Welcome... An art teacher once asked my A level art class what the purpose of frames were. Aside from secondary functions of protection and usability, the primary purpose of a frame is, of course, to complement and enhance the image it surrounds. Like a newborn baby clothed for the first time, the beauty emanates from that contained within. The frames and borders that surround our family portraits and art gallery displays are a very literal example of how we like to beautify our boundaries, but the concept exists on many levels. The hand-painted door number sign; the personalised phone case; the colour of our passport cover; these are all things that delineate a boundary of sorts, with the ‘main attraction’ equally functionable without such aesthetic considerations. Boundaries, it would seem, are things we like to like. Boundaries in a geographical sense are no different. We use them to define our nations, our allegiances and our governing bodies. We like them because of the clarity they provide to our identities. We decorate them with flags, with sporting mascots and cultural icons. And on a local level, they define our communities and our councils. As a local magazine, we thrive on the beauty that exists within our own community’s boundaries. We take pleasure in championing all that is good within those boundaries, which are all the more prominent in this, a local election month. And if you will indulge me one final stroke of the art analogy brush, I’ll sign off by saying we are proud to be the frame to the masterpiece that is Wanstead (Village and Park). Lee Marquis, Editor

Brother and sister team to bring back Music in Wanstead Park festival A brother and sister team are organising a return of the Music in Wanstead Park festival. Started by the Aldersbrook Family Association in the early 2000s, the popular annual event continued until 2016. Now, with the original organiser’s blessing, local residents Calum and Caitlin Downie are bringing the party back to the park. “The event has always been about bringing the community closer together and this year is no exception. There will be wonderful local musicians, craft stalls, food and drink and family entertainment,” said Calum. Cabaret performer Tricity Vogue will

Women’s 10km Sparkle Walk

Redbridge school choice results

Women are invited to join a sponsored walk in aid of Haven House Children’s Hospice this month. “Whether you want to remember someone special, have a great night out with friends, celebrate our 15th birthday or get in the spirit for the royal wedding, everyone is welcome to walk,” said a spokesperson. The 10km Sparkle Walk will begin at 7pm on 18 May in Woodford Green and finish at The Cuckfield, Wanstead. Visit wavidi.co/sprkl

Over 88% of children got into their first choice of primary school in Redbridge this year – the highest in the borough’s history and above the London average of 86.5%. The data was released on national primary school offer day (16 April) by the Pan-London Admissions Board. Almost 97% received one of their top three school choices, while just 72 children out of the 3,698 applications were not offered one of their preferences.

Local artist to display Billy the Kid artwork at Wanstead Library

Visitors to Wanstead Park have been enjoying the annual display of bluebells. “The bluebells have been late this year, due to the long winter, and were at their best towards the end of April,” said Richard Arnopp of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, which hosted a guided spring walk last month that was enjoyed by over 30 people. Volunteers also organised a nature club for children in the park, which is considered to be one of the best springtime places to see native UK bluebells in the London and Essex areas.

Wanstead resident and artist Chris Thomas will be displaying his drawings of American Old West gunfighter Billy the Kid at Wanstead Library this month. “Billy the Kid was a handsome, buck-toothed youth and popular dance partner with Mexican girls. On the other hand, he was a thief and ruthless killer of perhaps 21 men,” said Chris, author of Not Countin’ Mexicans, the Authentic Life of Billy the Kid. The exhibition will also feature images of Sheriff Pat Garrett, who shot and killed Billy the Kid on 14 July 1881.

Red house box ambassadors needed in Wanstead

Local filmmakers invited to take part in Hitchcock event

Haven House Children’s Hospice is looking for red house box ambassadors in the Wanstead area. “Red houses are our charity collection boxes… This role involves volunteers managing an area or a high street and keeping a check on the existing boxes and replacing them when required… Once collected and replaced the box should be dropped back to the hospice. The role is very flexible and is based within your local area,” said a spokesperson for the Woodford Green charity. Call 020 8498 5853

Organisers of Hitchcock’s Home – an annual celebration of Alfred Hitchcock in his home town of Leytonstone – are inviting filmmakers in Wanstead to be part of this year’s event. “Hitchcock’s Home is also about celebrating local creative talent and we’re calling out for film shorts to show… So, if you’re a local filmmaker, have produced something on a local theme, anything ‘Hitch-esque’ or on the theme of ‘leading ladies’, we’d love to hear from you,” said Jeanne Holland. Deadline for entries is 20 May. Visit hitchcockshome.co.uk

Liz’s show combines ‘tales and truths collected over the years from life’s finishing line’

A one-woman show that explores issues surrounding death will be performed at Wanstead Library this month. “Outside the Box asks its audience to embrace mortality and look on the bright side of life, with a weave of untold and surprising stories, a hint of history and some pithy commentary on the funeral industry,” said a library spokesperson. Written and performed by Liz Rothschild – an awardwinning burial ground owner – the show will take place on 11 May from 7.30pm (free; booking required). Visit wavidi.co/otb

