Is history a science or an art form? It’s a well known and – within certain circles – a frequently debated question. Science deals with objective facts and art develops out of subjective interpretation, and historians straddle the two, so the answer is presumably a combination of science and art. Sometimes a history lesson will be a factual insight into the cause of an event, at other times it will be an exploration of its meaning, and one without the other would leave our knowledge of the past somewhat lacking. When it comes to local history, nothing piques the interest of a community like reminiscing about High Street shops. Like many urban areas with a village atmosphere, there is a strong bond here between residents and their main shopping street. It’s why campaigns to prevent certain changes to High Street life are fought so hard, and it’s why there are such strong views about the businesses that trade there. From Woolworths to Dunhams, Sketchleys and Bartons the Bakers, there are facts and figures that make up the history of local shopping, but there are also stories, memories and real lives that define it. Whether celebrating the anniversary of a 20-year-old community group, being nostalgic about our High Street or turning back time even further to explore local heritage, history lessons can take a variety of forms. And the history teachers are not always professors, or even teachers; they may be members of our communities, those who were part of the events in question or anyone sharing a memory with a friend. We are all students in the classroom of local history and, perhaps more importantly, we are all Lee Marquis, Editor potential teachers.

Redbridge Council’s consultation on the proposed changes to parking regulations in Wanstead has been branded a ‘serious breach of trust with local people’ by campaigners who claim it has failed to meet the ‘gold standard’ level of consultation that was promised. The content of the questionnaire itself has also been criticised for failing to ensure it meets the community’s needs. “Local campaigners are only pursuing one option of everyone being properly consulted on the full range of measures, and not no parking scheme in

‘Door still open’ for Wanstead Park Heritage Lottery Fund bid

Handymen The Friends of Wanstead Parklands AGM was well attended

The Superintendent of Epping Forest, Paul Thomson, has confirmed ‘the door was still open’ to a lottery bid to fund Wanstead Park’s regeneration and that City of London officers would be making a recommendation to that effect. The comments were made at the Friends of Wanstead Parklands’ recent AGM following an announcement that a Heritage Lottery Fund bid will not go ahead in August as planned due to a number of uncertainties, including a contested assessment that the park’s dams require reinforcement.

Wanstead Library expected to reopen in July after improvement works

Organisers of a regular music night at Wanstead Golf Club are inviting Chas ‘n’ Dave fans to a charity gig this month. The 72 Club – which has been hosting tribute acts at the Overton Drive venue for the past five years – welcomes ‘rockney’ impersonators Charles and David on 20 May (tickets: £10; doors open 7.30pm). “Our knees-up night will see all proceeds donated to Cancer Research, so please come along with a community spirit and support this worthy cause,” said event organiser Terry Austen. Call 07908 070 174

Wanstead Library, which is currently closed for refurbishment, is scheduled to reopen in late June or early July. The improvement works taking place include a ‘thorough redecoration’, the installation of new furniture and shelving and a number of repairs, including a new floor throughout the venue. “We know people care deeply about their libraries and, of course, we’ll endeavour to open Wanstead Library as soon as we can,” said Councillor Sheila Bain. The library’s adjoining hall – used for meetings and events – is unaffected by the closure.

Wanstead Park tree disease

Aldersbrook Farmers’ Market

An outbreak of Phytophthora ramorum – known as sudden oak death – in Wanstead Park was caught early, according to the Superintendent of Epping Forest. The disease is a funguslike pathogen that causes damage to a wide range of trees and plants, and is a serious threat to beech trees in particular. The City of London Corporation, which manages the park, are seeking expert advice on how to tackle the problem.

The Aldersbrook Farmers’ Market will return to the bowls club this month. “We’ve seen a growing demand for more stalls and lots of approaches from local traders to be at our market in May after the success of our March event. Local support and interest is really strong. We’ll be having an even better selection of food,” said organiser Mark McKee. The market will be open from 10am to 2pm on 13 May. Visit wavidi.co/afm

Fresh

AIR

T

here seems to have been a frenzy of paving activity taking place in Wanstead recently. Is this due to the threat of the new parking restrictions, IÂ wonder? Of course, the paving of front gardens is nothing new: over the past 10 years, the number of front gardens with gravel or paving instead of grass has tripled, now making up a quarter of all houses, a survey for the Royal Horticultural Society shows. There has been much focus in London recently on the deteriorating quality of the air we breathe, especially from PM10 particles emitted by diesel vehicles. The dangers to asthmatics and young people are especially worrying. Those of us with outside spaces of our own can all play a part in cleaning the air (apart from driving less or converting to a cleaner car). Planting a tree and some shrubs in your front garden, for example, actually helps purify the air with the added bonuses of increasing habitats for wildlife, reducing noise and keeping our streets cooler in summer. Another reason people pave their gardens from fence to fence and house to pavement is that they think greenery is difficult to maintain. However, there are beautiful small trees, such as ornamental hawthorn, winter-flowering cherry or Amelanchier lamarckii, suitable for the smallest of front gardens and flowering evergreen shrubs that

