Welcome...

Welcome indeed. Not that the sentiment has been lacking in sincerity in previous months, but simply my way of emphasising the greeting to each and every reader, of which there are now many more of you. The exact number of readers of a printed publication can, of course, only be estimated as any given copy could be read by any number of people.

The National Readership Survey estimates The Sun to have an average of 2.7 readers per copy, rising to 8.2 readers for each issue of Golf Monthly. Where on that scale you place the Wanstead Village Directory is something I will leave you to ponder. What is certain, however, is the number of copies this decade-old community magazine publishes and, as of this issue, that figure now stands at 6,000 every month (up 46%).

In some ways, I’d like to think that our readers-per-copy index is low, with each recipient holding onto their directory as a long-term reference as opposed to passing it on to others. But then again, what greater compliment is there to a magazine than knowing your readers recommend you to others? Taking a step back from the figures, it’s obvious that any publication – whether it be a right-leaning tabloid, a pastime-improving glossy or a community-driven resource – is only as good as its contributors.

The Sun has Jeremy Clarkson, Golf Monthly has Graeme McDowell and the Wanstead Village Directory has, quite simply, Wanstead (and Aldersbrook and Snaresbrook).

So, whether yours are the eyes of a new or ‘original’ reader, it is on the index page at the back – listing our commercial supporters – and on the contents page at the front – listing our editorial contributions – that you will see the reasons for our growth. Whether you allow any other eyes to see the Lee Marquis, Editor pages in between is up to you.

Wanstead High School PTA to benefit from Co-op Local Community Fund Co-op shoppers are urged to register their support for the Wanstead High School PTA, which has been chosen to benefit from the supermarket’s community fund.

“Shoppers can register their Co-op membership card and select us as their preferred charity,” said PTA member Lorraine Bucknall.

Every time a registered shopper buys Co-op branded products in the Wanstead branch until 18 March 2017, 1% of the spend will go to the school, which is aiming to raise £18,000 to modernise its library. “Our library is a key part of our school, where we

Local Pearly Queen Doreen Golding will be talking about her experiences at a heritage coffee morning at Wanstead Library this month. “Doreen will speak about being part of the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and her fundraising activities, for which she was granted Freeman of the City of London. Local remembrance services will take place this month at events organised by former members of the now-closed Woodford and Wanstead branch of The Legion. On 11 November, a two-minute silence will be observed in the Snaresbrook Road Garden of Remembrance at 11am. A service at the Wanstead War Memorial will take place from 12.30pm on 13 November. Copped Hall: the demise, the resurrection and the diverse wildlife

Biologist and photographer Peter Warne will be giving a talk about the wildlife of Copped Hall at Wanstead Golf Club this month. A trust was set up in 1993 to restore the house and gardens of this once-opulent mansion, which was destroyed by fire in 1917 and is now home to diverse flora and fauna. “Peter will share his stunning photography showing the story of this amazing place and its creatures,” said Gill James of the Wren Wildlife Group, which will host the free event on 7 November from 7.30pm. Planting in the dark: GoodGym and community gardeners join forces

Local Scout group celebrate 70th birthday with parade and cake

The Wanstead Community Gardeners and GoodGym – a group of runners who combine exercise with help for local projects – joined forces last month to revamp the flower beds in the road between The George pub car park and Wanstead Station. “We met by night… equipped with sacks of compost, watering cans, spades and forks as well as a good selection of hardy plants,” said community gardener Marian Temple, who would like to see other community projects benefit from GoodGym’s help as well. At a Wanstead Park Women’s Club meeting this month, Janet Seward will be examining the life of crime writer Dorothy L Sayers.

“Why did she insist on the ‘L’, who was the inspiration for Lord Peter [her detective creation] and why did she fall in love with Dante?

Redbridge Council has apologised for the late submission of their objection to the construction of a phone mast on Hermon Hill.

“The decision was issued two days late and the telecoms company therefore received automatic approval under central government’s generous permitted development rules,” said a spokesperson.

“We would like to offer an unreserved apology to local residents for any impact this error has had on them.”

Rock around the Christmas tree: switching on Wanstead’s lights

Conservation group prepare for Wanstead Park’s 2017 bluebell season

Switching on the Christmas lights in Wanstead is always a popular event

Wanstead Rock Choir, pupils from Wanstead Church School and the Salvation Army band will provide musical entertainment when Wanstead’s Christmas lights are switched on this month. Residents are invited to gather around the tree – which will be located on George Green opposite Wanstead Tube station – from 4pm on 25 November. The event has been organised by Redbridge Council and the Wanstead Business Partnership, which is keen to encourage more local shops to take part in its campaigns. Visit wavidi.co/shopwanstead

Last month, Wren Wildlife Group members began their annual work preparing Wanstead Park’s Chalet Wood for the forthcoming bluebell season. “During the first work session of the autumn, huge piles of brambles were removed from Chalet Wood to assist the bluebells in coming through in the spring.

Several small froglets were rehomed and a large animal skull was unearthed too,” said Gill James. Further work will take place on 3 and 24 November from 10am to 12.30pm (volunteers welcome). Call 020 8555 1358

ost of Wanstead’s casualties during the First World War were those who volunteered between 1914 and 1916, rather than conscripts after March 1916.

Roughly a quarter of the total casualties were officers, far more than the average, reflecting Wanstead’s professional and educated middle-class status.