See the bark from the trees: local photographer exhibits work

A community-wide jumble trail will take place in Aldersbrook this month. “The jumble trail really brings the best out in people and is a great event for our community. The charities that we will be donating to this year are Haven House Children’s Hospice and Reach4Humanity, a charity started by a former Aldersbrook Primary School pupil,” said Amina Malik-Lewis, who sold onion bhajis during previous trails and has organised this year’s event, which takes place on 12 May from 11am to 3pm. Local police officers will hold five contact points at Wanstead venues this month. The weekly events provide an opportunity for the public to meet their Safer Neighbourhoods Team and report crimes. Sessions are scheduled to take place at Costa Coffee on the High Street on 3 May (1pm–2pm), at Wanstead Library on 8 May (3pm–4pm), at Costa Coffee on 16 May (1pm–2pm), at Wanstead Library again on 23 May (1pm–2pm) and returning to Costa Coffee on 31 May (2pm–3pm). Cyclists held a meeting at Wanstead House last month to discuss how Redbridge can be part of the Liveable Neighbourhoods programme. “The Mayor of London is offering £10m to all boroughs that come up with a scheme to make one neighbourhood in their borough more pleasant to live in,” explained Gill James. Ideas put forward included prompt road repairs and redesigning the Ilford gyratory system. The London Cycling Campaign is supporting groups keen to take action in their borough. I

was born in Wanstead. My parents first lived in a room on the first floor of a house beyond Christchurch Green. My uncle had secured the property for us, my grandmother and himself. After a few years, like many East End families in the 1950s, we moved to the newly developed frontiers of Essex. But my attachment to Wanstead remained. The Green Line sped me back for visits with my extended family who remained here. After several moves, I am a Wanstead resident once more. My interest in photography began with my grandfather, who went everywhere with his camera hung around his neck. I experimented with Instamatics, then 35mm cameras. The results were rarely worth the wait that processing took in those days. The advent of digital and smartphone cameras reawakened my interest and enthusiasm for photography, and like my grandfather, I now rarely leave my house without my camera. I leave my home through the front door. I pass hundreds of doors during the span of a day. Doors are like leaves. You see them everywhere but rarely pause to really look at them. When you do, they are transformed into something more complex and magical. Some are unusual in their colour, shape and form. Others, less so, but each serves an important function. Open doors lay bare the threshold into private spaces. When closed, they bar intruders. Doors hold a special place in our histories, literature and mythology. Walk around Wanstead and you can find old doors with ornate stonework frames. Perhaps they were once the front doors of stately manor houses. Another door might be found in the nook of a stone building in a green field. A third might be hidden in the shade of an old tree beyond the moss-blanketed gravestones of former residents of Wanstead. These are Wanstead’s hidden doorways. For doorway location answers, visit wavidi.co/maydoors. To view more of Stephen’s images, visit wavidi.co/slines

KNOWIN G ME In the first of a series of articles by members of the East London ME Group, Ian Purser explains what it’s like to live with an illness many believe is not real and why group support is so important

I

t was 1986, and after a degree course, I returned to stay at my parents’ house in Wanstead before going on to do an MA. I’d put up some shelves to hold the books I’d accumulated, and feeling tired after that, flopped into an armchair. When I tried to get up again, I was utterly without the strength to do so. I was shortly able to get up and collapse into bed, and the next morning had improved, but still felt thoroughly drained of energy and strength. At the doctor’s, tests were all negative; the only advice was to rest and wait for recovery (I’m still waiting). My body was on half-power: functioning, but only as long as I did nothing requiring exertion, strength or stamina – otherwise, fatigue would set in and muscles would ache painfully, with a stroll having the after-effect on my legs of a long hike. I deferred my MA for a year, then for another year, then gave up on it. In the meantime, I’d found a name for my condition: myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), which is also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). I contacted the ME Association and got the phone number of the East London ME Group, which had just started meeting at Wanstead Library. I went along, have been going ever since, and am now one of the organisers. It’s impossible to overestimate the importance a support group can have for ME sufferers. The nature of symptoms and lack of a diagnostic test cause scepticism from some in the medical profession, the media (remember ‘yuppie flu’?) and the public. Though the World Health Organization classifies it as neurological, the NHS continues to see it as psychological in nature. Obtaining ill-health benefits can be scandalously difficult, and

ME sufferers have to battle all this as well as their illness – which makes meeting up with others going through the same struggles an important source of support. I’m lucky – my ME has been stable and at a level enabling me to work part-time, but others have it much worse – some bed-bound, some suffering drastic relapses and some living in semi-darkness due to extreme light sensitivity. ME can devastate lives and families, and it’s rewarding to help through group meetings and also information (I’ve made up an information pack for anyone interested). Currently, the group meets every five to six weeks at Wanstead House, kept going by members’ donations and Waitrose’s green token scheme. We would love to offer more, such as a newsletter and monthly meetings, but our limited finances (and energies!) mean those are future hopes. But then hope – for more research, better treatment, even a cure – is what everyone with ME lives with. The next meeting of the East London ME Group will take place at Wanstead House on 9 June from 2.30pm to 5pm. For more information, call 07957 152 566 or email ianpurser81@gmail.com

The Engelskirchen Link Fr Richard Wyber of Wanstead Parish talks about Wanstead’s ties with the German town of Engelskirchen and why he believes such international friendships are now more important than ever