May 2017 can be left alone with just an optional annual trim, such as Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’, Choisya ternata, Mahonia japonica, Pittosporum tobira or various Hebe varieties, with Vinca minor or hardy geraniums as ground cover. All will enhance the look of your house without taking up too much space if you do need to park your car off road. The other thing to bear in mind is the regulation about permeable surfaces. Because conventional hard surfaces do not absorb rainwater, all this paving has contributed to extra surface water going into drains (instead of back into the soil and feeding the ground water), causing flooding and depriving the ground water supplies. Plus, it can overload the sewerage system. A regulation exists to enforce permeable hard surfaces of over five square metres in size in front gardens (visit wavidi.co/gdnrules).

Art Trail Wanstead will return this September. With the theme announced as ‘A breath of fresh air’, Kathy Taylor looks at one way we can contribute to fresh air in Wanstead (new parking restrictions notwithstanding)

In 2005 Redbridge Council ran a campaign to encourage people to keep plants in their front gardens. Unfortunately, parking policies can often be at odds with this as the less street parking available for residents, the more likely people are to pave their front gardens. Have you ever noticed the cool, fresh smell when coming out of Wanstead Tube Station from the centre of London? This is because of how green Wanstead is. Let’s keep it that way!

Thought for food In the first of a series of articles, Wanstead resident Roz Kara, founder of the Elated Eating campaign, explains why she wants the local community to think about where their food comes from

M

y Elated Eating campaign aims to inspire the local community to grow their own seasonal vegetables and fruits, eat less meat and buy local, as well as show our children how to plant, grow and cook good food. Most parents change their priorities entirely after having children. After being vegetarian since my late teens, a yoga bunny and a part-time runner before children, I didn’t stop being me exactly but spent less time thinking about my own health and focused on the children. I cared less about whether my food was organic, homegrown, sustainable or even cruelty-free. Yet, I made everything for the children from scratch using organic produce. Once the twins were old enough to walk and talk, I got back into yoga and running, then one day I just thought: “What on earth am I doing? I used to be meat- and dairy-free. I care deeply about the environment. What kind of world am I leaving for my children and what lessons am I showing them by the way I live?” Which prompted me to return my focus to health and the environment. Then, I responded to an advert and signed up for an allotment in Wanstead Park Road. The rest is a history in the making. In 2016 I studied Social Media Strategy with a view to getting back to work once the twins started school. I decided to pour my passion into a community social media campaign to inspire others to make simple changes. Grow your own seasonal vegetables anywhere you can. If you can’t grow them, buy seasonal food locally, try to eat less meat – which supports the environment – and as much as possible, buy in your local area from independent shops, farms and markets and support the community in and around Wanstead.

Rainbow chard growing at a local allotment

I believe we have become too reliant on imported food. We are losing the knowledge of where food comes from, what grows during which season and how to grow food in general. There is a vegetable crisis in the UK, but it is not a lack of iceberg lettuces or courgettes, but instead a lack of understanding about seasonality and sustainability. At this time of year, there are lots of delicious, seasonal British vegetables to choose from. Instead of imported broccoli, why not try some seasonal purple sprouting broccoli or a head of cauliflower? No spinach? No problem. There is a wide variety of kale and chard on offer along with plenty of other seasonal produce, such as artichokes, beetroot, chicory, morel mushrooms, parsnips, radishes, rhubarb and even British lettuce. Right now, the best potatoes you will eat are locally grown new potatoes or Jersey Royals. I use Organic Lea for my local delivery of seasonal, organic fruit and vegetables. They include notes about the food, where it came from, what to cook with it and will even send you recipes if you ask. For more information on the campaign, visit wavidi.co/elatedeating

The big five The first in a series of five monthly concerts will take place in Wanstead Park this month. Gill James from the Friends of Wanstead Parklands introduces the first headline act and reports on more upcoming events

