Welcome... Everyone has got a story to tell. The memories we have from childhood, the events we experienced while growing up, the jobs we have done and the people we have met along the way; all are plot lines in the dramas of our lives. Many of us do not think of our own story as being particularly interesting, it's a book we've already read or a film we've already seen, there are a few highlights, but most of it can just be left for the DVD extras. It's not until we start to look for the stories around us, therefore, that we unearth the hidden gems – the blockbuster biographies yet to be told – and there are plenty of those to be found in Wanstead (see pages 14-15). Wanstead's hidden gems exist not only in the tales of those we live and work with, but also in the natural environment that surrounds us and in the events going on around us. From a guided walk through Wanstead Park's tranquillity trail (see page 20) – part of a series of walks exploring Epping Forest through the seasons – to live broadcasts from the Royal Opera House at the Odeon in South Woodford (see page 32), there are pleasant surprises to be found and enjoyed right on our doorsteps. Last month we took time to appreciate the selfless work of those local residents who we have to thank for the beauty of the Corner House garden. This month, we take a step inside this High Street landmark – officially known as the Allan Burgess Centre and home to a throng of over-50s activity – to discover some of the gems being produced there (see pages 52-53). A community is an entity that is greater than the sum of its parts, a double act of those who create and those who enjoy. Just as with any double act, if you separate them the results can be somewhat disappointing – I'm sorry, but one Ronnie was just less than magnificent (puns intended). We all need both sides of the community coin; we all need a community that both gives and takes; we all need two Ronnies. Lee Marquis, Editor

Calling local residents...

The Wanstead Village Directory is proud to support local businesses and we encourage you to do the same. Volunteers sought to help reduce car use and pollution A view of the busy A12 leading into Wanstead and, inset, the air quality sensor at Gardner Close

Sustainable transport charity Sustrans has launched a new project aimed at reducing air pollution in Redbridge, with Wanstead having been identified as one of three hotspots in the borough with poor air quality. Cars are the main cause of the problem, with an air quality sensor on the A12 near Gardner Close, Wanstead having failed the government's air quality standards for 2012. As part of the campaign – which is funded by the Greater London Authority – Sustrans are looking

for enthusiastic local volunteers who they can train to act as Cleaner Air Champions in the community.

Spring clean for NCT

Wanted: unloved bras

Redbridge NCT is inviting residents to clear their cupboards of baby clothes and equipment they no longer need and to support the parenting charity by selling those items at this month's nearly new sale. At the sale in October last year around £1,700 was raised, with the sellers themselves – who keep 70% of the profits made from their goods – receiving cheques ranging from £8.65 to £278.

As part of International Women's Week, which runs until Sunday 10 March, Redbridge Council are asking ladies to donate their unwanted but wearable bras to help raise money for breast cancer research. Any ill-fitting or unloved undergarments can be left at bra banks located across the borough – including one at Wanstead Leisure Centre – and Against Breast Cancer will receive a donation based on the weight of all bras collected. The underwear will then be sent to Africa where there is a short supply of affordable bras.

The sale will take place at Christ Church hall on Saturday 23 March from 11am to 12.30pm. Call 07879 460072

Wanstead Cricket Club: highlights from Jamaica tour

7

Consultation continues on the future of local policing

The Wanstead team in Jamaica with former West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor

Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club completed an 11day tour of Jamaica last month, participating in a limited overs tournament and matches against Lucas Cricket Club, the Treasure Beach Pirates and a Courtney Walsh Foundation XI, which included Walsh and

three other ex-Jamaican cricketers. A highlight of the tour was a match against the inmates of Kingston's Tower Street Prison, in support of the Courtney Walsh Foundation's Young Offenders Project. "The club wisely let the inmates win!" said Martin Pluck, chairman of the Wanstead club.

Stephen Greenhalgh, London's Deputy Mayor for Policing, attended a public meeting last month on the future of policing in Redbridge. During the debate the Deputy Mayor emphasized that despite the planned closure of Wanstead and Woodford police stations, police

Walking through the history of Wanstead Park

numbers in Redbridge would be increased by 86 officers. Redbridge Borough Commander Sue Williams acknowledged, however, that a police base was needed in the west of the borough and said she was working to get suitable premises. Consultation continues until 9 March.