Ahead of a talk for the Wanstead Historical Society about Redbridge in the First World War, Redbridge Museum Manager Gerard Greene gives some insight into 10 of the 198 names remembered on the Wanstead War Memorial

David Rivolta Private, Hampshire Regiment David was born in 1897 to Alphonse Rivolta and his wife, Mary. After the death of his mother in 1909, David and his younger sister, Mable, went to live with their Uncle Charles (a cycle manufacturer) and his family at 1 Rose Terrace, High Street Wanstead. David enlisted in the army on 14 December 1914 with the King’s Royal Rifles, although he was possibly transferred to the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. He was killed in France on 1 July 1916 on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Albert Sidney Escott Rifleman, King’s Royal Rifle Corps Albert was born in 1889 to Albert and Alice Escott. The eldest of four children, Albert and his family lived at 15 Voluntary Place, Wanstead. In 1911 Albert was still living at the family home and working as a photographer.

He was killed in action on 15 June 1917.

November 2016 William Benjamin Bolton Rifleman, King’s Royal Rifle Corps William was born in Edinburgh in 1887 and was the eldest of six siblings. In 1901 the Bolton family were living at 39 Addison Road, Wanstead. William enlisted with the 6th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifles, where he eventually became Lance Corporal. During his time at war, he must have fallen ill or sustained injuries as he was sent home to Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, Kent, where he eventually died on 7 February 1917.

Arthur Gordon Baxter Gunner, Machine Gun Corps (Motors) Arthur was born in 1895 to John and Clara Baxter. John was a fish merchant and the family lived comfortably at The Manor House on the High Street, Wanstead. The Baxters had 13 children. By 1911 Arthur was at Haileybury College boarding school in Hertfordshire. The rest of his family, including his oldest brother George, still lived at The Manor House. Arthur died on 10 October 1915 in the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Hugh Morton Corporal, London Regiment (London Scottish) Hugh was born in Bow in 1889. Hugh’s mother and father had moved to London from Scotland and by 1871 were running a draper’s shop in Mile End. The business prospered and after Hugh’s father died in 1906, his widow moved to a house called ‘Bransfield’ on Eagle Lane, Snaresbrook. In March 1915 the London Scottish was strengthening the Front Line. It was during his time here that Hugh was gravely injured. He died on 6 April 1915. (Research by Wanstead United Reformed Church).

Thomas William Oatway Company Sergeant Major, Coldstream Guards Thomas was born in 1879 to Thomas and Annie Oatway. He had two sisters and a brother.

The family lived at Tylney Road Cottages, George Lane, Wanstead. By 1891 12-year-old Thomas had left school and was working as a servant for Mr and Mrs Bowler of Grove Road, Wanstead. By the time the war broke out in 1914, Thomas was a Drill Sergeant. He was sent to France with the Coldstream Guards but was killed in action on 14 September 1914.

Henry Arnold Beaumont Private, Honourable Artillery Company Henry was born in 1897. In 1911 he lived at ‘Dunedin’, Cambridge Park, Wanstead. He was the youngest child of house painter William Beaumont and his wife, Emma. Henry had three brothers and one sister. He was sent to the Western Front on 14 January 1917 but was killed in action on 31 March 1917.

Thomas Henry Fentiman Private, East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) Thomas was born in Wanstead in 1896. In 1911 he was living at 33 Wellesley Road with his parents and siblings. His father, also called Thomas, was a coachman and he and his wife, Mary, had 11 children. Thomas was working as an ironmonger’s errand boy in 1911. He died fighting in the Middle East on 21 April 1916.

Samuel Westwood Benton Rifleman, London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) Samuel was born in Great Wakering, Essex, in 1886, one of seven children. Samuel and his brothers were all educated at Bancroft’s School in Woodford. In 1911 he was living at 33 Leicester Road, Wanstead. He was reported missing after fighting at Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Cyril Alic Page Private, East Surrey Regiment Cyril Page was born in 1899 and lived at 32 Gordon Road, Wanstead. Cyril was probably conscripted into the army in August 1917. He was killed in action in France on 1 September 1918, during the final bloody Allied offensive of the war. Cyril’s sister, Hilda, kept a collection of papers, objects and photographs relating to Cyril’s military experience. After her death, these were given to Redbridge Museum and they offer a powerful record of a family’s loss.

In the first of a series of articles about the history of Snaresbrook Football Club, Millicent Brown explains how the donation of Nutter Field to the people of Wanstead has enabled generations to play soccer

W

anstead’s picturesque Nutter Field in Nutter Lane is home to Snaresbrook Football Club, whose players are a familiar sight, battling it out in their traditional red and black shirts.

Very much loved by the community, Nutter Field was left to the people of Wanstead early last century and is now also used by Wanstead Cricket Club, Wanstead Central Bowls Club and the Drummond Lawn Tennis Club.

In later issues of the Wanstead Village Directory I will outline Snaresbrook’s brilliant first achievements, the fight for a club bar, the formation of a new youth team in 1998 and how loyalty and allegiance to the club never wanes.

One of the oldest roads in Wanstead, Nutter Lane was previously called George Lane – due to its closeness to The George pub – but was renamed after the deaths of the three Nutter sisters: Mary, Jesse and Gertrude. Daughters of a wealthy City cheese merchant, they lived opposite the field in a house named ‘Applegarth’, originally built around 1730.

