Welcome... Keeping historic memories alive is a battle against time and apathy. With passing generations, changing attitudes and changing land uses, it's all to easy for memories to fade. There is nothing we can do about the passage of time, but overcoming apathy is one battle that can be won, if fought with passion. Perhaps apathy is too strong a word. It suggests a lack of interest in the subject, whatever that may be, when in fact it may just be an ignorance to the subject's very existence. If you don't know you don't know something, it's hard to learn about it. In the context of local history, these 'unknown unknowns' are important stories to be told if we are to develop and maintain a sense of community. Some stories from history are very well known, having been told by many different people over time. Richard III, King of England from 1483 to 1485, is a case in point. His remains were recently reburied at Leicester Cathedral – having been unearthed in a car park in 2012 – and the story of his accession to the throne is one of greed, lust, betrayal and murder. It is a story that has been told and retold over many centuries, adapted and embellished by playwrights and actors, from William Shakespeare in 1592 to Laurence Olivier in 1955. Of course, it's easy to highlight popular tales of national importance and to recount the lessons they impart. Less easy, however, is to educate ourselves on the more localised narratives from our past, such as the chronicles of Wanstead's once-popular cinema. The history of a high street cinema is certainly more obscure than the life and times of a king still being talked about more than 500 years after his death, but it's important for the same reasons: to understand our heritage, discover human connections through time and make links between the past and present. For anyone living here less than 60 years, you could be forgiven for being unaware that such an amenity ever existed in Wanstead… the last screening at the Wanstead Kinema, as it was known, was Olivier's Richard III. Lee Marquis, Editor

Local artist's book to be won in competition promoting trail A unique work of art in the form of a book is being offered as a prize by organisers of this year's environment-themed Art Trail Wanstead. The book, Plasticseam by Kathy Taylor, imagines a time in the future when archeologists excavate a seam in the earth's crust dating from 1950 to 2050 and explores what they make of their findings. Entrants are required to identify the famous source of the following quote: "Stable prosperity can be achieved throughout

the world, provided the environment is nurtured and safeguarded. Protecting this

balance of nature is therefore one of the great challenges of the late 20th century". The winner will be

drawn at random from all correct entries received by 30 May. Email entries to ksmtaylor@me.com

A bridge over River Roding

Sustainable travel grants

Improvements are set to be made to open spaces along the River Roding, following £105,000 of funding from the Mayor of London's Big Green Fund. The Roding Valley through Wanstead project, which was one of seven initiatives across London put to a public vote, is now set to revitalise and enhance the ecology and aesthetics of the area. Among the improvements will be the reopening of the Coronation Bridge, the main access point into Wanstead Park for residents living east of the A406.

A scheme that offers up to £7,000 of funding for projects that promote sustainable travel has been launched by Redbridge Council as part of its efforts to improve air quality and reduce noise. Funded by TfL, the Community and Local Business Active Travel Grant hopes to encourage community groups or local businesses to think about what they could do to increase walking or cycling locally, and to apply for funding to implement their ideas. Applications must be submitted by 13 May. Visit wavidi.com/wlk

Every little helps: Tesco boost for playground campaign

Tesco Express Wanstead staff present a cheque at the playground

Wanstead's cinema will be remembered at an event at Wanstead Library this month. Located at 157 High Street, next to The George, the venue opened in 1913 as the Wanstead Empire, showing silent movies until 1929, when it was renamed Wanstead Kinema.

The last screening was Richard III on 26 October 1956. The talk by Doreen Golding of the Wanstead Historical Society, who worked in the building from 1968 to 2000 when it was a bingo hall and health club, will take place on 21 May. Call 07949 026 212

Wanstead Playground Association's appeal to renovate the playground on Christchurch Green has continued to enjoy success, receiving a donation of £2,710 from Tesco Express Wanstead last month, enough to fund a new set of swings. The campaign – which

has since become a registered charity – has now entered its second phase of fundraising after achieving its initial target of £13,600. A black tie gala dinner and silent auction will take place at Wanstead Golf Club on 20 June (tickets: £50). Visit wavidi.com/wpagala

In the 16th of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to Marian Temple

Angels in Wanstead

Marian Temple To advertise, please call 020 8819 6645 or visit www.wansteadvillagedirectory.com

