Compassion is a simple yet immensely powerful trait. The desire to alleviate the suffering of others is an emotional response that – even if one is unable to prevent the cause of such pain – signifies an aspect of humanity that should not be taken for granted in this day and age. The sheer volume of deserving cases, however – on both a national and international scale, not to mention locally – can often be the cause of a certain amount of compassion fatigue. Where should we direct our time, energy and money when there are so many worthy recipients?

Clearly there is no right answer to this moral quandary – what may seem a less deserving cause to some may be a life's passion for others. Of course, one way to reduce the dilemma of deciding which charity to support is to support them all, or at least as many as is humanly possibly (see pages 38-39). Not that there is any suggestion that those who follow such a dedicated path are doing so for any kind of easy option; far from it.

For the majority of us, any charitable donations we make are a reactive response, as opposed to those who proactively use their time to seek out financial contributions for their chosen cause. It is easy to ignore the volunteer rattling a half-empty (or half-full) tin on the High Street, but if we take a moment to appreciate the work that has gone into placing that collector there (see page 18), perhaps it won't seem like such a big ask to offer up some loose change.

As human beings, we exert an undeniably powerful force over the world in which we live – a little compassion and thoughtfulness can go a long way to making it a force for good. As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility, and that responsibility is something we should all be aware of. From spending a lifetime working for the good of others, to showing a little consideration for the local wildlife with which we share the land (see pages 14-15), no act of kindness should be too big or too small.

Improvement works to the historic High Stone at the junction of Hollybush Hill and New Wanstead have been completed. The base of the Grade IIlisted structure – which is on the English Heritage At Risk Register due to a "lack of long-term maintenance" – has been raised and moved forwards to give the landmark increased prominence.

same location since the 18th century, although the obelisk was replaced in the 1930s after being

damage by a vehicle.

The improvements were jointly funded by Redbridge Council and English Heritage.

The Redbridge Music Society will be hosting an evening of jazz at Wanstead Library this month. Jazz pianist Keith Nichols, who is considered to be one of the foremost authorities on classic jazz and ragtime, will be "playing in his inimitable style and… amusing his audience with many stories and anecdotes". Keith was born in Ilford and now performs around the world, while also lecturing on jazz history at the Royal Academy. The performance will take place from 8pm on 3 March (tickets: £6).

The Redbridge Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) has been commissioned

by Redbridge Public Health to hold borough-wide tuberculosis (TB) awareness sessions throughout March. "TB in Redbridge and in London in general is at an unacceptable level," said Ola Kanu, the project coordinator.

Two Forest School parents will take on "the world's toughest endurance event" next month to raise money for Whizz-Kidz, a charity that provides mobility equipment for disabled children.

Leyton and Wanstead MP John Cryer will be holding a fundraising swim at the London Aquatics Centre – one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics – next month in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.

The event will take place on 3 April and will consist of two races: a school relay and a 30-minute endurance relay, in which John Cryer will be captaining a crossparty team of fellow MPs. "The work of the Alzheimer's Society is vital if we are going to one day beat the disease," said John.

Last month, Virgin Media rolled out their London Underground WiFi service to 10 more stations, including Wanstead, Leytonstone, Leyton and Newbury Park.

There are now a total of 131 stations out of 270 that offer the service – which was initially launched at selected stations ahead of the Olympics in 2012 – enabling customers with Virgin Media, O2, Vodafone or EE contracts to get online for free when travelling underground, albeit only while in the stations or on the platforms.

At last month's Redbridge Mayor's Community Awards 2014, Wanstead's very own guerrilla gardener Marian Temple was presented with an award for making the borough greener. As well as maintaining the planters along Wanstead High Street and the Corner House

garden, Marian also opens up her own garden annually in aid of Amnesty International. Other winners included children's clothes shop Sid and Evie's in South Woodford for best business contribution and Redbridge Lakes for their environmental work.

o for a stroll on Wanstead Flats early on a bright and not-too-windy day between March and early June and you will hear the wonderful aural outpourings of territorial Skylarks singing high above you. And if you keep your eyes open as you walk along one of the tracks that run just east of Centre Road, you may well see birds feeding out in the open, even on the model aircraft runway.

With the arguable exception of the Nightingale, the Skylark is probably the UK's most celebrated songster. Its exuberant song can be delivered on the wing or even from the top of an anthill, and particularly driven birds have been known to sing continuously for half an hour, though this is rare. Generally, it is not a tricky bird to hear and see – if you are prepared to travel. But if you live in the Wanstead area you don't even have to do that, because right here, on Wanstead Flats, we have the closest breeding population to the centre of London.