Aldersbrook Riding School seeks sponsors for its ponies

Researching the agricultural labourers in your family tree

Danny, a sweet-natured grey pony who seems to love children and the attention he gets

This year, Aldersbrook Riding School are celebrating their 40th anniversary, but the celebrations are tainted with fears for their future due to financial difficulties. In an effort to raise funds, the British Horse Society approved school – which also provides facilities for

the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Riding for the Disabled Association – is seeking sponsors for its animals to help with the rising costs of hay and short feed. The Nightingale pub in Wanstead has been the first to help out, by sponsoring Danny, one of the school's ponies. Call 020 8530 4648

At this month's meeting of the East of London Family History Society, Ian Waller, a professional genealogist, will be discussing the common occurrence of discovering an agricultural labourer in one's ancestry. "I will take you on an armchair journey

building a picture of their lives, outline for you the various sources that will provide information and show you where to find the records and how to interpret them," said Ian. The presentation will take place on 27 March from 7pm at Wanstead Library. Call 020 8508 2403

PGA professional David Hawkins led a day of tuition for 29 budding golfers aged five years and up at Wanstead Golf Club last month, in an effort to encourage more young people to take up the sport. The club will continue coaching sessions at weekends, with another day of swinging, chipping and putting lessons planned for the Easter holidays. "I noticed a lot of ladies dropping off or collecting their children – why not come and have a go too?" said David. For more information, call 020 8989 3938

A popular evening of poetry reading will return to Aldersbrook Library this month. Poetry on the 'Brook' first started as part of the Redbridge Book and Media Festival in 2011 and, after it was repeated independently in 2012, it was decided that the event should be held on a more regular basis. "The aim is to encourage people to read their favourite poems and their original poetry," said organiser Tracey Adebowale-Jones. Readings will take place on Tuesday 12 March from 8pm (entry: £3). Green Party leader and local MP to discuss fracking

9

Vote for your favourite books in The Big Red Read 2013

Fracking has been associated with flammable gases being dispensed through household taps

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett and John Cryer MP will both attend a discussion on fracking at Wanstead Library this month. The debate – which is being organised by Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth – will be preceded by the screening of Gasland, a documentary exposing

the risks of hydraulic fracturing (fracking), a controversial method of natural gas extraction that has been associated with the contamination of groundwater. The event, which is free to attend, begins at 6.30pm on 8 March. Booking is advised. Visit wavidi.com/gasland

Redbridge Libraries are inviting anyone who enjoys a good read to take part in The Big Red Read 2013 – the borough's annual book awards – where readers are asked to help pick Redbridge's favourite fiction and non-fiction book. This year's shortlisted titles, which are all available

at local libraries, include A Private Business by Barbara Nadel and Amy, My Daughter by Mitch Winehouse. A readers' event will take place from 6.30pm on Tuesday 19 March at Wanstead Library, where those taking part can discuss the books. Visit the library for more details and voting slips.

Wanstead stories Brad Stevens For the past three years Mike Edwards has been compiling images and stories of people in Wanstead for a book highlighting local businesses and tradespeople that have stood the test of time. The stories, all in the words of the subjects, offer a fascinating look at life over the last 50 years. In the first of a series of extracts, Brad Stevens, owner of Stevens and Stevens Garage, tells his story To advertise, please call 020 8819 6645 or visit www.wansteadvillagedirectory.com

March 2013

I

've been a local lad all my life, from birth at Wanstead Hospital in 1956, through school at the Nightingale, junior and senior, and through to business life in the garage behind The Cuckfield pub. I've always enjoyed talking with people – in fact I remember lunchtimes at junior school, continually being made to sit on my own and being caned for the heinous crime of talking, which was banned by a particularly authoritarian headteacher. Many years ago, my dad started Stevens Motors (initially in the building which was to become Aldersbrook Library) with his brother. Then, in 1966, my brothers took over the family business and started to work on VW's. They bought our present premises from in-laws who had a car hire service there (hence the petrol pump). Before that it was a slaughterhouse, and some of those features remain to this day. I had been working at Abbey Balustrades in Leytonstone, but by 1976 I was disheartened with making brackets and joined the business myself. We were buying broken Beetles, fixing them up and selling them on. Then customers returned for parts and servicing, so we adapted and branched out to cover all VW models, and to this day we do crash repairs as well as the mechanical side. We used to use sawdust from Aldersbrook Joinery to soak up the oil on the floor, and sometimes we would lose one brother for a while, then trace him to Andrews Builders, drinking tea by the warm stove with Mr. Jobber. Our brother Brian would be the first to admit that his mechanical skills were better than his customer skills, and as he once told a customer to 'go elsewhere and don't return', because the