May 2015

"M

y generation were brought up to pay their taxes and expect the council to do everything for them. It doesn't work well because the council can't be everywhere and it breeds an unfortunate mindset," explained guerrilla gardener Marian Temple. Marian is the driving force behind Wanstead Community Gardeners, and I decided she should be this month's Angel after watching the flowerbeds around Wanstead Station spring into life. It's difficult to say when Marian's work evolved from simple guerrilla gardening to community gardening. Certainly, the first changes she made were at the Corner House 12 years ago. Since then, one of the people whose enthusiasm in guerrilla gardening she ignited started planting the little plots by the motorway wall towards Leytonstone and this year, her work has expanded to South Woodford as well. Marian's passion is providing beautiful, sustainable cottage gardens in small pieces of forgotten land all over the area. She does it for free – even the Corner House. Money just doesn't come into the equation. She explained: "I've never been a gardener. My mother was a cottage-style gardener and that's the only style I'm interested in. I started with the Corner House garden. I was aware of it on the High Street before then and knew it could be lovely – it's a wonderful spot – but that was when I was working and I didn't have time. Then 12 years ago, I decided to do something about it. Through the Wanstead Society, I approached the council and asked permission to do the garden. They were fine about it, which is great because some councils wouldn't be. So we got a group of volunteers to take it on, got rid of the waist-high weeds and the rubbish and planted loads of stuff. Most was from my own garden." It was a very good learning curve. It taught Marian what you can plant in public spaces and how to arrange the planting. Over time, she learned what people will lean over and snap off or take, what works well in a public garden and what is going to disappear. She told me that since snapping a beautiful flower off is human nature, the best way to prevent it is to plant the more tempting plants far enough back so they can't be casually reached. Now, volunteers join

in to plant new gardens and replant the old, and many plants are overwintered in peoples' homes. The geraniums are overwintered inside Wanstead Station. Apparently, the station staff have become quite enthusiastic about the whole thing. Despite initial resistance, she and the working party now do five beds on Wanstead High Street, a little bit of ground in Snaresbrook on the wall behind the small cottage that used to be an office and the side and back of the Corner House. Other people have taken it further. Volunteers talk to Marian about what will and will not work and then take on other little plots of abandoned land in the community. Listening to her, it seems she can be persuaded – eventually – to tend any plot, provided it's not private and that enough members of the public walk past and can benefit from it. "If you understand them [the plants] they will thrive. You consider their needs. You don't put them where you want them to be, or force them in conditions you like, but consider what makes them do best. Some like full sun, some like shade, it's about understanding their needs. Then they'll improve over time and become really rewarding." Sounds to me that's how people thrive too. For more information on Wanstead's community gardening activities, email mariantemple43@gmail.com To nominate someone for an Angels in Wanstead article, visit wavidi.com/aiw or leave a message for Carole at The Larder, 39 High Street, Wanstead.

Trail turns green Artist Kathy Taylor put forward 'We are the Environment' as the main theme for this year's Art Trail Wanstead. As artists consider their submissions, Kathy explains what she hopes the theme will achieve

T

his year's Art Trail theme 'We are the Environment' is a great opportunity for local artists to express something about our brilliantly beautiful, if struggling, environment. This might, for example, be an appreciation of its wonder, or something to raise awareness of our need to care for it. I got the idea for the title when thinking about what I can do personally to reduce my carbon footprint. I noticed that people often feel disassociated from, and probably terrified of, the prediction of catastrophic climate change, and therefore find it hard to act. 'We are the Environment' is saying that we are part of it, we depend on it, we can do something and it can be fun and fulfilling in the process. This year is significant, because in December the UN is hosting its 20th Climate Change Conference in Paris to seek commitments to reduce carbon emissions from all the nations attending. In the face of what may seem like constant bad news and the need to panic, there are hopeful actions taking place locally and nationally. Many people are moving towards more sustainable lifestyles that prioritise connections with others and the earth. In Wanstead, allotments are flourishing, as is the farmers' market on the High Street every month. Gardeners are taking to the streets to plant neglected flower beds and tree pits with flowers for people and bees. Our High Street is thriving and we now even have a fish shop selling sustainable fish. Nationally, more than half a million homes have installed solar panels, with capacity doubling between 2013 and 2014. This autumn, following the lead of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, England will introduce a 5p charge on plastic bags for larger businesses with the aim of reducing the devastating impact of plastic bag waste on the environment. Current national usage in England

Plastic River by Kathy Taylor

is over 8 billion bags per year, or an average of 130 bags per person. The changes to the law elsewhere have made a huge positive difference to the number of bags used and thrown away. Perhaps our smaller local shops can be persuaded to encourage reduced consumption of single-use bags too, by not automatically handing them out, offering rewards or alternative bags that can be reused? Whatever it is you want to create, please do join in and follow this year's trail theme. 'We are the Environment' provides a huge range of possibilities for artistic expression. We will be asking local shops and businesses once again to display art for the trail and in return, we hope to encourage local shopping habits in Wanstead, a sustainable act in itself. I hope it will also encourage local businesses to think of and make some changes for a more sustainable future too. Art Trail Wanstead will take place from 5 to 20 September. To participate, artists must become members of the organising Art Group Wanstead, which is free to join. Visit artgroupwanstead.com

