Welcome... There are two words I try hard not to overuse in this column and in this publication: ‘local’ and ‘community’. I have to try hard because those two words – which combine seamlessly to form a perfect descriptor for so many elements of a… local community magazine – are all too easily devalued when used too liberally. Like a mischievous child saying sorry time and time again or newly-weds continually declaring their love, the power of certain words can decline with repeated use. In order to convey sincerity, we must choose our words carefully. But this issue is different. With local council elections on the horizon, we have given over a substantial chunk of editorial space to those members of the community who are asking for your vote on 3 May, and will do so again next month. And when it comes to local election candidates seeking support from members of the local community, it’s hard – nigh on impossible – to cap the local community lexeme. In our last issue, a quick word count tells me ‘local’ occurred 69 times, ‘community’ 29 times and ‘local community’ six times. That’s a fairly average tally, kept under control by careful proofreading and judicious use of a thesaurus. Not so this time around, with the count rising to 137, 75 and 20 respectively. Our prospective councillors clearly like to talk about community issues, and local ones at that. So, if national and international politics are testing your levels of engagement, take a look at the issues closer to home and say the two magic words: local community. Join the celebration of the true meaning of ‘local’, the true meaning of ‘community’ and the even more powerful meaning that is derived from uniting the two. Lee Marquis, Editor

The Bungalow Café was established in 1938 by Mr and Mrs Godley. Mr Godley was a volunteer firefighter during the Blitz, and this café was used to feed local firefighters, police and the armed forces. We still have a very strong following with the local police to this day. Mr and Mrs Godley were married locally on a fire engine (pictured above).

YearS

In the 1960s the café was passed on to two Irish ladies who ran it as a coffee shop and diner, serving tea and scones. Then, in the late 1970s, it was taken over by George Demetriou – our predecessor – who ran it up to 2001.

Our teas and coffees have not increased in price from the 1970s – we still serve tea for 50p and coffee for 60p. Although the market has forced our hand regarding food prices, we refuse to increase these for as long as we can hold off.

The venue is still running as a traditional British café, and to celebrate 80 years of serving the local community we are offering free teas or coffees with any breakfast purchased during the month of May 2018.

Over the years, The Bungalow Café has become a landmark in Wanstead and we thrive on keeping our prices low and our quality high. We invite you to come and experience a venue that is a cut above the rest.

Museum of London curator to give talk on the suffragette campaign A presentation about the militant suffragette campaign will take place at Wanstead Library this month. The Museum of London holds the world’s largest collection of material related to the suffragettes and Beverley Cook, the curator of the collection, will offer some insight into the lives of those who faced imprisonment, hunger strike and force-feeding in their commitment to the cause. Exploring the origins of the museum’s collection, the talk will also look at objects connected to some of the lesser known suffragettes, including Kitty Marion’s

Breast cancer awareness

Return of garden waste collections

Local residents are invited to learn more about breast cancer and other health conditions at an awareness session at Wanstead Library this month. “These interactive sessions are delivered by our team of Health and Wellbeing Buddies,” said a spokesperson for Redbridge CVS, which is hosting the free event on 22 March from 4pm to 5.30pm. Participants will be shown films and invited to take part in quizzes. Call 020 8708 7400

Redbridge Council’s fortnightly free garden waste collection service will resume from 5 March. “Not everyone will receive their new bag before 5 March, but that’s fine as gardeners are free to use their old woven bags or biodegradable bags. You can also use plastic bags – please keep them untied and open with the garden waste content visible. We thank you for your patience,” said a council spokesperson.

Redbridge Music Society to welcome young pianist to Wanstead

A professional photographer from Wanstead will be displaying images of India and Japan at the 84 Gallery on Nightingale Lane. “The exhibition is a selection of pictures contrasting everyday street scenes in two very different countries. As chief political photographer for the Press Association, I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the world, but India and Japan have become fond favourites with their very opposing appearance,” said Stefan Rousseau. The exhibition opens on 24 March (6pm to 9pm) and runs until 25 April.

An award-winning young pianist will perform at Wanstead Library this month. “John Paul Ekins has performed at many prestigious venues, including the Wigmore Hall and the Royal Albert Hall… His competition successes include some 19 awards, scholarships and prizes,” said David Bird of the Redbridge Music Society, which is hosting the event on 20 March (8pm; visitors: £10). John Paul will play works by Chopin and Beethoven, ending the evening with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Call 07511 888 520

Bring your odd glove and make a new pair at the upcycling fair

Local WhatsApp groups help residents stay safe and secure

The organiser of the Wanstead Upcycling Fair – which will take place on 31 March from 11am to 3pm at Wanstead Library – is encouraging people to bring their odd gloves to the event. “Everybody has odd gloves where a partner has been lost. Why not bring them along and see if you can find a match? Or make an original pair – so long as there is a right and a left, who’s to say they have to be the same?” said Catherine Daniel, who will be selling her handmade baskets at the fair to help reduce the use of plastic bags.

In light of recent incidents of security and safety in Wanstead, residents have got together to set up WhatsApp groups to notify people of potential issues as they arise. “We have had an overwhelming response from residents wanting to be part of the WhatsApp groups set up for Wanstead and Snaresbrook. We are currently helping residents to set them up and advising current administrators with regards to usage and data protection,” said Safer Neighbourhood Team members Steve Wilks, Jill Stock and Debs Selner.