customer had asked for a less than cost price on a completed job, we moved him out of the office. Thank heavens he wasn't dealing with the customer who reported a rattle from under the car when he was cornering. After extensive road testing, we found a beer can under the seat! We didn't have the heart to charge him. By the mid 90s, both Brian and John were ready to retire, so I took over. The business is based on long-standing and loyal customers, and it's only in the present financial climate that I have needed to advertise, but I'm sure we will survive while we offer good value. As for the future, I love this area and see people move away only to return. I know I'll be working at the garage behind the Cuckfield for many years to come, and I'm sure I'll stay in the area long after that.

Mike has room for a couple more stories in his book and would appreciate information about any people of Wanstead who have been following their profession for 30 years or more. Email mikeedmass@hotmail.com or call 020 8925 8691

A tranquil trail Fr Richard Wyber, Associate Priest, Parish of Wanstead, introduces a two-hour tranquillity trail through Wanstead Park this month – an opportunity to explore the area for your spiritual well-being

M

Perhaps it was that memory that brought me back 20 years later, newly married, to set up home in Woodford, where the Forest has been an everpresent part of our lives. Then, seven years ago, about to be ordained as a priest in the Church of England, I joined the Parish of Wanstead, the frontline of the Forest beyond the Green Man, coming out from London. As I go about the parish I have enjoyed exploring its green places, including its share of the Forest lands. I am a keen walker, not in the sense of looking for long or arduous hikes, but because I think it is, wherever possible, simply the best way to get around, and also the best way to make the most of our surroundings. I am also interested in human wellbeing, my own and that of others. That's a big subject. There are various aspects of wellbeing, for example, the social, the physical and the emotional, although it would be a mistake to compartmentalise, as each aspect feeds the others. As a priest I have a particular interest in spiritual wellbeing, a subject that is by no means the exclusive preserve of the church or overtly religious people. Walking and open space together have a big role to play here, with opportunities for stillness and silence, and for contemplation of the wonders of creation, as much available in the Forest and Wanstead Park as they are at better known 'beauty spots'. Our walk on 17 March will last for a couple of hours and will therefore be leisurely. During that time we shall endeavour to explore the variety of the Park,

© Rebecca Plunkett

y first encounter with Epping Forest was as a visitor, passing through on the way from my family home in Kent to summer holidays in Norfolk. What struck me then was the sudden change, at the Green Man Roundabout, from the crowded development of east London to the space and greenness of the Forest lands. In no other direction did London end as abruptly as this.

looking for and at places of interest and places of beauty. Of course, there will be a seasonal aspect to the walk. Who knows how far spring will have got to by that time, but we shall look for signs of new life amongst the remains of the old, which might cause some of us to think such thoughts about our own lives. As we walk, some may choose to chat, others preferring not to. The walk will be punctuated by short pauses, at which a line or two of poetry or other appropriate writing will be read. Then we shall keep silent for a few minutes, reflecting on what has been read, and looking about, giving our attention to what we see around us. As a place of recreation the Park is, of course, for people, and not just for those set on silent contemplation, so we may enjoy reflecting on the life of the Park in all its variety, and even on the planes passing overhead. There is a tea hut on the path leading through the Park from Aldersbrook to Wanstead, so that's where we shall end the trail. The tranquillity trail guided walk is free to attend and will take place on Sunday 17 March from 2pm to 4pm. Those wishing to take part should meet at the entrance to Wanstead Park on Warren Road – call 01992 760492

Wasting assets Geoffrey Williams is an expert on leasehold enfranchisement and a consultant at solicitors Wiseman Lee. Here he explains the problems associated with leases and looks at ways of preserving their value