Standard signals The East London Branch of the Royal Signals Association, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, had a new standard dedicated at St Mary's Church in Wanstead last month. Alan Turner reports

T

© David Tyrrell

he East London Branch of the Royal Signals Association (RSA), which mainly covers the east London and south-east Essex areas, retired its standard that has been in use for approximately 60 years and had a new one dedicated in a service at St Mary's Church, Wanstead last month.

Apart from the families of members of the RSA, a number of dignitaries attended the service, including the Mayor of Waltham Forest and Deputy Mayor of Havering. The Mayor and Mayoress of Redbridge were due to attend, but sent late apologies due to a family bereavement. Past and present Deputy Lieutenants of Redbridge were present, along with a number of serving soldiers from Blandford, some TA soldiers and cadets from Whipps Cross and Chelsea Pensioners from the Royal Hospital. Standards from other RSA branches, plus local organisations including SSAFA and RBL, were also present for the service. Music was provided by the Royal Yeomanry Band and St Mary's choir. The Royal Corps of Signals was formed from the Signals Branch of the Royal Engineers in the early 1920s and shortly after its formation His Majesty King George V granted it the Royal title. What was the Royal Engineers Old Comrades Association Signals Branch became the RSA. The purpose of the Association was, and still is, to provide support and assistance to past and present signallers and their dependants who are in need. It also provides contact between the serving Corps and the retired signallers. In 1925, members of 54th Div Signal Regt formed a Regimental Branch, known as the East London Branch, Royal Signals Association, and held their meetings at the Territorial Army Centre (TAC) in Stratford. During the Second World War, branch meetings were suspended and recommenced in

© Alan Farthing

The service, attended by 120 people, was jointly led by the Rector, Rev Liz Horwell and visiting exPadre Rev David Eaton, who had previously been associated with a local TA Signal Regiment.

1948 at TAC Wanstead, which had become the Regimental HQ of 2/20 Signal Regt (V), which became 36 (E) Signal Regt (V) in 1967. In 1991, the Branch moved its meeting place to the TAC in Ilford and its close bond with 36 Signal Regt was maintained until that unit disbanded in 2010. The Branch continues to meet and hold functions at the now renamed Army Reserve Centre in Ilford, hosted by 217 (Field Squadron) EOD, Royal Engineers. This year is the 90th anniversary of the forming of the Branch and it makes the Branch the second oldest RSA Branch in the country. We have members of the Branch, young and old, who come from far and near, such as Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Kent, Suffolk and the local London boroughs to attend Branch functions. There are Branch members still serving with 71st Signal Regiment and a Yeomen Warder at the Tower of London. One of our oldest regular attending members is a Normandy Veteran. Anyone who has served or is serving with The Royal Corps of Signals can join the RSA. For more information, call 020 8220 6319

Law of the landlord It is essential that anyone deciding to become a landlord understands the full force of the law they will face for any breach of regulation, says Paul Kaufman, a consultant at local solicitors Wiseman Lee

A

re you tempted to become a buy-to-let landlord? Many have been lured to do so by easy mortgages, cheap interest rates and expectation of income combined with strong capital growth. While the prospect of owning their own home recedes for the younger generation, the new pensions regime will no doubt spur many older people to cash in and have a go. However, as the private rented sector has burgeoned, so local authorities have, quite rightly, become more proactive in enforcing planning and safety regulations. The local Magistrates Courts, and increasingly the Crown Courts, deal regularly with large numbers of landlords subject to prosecution for a wide range of offences. The law makes no distinction between a professional and an amateur landlord. Every landlord is, by definition, running a business and is expected to adhere to the strict professional standards required of such. Fines are, therefore, generally imposed at the higher level typical of commercial prosecutions. One development that reflects the importance attached to professionalising and regulating the industry is the requirement in certain boroughs that landlords hold a licence. In 2013, Newham became the first authority in London to introduce such a scheme and many others have followed suit. The maximum fine for not having a licence is £20,000. Fines of up to £10,000 for a first offence have been imposed locally. There is also power to claw back any rent received while unlicensed. Another concern is regulation of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). HMOs present a particular risk in terms of fire safety, hygiene and general condition. HMO regulations impose strict standards. It is not uncommon for magistrates to be presented with stomach-churning pictures of greasy ovens, filthy toilets and rubbish-strewn gardens. Prosecutions can also be brought where there are just a couple of loose tiles or a damaged work surface in the kitchen. Landlords

