Tuesday 10 October came and went. This wasn’t just any autumnal day; this was set to be M&S day, a day that would see passing shoppers and Marks & Spencer aficionados invited inside a highly anticipated new Wanstead food store, with promises of free glasses of fizz and treats galore. As it turned out, it was just any old autumnal day, with 157 High Street remaining sealed from public view – and not a champagne cork in sight. Needless to say, the grand opening had been postponed, and notification of this was provided after our presses had rolled. So, my apologies to those readers who – having accepted the invitation in our last issue – made what they believed would be their inaugural trip to the new shop.

Of course, the lag time between a publication’s deadline and its subsequent distribution is an inherent deficiency in the world of print. It is a deficiency the online world overcomes with ease – with a few keystrokes errors can be corrected as stories are read, and outdated news can be consigned to Google’s cache.

Not so in the physical world, where mistakes are left in black and white (or cyan, magenta, yellow and black) for all to see, for all time, and where obsolete information remains with the same prominence as the latest revelations.

I know what you’re thinking: this doesn’t sound like the best introduction from the editor of a monthly, printed village directory (if your thoughts are still with M&S, turn to page 7 for the latest out-of-date information on their Wanstead plans). But as anyone who can appreciate the qualities of paper over pixels, stage over screen or faces over FaceTime will understand, even despite the advantages of the digital world, some qualities remain superior in – and unique to – the analogue world. And besides, this is not just any village directory, this is the Wanstead Village Directory.

Westminster summit to discuss Wanstead Park’s Heritage Lottery Fund bid A summit to discuss the future of Wanstead Park will take place at the Houses of Parliament this month. Chaired

by John Cryer MP, the meeting on 22 November will aim to ensure there are no obstacles to next year’s planned Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid to secure a capital injection for the park.

“Good progress has been made in drawing up plans for the long-term strategic management of Wanstead Park… The original [HLF] timetable has already slipped, and we’d like to make sure any remaining stumbling blocks are resolved to ensure next year’s deadline

A message for local shops

The Wanstead Society is seeking support from the community to organise a switchon ceremony for Wanstead’s Christmas lights.

Councillor and community ensure local remembrance service continues

Marks & Spencer have been forced to delay the opening of their new food store in Wanstead. “Due to construction delays, our new Wanstead store will now be opening in early 2018. We’d like to thank the community for their patience… We’re working hard on the store and remain committed to bringing the very best of M&S to Wanstead,” said a spokesperson. At the time of writing, a late January launch is anticipated, but is subject to change. The shop – to be located at 157 High Street – had been due to open last month.

A local councillor has ensured a remembrance service will take place at the Wanstead War Memorial this month. Former members of the now-closed Woodford and Wanstead branch of The Legion have organised the event since the 1960s, but due to ill health, Councillor Colin Cronin and other members of the community have now taken charge.

The service on 12 November will commence at 12.30pm. A two-minute silence will also be observed at 11am on 11 November at the Snaresbrook Road Garden of Remembrance.

Local artist Susan Stokes will be exhibiting a selection of her handmade pottery items at Wanstead Library from 20 November to 3 December. “Each piece is unique, as I rarely use the wheel, preferring to construct from coils or sheets of clay. I hand finish using a combination of oxides, stains and glazes,” said Susan, who is a member of the Craft Potters Association and the London Potters.

Autumn artwork joins summer scene at Wanstead Station

Woodberry Wetlands was opened by Sir David Attenborough in 2016, having previously been known as Stoke Newington East Reservoir

A mural depicting an autumnal scene was painted at Wanstead Station last month by local artists Karen Humpage and Katherine Poluck. It joins an existing painting of a summer’s meadow, created by the same artists for September’s Art Trail Wanstead.

“This is part of our project to brighten up a completely nondescript corner of Wanstead Station,” said Marian Temple of the Wanstead Community Gardeners, who have positioned two street planters – to be planted with freeto-pick herbs – below the floral artworks.

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands joined Epping Forest representatives on a visit to Woodberry Wetlands in Stoke Newington last month. The group were met by David Mooney of the London Wildlife Trust, who outlined a number of ideas that could be relevant to Wanstead Park, including how reed beds had been successfully created in the wetlands and details of the various forms of fundraising they use. One outcome from the visit may be the establishment of a reed bed at the western end of Wanstead Park’s Heronry Pond.

