Welcome... Fundraising is very much a theme this month. It can’t have escaped your attention that comic relief will be taking place on 18 March, when Lenny Henry and friends will be donning their red noses in the name of charity. The following day, however, another important event will get underway which may be the cause a few red body parts itself, namely feet. On the evening of 19 March the annual Haven House fire walking event comes to Wanstead, which will see a succession of fundraisers take a short walk over hot embers in support of the children’s charity (see pages 14-15). Towards the end of the month children will be the focus of another fundraising event taking place at Christ Church Hall, which will be hosting the Redbridge NCT Nearly New Sale. On the morning of 26 March the hall will be full of baby related bargains, offering much needed savings for existing and expectant parents alike (see pages 50-51). The last NCT sale in Wanstead was hugely popular with over 350 bargain hunters attending and, following recent government cuts, this month’s event is sure to have even wider appeal. Although a packed church hall full of eager shoppers may not be an ideal place to network, local charitable events are certainly a good opportunity for people to come together and meet others in the community. A party being held at the Oxfam bookshop is a perfect example of this. On the evening of 9 March local residents are being invited to the shop on the High Street to socialise with friends and chat with Oxfam representatives (see page 60). With the Wanstead Transition Initiative also holding a community spirited event this month (see pages 36-37), opportunities to support local good causes and to meet like minded individuals are plentiful and are there to be taken advantage of. Youth elections

Cheaper street parties

Young people went to the polls last month in the Redbridge Youth Election 2011, which was open to young people aged between 11 and 18 who live or go to school in the borough. Voters were asked to select two candidates to represent them in the Youth Parliament. The results will be announced this month and the Redbridge Youth MPs that are elected will attend the Redbridge Youth Council which represents the views of young people across the borough.

With the royal wedding approaching, Redbridge Council has made it easier for local residents to host celebrations in their streets by removing the cost of making an application to close a road. The cost of advertising the Traffic Order for a road closure, together with administration charges, is in the region of £1,600 – which was previously passed on to residents but will now be met by the Council.

Visit bit.ly/youthmp for more information.

If you wish to hold a street party you can get advice and request an application form by calling 020 8708 3941.

On 19 March Haven House Children’s Hospice will be hosting their infamous fire walking event at Eton Manor Rugby Club in Wanstead. Caroline Conry, events fundraiser at Haven House, explains how this fundraising challenge has the potential to change lives forever by helping participants to overcome addiction, fears and phobias

A

fire walk is the most inspirational journey you will ever undertake. It is, as the name suggests, a bare foot walk over red hot wood embers measuring around 550˚C. The hottest ever recorded fire walk took place on temperatures of over 1000˚C. It’s tempting to look at fire walking and explain it with physics. But that alone is not enough to dispel the primal fear caused by the feeling of intense heat on your face at the edge of the fire pit. Fear is at the centre of the experience, the fear that you feel on the brink of a fire walk is incredible – all of your survival instincts are telling you to stay put, stay where it’s safe. Don’t take the risk. But after an

exhilarating and motivational brief seminar you’ll learn that impossible is nothing. It also helps to know that the organisers have a record of being 100% injury free. Cultures across the globe, from Greece to China, have used, and continue to use, fire walking for rites of healing, initiation and faith. The tradition is many years old, in fact the first ever recorded fire walk occurred over 4,000 years ago in India. The story goes that two Brahmin priests competed to see who could walk the farthest over a bed of hot coals. The victor’s triumph was recorded in writing and still survives to this day.

Alex Le Vey, who took part in the Haven House fire walk last year, reflects on how the experience benefited him: “I’ll be honest, as a person who quivers with fear at the thought of getting sunburnt, walking on fire was not on the top of my agenda for 2010. Yet, as pressure mounted on me from my colleagues and friends I felt it my duty to prove myself, and reluctantly signed up to the challenge.” “I arrived early, just in time to see the fire get lit, the first thing that struck me was the length of the walk, my plan to jump over it without being noticed was not going to work! I’ll admit it, I was scared, and left wondering if my ego had got the better of me, wouldn’t I have been happier at home with a bit of Saturday night TV?” “We were led into a hall and given a broad introduction on fire walking, the dangers surrounding it, and its ability to inspire and motivate. After an inspirational talk I felt ready to go, and was sure that I would be able to complete the challenge, without being reduced to tears.” “However, after leaving the safety of the building, and being faced with a strip of smouldering coals, my confidence quickly left me, and I shot to the back of the queue. After watching a host of braver people at the front of the queue tackle the challenge I felt a compelling urge to give it a go myself. As soon as I took my last step from the hot coals I felt a great sense of achievement that I still feel today and I am safe in the knowledge that whatever challenge I face, I will be able to conquer.”