O

These annual visits are the main expression of a friendship, which originated over 25 years ago, between Engelskirchen and Wanstead United Reformed Church. Subsequently, Wanstead Parish (St Mary’s with Christ Church) was invited to join. The visits alternate: last year, a group from Wanstead travelled to Engelskirchen, where they stayed with local church members. The purpose of the visits is to enjoy each other’s company and thereby get to know a church community in another European country. Our visitors arrived at Stansted Airport early on Wednesday 4 April and flew out on the evening of Sunday 11 April. In between, they were offered a varied programme of activities, as well as spending time in their hosts’ homes. An early highlight was attendance at choral Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral, sung as it happened by a guest choir from Belgium. Friday, a rare fine day, was spent around Hampstead Heath, beginning with a visit to Kenwood House, which offers beautiful views over London and an exceptional collection of paintings. For younger visitors, there was a well-resourced dressing-up area. From Kenwood, we moved on to an ancient (1585) Hampstead pub, The Spaniard’s Inn, which we discovered to be under the same management or ownership as Wanstead’s Cuckfield. The menu is very similar, but prices are higher in Hampstead!

ver the Easter holidays, two Wanstead churches hosted a party of 10 visitors from Christus Kirche, a Protestant church in the German town of Engelskirchen, which lies about 17 miles east of Cologne. The party was led by the church pastor, Johannes Vogelbusch, who came with his wife and son.

United Reformed Church Christ Church

Christus Kirche

The visit concluded at Wanstead United Reformed Church with supper on Saturday evening and worship on Sunday morning. Fine Easter candles were presented to both churches. Before departing for Stansted, a number of the group also fitted in a visit to St Mary’s, which is looking very well after fairly recent redecoration. There is no doubt about the benefit of friendships formed and sustained in this way, and in the opinion of the writer, it is never more important than now as our country works out how it should relate to our European neighbours post Brexit. It is therefore important to ensure the link continues to flourish and that younger generations are drawn into it. It was thus a delight to welcome two boys among our visitors and also to attract some new hosts. We now look forward to a return visit to Engelskirchen during Easter 2019. The Corpse Project Sophie Churchill is the founder of The Corpse Project, which explores how we can lay our bodies to rest in ways that help the living and the environment. A workshop this month may help plan your own ending

W

anstead is a great place to live, with its community, wonderful green spaces, shops and transport links. It’s also a good place to die, with excellent funeral directors like Compassionate Funerals – including their death cafés – and the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium. The Corpse Project was set up to help us make the right decisions for us, for our dead bodies, as part of living well. We are glad to be visiting Wanstead Library this month as part of Dying Matters Week. It’s a good idea to think about your death every so often, so you can tell your nearest and dearest what you would like to happen to your body when the time comes. It takes some of the fear out of it and… it is really interesting! The Corpse Project has involved many inspiring people. Muslim teenagers were loyal to their tradition of burial but could see that, for some people, cremation is the best option. Members of the transgender community were very concerned about their gender being protected after their death. Others were just intrigued about death traditions around the world and the options for them. The event this month is an opportunity to share what we have heard and learnt. If you are interested in a ‘green’ funeral, does that mean a woodland burial? It is peaceful and often creates a beautiful environment. But what if you have to drive a long way to get there? Do trees like bodies? Some 75% of people are cremated in this country: what really happens to the body in these cases? Is it much less ‘green’ than burial and can we reduce the fossil fuels used in cremation?

What actually are ashes, and do they feed the roses at the cemetery? What are the best ways of dealing with them? We found brilliant, caring people working in both burial and cremation services and have some answers to share to these questions. Then, of course, there will be new ways to deal with the body in the future. A gentle technique is to dissolve the body in a lime solution, using less energy or land than cremation or burial. Or perhaps the gardeners among us would like to turn to compost and feed the earth? The workshop will update us on new ideas: they may seem strange now, but they are not as ‘way out’ as cremation seemed to the Victorians! Could we come to accept them in the next generation? We will touch on the care and practicalities of the body after death and have plenty of time for discussion as well. Do come along and give some time to your ending and come away positive, peaceful and able to talk to friends and neighbours about this important and intriguing part of life. The Corpse Project workshop will take place at Wanstead Library on 22 May from 7pm (free). For more information, visit thecorpseproject.net

DyIng matTers As part of the Final Party Project – which aims to initiate discussions about death – taking place across Redbridge Libraries this month, soul midwife Sarah Weller introduces her two Wanstead workshops

D

eath and dying hasn’t always been the focus of my work. Originally a lawyer and then lecturer, it was the death of my father that changed everything for me. He did not have the ‘good death’ we aspire to and the experience of his dying was the catalyst for my exploration of spirituality, ceremony and ritual around the transitions in life. An eclectic range of study followed and I immersed myself in a number of modalities, including soul planning, reiki, soul midwifery and on to further study with The British Academy of Sound Therapy. Having then trained as a funeral celebrant and home funeral guide, I was drawn to the work of the Q’ero shaman, following the four directions of the medicine wheel and combining these elements into my work, from the end of life through to a funeral. In my workshops this month, I will be exploring how we can reclaim our connection with death through ceremony and ritual and exploration of our own mortality. There will be the opportunity to learn and enact some of the ritual work together, to experience therapeutic sound and how it is used to support those at the end of life and in ceremony. I think it is important that people have the opportunity for practical involvement in my workshops, to really experience the work. Be prepared to learn how to create a prayer despacho and perform the death spiral ritual in the first event, entitled ‘Calling in the Great Spirit: the work of the East Direction of the Medicine Wheel’. Experience the use of therapeutic sound instruments such as gongs, drums and crystal singing bowls to support the end of life and to read the energy