In 1921 the sisters generously bequeathed the five-acre ground to the parishioners of Wanstead for their recreation and leisure, stipulating it was to be administered as a charitable trust by the rector and churchwardens of St Mary’s and Christ Church.

Originally called RAFARNO (Royal Air Force Army Royal Navy Officers), Snaresbrook FC was established in 1948 and, playing in red shirts and either black or white shorts, did excellently from the beginning. The side proved popular among local players, and so it began running both first team and reserve sides, appearing in local leagues. In 1963 it

changed its name to Snaresbrook – it couldn’t be called Wanstead as that was already used for football and cricket.

Former West Ham player and manager Alan Curbishley, who has strong links with Nutter Field going back decades, said: “It is a unique little sports ground and perhaps a dying breed… We are losing playing fields and sports grounds to a great degree at the moment and somewhere like Nutter Field caters for both youngsters and other age groups in Wanstead.” Midfielder Alan, who has himself played on Nutter Field in charity matches several times, added: “It is certainly a unique situation… people wouldn’t even know the ground was there if they weren’t told in the first place. It is simply a lovely sports ground.”

1416 ...and counting In January, the Wren Wildlife Group set out to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. With this figure achieved in June, the target is now 1,500. Tim Harris updates the count

I missed the most exciting day of autumn on Wanstead Flats because I was looking for migrants on Shetland. Jono Lethbridge was luckier, having departed from the Northern Isles a few days before me. He hit the ‘patch’ as soon as he was back on 8 October and scored big time. Jono can relate the story better than I can: “I passed through the SSSI [Site of Special Scientific Interest] scrub, turned left at the limes, then right towards the birches. Tsooo-wee-eeet! Eh? From the birches, there was a yellow-browed warbler calling. Calling repeatedly, in fact. The bird was calling its head off, literally nonstop.” This is a tiny leaf warbler that breeds no closer to us than the Urals of Russia and doubtless had been brought in on the persistent easterlies of the first week of October.

Incredibly, it was the second in a week in our area, the other being near Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The kaleidoscopic array of amazing fungi on show in Bush Wood and the City of London Cemetery last autumn included red, orange and yellow waxcaps, a golden pholiota growing halfway up a tree, a black earthtongue, white saddles, brown fairy bonnets, some apricot clubs and purple brittlegills. Who said fungi were dull? We hope for more of the same this year.

s the days shorten and temperatures fall, the potential for new additions to our list falls dramatically. New insect species are few and far between, and most of the wildflowers we are likely to record have already been noted. Likewise, the potential for new birds is slim, though more on that later. Two of our main options now are fungi and mosses – and with the help of experts Tricia Moxey and Ken Adams respectively, we hope to make headway with both those groups.

For Jono and a few other lucky locals, the morning continued in the same vein: three migrant ring ouzels got up out of the wood and flew in a big circle before dropping in again, then a skein of geese honked high in the sky. Not our usual Canadas or greylags. Oh, no, something much rarer: 15 white-fronted geese migrating to who knows where. Again, to quote Jono: “Grey geese [white-fronted geese are a type of grey goose] are not at all common in London, and more often a winter species at sites like Rainham. To have them here is fabulous.”

At the time of going to press, October’s finds brought the total score to 1,416 (+12*), made up of 433 plants (+0*), 785 invertebrates (+6*), 125 birds (+4*), 42 fungi (+0*) and 31 miscellaneous (+2*). *Change from September's count.

Walking through time The Newham Striders is a walking group inextricably linked to Wanstead through its 93-year-old leader Stanley Silburn. In the third of a series of interviews, Jane Grell finds out about local landmarks

F

Apart from the satisfying full English that we occasionally enjoy at the Bungalow Café after our Saturday walks, what interests you about this corner of Wanstead?

Well, it’s steeped in history. Spratt Hall would have stood between New Wanstead Road and Voluntary Place, near where the café now stands. Behind the hall would have been where the horses and carriages were housed.

I find the street name Voluntary Place rather intriguing. Can you shed any light on that?

Well, the area has always been connected to charity work. The local Quakers, among whom were the wealthy Barclays, Cadburys and Frys, were known for their philanthropy.

The present Friends House on Bush Road goes back to those Quakers. Turning left into Wanstead New Road are the Weavers’ Almshouses, set up by the Quakers for poor weavers. Nowadays, the almshouses serve as general social housing. There were also some workhouses at the top of the Green Man on High Road Leytonstone. When Granddad Woolcott died, Granny Woolcott couldn’t afford to pay the rent on their cottage from her five shillings a week pension. She was only spared the workhouse thanks to her many children, who took turns to care for her in their homes, each for a few weeks at a time.

Tell me about the stone that gave Leytonstone its name.

At the junction with Bush Road and Leyton Flats was an old Roman milestone, which

or the past 12 years, Stanley has led a walking group in Wanstead Park. Though in later life he moved to East Ham, he’s nonetheless an oral historian for this area, which is what makes him such a superb walk leader.

The High Stone at the junction of Hollybush Hill and New Wanstead

indicated the mileage to your destination, say to Harlow or Cambridge. There were markings at the foot of the stone that very few people would understand. They were sections of the first Ordnance Survey maps. Retracing your steps across the Flats you’ll get to Hollow Ponds. They were dug after World War One, partly to give employment to the men and for recreation. The ruins of a lido can still be found off Snaresbrook Road.

Tell me about the Birch Well nearby.