Labour launches Wanstead Village team for May 2018 council elections

The Labour Party has selected Jo Blackman, Paul Donovan and Daniel Morgan-Thomas as its team to contest the new Wanstead Village ward in next year’s council elections. “We are hopeful we can win the three seats available in the newly reconstituted area. At present, the Conservatives narrowly hold the three Snaresbrook seats, while Labour holds two of the three seats in the Wanstead ward,” said a spokesperson. All three candidates have lived and worked locally for many years. Local elections will take place on 3 May 2018.

A dark, wartime tale: Wanstead resident publishes her first novel

Aimed at 14- to 26-year-olds, Redbridge Young Labour has been established by Alex Holmes, a university student from Ilford, and Liam Martin-Lane from Hainault. “Redbridge Young Labour’s launch comes at an important time for the party in Redbridge as we have ambitious targets for the local elections in May,” said Alex. Wanstead resident and journalist Chloë Mayer will be publishing her first novel this month.

“The Boy Made of Snow is a dark tale set in the shadow of war in a sleepy English village in 1944,” said Chloë, who returned home to Wanstead after a period working abroad in Tokyo and Los Angeles. The first short story Chloë ever wrote beat more than 8,000 others to win publication in an anthology. “I was so surprised and delighted I immediately began work on my novel.” The book will be available from 2 November. Redbridge Council to reinstate free garden waste collections

A tree-themed photography exhibition opens at the Temple in Wanstead Park this month.

“Members of the Wren Wildlife Group and the Friends of Wanstead Parklands have been out snapping, trying to capture not only the beautiful forms of trees in Wanstead Park and Epping Forest but also the details of leaves and seeds and the animals, birds and insects that depend on them,” said Gill James.

The exhibition launches on 26 November (from October to March, the Temple is open weekends only from 10am to 3pm).

Redbridge Council has agreed to reinstate a free garden waste collection service next year.

It follows this year’s trial of a paid-for service, which received a great deal of negative feedback from residents across the borough.

“We’ve reviewed the service as I promised earlier in the year, and after considering all the options we have decided a free fortnightly service would be the best way forward,” said Councillor Jas Athwal. The new service will run from March to November and will use the ‘old style’ collection bags.

A

s a regular at The Nightingale pub I, along with many, many others, were deeply saddened to hear that landlord Noel McMahon was unwell and had decided to close the pub at the end of September. He first opened the doors of The Nightingale as landlord in 1987, when I was still at Wanstead Church School!

So many people hoped this nightingale had not sung her last and that Noel would get well soon. Thankfully, the pub reopened in early October, and Noel continues his recovery.

Many, many people have fond memories of one of east London’s last traditional pubs, which has stood on the site, in its current form, since 1851. It’s no secret that traditional pubs are in decline all over the UK. But this little gem has been keeping locals watered for over 150 years and Noel, with his Irish roots, added a distinctive Celtic flavour to the venue, with Irish music every Wednesday night.

Noel put the pub and us locals at the heart of his business, winning Redbridge in Bloom on numerous occasions, running charity fundraisers and donating to local causes.

The Nightingale’s first known landlord was James Wyatt from Dorset, who had five children living over the pub, so the family theme has clearly run throughout its

history. When the old Georgian houses that surrounded Nightingale Square were knocked down in the 1960s, the pub was under threat of also being removed, but somehow survived. It is the only building from the Victorian era to remain in Nightingale Square and was granted Grade II listed status, which offers some protection. This pub has also survived two world wars, seen six monarchs, 23 prime ministers and has been at the heart of the community since it opened.

Neal and Mary Grace of Addison Road, regulars since the 1980s, said: “It was with a heavy heart that Mary and I heard about the closing of The Nightingale. A great deal of our courtship was carried out there. The final part of my stag night was held in The Nightingale back in 1993.”

There is, however, a future for The Nightingale, and we all wish Noel the very best of luck. However, this site could one day be a prime target for developers and that’s why I’d like to make it an Asset of Community Value (ACV).

It may seem premature to go for ACV status but this should be seen as a proactive response rather than a reactive one.

Aldersbrook Riding School are seeking disabled 11- to 25-year-olds who are currently ‘inactive’ to take part in subsidised horse riding courses.

School director Christine Sherret reports

T

here has been a riding for the disabled group based at Aldersbrook Riding School in Manor Park since the early 1970s. The group, now known as the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), focuses on using horses and ponies to provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment for people with both developmental and physical disabilities by providing horse riding and carriage driving lessons.