The grounds of Haven House

As a charity Haven House really depends on its supporters for the majority of its funding. Walking on fire is just one of the ways you can help raise funds for Haven House. There are lots of events and challenges running throughout the year – visit www.havenhouse.org.uk to find out more.

“So, would I recommend the fire walk? How could I not! It’s a great, life changing experience you’ll never forget, and you’ll be able to raise some money for a truly deserving cause in the process.”

Step up to the challenge

This year’s event will be held at Eton Manor Rugby Club in Nutter Lane, Wanstead. Eton Manor have chosen Haven House Children’s Hospice as their charity of the year and will be hosting a number of events throughout 2011 to raise much needed funds for the charity.

The fire walk is open to anyone over the age of 18 (under 18’s may be allowed to participate with written permission from a parent or guardian, please contact Haven House to discuss).

Haven House Children’s Hospice is situated in Woodford Green. It’s a local charity caring for children and young people, up to the age of 19, who have life-limiting conditions and who are unlikely to reach adulthood. Haven House helps families by providing a range of services that include day, short break and end of life care, as well as community services that include a play specialist who visits the family at home.

We invite you to join us at the rugby club on 19 March from 5.30pm – all the family are welcome to join you and watch you undertake this amazing challenge. There will be music, refreshments and food. Can you think of a better way to spend a Saturday night? Email hayleybridge@havenhouse.org.uk or call 0 0 0 for more details.

Staying balanced Wanstead House will be hosting an ayurveda open day this month, giving you the opportunity to find out about this traditional Indian medical system. Ashish Paul and Zane Zalite, experts in ayurveda and organisers of the free event, introduce the holistic benefits of ayurveda and herbal medicine

A

yurveda is a traditional Indian medical system with its origins dating back 5,000 years to the Vedic period. In Western medicine, ayurveda is classified as a system of complementary and alternative medicine. Ayurveda is identified as ‘the knowledge of life’ or ‘the science of life’ in the four forms of health, unhealth, happiness and sorrow. It is seen by many as a way of life and focuses on treating and preventing ill-health. Ayurveda describes people and herbs in terms of their doshas, which are faults or blemishes. Any imbalance in the equilibrium of the doshas can cause ailments and diseases and this is known as Vikriti, which is the abnormal state of the body, as opposed to Prakriti, which is the normal state of the mind and body. There are three doshas, known as Vatta, Pitta and Kapha. Vatta, which literally means ‘what blows’, is associated with air and space and relates to communication, transport and movement. Pitta, meaning ‘what cooks’, is associated with fire and water and linked to digestion, transformation and metabolism. Kapha, meaning ‘what sticks’, is associated with water and earth and relates to connecting structures, cohesion and lubrication. Ayurvedic diagnosis Diagnosis of a disease in ayurveda involves the following assessments: l Assessing the ayurvedic constitution, or Prakriti and Vikriti, by asking questions in consultation or by filling in a dosha questionnaire l Pulse reading – ayurvedic practitioners feel the pulse on both hands and assess the dosha imbalance l Tongue assessment – the patient’s tongue is looked at and assessed l Nail examination

After assessment a tailor made management and treatment plan is advised. Ayurvedic medicines are mainly given in the form of herbs, along with dietary advice. Prescription usually includes mineral compounds, ayurvedic massage, yoga exercises, panchakarma (special detoxification programme) and rasayana (rejuvenation medicine). Ayurvedic herbs are generally prescribed in a compound formula as a powder, dried herb, liquid, pill or capsule form. Dietary advice is based on the patient’s body constitution and forms a crucial part of patient management. Panchakarma treatments are more common for addressing chronic conditions where a deep detoxification is required and will include elimination of the excess of doshas. The five main treatments are:

Ayurvedic yoga Yoga means ‘unification’ in Sanskrit. It consists of postures, breathing exercises and meditation and is recommended as part of ayurvedic consultation. Ayurvedic massage Ayurvedic massage has become popular in the 21st century due to its ability to treat the root cause of a disease. Ayurvedic massage allows the therapist to balance an individual to their unique psychosomatic state. This in turn allows an individual to feel balanced and sustain any pathological processes in the body and mind. During ayurvedic massage a luke-warm organic oil is applied in a structured way that suits the individual according to their unique body and mind constitution. Some treatments will also require herbal powders to be applied to body to treat particular ailments. An effective treatment is Kati vasti, which involves the application of medicated oil onto any region of the back for the treatment of acute or chronic back pain, muscle sprains, sciatica or spondylosis. For stress management, Shirodhara (forehead oil flow) is an excellent treatment which calms, clears and strengthens the mind and body. With spring approaching you might want to try some weight loss massage treatments – Udvartana or Garshana. Patients should always seek advice from a therapist registered with the Ayurvedic Practitioner Association – the governing body of ayurvedic practitioners in the UK. Ashish Paul is a qualified ayurvedic practitioner and a trained western medical herbalist based in Woodford Green. She belongs to the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association (APA) and the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) www.ayuva.com Zane Zalite is fully qualified as both a physiotherapist and an ayurvedic therapist, practising from South woodford and Loughton. waking forest Spring is slowly arriving and Epping Forest is coming alive with bird song and beauty. It is the perfect time to get out and explore, explains Alison Tapply, community liaison officer at City of London

T

he majestic veteran trees, some that are over 400 years old, are just one of Epping Forest’s jewels. Exploring the vast woodland you can also discover hidden ponds and plains of open grassland. Step back in time and stumble onto an ancient Iron-Age camp at Ambresbury Banks or Loughton Camp. Catch a glimpse at how the other half lived in Wanstead Park or Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, Chingford. We all enjoy a good walk across the Forest but why not take it one step further and get more involved?

Epping Forest Forums Six Forums have been set up focusing on the most popular leisure activities people get up to in the Forest. It is a chance for like minded people to get together, share ideas and ask questions about Epping Forest. We will also share with you future management plans, so that you can give us feedback and get more involved with the future of the Forest. So if you are a keen cyclist, walker, jogger, horse rider, dog walker or angler, get in touch to receive details of the next meeting. Through the Forums we also get together to carry out practical work improving areas for all Forest users and the wildlife that lives there. Events and Activities Why not pop into one of our three Forest Centres and find out about our events? You could be bug hunting in the woods, joining a guided bike ride, discovering about the conservation work on our trees in our ‘Meet the Arborists’ event or enjoying a picnic while watching an outdoor theatre performance. Whatever you do this spring, don’t miss out on what’s happening in Epping Forest.

Mad About Dogs? If ever you doubt that the British are a nation of dog lovers, then Crufts – which takes place on 10 to 13 March – will set you straight with 28,000 top pedigree dogs attending this year, along with around 160,000 spectators

N

amed after its founder, Charles Cruft, the first dog show of that name was held in 1891 in Islington, London. It’s now officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest dog show in the world. My ‘must-see’ events are agility and obedience. I admit to watching these with an envious eye as my own pooch, Archie, was at the back of the queue when brains were handed out and I can only dream of a dog who sits, stays and jumps through hoops, rather than races around like a loon, chasing his own tail until he crashes into the fridge. Crufts accepts only the cream of the canine obedience corps, and it takes dedication to produce a champion. There are regional selection days around the country and different levels of ability can enter. Top obedience champions need to perform well in many different skills including: l Three different paces of heel work, including a sit, stand and down command l Retrieval of an object l Send-away l Distance control in six positions l Scent discrimination l A three minute sit-stay l A ten minute down-stay Agility was actually introduced as a filler item in 1978 and proved so popular it became a permanent fixture. Agility requires as much discipline as obedience though the skills are different. The dogs have to negotiate a complex series of obstacles without error, in the fastest time possible. If you’ve never watched it you’re missing a real treat. Most dog owners can never hope to aspire to Crufts glory but we can all make sure our dogs are trained properly; it’s responsible and it’s fun. And local training clubs are great places to make twolegged, as well as four-legged, friends.