There was no piped water in those days. The better-off had their own pumped wells but others fetched water from the nearby gravel well, coming from a natural spring; free per bucket, but those who took larger amounts to sell door to door paid a few pence. The Birch Well also sourced the Eagle Pond. The present Snaresbrook Crown Court was once a hostel for orphans, built by the Lord of the Manor for children of his deceased shipping staff.

It later became a school. The neighbouring Eagle Pub used to be the last coach stop for travellers on their way into the City of London, six miles away.

sound of change Wanstead has been badly hit by London City Airport’s decision earlier this year to concentrate its flight paths, says John Stewart, chair of HACAN East, which is campaigning to end the practice

F

or 70% of the time – the days the west wind is blowing – all the departures from London City Airport (LCA) are concentrated in a narrow band taking planes over Leyton, Leytonstone, Wanstead and then eastwards towards Barkingside.

At certain times of the day, a plane can fly over just about every minute.

But there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. The airport has said that it might be prepared to look again at the concentrated flight paths. It told HACAN East that it “has not closed its mind” to reassessing the paths. This, though, is unlikely to happen until next year.

The government is expected to consult on a national framework for airspace changes later this year and City wants to wait until it sees the outcome of that first.

There can be little doubt that the pressure is beginning to tell on LCA. Complaints to the airport have risen noticeably over the last few months. At HACAN East, too, we get a large number of emails and phone calls each day asking what can be done. Of course, Wanstead and Leytonstone are also affected by aircraft heading for Heathrow. They are higher than the City planes but they are also larger and can cause significant disturbance.

Heathrow Airport – whether or not it gets a third runway – will be re-jigging its flight paths over the coming years. But it is adopting a very different approach to the one LCA used.

Respite – predictable areas of relief from the noise – will be central to its plans and it has commissioned a major study to assess what meaningful respite could look like.

However, the immediate concern for Wanstead is the London City flight paths.

There is a real chance that we can get the concentration reversed if the pressure is

kept up on the airport. If you haven’t done so already, please write to the airport and let your local councillors and MP know how you feel. You will find that they will be supportive.

John Cryer MP wants to see an end to concentration, as does Redbridge Council.

In July, LCA was given permission to expand.

It is important to stress that this did not lift the cap of 111,000 planes permitted to use the airport each year. It allowed the airport to build a new taxiway to cater for larger aircraft and an extended terminal for additional passengers. The airport claims these new planes, although bigger, will be quieter than the existing jets. But big worries will remain for people under the concentrated flight paths. The expansion works are likely to start next summer. They will take several years to complete and by then, we hope LCA will have thought again about its flight paths.

edbridge Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) in Wanstead and Snaresbrook goes from strength to strength. We reach out to circa 3,000 homes and link up with other local community organisations.

I, as the chairman of the Safer Neighbourhood Panel, along with my deputy Debs Selner, chair the panel meetings, which are held quarterly at Wanstead House. We are also the Neighbourhood Watch ward coordinators for Wanstead and Snaresbrook respectively. We are responsible for several Watch coordinators, who report back any developments and relay any news from the local police and authorities.

We hold meetings in liaison with the local PCSOs Alan Winston (Wanstead) and Harj Singh (Snaresbrook), local councillors and any other interested partners in the community.

Together, we discuss any local issues that have been brought to my attention and agree on a set of three ‘promises’ that the local PCSOs will focus on for the particular quarter. Recent ‘promises’ have been to patrol the High Street, move on travellers and reduce speeding on various key roads in Wanstead. NHW is invaluable as we are seen to be an important source of local information and part of the “eyes of the community”. If residents do not report a crime, however trivial, then the police do not know and cannot work out where they should focus their priorities.

All residents are welcome at our meetings.

Attendance is growing, but we are especially keen to reach out to all of our diverse communities that represent Wanstead and Snaresbrook. NHW is a ‘people’ organisation and while we like to make use of email and social media, face-to-face contact is very important. No computer screen can ever replace a person’s face.

So far, the NHW for the borough has had some success. Thanks to the observations of residents, some crimes have been foiled.

Indeed, there is an inverse correlation between a community that looks after itself and its crime levels. In short, crime will not flourish in a community that cares.

Redbridge is the only outer east London borough to have seen an overall drop in crime. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show crime levels dropping by 2.6% between 2015 and 2016.

Contrast this with other outer London boroughs, such as Havering and Waltham Forest, which showed increases of 10.23% and 4.86% respectively. It is noteworthy that their NHW schemes are not as advanced or developed as ours – Redbridge is seen as a good model for NHW. In particular, Wanstead and Snaresbrook wards are low crime wards, with the main focus being on burglaries and motor vehicle theft rather than crime about the person.

Whether it’s a ‘man cave’, ‘she shed’ or simple allotment hut, you have to keep them safe, says PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team

M

any items in your shed are of high value, for example, power tools, bicycles, alcohol and sports and leisure equipment. All of these have a very good secondhand value and can be easier to sell on than a mobile phone or laptop.

Do check your insurance cover to see if it covers your shed or garage. Also, bear in mind that criminals can use your tools and ladders to break into your home.

As with home security, it is important that you check your perimeter. Aim to have high side gates with additional trellises to give it extra height. Also, add trellis to your garden fences, or plant thorny or prickly plants to stop burglars getting easy access over them.

Security lighting, alarms and CCTV are all good deterrents, whether they are a standalone system for your shed or an extension of your home security. Make sure you check the equipment at least weekly to ensure everything is in working order, especially if you have a shed on an allotment.