D

o you own a flat? If you do, it is a major investment whether you live in the flat or rent it out. Changes in the market may send prices up or down, particularly in the present economic climate, and that is true of any investment. But leases are different – leases are wasting assets. A lease gives you the flat for a fixed period of time – often 99 years, but leases can be of any duration. As time passes and the term of the lease gets shorter, its value will decline. If there is plenty of time left to run on the lease the fall in value is barely noticeable. But once the term approaches 80 years the loss in value will affect you when you come to sell the flat. Is there anything you can do about this? Providing you have owned the flat for at least two years you have a statutory right to extend your lease. You will have to pay the landlord for this and the amount you pay depends on the value of the flat, the remaining term and some other factors. You will usually have to employ a surveyor to advise you on the appropriate payment and possibly to negotiate with the landlords. You will also need to use a solicitor to serve the notices and deal with the conveyancing. The rules also require you to pay the landlord's legal and surveyor's costs. It is sometimes possible to agree terms for a lease extension with your landlord without using the statutory procedure. If you do this, you can agree any terms you like. If you use the statutory procedure you are entitled to an additional 90 years on top of the lease term that you already have, and usually your lease will then be long enough to ensure that the problem will not recur for a very long time. When is it a good idea to extend your lease? If there are 85 years or more to run on your lease the need to extend it will not be pressing in most cases. But in all cases, it is a very good idea to extend your lease before the term drops below 80 years. This is because the legislation increases

the sum payable to a landlord if the term has dropped below this duration. If you want to get an idea of the amount you will have to pay, visit the website of the Leasehold Advisory Service (a quasiautonomous non-governmental organisation) at www.lease-advice.org, where there is an online premium calculator. There are some other ways in which you can preserve the value of your lease. Sometimes, if a landlord wants to sell the freehold of the building he must first offer it to the leasehold owners. Also, a majority of the leaseholders can get together and compel the landlord to sell the freehold to them. That, however, is another story – another complex area of law – and will be dealt with in a future article in this series. For more information and advice on your own case, contact Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000, or visit www.wiseman.co.uk This article should not be taken as a full statement of the law. his must be one of the area's best kept secrets, although why anyone would want to keep this secret is beyond me. Our local Odeon cinema now shows all sorts of interesting stuff, live from venues ranging from the National Theatre in London to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Live does mean live, so you are sharing the experience with people sitting in cinemas all over the world, with the added bonus that if somebody faints on stage, you're going to see it. On second thoughts, maybe that's not a bonus. A definite bonus, however, is that you have a chance to see shows that are booked up until the end of their run, like People, Alan Bennet's new play at the National Theatre. The other plus point is that you experience so much more than just the performance. I don't know a lot about opera and I've always been put off by the price. However, a recent local live broadcast gave me the chance to try it out, and so it was that I went to see Maria Stuarda, which turns out to be by Donazetti, a vaguely familiar name. Maria Stuarda is Italian for Mary Stewart, Mary Queen of Scots and the opera was based on the tussle between her and Queen Elizabeth I. I was given a sheet of information explaining the plot and what happens in each scene upon my arrival. The opera was in Italian but with subtitles, so that was OK. It started with an interview with the director, followed by a look at the orchestra tuning up. There was even a brief but enlightening conversation with the costume designer. Then the opera began. Wonderful music, soaring voices and fabulous stage sets – I was hooked! During the interval there were more interviews, all very interesting, giving a real feel for how the production had been put together. It was a wonderful experience for me and one that I shared with 11 other people. That's right, there were just 12 of us in the cinema to see such a spectacular performance – so grab your seats now and don't miss out on the upcoming opportunities to see a range of world-class productions, all on show just a short bus ride away.

Wanstead Park The ovvners of

1499–1549 (Part 2)

Richard, Lord Rich (1496/7-1567)

Sir Thomas More (1478-1535)

L

In 1532, probably in his late 20s, Heron was listed as an "esquire of the body" (a personal attendant of the King), which testifies to the favour he then enjoyed at Court.

As was common with less-visited Royal properties, the manor and park of Wanstead was placed under the control of a succession of keepers. One of these was Sir Giles Heron (c.1504-1540), who owned a neighbouring property in Aldersbrook. The son of Sir John Heron of Hackney, Treasurer of the Household to both Henry VII and Henry VIII, Sir Giles Heron was elected MP for Thetford in 1529, and was presumably also returned in 1536.

"The office of esquire of the body was of a very honourable nature. It is thus described in the household book of Edward the Fourth, Esquiers for the body, four, noble of condition, whereof always two be attendaunt upon the king's person to array and unarray hym, to watche day and nyght to dress hym in his clothes, and they be callers to the chaumberlayn if any thing lak for his person, or plesaunce; theyre busines is in many secrets, some sitting in the king's chaumber, some in the hall with persones of like service, which is called knyghts service, taking every of them for his lyvery, at night, a chete loffe, one quart wyne, &c. Their fee was 7½d. a day while in waiting."

ast month we saw how Wanstead was used by the first three Tudor monarchs. Primarily a base for hunting in Waltham Forest (now Epping Forest), it was also employed as a resting place during Royal progresses through the eastern counties, as well as an occasional refuge from epidemics in London.