A petition calling for TfL to reinstate the frequency of the W12 bus service to three times an hour was handed to City Hall last month. “The number of signatures [over 3,000] gathered in such a short period of time shows the strength of feeling in the local community about this… It is important to so many people but particularly those travelling to and from Whipps Cross Hospital,” said Paul Donovan, who was joined by fellow Wanstead Village Labour candidates in delivering the petition to London Assembly Member Tom Copley.

Tributes have been paid to Alan Cornish, a leading figure in the campaign for Wanstead Park, who died last month. “In the 1970s, Alan co-authored papers on the problems of the park’s lake system, which long remained a key reference source. In the 1980s he had been a leading figure in the first incarnation of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands,” said a spokesperson for the community group. In 1982, Alan and his wife Janet discovered Roman artefacts in Wanstead Park, which had been churned up by building work.

T

he world has changed and continues to do so, and women of the East End of London have played their part. From the matchwomen of Bow to the Ford factory machinists of Dagenham, the women of east London have fought for their rights, their beliefs, their communities … and we’re not finished yet! In 1914, Sylvia Pankhurst split from the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), formed by her mother Emmeline and sister Christabel, and started up her own branch of suffragettes in the East End. This branch was called the East London Federation of Suffragettes (ELFS) and was established in Old Ford Road, Bow. The reason for the split was that Sylvia’s mother and sister did not think a movement led by working-class women would have the necessary clout to win the vote. They felt that middle- and upper-class women had more power. Sylvia did not agree. As well as campaigning for the women’s vote, the ELFS aimed to address issues relevant to working-class women. They set up a day nursery and cheap restaurant (part of their campaign against rising food prices) on Old Ford Road, a toy factory in Norman Grove that employed men and women at an equal, living wage and a relief programme providing children with milk. They employed tactics such as lobbying and mass mobilisation, instead of the single heroic acts favoured by the WSPU – a spell in prison was not something these women could afford, they had families relying on their wage. Whilst the WSPU suspended their Votes for Women campaign during the First World War, the ELFS continued to demonstrate in favour of women gaining the vote, as well as other women’s rights issues, such as equal pay. The ELFS were not a single issue campaign group; they were a revolution that aimed to change the role of women in society. In February 1918, the Representation of the People Act was passed, which gave all men the vote at 21 and women (who owned property) the vote at 30. Although this added 8.5 million women to the electoral register, it still represented less than half of adult women

in the UK. A significant if not partial victory, at the same time in 1918, the Parliamentary Qualification of Women Act was passed, enabling women to stand as Members of Parliament. The first woman MP was elected in 1918. But the story continues. No sooner had the act passed than many former suffragettes and suffragists got to work immediately on the campaign to extend the vote to women under 30 and those over 30 who had been excluded, many of whom were domestic servants. They found victory at last in 1928 when the Equal Franchise Act finally awarded women the vote on equal terms to men, at age 21. The East End of London has been a hub of activism throughout history. It is traditionally a working-class area that has provided hundreds of thousands of people with employment through its industries, including the docks, factories and traditional trades such as textiles and market trading. This plethora of jobs has attracted many communities to the area, making it a diverse place to live. In the past, workers in the East End were not well paid, but women and the black, Asian and Chinese communities tended to have suffered the most with low pay and poor working conditions. The matchgirls’ strike at the Bryant and May factory is one of the most famous strikes in the East End led by and formed of women. Although there have been improvements since then, there is still more to do and women continue to campaign for their working rights. And so we come to the present, where last year’s sex scandals in politics and the media have all gone to show how the struggle for equality remains as important as ever, and also how the struggle now extends to private spaces as well. What would Sylvia Pankhurst make of modern-day discrimination and inequality? As her granddaughter, Helen Pankhurst, said recently at the launch of the East End Women’s Museum: “We must hear all women’s voices loud and clear and acknowledge their rights.” Even in today’s society, there are still issues of inequality, especially in the workplace.

Pension divisions Jonathan Diamond, head of family law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, looks at the quest to give divorcing couples improved clarity over the sharing of their pensions

W

hen a couple decide to separate, one of the more complex areas of contention is likely to be their pensions. Interestingly, and possibly because pensions can be so complicated, this is an area little dealt with by reported case law, and is widely regarded as a difficult area of legal practice which suffers from a lack of consistency in approach. Courts have the power to order the sharing of pensions in order to achieve fairness between the divorcing couple. Depending upon when the pension was acquired, it may be that their overall pension pot is shared equally based on fund value or benefits payable. Alternatively, the split may be something other than an equal sharing in circumstances where one party contributed to the pension prior to the marriage – and where it is appropriate to ringfence any pre-marital contributions. Because of the complexities, some advisors have adopted an all too simple approach and agreed an equal split without any investigation as to what this means to their client in practice. Depending upon the nature of the scheme, different rules will apply. A straightforward money purchase scheme may well be fairly easily calculable and readily accessible upon the parties attaining a certain age. Conversely, and particularly where one of the parties has worked in the public sector, the final benefits may not be easily predictable and considerable care needs to be taken to ensure that the spouse who is entitled to receive a fair share of the pension actually receives what is intended. Key questions to consider might include the date upon which the pension benefits can be taken. Is there an option to take a lump sum? Are cost of living increases payable