I

f you go down to the woods today… you might see the Big Bad Wolf in Wanstead Park’s Temple garden. No need to be frightened though; this Big Bad Wolf is a London-based quartet, described as producing “scintillating sun-drenched music, featuring lazy trombone and truly amazing riffs”. You can catch them on the afternoon of 21 May, along with indie rock band The Switches, plus more local musical talent. This summer’s Sunday afternoon al fresco event in the most beautiful place in east London is the first in a series of five monthly concerts scheduled until September. Bring a picnic, sit on the grass and buy drinks from the pop-up bar. Entry a snip at just £2 on the gate. You can take a free tour of the Temple while you are there. The Temple is not a religious building, except in the eyes of lovers of fine architecture. Arguably the only 18th-century summer house left standing in this area, it is a treat to behold in this idyllic setting. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are keen to raise the profile of the Temple and its surrounding park, and to see it enjoyed more by local people. They are working with the City of London, who own the park, to make a Heritage Lottery Bid to improve various aspects of the Park. They have already successfully won a grant from Tesco to improve the seating around the tea hut, which we will all be able to enjoy this summer. In addition to the concerts, a series of events are planned in and around the Temple itself, at least one for every month of the year. This includes a programme of guided walks on history and wildlife, culminating in the Epping Forest Walks Festival in October. For children, an exciting new programme of

Big Bad Wolf

nature activities is about to be launched. The first of these will be part of the Wren Wildlife Group’s Bio Blitz weekend (16 to 18 June). Then, on 8 July, there will be a children’s fun day in the Temple garden. The park will also welcome back those old favourites, the Illyria travelling theatre company, who will be performing three summer plays in their own inimitable style. Many thanks to the City of London for bringing a touch of Hampstead to Wanstead. The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are keen to ensure the Temple stays open every weekend on both Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year so that we can continue to enjoy and make further use of this wonderful place. As staffing shortages can be an issue for the City of London, they have offered to organise a pool of volunteers who are willing to help out at the Temple on an occasional basis. Please get in touch with me if you would like to get involved. Live music will be performed at the Temple garden in Wanstead Park on 21 May from 2pm to 7pm (entry: £2). For more information on Wanstead Park, visit wansteadpark.org.uk. To volunteer at the Temple, email gilljames@btinternet.com

Sharia law At Wanstead Library this month, local solicitor Sadikur Rahman will lead a discussion on Sharia councils and tribunals in the UK. Paul Kaufman, chairman of the East London Humanists, reports

S

haria councils and tribunals have come under increasing scrutiny in the UK. There is an ongoing Home Office review, whose remit is to look at “best practice” and a Select Committee review, which is taking a broader look at how such councils operate in practice. Sadikur sits on the Council of the National Secular Society (NSS). The NSS campaigns for a secular legal system, which is one where the concerns of the state and religion are kept separate. This means that the state should not interfere with religious practice, provided it causes no harm to others. By the same token, the religious should not enjoy any special privileges, including picking and choosing from their own legal menu rather than the law of the land. Sadikur is concerned the government may decide to recommend some form of accommodation of Sharia law. This could be through decisions of Sharia councils being given legal validity by UK judges or through state regulation. Sadikur also seeks to dispel any scaremongering. At present, it remains the case that decisions of Sharia councils have no legal validity and are not legally binding, particularly when it comes to marriage, divorce and custody of children. They also only concern civil issues, not criminal matters where there is, in this country, no recognition or call for Sharia law practices. However, he warns that the prospect of separate legal systems for different religious communities represents a very real risk to our secular legal system. One area of concern is discrimination by Sharia councils towards women, such as the weight given to their testimony, their right to custody of children and views on domestic violence. Another is the lack of certainty as to what Sharia law is. Islamic jurisprudence and

modern attempts at reform have thrown open interpretations of the discriminatory rules relating to women, although they still remain at its root. Sharia law is not codified and is open to as many interpretations as there are Sharia councils. There may be differences between the four schools of Islamic law and more differences between Sunni, Shia, Ahmadi and other sects. Consequently, if the government seeks to condone a liberal interpretation as “best practice”, it will be choosing sides in a complex and controversial theological debate. Even if some councils are deemed “good”, there will be nothing to prevent those with more fundamentalist views from setting up their own. Sadikur argues that, ultimately, a secular state where all religions and beliefs are equal under the law remains the best guarantee of the right to freedom of religion and belief. Sadikur will be speaking at an East London Humanists discussion at Wanstead Library on 22 May from 7.30pm (visitors welcome; free). Visit wavidi.co/elh

S

hopping in Wanstead offers a different experience to that offered in other parts of the borough. There are still many independent shops and only a handful of national chains. Winifred Eastment, a local author, describes Wanstead High Street in the mid-19th century as being a “sleepy little main street”, which had about half a dozen shops. Over the years, the number of shops has increased and the retailers have adapted to the changing times. One example is Stockdales, established in 1867 in Cambridge Park, which was a leather goods specialist. Originally, they sold “reliable harness for the traveller of those days.” Later, they diversified and offered “travel kit, fancy leather goods and sports requisites.” Many of the shops that existed in the 19th century went out of business as fashions, tastes and habits changed. The milliners, cab and fly proprietor and fancy repositories have long become redundant.