cannot escape responsibility simply by blaming the condition on the tenants. Typically, the local authority will prosecute for multiple offences, and for each breach the fine is up to £5,000. HMOs also risk degrading an area, with increased noise, rubbish and anti-social behaviour. Consequently, local authorities will bring enforcement proceedings to ensure planning regulations are complied with. Landlords fail to comply with these at their peril. Breach of an Enforcement Notice carries a fine of up to £20,000 in the Magistrates Court, or an unlimited fine in the Crown Court. Councils are also incentivised to apply for a Confiscation Order. Under agreements with the Home Office, they will typically be entitled to around a third of any amount ordered. Under this rapidly developing area of case law, courts can confiscate the entire rental received in breach of a notice, without making any allowance for the overheads involved in providing the accommodation. Last November, in a case prosecuted by Islington Council, Blackfriars Crown Court fined a landlord £190,000 for one offence of renting out flats in breach of an Enforcement Notice, and ordered confiscation of £76,000 in respect of the rent received. Dangerous dogs PCSO Kelly Sanger of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team highlights some of the important aspects of the Dangerous Dogs Act, which was updated last year

T

he Dangerous Dogs Act was amended in England and Wales on 13 May 2014. The law applies to all dog owners and to any dog, no matter what size or breed, from a chihuahua to a pit bull terrier. The law still bans ownership of the following breeds: American pit bull terriers, Japanese tosas, dogo Argentino and the fila Brasileiro, unless special measures are put in place, such as registering, tattooing and microchipping. It is illegal to sell, give away, breed or abandon any dog from these four banned breeds. Section 3 of the Act applies to every dog owner in England and Wales. Under this section, it is a criminal offence for any person in charge of a dog to allow it to be 'dangerously out of control' in a public place. Not many dog owners are aware that this law still applies, even if the dog does not bite, but a person has grounds to believe that the dog may cause them injury. It is important to remember this when we look into the changes of the Dangerous Dogs Act. While owners need to be fully aware of all the changes, the biggest difference is the Act now also covers incidents on private property, in addition to public spaces. This includes your own house and both front and back gardens. Most importantly, you should consider the safety of visitors to your property. With numerous Royal Mail and other delivery services employees having been injured through dog bites, the Communication Workers Union campaigned for several years for the Dangerous Dogs Act to include private property. Up until this change in the law, there was no legislation that enabled action to be taken to ensure their safety. You need to make sure that any visitor can safely access your front door without encountering your dog. If the person attacked is a burglar or trespasser, your dog may not be considered dangerously out of control if it is in a building that is your private dwelling at the time of the

attack. However, this does not cover incidents in your back or front garden, so all dog owners should ensure that all areas of their gardens, where their dogs could encounter unexpected visitors, are secure. This change in legislation should be a wake up call to all dog owners to ensure their dogs are under control when they open their door, otherwise they risk committing a criminal offence. It is not unusual for a dog to be reactive to visitors at the door, so if your dog is like this, you need to put together a plan of how to manage that situation. The easiest thing to do is to shut your dog in another room or install a baby gate, stopping the dog having access to the door. If this is not an option, then you may wish to consider the services of a qualified dog behaviourist or trainer, who will be able to assist you in teaching your dog some new behaviours around the door. For more information on dangerous dogs, call 020 8478 4679 The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. Vote for Matthew Scott on 7 May

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Leyton and Wanstead Email: matthew.scott@leytonandwanstead.co.uk | Telephone: 020 8551 4333

It would be an honour and a privilege to be elected as your local MP. I’d speak up on behalf of all the residents of Leyton and Wanstead, not vested interests or Unions. I’ll work hard to increase school places, get better access to GP appointments and NHS services, help create jobs and back business owners. Nationally, the Conservatives will cut taxes for lower and middle earners, support pensioners, make our benefits system fairer, go further on immigration and hold an EU referendum by 2017. This is the most important General Election in a generation – every vote will matter. I hope that I can count on yours on Thursday 7 May.