In many ways it defies belief that the second or third biggest concentration of larks in the capital can survive here at all. Grass fires are common in the summer months and, towards the end of the football season, desperate defenders or wayward strikers often send balls into the breeding area. And – despite warning notices – some dog-walkers are happy to let their canines stray from the paths and gambol in the long grass, where the Skylarks nest.

The birds build their simple nests and raise their young on the ground in the areas of longer, unmown grass. The eggs hatch after a fortnight and the young can fly after another two weeks or so. And if the weather is good, and food plentiful (the young are fed insects), a Skylark pair may produce a second or even a third family.

The area is also important for another groundnesting species, the Meadow Pipit, which has a much shorter song flight, one which ends with the bird 'parachuting' to the ground. In the spring of 2011, there were more Meadow Pipit territories on Wanstead Flats than anywhere else in London.

The big problem both species face is disturbance during the breeding season. It's not a problem if people walk, jog, ride their

bikes or walk their dogs on the areas of shorter grass or along the main tracks through the long grass. Problems arise, however, when they do these things in the long grass. That can cause the larks to abandon their attempts to breed.

Now, a group of dog-walkers have joined forces with local naturalists to encourage others to keep their dogs on the leash and on the paths in the long-grass area during the breeding season, which runs from early March through to late August. And on Saturday 15 and Saturday 29 March there will be special walks around the Skylarks' breeding area for dog-walkers and their dogs. An Epping Forest keeper and members of the Wren Wildlife Group will point out the Skylarks and Meadow Pipits and explain something of their lifestyle and ecology.

Britain's Skylark population has fallen by twothirds since the mid-1970s, largely as a result of changed farming practices. We should be proud of the fact that Wanstead Flats is the best place for several million Londoners to see and hear these wonderful birds, so let's make sure we give it the protection it deserves.

The recently-formed Wanstead Marie Curie Fundraising Group have recruited over 30 collectors, ready to turn the High Street yellow for this month's annual Great Daffodil Appeal. Jill Playford reports

T

he Wanstead Marie Curie Fundraising Group was formed in June 2013. Two founder members had previously belonged to the Romford and Dagenham branch as this was their closest group at the time. It was then decided to form one closer to home because of the community spirit and generosity of the people in Wanstead.

Publicity soon resulted in new members and the kind offer of a free meeting venue from the United Reformed Church.

There are now eight enthusiastic and committed members, who all live locally, and we have expanded to cover the Woodford area as well.

Members bring a range of experiences and interests to the table and we all have different skills to contribute. We all agree it's more fun to raise money as part of a group rather than as individuals and we set targets to aim for; our current target is £5,000 in our first year. Some group members have personal reasons for supporting Marie Curie, having used the charity's services for family and friends, while some find volunteering a rewarding use of their spare time.

Our aim is to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care by organising events, holding street and supermarket collections and delivering daffodil boxes to businesses and encouraging them to support the charity all year round by displaying permanent collection boxes. To date, we have raised nearly £2,500, but it is hoped that this total will rise dramatically this month.

Daffodil boxes will be delivered by group members to over 40 local businesses to enable them to encourage customers to donate money.

We hope to raise over £1,000 from this activity.

Six days of collections are also planned during March, including two in Wanstead itself. The first of these will be on 8 March in the Co-op store and the second on 15 March – London's Daffodil Day – along the length of Wanstead High Street.

with colourful collectors and daffodil badges. On average, each collection raises £350 per day.

The funds raised help to provide free home nursing care for people at the end of their lives and enable families to receive the support they need at a very challenging time. Each hour of nursing care costs Marie Curie £20 to provide, so it is rewarding for us to calculate how many hours of care our fundraising efforts will provide.

Looking ahead, we have plans to hold a tea party in June, a stall at the Wanstead Festival in September and Christmas collections.

We would welcome new members to join our friendly group in order to maximise our fundraising activities and develop awareness of Marie Curie Cancer Care in the local area. The time commitment is flexible and people can contribute in whatever way they wish.

Understanding cancer In the fifth of a series of articles looking at different types of cancers, Wanstead resident Dr Frank Chinegwundoh MBE explains the symptoms and risks of bowel cancer

I

n England, bowel cancer is the third most common type of cancer. Two-thirds of bowel cancers develop in the colon, with the remaining third developing in the rectum.

The bowel is part of the digestive system. It has two main purposes: to absorb energy, water and nutrients from the food you eat and to pass out the remaining waste products from your body in the form of stools. The bowel is divided up into the small and large bowel. For the purposes of discussion, bowel cancer refers to cancer developing in the large bowel. The large bowel consists of the colon and the rectum (the part of the large bowel that is attached to the anus).