One of the early supermarkets to open in Wanstead was Fine Fare. It was retailing in Wanstead in the 1960s until the 1980s and was famous for its yellow-packaged, ownlabel budget range. Fine Fare was replaced by Gateway, which then became Somerfield. The Somerfield chain was taken over by the Co-operative Group in March 2009 when the Somerfield name was gradually phased out. Woolworths, located where Tesco is now, closed in December 2008 when the company ceased trading nationally. Home and Colonial was another national retailer that used to have a presence here. The chain was a provision merchants, which traded at 23 High Street. Do you remember Edwin Fisher the furniture shop or Rollys, who specialised in hosiery, lingerie, corsetry, gloves, knitwear and blouses? Edwin Fisher was in the High Street and Rollys was in Cambridge Park during the 1960s. Perhaps you remember Dunhams in the High Street? Dunhams was a branch of Fairheads (which was in Ilford). Dunhams used an overhead, mechanical cash-handling system in the form of a small railway. Part of this mechanism is now in the Redbridge Museum collection. In the Dunhams’ winter sale of 1981 you could purchase ladies’ fancy knit cotton vests for 99p (usual price £1.35!). Dunhams sold linen, curtains, underwear, baby clothes and hosiery. Bodgers was a long-established bakers in Wanstead. George Bodger is shown in the 1851 census as operating a bakers business. The family business is included in the 1911 census and also in the Kellys Directory of 1955. Another bakers you may remember was Bartons, who were in the High Street from the 1960s until the 1980s. Come along to our heritage coffee morning and share your local shopping memories and see photographs and other archive material. The heritage coffee morning will take place on 17 May from 11am to 12pm at Aldersbrook Library (free; booking required). Call 020 8708 2032

In the sixth of a series of articles, David Bird discusses the work of the Redbridge Music Society and introduces us to Pelléas Ensemble, a flute, viola and harp trio who will be performing in Wanstead this month

T

his is the last event of Redbridge Music Society’s current programme of recitals, the key aim of which this season has been to promote talented young musicians by bringing them to perform to the people of Redbridge under the society’s ‘Wigmore to Wanstead’ programme of chamber concerts. This month, the award-winning Pelléas Ensemble will perform a diverse range of music, from Bach to Richard Rodney Bennett, at Wanstead Library’s Churchill Room. The Pelléas Ensemble – Luba Tunnicliffe (viola), Henry Roberts (flute) and Oliver Wass (harp) – has received much recognition and acclaim since it was formed at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011, whilst the players were still students. They were winners of the 2017 Elias Fawcett Award for Outstanding Chamber Ensemble at the Royal Overseas League Competition and in 2016 won both the Grand Prize and the Audience Prize in the St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music Competition. In November 2016, they made their debut at the Wigmore Hall, at which they were praised by Seen and Heard International for their “captivating vitality” and “effortlessness and delicacy.” They have given numerous recitals at other London venues, including St John’s Smith Square, and have also appeared live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. The players take communication with their audiences very seriously and have established a reputation for performing their recitals from memory, which they believe creates an immediate and more intimate connection with their listeners. They aim to make every listener at their recitals feel that the flute, viola and harp are being played “just for them” and for nobody else.

The combination of flute, viola and harp is somewhat unusual and repertoire written specifically for such a combination is relatively rare. However, this provides the ensemble players with the opportunity to perform many arrangements of existing works in ways where they can explore different types of sound worlds and textures. The players are dedicated to performing new music; they have recently premiered new works and have also commissioned a number of pieces, some with a very strong jazz influence, which they hope will appeal to younger audiences. One recently commissioned work is by jazz bass player and composer Misha Mullov-Abbado, son of violinist Viktoria Mullova and the late Claudio Abbado. The Pelléas Ensemble is rapidly becoming a much sought-after group and their recital will provide the perfect finish to our season. Pelléas Ensemble will perform at Wanstead Library on 23 May from 8pm (tickets available on the door; visitors: £10; Redbridge Music Society members: £7). gArden grEetings Wanstead resident Teresa Farnham is the local area organiser for the National Garden Scheme, which encourages people across the country to open their gardens and welcome in the public for charity