Use bolts through the shed door and frame, and secure the bolts with strong anti-tamper screws, the same as those used on number plates to prevent them from being removed.

Shed windows need to have strong locks and, unlike your home, which you do not wish to appear like a prison, you can cover shed windows with a diamond mesh grille, and even consider screwing them shut from the inside if they never get used. Because aesthetics are less important on outbuildings, make your security a visual deterrent. There are locks on the market for every need.

Security does not make you more of a target.

If you have a garage with double doors it is best to secure them with at least two heavy-

duty hasps and staples, and use shackle padlocks so that they cannot be easily cut.

Moreover, an external floor-mounted T-bar is a good visual deterrent for car theft.

Mark your tools with your postcode and name using a permanent pen or engraving and highlight the serial numbers (do also note down the serial numbers). These methods make it harder for items to be sold on as it makes them traceable. Ladders can be used to gain access to an open window, so ensure they are locked away. Spades and other garden tools are often used to lever open windows and doors, so these should be chained together and secured to the ground.

Bicycles should also be chained together and secured to the ground (register the frame number on immobilise.com).

Last but not least, carry out an inventory of what is in your shed and make it a regular check so you can see if anything goes missing.

The Friends of Epping Forest organise walks throughout the year.

Mike Smith invites you to join them this month as they take in the sights of the southern forest, including Wanstead Flats and Park

O

ur November walk takes us to the south of Epping Forest, starting and finishing on Wanstead Flats.

Our walks provide an opportunity for fresh air and a little exercise, in the company of knowledgeable and interesting people.

Our route this month links the open spaces of Wanstead Flats, Wanstead Park and the River Roding. They were all part of a once much larger forest, the Forest of Essex, and survive thanks to the vision of local people, the Corporation of London and others in the late 19th century. The forest is now managed by the Corporation of London as conservators.

The five-mile walk is on flat ground and there should not be any difficult areas.

The Flats cover 334 acres, including some 150 football pitches. After each ice age, the ancient and much wider Thames carried meltwater over Wanstead Flats. The gravel layers covering much of the Flats were laid down at those times. Much later, drovers would drive cattle across the Flats to Smithfield Market and cattle still grazed on the Flats until 1996.

Moving north and west around the Flats, we will come to an avenue of trees. This avenue of limes, known as Evelyn’s Avenue, indicates one of the original approaches to Wanstead House.

Passing through Bush Wood, with its old oaks and sweet chestnuts, we will cross Blake Hall Road to enter the present-day Wanstead Park.

This land was incorporated into the forest in 1882. We will pause to look over the fence to the site of the former manor house. Clues of the estate still exist – you can find the gateposts at the north end of Overton Drive, some outbuildings, mounds, plantings and the Temple. The remainder was lost as debts

forced the sale of the house, contents, land and trees over a 10-year period up to 1824.

Passing through the park, we will then come to a little-used area by a former sewage works, which closed in 1978 and was formally added to the forest in 1994. It was also the site of an isolation hospital, which closed in 1936. Little remains of these buildings or the London Group Control Civil Defence Centre in Northumberland Avenue, which was demolished in 2000.

We will continue alongside the River Roding.

At the end of this path, we will turn east beside the railway and on beside Alexandra Lake, dug by the unemployed at the turn of the 20th century. We will then pass the remains of fencing around barrage balloon tethers used in the Second World War and back past the refurbished Model Yacht Pond (now Jubilee Pond) to where we started.

Perhaps the Golden Fleece pub will beckon.

The North East London Astronomical Society will be showing a selection of astronomical films – including one about Einstein’s theory of gravity – at Wanstead House this month

In Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, Newton had abandoned any notion of seeking the causes of gravity and instead sought to understand how gravity behaved. This he achieved in what is commonly accepted as the greatest scientific work ever published. Newton reduced the physical world to mathematical descriptions, which allowed natural philosophers – people we now call scientists – the ability to predict the behaviour of natural bodies under the influence of gravity. This was the culmination of the scientific revolution, which also laid a foundation upon which the Industrial Revolution was constructed.

Newton’s theory reigned supreme for over two centuries and it still remains the theory utilised in ordinary, everyday circumstances, enabling control over natural processes by working with nature rather than against it. However, in the early 20th century, a young patents clerk, Albert Einstein, working in Berne, Switzerland identified

serious shortcomings with Newton’s theory. He recognised that it contradicted another, equally important theory published by the Scottish physicist, James Clerk Maxwell in 1864 in his Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field and in 1873 in his Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism. Maxwell’s equations of the electromagnetic field revealed that light was an electromagnetic wave and that no bodies could exceed the velocity of light. Newton’s theory suggested that objects could travel faster than light.

Albert Einstein wrote that Maxwell’s equations of the electromagnetic field laid the foundations for his special theory of relativity.

If, according to Newton, you can move faster than light and Maxwell’s laws didn’t allow this, then the two most important physical theories were irreconcilable. Einstein was troubled.

How could these laws be reconciled? He only came to a solution after thinking about the problem for several years. No new laws of physics were required. The solution was exquisite in its simplicity.

Dr John Fisher helps to bring you up to speed on Einstein’s work, which was published in 1915 and is still the currently accepted description of gravitation in modern physics

Einstein’s one major assumption was a new conception of space and time.