The symptoms of bowel (colorectal) cancer can include: bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo; a change in bowel habits lasting for three weeks or more (especially looser stools); unexplained weight loss; extreme tiredness for no obvious reason; and a pain or lump in your tummy. You might experience one, some or all of these symptoms, or none at all.

Remember, most symptoms will not be bowel cancer. If you are worried about any symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor or call the Bowel Cancer UK information and support service.

The risk of bowel cancer increases with age (approximately 72% of bowel cancer cases develop in people who are aged 65 years or over) and currently everyone between the ages of 60 and 69 are offered bowel cancer screening every two years. The screening programme is also being extended in England to those aged 70 to 75. Screening is carried out by taking a small stool sample and sending it to a lab to test for the presence of blood (faecal occult blood test). In addition, an extra screening test is being introduced over the next three years for all people aged 55.

The doctor might feel a cancer of the rectum by inserting a gloved finger. The diagnosis should usually be confirmed by biopsy, in which a small (2mm diameter) sample of tissue is taken

painlessly with forceps inserted through a small tube. To spot cancers further along the colon, the doctor will use either a flexible sigmoidoscope (to see the part of the colon nearest the rectum, including the sigmoid [bendy] colon on the left side of the abdomen) or a colonoscope (to see the whole colon, including the part on the right side of the abdomen). A piece of any abnormality is pinched off and sent to a pathologist who makes the diagnosis of cancer by examining the sample under a microscope.

Surgery to remove the part of the colon or rectum housing the cancer is generally the treatment of choice. This can be supplemented with chemotherapy if the cancer is more advanced. If the cancer is caught early, then a cure rate of 90% can be expected.

Absolute gift We rightly expect the NHS to be there for us from cradle to grave and are quick to criticise any shortcomings. But there's one thing they need that can't be bought and that's blood, says local resident Eileen Flinter

I

n this country, unlike some others, where blood donors are paid, we will all depend on the kindness of strangers when that medical emergency affects someone we love – or us.

It's an amazing system and the fact that it has worked so well since 1946 is truly staggering and a tribute to us Brits.

We're all individuals, but we're not that different – there are only four main blood groups between the lot of us. You may be O (most common), A,B or AB (least common). When you give blood, you will be told what group you are in – this in itself could be useful knowledge to have if you turn out to be in a rare group.

But – and there's always a but – 96% of us have never donated any blood (a heartfelt thanks to the 4% that are keeping the rest of us safe). Some may be too young. Few will be too old, however, as the upper limit to register is 65, but regular donors can go on and on, irrespective of age.

Most of us have over 25 trillion red cells – some 25 million cells die off every day and are replaced.

When donations are separated out, the red cells are used to replace those lost not only in accidents, but also in surgery and after childbirth.

People with sickle cell anaemia also need red cells regularly to carry on their lives. Red cells can be stored for up to 35 days – but rarely stay on the shelf that long.

Where can we give blood? Well, there's no excuse – in the next couple of months there will be sessions at Wanstead House, Ilford Town Hall, Sir James Hawkey Hall, Connaught School for Girls, Baitul Ahad Mosque, Leytonstone Methodist Church and Sainsbury's in Chingford – and that's only about half the venues available. The Give Blood website will tell you everything you need to know, from what to wear (loose sleeves) to what can be done with blood platelets (very useful for cancer patients, and because platelets only last for five days, there is a constant need to replenish the supplies). Alternatively, ask at your surgery or look out for local notices.

Giving blood is easy – it truly doesn't hurt and you don't have to look at the arm being used (that's my own personal tip). The paperwork and the waiting usually take longer than the actual donation, so take a book, phone or MP3 player and just chill, or even chat to your neighbour, you've got something in common after all.

We all know that people who do things for others are happier, stronger and enjoy life more than those who don't. It's true, so why not give it a go and maybe, when you've done that, you might even think how someone could make use of your heart, eyes or other bits when you don't need them any more.

Fingers crossed that you never have to receive this gift, but it's a great present to be able to give someone else.

When Vision RCL were invited by Redbridge Drama Centre to help deliver an exciting theatre programme for children, they jumped at the chance to host Splosh! in Wanstead, says arts officer Sam Goodey

S

ixth Sense Theatre for Young People, in partnership with Salisbury Playhouse, will proudly present Splosh! in Wanstead this month. It's a play for two- to five-yearolds and their families and, for many children, it will be their first ever theatre experience and one we intend to make enjoyable, and hopefully leave the little ones – and big ones – hungry for more.