N

ow is the time of year when the owners of gardens opening for the National Garden Scheme realise they will never have enough time for planting, pruning, feeding and propagating – all the jobs that gardeners enjoy but usually do at their leisure – before their open day. The gardens range from the small (such as mine on Greenstone Mews in Wanstead) to the large (such as Latimer Road in Forest Gate, where the owner has created a beautiful oasis in what was a derelict builders’ yard area at the end of her garden). We all agree there is never enough time before our open days. I am always very grateful that the owners allow the public to visit their personal patch. New openers for the NGS usually ask me, with trepidation, “Will anybody come?” Yes, is the answer! Some visitors make a habit of visiting ‘new’ gardens every season and travel up and down the country. There is always something that owners are not happy with – this year my strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is showing signs of losing a big branch. I love this evergreen tree. A relict of the Ice Age, this species was left behind in the retreat of glaciers in the southwest of France and Ireland. I would encourage anyone to plant it in a small garden; the peeling bark is attractive and the bell-shaped flowers attract bees. Plant a small shrub and watch it grow, but give it room if you want it to be a feature. And my palm tree is about to flower, but I think visitors will have to look at a photo as unfortunately, it grows above the pond and the pollen drops down – the fish think it is food – so I have to cut the blooms off as soon as they show. That is the price of growing a tropical plant in a small place.

The garden of Greenstone Mews, Wanstead

Open gardens can encourage timid gardeners to grow something new or to try adding an unusual feature, such as a miniature railway (Ashurst Drive, Barkingside), a eucalyptus pruned to resemble a mature oak (Goldhaze Close, Woodford Green), unusual fruit trees (Harold Road, Leytonstone), a typical suburban garden with flowers and vegetables with delectable teas and plants for sale (Cheyne Avenue, South Woodford) or beautiful koi carp (Maida Way, Chingford). Through the generosity of visitors, over £3 million pounds was raised for the NGS in total last year, with £190,000 from London gardens. I am aware that most London gardens are small, but my final plea is to open your garden, maybe together with a neighbour who is willing to provide tea and cake. You could boost NGS funds for charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, Queen’s Nursing Institute and Parkinson’s UK. For more information on the gardens open locally this year, pick up the NGS London guide book from a local library, or visit ngs.org.uk. To contact Teresa, email farnhamz@yahoo.co.uk

Riverside homes Senior Nature Conservation Ranger Francis Castro explains the work that has been taking place in recent months to entice otters back to our stretch of the River Roding

I

n recent months, the Nature Conservation Ranger Team from Vision RCL, along with the Wild Trout Trust and City of London Epping Forest Team (with funding from the Environment Agency River Catchment Partnership), have been working to make improvements to habitats along the River Roding in Wanstead, which we hope will encourage otters to this part of the river. Otters are already doing well along the Roding, but only in the northerly stretches in Essex. Juvenile otters disperse once they have been forced out of their parents’ territory, some heading south to the bright lights of the city and the urban river landscape. Unfortunately, the River Roding in Redbridge has been heavily engineered since the A406 and M11 were built, with many sections being straightened to make way for the motorway, losing the valuable flood plains and meanders associated with natural rivers. This engineering has had an impact on the river’s ecology, with fewer fish and aquatic plants being able to establish themselves as the river washes out everything in its path during storm events. This means our pioneer otters, who have travelled down from Essex, are struggling to survive, with habitats and food in short supply. Working with our partners, we are looking to create ‘in-channel’ features that provide refuge for small fish and speed up flow to keep the river’s gravel bed free from silt. We will also be creating an otter home, called a holt, in readiness for a brave otter or two who may decide to stay in Redbridge. We are taking great care in terms of flood risk to make sure what we are putting in the river is not harmful to local flood defences, working with experts and liaising with the Environment Agency.

It is, of course, a work in progress as improvements to river habitats take time and a balanced ecology is essential before our stretch of the Roding can sustain a small otter population. We therefore have no plans to artificially introduce otters – we want to encourage a natural colonisation from populations in the north. The valuable work we are doing with our partners and hardworking local volunteers – from active habitat improvements to the litter picks and action days – is of great importance, not only for the future of otters in Redbridge, but all of the river’s wildlife. A better river habitat is good for people too, providing natural landscapes for visitors to relax in, meditate and watch wildlife, as well as that popular pastime of fishing. I do hope this article has inspired you to take part and we would love to hear from you if you would like to join us in our work. An otter holt creation day will take place at the Wanstead Park Road Recreation Ground on 2 May from 10am (Exeter Gardens entrance). s a child, I went to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Wanstead and later attended Trinity Catholic High School in Woodford Green. I went on to graduate from Wimbledon College of Art in 2013 with a first class honours degree in Fine Art. The following year, I was accepted onto a scholarship to study at the Royal Drawing School. It was at the Royal Drawing School I decided to focus my work largely around the human form. Whilst studying, I worked as a studio assistant for renowned portrait painter Stuart Pearson Wright. In 2015 I was accepted to exhibit work at the National Portrait Gallery as part of the BP Portrait Award, an annual competition that sees thousands of hopeful painters entering from all over the world and represents the very best in contemporary portrait painting. Since exhibiting in the BP Portrait Award, I have undertaken various commissions. My current projects include painting three Olympic boxers who received medals at last year’s Rio Olympics. With each portrait, my aim is to capture an authentic essence of the sitter. This encompasses two tasks: to create an accurate visual representation of the sitter but also to create an image that communicates something about the subject’s character. The latter is perhaps the most challenging, but often the most interesting, aspect. I like to have as many sittings from life as possible. This allows me to get a better understanding of the sitter’s facial features but also gives me more time to get to know the person I’m painting. I also take a series of photographs that I use for reference. It’s important to me that the portrait does more than just resemble the sitter; I want my paintings to say something about the person. Shawn’s work will be on show at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition at the Mall Galleries from 4 to 19 May. In the second of a series of articles explaining the work of Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch, Steve Wilks talks about the role of the organisation’s ward and watch coordinators

