Welcome... It has long been debated whether arachnophobia is something that’s embedded into us as a species or whether we learn it from our culture. Research published by neuroscientist Stefanie Hoehl from the University of Vienna at the end of last year – which monitored pupillary dilation in six-month-old babies when shown images of spiders – suggests the former is to blame. It means the fear and disgust some of us feel when we encounter these critters could actually be a hangover from a survival instinct that evolved in ancient times. Whether true or not, it’s a good study to quote when explaining why someone else needs to remove any eight-legged visitors from your home. The irrational fear of spiders can be distressing for those afflicted with the phobia (note to sufferers: turn these pages with caution). But while it’s a widespread condition – affecting around 50% of women and 10% of men – it is by no means at the top of the charts when it comes to common phobias. That accolade goes to social phobia, and more specifically, glossophobia, a fear of public speaking, which impacts around 75% of the population. I don’t mind admitting my own aversion to public speaking and spiders (is it just me or does that invoke an uneasy image, addressing a room full of spiders?). And aside from a couple of weddings and the occasional eviction of an unwanted house guest, I have little to do with either: I’m grateful for the written word as my public communication tool of choice. But if, like those spider-viewing infants, arachnids cause your pupils to dilate, it may be time for some exposure therapy. You could start with images (again, turn these pages with caution) and progress to the real thing. And with over 100 types of spider discovered locally to date, Wanstead has plenty to choose from. Enough surely to open anyone’s eyes. Lee Marquis, Editor

Swing to Labour in local election

Aldersbrook garden trail

Labour increased its majority on Redbridge Council at last month’s local election, winning 51 seats to the Conservatives’ 12. A total of 207,589 residents turned out to vote (38.78%) across the borough’s 22 wards. “The impact of government cuts means we are in challenging times, but we will continue to put our residents first in everything we do and deliver the services they want, need and deserve,” said Leader of the Council Jas Athwal.

Homeowners across Aldersbrook will be opening their gardens to the public on 3 June as part of the Aldersbrook Open Gardens Trail (12 noon to 5pm; tickets: £5). “We will be opening 15 gardens, selling plants and cakes. There will also be tours of the stables of Aldersbrook Riding School,” said an event organiser. Proceeds will be donated to Cancer Research and the local Riding for the Disabled Association. ‘Practice makes perfect’: actorturned-artist takes part in exhibition

A local estate agent has raised over £1,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice by completing a London to Paris bike ride. “I found it extremely challenging. I have never cycled long distance before and my training was not as intense as it should have been! Day one was the toughest; the distance combined with the climb really destroyed the quads!” said Michael Molloy, owner of Martin & Co on Wanstead High Street. The three-day challenge began at Big Ben on 12 May, covering 190 miles en route to the Eiffel Tower.

Wanstead resident Erica Johns is one of several artists taking part in the Essex Art Club’s summer exhibition this month. “After a rich and varied life as a performer, I now have the opportunity to paint and share my pictures… I never considered myself naturally talented but have proved by my continuing sales that practice makes perfect,” said Erica. The exhibition – which will feature a range of subjects, styles and media – opens at The House Mill Gallery in east London on 5 June and runs until 10 June. Visit wavidi.co/eac18

Botanists Enid Barrie and Iain Ambler conducted a survey of St Mary’s churchyard last month to assess its biodiversity. A total of 152 plant species were found – including unusual ones such as male fern and white and reflexed stonecrops – demonstrating high diversity for a small area. The flora of the Overton Drive graveyard was first surveyed 60 years ago by Gulielma Lister, niece of Lord Lister, the founder of antiseptic surgery. Subsequently, Wren Wildlife Group member Paul Ferris surveyed the site in detail in 1981.