Aldersbrook and Wanstead RDA is part of a network of 500 volunteer groups that make up the national RDA, and we support horse riding lessons and hippotherapy (which literally means ‘treatment with the help of the horse’) in Redbridge and the surrounding area. Although we are a member group of the national charity, we receive no funding from them and each member group must carry out its own fundraising activities and seek its own volunteers. Our group raises funds by holding a number of events, including our annual Christmas fancy dress parade through Aldersbrook and by offering donkey rides at the annual donkey derby in Theydon Bois.

In 2011, following three years of research in obesity, exercise and physical health, the Department of Health published guidelines on how much physical activity people should be doing to achieve health benefits. Then, in 2015, Sport England carried out an extensive survey of various groups within the UK called the Active Sport Survey, which identified groups of people that generally failed to meet those guidelines. They found that only 17.2% of disabled people aged 16 and over played sport regularly, making them one of the largest inactive groups. On the basis of this information, we applied for and have been awarded a £3,840 Sportivate grant.

Sportivate is a £56m lottery-funded programme that gives youngsters who are not particularly sporty access to free or subsidised coaching in a range of sports.

In order to meet our commitment for this project, we are looking for participants between the ages of 11 and 25 who suffer from a disability and are currently inactive (defined as taking part in sport for less than 30 minutes a week, not including sport carried out at school). Those meeting the requirements are welcome to join us for a six-week subsidised course of hour-long horse riding lessons running until the end of December. Courses cost £10 a week, with the balance paid from the Sportivate grant. Unfortunately, due to the limited facilities at Aldersbrook Riding School, we can only take ambulant participants.

Jeremy Smith of local solicitors Wiseman Lee looks at some of the worrying statistics regarding the use of mobile phones while driving, and reminds us all of what the law does and doesn’t allow

M

ost of us are inseparable from our mobile phones – they wake us up in the mornings, help us get to where we want to go, entertain us on the way and allow us to keep in touch with friends and business wherever we are.

But with increased usage there has been a rise in the number of accidents as a result of using a phone while driving. The latest statistics show that fatal road traffic accidents involving mobile phones have increased by 29%.

According to findings published in the RAC’s Report on Motoring 2016, the number of people who admit to using a handheld mobile phone while driving has increased from 8% in 2014 to 31% in 2016. While it is tempting to have a look at a message or find out who is calling when you hear your phone buzz, you must remember the use of a handheld phone while driving is illegal, and has been since 2003.

If you use your mobile phone, your reaction time is 50% slower and you are four times more likely to be involved in a car crash.

Figures from the government website Think! suggest that: zz Drivers using a hands-free or handheld mobile phone are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards.

zz Your reaction times are two times slower if you text and drive than if you drink and drive, and this increases to three times slower if you use a handheld phone. zz Even careful drivers can be distracted by a call or text – and a split-second lapse in concentration could result in an accident.

It is illegal to use a handheld phone to follow a map, read a text or check social media while

driving. This applies even if you are stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. It is also illegal to use a handheld phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver.

You can only use a handheld phone if you are safely parked or need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop. Using hands-free (for navigation, for example) is not illegal. However, if this distracts you and affects your ability to drive safely, you can still be prosecuted.

If you’re caught using a handheld phone while driving, you will get six penalty points on your licence and a fine of £200. Points on your licence will result in higher insurance costs.

For newer drivers, if you get just six points in the first two years after passing your test, you will lose your licence.

The law includes an offence of “causing or permitting” a driver to use a handheld phone while driving. This can apply to employers, who will be guilty of an offence if they require or permit their staff who drive for work to use a handheld mobile phone while doing so.

T

hirty years ago, coaching was largely used to support the transition needed with talented yet cantankerous executives. Now, it is a prevalent and respected aspect of HR and management practices for supporting individuals.

Although the terms coaching and mentoring are used interchangeably, the two processes are very different. A mentor is usually a more experienced colleague; they use their knowledge to support their less experienced mentee. A mentor can be directive and provide specific advice. A coach, however, is dedicated to the coachee’s commitment to their goal. They are not directive, instead they assist, challenge and encourage their coachee to find their own solutions.

People have coaches to: zz Help recognise where they need to develop personally to improve work issues and to effectively reach personal or work goals.

zz Develop their effectiveness as a leader or line manager, increasing confidence, resilience and self-awareness. zz Work more effectively with others, developing empathy by being able to view things from different perspectives, and considering issues that may have been ignored or gone unidentified. zz Assist with the transition to additional accountability or responsibility, operating and communicating at different management levels.

In a coaching session, the coach facilitates the process through inquiry, using the ‘see and say’ process, allowing the coachee to consider

aspects for themselves whilst creating space for them to see the opportunities and guiding them into taking tangible steps towards them.