Join us on an imaginative and exciting journey through bath time and watch those little faces light up as they relate to their own everyday bath toys that will come to life in this happy tale.

This unique production is currently touring around the country, stopping off in Salisbury, Exeter, Birmingham, Derby, Colchester and, luckily for us, Redbridge as well, making it easier for you and your family to take part in the arts.

Splosh! supports the Early Years curriculum by encouraging language skills through play and empowering families to develop communication at home, which promotes child development and social and academic achievement. The show uses multisensory design, music and puppetry to help children and families explore communicative play at bath time.

On the day of the performance, audience members will be met by one of the touring team, whose job it is to make the experience completely enjoyable and stress free. Those watching the show will be invited to sit in a semicircle around the performance space on special bath mats. The piece is performed by two actors, Andy Kelly and Eloise Secker, who play Zac and Elly. Although the children will be asked to sit quietly to watch the performance, there will be times when they will be encouraged to join in and call out to the actors.

If it is your child's first theatre experience, you may find it helpful to talk through the story with them before the show – just visit the Sixth Sense Theatre for Young People website, where you will

be able to view the story to help build the preshow excitement and prepare you all.

All grown-ups attending will receive a copy of the Little Book of Fun, a small booklet that includes 10 ideas for creative play at bath time.

The fun can also continue at home, as on the website there's fun stuff to print out and colour in, a quiz to test your Splosh! knowledge plus a fun memory game too.

Splosh! is about 30 minutes in duration, and audiences are invited to stay and play for 10 minutes or so afterwards for a spot of bubble bursting with the performers.

In the third of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to life-long charity worker Doreen Golding, the ever-giving Pearly Queen of Old Kent Road

"T

hank God for Febreze!" said Doreen Golding, Wanstead's very own Pearly Queen, when I asked her how she keeps those intricately bejewelled and buttoned clothes she wears when performing official duties. While it defies the imagination to consider how Henry Croft, the original Pearly King, kept his suit nice enough to not repel the very people from whom he cajoled donations in the early 1900s, it transpires that Doreen doesn't rely on just one, but has in a dedicated wardrobe three skirts, five waistcoats, three hats and blouses galore (her words, not mine).

Although she is definitely a Wansteadian (she has lived here for over 50 years), Doreen's title is from the Old Kent Road, where her first husband was born, "and I am his Queen," she explains.

Nowadays, apparently it's not passed down from the same family, nor is it a costermongers-only thing. Instead, you get elected or nominated for your charity work. "I moved here in the 1960s," explains Doreen, "but had already been doing charity with a group in Forest Gate. We did variety shows to raise money; the Royal Stratford and even the Prince Charles near Leicester Square. But, aware we weren't professionals, we decided to take our entertainment and do the rounds of residential homes, direct to people themselves."

Her second husband, a cab driver, has similar inclinations. "Cab drivers do a lot of charity work," Doreen continues, "For example, on the third Sunday of January every year we all do the Mad Hatters Tea Party, where the taxi drivers bring the children in and we meet and greet the sunshine coaches and kids, see them in and stay on show."

Doreen "got into buttons", as the saying goes, in the early 1990s, and in 2000 she was made Freeman of the City of London for her charity work. But charity was part of her life long before

that. It is so much a part of her that, when asked what she is most proud of, her charitable works aren't what she first talks about. This, despite awards and citations, such as the one from the Variety Club, about which she says: "It's in a nice frame on my wall. It's funny, the year before they decided to hold the meeting to award it in England. But the year I got my certificate, the conference was in New Zealand. We just couldn't get there for the weekend."

For someone who has no computer, Doreen has a huge online profile, from which I discovered that she's a popular speaker, chairman of the Wanstead Historical Society, charity steward of the Pearly Guild and patron of the Dream Factory.

She appeared in Danny Boyle's Olympic Opening Ceremony and on Strictly Come Dancing, is active in the London Taxi Drivers' Children's Charity, visits schools, arranges singalongs at residential homes, visits hospitals and is generally game for a laugh. She tells me that the Pearly Kings and Queens will do anything they can for charity.

Organisations give the fees to the fund and the Pearlies take nothing at all. Her most recent favourite was participation in Celebrity Chef, where, she says, the food was delicious.

I asked her why she originally decided to work so hard on other peoples' behalf. "It's nice every year, when we get together to suggest a charity that might get a few hundred pounds. And what else was I supposed to do with the time? I could have knit, I suppose…" I wonder how many charities would have lost out if she had.