The Bungalow Café EST:1938

Serving Wanstead for 80 years… The Bungalow Café was established in 1938 by Mr and Mrs Godley. Mr Godley was a volunteer firefighter during the Blitz, and this café was used to feed local firefighters, police and the armed forces. We still have a very strong following with the local police to this day. In the 1960s the café was passed on to two Irish ladies who ran it as a coffee shop and diner, serving tea and scones. Then, in the late 1970s, it was taken over by George Demetriou – our predecessor – who ran it up to 2001. The venue is still running as a traditional British café. Our teas and coffees have not increased

in price from the 1970s – we still serve tea for 50p and coffee for 60p. Over the years, The Bungalow Café has become a landmark in Wanstead and we thrive on keeping our prices low and our quality high. We invite you to come and experience a venue that is a cut above the rest.

Fun with shrink plastic at the June Local Makers Market

Local residents and volunteers from Goodgym Redbridge took part in the Keep Britain Tidy Great Plastic Pick Up last month. Litter pickers targeted George Green, Cambridge Park Road, Spratt Hall Road and the area around Wanstead Station. “Items collected included the usual mixture of plastic bags, bottles and takeaway food packaging. There were also a number of licence plates, which were handed to the police,” said organiser Dan Slipper. The next community litter pick will take place on 7 July. Email danielslipper@googlemail.com

A shrink plastic workshop will take place at this month’s Local Makers Market, which showcases handmade products. “Participants will make two badges from scratch, and each will be given a shrink plastic kit to take home,” said Kymberly O’Carroll-Fitzpatrick, creator of the Fitzygogo! wearable art brand. Shrink plastic shrinks to a fraction of its original size when heated. The workshop will take place on 9 June from 1pm (£10) in the gardens of Christ Church. The market is open from 10am to 4pm in the church hall. Visit wavidi.co/shrink

a a crossroads The Parish of Wanstead is considering the future of The Church of St Mary the Virgin on Overton Drive, which is the only Grade I listed building in Redbridge. Rev Dr Jack Dunn reports

St Mary’s has an average congregation of 31 people at its weekly Sunday service (by comparison, Christ Church welcomes over 250 people on the weekend). The PCC is now considering St Mary’s future, not just in terms of keeping services going, but also in terms of the capital costs required (raised through grants and other charitable giving) to maintain and restore this beautiful Grade I listed Georgian gem of a building. Over recent years, the church has received a number of grants to restore the building but it remains on the national Heritage at Risk Register. The PCC have looked into building a separate education centre near to the site but this has not proved to be economically viable. We have approached the Epping Forest charitable trust to partner with us and possibly to take on the ownership or running of the building, but although no formal answer has yet been received, early indications are not positive. We are also working with councillors, planning officers, local and national trusts and associations, John Cryer MP, the Diocese of Chelmsford and the Church of England to identify possible options. So far, some of the options to emerge include setting up a new local trust or identifying an existing local trust to take on the ownership of the building, publicly advertising the building

A

fter a number of meetings with members of the parish over the course of 2018, and after holding more joint services in St Mary’s over the past 20 months than before to attempt to build up congregational numbers there, the parochial church council (PCC) are now looking at all the options for the future of the iconic building. The PCC hopes to have more clarity about the way ahead by the end of September 2018.