Five top dog training tips... Dogs are pack animals and need to know their place. Dominance is probably the biggest cause of poor behaviour in a dog. Dogs are creatures of habit so be consistent with commands. Socialise a dog with children, other dogs, and other animals. You’re less likely to have a nervous dog if it has encountered a variety of situations. Encourage your dog to play according to breed type. Terriers, for example, adore pulling games whilst Retrievers like to play fetch. Enrol in a good training club which uses gentle reward based methods and positive reinforcement rather than check-chains.

Essex Farmers’ Markets local produce for local people

TRADER SPOTLIGHT... As a third generation fruit farmer, John Brown knows the fruit industry and market well, so when inclement weather affected the production yields of his crops, he knew he had to diversify to survive. Not wanting to move away from fruit growing he thought about how he could best use his crops and so in 2000, Core Fruit Products was born. Instead of just trying to sell all their produce as quality grown fruit, John and wife Wendy, managed to get a grant from the Rural Enterprise Scheme funded by DEFRA to purchase their our own press, bottling and labelling equipment and have continued to grow from there. Now Core produce a wide range of quality fruit juices including apple, pear, apple and blackcurrant, spiced apple and apple & ginger, which are available in 1 litre or 25cl bottles. The bottles are clearly marked with a distinctive white label and the name Core, which of course could be ‘core of the apple’ or in fact ‘core - what a flavour!’ Core Fruit Products are located at Upper Mystole Park Farm, which is in the Parish of Chartham, some five miles from the centre of Canterbury . Although the ground is chalky and the orchards exposed to the elements, the company believes this enhances the fruit’s flavour. As well as many apple varieties the farm has over the years planted a number of new varieties of apples and plums,

WVD-MARCH-2011.indd 34

expanded their holding of blueberries and also introduced cherries. Testament to the company’s success over the past four or five years has been proven by the number of awards Core Fruit Products have won. In 2004, the Guild Award for fine food retailers gave a gold award to Core for its Cox Bramley Juice, Silver for its pear and bronze for its russet. This was followed by the Best Non-Alcoholic Product in Kent from Kent Life and the Produced in Kent organisation; this award has now been won by Core three years running. During the initial stages customers have to vote for their favourites followed by the judges tasting. This year Core have introduced Hard Core Cider, which will be available to purchase at some of the farmers markets, where Core regularly attend as well as bars, restaurants and farmshops, which already carry an alcohol license. Branching out even further,

CORE FRUIT PRODUCTS Core is also keen to promote its range of tasty jams and chutneys, already available is its Victoria Plum, Strawberry and blackcurrant jams, which can be purchased at all of the farmers markets and some of its other retail outlets. Core Fruit Products have been regular stall holders at most of the Essex Farmers Markets since their inception and firmly believe that this is one of the best ways they can reach a wider audience. The farm is located in quite an isolated position, which means it is difficult for the public to get to them but the farmers markets have proven extremely successful for the company, which now participates at most of the Essex Farmers Market sites. As a family run company, John, Wendy and son Thomas, have a firm grip on the business but rely heavily of their team of dedicated staff including three full time members, various part time staff and essential casual staff at various other times of the year. The company also has sound working relationships with other farmers and producers in the area, which ensure the company’s products are always served at their very best.