Coaching sessions should be fully confidential, with coachees actively listening, which includes tone, pitch, pace and words, as well as non-verbal responses. The coach will highlight anything that may be hindering the coachee from reaching their goals, perhaps self-limiting beliefs that may or may not be true. A coach will provide support in step changes that lead to fundamental shifts in attitude and behaviour. For example, a change from ‘reacting’ in any given situation to ‘directing’.

Remember, a coach does not need to be more experienced than you or ‘successful’ in your goal area. However, you do need to ensure you are comfortable being open and honest with them, so you can forge a deep trust level to work with them.

arlier this year, the Wanstead Society adopted the recycling site on Hermon Hill. This means we help Redbridge Council keep the area around the recycling bins clean and free from litter by reporting fly tipping and any illegal waste, as well as litter picking the general area.

Although our volunteers took this job as a way of helping to keep Wanstead clean, it has led to some mad, bad and dangerous examples of fly tipping and increased litter. So bad is the issue, not just here but across Wanstead, that we are reporting illegal fly tipping and increases in rubbish on a daily basis.

Fly tipping is illegal and destructive. Recently, on the playing fields at the end of Elmcroft Avenue, a huge amount of illegally dumped rubbish appeared, which left the landowner with a large clean-up bill and meant the field could not be used by local community groups.

To be fair, we cannot keep asking our council to pay to clean up the irresponsible behaviour of others. As a sitting magistrate, my view is the best way to combat this activity is through the courts and a successful prosecution.

However, the council needs to allocate the resources to properly investigate these incidents and bring as many cases as possible to court.

Where the council can help is by increasing its street cleaning activity. Again, if people didn’t drop litter we would all be better off, but we see so many instances when bins are full and haven’t been emptied for some time. The population is growing and we need people to support our local High Street. But the larger the population, the more litter it creates and this means greater cleansing resources, which requires more investment.

At the time of writing, we understand that the street cleaners, now rebranded as ‘street orderlies’, have had a change of rota, which means they work a four-day on, three-day off, 12-hour shift pattern. We wish the street orderlies good luck with their new rotas and hope it works for them, as well as the wider community.

Finally, a reminder that the Wanstead Society Clean Up Our Neighbourhood Team will be out again on 4 November for our bimonthly litter pick, starting on George Green from 9.30am. We hope you will be able to help, as this small group makes a big difference.

In the eighth of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to On That Note, who will be performing at Wanstead Library in early December

O

ne of the aims of the Redbridge Music Society is to bring highstandard, live musical events of varying genres, forms and styles to local east London venues at affordable prices, and performed within a social and congenial atmosphere. This December, London-based choir On That Note will perform a particularly diverse programme of festive items at Wanstead Library.

On That Note is a north London a cappella choir that performs highbrow, lowbrow and eyebrow-raisingly good versions of classical music, jazz and popular tunes at festivals and fiestas around the London area. It was formed in 2015 from Guildhall Professor Scott Stroman’s renowned multi-stylistic choir, Eclectic Voices.

On That Note is itself also eclectic; its 13 singers are from a wide range of professions and include a cabinetmaker, child psychotherapist and copyright lawyer. Some members are from formal musical backgrounds, having studied at institutions such as the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the University of Cambridge and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. All members are united in their deep love of communal singing.

Their repertoire is diverse, spans the music of seven centuries and is complemented by their own original arrangements. They meet each week under the guidance of the young, award-winning film composer, arranger, producer, jazz pianist and conductor Gabriel Chernick. Gabriel studied music at Cambridge and screen composition at the National Film and Television School. From an early age, he rapidly established a reputation for himself as a skilled and versatile composer, and in

August 2014, his soundtrack for David K Barnes’ adaptation of Games of Love and Chance was awarded a special commendation for original music at the Edinburgh Festival National Student Drama Festival Awards.

On That Note are now in great demand and they are currently working towards their first professional recording. At the Wanstead performance, the choir will be singing both classic and self-penned arrangements, including an original setting of I Saw Three Ships, an atmospheric spiritual song based on a less well-known Jungle Book tune.

Sprinkled into the mix will be a smattering of 16th-century humour, barbershop, pop, and contemporary classical and will also include some traditional carols. The evening will end with the music society’s annual party, with complimentary seasonal refreshments. In reality, most modern types of vehicle have only existed for little more than 100 years. In earlier years, horses were about the only source of motive power and vehicles had wooden wheels with an iron rim. This put considerable stress on the structure of the roads, and whatever we may think of the state of our local streets, those of previous centuries were much worse. The Highways Act 1555 had transferred responsibility for the maintenance of roads from central government, who had done very little, to the local parish, who had few resources to improve them. This process may sound familiar to anyone with experience of politics!

hen we think about the layout of roads, there is a tendency to presume that it has always been thus. Indeed, we also think of all roads as being very solid structures made of asphalt or concrete to take the load of heavy motor vehicles.