In the third of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Friends of Wanstead Parklands member Richard Arnopp tells of the linked – but contrasting – fortunes of two of Henry VIII's keepers of Wanstead Park

Also in 1532, Heron sold his property in Aldersbrook to the King around the time that he and three of his brothers were pardoned for offences against the forest laws. The antiquary John Leland described Heron as "wise in words, but foolish in deeds", and he seems to have become embroiled in an unusual number of legal disputes, including with members of his own family. This may suggest a quarrelsome character or poor judgement, failings which in lesser people rarely prove fatal. Unfortunately for Heron, he was destined to be caught up in the ramifications of "the King's Great Matter". On his father's death in 1523 Heron had become a ward of Sir Thomas More, a close friend of Henry VIII, who appointed him Lord Chancellor. Heron married Cecily, More's daughter, in 1525. More fell from favour after 1530, due to his opposition to the annulment of the King's first marriage and the establishment of the Royal Supremacy over the Church. After More's execution in 1535, members of his circle remained under suspicion. Heron's end came after he was accused by a tenant named Lyons, whom he had evicted, of "speaking too freely" of the King. Heron seems to have been less close to Sir Thomas More than the latter's other son-in-law, William Roper. However, he was close enough that this possibly malicious accusation, which in other cases might have attracted little attention, rapidly became a very serious matter. Lyons' evidence was so weak as to make it doubtful whether a conviction could be obtained through a normal trial, but the King's ministers overcame this by bringing a Bill of Attainder against Heron for treason. Placed before the House of Lords, the bill passed through both houses in six days, and Heron was put to death in 1540 without any form of legal process. Three years after Heron's death, in 1543, Henry VIII appointed what was to be his last keeper of Wanstead Park. This was none other than Sir Richard Rich, later Lord Rich (1496/7-1567), who had played the key role in Thomas More's conviction. At the time Solicitor General, Rich testified that More had, in his presence, denied that the King was the legitimate head of the Church. Other witnesses declined to corroborate this, and More denied it outright, observing to his judges:

"Can it therefore seem likely to your Lordships, that I should in so weighty an affair as this, act so unadvisedly as to trust Mr. Rich, a man I had always so mean an opinion of, in reference to his truth and honesty, that I should only impart to Mr. Rich the secrets of my conscience in respect to the King's supremacy, the particular secrets, and only point about which I have been so long pressed to explain myself? Which I never did, nor never would reveal; when the act was once made, either to the King himself, or any of his Privy Councillors, as is well known to your Honours, who have been sent upon no other account at several times by His Majesty to me in the Tower. I refer it to your judgments, my Lords, whether this can seem credible to any of your Lordships." Regardless of the evidence, the outcome was never seriously in doubt, and the court found More guilty after a mere 15 minutes of deliberation. Rich's role in these events gained him a new notoriety in recent times through the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons, where he was played by John Hurt. A lawyer and statesman, Richard Rich served Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. Though personally of conservative religious sympathies (his daughter was said to have entered the restored Brigittine house at Syon under Mary), he took an active role in the dissolution of the monasteries in his capacity as Chancellor of the Court of Augmentation, and became extremely wealthy as a result. Rich was raised to the Peerage in 1548. In 1549, Edward VI granted Rich the lordship of the manor of Wanstead, which thus left the hands of the Crown and returned to private ownership. Sir Richard Rich was to be a key figure in the history of Wanstead Park, which he transformed by building a magnificent new house as its focus. This became the scene of dramatic events during his tenure, as we shall see next month.

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are a community group which seeks to raise awareness of the history and ecology of Wanstead Park and campaigns for its preservation and improvement. The Friends organise a range of activities, produce DVDs and publications and sponsor research. Find out more at www.wansteadpark.org.uk

All that jazz Gill Hornsey reports on a charity jazz night held at Christ Church last month – an event that hit all the right notes by raising thousands of pounds to help repair the iconic building

T

he Friends of St Mary with Christ Church staged a jazz, blues and soul night last month and managed to secure a staggering £2,800 in the process for essential repairs to the listed building's roof. The sell-out event proved to be a huge success, kicking off with a smart drinks reception in the Christ Church function rooms. Drinks were followed by sultry tunes played by a live band under the direction of musician Andy Richardson. The melodies included some wellknown old jazz hits, including Cry Me A River and Minnie the Moocher, as well as some more popular numbers from Sinatra and the Rolling Stones. Stunning vocal performances were delivered by John Seager, Adrian Smith, Gillian Hornsey and Pete Hunt. Backing vocals from Rose Marsh and Pete Hunt were accompanied by the newly-introduced brass section, including Clive Miller, George Smith and Will Marsh. Everyone enjoyed the endless hits, with food provided by local caterer Debbie Honeyman and her team from A Taste of Honey Catering, who generously gave their time for free.

