special effects were essential to hold the audience. Viewed now, they may not be too convincing, but it was a more forgiving era where movies were concerned. In today’s movies, you would be hard pressed not to believe all that you see, thanks to the digital age, which often means special

effects can run throughout the movie. Some studios claim that half their budget is spent on creating special effects – studios know their audiences. Recently, some of these techniques have found their way to the enthusiastic amateur filmmaker. Limited in scope maybe, but in the right hands, they can be effective. There is a chance to see these techniques in play in The Ghost of Church Hall, which will feature in our club’s movie night next month. Without giving too much away, it appears that the club’s funds have been misappropriated and suspicion has fallen on the club treasurer. Unfortunately, the treasurer died a few weeks earlier. The survival of the club is reliant on finding these funds and members hit on the idea of bringing back the treasurer from the ‘other side’ for questioning. Does it work? Why not come and see for yourself? The Wanstead and Woodford Movie Makers’ movie night will take place in the meeting room at St Paul’s Church in Woodford Bridge on 4 November from 8pm (tickets: £6). 1404 ...and counting In January, the Wren Wildlife Group set out to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. With this figure achieved in June, the target is now 1,500. Tim Harris updates the count

Occasionally, on the move with them is something much, much rarer. And so it was on 9 September when Nick Croft found a bird he thought was a corn bunting. It was only later, when fellow Wren Group member Bob Vaughan managed to get some photos, that the bird’s true identity was revealed: London’s 30th-ever ortolan bunting, which breeds on the continent but not in the UK. Although plenty of people searched for this sparrow-sized bird the following morning, it had apparently flown off the previous night. On the same day, a friend of Tom Casey brought him a moth that had flown in through his bathroom window the previous evening. Tom gave me a call and I was able to help confirm its identity as an alchymist moth, another visitor from the continent and the first ever seen in London. Unfortunately, because the moth was caught – and later released – in Stoke Newington, it can’t be added to our total, but great to see nonetheless. Wanstead Park was the place to see dragonflies on the hot, sunny days of the

ate August and early September are usually one of the two most interesting periods for birds locally. This is because migrants are on the move, either flying over or stopping for a day or so in the rich habitats of Wanstead Flats and, to a lesser extent, Wanstead Park. A combination of plentiful berries and insects to eat and some thick cover to provide protection from predators means we can always expect to see whinchats, spotted flycatchers, wheatears, redstarts and warblers in the hawthorns, brambles and broom of the Flats. Few of these birds breed locally; they are travellers en route from northern England and Scandinavia to their winter domicile in Africa.

second week of September. Both ruddy and common darters patrolled Heronry Lake and the Shoulder of Mutton Pond. Other highlights have included the beetle Enedreytes hilaris, which Tony Allen found on Wanstead Flats on 11 September. The first UK record of this rather nondescript creature was discovered on the Flats by Tristan Bantock as recently as 2014. Meanwhile, Rose Stephens’ regular searches in Manor Park Cemetery produced another reward with an ivy bee (Colletes hederae), the latest solitary bee to emerge in the year, flying from early September to November. The dramatic spread across southern England of this pollinator since it was first discovered in 2001 is one more indicator of global warming. At the time of going to press, September’s finds brought the total score to 1,404 (+32*), made up of 433 plants (+9*), 779 invertebrates (+16*), 121 birds (+3*), 42 fungi (+4*) and 29 miscellaneous (+0*). *Change from August's count.