Before the bell As visitors to Wanstead Park await the imminent arrival of the bluebells in Chalet Wood, Lisa Gazeley reports on the recent improvements that will enhance the overall experience of this historic park

hen you next visit Wanstead Park, you'll notice various improvements have been going on there, including sprucing up the Temple visitor centre and the removal of the woody vegetation and brambles at the Ornamental Water. This clearance work has opened up views to the Grotto, which was once a boathouse.

The Grotto was constructed in about 1760 and was famed for its interior reflective decoration of quartz, amethyst and other materials and fragments. Opened to the public in 1882, it attracted the curious until it was destroyed by fire in 1884. Today, fragments from the pre-fire Grotto are on display at The Temple.

Following completion of these most recent improvement works, City of London conservation teams have now turned their attentions to Chalet Wood – an ancient woodland considered to be one of the best springtime places to see native UK bluebells in the London and Essex areas. Chalet Wood is situated near the Temple and, every spring, it transforms into a magical shimmering haze of wild bluebells. These vibrant and sweetly-scented blue-purple flowers are extremely slow growing, taking at least four years to grow from a seed to a bulb. The plants can also stop flowering if picked or trampled upon, as this reduces their ability to obtain the foodstuffs needed to sustain the underground bulb through the long autumn and winter periods.

In folklore, Bluebells are known as 'fairy flowers' and bluebell woods are still regarded as being places of 'fairy enchantment', where forest and woodland spirits come to life.

Romantic poets of the 19th century, including Keats and Tennyson, believed that the bluebell symbolised solitude and regret. In the early 1900s, author Edward Step described bluebells as "a cloud or mist of blue resting on the earth", while Alfred, Lord Tennyson referred to bluebells as being "like the blue sky, breaking up through the earth".

To encourage visitors to keep to the paths and avoid treading on the bluebells when visiting, the conservation teams have laid 12-foot long logs along the edges of the paths to help define them.

Volunteers have also cleared brambles from the woods to provide more space for the bluebells to grow.

So come along and enjoy the improvements at Wanstead Park, which has something for everyone, with its fascinating history, fine trees, beautiful ponds, open grassland and diverse wildlife – and of course, the mystical bluebell woods in spring, which are a sight to behold.

Various bluebell-themed events will take place in Wanstead Park next month, including an exhibition at the Temple starting on 5 April; painting and photography workshops on 13 April; and guided walks by the Friends of Wanstead Parklands and the Friends of Epping Forest on 20 and 24 April respectively. Marley v Rawlings Devorah Ormonde, a partner in the probate department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, outlines the recent case of Marley v Rawlings, which highlights the importance of a properly prepared Will

I

n a recent judgment, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a couple's intended heir should not be disinherited despite the fact that the couple erroneously signed each other's Wills.

Alfred Rawlings and his wife Maureen had made mirror Wills at a firm of solicitors (not Wiseman Lee!) in 1999. Each spouse left their entire estate to the other, and after both of them had died, to their informally adopted son, Terry Marley. The Wills did not leave anything to their natural sons, Terry and Michael Rawlings.

Mrs Rawlings died in 2003, but it was only in 2006, when Mr Rawlings died, that the error in the signature of the Wills became evident. Mr and Mrs Rawlings' sons challenged the validity of the Will that Mr Rawlings signed. If it was valid, Mr Marley would inherit the estate worth £70,000, whereas if it was invalid, Mr Rawlings would have died intestate, and the two sons would inherit the £70,000.

In 2012, the Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the High Court that Mr Rawlings had not intended to give effect to the Will that he signed and it therefore did not satisfy the requirements of a valid Will. Despite Mr and Mrs Rawlings having clearly intended Mr Marley to inherit the money, the Court of Appeal ruled that the court did not have the power to rectify the Will.

But, in a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court ruled that a document does not have to be a valid Will within the legal definition or have the testator's knowledge and approval for it to be capable of being treated as a Will and of being rectified.

The law on rectification, set out in s.20 of the Administration of Justice Act 1982, allows rectification of a Will where it fails to carry out the testator's intentions because of a "clerical error".

The Supreme Court decided that the fact that the two spouses had signed each other's Will by mistake was capable of constituting a "clerical error". Mr Rawlings' Will could therefore be

rectified to contain the true wording of the Will he should have signed, meaning that Mr Marley inherits as they intended.

Significantly, it was also ruled that if any part of a Will is ambiguous and the court is required to interpret its true meaning, the court can adopt the same approach as that used when interpreting a commercial contract, which is to give effect to the intention of the parties (or party) involved. This comparison between Wills and commercial contracts had not previously been drawn.