under the terms of the pension? What will the actual income stream be when the pension is accessed? Will there be penalties for drawing down the pension early and if so, what is the extent of these penalties? What if a spouse or former spouse dies before the pension sharing order is implemented? Under the auspices of the Family Justice Council, the Pension Advisory Group (PAG) has been formed to try to give clarity to all parties. The PAG’s brief is to conduct an interdisciplinary review of how pensions are treated on divorce and to produce a Family Justice Council pension guide for the profession and divorcing public. It is hoped this may encourage a consistency of practice which is currently lacking. Though the PAG has no authority to change the law through any of its publications, it will seek to explain the current law and to facilitate best practice. The group is expected to report by the end of 2018.

Wanstead Village 2018 Steve Wilks is a Conservative Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

have lived in Wanstead for over four years, having grown up in nearby Walthamstow. From my local comprehensive school, I was the first one in my family to go to Cambridge University. I have been a qualified accountant for the past 15 years, working in process improvement and regulatory policy, so I have a solid background in scrutiny and control. When I moved to Wanstead, I decided to start up a neighbourhood watch on the Nightingale Estate after a spate of burglaries on my road. Crime does not flourish in a community that cares and I am a former chairman of the Safer Neighbourhoods Ward Panel, where I liaised with the local PCSOs to highlight and resolve local crime issues. The role has enabled me to meet more people from different walks of life and to make new connections to get the job done. I am a firm believer that residents should work together to help improve the local community. Through my local connections, I helped to promote fundraising for equipment for the Wanstead Playground Association and helped to secure a small donation in 2015. While councils provide the formal framework to run public services, it is the residents who, through vocation and free time, help to guide officials in ensuring these are implemented optimally through local community groups. I have written numerous articles in the Wanstead Village Directory commenting on a wide variety of subjects, including crime and safety, the parking consultation and the introduction of the green waste scheme. I am also a director trustee for Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure. Vision is

the independent body responsible for the leisure provision in Redbridge. I help to provide strategic advice according to the issues presented at the board. This gives me an insight into how the council process works and, if elected, will enable me to hit the ground running on the issues that will be faced by the new councillors post May. I have been an active campaigner on local issues, such as the reinstatement of the green garden waste scheme, which led to the council performing a U-turn. If elected, with my fellow colleagues Michelle Dunn and Scott Wilding, we will continue to stand up for the residents of Wanstead where we believe they are being unfairly treated by the council. We will continue our local engagement with the community and remain part of local groups, such as the Safer Neighbourhood Panel, to ensure the community is united on local issues. We are the community candidates for Wanstead. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

Wanstead Village 2018 Paul Donovan is a Labour Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

A

resident of Wanstead all my life, I have experienced the highs and lows of living in the area. Highs would include going to Aldersbrook Primary School and Wanstead High School, enjoying the open spaces of Wanstead Park and Flats and community initiatives over the years, such as street parties and the annual festival. The lows no doubt concern crime, being mugged back in 2001 on Christchurch Green and suffering as a victim of burglaries on a number of occasions. The cutting of police budgets as a result of reductions in central government funding is a major concern. It has seen fewer police on our streets and crime levels subsequently rising. Wanstead is a fantastic place to live but safe streets are vital for our families’ way of life and I am determined to fight alongside our Labour council to urge the government to reverse the police cuts. I have worked as a journalist for the past 25 years, using my journalistic skills, where appropriate, to voice community concerns, such as over a recent rat infestation around Tarzy Wood. More recently, I have been involved with fellow Labour candidates Daniel Morgan-Thomas and Jo Blackman in the campaign to restore a full service to the W12 bus route. We are also backing the 20’s Plenty speed reduction campaign, where the local community has expressed a desire to have such measures. Those who have read the recent series on pollution in the Wanstead Village Directory will not be surprised to learn that this is another issue I would like to see addressed in the area. A committed environmentalist, I have played a role in building up the community-based

support groups for Wanstead Park. I am also a member of the Wren Wildlife Group and an allotment holder. I am a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. I was also part of the local multi-faith Peace and Justice in East London group set up following the 9/11 attacks in America. Now, I feel it is time to put myself forward as a council candidate. The current Labour council can boast a proud record over its past four years in office, despite the pressure caused by an unprecedented 40% cut in the budget from the Tory government. Not only have they managed to defend and build on basic facilities like the libraries and waste collection but they are also committed to building a swimming pool in Wanstead. A swimming pool will be a major asset to an area that has been denied such facilities for so long. Also, as a lifelong Wanstead resident, I am acutely aware that this end of the borough can sometimes get forgotten. If elected, I will seek to ensure that our community is heard at the top table in the Town Hall. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

Wanstead Village 2018 Crispin Acton is a Liberal Democrat candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

retired after 41 years of work as a civil servant in the Department of Health in early 2017. Health must be a strong interest, as I am now a postgraduate student in public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, studying part-time. I have a particular interest in alcohol, drugs and health. I also have an interest in history, as that was my degree subject at university, and I usually have a history book on the go as my reading material. Other aspects of my life include being an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Wanstead. I have lived in Wanstead for 21 years, having moved here from Brentwood in 1996. I am mindful that many here enjoy a good quality of life in Wanstead, although some do not, and we should all be able to look for support when we face difficult times – Redbridge Council plays an important role in social care and other essential services. While living in Wanstead, I joined with neighbours to support our campaign for traffic calming in and around Wellington Road and Wellesley Road in 2012 after a child was injured here. I spoke at the then Area Committee meeting where this was discussed. The campaign was successful, although it took two years to come to fruition. Having recently missed the W12 bus on my way to an outpatient appointment at Whipps Cross Hospital, I believe that 30 minutes is much too long to wait for such an essential service. Transport for London needs to review its decision to cut the frequency of this route.