Redbridge at 50 A new small display at Redbridge Museum explores why the London Borough of Redbridge was created in 1965 and how names and boundaries shape our lives. Museum Assistant Alex Lyons reports

F

rom 1894 until 1934, Wanstead had its own Urban District Council. In 1934, it joined with Woodford Council and in 1937 the Borough of Wanstead and Woodford was formed. For this occasion, Winston Churchill MP presented the new borough with a grand ceremonial mace, which bears the borough's crest and is now on display at Redbridge Museum, along with other mayoral items. In 1961, the government decided to reorganise London's local government by decreasing the number of boroughs from 92 to 32 through amalgamation. Some outer boroughs, like Wanstead and Woodford and Ilford, were traditionally part of Essex, but became part of the Greater London Council under the new system. There was considerable discussion how best to create these boroughs. Initially, the government wanted Wanstead and Woodford to merge with Walthamstow. Many people of Wanstead liked this option, as it was a neighbouring area that had some similarities. During the decision-making process, the Woodford Times newspaper ran a competition to find the new name of the borough: "Such flowers of the English language as 'Chiglewanwood' and even – rather daring – 'Wanton', the result of a hybridisation between Wanstead and Leyton… Another hybrid name which has a homely sound was 'Wilfred', if the borough was amalgamated with Ilford." (Woodford Times, 9 February 1962) However, it was eventually settled that Woodford and Wanstead would merge with the Borough of Ilford to fit in with the government's guideline that each borough should have a population of around 300,000. The new borough was to be known symbolically as 'Redbridge' after the bridge (originally made of red brick) that crossed over the River Roding and physically joined Wanstead and Woodford to Ilford. This decision was met with mixed feelings. One disgruntled Wanstead and Woodford Borough

A photo from the 1920s of the red bridge across the River Roding

councillor was worried that Ilford would take over the running of the new borough and that the smaller half would go "cap in hand as a suitor to Ilford." He went on: "I cannot see we have ever had a great deal to do with Ilford… we would be accepted as blisters on the side of what would have been the County Borough of Ilford." (Report from a Council meeting, Woodford Times, 9 March 1962). Despite this opposition, on the official day of the merger, 1 April 1965, a more positive sentiment was expressed: "Despite fears raised frequently… that Redbridge would be a take-over bid by Ilford, everything points to a contented marriage." (Wanstead and Woodford Guardian, 2 April 1965). The display also explores how local places got their names. The first record of Wanstead is from a map of 1055, where it was called 'Wænstede'. 'Stead' means place, whilst 'Wæn' refers to either 'mound' or 'wagon'. Therefore, the name either means 'place near the mound' or 'place where the wagons are kept'. Other boundaries explored include physical, religious, political and postcode areas, which all impact on our lives today. What’s in a Name? 50 Years of Redbridge is free to attend and runs until 27 June at Redbridge Museum in Ilford (open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and to 4pm on Saturday). Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the second of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, David Tyrrell talks about his varied photography career and his love of travel

I

Š David Tyrrell

lived in Putney for the first nine years of my life and then my family moved to Harlow New Town (as it was called then). My interest in photography developed (pun intended) when I was about 15. I had taken shots of the air display at North Weald and tried to process the black and white film in my bedroom cupboard. I left school and started work as an apprentice cabinet maker. After six months of cleaning out glue pots (which stunk of rotting fish) I decided this was not for me. By chance, the local camera shop was looking for a shop assistant. I successfully applied and for the next four years, I learnt everything, from selling cameras to taking wedding photographs and processing films. For a few years, I worked outside of photography, but re-entered the profession when I became darkroom manager at a photographic studio in South Woodford. Whilst there, I attended college for several years gaining my academic qualifications. I also gained Associate distinctions with both the British Institute of Professional Photographers and the Master Photographers Association. I acquired the skills of commercial photography and was also lucky enough to be chosen as one of three credited photographers to photograph recipients of an honour at Buckingham Palace. Eventually, I opened my own studio in Waltham Abbey, covering family portraits, weddings and commercial photography for both local and international companies. However, after 27 years of working, my wife and I decided to take a break. So, on the 31 December 2000, we boarded a plane to Asia for three months. Those three months turned into six years of travelling. We have now resettled in Wanstead. I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society as I love photography and wanted to meet like-minded people. I shoot most subjects, from action to landscapes, close-ups of insects and the night sky.

Just add water In the third of a series of articles exploring local biodiversity, Tim Harris of the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group takes a look at three of our local amphibious friends