Whilst it is practically impossible to entirely eliminate the possibility of human error in the preparation of Wills, mistakes are most common when using DIY Will-making kits, and home-made Wills are less likely to be capable of rectification than professionally-prepared Wills, not least because there may be no other evidence of the testator's intentions. Having your Will drafted by a qualified solicitor gives you the protection of their professional indemnity insurance, and the record of your instructions is kept long after the completion of the Will.

Wanstead Park 1750–1784 The ovvners of

In the 15th of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Richard Arnopp of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands tells of a scandalous love affair and the tragic end of the Child family's last male descendent

T

he personalities of John, 2nd Earl Tylney of Castlemaine, and his younger brother Josiah were not obviously similar. John was decidedly effeminate in manner, with artistic tastes and sedentary habits. Josiah, on the other hand, was something of a man of action. He spent some years as an officer in the King's Regiment of Dragoons, in which he rose to be captain. He had two horses killed under him at Dettingen.

Despite their differences, the two brothers appear to have had an affectionate relationship.

Elizabeth Montagu, in one of her letters, tells of an absurd (and rather cruel) escapade they embarked upon in 1738, when both were in their 20s, no doubt at Josiah's instigation. She says that they "took their horses, and went, out of a frolic, and robbed a taylor who had just received a large sum of Lord Tylney, and the taylor returning directly to my Lord T., to tell his sad story to the servants, saw my Lord Castlemain ride into the yard; and said, not knowing his Lordship, that he was the man who robbed him. The servants, who were not privy to the frolic, laughed much at the taylor, who persisted in the story; and Mr. Child, while they were in this dispute, likewise came in, and the taylor said that was the other highwayman, and grew very clamorous. Lord Tylney enquired what noise he heard, which set the young gentlemen laughing so much that he insisted upon their acquainting him with the story; and they thinking they had carried it on far enough, told him the story, sending, as they intended, the money to the taylor, after having sufficiently frightened him. But the taylor, who recovered his spirits with his money, insisted upon 50l. as a recompense for silence upon a subject that did not do much honour to the

adventurers. I must say, I was much surprised to hear Lord Castlemain was concerned in so manly an exploit; he smells so sweet, and talks so like a waiting gentlewoman, I should never have suspected him to be able to put even a taylor in fear of his life".

John succeeded to their father's titles in 1750.

Among his neighbours were the Wymondesold family at Wanstead Grove. In 1748, Charles Wymondesold had married Hon Henrietta Knight, daughter of Lord Luxborough, of Chigwell (later Earl of Catherlough). Josiah Child became friendly with the couple, but, in 1751, this friendship developed into an affair with Henrietta. Charles Wymondesold became aware of the situation and separated from his wife, granting her £400 a year, but stipulating that she must stop seeing Child. However, they continued to meet in London and Paris. Lord Tylney, already spending much of his time in Italy, was appalled, saying he "dreaded his [brother's] ruin by that woman and have often given him warning of it". As Tylney feared, Charles Wymondesold sued Josiah Child for "criminal conversation" with his wife, and was awarded £2,500 damages. In February 1754, he brought a divorce bill into Parliament, shortly after Henrietta had given birth to Child's son in Paris.

The evidence supporting the bill was embarrassingly intimate. For example: "Allan Boreman, a Servant … acquainted the House, 'that, on the 7th of January 1753, Mr. Child and Mrs. Wymondesold came to Mr. Brady's about Six in the Evening; and about Seven, he went up, and looked through the Hole, and saw a Scarlet Gown and Petticoat and Hoop lying by the Bedside, and heard Mrs. Wymondesold in Bed speak to Mr. Child, but it was in French, as

he apprehended, for he did not understand it; that Mr. Child came out of the Dining Room with a Night-cap on, and undressed himself, and laid his Clothes on a Chair, and then went to the Bed, and put the Curtain aside; and then he (the Witness) saw Mrs. Wymondesold, in Bed, put her Hand, and move the Bed-cloaths that Mr. Child might come into Bed, which he did …'."

By April 1754, the divorce was finalised, and Henrietta married Josiah Child. They settled in France, but the time they were destined to spend together was short, as Josiah died about 1760, apparently of tuberculosis. In 1762, Henrietta married again, to the Comte de Florac, but she died in childbirth the following year.

The couple's orphaned nine-year-old son, also named Josiah, was sent back to England.

He lived for a time with his grandfather Lord Luxborough, who is said to have treated him kindly. However, the boy's position was an uncertain one, as he was born illegitimate and, as the law then stood, did not inherit his father's position as heir-presumptive to the Tylney titles and estates. Eventually, he was sent to Italy to stay with his uncle, Lord Tylney, who became very attached to him.