I joined the Liberal Democrats in 2001, partly because of the party’s consistent and strong support for this country’s membership of the EU, as well as its principled commitment to a fully democratic society. I have seen how the EU matters in my work on health and how the UK is stronger in global bodies, like the World Health Organization, when we work closely with other European countries, which are so similar to us in many respects. The world is an uncertain and fast-changing place and it is unwise to think we can repeat past glories by working alone. The major problems facing our local health services especially concern me. I believe that Redbridge Council can help to shine a light on these problems and show where local needs are not being met. Barts NHS Health Trust and other local NHS trusts are facing severe funding problems. These are not likely to be improved by Brexit; indeed, they risk becoming worse. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

T

he Epping Forest Centenary Trust, soon to become the Epping Forest Heritage Trust, has secured a grant from the City of London Corporation Community Grant scheme, which funds my part-time position as a Duck Champion Project Officer. Londoners are lucky to be living in one of the greenest cities in the world, with plenty of gardens and parks. And the residents of Redbridge, Newham and Waltham Forest can feel even more privileged to have parts of Epping Forest running through their neighbourhood. Whether in their local park, garden or Epping Forest, Londoners have plenty of opportunities to engage with wildlife and I’m hoping that through the Duck Champion Project, I can help people discover the natural treasures on their doorstep. The project focuses on wildfowl and how we can help support their wellbeing. I’m also hoping to increase the understanding of the unique forest pond environments and their inhabitants. Wildfowl is the collective name given to ducks, geese and swans. Some of them are permanent residents, others only stop by on their way to another country and others will pop in for regular visits. Birds are one of the easiest animal groups to observe and interact with, in particular wildfowl, as they like to hang out in our local ponds and waterways and won’t shy off when we approach them with some food. Wildfowl are perfectly adapted to the water environment: webbed feet for swimming fast, waterproof feathers and beaks that can filter food from the water. Did you know that most wildfowl are omnivores? This means, like us, they can eat both plants and animals and they depend on this variety of foods to stay healthy. Most wildfowl will dabble for food, submerging their head and neck into the water, whilst some will dive up to three metres to look for something to eat. Many of the waterfowl and the ponds of Epping Forest – including Hollow and Eagle Ponds and the ones in Wanstead Park – are

currently suffering the consequences of people’s good intentions turned bad. Feeding bread to birds has long been a popular practice but, just like for humans, bread is not the best type of food for birds and any bread left uneaten can pollute the ponds and attract unwanted rats. Bread doesn’t have much nutritional value but it fills ducks up so they are less likely to forage for foods they would naturally eat, which can lead to malnutrition. If you’re keen to learn more about Epping Forest’s wildfowl and what we as individuals can do to help support their wellbeing, do get in touch with me or attend one of our events. We are running free birdwatching walks for adults and families until the beginning of spring. Winter is the most interesting time to observe wildfowl as the UK gets many overwintering visitors from other countries. Over Easter and the May halfterm, we will run free drop-in events for the whole family, with fun craft activities and quizzes. I’ll also be joining some of the local groups’ main events, like the Highams Park Spring Festival on 13 May and the Wanstead Park BioBlitz on 24 June. If you’re a local school, you’re in for a treat: I am also offering free 30-minute to onehour educational sessions at schools with an optional free follow-up birdwatching and outdoor games session at your closest Epping Forest pond. This month, Ute will be leading free guided walks around Highams Park Lake (11 March) and Jubilee Pond (25 March). Booking required. Wanstead Village 2018 Ann Williams is a Green Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why she thinks she deserves your vote on 3 May

W

hen I moved to Wanstead 30 years ago (having been a Londoner all my life), I already knew the area, and was immediately attracted by the open spaces, the uncrowded neighbourhoods and the flourishing High Street with its village-like atmosphere. Since I arrived, things have changed somewhat, but the green lungs of Wanstead and Leyton Flats remain, along with Christchurch and George Greens, and the spinney on the corner of New Wanstead and the High Street, now known as Tarzy Wood. I wanted to preserve these spaces, both for those who will come after us and for the wellbeing of the current residents. As a member of the local branch of Friends of the Earth, I participated in the Seeds for Snaresbrook project, which encouraged the sowing of wild flowers around street trees. This project continues in some streets, though in others (including Wanstead High Street), piles of rubbish are more in evidence. Environmental factors affect many issues. Air quality, a subject which concerns many people in Redbridge, is an obvious example, and connected with traffic congestion, one of the prime sources of air pollution. Restrictions on parking are not popular, but if we want to breathe clean air, then we need to switch from using cars to walking, cycling and public transport, and the council should adopt and implement policies which favour pedestrians, cyclists and buses. Air pollution has a particularly bad effect on young children and the elderly, increasing the pressure on our already struggling health service. Another major issue in our locality is housing. The upward pressure on house prices makes it hard for quite affluent people to buy or