Spitalfields Nippers A presentation by The Gentle Author at Wanstead Library this month will explore a unique collection of photos by Horace Warner, who documented Spitalfields’ poorest residents in the early 1900s

H

orace Warner came to Spitalfields at the end of the 19th century as superintendent of the Sunday School at the Bedford Institute, one of nine Quaker missions in the East End of London. He worked in the family wallpaper business and was a photographer in his spare time. Warner befriended and photographed those living in the shadow of the Bishopsgate goods yard, some of the poorest people in London. In 1913 the Bedford Institute paid two pounds, 15 shillings and sixpence for about 20 photographs, for use in their fundraising activities. But Warner took many more pictures that he collected into two albums of photography that, after his death, passed from his wife, Florence, into the possession of his elder daughter, Gwen, and subsequently his grandson, Ian Warner McGilvray. For more than a century, these images were not seen by anyone outside his family. The collection includes images of news placards from June 1902 announcing the end of the second Boer war, giving the only precise date we have for any of these pictures. James McBarron, who grew up in Hoxton in the 1930s and, as a child, knew Celia Compton – one of Warner’s subjects – recalled what life was like at the time: “We used to go to Spitalfields Market and ask for ‘Any spunks?’ or ‘Spunky oranges and apples?’ and they’d chuck the fruit that was going bad to us.” This culture of foraging persisted until the wholesale fruit and vegetable market moved in 1991. Children swarm in the streets in these pictures – in such large families, with both parents working long hours, it fell upon

older children to take care of siblings and undertake household chores. They were left to devise their own entertainment, inventing games and pastimes by contriving swings and makeshift carts, drawing on walls and flagstones, playing dice and holding imaginary tea parties on the pavement. As a Quaker, Warner believed in social equality and that the divine was in everyone. He was disturbed by the suffering he encountered in the East End. At the time, one in five children in Spitalfields did not survive to adulthood, but our research reveals that among the poorest families, the mortality rate in the area was closer to a third. Shamefully, more than a century later, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, where these images were taken, has the highest level of child poverty in Britain. The Gentle Author’s illustrated lecture will take place on 21 October at Wanstead Library from 7pm to 9pm (tickets: £5). In the third of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to Molly Parsons-Gurr and Christopher Benham, who will be performing at the library this month

T

he raison d’être of Redbridge Music Society is to encourage local appreciation of the musical arts by providing live recitals at affordable prices and at accessible venues to the people of Redbridge and neighbouring areas. A key aim for the 2016–2017 season is to promote the musical development of up-andcoming, talented young musicians and this month, award-winning young cellist Molly Parsons-Gurr, accompanied by pianist Christopher Benham, will open our 68th season with a recital that will include Bach’s famous Third Suite for Solo Cello in C Major. Molly began her cello studies at the age of 13, completed her undergraduate course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and then gained a Master of Performance degree at the Royal College of Music, where she was the recipient of the Henry Wood Award. As a string quartet player, she has explored a vast amount of the chamber music repertoire and has taken part in many master classes working with renowned quartets, such as the Endellion and Chilingirian quartets and with internationally famous cellists, such as Natalie Clein and Nicolas Jones. Molly has performed at many diverse events and venues, both at home and abroad, and recently performed with Christopher Benham in a duo recital at the first International Festival of Music at Chateau des Jalesnes in France. Besides working as a freelance solo and orchestral cellist, Molly teaches privately in London and also with the Hertfordshire Music Service as an instrumental teacher, orchestral coach and conductor. During her career, Molly has been funded by a number of institutions, including the Denne Gilkes Memorial Fund and the Lynn Foundation.

Christopher Benham began his musical education as a chorister at Wymondham Abbey, Norfolk. He then went on to study piano and organ at the Colchester Institute School of Music, where he won prizes for solo and ensemble piano playing. After graduating, he joined the Institute’s staff as a piano accompanist. In 1996 he became organist and director of music at All Saints’ Church, Hertford, where he continued to develop the strong choral tradition and successfully managed the overhaul of its fine Willis organ. Chris is a trained teacher. He has held a number of teaching posts and is currently both a teacher of music and the chapel organist at St Edmund’s College, Ware, England’s oldest Catholic school. He performs regularly with a number of instrumentalists, singers and ensembles and has established regular lunchtime concerts in Hertford and Harlow. Molly and Christopher will perform at Wanstead Library on 25 October from 8pm (tickets available on the door; visitors: £10; Redbridge Music Society members: £7). Walking through time The Newham Striders is a walking group inextricably linked to Wanstead through its 93-year-old leader Stanley Silburn. In the second of a series of interviews, Jane Grell finds out about body snatchers