In the Epping Forest area, the population was small and ‘traffic’ from the west had to either cross the River Lea at Bow Bridge or use very basic ferries. The ‘main’ roads followed the valleys of the Rivers Lea and Roding, but even these were often impassable in the wet months of the year. The narrow wheels and the iron-shod horses cut up the roads there were, and even in the summer months they could often be heavily rutted and so uneven as to be barely passable.

What were shown on maps, even as recently as the late 19th century, were often merely tracks that were used by just pedestrians or horses, whether ridden or as pack animals. Those who can remember Epping Forest before the Conservators made the metalled horse rides in the 1980s will appreciate how even horses and walkers can cut up the ground in a way comparable to wheeled vehicles. In the southern areas of Epping Forest, such as around Leyton Flats and Gilbert’s Slade, the soils are generally more gravelly. This means they are more free draining but nonetheless cut up with heavy use.

The introduction of turnpike trusts and the developments in construction of better-quality roads by the likes of John Macadam did begin to signal a better way forward. However, these did not occur in our area until the 1830s and even then only on what we now consider to be major roads.

Some of my earliest memories from my childhood are of walking into the foyer of the shop. My attention immediately being ensnared by a large silver ring adorned with intricate entwined silver wire work in the style of fauna. I remember vividly stepping closer to the window and inspecting the ring with curiosity and wonder. I went inside and questioned my father, David, about his creation and I recall thinking my

My mother, Elaine, may not be a mounter as my father is, but she has a magnificent keen eye for design. I have witnessed countless times in which both my mother and father work harmoniously together through the design process to create bespoke items of jewellery, that can be found in the shop. She strives for perfection in all her designs and always maintains a high-quality of finish.

This month marks the 30th anniversary of Keating Jewellers. David and Elaine Keating – a young married couple in their early 20s – opened the High Street jewellers on the 17 November 1987.

Regardless of age, the couple already had an in-depth knowledge of the jewellery trade. They had both trained, worked and owned jewellery businesses in the heart of London’s jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden, and had a second retail business in Chadwell Heath.

Throughout the years the Wanstead shop has undergone various changes to the décor. The shop now sports a contemporary monochrome colour scheme, a vast difference from the original dark wood shop front, navy blue signage and carpeted floor.

A major change to Keating Jewellers is that you can now describe it as family-run business, as firstly the couple’s eldest daughter, Carly, worked at the shop, but sadly had to leave after deciding to move.

The departure of Carly meant there was a void in staff and Verity (the youngest daughter) started working there on Saturdays. Verity has now worked full time at Keating Jewellers for a decade and has most definitely followed in her parent’s footsteps as she is a designer-maker too. Verity’s designs can be found throughout the shop.

Reflecting on the years so far in Wanstead, David Keating said: “I remember opening shop, of course. I had worked solidly for three weeks doing all the necessary repairs, decorating and building the shop front all by myself, I only stopped to go home and sleep.”

“In 1987 we were one of the newest and youngest on the High Street with long-established businesses around us. I recall before Boots, it was called Lewis Marine and they sold boats! I mean does anyone remember that? Unfortunately, most of the shops that were here when we came have now all but gone, apart from J Jolliffe. It is sad to think, but change is a good thing, it has allowed for new businesses to shape the High Street.”

Keating Jewellers is now the second longest trading business on Wanstead High Street, after the sad closer of Judith’s in late August. The jewellers have remained a vital business for Wanstead as a customer will always receive a wealth of reliable, honest and genuine service. The shop also boasts individual, bespoke jewellery, as many items are designed and handcrafted by either David, Elaine or Verity as personal projects or as collaborative pieces all in the workshop on the premises.

David, Elaine and Verity would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Wanstead and the surrounding local areas for their custom over the past 30 years and hope for many more to come.

Behind the sMiles Dr Hanmeng Ma is a dentist at Improve Your Smile. Here she answers our questions about her work and hobbies, and explains how a single childhood experience shaped her career

r Hanmeng Ma loves food – cooking it and eating it – and in another life would have doubtless made a great food writer. But thankfully for her patients, she became a great dentist instead.

What first attracted you to dentistry?