Taking the initiative The Wanstead Transition Initiative is one of thousands of Transition groups all over the world. Local resident Zoe Sprigings offers her own perspective on the project and the opportunities available for the town – and world – in which we live

I

t all began with a walk across Wanstead Flats, where I saw an advertisement for a film screening by the Wanstead Transition Initiative. I’d just arrived in Wanstead, having moved here from central London a few weeks earlier, and I’d always been interested in community action. I was also keen to meet people in the local area. I’d already been struck by what a community spirit Wanstead had, and I wanted to be a part of it. I’d vaguely heard of transition towns – my boyfriend and I had recently visited Totnes in Devon, a town famous for pioneering the transition movement – but now was my chance to learn more. At the first meeting, I heard about how the transition movement is a response to the reducing availability of fossil fuels, and the threat of climate change facing us all. We were shown the Pete Postlethwaite film, The Age of Stupid, which argued that urgent action is needed to tackle climate change before it’s too late. It was very interesting, but the highlight of the evening was meeting local people who cared about the same things as me, although we all had different ideas about what to do. I joined the friendly group who had first proposed Transition Wanstead, and found myself welcomed into an enthusiastic and varied team, including people working in everything from psychology and consultancy to the Church and advertising. Fundamentally, transition towns are all about creating more sustainable communities, which use less energy and draw their strengths from local links. There are as many ways to take action as there are communities in Britain. A group could get involved in serving local food in a hospital, or being a contact for elderly people in times of snow or floods, or in campaigning for more local cycle routes, or setting up a scheme to help kids walk to school. There are so many benefits: healthier, safer and happier communities, which build connections

and even save money along the way. A really powerful message of the transition movement is that, if we wait for Government to do everything, then it will be too late; if we do it on our own, then it will be too little; but if we all act together, then it might just be enough and in time. The point is that we can work together to achieve things which we want as a community, for the area we care about and know best. Transition towns are springing up all around the UK. Totnes might be the most famous, or maybe Brixton in London, but there’s even one next door in Leytonstone.

As well as feeling encouraged in my small efforts to lead a more sustainable life, I feel optimistic about what we can achieve as a community, and it’s great to begin bumping into people in the street who I know from the group. I work in central London, so without this opportunity I would have carried on being a commuter and would never have really become a part of Wanstead. The highlight so far was the event we ran last month at Wanstead House to discuss how we can save energy and money in our homes – from draught-busting to solar panels. We had more people turn up than we had provided chairs for – almost 40 – and they all brought real enthusiasm. Ideas were flying around, with everybody offering their own experience. The evenings of planning, over shared food and drink, with the initial team have been great, but the best thing is seeing the interest in the project expand with each event we hold. To find our more about Wanstead Transition Initiative and how your can get involved in shaping the direction of your community, visit www.transitionwanstead.org.uk

independent experts in matters relating to pregnancy, birth and early parenthood and are an influential and trusted advisor to UK governments, royal colleges, private sector bodies and other charities.

NCT was formerly known as the National Childbirth Trust until it changed its name in January 2008. Operating for over 50 years, NCT is recognised as the voice of pregnant women and new parents throughout the UK with over 100,000 members. Our strength comes from the dedication of our volunteers, who work through our network of branches to provide and support local services, training and evidence-based information for parents, families and health professionals.

All fundraising income goes towards NCT’s work in supporting parents. In the last budget, the chancellor announced several cuts and changes to benefits that low- and middle-income families are now starting to feel. These include the muchdiscussed three-year freeze on current Child Benefit rates and axing of the benefit for households where one person has earnings above the 40% threshold (currently around £44,000).

The charity works continuously for improvements to maternity care and better services and facilities for new parents. We are viewed by many as

With rising VAT, mums-to-be have also lost out on the £190 Health in Pregnancy grant, which has been scrapped along with the £500 Sure Start Maternity Grant, for all but your first baby. All this at