F

or the past 12 years, Stanley has led a walking group in Wanstead Park. Though in later life he moved to East Ham, he’s nonetheless an oral historian for this area, which is what makes him such a superb walk leader. Further to our last conversation, I notice that despite, or perhaps because of, your dyslexia, your home is a veritable library. It comes back to my need to know. At 14, I started work as a vehicle mechanic. I joined the Civil Defence Force at 16 and at 19 was called up to the army. I wondered about war and the causes of war. For answers, I turned to libraries and bookshops. So now, busy working and educating yourself, were there still forays into Wanstead Park and the forest? No. By then Granddad Woolcott had died. What with work, then the outbreak of war, life had completely changed. During the invasion of Sicily, a good pal who worked with me in the Service Corps had a fatal accident. The wife of his replacement was in the Army Territorial Service; her best friend eventually became my wife. When did you resume walking in the park? With our young family, my wife and I went for the occasional stroll on the Flats where we still knew many people. Early into our retirement, my wife was taken ill. I became her carer for 12 years. Her death, which came after 53 years of marriage, left me ample time to volunteer as a walk leader. When you returned to walking, what things caught your attention? A great many. Seventy years makes such a huge difference; I found myself catapulted into another world. For instance, the avenue of

trees that lined the drive to Wanstead House had become completely overgrown, but you could still see where the carriages used to trundle along up Overton Drive. St Mary’s Church always fascinated me. Something drew me to that place. In wandering round the churchyard, I found a night watchman’s hat, a monument to one of the guards employed by the church to protect the dead against body snatchers. So who would be buried in that crypt? Oh, the very wealthy whose families could afford the subscription. Can anyone visit the crypt today? Yes, but only once every seven years, when it’s opened for insurance purposes. I take it you’ve been down there? Only twice. Wandering to the bottom of the churchyard, you can see where Wanstead House once stood overlooking the basin – the Ornamental Pond fed by the Snaresbrook River, now flowing underground, near The Eagle pub. The Newham Striders meet on Saturdays at 9am near St Mary’s Church, Wanstead.

A

lthough we had met to talk about her and her book, Jane Miller was effusive in her praise for other Wanstead Angels: “I love the lady who does the gardening in Wanstead. And the one who sells the poppies. They’re my angels.” This says so much about her that I decided to tell Wanstead Village Directory readers about it, too. Jane was first turned on to music when her mother bought her a little 45 single of Oistrach playing the Bach Double and (on the B-side) Menuhin playing Air On The G String. She used to mime with it and pretend that she was playing the violin, so it’s no surprise that she became a musician and has worked with music since. Jane has always been a local. Now Wanstead-based, she was born in Ilford, went to Woodford County High and on to Trent Park College (now Middlesex), and now teaches music at the very same primary school she attended as a girl. “Redbridge Primary School is lovely. It hasn’t changed a bit, although it seems smaller. I can tell the students how it started and it’s still a wonderful, beautifully maintained school.” She went there direct from teacher training, having been offered the job by the then Redbridge music advisor. She met her friend and collaborator Nadia there and they’ve been great friends ever since. She and Nadia ran the mini-strings (stringed instruments) together; Jane conducted the junior strings and still coaches the First violins. They went on courses together at Easter and always worked on arty projects, particularly string festivals for the smaller students. In 1989 Jane lost her father to prostate cancer and then her brother-in-law to Alzheimer’s. The big surprise was the loss of her mother, who succumbed to bowel cancer less than six months after diagnosis. The book they are launching at Christ Church hall this month – entitled Mrs McNab’s Fantastical Hat – has a long genesis. In the time between Nadia’s heart attack in March 2014 and her triple bypass, she decided to finish the pictures and the two decided to look for an agent. Then Jane was diagnosed with cancer in October 2014. She explains: “Suddenly, it was glaringly obvious that