His theory of special relativity revealed that all the laws of physics will remain the same when at rest and when in constant motion. This means that the speed of light will be the same when observed whilst stationary and when on a moving object. In Einstein’s theory, the velocity of light will always remain the same in all directions. He asserted that light propagates through space at a definite velocity, which is independent of the state of motion of the emitting body. A spaceship moving through space at 99% of the speed of light would still observe that the velocity of light remained the same in all directions.

The problem was solved by acknowledging that time is not absolute. Time is relative.

Newton’s universal clock is a sham. With the abandonment of absolute time came also the abandonment of absolute space. Einstein reduced time into a fourth dimension to be added to height, width and breadth. It is a consequence of the speed of light being a constant. Speed is defined as distance over

time. If the distance a light beam travels contracts, so too must time slow down to maintain the same ratio. Einstein now needed to develop his ideas into a general theory, which included acceleration.

Einstein recognised that the force felt when being accelerated was identical to the force felt in a gravitational field. The two forces are equivalent. He had also shown that an accelerating clock would slow down, and subsequently, a clock will slow in a gravitational field. We normally think of gravity as a force, but Einstein introduced a new way of thinking about gravity, not as a force but as a response to curvatures created by massive bodies in space-time.

Recently, a well-known physicist said that: “Space-time tells matter how to move, matter tells space-time how to curve.” Einstein’s general theory of relativity, his new theory of gravity, has passed every test placed on it for over a century.

A good send-off David Bowie’s death in January has effected change within the funeral world, says Sarah Tully, who explains why an unconventional send-off can be more personal than a traditional service

W

e all choose to remember people in different ways; a photo on a wall, a piece of music or a visit to a special place. As Remembrance Day approaches, we have a traditional two-minute silence to remember and honour the men and women who fought and died in the First World War and other conflicts. It has become the nation’s way of collectively marking this time.

Nationally, our funerals are quite traditional and often based upon the long-established fashion of wearing black and displaying flowers, with a ‘no expense spared’ attitude to show how much the person is loved and missed. However, as times and attitudes change, people are looking for different and more personal ways to be remembered. When David Bowie died earlier this year, the world expected an elaborate funeral to celebrate the life of this great artist. Instead, he wanted to “go without any fuss” and in doing so, brought awareness to an often overlooked alternative known as direct cremation.

Direct cremation is an unconventional option to a conventional funeral, where a simple cremation takes place with no mourners present. It involves transport of the body, a private committal at the crematorium without a minister and the return of the ashes in an urn. This frees up the family to have a remembrance service when and where they choose, without the usual time constraints and expenses involved. Instead of the allotted 30 minutes in an unfamiliar space, families are able to spend time creating a more personal and memorable way to say goodbye.

Originally designed as a cost-effective option for families on a tight budget, it is quickly losing its stigma and becoming a more acceptable choice for all kinds of people.

“We think that direct cremation will gradually become a more acceptable way for families to say goodbye,” says Hasina Zaman of Compassionate Funerals in Aldersbrook.

“As well as being more affordable for some, others are using it as a more practical and creative way of allowing them to put a special remembrance service in a place that really means something. We’ve helped plan events in a pub, someone’s garden and even on a boat. These are spaces where stories and memories can flow more easily and the person can really be remembered.”

We are regularly told that funerals are becoming more unaffordable, but if people were happier to shop around or plan ahead then they should find that there is a funeral available for every budget. Over 2,000 people used the option of direct cremation last year in the UK. As a trailblazing trendsetter, perhaps Bowie’s influence will begin a change within the funeral world and encourage more people to take up this option.

Countdown conundrum If you own a leasehold property, you need to be aware of the unexpired term left on your lease, says Debra Rose, a partner in the property department of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

A

lease gives you a property for a fixed period of time, often 99 years, though leases can be for any duration. As time passes and the term of the lease gets shorter, its value will decline. If there is plenty of time left the fall in value is barely noticeable, but once the term approaches 80 years the fall in value will affect you when you come to sell.

This is because legislation increases the sum payable to a landlord if the term has dropped below 80 years.

If your lease has around 85 years left, it is time to start considering what you can do to minimise the financial impact of extending.

The cost of extending the lease will depend on a number of variables, including the value of your property, your annual ground rent and the number of years remaining on the lease.

If you wish to extend your lease you should begin by making informal enquiries of the freeholder. If you are not able to agree on terms, you should instruct your solicitor to issue what is known as a Section 42 Notice.

This is the formal notice a leaseholder issues to their freeholder when claiming their legal right to a statutory lease extension. In order to serve a Section 42 Notice, you must have been registered as the legal owner at the Land Registry for at least two years.

The service of the Section 42 Notice renders a leaseholder liable for the freeholder’s reasonable costs, and also brings into effect a strict timetable by which the process must be completed. This is why we recommend you use a solicitor who specialises in what is formally known as Leasehold Enfranchisement.

The statutory terms extend the lease for an additional 90 years and also reduce the

ground rent to a peppercorn (zero) for the duration of the new lease. By serving a Section 42 Notice, the freeholder cannot dispute the terms of the lease extension other than the amount of the premium. Generally, the freeholder cannot reject a notice unless it is incorrectly served or contains incorrect or insufficient information. If a freeholder rejects the premiums offered in the notice, as they often do, then the premium is negotiated by the surveyors acting for the freeholder and leaseholder. If an agreement cannot be reached, then either party can refer the matter to the First Tier Property Tribunal (Residential).