signature of the body in the second event, entitled ‘Gongs, bowls, oils and colours: energy work at the end of life’. My work has given me the opportunity to use this range of spiritual and energy-based modalities to support people at the end of their lives and I have seen how it can create an exceptional environment for those who are dying, as well as for their families and carers. It is beautiful work to do, and when acknowledged by the community medical team in attendance, is a positive signal for being able to work together towards a common goal when supporting the dying. “I wanted to speak for all the health professionals attending Maureen in her final days and indeed up until her cremation. Few of us had ever witnessed such a dignified and indeed beautiful way of dealing with death. The atmosphere you created and the glorious colour and light were something to behold. It was so moving I will never forget it…” Sarah’s workshops will take place at Wanstead Library on 5 and 6 May from 11am to 1pm (free). For more information, visit sarahwellercelebrant.co.uk

professionals Only With new energy efficiency regulations now in force for rented homes, Jeremy Smith, head of criminal law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explains why the days of the amateur landlord are numbered

T

he government is continuing to enforce regulation within the privately rented property sector. As of last month, there is now a requirement for any properties rented out in the private sector to have a minimum energy performance rating of E on an Energy Performance Certificate. The regulations came into force for new lets and tenancies with effect from 1 April 2018 and for all existing tenancies from 1 April 2020. It will be unlawful to rent a property that breaches the requirement for a minimum E rating unless there is an applicable exemption. A civil penalty of up to £4,000 will be imposed for breaches. For most landlords, this will mean they will no longer be able to rent out a property with a rating of F or G. There are now estimated to be as many as two million private landlords in the UK renting out 22% of all homes – a huge increase on the 9% of homes in the private rental sector 30 years ago. With the sector becoming increasingly strictly regulated, more and more landlords are falling foul of the regulations and substantial fines are becoming commonplace. It is essential that anyone deciding to become a landlord appreciates the extent to which they will be subject to scrutiny by the local authority, and to the full force of the criminal law for any breaches. The local magistrate’s courts, and increasingly the crown courts, deal regularly with large numbers of landlords subject to prosecution for a wide range of offences. The law makes no distinction between a professional and amateur landlord. Every landlord is, by definition, running a business and is expected to adhere to the strict professional standards required of such. Fines

are therefore generally imposed at the higher level typical of commercial prosecutions. What is becoming clear is that the days of the amateur landlord are numbered. None of the rules recently introduced are, in themselves, earth-shattering. For the most part, they involve things that landlords should be or ought to be doing already. However, there are now so many of these rules that, taken together, the regulatory burden on landlords and their agents has become significantly more onerous. Complying with the new regulations will involve setting up strict procedures to be followed when renting out a property. Landlords and agents will need to make sure not only that things are done at the proper time but that they will be able to prove they were done. As ever, if you are considering renting out a property, there is no substitute for professional advice. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead, E11 2PU. T

his is Part Two of a lecture I gave at Wanstead Library last December on local art and artists, but if you missed that one, it doesn’t matter. That talk even inspired a member of the audience to give a similar one on Buckhurst Hill artists. My new event this month will look at local Redbridge personalities who are often ignored and show some paintings that are rarely seen here. The Assembly at Wanstead House (c. 1728–1731) by William Hogarth will be the star picture, which is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. An Infant Orphan Election at the London Tavern by George E Hicks (1865) will also feature, with its links to the Snaresbrook orphanage, but I plan to start with a littleknown portrait of William Penn of Wanstead.

a Grade II* Tudor house dating from 1520, a Georgian building and a 1980s building. Another local artist I will feature is William Finch, who was the art master at Beal School during World War Two. The entire school was evacuated to Oxfordshire from 1940 to 1945 and he painted scenes of the boys, some of which are displayed in Redbridge Museum. One I particularly like is of them digging up potatoes for their school dinners. Finally, I’ll include sketches of Wanstead and Woodford by Robert Barltrop, which were published in the Ilford Recorder, and paintings by Alfred Bennett Bamford. Many of the buildings they portrayed have long since vanished.

Pacifist Quaker William Penn (1644–1718) lived with his family in Wanstead. He liked school so much he ran all the way to Chigwell School, before ‘running’ even further – to the USA – giving his name to the Keystone State, Pennsylvania. Francis Place’s portrait of Penn is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical Society – great thanks to Senior Director Lee Arnold for all his help and forbearance! The Assembly at Wanstead House shows Sir Richard Child, his wife Dorothy and his elegant and wealthy family and friends taking tea and playing cards at his palace – Wanstead House – whilst An Infant Orphan Election portrays widows petitioning (inelegantly buying, bribing) for votes to get their children entered into a good home, if an orphanage can ever be described as such. I will feature at least one work by James Paul Andre, an artist working between 1823 and 1867. He travelled out to Essex and clearly liked the area, painting pictures of Chigwell, Hainault Forest and Woodford Bridge. The Eagle Inn from Eagle Pond (shown here) is a quick, moonlit sketch of a picturesque scene that attracted many artists. In 2007 Epping Forest District Museum bought 51 watercolours by Andre and in 2009 used 12 of them to illustrate a calendar. The museum runs across three buildings in Waltham Abbey,