I

n this article, I will aim to provide a bit of structure around how Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is organised. There is a ward coordinator who is responsible for communicating with and supporting existing watches, as well as helping to establish new watches. The ward coordinators all work within a given framework to establish a certain degree of consistency in their approach. They also provide assistance to the watch coordinators where necessary. Ward coordinators also work with local Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) to ensure everyone is registered to receive information from both them and the police. Watch coordinators are the next level down. They often look after a street or an area (I look after the Nightingale Estate). There exists a mixture and a wide variety of formats of watches in Redbridge, from the very large to the very small, from those who are tech savvy to those who prefer to play postman and deliver newsletters. Some watch coordinators have also started to use apps to communicate with their neighbours. However, the key point is this: watch coordinators are the only people in the organisation who can effectively reach our elderly and vulnerable residents. Often, these groups will not have access to computers, so it is important there is sufficient ‘face time’ to ensure they are not overlooked. It is one of the reasons why we have our watch meetings with the ward panel meetings on a quarterly basis, where everyone is invited to attend. NHW is a grassroots organisation and we are led by the wishes of our residents. We are not all about meetings, newsletters and committees, although there are wards in

Redbridge who like to run their watches like this, which is fine. Redbridge is a diverse borough and therefore requires diverse communication methods to reflect this – there is no one set formula. We are the eyes and ears of the community and have a partnership with the police and try to assist them with their challenging task of maintaining law and order in the borough. We are not the police nor are we replacing them. Crime is becoming more sophisticated and criminals now have a range of tools to commit their acts. Policing in this century has to rise to the challenge and the only way this can be done now is by acting on intelligence of what is going on in the borough. NHW is one reliable source where this information can be tapped into so that the police can act and help to reduce crime. The relationship between NHW and the police has slowly evolved, such that we are both important stakeholders in the fight against the proliferation of crime. The next Wanstead and Snaresbrook Safer Neighbourhood Team Ward Panel meeting will take place from 7pm at Wanstead House on 12 May. For more information, visit redbridgenhw.info

A nurse at the Front Dick Robinson will be telling the story of his great aunt – a nurse during the First World War – at a meeting of the East of London Family History Society at Wanstead Library this month

T

he part played by women in the First World War is often overlooked, for very understandable reasons; of course, it was the men who died and were wounded in their hundreds of thousands. However, sometimes a truly amazing story comes to light, and one of those is that of my great aunt, Edith Appleton, who served as a professional nurse in France throughout the war and often close to the front line. I knew Edie well as a child in the 1940s and 1950s, but it wasn’t until she died in 1958 that the diaries she wrote between 1914 and 1919 came to light. Her journal, written in the precious minutes off-duty from the daily pressure of caring for dying and wounded men, tells an extraordinary story. What lifts the diaries from an almost unendurable catalogue of horrors is Edie’s ability to switch from this grinding ghastliness to a joyous, exuberant appreciation of the natural beauty around her. She was a robust walker and lover of rugged coastlines, and whatever the season, every spare moment off-duty was used to tramp around the glorious countryside sketching the views, revelling either in summer flowers or wintry storms. During the five years she spent in France, Edie worked in a variety of locations: casualty clearing stations near the front line as well as base hospitals on the Normandy coast and in ambulance trains. When on the coast, and despite the dangers, she clearly longed to be back near the front. Edie mentions the names of over 200 of her patients and colleagues and the most rewarding aspect of making her diaries available has been making contact with some of the descendants of those