a time when prices are rocketing and parents are having to juggle their finances. We realise having a baby is expensive business; clothes, toys, equipment, food and nappies all cost money that parents have to find from somewhere. Plus, we know parents feel under commercial pressure to buy new products for their child – an Ipsos MORI survey commissioned by NCT found three quarters of parents and expectant parents say they feel there is too much pressure to buy unnecessary baby products. NCT wants new families to be free from being pulled apart by the struggle to meet their financial needs and feel that they are able to meet the needs of their baby. We also want to see a more supportive environment for families in the UK before it’s too late to repair the damage later on down the line. NCT’s Nearly New Sales offer new and expectant parents a financial lifeline, with an alternative to forking out for brand new baby products. They provide a haven for cash-strapped parents, enabling them to kit out their children for less than high street prices or save a fortune on preparing for the arrival of their new baby. Items available to purchase include: Moses baskets, cots, pushchairs, highchairs, slings, reusable nappies, toys, clothes, books, maternity equipment and apparel and any number of nursery essentials. Kathryn Thompson, Chairperson for Redbridge NCT says: “With VAT rising and other benefits being cut, NCT Nearly New Sales are a win-win situation for families. Parents with surplus baby goods can sell them to make some extra cash, while mums and dads-to-be tightening the purse strings can find great bargains while funding NCT’s vital charity work across the UK.” Redbridge NCT offers support, information and friendship to new parents and parents-to-be and is run by local parents. A lot of the activities offered are free of charge, which further helps families in these tough economic times. There are social activities like coffee mornings, pram groups and pub nights, while antenatal and postnatal classes are subsidised to ensure that all families can afford them. The next Redbridge NCT Nearly New Sale will be taking place on the March from 11am to 1 .1 pm in Christ Church Hall, Wanstead Place. NCT members gain priority entry at 10.4 am by showing their membership cards and there is a £1 entrance fee for all.

Every year NCT: l Provides antenatal classes for 62,000 expectant parents l Provides early days courses (postnatal) and drop-ins to 3,500 parents l Answers 33,000 telephone enquiries including 28,000 to the breastfeeding line l Reaches up to 600,000 pregnant women with bumps & babies magazine l Provides breastfeeding counselling to over 10,000 parents in their local area l Links up more than 1,000 parents with special experiences l Relies on the help of over 10,000 volunteers l Supports 4,000 health professionals l Reaches over 110,000 people through our website each month To find out about events, groups, courses and volunteering opportunities in the area, visit www.nct.org.uk. Herbs & Spices Spring at last: a good time for a detox. Cutting out sugar may give you a flying start but you’ll also need a few herbs. Sue Blain explores the benefits and the uses

B

efore refrigeration was invented herbs such as Sage, Thyme, Oregano and Rosemary were used to preserve meat. But they were also used medicinally and we can make use of these properties to soothe coughs and sore throats. Simply add ginger, cinnamon, garlic or parsley to boiling water, let it cool a little and then gargle with the mixture or just drink it like a tea. You can also include these herbs and spices in a fresh vegetable soup because they will make your diet more alkaline. Use Turmeric and Cayenne Pepper in your cooking to boost circulation. Buy a liquid preparation, called a tincture, of Ginkgo Biloba or Vinca Minor if cold hands and feet are a particular problem. These may even improve your memory at the same time. If indigestion is a problem then the bitter herbs Centarium, Gentian or Yarrow may help. Nature provides us with a number of natural antibiotics to try, such as Echinacea and the less well known Goldenseal and Oliveleaf. Echinacea is now recognised as an effective regulator of the immune system and Uva-ursi acts as a urinary antiseptic, preventing cystitis. Even so-called garden weeds, Dandelion and Nettle, are good for detoxing. They can be bought as a tea or a tincture. Milk Thistle, which supports the regeneration of liver cells; Artichoke, which improves fat metabolism and reduces cholesterol levels; and Kelp are all good for cleansing. When using tinctures always follow the instructions on the bottle, and check with your doctor if you’re on prescribed medication. Alongside homeopathy, herbalism is still the most widely practised medicine in the world and, until the nineteenth century, it was the main form of

medicine in the West. Herbs contain many plant constituents which work together and balance each other. Meadowsweet, for example, contains salicylic acid, from which aspirin is synthesised, but it also contains an ingredient that treats stomach ulcers, sometimes a side-effect of taking aspirin on an empty stomach. Herbalists use a holistic approach to treat the underlying cause of a disease. Many herbs stimulate the body’s own healing powers and some have an affinity with a particular organ or system. They can be a natural complement to orthodox medicine. For example, herbs can promote healing and vitality in a patient following cancer treatment or surgery. They are often used alongside homoeopathy or acupuncture. Why not create a herb garden this spring so you can use more herbs in your cooking? Seek advice on appropriate tinctures in health shops and let herbs and spices become a part of your healthier lifestyle.