Jef’s presentation on local artists will take place at Wanstead Library on 10 May from 2pm to 3pm (free) – call 020 8708 7400. The event is organised by the Redbridge Library service on behalf of Vision RCL. The Epping Forest District Museum is located at 39–41 Sun Street, Waltham Abbey, EN9 1EL – call 01992 716 882

Ahead of a talk at Wanstead Library this month about the artwork and posters that chronicled the Spanish Civil War, Nick Dobson outlines the course of a conflict that had complex origins

O

n 17 July 1936 the Spanish Civil War was unleashed on a European stage already witnessing with increasing unease the histrionics of Fascist leaders in Germany and Italy. The origins of the war are deeply complex. To understand them, you need to look deep into Spain’s turbulent history of the 19th century. In the short term, throughout the 1920s, support for the monarchy diminished and in 1931, King Alfonso XIII gave in to pressure for the establishment of a republic. Elections in June 1931 returned a left-wing majority and, as the Second Spanish Republic had broad support from all corners of society, people celebrated an event they hoped would herald Spain’s breakthrough into the 20th century. However, fascism remained a reactive threat, helped by controversial military reforms, and in the 1933 elections, the parties of the right won a majority. Many monarchists joined with the fascist-nationalist Falange to help achieve their aims. Open violence occurred in the streets, and militancy continued to increase as left and right clashed and the slide down the slippery slope to civil war gathered pace. The sacking of generals by the restored republican government in 1934 and tit-for-tat murders resulted in a military rising in Spanish Morocco, quickly spreading to Spain itself. Evenly matched in terms of troops, the Nationalists (those loyal to monarchy and church and led by the Fascists) received support from Italy and Germany. Those loyal to the Republic were supported by the USSR and recruited sympathisers worldwide to form International Brigades (the novelist George Orwell was a prominent recruit). In general, the Nationalists were better equipped and better led with Franco, that ‘murderous little

Franco self-portrait

Nationalist poster

Christian gentleman’, as HG Wells described him, rising to lead the Nationalists in 1936. The war was bloody, with civilians caught up in the horror, most infamously when the Luftwaffe’s Legion Condor bombed Guernica. The Republicans fought hard but won few victories and the Nationalists proclaimed victory on 1 April 1939. Opinion remains divided about Franco. His regime did bring relative peace and stability to a country with deep divisions, but his ruthless repression resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands, the exile of many more and the subjugation of minority groups. Many of those divisions persist to this day. Spanish Surrealists – such as Dali and Picasso – who painted the Civil War captured the grotesque horror of the conflict perfectly with their distorted view of the nation in turmoil. Posters produced by both sides demonstrate the power of art for recruitment and propaganda. The art of the Spanish Civil War conveys the spirit of those turbulent times and tells a story that goes beyond written history. Nick’s talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 2 May from 6.30pm (free; booking required). Call 020 8708 7400

Learn to be dog smart Georgina Golding is a Dogs Trust educational officer. Ahead of a family workshop at Wanstead Library this month, Georgina explains why educating children about dogs is important

D

ogs Trust is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK and was founded in 1891. Our mission is to bring about the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction. Last year, we found great new homes for over 15,000 dogs! The Dogs Trust Education Team has been delivering workshops in schools and in the community since 2003. Covering most of the UK, we are focused on educating children about responsible dog ownership and safety. By helping young people learn about the responsibilities and commitment involved in dog ownership, we believe we can reduce the number of dogs that are mistreated or abandoned. Every year, we visit hundreds of schools and work with thousands of young people, encouraging their personal development and supporting the curriculum. Our ever-growing education programme is aimed at children of all ages, from Key Stage One to Key Stage Four, in the hope of promoting responsible dog ownership or encouraging people to ‘Be Dog Smart’. Our successful campaign is helping children and families understand more about how to behave around dogs to keep themselves safe. Whether children own dogs or not, it is important they learn how to meet dogs in the correct way, learn what to do if they are scared and develop a respect and empathy for any dogs they meet. My job as an education officer is to deliver our workshops in a fun, interactive way. I visit schools, organisations and libraries all over east London to educate children on all things dog related. From science to art and maths to PSHE, there is a workshop suitable for all ages.