rent homes in Wanstead. Developers keen to maximise profits price out both people of modest means and those on the council’s housing list, for whom even ‘affordable’ property is too expensive. The provision of genuine social housing should be foremost in council policy. It is essential the council pressurises builders to include meaningful percentages of social and affordable housing in their developments, and also implements its powers of bringing accommodation left empty by its owners into occupation. As with air quality, this is not a standalone issue; people in housing deprivation and substandard accommodation are prone to both physical and mental ill health, which in turn adds to the pressure on our NHS. It is essential to see that the links between different issues – air quality, traffic, housing, and health – are intertwined. This is called ‘holistic’ – or more simply, ‘joined-up’ – thinking, which is what the Green Party aims to supply. Other parties may have adopted a few green policies but only the Green Party puts the environment at the heart of its manifesto. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. A

t this time of the year, when you are planning your holiday schedule for 2018, allow me – as an independent travel agent with 25 years of experience – to help you with some ideas. This year has got off to a cracking start. As well as handling all my new enquiries, I have been up to town attending events, such as the prestigious annual showcase hosted by GP Associates every January, bringing all the luxury hotels they represent worldwide under one roof. Take a look at the beautiful hotels they represent: The Danai in Halkidiki, which commands beautiful views over a white-sand beach; Das Steue in Berlin, with rooms directly looking into the zoo and a private entrance to the zoo for their guests; and Esperanza in Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas, that iconic beachfront paradise. Tour operators and hoteliers have been visiting me, too. Seasons is one of my favourite luxury tour operators, especially after they took me on an all-expenses trip to the Maldives, in which I sampled four of the luxury hotels from their portfolio. I have worked with them for years and appreciate their ethos in common with my own, to pay close attention to detail. The new marketing representative for JA Resorts came too – not a household brand but you may know them by individual hotel names, such as the all-inclusive Jebel Ali Resort in Dubai or Enchanted Island in the Seychelles. She reminded me about the world-class childcare available at Jebel Ali in the form of an all-day baby crèche adhering to UK standards, a toddler club, a coolzone for children and a chillzone for teenagers, and was able to confirm the new BA nonstop flight to the Seychelles is proving very popular.

Danai Beach Resort in Halkidiki, Greece

With Emirates Airlines launching its new daily service from Stansted to Dubai, I have seen an upturn in bookings, not only to the United Arab Emirates but also connecting via Dubai to Asia, Africa and Australasia. I love planning holiday itineraries – be it a luxury beach break on a sun-drenched Caribbean island or a quick half-term dash to a European beach resort, a cultural journey through the Indian subcontinent, a bespoke tour of Peru and the Galapagos Islands, a drive down the Californian coast, wine-tasting in Argentina or cooking in Tuscany, to name but a few. Did you know there’s a new airline, Primera Air, flying non-stop from Stansted to New York, Boston, Washington and Toronto? And there are great hotel rates throughout North America. By the time you read this, I will have completed my tour of Cuba and will be heading home from Florida. Where would you like to be heading home from this year? NCT Redbridge and District Branch committee members outline the services they provide to support and guide new parents, and encourage others to join them in their rewarding work

W

e are the Redbridge and District NCT, your local branch of the National Childbirth Trust charity. Just like branches all around the country, we are run entirely by volunteers – all members of our local communities. We have young families and most of us also juggle working or studying in addition to our volunteering. We seem to be able to find time for it, united by our passion and enthusiasm for NCT and the work of the charity in reaching and supporting new parents. We have 10 committee members and we all take on different roles, from coordinating the branch, managing the accounts, setting up ‘bumps and babies’ events, hosting coffee mornings and running our gold standard nearly new sales. Many of the roles offer good CV skills, and for some volunteers, they have been a lifeline in getting back into work after having children. Each role comes with its own challenges but we have formed friendships, learnt new skills and continue to provide support to new parents in the local area. All of this combined is what makes volunteering with the NCT such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Because the branch is run entirely by volunteers, we can only offer support to the community if we have the voluntary resources to do so. Thanks to some new committee members, we have a refreshed team and ambition to expand the groups and services we offer, and we are full of ideas we would love to get off the ground in 2018. Our famous nearly new sale runs twice a year at Christ Church hall in Wanstead. It is a great opportunity for people to find new homes for pre-loved baby, toddler and children’s items that are still in excellent condition

NCT nearly new sale in Wanstead

but no longer needed. Our sales are hugely popular events and everyone seems to bag a bargain. We also run coffee mornings in Wanstead, South Woodford, Buckhurst Hill and Barkingside. These are hosted by local parents who are interested in making new friends and having a local network of support. Finally, we offer back to work events. These are friendly, informal group meet-ups hosted by volunteers who have an HR background, where you can chat through any concerns you have about returning to the workplace. This is another great opportunity to meet with other parents who are going through the same, sometimes daunting, phase of parenthood. We are now working to launch bumps and babies groups, paediatric first aid courses and coffee mornings in additional towns within our branch area, including Ilford and Loughton, if we can get regular hosts in these areas. So, please do spread the word. For more information on the Redbridge and District NCT, email coordinator.redbridge@nct.org.uk. The next nearly new sale will take place on 24 March at Christ Church hall from 11am to 12.15pm. Visit wavidi.co/nct