The money raised will go towards the final stages of the Raise the Roof Campaign. As exclusive sponsors of the campaign, Petty Son & Prestwich supported the event: "It is a wonderful feeling to be at the heart of a buzzing, thriving community where events like this show off the amazing array of local talent and are so well supported. The brilliant team of people that worked so hard to put on this spectacular event should all be applauded. The transformation of the Christ Church hall to Wanstead's answer to Ronnie Scott's had to be seen to be believed! We have been so proud to sponsor and take part in events like this over the years… long may it continue." The Friends of St Mary with Christ Church are now looking forward to several other events throughout the rest of the year in a bid to ensure Christ Church can be fully restored to its former glory.

Upcoming fundraising events: Wanstead Village Dog Show – 12 May 2013 Following the success of last year's show, the family-fun event will be held in the grounds of Christ Church again this year. Residents will be invited to enter their dog into one of the rounds, enjoy a glass of Pimms, a burger from the BBQ or perhaps pay a visit to the cake stall. Rock Me Baby! – 9 June 2013 An event specifically designed for the youngest group of parishioners. For two hours a DJ will treat the infants and their older siblings to a disco with current and classic club music. Friends Annual Ball – 6 July 2013 The biggest fundraiser of the year. A chance to enjoy a fabulous dinner and to take part in the charity auction, before dancing the night away. Wanstead Festival – 15 September 2013 The BBQ will be running at full steam and traditional cream teas will once again be on offer at the annual Wanstead Festival. For more information about these events, email gillianhornsey@fastmail.co.uk, or to find out more about the church restoration, email suzanne.paterson1@ntlworld.com

The two Ronnies Julia Wilson introduces Ron Bowman and Ron Filer's popular weekly art class at the Allan Burgess Centre – Age UK Redbridge's activity centre in Wanstead

I

f you come to the Allan Burgess Centre on any Thursday morning you'll find that it's a hive of peaceful and purposeful activity. Lots of us will be enjoying a morning of art, led by the two Rons. You can focus on any subject you like, with Ron and Ron helping you in a relaxed and encouraging manner. The intention and atmosphere at this group is of quiet enjoyment – with some pleasant chat too – and you can develop skills as and when you need them. We don't have beginner, intermediate or advanced tags, so this is an ideal place to come if you think you might like to have a go at something new and would like to have some help from more experienced artists. Maybe you'll find that this is the way to give yourself time to do something you have always intended to do at home, but have never quite found the time. We work in a variety of media: watercolour, acrylics, pencil, pastels and crayons. You can finish a picture in one session, leave it for next week, or take it home and continue it there. Materials are provided at first, with people preferring to bring their own after they have decided that this is an activity for them. You can come and have a trial session for £2, then, if you decide you would like to continue, you can join for a block of 10 sessions for £20. Each new block starts the week after the previous one finishes, so you don't have to worry about rebooking on a different day or having a long gap between terms. The session times are from 10am to 12 noon, but you can arrive and leave in your own time. So, if you've ever thought you might like to take an art class, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours, and it might lead to a new and enjoyable pastime.

Elephant by Joan Barmby (opposite, top left) The Robin by Tom Parkyn (opposite, top right) Pleshey Potting Shed by Ron Filer (opposite) Castle by Ron Bowman (background image) The Allan Burgess Centre, formerly known as the Corner House, is located at 2 Grove Park, Wanstead and offers a range of classes for the over 50s throughout the week. Hot meals are also available (booking required). For more information, call 020 8989 6338

Land of Smiles Thailand is one of the most beautiful, charming and diverse countries you can visit. It's also one of Asia's best-value holiday destinations, says Mark Haughton of Wanstead travel agent Escape Worldwide