Once terms have been agreed, a completely new lease is prepared by the solicitors. One copy is signed by you and the other is signed by the freeholder. Once you have paid the lease premium and the other costs mentioned above, your solicitor will register your new lease at the Land Registry. Please note: if your lease extension is non-statutory and you have a mortgage, your solicitor will need to obtain your lender’s consent and some lenders will charge a fee for supplying this consent.

e Petit Corner – on the left as you go down Leytonstone High Road coming from the Green Man Roundabout – hadn’t been going for long when I first met Toby and his business partner Rachel, and they were already looking for ways their new business could help the community.

We speculated about the possibility of selling tea made with home-grown mint for charity (I promised the mint, but my cuttings rooted way later than I expected, which put paid to that idea) and about getting the kids involved in making the garden themselves or giving them an edible ‘growing garden’ once it had been made safe (which might still happen next year). Then Toby and Rachel told me they hadn’t decided what charity the café would be supporting this Christmas and suggested that anyone local is welcome to pop in and suggest a charity explaining why.

Toby met Rachel through her husband, Sam, as they were both working for him at the time.

Toby said: “Sam took me on as an apprentice.

He taught me how to work the floor, to do the accounts, work back office and more. I worked for him for about five years and that’s where I met Rachel. She always wanted a café and had ideas about how to split it to give space to people with their children and people who want a quiet coffee or want to work. We combined her plans and mine and started looking for a property. Then Rachel found this place here.”

Although they had originally planned to open in Hackney, when Rachel found the property in Leytonstone they decided to open there instead. Rachel and her family live a short walk away in Wanstead, while Toby has lived in Leytonstone since he first moved to London eight years ago. They agreed it would be more rewarding to serve their local communities than trendy Hackney and have been steaming forward since.

Toby, who started in hospitality and catering after realising he wasn’t suited to the computing he was studying, built on his experience by working at demanding venues in Mallorca and Madrid before

visiting Colombia. This trip wasn’t for a conventional exploration, but so he could visit different schools, presenting different types of food and cooking in a campaign to encourage the local children to eat healthily.

He has stories of how he made faces on the food for younger children and how they asked for his autograph as he travelled around.

They are now tweaking the concept of the café, which has a quiet upstairs and a safe downstairs place where parents can bring their children to play. There’s a lovely children’s French lesson once a week, ample space for prams (Toby and Rachel want parents to feel welcome and uncramped) and they’ve also started opening late on Fridays and Saturdays. Evenings at Le Petit Corner provide a menu of Lebanese food. It sounds like it is of exceptional quality, since the same chef caters at Sam’s food stand in Harrods!

I’m not the only person to think that Toby and Rachel’s work in the café and with the community are noteworthy because they have recently been informed they were nominated for the Time Out awards. When Toby told me that finding out someone had nominated them was a good feeling, his face lit up, so I know that even though they are late to the Time Out voting table this year, it has left a very warm glow.

So if you have a spare few minutes, pop into Le Petit Corner. Sample their amusingly named Joe’s Green Balloon Coffee, the Café Bonbon (Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk) or their hot chocolate with coconut and marshmallow, have a chat with Toby and Rachel and let them know which charity you’d like them to support this Christmas and why.

Eric Beaumont is chairman of the Epping Forest Beekeepers’ Association, which runs an apiary in Wanstead. Ahead of a talk for the Wanstead Park Women’s Club, Eric offers a glimpse into a difficult hobby

T

he hobby of beekeeping has increased in popularity dramatically in the last 10 years. Why is this so? Many aspiring beekeepers believe the misconception that honey bees are in decline, respond positively and plan to keep a hive in the garden or on a rooftop. It can’t be that difficult, can it?

The fog surrounding the facts is understandable: since its arrival in the UK in 1992, the mite Varroa destructor has spread disease in the hive. Many beekeepers were slow to combat this threat effectively and colonies died. In parallel, the substantial loss of habitat – 98% of ancient hedgerows and wildlife meadows have gone since 1945 – compounded the struggle.

However, it is crucial to clarify that there are about 250 species of bee in the UK, some of which are now extinct or under threat, for the latter reason given above. The honey bee is only one of those species and media response to the beekeepers’ campaign for government funds to research the varroa mite and the decline of bees led to much misinterpretation.

In this context, it is useful to bear in mind that if each new member of the British Beekeepers’ Association owns one hive – membership has rocketed from about 8,000 to 25,000 in the last 10 years – it is clear that honey bee numbers have increased.

Is it an easy hobby? Not in the least. The truth is that the need for new skills and understanding are constant, whether a beekeeper has been active for 50 years or 50 days. Epping Forest Beekeepers’ Association is able to maintain a teaching apiary in Wanstead due to the generous offer of the use of land by a local resident, and each spring we

break the awkward news to 30 beginners that it is a labour-intensive and complex hobby, that maintaining an apiary, understanding the hive mind and managing healthy colonies and swarming will keep any beekeeper in rewarding work for six months of the year.

The benefits are sensational: the door to the seasonal cycle is opened, contrasting sharply with our prevailing pressurised and hectic world, and enabling intimacy with a wild and engaging livestock. Honey? The intention of the honey bee is to acquire as much as possible, often far in excess of its winter needs.