Wanstead Park 2018 Chris Pallet is a Liberal Democrat candidate for the new Wanstead Park ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

grew up on the Aldersbrook estate and have lived in Redbridge for most of my life. I went to Aldersbrook Primary and later, Wanstead High School. I’m pretty fed up with national politics at the moment and very worried about Brexit and what it will do to the economy. I accept we (narrowly) voted to leave, but I don’t see why that means we have to have the economically damaging hard Brexit the Conservatives seem to want. Only the Liberal Democrats are clear that a strong relationship with the EU (including staying inside the Single Market and Customs Union) is the best way to safeguard and maximise future prosperity. But local elections are about local issues. We need to do better on recycling. Government figures show that Labour-run Redbridge recycled only 28% of household waste in 2015–2016. This puts Redbridge in the bottom third of councils. Labour’s record on recycling commercial waste is not much better. Astonishingly, we don’t even collect cardboard from local schools. We also need to do more to tackle air pollution. Air pollution is a silent killer, shortening the lives of 40,000 people every year. It’s bad enough that this affects all of us as we go about our daily lives – but how can we accept the harm it does to children living or attending schools near busy roads? Housing is another huge issue. We are failing to build enough homes for young people and they have been priced out of the market. Incredibly, in four years this Labour council has built only 39 new council houses. We all know about the pressures the NHS is under. Fundamentally, the NHS needs more

money and only the Liberal Democrats are honest about that. We would add a penny on to income tax (earmarked for the NHS) to turn things around. But while the NHS is run centrally, local councils can have a big impact. They are responsible for public health and if more of us could lead healthier lives (eat better, exercise more), that would reduce pressure on the NHS. Councils are also responsible for social care, and hospitals like Whipps can only free up beds if support is there for elderly people who are ready to be discharged but are not able to look after themselves. And, of course, the basics must not be forgotten. The rubbish needs to be collected, the streets cleaned and the parks maintained. National politics is in a bad place at the moment, but fundamentally, it is about local communities working together to resolve issues and make things better. That is something I am very happy to be a part of. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

ecently, several things have come together to concentrate minds on our use of plastic. Not before time. David Attenborough’s wonderful Blue Planet II TV series did not pull punches, making all too clear the results of our overuse of plastic and our casual attitude to its disposal. Who can forget seeing dolphins, turtles and even whales entangled in plastic or ingesting the stuff? In both cases, a slow and painful death. Albatrosses fly hundreds of miles to bring back food for their chicks. That food can be plastic they have mistaken for fish. Another death sentence. Autopsies on fulmars found dead on beaches reveal stomach contents including items such as balloons, cling film, toothbrushes and packaging. Single-use plastic toothpicks will perforate the stomach of any bird that swallows it. David Attenborough sums it up:“Plastic is now found everywhere in the ocean, from its surface to its greatest depth.” And what damage it does! Then there is the recent decision by China to stop importing our waste plastic for recycling, which has caused a major headache for those in power. One hopes they are not casting around for an alternative country that will conveniently rid us of our rubbish. One would hope they are thinking seriously about our use of plastic, much of which is unnecessary and would seem to benefit the packaging industry rather than anyone else.

of the founding of the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers. Baskets will be for sale at the fair, of course, and you may have seen the current display of environmentally friendly shopping bags in Wanstead Library’s display cases. Pieces include work by Mary Butcher, the queen of her field and sometime resident basketmaker at the V&A Museum. Three pieces were loaned by Mary Masaba, recent winner of the Creative Basketry prize and John Page, head of basketry at City Lit, also has work on display. Naturally, there will be members of the Basketmakers Association at the fair. Habiba Ahmed, the borough’s recycling officer, will be there as well, to give advice and information on reducing waste and running drop-in sessions for families with some fun decorating of cloth bags. It’s not too late to apply for a stall at this event to publicise, demonstrate or sell your own environmentally friendly goods. It would definitely be worth spending part of your Saturday meandering among the stalls and enjoying some tasty food, plastic packaging free, of course.

So, oceans and China… obviously time for a change. It’s good to think globally and act locally and that is exactly what the Wanstead Upcycling Fair on 31 March is all about. So much of the everyday plastic we use is bags for shopping. Even ‘bags for life’ are made of plastic! What did people use before plastic bags? Why, shopping bags, of course, a wonderful invention! No reason why we shouldn’t be using shopping bags today and the fair will show us a variety of creatively made bags and baskets from recycled and biodegradable materials. No harm will be caused to the environment at the end of their useful lives. Maybe it’s time for the basket to make a comeback. After all, it is the 450th anniversary To advertise, call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

Wanstead Park 2018 Sheila Bain is a Labour Party candidate for the new Wanstead Park ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why she thinks she deserves your vote on 3 May