T

Most visitors start their Thai adventure in Bangkok, the capital and by far the largest city, with the best flight connections from the UK. It's a hectic place with lots to experience – there's everything from ancient temples and grand palaces to vibrant markets and lively bars, and while it's a full-on city that's not to everyone's taste, it's an easy place to fall in love with. It also offers some of the bestvalue, high-quality hotels of any city in the world, so you can start your holiday to Thailand with a spot of luxury without breaking the bank. A few days in Bangkok will give a good overview of the city, but trying to do things too quickly can be draining. If you find Bangkok to be too chaotic, head north to Chiang Mai, Thailand's second city, or to the hills and mountains around the border of Burma and Laos – the fabled Golden Triangle region. Chiang Mai has some of the best markets in Thailand, it's a great location for cookery courses and is also home to some of its most beautiful temples – climb the 309 steps to Wat Suthep, the city's most important temple and one that seems to be made out of pure gold. Further north from Chiang Mai the Golden Triangle marks the area where Thailand meets Burma and Laos, with stunning scenery along the banks of the Mekong. This is a great area for getting off the beaten track, visiting local hill tribes and seeing another side of this diverse country. Thailand is renowned for its beaches, and no trip to the Land of Smiles would be complete without a relaxing stay on a stunning stretch of sand. All of Thailand's beach resorts are quite different, which adds to the diversity and charm of the country.

© Escape Worldwide

hailand's diversity makes it a fascinating place to visit, where you can take in ancient temples and modern cities, deserted beaches and non-stop nightlife, stunning countryside and plenty more – all in one trip. Holidays to Thailand are very flexible, so it's not just a two-weeks-on-the-beach kind of place, you can do as much – or as little – as you wish.

Reclining Buddha, Wat Po in Bangkok, Thailand

Head to Pattaya, Chaweng or Patong if you want plenty of nightlife, or to one of the islands, such as Koh Samet or Koh Lanta, if you're in search of total relaxation. The traditional resorts of Hua Hin and Khao Lak offer a less commercialised alternative to the larger resorts and are great locations for sampling some traditional Thai cuisine. Phuket is the largest and most visited resort, but even on this one island you have everything from late-night clubs to deserted beaches. The food in Thailand is one of the best parts of a trip there – mouth-watering seafood, fiery curries and sublime fresh fruit are some of the highlights. Keep an eye out for seasonal fruit, such as rambutan and mangosteen, the biggest prawns you're likely to come across and a use of chilli that will make your eyes water just thinking about it. Cracking eggs Whilst there will be no shortage of chocolate eggs consumed this month, local nutritionist Karen Poole explains why we shouldn't overlook the real thing as part of a balanced diet

I

t seemed as though the door had barely closed on New Year's Eve before a glittering array of Easter eggs appeared in the shops. We're happy enough to eat chocolate eggs, of course, but what about the real thing? Eggs are readily available and affordable, they can be either free range or organic, need very little preparation, carry a minimal carbon footprint and present a host of beneficial nutrients and vitamins; a real superfood. Anyone can cook an egg and there are lots of different and interesting ways to eat them, so what are the perceived bugbears? A lot of people worry about cholesterol and, of course, that's a very sensible approach. However, cholesterol in the right balance is vital for our health and actually helps to maintain the integrity of the smooth muscle that forms our blood vessels. Even better, eggs contain lecithin, which binds to bad cholesterol and carries it out of the body to effectively aid cholesterol regulation. Did you know an egg can help to keep your hair shiny and full and make that visit to the hairdresser last a little longer? And, although most of us now know that sunlight makes vitamin D, did you know you can also get some of your recommended daily intake from eggs? OK, it's not a lot, but it all helps. The vitamin A in eggs can help stave off encroaching long-sightedness as we get older. Even the choline they contain can help us with our concentration and memory. And its not just a bonus for the middle aged either; growing youngsters will also benefit from a valuable food source to aid their development. Eggs are one of nature's most versatile and nutritious foods, quick to cook and widely available. Plus they have the bonus of coming in their own hermetic packaging. A truly cracking superfood! For more information on food and nutrition, call Karen Poole on 07876 452 008 or visit www.karenpoolenutrition.co.uk

f.u.n.e.x? s.v.f.x. Ronnie Corbett once asked: "Have you any eggs?" Yes, we have eggs, but some 660,000 of them are thrown away each day. Recycle for your Community is a campaign encouraging residents within the East London Waste Authority to reduce the 430,000 tonnes of household waste they produce every year. Sarah Mills provides some tips

T

he team at Recycle for your Community are always encouraging us to reduce our waste – whether it's by recycling more, composting, crafting, or being conscientious consumers – but how often do we think about the amount of food that gets thrown away at home? Each day in the UK we throw away 1.6m bananas, 220,000 loaves of bread, 1.3m yoghurts and 660,000 eggs – all this isn't just bad for the environment, it's bad for our pockets too. The average family throws away £50 of good food every month, which adds up to £600 a year.