At the age of eight in Beijing – where I lived until I was 11 – I fell over and broke a front tooth. My grandmother put the broken piece in milk and took me to a dental hospital where they managed to reattach it and eventually rebuild the tooth. I was impressed – and that piece of tooth, now covered with a porcelain veneer, is still in place! The experience of having a visibly broken tooth made me think about how important teeth are – it was essential to my confidence to have a full set of teeth.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love looking after patients’ teeth from a health perspective. But I also enjoy improving their smiles, so they leave the treatment room with better-looking teeth than they came in with. It’s very satisfying that someone coming to me with crooked front teeth may expect a transformation a few months later.

If you could give only one piece of advice to patients, what would it be?

Prevention is better than cure – don’t leave coming to us until it’s too late! The sooner you are seen, the less you will need to have done and the more pleasant it will be.

What career might have tempted you if you had not chosen to become a dentist?

I enjoy nature and would have liked to study volcanoes and extreme weather. I might also have chosen to be a food writer: I love food!

In the Chinese culture I grew up with, food is very important. In fact, when I think about

where to go on holiday, it’s not a case of ‘what will I see there?’, but ‘what will I eat there?’

What sort of thing do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Reading – I’m addicted to books. I read as much as I can in Chinese to keep my mother tongue going, but also to understand more about my culture. I like to read about geography and history, and historical fiction about Chinese emperors.

Is there a person you admire above all others?

Anyone who spends their whole life improving what they do, to be the best at it. On Instagram I follow calligraphers and painters – I am awed by their work.

What do you like most about the local area?

It’s a tight-knit community with a villagey atmosphere, where everyone seems to know everyone else. Most of my patients come on the recommendation of others already coming to me. I love being a family dentist here.

I

am a retired Harrods furniture salesman who has lived in Wanstead for over 30 years. I have a degree in Fine Art and Photography from Bath Academy of Art in Wiltshire and have, over the years, managed to keep my painting and photography going in my spare time. My garden shed and kitchen table have long been my studio.

Since September last year, my wife has been receiving treatment at St Bartholomew’s Hospital near St Paul’s. During recuperation days, having spent three days each week at the hospital, she rediscovered her love of knitting and I kept busy taking photographs. I chose scenes I felt were both interesting to look at and showed local landmarks that everyone would recognise. The image shown here is Wanstead Station, which is, of course, a hub of activity used by everyone. I turned these photographs into paintings.

My wife and I have always enjoyed doing jigsaws as a form of relaxation and we were inspired by a favourite of ours – of village houses in Southwold – to design one of our own. We then set out to turn my paintings into a puzzle. There have been lots of ups and downs in bringing the jigsaw project to fruition, but it has been great to have a positive goal to work towards and now we hope to donate any profits to the charity Bloodwise, which funds research into leukaemia, myeloma and other types of blood cancers. I can’t run marathons, swim lakes or climb mountains, but I can take photos and paint pictures!

An exhibition of Neil’s paintings will be on display at Wanstead Library until 11 November (original framed artwork is for sale at £55 per painting). For that purpose, the book reveals the universal laws and truths to our planet by shedding light on the ultimate secrets of existence, such as the creation of energy, matter, galaxies, living cells and the cosmic genetic engineering of the human race on Earth.

The book contains both knowledge and frequency (energy), thus helping the reader to understand universal secrets whilst habituating our physical, cellular body to

the energy of higher dimensions, preparing us for our spiritual evolution. It is a ‘living book’, as evidenced by aura pictures using polycontrast interference photography.

Cosmic technology unknown to us, called the light photon cyclone technique, loads time and dimensional energies onto letters in the book, which changes its aura on a daily basis since it captures and conveys to us the cosmic energy that showers the Earth. Street signs The streets of Wanstead and across Redbridge need more attention, says Steve Wilks and Scott Wilding as they take a look at the findings of the Redbridge Streets Commission in the second of two articles

Focus groups were asked about their views on the streets in Redbridge. While it is welcome that the council promotes listening and engaging with its residents, there were a number of shortcomings with the way this commission carried out its findings, and a close examination of the metrics paints a different perspective of the issues at hand.

It is important to look at how the findings were collated and the process of investigation followed. One thing that was inadequate was the scale of responses residents could give about their opinions of streets in the borough.

While a three-point grade (good, satisfactory and poor) is simple, it does not capture the challenging issues that a complex borough like Redbridge faces. These grades were also not defined with any significant assessment criteria to help respondents give the most objective answers possible. This opens up a degree of interpretation. One resident’s ‘poor’ might be another person’s ‘satisfactory’. A more scientific and objective survey with a scale of grades would have provided greater insight and provided focus on whether further resources are needed to improve a particular aspect of our streets.