I

first stood as a councillor in 2014 and was privileged to be elected to represent the former Wanstead ward, where I live. I was born and grew up in east London and spent my career working in local government for various local authorities. I moved to Wanstead some 30 years ago and raised my three children here, so know the area very well. Wanstead is a great place to live with excellent schools, a vibrant High Street, lovely parks and open spaces and a strong sense of community. I became a councillor to stand up for Wanstead to ensure that it continued to thrive and get its fair share of resources in this time of unprecedented central government cuts to council funding. Working with colleagues, I’ve delivered for the local community in Wanstead with a planned new swimming pool, investment in our schools and children’s centres, a newly refurbished library, continued funding for the Wanstead Festival and the implementation of the cycle quiet way. There’s been a longstanding need for a swimming pool locally and with Labour running the council this is now going to happen. Work will start in the autumn on a public pool at Wanstead High School, where we’re also carrying out a programme of building improvements. Within weeks of becoming a councillor in 2014, I acted with colleagues to tackle the school places crisis locally, where children were being allocated schools up to five miles away as there were not enough primary school places in Wanstead. We provided an additional reception class at Nightingale School from September 2014 to run through to Year 6. We’ve protected early years investment by continuing to provide two children’s centres, one in Wanstead and the other in Aldersbrook.

As the cabinet member with responsibility for libraries I’ve worked to keep all our libraries open, with Wanstead Library being completely refurbished recently and Aldersbrook Library continuing to provide a well-used service. I am involved in the local community and sit on the management committee of our great local community centre, Wanstead House. I’m also on the Wanstead Business Partnership and a member of the Wren nature group. I hold fortnightly surgeries and residents can always come to see me to raise any concerns and I’m regularly out in the ward meeting people. Community safety is very important to me and with our Labour Council I am fighting for proper government funding for our police to tackle the increasing crime in the borough, alongside proper funding for our NHS and social care services. I hope you’ll give me the opportunity to continue this work and to not only represent the people of Wanstead Park, but help to improve the quality of life for everyone in Redbridge. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

Wanstead Park 2018 Lucy Bostick is a Conservative Party candidate for the new Wanstead Park ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why she thinks she deserves your vote on 3 May

I

have grown up and lived in Redbridge and the surrounding area for my whole life. Wanstead is a special place to me, with the spirit and personality of a village but nestled on the edge of the East End of London. We are fortunate to benefit from Epping Forest and the parklands on our doorstep. I want to become a councillor here as I want to serve my community. Community liaison is the best way to stay informed of specific problems and promote full resident engagement, like those associated with the Courtney Hotel or the environs of Wanstead Park. Where residents want them, I will support implementing measures like street lighting or cameras – nothing will be imposed unilaterally. I am a firm believer that residents should work together to help improve the community and the role of a councillor should be to make this happen. I work in the City in financial services regulation and this has given me skills and experience in dealing with sensitive situations and different personalities to secure the best possible outcome. I can bring these skills to the table in council matters. I want residents to feel and be safe in their community and for their property to be secure. I promise to listen and follow through with issues concerning Wanstead residents, whether through local groups or on a one-toone basis to remedy problems. Through close contact with the local neighbourhood watch, I can be the representative to the council to get a local solution to a local issue. I will also ensure the garden waste collections remain a free service and push for more and better recycling services at the doorstep.

Preserving the environment also applies to the surroundings outside our own front doors. As your councillor, I would seek to tackle the issues of fly-tipping, the proliferation of pigeons and the general deterioration of street cleanliness under the current Labour administration. If elected with Pat Bennett, we will ensure the people of Wanstead Park are properly heard in all matters that affect you. The council should be promoting community wellbeing, not detracting from it. Consultations over parking should be taken seriously by the council and the will of the residents should be respected, not brushed aside. It is the taxpayers who fund council spending, and the council should be accountable to the taxpayer in how that money is spent. We have to prioritise spending on services that affect the everyday lives of our residents over excessive pay for short-term consultants the council employs. As your local councillors, we would challenge excessive and unnecessary spending. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

Wanstead Village 2018 Daniel Morgan-Thomas is a Labour Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why he thinks he deserves your vote on 3 May

I

’ve lived in Snaresbrook since 2001 and been based in north-east London for most of my life. My late mother ran her own business in Wanstead and South Woodford and I went to primary school here too, so I’ve grown up feeling part of the community in Wanstead. I have been a member of the Labour Party locally since 2009 and been happy to get to know many neighbours and local residents through my activism, as well as taking part in several local campaigns, including defending Whipps Cross from cuts, protesting against the closure of Wanstead Police Station and, most recently, standing up for users of the W12 bus service alongside my fellow candidates, Jo and Paul. Campaigning is incredibly important to me as it provides an opportunity to engage with other local residents and also to constructively work with others to resolve the issues facing our community. For example, our W12 petition has gathered over 3,000 signatures and we are now working with the council to lobby TfL into changing the timetable back to its previous frequency. The new Wanstead Village ward is my home as well as my constituency, so I genuinely want to be part of a council administration that can listen to concerns from our area and work to improve the borough, despite the burden of Tory austerity on the council budget. As a former carer, I’m especially aware of those in our community who rely on both voluntary and local authority-funded care, whether they are elderly or younger adults or disabled children. We are very lucky to have a wonderful resource like the Allan Burgess Centre on Wanstead High Street for our older people as well as a borough-wide support group for carers in Redbridge; nevertheless I