U

nlike the creatures of my last two columns, this month I'm focusing on altogether less obvious animals, our local amphibians. Partly because of our northerly latitude, and partly due to our island situation, the UK does not have a varied amphibian fauna, and some of the handful of species that do live here are decidedly rare, the great crested newt and natterjack toad, for example. Nowadays, the only amphibians we can expect to find around Wanstead are the common frog, common toad and smooth newt. The amphibian that people are most likely to have encountered is the common frog. Its numbers have declined nationally as farm ponds have been drained and disease has also taken a toll, but in our area it still is common. Like other amphibians, it needs water for breeding, but otherwise is at home in any garden or open space where it can hunt for insects, slugs and worms. Even tiny garden ponds are suitable for breeding. A friend of mine found frogspawn in a washing-up bowl she had left outside that had filled with rainwater, and when I moved into my house on the Lakehouse estate, I found a frog living in the damp cellar. Breeding female frogs lay up to 2,000 eggs in January, February or March, and these are immediately fertilised by a male. Sometimes, several frogs may lay their eggs at the same place, so there may be a large mass of gelatinous spawn containing up to 25,000 eggs, only a tiny proportion of which will eventually become

adults. People wonder why dead frogs may be found near the spawn; they sometimes simply drop dead from exhaustion, although frogs are also vulnerable to predators when mating. If they are not eaten, eggs develop into tadpoles within four weeks, and these in turn transform into tiny froglets, the hind legs growing before the front legs. The froglets leave their natal pool in the summer and spend most of the next two or three years out of the water, searching for food (mainly at night) on lawns, under bushes and on waste ground, just like the adults. When the weather turns cold in late autumn, frogs slow their metabolism down and bury themselves under leaf litter, in mud at the bottom of ditches or in the bottom of ponds. In late winter, the whole cycle begins again. The lifestyle of common toads is similar, but there are important differences in appearance and behaviour. For a start, toads have a rougher, 'warty' skin, and they crawl rather than hop as frogs do. The females lay eggs in March and April, and these are laid in long strings wound around aquatic vegetation, rather than clumps floating on the water. Female toads lay up to 4,000 eggs, but usually no more than five per cent of these survive. Like frogs, most of the year is spent outside of water, but water is vital to the species' ability to breed. In fact, so important is the wet

ditch, stream or pool where a toad first emerged from its egg that it will return there to breed. On warm nights in early spring, hundreds of toads may travel hundreds of metres to get back to their natal pond, crossing gardens and even busy roads en route. Frogs and toads have suffered major declines in their populations, but there are several things we can do to help them out. Digging a pond in the back garden is the best way to encourage more to breed. Also, take care when mowing the lawn in summer and early autumn when more amphibians will be out in search of food. And be careful not to drive over toads crossing the road in early spring. Much easier to overlook, but probably present in most clean ponds in our area, is the smooth newt. They also need freshwater for the breeding part of their life cycle but are happy in cool, moist environments the rest of the year. Adults are grey and brown and grow to 10 centimetres in length. The males have a wavy crest along their back in the breeding season, with an orange or yellow belly, usually with black spots. Usually, newts are most active at dawn and dusk and are virtually impossible to see when out of water. However, they are much easier to watch when they return to water in the spring and the males perform their courtship dance. The females lay their eggs individually on the stems and leaves of aquatic vegetation and the larvae hatch after two to four weeks. Unlike frogs and toads, they grow their front legs first. The young newts, called efts, leave their birth pond in the summer, after they have lost their gills. For the next few months at least, they forsake aquatic invertebrate prey for the insects and slugs they find in back gardens, parkland and waste ground. As the weather gets cooler in autumn, they become less and less active and eventually hibernate under wood and stones, in compost heaps or back in a pond. They are usually sexually mature by the age of three years. Watching amphibians is not often easy and the two main requirements are patience and fresh water. Please don't interfere with the animals, however, and certainly don't remove them from their pond. All three species have declined dramatically so they need all the help they can get.

Singing Out Since winning the British Cheese Board's competition for a National Anthem to Cheddar in 2012, members of Wanstead's Upbeat Choir have continued to enjoy singing success. Tim Sutton reports

S

ince my last article in the Wanstead Village Directory in August 2012, choral singing has gripped the British imagination in a way no-one could have ever predicted. Thanks to the efforts of Gareth Malone and other inspirational figures, more people than ever before are joining singing groups. Despite this, I often hear people say that they would love to join a choir but are worried that they won't be good enough. So we try to make Upbeat Choir as welcoming a place as possible, catering to singers of all abilities. I feel very lucky that in three years we have grown into a highly sociable environment and that amazing opportunities keep coming our way. Since we started, we've won the British Cheese Board's competition for a National Anthem to Cheddar, sung for the Olympic Torch Ceremony and performed at RAF Hendon, the Watford Colosseum and London's famous South Bank Centre. One of our most exciting opportunities came out of the blue last autumn, when Upbeat was invited to be the featured choir in a new musical commission by award-winning composer Gwyneth Herbert and writer Mel Brimfield. The piece was called The Palace That Joan Built, and it celebrated the 100th birthday of revolutionary theatre director Joan Littlewood and her vision of Fun Palaces where people throughout the community could come together to interact and create. The commission came from Art on the Underground, a division of Transport for London, and was performed to great acclaim at Stratford Station last October, just across from the legendary Stratford East Theatre Royal, where Littlewood made such theatre classics as Oh! What a Lovely War, Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be and A Taste of Honey. The musical ensemble was made up of Gwyneth Herbert, her orchestra, the choir and a full brass band. The occasion itself was a big success, but there was more to come: the second stage of the project involved making a film of Gwyneth and Mel's work, with