My half-term sessions are always great fun and I really enjoy them. The session in Wanstead Library this month will involve stories, quizzes and crafts, all with a doggy educational twist! Using dogs as the theme, our workshops develop communication, cooperation, build confidence and self-esteem, whilst encouraging responsibility and respect. Dogs Trust believe that by educating the next generation of dog owners, we can help to reduce the number of stray and unwanted dogs and keep young people safe around dogs. Our education programme is not linked to fundraising; we simply want to help young people learn more about caring for canine companions and encourage them to be responsible members of their community. The Dogs Trust family learning workshop will take place at Wanstead Library on 30 May from 3pm to 5pm (free; booking required) – call 020 8708 7400. For more information on the Dogs Trust, or to book a free educational workshop, visit learnwithdogstrust.org.uk

In the 11th of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to guitarist Adam Brown, who will be performing at Wanstead Library this month

T

his month, Redbridge Music Society continues its current project of promoting and supporting young, talented musicians with a solo recital given by London-based guitarist Adam Brown. Adam will present the ‘intoxicating rhythms and seductive dances’ of Latin America and will perform music by composers such as Villa Lobos, Lauro, Barrios and Rodriguez, whose works highlight the guitar’s intimate tone. Adam was born in Scotland and studied with Phillip Thorne at the City of Edinburgh Music School before starting studies with the internationally famous guitarist Carlos Bonell as a Foundation Scholar at the Royal College of Music London. He continued his studies with Sharon Isbin at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he obtained a Master of Music degree and subsequently became the first guitarist to receive the Artist Diploma, the Juilliard School’s most prestigious performance award. He then went on to earn a Doctorate in Musical Arts at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles), where he studied with the celebrated guitarists William Kanengiser and Pepe Romero. “Adam Brown is a guitarist of deep musical understanding and expression. His intelligence and commitment consistently make for compelling and illuminating listening experiences,” said William Kanengiser. Adam has performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States and South America. He has appeared at such renowned music festivals as Aspen (USA), Spoleto (Italy), Accademia Chigiana (Italy), Amsterdam International Guitar Festival (Holland), the Musica y Danza Festival (Peru) and the International Guitar Festival at Kings Place in London.

Adam’s first solo album on CD, The Rebels Within, features four 20th-century masterpieces that fuse progressive compositional techniques with aspects of archaic musical structures and language. Gladios, released in 2010, presents the melodic lyricism and rhythmic interplay of music from Latin America whilst Without Limits, released in 2013, highlights the guitar’s pre-eminent role in America’s cultural life by presenting a number of contemporary genres that cross boundaries between classical and popular music. His latest album, Passáro de Madeira, will be available soon. Adam’s recent performances in Portugal and Spain have included solo recitals featuring a survey of works composed for the lute, vihuela and classical, Latin, jazz and contemporary guitar. Later this year, Adam will be performing in Edinburgh (International Fringe Festival) and in Sorrento. Adam will perform at Wanstead Library on 22 May from 8pm (tickets on the door: £10; members: £7). For more information, call 07511 888 520 or visit wavidi.co/rms. Redbridge Music Society is supported by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure and is affiliated to Making Music.

Window boxes are very versatile. I have one by my front window full of flowers I change throughout the year, and one in the back garden I use to grow salad leaves.

Why not do something for yourself and nature at the same time? I chose a mix that looks good, tastes great and keeps the bees happy: Thyme, Parsley, Rosemary and Chives. All are fab for cooking and the latter two have pretty little flowers as well. Finally, plant some mint in a separate pot as it tends to take over. Harvest your herbs by cutting the upper third of the stem. Go down to where two leaves are growing and cut just above the leaves.

If you have more space, add a few nectar-rich, pollinator-friendly plants to your beds. These are easy to grow and will last all summer. zz Verbena bonariensis: electric purple flowers zz Cosmos bipinnatus: white or vibrant pink zz Gaura lindheimeri: loved by butterflies

A hot pot for the front step

zz Salvia ‘Love and Wishes’: beautiful and unfussy

For a pot brimming with colour, you really can’t go wrong with Pelargoniums and Geraniums. Mo at Heads ‘n’ Tails on the High Street usually has some lovely varieties. Geraniums are loved by pollinators, Pelargoniums not so much, so try combining RHS Plant of the Century, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ for the bees and Pelargonium sidoides for impact in a big pot. Both widely available online.

I bought these plants recently at Chigwell Nursery. The box includes: Erysimum (a beauty that comes in a wide variety of colours, mauve in this case), Aubrieta ‘Silver Variegated’, Phlox subulata Fabulous Blue Violet and Muehlenbeckia.

In the second of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multi-garden nature reserve – award-winning gardener Mark Lonergan explains how you can help green up the local area with some wildlifefriendly garden containers

QWERTYSDFGVCAZXPLK JH

I

think we can safely say it’s spring and memories of snowmen on Christchurch Green are fading. With the hope of a long summer ahead, it’s a good time to think about greening up your garden – even if you only have a window ledge. Adding plants to the places we live has enormous benefits. A container, planted up by your front door, looks great, will cheer you up every time you see it, is really easy to do and adds a significant benefit to the environment. Wild Wanstead’s ambition to create London’s first multi-garden nature reserve and, in particular, the aim of bringing back pollinators to our gardens is worth all our support. To show how quick and easy it can be, I have put together a few container-planting ideas you can try out. If you water them and do a bit of deadheading, you’ll have colour for months to come. A few simple tips to help your plants thrive: zz If you are reusing pots, make sure they are clean. A dirty pot is the perfect home for slugs and snails, so give them a wash first. zz If you are buying a new pot, also buy a dish for it to sit in at the same time to help conserve water.