The sampling of respondents was 400 and this could be argued to be too small a sample to draw any meaningful conclusions – Redbridge has some 280,000 residents (as at the 2011 census). There is also no analysis on how those 400 were dispersed across the borough, meaning it may not be wholly representative

he Redbridge Streets Commission was set up earlier this year, consisting of a panel of five non-party political commissioners. They were tasked to produce an independent report, which was published over the summer.

and may concentrate on a particular part of Redbridge. While the council cannot compel residents to respond to questionnaires, there is definitely scope to be more proactive and engage more people from different wards.

The council should explain the importance of their views, even if it means the data has to be collated over a longer time span. More haste, less speed!

On the findings, it seems to be the case that a very large minority of people are not content with the standard of street services the council is currently providing (some 44.2% stated that cleanliness of their neighbourhood is poor and almost 50% of respondents thought the council does a poor job of cleaning our streets). I would suspect this has since increased following changes in the green waste scheme introduced earlier this year (but after the commission was initiated).

As with Wanstead’s parking consultation, the council needs to think how it approaches these initiatives in order to secure the most accurate data response.

Good God, no God? This month’s meeting of the East London Humanists at Wanstead Library will present an introduction to Humanism, led by local members. Chair of the group Paul Kaufman reports

So, why do some of us identify ourselves in this way? A label doesn’t always sit comfortably with ideas of individuality. One reason, to paraphrase Humanist celebrity Stephen Fry, is simply to ‘nail our colours to the mast’ in the face of irrational attempts to push back progress.

Another is the opportunity it provides for meeting and engaging with other likeminded, open-minded people. Perhaps we take this for granted. However, some find themselves in a workplace where it is difficult to say you are not religious. Others brought up in religious families risk ostracism and the loss of their entire social network if they decide they no longer believe. For them, joining a group provides a haven of support and friendship.

Joining a group is also an effective way to press for change. Modern life involves increasingly complex issues, such as reproductive rights, a woman’s right to choose and the right for the terminally ill to decide how they die. Humanists campaign for reform based on evidence and compassion and the right to do as we wish, provided it doesn’t harm others. Likewise, in relation to issues such as equality, sexuality and gay marriage.

These are all areas where views derived from ancient scriptures have previously held sway.

Millions of Londoners now lead good and meaningful lives without having a faith. Most probably feel no need to label themselves. However, the chances are they are Humanists.

Humanism is not a set of dogmas. One way of describing it is as a philosophical framework. It helps to articulate views that most ethical, non-religious people hold, often without thinking about it. These include the importance of treating others as we would wish to be treated. This is a universal value Humanism shares with most religions.

Another is a strong belief that this is the one life we have and the importance of making the most of it. Humanists also believe that science, evidence and reason are the most reliable tools for understanding the world and our place in it.

The increasing number of Humanist funerals and other ceremonies reflects a growing interest and awareness. But many people still only have a vague idea of what Humanism is or its positive benefits. Hopefully, our meeting this month will help provide some answers.

Ahead of this month’s summit about the future of Wanstead Park, the City of London Corporation offers an overview of the park’s cascade of lakes and explains the issues surrounding the water level problems

T

he lake system in Wanstead Park was mostly constructed in the 1730s and 1740s from existing water features, while the Ornamental Water used to be the River Roding, which was re-routed to form the lake.

The way the lake system works has changed over time with water once being sourced from a system of weirs and later from the park owners’ right to temporarily dam the River Roding to top up the water or flush the lake out. The Basin and the southern chain of lakes, on the other hand, occupied a partly natural valley and were fed by groundwater supplemented by water channelled from the Leyton Flats area.

Years of changes in the landscape has meant the cascade system has been no stranger to water shortages. In particular, over the past 200 years, the cascade has seen the abandonment of no less than four lakes that were once part of the system. It has also seen the loss of the Holt Channel, which supplied water from the area around Leyton Flats, and the truncation of the Epping Ridge groundwater by the North Circular and the Central Line. Moreover, the cascade has had to

contend with damage from Edwardian sewer digging, enemy action during World War II and the loss of river abstraction rights following water shortages in the late 20th century.

The Heronry Pond is a concrete-lined lake that leaks and has to be filled by pumping water from a borehole that takes water from an underground aquifer. However, following a £35,000 investment, the borehole pump, which stopped pumping in November 2016, has now been replaced and is pumping 288,000 litres of water each day to restore water levels in this part of the cascade. Fish from Heronry Pond were moved to Perch Pond as the former began to dry out. Once levels return to normal, we can restock the Heronry with fish.