Upbeat Choir performing at Stratford last year

Upbeat's singers taking acting roles in a cockney knees-up, recorded in the Betsey Trotwood pub in Farringdon. The film première took place at Stratford Picture House on 29 April. I'm so thrilled that our singers continue to benefit from such quirky and stimulating projects. It confounds all expectations of what a community choir ought to look like. I myself am no longer conducting the choir (though I do pop in from time to time) as I'm currently the Musical Director on the West End musical Memphis at the Shaftesbury Theatre. I'm very pleased to have been able to hand the baton on to the vibrant young conductor Adam Saunders, a protégé of celebrated choral expert Pete Churchill. Adam is taking the choir in wonderful new directions and bringing in repertoire from the worlds of jazz, funk and soul. So if you've always wanted to join a choir but been afraid to ask, take a deep breath and go for it – I promise you won't regret it. Upbeat Choir meets on Tuesday evenings from 8pm to 9.30pm at Wanstead House, 21 The Green. Singers of all abilities from the age of 16 upwards are welcome to attend. 57

Male singers welcome

Upbeat is a community choir open to anyone aged 16 or over. We sing everything from pop to classical, world to folk. In 2012 we sang at Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Watford Colosseum, performed for the Olympic Torch Procession at Valentines Mansion, and won a national competition for the best National Anthem to Cheddar! Upbeat offers fantastic opportunities to develop your voice and your confidence, to meet new people and to sing in exciting places. Don't worry if you think you can't sing, Upbeat is a warm and welcoming environment where you'll have a chance to learn the ropes. No audition is required, and you don't need to read music. We rehearse on Tuesdays, 8pm during term time at Wanstead House, 21 The Green.

he first time I was in a dance production I was dressed up as a prawn – in Alice in Wonderland! I imagine our dance school needed to create some new roles to accommodate us enthusiastic seven-yearolds. I also think that my mum might have made the costume, as she was and still is, an expert with the needle. Born in the early 1980s and brought up in Hertfordshire, we would go to Dad's 'Trad Jazz' gigs when I was young. He taught me a lot about rhythm and encouraged me to have piano lessons. I had also been having ballet lessons from the age of three, in an attempt by my parents to try to use up some of my energy. I was then, and still am to this day, a pretty much full on, non-stop person.

I had fun choreographing my friends at home with Top of the Pops and as a kid I was always the last one to be dragged kicking and screaming off the dance floor at parties. And now I waltz round the kitchen with my 94-year-old greataunt. She's an amazingly energetic woman – maybe it runs in the family. At A Level, a teacher told me that I should pursue dance as a subject through university. I decided to trust her judgement as she gave me so much confidence, and I got a 2:1 in Contemporary Dance Studies at Leicester De Montfort University, then spent a wonderful year at Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Music and Dance. Contemporary is definitely my favourite, especially the wonderfully expressive and expansive style of José Limón.

Wanstead stories Alison Brewerton The Love of Dance

After uni, I started to teach contemporary and jazz, street and baby ballet at local dance schools. Then I learned to teach salsa and worked for a company that taught beginner ballroom. Some couples then asked if I could choreograph the first dance for their wedding. I moved to Wanstead in 2009 and started dance classes for adults and teenagers at Wanstead House. As interest grew, more couples and groups of 'non-dancers' were booking me to teach and choreograph a fun routine for them to perform at social events. I realised there was a market to make this into a business, teaching diverse styles, from hip hop to the foxtrot. The business has evolved so that I also provide teachers and entertainment for events, but I still

have fun working with clients. Watching them improve from their self-perceived initial 'failure' to get the basic step, through to seeing their joy at mastering the whole piece, is wonderful. Sitting comfortably? Ahead of an Alexander Technique day at Wanstead House this month, author and yoga teacher Tony Cranston explains who Alexander is and why you should sit up straight to read this