LKJHGFERTWVDCS LKJHGFERTWVDCS LKJHGFERTWVDCS LKJHGFERTWVDCS QWERTYSDFGVCAZXPLK WILD WANSTEAD zz Don’t reuse old compost. Fresh compost will provide all the food your plants need to sustain them during the coming months, so give them a good home. zz Water the plants well before removing them from their pots. And then don’t allow the compost to dry out, remember to water regularly, especially when it hasn’t rained. zz Deadhead every time you think of it to promote flowering all summer long. zz If you are going on holiday, don’t panic. If you don’t have a helpful neighbour, give your containers a really good water before you go and move them to the shadiest location you have. If you can, put your pots in a container to act as a water bath, which will also help collect rainwater. Whatever you do, don’t overcomplicate it. Buy some plants you like, put them in a pot of good quality compost and keep them watered. If we all do that, Wanstead will be a greener, more pleasant place for all. In the first of a series of articles looking at the issues surrounding divorce, local resident and divorce consultant Sonia Limbada explains some of the amicable options for dealing with the family home

D

eciding on how to deal with the family home can be the most difficult part of ending your marriage. Not only is it the biggest asset you’ve got but it’s also the one you feel most sentimental about. The situation becomes even more complicated when you have young children to think about. It’s a difficult decision but it isn’t an impossible one. There are lots of options to choose from, and if you can work together towards a friendly divorce, you can find one that works for you. All the law requires is that you provide a suitable home for your young children; other than that, you are free to come up with your own unique solutions.

an agreement, check you can afford the mortgage payments and that your mortgage company will let you take on the mortgage on your own.

If there’s enough money in the house, you could sell it and split the money between you. As long as your agreement is fair, the money doesn’t have to be split equally. For example, the person looking after the children might need more money to buy a bigger house or the person earning a lower salary might need a larger deposit.

Another way of holding on to the property is to delay the sale until an agreed event occurs. For example, one person can live in the house until the youngest child turns 18, at which point the house can be sold and the money split between you. The split of money would be agreed at the time of the divorce, not when you sell the property.

Before you can decide what’s right for you, get your house valued, draw up a budget and check out your mortgage options. When you are working out how much money there is in the pot, don’t forget to deduct the cost of selling the house and the cost of buying a new property, including stamp duty and any removal costs.

These are just some of the options to consider. There are many other ways that an amicable agreement can be reached.

If you want to hold on to the property, you can buy the other partner out by giving them money or another asset of the marriage, such as a pension. The house and mortgage will be transferred into your name and the other person can be released from the mortgage. Before you enter into such

Whatever you decide, make sure you get it drawn up in a legally binding consent order and approved by the court so that you are both protected. Paradise Island

Independent local travel advisor Jack Leaf presents a guide to Corsica, a Mediterranean island off the French mainland that is seeking to raise its visitor numbers from the UK

T

he mountainous Mediterranean island of Corsica has been French for over 200 years. The Corsicans are proudly independent of the mainland and feel closer to their Italian neighbours, not least those on the island of Sardinia, just a 30-minute ferry crossing from the south of Corsica to the north of Sardinia. Of course, as a tourist embarking on a holiday to a Mediterranean island, it’s good to know your destination has many good quality beaches, such as Plage de Palombaggia, which is one of the most famous on the island. But there is more to Corsica than beaches, for Corsica is regarded as chic and sophisticated. Take a look at the swish Casadelmar hotel, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, located just outside Porto Vecchio in the south-west of the island. Contemporary in style yet designed to merge with its environment, the hotel is known for its hospitality and gastronomy, which encapsulates what Corsica is all about. And just across the bay is La Plage, which is a more relaxed family venue stretching out onto its own puff sandy beach. The island is larger than most people realise; it has three international airports. Air Corsica is inaugurating direct flights in May 2018, with sociable flight times from Stansted to Figari, Ajaccio and Bastia and taking only two hours. Fares are very reasonable as the airline creates a presence in the minds of Londoners seeking somewhere near that is experiential, that is more than just a beach and a hotel. With a rich military and naval history, Napoleon is probably Corsica’s most famous citizen, born in Bonifacio in 1769 just as Corsica passed from Genoan to French rule. Bonifacio is the oldest town in Corsica, balancing on

The cliffs of Bonifacio, Corsica

top of a cliff overlooking a natural harbour with Roman origins: who cannot dream of the shimmering sea, the beautiful boutique shops and relaxing in family restaurants and soaking up the sun’s rays in the kerbside cafés? Porto Vecchio is the premier resort, with its magnificent yachts adorning the marina, fashionable bars and restaurants catering for the jetset, and beautiful beaches and high mountain scenery showcasing why Corsica is a great destination to enjoy trekking and nature in general. The clear seas are perfect for snorkelling and diving, the land terrain perfect for cycling. For those partial to wine, head to Sartene, made infamous by piracy and gangsters but now making the most of its valley for growing grapes. I’ve only focused on the part of Corsica I know best (there’s so much to enjoy on this idyllic island). So, jet off to Corsica and enjoy its uniqueness, and get there before everyone else discovers it! Jack is based in Snaresbrook – visit destiny-travel.co.uk or call 020 8989 6764. Be safe, not sorry From phone snatching to a weapon attack, PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team offers advice on how to keep yourself and your property safe when out and about