The good news is that with some simple planning and a bit of creativity we can all avoid wasting food at home. Small changes can help keep our food fresher for longer, which means more can be eaten at its best rather than ending up in the bin, saving us time and money. Here are Recycle for your Community's top tips for making the most of what you buy. zz 26% of all the food and drink we throw away in the UK is fresh fruit and vegetables, but many of these, such as peppers, carrots and oranges, will last for at least a week longer if kept in the fridge. zz It's best not to put bread in the fridge as it goes stale much quicker; bread keeps better in a cool dark place, such as a bread bin or cupboard. If you buy bread on offer, or it takes you a while to use a loaf up, consider freezing some on the day you buy it, or at any time up to the best before date. zz Look out for resealable packs to keep your opened food in peak condition for longer. If the product doesn't have this feature, use a bag clip or put the opened pack into an air-tight container. zz Do you often end up with too much rice or pasta? Then use the handy portion calculator on the Love Food Hate Waste website.

zz Do you love leftovers? Sometimes it's great to cook too much – just portion up the extra food, pop it in the freezer and defrost when needed for a quick and easy home-cooked frozen meal. zz Food labels are undergoing a lot of change due to new legislation to make them less confusing, so it's worth taking a closer look at them, even for products you might buy regularly. Best before dates refer only to quality and many things will still be perfectly edible after this time. Be more careful with eggs, meat and fish and follow the use by date as an indication of food safety. Not only can wasting less food at home save you money, but it has a big effect on the environment too; if we all stopped wasting food it could have the carbon reduction equivalent of taking a fifth of cars off the road every year. For more information about reducing waste at home, or for details on local waste services, visit www.recycleforyourcommunity.com. Asurestart Redbridge Sure Start Children's Centres aim to give children the best start in life. Jayne Rudge, manager of Wanstead and Aldersbrook Children's Centres, explains what they have to offer local families

W

anstead and Aldersbrook Children's Centres are a one-stop shop for children aged up to five years and their parents or carers. We provide access to family healthcare, advice and guidance about bringing up children, early education and childcare. We also have links to career and employment services to support parents who want to return to work or find training opportunities. You can get advice, guidance and practical support on many areas that may affect family life, such as benefits entitlement, finding a school, housing issues, domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse. Every family needs support at some point, whether it's breast feeding information, getting children into routines, or dealing with tantrums. We offer practical and emotional support to all families, so call us or pop in to see how we can support you and your family. We offer a range of different activities and sessions each day. Most sessions do not need to be booked, however, sessions can get busy, so arrive on time to avoid disappointment. All of our activities are planned to the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum so that your child can experience early learning through play. Activities include baby massage, healthy eating, story explorers and much more. We also offer lots of ideas for low- or no-cost activities at home. If you have a child who has an additional or special need we run two groups weekly where you can come and play in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with trained staff. The Equal Chances group runs at Aldersbrook every Monday and the Barnardos Indigo Project runs at Wanstead every Wednesday. For more information on these projects please contact the centre. Our Saturday dads group runs every two weeks at Wanstead, 10am to 12pm, so if you are a dad,

stepdad, uncle or any male carer of a child under five, come along and see what's going on. We also welcome volunteers in the centres. If you have a few hours spare you can come and help out. Volunteers can help deliver sessions and assist with administration and reception duties. Volunteering can increase your employability skills and looks great on your CV. We offer a short training course for all our volunteers before they start so they have a clear understanding of what's required of them. So, whether you want advice and guidance, to meet other parents, or to just come along and have fun with your child, all you need to do is pop in and see us and complete a registration form – you can do this the first time you come to a session. I look forward to meeting you all soon. Wanstead Children’s Centre, 33 Wanstead Place, E11 2SW. Call 020 8496 0032 Aldersbrook Children’s Centre, Ingatestone Road, E12 5HE. Call 020 8496 0100