However, "Joe's" story too had a sad end. In July 1774, Sir Horace Mann wrote: "Lord Tylney went … to avoid a scene which he foresaw was inevitable, and which his affection for Mr Child his nephew, would have made him unable to bear. He died a fortnight after his departure of a deep consumption. My Lord's other nephews, the Longs, will not be sorry for this event, though he never intended to deprive them of his landed estates and Wanstead, but a few thousands are capable of creating an enmity between relations, however rich they are.

Lord Tylney is expected here next week, and probably his first occupation will be to destroy the rich codicils in favour of Joe, which are in my keeping".

The death of Josiah foretold the end of the Child family in the male line, though his uncle was to live another decade. Before we finally leave the Childs, we will look next month at Lord Tylney's legacy at Wanstead.

Paint and pixels Traditional and digital artist JJ Adams will be unveiling a number of new works in his spring collection at High Street art gallery Images in Frames this month. Gallery manager Michele Redgrave reports

T

he son of a baptist preacher, JJ emigrated as a child from Plymouth to Cape Town, South Africa in the early 1980s. He spent much of his youth around the studio of South African contemporary landscape artist Derric van Rensburg, where he discovered his love of bright colour and graphic art. JJ studied graphic design at Cape College while working as a part-time apprentice in Wildfire Tattoos, a busy tattoo studio in central Cape Town. He also worked as backstage crew for international bands visiting South Africa after the end of the apartheid era. JJ finally returned to the UK in the mid-1990s, with the aim of becoming a tattoo artist. ​ fter a number of frustrated years living in A London and working in places like Camden Market and struggling to make ends meet, JJ moved back to Plymouth to further study commercial printing at the Plymouth College of Art and Design. For several years he then worked as a graphic designer before moving into sign making and advertising. In 2009, after selling a few of his acrylic paintings through a local gallery, he decided it was time to move back to London and finally pursue his art career.

JJ uses a range of mixed media in his work, from spray paint to hand painting acrylics, screen printing, collage and digital matte painting as well as photography. "I love drawing and painting on canvas, but I also love working digitally. The difference between traditional and digital art is that you don't have to wait for pixels to dry and layers can be independently adjusted," explains JJ. "I try and fuse different mediums where I can, I mix my own colour palette and take samples for my digital work or photograph my own textures and items to use in them – the more I can use that is real, the more I feel that the piece starts to come alive."

He admits being influenced at art school by artists like Norman Rockwell, Roy Lichtenstein,

Andy Warhol and Sir Peter Blake and more obscure artists such as Guy Peelleart, Hipgnosis and Storm Thorgerson and lowbrow artists like Coop, Jim Phillips and Graham Coton, who was a World War II comic book artist.

"What I see and experience goes in and gets filed away and, at some point, is triggered and mixes in with my imagination, although every time I create something new I always feel it could be better, or that it doesn't even come close to what I was really thinking. I don't really consider myself an artist, I am not always trying to make a statement with my work, but to just get out what I have going around in my head, mainly for my own amusement," concludes JJ, who now works from his studio overlooking the Thames Barrier in south-east London.

Photo detective At this month's East of London Family History Society meeting, historian Tom Doig will be explaining how to extract information from old photographs. Here he offers some clues to the methods involved

A

s a child, my great grandmother's boxes of old photographs – particularly her carte de visites and cabinet prints – were a source of fascination. Of course, she knew who the people were and so never wrote their names on the reverse. Only on very rare occasions did the Victorians take impromptu photographs – nearly all had a specific reason, such as coming of age, emigration or wedding anniversaries.

In my talk at the East of London Family History Society this month, I will look at ways of identifying the sitters of such photographs and methods for determining an indication of their date. We will not consider the technical processes used in producing the images, but rather use the clues offered by the mounts, the dimensions and the materials to uncover the essential facts.

Similarly, costume will not be examined as a dating factor – after all, do we, today, always wear the latest fashions? And remember, for years, great grandma always wore the same black bombazine after the death of great grandpa.

One aspect of clothing will, however, be taken into consideration – occupational costume.

Printer or pauper, butcher or baker, milkmaid or miller – all had their own traditional style of working clothes. We will look at one or two examples and carry out a brief study of one portrait of a young man to identity his occupation, age and the reason for the sitting.

With this information the researcher could place him exactly in an outline family tree. However, there will be a single example of a costume that gives a specific date and an insight into the lifestyle of the family – the 19th century hippy.

A short session on photographs of children will reflect the difficulties in keeping young people still during long exposures and how children were used to promote charitable projects.