Nurse Edith Appleton OBE RRC (1877–1958)

mentioned. As you might imagine, some meetings over 100 years later have been very emotional, particularly where a named soldier died in her care. A book version of Edie’s journal was published in 2012 and I also launched a website, which includes information about Edie, old family photographs and copies of the many sketches she included in her journal. Do have a look and maybe you will recognise the name of a relative. My talk will be fully illustrated and, on this occasion, as I tell Edie’s story, I shall be accompanied by my daughter, Katie, who will read extracts from the diaries. In her late 30s, Katie is the same age as Edie was when in France. Dick’s talk will take place on 24 May from 7.30pm at Wanstead Library (visitors welcome; £1.50). 20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the fifth of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding looks at three current projects that are improving the local area

ince the birth of the Wanstead Society, we have always maintained a greenfingered presence around the local area. From planting trees on Christchurch Green, running Nightingale Green action days to tidying up Tarzy Wood, we have always contributed to the maintenance of our open spaces. This year, we are promoting three major projects being run by local residents, which we are involved in. Great British Spring Clean Organised by local people, this was meant to be a one-off activity where residents litter-picked George Green and its surrounds. However, this will now take place once every two months as the response was so good. We collected over 40 bags of litter at the beginning of March, removing dangerous plastics and waste that could have damaged wildlife. Since the removal of the old dog waste bins, many people have complained that Wanstead has been getting dirtier, so we decided to take direct action and do something about it. The next action day is on 6 May from 9.30am (meet on George Green). Woodland management of Tarzy Wood Tarzy Wood – the Epping Forest land by the War Memorial and Wanstead Church School – has long been a forgotten space filled with litter and invasive species, such as ivy. The aim of this project is to help manage the woodland by removing the litter and cutting back plants that are restricting the growth of trees and allowing light into the forest to promote the growth of native plants. This project has the full support of the Epping Forest conservators in opening up this area for community use, which also has the positive effect of reducing crime in the forest.

Community gardens at Wanstead and Snaresbrook Stations In the last few months, volunteers have taken on the maintenance of the community garden within Snaresbrook Station and the flower beds by Wanstead Station. Run by Marian Temple, this group aims to use neglected public spaces for native wildflowers, which otherwise would have been removed. The group meets at least once a month (visit wavidi.co/wcg). The Wanstead Society has for 20 years aimed to make good use of public land to grow native plants. We also maintain the Corner House garden and flower beds on the High Street – and all for free. We believe that every space, no matter how small, can make a positive difference to our community while encouraging wildlife. If you would like to help, please get in touch. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation that works to protect, preserve and improve the local area. Membership is £10 per household per year. A capital ground for sport Local historians Mark Gorman and Peter Williams take a look back at over 150 years of sport, leisure and entertainment on Wanstead Flats

T

he 1878 Epping Forest Act was a watershed moment, not only in our local but also national history. The Act was the first declaration of a right for the general public to use an open space for recreation and enjoyment, and marked the end of decades of fierce struggles between landlords wanting to enclose and develop forest lands and those determined to keep them open. The Act ensured forest lands would remain open to the public, and gave responsibility for management to the City of London. Throughout the 19th century, Epping Forest was often called ‘the people’s playground’, and the southern end of the forest, being closest to London, became a well-known venue for sports and other leisure activities, both legal and illicit. Foot races and boxing were particularly popular, attracting large crowds to places such as Wanstead Flats, and large stakes were gambled on results, beyond the reach

Mark and Peter will be talking about the history of Wanstead Flats at a Leyton and Leytonstone Historical Society event on 17 May from 7.45pm at St John’s Church hall, Leytonstone High Road. For more information, call 020 8558 5491

May 2017 of the recently-formed Metropolitan Police. Fairs and circuses were regular events, and Wanstead Flats’ Easter fair was a great meeting place for all the showmen of England before they went their separate ways for the summer season. The fairs attracted east Londoners in their thousands, offering a variety of attractions, from a trip through the Channel Tunnel (nearly a century before the actual tunnel opened) in “a real train” to the more dubious pleasures of “Paris by Night”. Epping Forest also played an important part in the development of football, which started life as an organised sport in the 1860s. One of the earliest clubs playing to formal rules was Forest FC, founded in 1859 by boys from Forest School, and in its early years, playing on land owned by the Earl of Mornington at Snaresbrook. In the next two decades, football was transformed into the country’s dominant sport, and east London teams came out to the forest to play local clubs on Wanstead Flats. The popularity of football grew ever greater, and by the 1930s thousands of players and

67

spectators were thronging to watch matches on the fringes of Epping Forest. The open spaces of the forest also attracted a variety of other activities; some, such as model yacht racing on the forest ponds and model aeroplane flying, were innocent pastimes. Others were more nefarious, and one report of 1901 described Wanstead Flats as “a place of abominations by day and night”. In the early days of its management, the City of London tried to make the southern forest a far more park-like place than it is today, planting avenues of trees and placing benches by ornamental lakes. One avenue on Wanstead Flats became known as the ‘monkey parade’, referring to the habit of teenagers wanting to see and be seen in their Sunday best on an evening stroll under the trees. These wide and varied uses of the unique open spaces of Epping Forest mean that the popularity of this east Londoners’ playground continues to this day.