M

y first experience with the Alexander Technique was with a student of my yoga tai chi classes over 20 years ago, who was a teacher and showed my class a little exercise for the head and neck. I could instantly see the benefit and I was hooked and then trained. Its impact on my health, exercise, teaching and sense of well-being and outlook has been immense. Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869 to 1955) was a Tasmanian-born Australian actor. The eighth son, he moved with his family to Melbourne, the home of the theatre. There he became a popular major star, working day and night until he began to lose his voice. No doctor or wise woman could cure him, so he decided, as the story goes, to work out what he was doing to himself and find the cause of his problems, which surfaced only when acting. Thus began his voyage of discovery about our human body and the things we do to it, and that almost all of our aches and pains are caused by, or made worse by, our posture. Coming to London in 1904 he was a sensation among the celebrities, performers and doctors of the time, who dubbed him the 'Asthma Doctor'. Over the next 50 years, he taught, trained and further developed his techniques. Madonna, Paul McCartney, Roald Dahl, Robin Williams and Jeremy Irons are all known to have reaped the rewards of the Alexander Technique. John Cleese, the comedian and actor, once said: "I find the Alexander Technique very helpful in my work. Things happen without you trying. They get to be light and relaxed. You must get an Alexander teacher to show it to you." Tony will be holding an Alexander Technique day at Wanstead House on 30 May. For more information, call 07712 226 261

Wanstead House

Alexander Technique Day Saturday 30th May 9am – 1pm Almost all of our aches, pains, tensions, neck, shoulder, back, balance and breathing problems are caused by, or made worse by, faulty postural habits. This is the day you will find out about your posture. How it impacts on your wellbeing and how to turn it around. Learn how to stand, walk, sit and stand up efficiently. Understand bad backs and beds, pillows, lying down and getting up with ease. Learn what affects and releases your breathing, aches and pains in shoulders, neck, hips, knees and more… Maximum 10 people.

T-Space is a full service Design and Build company. Our background is in free thinking home design, working with clients to design their ideal environment. We often speak of ‘tailored living space’, and architectural practice is still at the heart of our business. In recent years, however, we have extended our remit to include the construction of our projects. This provides our clients with a seamless service. It means we are free to pursue excellence without having to work through third parties. The only people involved are our clients and us, so we can concentrate on optimising the outcome, with the flexibility to react to site conditions and changing hearts.

Made for Chelsea The Chelsea Flower Show returns to the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea this month. Rachel Leverton reports on this hugely popular, long-running and trend-setting event

T

he Chelsea Flower Show is to gardening what the Paris catwalks are to fashion. Paris fashions may seem outlandish, but they push certain trends that end up in high street shops, albeit in a watereddown version. Likewise, though many of Chelsea's show gardens are fantasy pieces that demonstrate outrageous ideas, the horticultural trends on display will find their way into our own more modest plots. For example, did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940s and decking in the 1980s. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land.

This article is only available in the printed edition

In 2006, James Dyson even produced a water feature in which the water ran uphill. Actually, I'm still waiting for my garden centre to stock one of those! Chelsea isn't just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. In recent years, there have been hosepipe bans in the grand pavilion and many of the gardens have showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes. Chelsea draws over 150,000 visitors each year. For the past 10 years, it's been held over five days instead of four, such is its popularity. The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display to the general public is breathtaking.

Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It's like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. And if you visit on the last day, you don't have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely, a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It's perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize-winning garden. So what should you choose? If it were me, I'd

want something special, a reminder of my visit. I'd go for a species that I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case, it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia. Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come. Chelsea Flower Show facts zz The first Chelsea Flower Show was staged in a single large tent and officially called The Great Spring Show. zz The first show consisted of 244 exhibitors, under half of what you will find today. zz The show was cancelled during the Second World War and the site of the show was used by the War Office to station antiaircraft guns. zz A cap of 157,000 was placed on the number of visitors to the showground in 1988. The Chelsea Flower show takes place from 19 to 23 May. For more information, visit rhs.org.uk/shows-events

What makes Packfords different from other local hotels? Debra: My staff have worked with me for many years and really care about the service we provide. As we’re a smaller hotel we are able to offer a much more personal service and will always go above and beyond to make sure our customers have a special event to remember. It’s wonderful to see our wedding couples return year after year to ask us to host their child’s christening or special family celebration. We also hold Afternoon Teas four times a year which are always attended by many familiar faces…A visit is a must to get a true feeling for the hotel!

and a stint at Sheesh in Chigwell, I decided to set up my own events company. It was while helping a friend with her wedding that I was introduced to Packfords. Although I have lived in Wanstead for many years, I had never attended an event at Packfords and was so surprised to discover such a lovely venue with beautiful gardens so close to home! I really enjoyed dealing with Sarah, Maria and the rest of the team and Debra offered me the role of ‘Events Manager’ in January 2014.