hope to be able to stand up for the needs of the elderly and disabled as a councillor, both in making the case for increased funding demands at a local and national level and in promoting accessibility across our local area. As a young – 24-year-old – resident of the area, I hope this election will see young people take an interest in local politics. I know there are plenty of young people in Wanstead who already care about their neighbours and community and I’ve been encouraged by the interest I’ve had from the young people I’ve spoken to on the doorstep – it would be great to take that further as a young councillor. Wanstead is a very special part of Redbridge, but being on the periphery of the borough has sometimes made it seem remote from the wider concerns of Redbridge Council, particularly under previous administrations. I’m determined to put us back on the map if elected, supporting local businesses and community groups and keeping our area thriving, benefiting from Labour’s strategic vision for the borough as a whole. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

Wanstead Village 2018 Michelle Dunn is a Conservative Party candidate for the new Wanstead Village ward in the upcoming Redbridge Council elections. Here’s why she thinks she deserves your vote on 3 May

W

anstead – which I am proud to call home – is a unique and exciting place to live, full of creative energy and community spirit. I have lived in Wanstead for over 30 years. Since my election in 2002, I have held cabinet posts for Highways and Housing. I am a former deputy leader of the Conservative Group and have been a councillor for the former Wanstead ward for 16 years. As a councillor and resident, I am dedicated to serving the community in many different areas, including promoting a cleaner environment, fighting high-rise developments, road safety, transport and housing issues. One of the key reasons why I wanted to become a councillor is that I am dedicated to serving the community and enjoy dealing with the concerns of residents in many diverse areas, such as promoting a cleaner environment (helping alongside my colleagues on the litter pick on the green). I attend regular meetings of the residents’ associations and neighbourhood watch meetings, and work with the police and ward panel to try and make Wanstead a safer, better place to live. Over the last 16 years, I have developed an effective local network to help address residents’ key issues. As one of the three candidates for Wanstead Village, if elected, I am determined to restore local democracy to Wanstead. Residents must have a meaningful say instead of decisions being taken behind closed doors in Ilford. As my colleague Steve has stated,

the community is at the heart of the work of a councillor. I am proud to have played an important part in the campaign to reinstate the free garden waste collection service in Redbridge, which was well regarded by residents. Through a petition to the council, we managed to secure a rethink of its decision to scrap the free service and perform a long-overdue U-turn. However, there is certainly more to be done to improve the deterioration in street cleansing and fly-tipping in Wanstead and we are holding the council to account on this. If elected in May with my fellow Conservative ward colleagues, Scott Wilding and Steve Wilks, we are firmly committed to working with the residents of Wanstead, helping with all problems and issues that arise, be they small or large, so that we can aspire to a cleaner, better and safer borough. Our long-term commitment to our community is one key reason to vote for us on 3 May. Redbridge Council elections will take place on 3 May. Visit wavidi.co/vote2018

A

long time ago now – it was 1979 – I attended Bath Academy of Art to study for a degree in Fine Art. The course was three years and the college was in a small village, situated between Bath and Chippenham, called Corsham. Some of the student accommodation was in a street of 17th-century Flemish cottages leading up to a stately home called Corsham Court, which contained the college’s library. The owner of the house used to stride around his grounds calling after his beloved golden Labrador, Hector. The village was very picturesque, having a high street with a good hotel, including a basement bowling alley at one end, a pub in the middle and another at the opposite end – I wonder why I remember these details! The three-year course passed with students creating work in allocated spaces and tutors visiting and critiquing their work. My final degree show consisted of four paintings – these were quite large, being 10 feet by 6 feet – which I painted onto stretched canvas while they lay on the ground. My fellow students were a friendly crowd who made good use of the village amenities and one of them became my wife. The image featured this month is of the wonderful Christchurch Green, which helps make our own High Street so unique and adds to the wonderful green spaces contained in and around Wanstead. Over Christmas, I was given some socks with jigsaw pieces on them which celebrated the life of British cartographer John Spilsbury (1739–1769), who is credited as having invented the jigsaw puzzle. Spilsbury came up with a novel way to inspire students to take up his profession. He cut up his maps into small pieces and asked them to put them back together. And so, the foundation for modern jigsaws was laid and people still enjoy the challenge they present to this day. I will be exhibiting the remaining Wanstead jigsaws and original paintings in The Stow Brothers estate agents towards the end of April. Thank you to all those who have purchased a jigsaw to date and helped raise £103.10 for the charity Bloodwise. To advertise, call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

Stow Brothers are bursting with pride to have been ranked 14 in the ‘Top 100 Best Estate Agents the UK’ in the Best Estate Agent Guide 2018, a nationwide award supported by Rightmove, the UK’s leading property website. That means we are rated in the top 100 out of 25,000 estate and lettings agents in the country! Not only that we have been awarded ‘Double Exceptional’ for our service in both Sales and Lettings, making us one of only 87 agents across the entire UK who can claim this prestigious accolade. We are thrilled to be recognised for our friendly, warm and helpful service, in all aspects of buying and letting, as reflected in our hundreds of positive reviews. We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us to get where we are today, and look forward to meeting and helping even more happy customers in the coming year.