Life, death and mon£y A recent judgment of the Supreme Court, which marks the end of a protracted dispute, is highly significant for those making their wills and their beneficiaries, says Beverley Browne of solicitors Wiseman Lee

T

he case in question began life as Ilott vs Mitson and was the first claim brought under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 to have reached the Supreme Court. Acting as a check on complete testamentary freedom, the 1975 Act allows certain family members, together with others who were being maintained by the deceased person at the time of death, to argue that insufficient provision has been made for them. In 2007 Heather Ilott applied to the County Court under the 1975 Act for reasonable financial provision to be made for her from her mother’s estate. Mrs Ilott had been cut out of her mother’s will, the two women having been estranged for many years. Instead, the deceased, Mrs Melita Jackson, had left her entire estate worth just under £500,000 to three animal charities. The charities opposed Mrs Ilott’s claim. The District Judge awarded Mrs Ilott £50,000 on the basis that her mother had acted in an unreasonable, capricious and harsh way towards her daughter, such that an award was justified. Mrs Ilott appealed to the High Court for an increased award and, having failed, then appealed on two further occasions to the Court of Appeal. On the second of these appeals Mrs Ilott was successful, and in 2015 the award was increased to £143,000 to allow Mrs Ilott to purchase her housing association home and also gave her an option to take an additional capital sum of £20,000, from which further income needs could be met. On an appeal by the charities, the case was heard by the Supreme Court on 12 December 2016. Allowing the appeal, the Supreme Court rejected the Court of Appeal’s criticisms of the initial judgment and restored the award of £50,000. The Court held that Mrs Jackson had clearly intended to benefit the charities

by naming them in her will and her wishes were part of the circumstances of the case. They did not cease to matter just because Mrs Ilott could demonstrate financial need. Nor did the charities need to justify their own needs – what counted was that Mrs Jackson had chosen to benefit them. The Supreme Court affirmed existing case law in finding that, although the concept of maintenance is broad, it should be based on provision for everyday expenses. The award of £50,000 was meant to enable Mrs Ilott to purchase household items, and the Court of Appeal had erred in its approach by making an outright award of a sum sufficient to enable Mrs Ilott to purchase her house. The Supreme Court has confirmed that testamentary freedom remains a key principle of English law. The judgment serves to reinforce the position as it had been understood prior to Ilott vs Mitson: adult children who are living independently of their parents will struggle to persuade a court that a wish on the part of their parents to disinherit them in favour of others should be overridden. Unravelling circles Andy Thomas, a leading researcher into unexplained mysteries, will be exploring the extraordinary phenomenon of crop circles at this month’s meeting of the Wanstead Park Women’s Club

T

he crop circle mystery is a persistent and ever-controversial part of the English countryside – and countries beyond. Each year sees a new collection of beautiful shapes in the fields, always reviving arguments about whether they are man-made art or something stranger. Although the West Country is best known for its many crop circles, many other counties have them. People often think crop circles have gone away because the media barely reports them, but they are still appearing and still astonishing people with their remarkable geometric complexity. For every crop circle that might be made by people, there are others that simply cannot be dismissed so easily. Many have appeared within seconds in front of people’s eyes, while others see aerial lights in their vicinity, and there is evidence of biological anomalies occurring in many of them – something never found in man-made circles. Whether the more mysterious patterns are made by other intelligences, natural forces, psychic forces or all or none of these is still hotly debated, but the effect they have had on people has been profound. Many have been moved very deeply by the sheer beauty of the designs, and for that alone we ought to be grateful. Circular facts and figures: zz England receives many crop circles, but Germany, Italy and The Netherlands also have high numbers. Other nations, such as Canada, Australia, Brazil, Russia, China and the Czech Republic, have also reported formations. Surprisingly (for its size), the USA only receives a handful each year.

zz The earliest known crop circle is depicted in a woodcut from 1678. zz The oldest photo of a crop circle is from 1932. zz There have been approaching 10,000 recorded crop formations to date. zz There are around 150 eyewitness reports (and videos) of people watching circles appear in front of their eyes within seconds. zz Crop circles can appear by day or night, often within very short time frames, yet an average man-made formation can take from six to nine hours for a team to create. zz The longest recorded formation, at Etchilhampton, Wiltshire in 1996, measured 4,100 feet in length. Andy’s talk will take place on 15 May from 8pm at Aldersbrook Bowls Club (visitors: £2; booking required). Call 020 8532 9093 For more information on crop circles and other mysteries, visit truthagenda.org