If the beekeeper is successful, the honey bee will thrive, and vice versa. The taking of a sweet autumnal surplus is just one of the rewards of a beekeeper.

n the immediate post-war years, the August Cricket Week at Wanstead was a prominent feature of the season. With foreign travel a rarity and even holidays within the UK inhibited by petrol rationing, the “Week” gave players and spectators a very welcome break from everyday life.

Another feature of Cricket Week was the chance it gave players from the lower tier of the club to play at Overton Drive and mix with members of the first XI. With changing patterns of life and of leisure, the “Week” gradually faded from the scene. In 1966, our centenary year, it was decided the time had come to revive Cricket Week, initially as a oneoff, but the venture proved so popular that it was repeated in 1967 and for every year since.

As with so many aspects of club cricket, Cricket Week suffered somewhat as the League and National Cup competitions began to dominate the interest of players. A revival came at the start of the 1990s when the annual President’s XI match was moved to Cricket Week from its previous slot in September.

Generously hosted by John Gray, this match brings back many past players to Overton Drive every year. Fine weather in Cricket Week, plus the evening social events, means a welcome boost to club finances.

In the late 1940s and into the 1950s the club toured the South Coast every June, mainly in the Sussex and West Kent areas, and this was a very popular event. Again, leisure patterns changed and the tour faded,

November 2016 although one or two fixtures remained. A Sunday fixture against Rye was introduced.

In 1964 a group of enthusiasts decided the time had come to reinstate the tour as a full “week away” and quite a formidable fixture list was assembled – Rye, Sevenoaks Vine, Broadwater (Worthing), Folkestone, Hastings and Gravesend. The touring party set off with some trepidation as they were mainly drawn from the lower XIs, although one or two first XI players did come down for a day to reinforce the side as the week progressed.

Blessed throughout with fine weather, the tour was an immense success – not just socially (although that was important) but in terms of player development. Competing every day for a week on excellent grounds against high-quality opposition enabled the tourists to reach a standard they had probably never previously believed possible. The author still feels that he really “grew up” as a player in that unforgettable week in 1964.

In February 2013 the club went on a tour to Jamaica. The most unforgettable game of the tour was played against the inmates of Tower State Prison, Kingston (pictured).

The Jamaican cricket legend Courtney Walsh personally helped organise the tour to support his foundation, which promotes cricket as a means of self-development among disadvantaged young people. He said: “I have visited Wanstead a few times and have had first-hand experience of the amazing work the club does in the community. You have touched so many hearts of those less privileged in Jamaica and these young people will never forget the visit.”

Further successful tours followed and the author enjoyed 1965 and 1966 before a change of employment meant he was restricted to the Sunday game at Rye only. The tour continued on a steadily reducing scale for several more years, but after a gap, the club toured again, this time to the West Country. Wanstead player Mark Ball did much to galvanise interest and former club stalwart Norman Malyon, then living in Devon, acted as a local contact. This tour ran for several years and helped club bonding.

In 1969 the club, for the first time, toured overseas, having an unforgettable week in Holland. The seed was planted the year before when Dutch side Roet en Wit (Red and White CC) played a midweek match at Overton Drive. Sadly, this game contained an unfortunate incident when a young Dutch player suffered a bad eye injury whilst fielding, but the clubs bonded remarkably well and John Banner of Wanstead took on the task of organising a full tour in July 1969.

We were based near Haarlem in Aerdenhoute, accommodated in the homes of Roet en Wit members, and quite simply had an unforgettable week on and off the field.

Questions to answer Ahead of a book launch and discussion in Wanstead this month, Victoria Baskerville from Redbridge Against Academisation explains why she believes government education policy is not fit for purpose

S

tanding up for Education is a text of our time, which has evolved, from many years of deep concern and growing crisis in education, written by a cross section of educationalists, including teachers, politicians and students. The title is the intention of the book, aiming to fuel campaigns and inspire teachers and parents alike to make a stand for education.

Parents, teachers, head teachers, support workers and community members are increasingly disturbed by the current state of education. In fact, there are so many issues, it’s hard to know which is the most worrying: academisation, which is privatisation through the back door; grammar schools, which mean segregation rather than inclusion; not to mention factory-testing regimes, overwhelmed teachers and children, underfunding, teacher shortages, large class sizes, long working hours and cuts to funding, to name a few.

As a parent, I am very concerned. Teachers’ working conditions increasingly become our children’s learning conditions. This is why parents and teachers are coming together to make a stand for education. Locally and across the country, parent-led campaign groups are emerging. These groups are serving to spread information on education issues and pressure groups are influencing policy change.

Redbridge Against Academisation (RAA) is a good example, a local campaign group made up of parents, teachers, head teachers, governors, NUT and NAHT members and community supporters. RAA sees its role as galvanising all stakeholders into action, informing all interested parties of the real

Redbridge councillors stand alongside parents and teachers in opposing forced academisation

issues, influencing policy change and building teacher confidence. RAA to date has hosted public information meetings and community events and has been successfully supported

by Redbridge Council, unanimously voting against forced academisation in the borough.

Parent and teacher campaign groups are coming together with teaching unions and political groups to challenge current policy.

They are like beacons across the country, shining a light to stand up for education.

Groups use social media to join forces, to come together in solidarity, a force that is gaining momentum, power and influence.

There is a changing wave in education and important questions are being raised.

What is education for? Who should control education? How should educational progress be measured? How much testing is too much testing? This book launch brings a real opportunity to debate and tease out these important answers.