Many of the latter rest, unidentified, in family collections. Sadly, some photographs of children show them in circumstances where they will never again open their eyes.

Finally, a brief visit to the 20th century will consider dating postcards, seaside tintypes and, if time allows, those Great War family portraits carried by the military to remind them of the loved ones they left at home.

In summing up, we will encounter both portraits that seem beyond detection as well as sitters that are so familiar as to confuse many historians.

Participants will be asked their opinions in the hope that these rogue views can be classified.

Members and visitors are also encouraged to bring photographs from their own collections to be used as examples and for identification.

Cooking with compassion Local resident Kate Holderness tells the story behind her recipe video for Mexican chilli con sausage, for which she won first prize in the Freedom Food Compassionate Cook competition last month

G

rowing up working in my family's pet shop, animal welfare has always been something I care about deeply. So when the RSPCA's farm animal welfare scheme, Freedom Food, launched their first ever Compassionate Cook competition this year, I knew I had to get involved.

Freedom Food is the RSPCA's scheme dedicated to improving and monitoring farm animal welfare, and whenever you see the Freedom Food logo, you know the animals have been kept in RSPCA-approved conditions.

The cooking competition was also supported by the Fairtrade Foundation and entrants had to submit a video of no more than five minutes, demonstrating how to cook a simple recipe using ingredients with the Freedom Food and Fairtrade logos. So all round, a very ethical meal.

I immediately thought of my old faithful chilli con sausage recipe. When I make it, I always use Freedom Food-labelled pork sausages and, my secret ingredient, a square of Fairtrade dark chocolate.

I wanted to make my video fun to watch, whilst still delivering the important message about farm animal welfare. So, being an actress, I decided to perform my video as a wannabe TV chef character. I really only entered because I wanted to help support a great cause and I never expected to win as there were some amazing videos and recipes entered in the competition.

When Freedom Food announced that I'd won first place, I couldn't believe it. I had to check I'd read it correctly three times. The prize is a whole year's worth of grocery shopping from The Co-operative Food, which will make a huge difference to mine and my family's lives this year.

I have recently moved to Wanstead, so now I have a Co-op on the High Street – its already my local supermarket and it stocks a lot of Fairtrade

and Freedom Food products. If you see me in there, let me know if you need directions to the Freedom Food sausages – I'll gladly point them out.

My church…

Following the recent theft of lead from the church roof, church elder Chris Walker explains what the Wanstead United Reformed Church means to him and what is being done to meet the repair costs

I

became a member of the Wanstead United Reformed Church (URC), along with my wife, 31 years ago. Having grown up in a very traditional Anglican church in north-west England, my only experience had been of very formal services with the same format every week, tied to the Book of Common Prayer.

My first experience of worshipping at the URC was somewhat different. We were overwhelmed by the warmth and friendship that greeted us and this, combined with a style of worship that seemed far less formal than we had been accustomed to, had an immediate and lasting effect on both of us.

Although the services are built around hymns, prayers, readings and a sermon, we have a different preacher most weeks. The opportunity to write some of the prayers and deliver the readings is also given to anyone in the fellowship who feels able to. This means that there is a feeling of spontaneity that encourages us all to refresh our faith every Sunday.

The building itself has rather an interesting history. It was originally built as an Anglican church on Euston Road – where St Pancras Station now stands – and was consecrated for worship in May 1861. Two years later, the Midland Railway wished to extend its line into London and needed a site for the terminus.

Unfortunately, the church stood on the only site available and so an Act of Parliament was passed to enable the railway company to buy the land.

The church could not be relocated elsewhere and so the Congregationalists of Wanstead bought it and a local builder undertook the demolition, transport by horse and cart and re-erection of the building. The foundation stone was laid in August 1866 and the new church, together with an adjoining schoolroom, now called the Cromwell Hall, was opened on 30 May 1867. A further two halls and kitchen were added later.

The building has survived two world wars, including severe damage by three bombs on

7 September 1940, and had a recent complete external and internal renovation funded by the sale of the two halls and kitchen.

I feel very sad that, after so much history and hard work, we have fallen victim to people who have no respect for the efforts and good will of the fellowship of our church. According to our contractors, the value of the lead stolen from the roof was about £50, whereas the cost of the external and internal repairs will be in the region of £4,000, not to mention the need to mop up water whenever it rains.

It is for this reason that we are presenting a concert by The Hayward Piano Quartet in aid of our church funds. The group – which includes Roberta Rominger, the general secretary of the URC – will perform pieces by Mozart, SaintSaens and Walton. I hope that as many people as possible will join us for what will be a most enjoyable evening.