C

rime methods are always changing but the criminal mind does not, which means if we understand their inspiration (money) and their stimulation (not getting caught), we can help to safeguard ourselves. Most importantly, you need to be aware of your surroundings, those around you, exits and possible risks. We all do this instinctively, but with more distractions in our environment than ever, this is not always easy. Try to avoid wearing headphones; your ability to hear traffic, strangers and other potential risks will be restricted. Using your phone also makes you less in tune with your environment. Plan your journeys ahead, especially at night, and avoid dark, deserted areas. Always let somebody know your intentions and expected time of arrival. Plans can change but a text or call takes seconds and should be made before leaving a public place like a station. Check your belongings are safe and secure before moving off. A carelessly left bag could cause an unnecessary distraction for the emergency services. Walk towards oncoming traffic. This means that a stranger has no reason to stop to offer you a lift. You also have more time to evaluate an oncoming threat using street furniture for cover if needed. A snatch on foot, by bike or scooter can come from any direction, so make sure valuables are not visible and bags are across your shoulder. Avoid overuse of laptop bags and if you need to use your phone, use a hands-free device. If you are confronted, hand over what they want. They might have a weapon, even if one is not visible. Robbers will often work in groups for intimidation or moving of stolen

items. Giving chase could lead to an unknown confrontation or unnecessary risks being taken. Don’t risk giving chase – remember items can be replaced but you cannot, so don’t be a hero. There have been reports of snatching taking place while vehicles are stationary, so always lock your doors and keep sat navs centrally placed, out of reach from an open window. If your phone doubles up as your satnav, it should be similarly placed or out of sight to stop temptation. Take photos of valuable property, write down serial numbers, like your IMEI number on you mobile phone (dial *#06#) and have emergency contact information to hand, such as your bank should you need to cancel a card. In the rare event of a weapon attack: zz Run to a place of safety. This is a far better option than to surrender or negotiate. zz If there’s nowhere to go, then hide. It’s better to hide than to confront. Remember to turn your phone to silent and turn off vibrate. Barricade yourself in if you can. zz Then finally, and only when it is safe to do so, tell the police by calling 999. To contact the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team, call 020 8721 2796

At the Annual General Meeting in 1906, a member suggested that marks should be awarded at the society’s monthly lantern slide competitions, with a certificate or other reward to go to the member with the highest number of points at the end of the year. This idea was rejected, the prevailing opinion being that competition was not necessary as an incentive to improvement. In 1911, Ilford Photographic Society invited Woodford to join in a competition with about 20 other local clubs, but the records do not indicate whether Woodford accepted. The society evidently enjoyed varied social activities at this time. A programme dated January 1912 shows the club held a whist drive and musical evening with entertainment provided by members and their families after an interval for refreshments. At other times, the minutes make references to summer activities, such as rambles and coach outings, with a prize being offered for the best print of a photograph taken on these excursions. In October 1914, William Wastell organised a public showing of slides in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund and raised the sum of £8 6s 6d. The activities of the club were reduced at this time because of the First World War. Although meetings continued for a time, and the sparse accounts show membership subscriptions and affiliation fees for 1917, 1918 and 1919, there do not appear to have been any formal meetings between the AGMs in 1917 and 1919. Meetings resumed on 16 November 1919, held at the Wilfrid Lawson Hotel, but from January 1920 the society moved to the Woodford Memorial Hall. The postponed 21st annual exhibition was held in April 1921 and, because of post-war difficulties, the society decided not to have an exhibition catalogue. At this exhibition, the names of 16 new exhibitors appear as well as the names of older members. During its first 25 years, the society had achieved many of its objectives. There had been great changes and developments in

materials and techniques, and members had kept abreast of these developments by trial and error, achieving success in competitions and producing a survey of Woodford, which was of historical interest. The First World War broke the sequence and created a shortage of materials, but as the society was able to stage the exhibition in 1921, it is clear the pre-war impetus had survived. The programme continued in a similar way to the pre-war era with lectures and demonstrations. For example, in November 1922, Bernard Cook, a member and City of London verderer, gave a historical and pictorial presentation on Epping Forest, illuminated by autochrome slides. There were 32 members and 20 visitors present at that meeting. There were also changes made at this time. At the 23rd annual exhibition in 1923, awards were made to preliminary members for the first time. This exhibition received a 33-inch report in The Woodford Times. The attitude to competition had evidently changed since 1906, when the idea of having competitions was rejected, for another innovation was the arrangement of a print competition in October 1926, with judging by popular vote. In 1922, the society agreed to admit ladies to membership and Miss GE Powers became the first lady member. But the society was slow to recognise the existence of female members. In the programme for 1924–1925, some of

The Woodford Congregational Church on Broomhill Road, Woodford Green, taken by Woodford Photographic Society member William Wastell in 1910 (now the site of Hawkey Hall)

In the third of a series of articles celebrating the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society’s 125th anniversary year, club member Alan Simpson offers some insight into the group’s history, which in turn provides a pictorial record of our changing surroundings

the meetings have an asterisk beside them and there is a note at the bottom which says: “These lectures are illustrated with lantern slides and are suitable evenings on which members might bring their lady friends.” A few years later, in 1927, Norah Cross was the first woman to be elected as president for the year.

A History of Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society was originally written in 1968 by George Hunt and updated in 2002 by Gillian Hutchinson. Alan Simpson has again updated the text for the group’s 125th anniversary. Visit wavidi.co/wwps