part of this book should raise funds for the hospitals that treated us. We wanted Stephen Jones (milliner to the Queen) to write the foreword, but were told he was very busy in New York. So we were thrilled when, on 14 February 2014, we got a message from him saying he would.” The book contains a wonderfully illustrated, lively poem about the adventures of a fantastic hat, suitable for young children. Jane (the book’s poet) explains: “The story comes from what you’re always told you should never do – use something you used yourself. I have a bit of a passion for hats and if I didn’t have a book, I would make up a story about a lady’s hat and its adventures. The heroine’s first name came from my husband’s lovely, Scottish Aunt Effie and Nadia came up with McNab and the story grew from there.” This is by no means the only thing Jane has done for others. Jane is hoping to take the school fiddle group to play at Liverpool Street Station to raise money in aid of Barts radiotherapy department, and after chatting with a lovely lady while doing radiotherapy herself, she dropped off a couple of music CDs for her on Christmas Day. They later bumped into each other in Boots and she’s getting on well. Other examples bubble up in conversation and are lost because I don’t write them down. Jane and Nadia’s book launch will take place at Christ Church hall, Wanstead Place on 30 October from 3pm to 5.30pm. If you are unable to attend and would like a copy of Mrs McNab’s Fantastical Hat, leave a message for Jane at The Larder. 150 not out! Tony Pluck MBE, with his wife Gill

Terry O’Connor

Jean Rumsey

Lynn and John Rising

To mark the 150th anniversary of Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club, former player and umpire Mike Mead has published a book charting the club's history. In the fifth of a series of extracts, Mike acknowledges some of those who have made a real impact to club life

A

cricket club is only as good as its members. Here, I acknowledge some of those who have made an impact on club life, both off and on the pitch. This article must start with Tony Pluck MBE (and indeed the Pluck family). Tony, who became a playing member shortly after the war on demobilisation from the RAF, served as honorary secretary for a quite amazing 46 years, quite properly being awarded the MBE for his work for recreational cricket. His devotion to the cause included membership of a variety of external committees, including the Club Cricket Conference. When he finally stood down from office, Tony accepted the title of Honorary Secretary Emeritus, which he retained until his death in December 2014. It is fair to say that the club would not be what it is today without Tony. An effective and combative middle-order batsman, Tony

ended his playing career with several years as a successful third XI captain. It was definitely a family concern. Tony’s wife Gill worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the club run smoothly and for many years, with Alan Russell’s widow Pat, organised the very popular Members’ Day. Elder son John played a full career in the club colours before he turned to umpiring the second and third XIs. Tony’s other son, Martin, took over his father’s mantle totally, captaining first, second and third XIs, and off the field moving effortlessly through a range of key administrative roles to become Chairman of the Club Management Committee. Jean Rumsey, who sadly died in 2014, was a ‘legend in her own lifetime’. From a cricketing family – brother Fred, who started at Wanstead, played county cricket with

October 2016 Terry O’Connor played most of his cricket south of the river and joined Wanstead via his friendship with John Gray when he moved into the area. Terry was “one of nature’s nice guys” and proof that you can be a successful businessman as well as a thoroughly decent human being. His company was the club’s sponsor for many years and he was personally a generous benefactor, leaving the club a substantial sum of money on his death. Like so many people, he is greatly missed. significant success and gained five Test Match caps in 1964 and 1965 – Jean joined Wanstead in 1963 as first XI scorer and continued in the role, virtually never missing a match, until the advent of all-day cricket. On standing down from first XI duty, Jean scored for around 10 years for the second XI. Although poor health marred her final years, she was involved with the junior section up to the September before she passed away. Jean was succeeded by Henry Chambers. Not only did he score for the rest of our half-century but he acted as a wise friend and match day administrator to a series of young captains. John Gray joined as a talented teenage all-rounder several years before the start of our halfcentury. He once described himself as a “frustrated professional” and he would have been a credit to the professional game had he been starting out today. In 1994 John became club president and has filled this role with style and generosity.