The Ornamental Water, which is at the end of the cascade, has suffered greatly reduced water levels due to an issue arising further upstream in the cascade system. Water from Heronry Pond passes through Perch Pond and then into the Ornamental Water. However, Perch Pond has been contaminated with floating pennywort, an invasive non-native plant species. This North American exotic, which is able to propagate itself from both

Praise for the Songs The BIG Sing Gospel Voices choir have a performance track record way beyond their amateur status. Ahead of a performance in Wanstead this month, local resident Liz Toher explains why she joined

T

he BIG Sing Gospel Voices choir were finalists in the BBC Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year in 2015 and have made it to the final again in 2017. We have sung with Leona Lewis, Blake and the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC), and performed for Jamie Oliver at his 40th birthday party. This month, we will be performing at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wanstead.

The choir was started by Jon Rattenbury, who previously sang with the LCGC and travelled the world with them. After leaving the LCGC, Jon wanted to start his own gospel choir and in 2012 found a room in Brixton under the railway arches in which to get started. Since then, the choir has gone from strength to strength and now rehearse weekly in Soho.

I joined the choir in that first year, a short time after my sister Kathy had joined, who met Jon at her workplace where he was coaching her office choir. Kathy suggested I should come along with her and we haven’t looked back since. It brings us great joy as well as wonderful friendships.

The gospel choir is made up of a wide cross-section of the community, crossing generations, nationalities and occupations including medicine, teaching, IT, retail and charity, as well as the arts, banking and more.

All with a love of singing and the commitment to work that bit harder. The choir is now part of a family of community choirs known as The BIG Sing, most of which are based throughout Essex, Kent and London. The BIG Sing was founded by Jon, his sister Gemma and his brother-in-law, Howard, all previous members of LCGC. Anyone can join one of these community choirs and one has just started in Walthamstow.

The BIG Sing are passionate about uniting communities with uplifting music, and having seen how their choirs have changed people’s lives first-hand wanted to capture what they have created and take it to those who can’t get to them. Gemma had the idea of setting up a charity that harnessed the power of singing, the camaraderie and the health and wellbeing benefits. The BIG Sing SOUL (Singing Outreach Unity Love) was born. The charity takes tutors into hospitals and schools and works with disabled groups to help those who could benefit from music the most.

Money raised at this month’s event in Wanstead will be shared between The BIG Sing SOUL project and Our Lady of Lourdes Church funds.

On guard online Steve Wilks, chairman of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhood Panel, looks at the growing threat from internet fraud and how we can protect ourselves by reporting the crimes

F

raud happens when somebody lies or deceives you in order to cause harm, usually by costing you money. Even if you have not lost money, you may still have experienced fraud. Unfortunately, fraud has been brought into the 21st century due to the rise of internet crime.

There are many forms of internet crime and new cases are being uncovered all the time.

The main types are: zz Phishing emails with links to fake websites to trick people into entering personal details or account information.

zz Criminals who attack your computer with a virus or spyware and try to steal your personal information. zz Online auction scams where sellers ask buyers to pay money directly to them.

It is estimated that fraud and internet crime costs the economy an estimated £73 billion each year. This money is often used to fund crimes, such as drug smuggling, terrorism and people trafficking.

The best way to disrupt criminals using the internet to commit crimes is for you to report them. Action Fraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime.

By reporting incidents of fraud or internet crime to Action Fraud, you are enabling the police and fraud authorities to build a profile of those committing the crimes.

Please note, Action Fraud cannot recover money for victims. Reports are passed onto the police for investigation and you may be contacted by the police if further investigation takes place. Action Fraud can provide referral

to Victim Support for confidential, emotional support and practical help. If debit or credit cards, online banking or cheques are involved in the fraud, your first step should be to contact your bank or credit card company.

If you have been a victim of fraud, you will receive a crime reference number when you report it, and your report will be transferred securely to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau for analysis and assessment. Anyone can become a victim of fraud. Action Fraud receives reports from people of all ages and from all parts of the country, including from those who thought it would “never happen to them”. There is no shame in being a victim, and the best thing you can do is report it to Action Fraud and help protect others from becoming victims as well.

Members of the public, businesses and charities can all report to Action Fraud online or over the phone. As Action Fraud takes reports on behalf of the police, reporting directly to them is likely to be quicker for you than visiting a local police station.