Chris Hurd’s record of service to the club is outstanding. He has been treasurer since 1984, a key member of the Management Committee, a past captain of the third XI and a regular attendee at games at Overton Drive. Len Enoch and Trevor Hebden have done wonderful work coordinating the junior coaching programme and the vast number of matches played by young cricketers. The hours they put in seem countless. Arfan Akram’s prowess as player and captain is well documented, but equally important has been the role his unfailing courtesy and genuine interest in people have played in enhancing the standing of younger members within the club. Lynn and John Rising have managed the club bar since the 1990s, with Lynn taking other roles as well, such as Social Committee and Child Protection. It’s fair to say the club wouldn’t be the same on a Friday or Saturday night without one of them behind the bar, keeping the beer flowing with a smile on their faces. And finally, to the “Guys by the Groundsman’s Hut”: Terry, Les, George and Pat, who support the club in fair weather and foul. May the sun always shine on them. Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club 18662016 by Mike Mead is available from the club, located on Overton Drive, Wanstead, E11 2LW (price: by donation). Out of Africa Poet, author and Aldersbrook resident Jane Grell will be taking part in Black History Month celebrations this month. Here, she explains why a shared understanding of African history is important

A

n 11-year-old girl came up to me in the playground one day: “There ain’t no jungle in Jamaica, is there, Miss?” It was Gloria; shy, with special needs. She looked at me pleadingly, eyes full of pain. As a teacher, the only black teacher in the school, I had to think quickly, tread carefully. Of course, there was jungle in Jamaica. Lush green, well-watered places abounding in rich flora and fauna. But the jungle about which Gloria had undoubtedly been teased was the jungle of books and films, where Africans were seen dancing naked round a fire with an Englishman about to be feasted on. The self-esteem of many black children like Gloria suffered because of those negative and pervasive stereotypes. Growing up in the Caribbean, there was no acknowledgement of being descended from Africa. We considered ourselves proud subjects of Her Majesty the Queen and the mother country. We learned of heroines such as Florence Nightingale, yet knew nothing of Mary Seacole, the Jamaican nurse who served in the same Crimean war. Thanks to some forward-thinking British politicians, however, perceptions in the UK began to change when resources were made available around the 1970s to teach black history in schools. It has never been truly integrated into the curriculum, but at least it’s now a topic familiar to schools, even where there are no black communities. Over the last 30 years, during Black History Month, writers, poets, storytellers and visual artists have been invited to share their knowledge and skills with others and this can only be a good thing. I retired early from teaching to become a storyteller in the African-Caribbean oral tradition. I use proverbs, riddles, songs, poetry

Mary Seacole

Brer Rabbit

and stories, which I enjoy sharing with diverse audiences in schools, libraries, teacher training establishments, community groups and homes for the elderly. As a child growing up in Dominica, I listened spellbound to stories by moonlight of the wily Brer Rabbit and his equally tricky alter ego, Anancy spider. In a bid to change his lowly status, Anancy spins a web up to the heavens and tries to buy a precious golden box of stories from Nyame, the god-of-all-things. He is given the stories after successfully performing three tasks. On Anancy’s return to earth, however, the box bursts open and the stories scatter to every corner of the globe. In my experience, Black History Month provides a vital space for such stories to be enjoyed by all, while fostering a shared understanding of African history and culture. It is my fervent hope that it will help future Glorias not to feel driven to distance themselves from the word ‘jungle’. Black History Month will be celebrated at libraries across Redbridge during October. Jane will be talking at Redbridge Central Library on 19 October from 2pm (free; booking required).