for alternative religious use – such as for other Christian denominations to worship in – or vesting the building with the Churches Conservation Trust. It is hoped these options would enable the building to continue to be used as a church and thus not to be deconsecrated. For legal reasons, weekly worship might have to fall to six times per year with Occasional Offices, such as baptisms, weddings and funerals, still being held there. The church has no plans to sell the land, which is maintained by church volunteers and the borough and which is still open for the burial of cremated remains. We would very much like to see Christian worship continue at St Mary’s and are still praying about and exploring all options to help increase worshipping numbers there. However, one of the questions we are also now asking is whether there are people in our wider community who may not wish to worship in the building but who may care deeply about its preservation and flourishing and who might therefore now be willing to step forward and help us secure its future. nterested in nature but don’t really know what you’re looking at? Want to find out more about what plants and animals can be seen on your doorstep? Well, why not come along to the Wren Wildlife Group’s fourth annual bio-blitz on the weekend of 23 and 24 June? All the events are based on Wanstead Flats or in Wanstead Park – and they’re all free! We’ll have experts on hand to show people butterflies and birds. There will be ponddipping sessions that kids can get involved in. And after the sun goes down on the Saturday night, we’ll even have a bat walk. Some of the events for this year’s bio-blitz will be ‘set-piece’ affairs, such as the bat walk and dawn chorus walk. Others will be more open-ended, with leaders keeping the activity going for an hour or two and people free to dip in and out, such as bee and spider surveying and pond-dipping. Our friendly team of experts includes Tricia Moxey, a great all-round naturalist, who will be familiar to many for her annual fungi walks in Bush Wood. Tricia is also an expert botanist, so expect to see some interesting wildflowers on the walks she leads on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Francis Castro led last year’s successful bat walk in Wanstead Park and he’s coming back to do it again. Francis has a thorough knowledge of these mysterious creatures and is an expert with a bat detector! This year’s bio-blitz team also includes Gill James (skylarks), Ute Villavincenzio (ducks), Tony Madgwick and Mirza Rashid (bees), David Carr (spiders), Tommy Root (plant galls) and Nick and Penny Evans (snails).

Setting the stage Pete Feldon is looking for local bands, choirs and solo acts to complete the line-up for this year’s Wanstead Festival. Videographers are also needed to document the performances

W

We usually have a good variety of musical genres. Last year included a choir, a jazz band, a couple of rock bands and Songbird Sessions, who had competed in BBC TV’s Pitch Battle. Every year, we have someone from Wanstead High School, and last year it was the Fab Sisters. In choosing the performers, preference is given to those who have at least one member who is a Wanstead resident. But it has to be good music, so sometimes we widen our scope to include other Redbridge residents. As well as aiming to provide a range of musical styles, we try to ensure there is a diversity of performers and also those who play covers of well-known songs and those who write their own material. Most of our performers are amateur musicians, but they all take music very seriously and play to a high standard. Some of the performers have gone on to greater things, such as the O’Neill sisters who formed Bleech with Matt Bick and recorded two well-received albums. All three were Wanstead High School students. Many performers only play once, but some have played several times, such as Murray Salmon, a jazz bassist who has played with artists such as the Humphrey Lyttleton Band. I first got involved 17 years ago when the Wanstead Business Partnership ran

© Jennifer Schenck

anstead Festival provides a great opportunity for local musicians to perform on a professional music stage and, hopefully, entertain an appreciative audience. I am a Wanstead resident who has been helping with finding performers for the music stage at the Wanstead Festival since shortly after it first began. Songbird Sessions performing at last year’s Wanstead Festival

the Wanstead Festival. I remarked at a consultation meeting that there wasn’t enough rock music, so I was asked to volunteer to sort this out. Ever since then, I have been involved in finding performers and supporting them on the day. I’ve played several times myself, although always in different bands. It has been a great experience for me, but looking to the future, it would be great if someone could take over the finding of performers and stage-management. The organisers of the festival at Vision RCL could do it and I’m sure they would do a good job, but a local volunteer would be better. We don’t have much in the way of a record of previous performances other than photographs. It would be good if we could make a video, so in addition to musicians, I would be pleased to hear from any videographers out there who are interested in getting involved. The Wanstead Festival will take place on Christchurch Green on 16 September from 11am to 6pm. For more information about performing, visit wavidi.co/wf18bands

Celebrating the music In the first of two articles celebrating the return of Music in Wanstead Park this summer, Caitlin Downie explains the background to the popular festival and why she and her brother have taken on the project

I

n 1999 I was 12 years old and my brother was 5 when the very first Music in Wanstead Park was created. Formed by the Aldersbrook Family Association (AFA), it started as a small event, where people were able to bring their own food and drink while watching wonderful music in their local park. It is easy to see why it was a success and continued to grow every year. As the event gained popularity, the size of it also grew; soon the event had a bigger stage, larger audiences and a plethora of activities for children. It is no wonder then that Calum and I wanted to get involved with this event on our doorstep – which was very much part of our childhood – when we realised it wasn’t coming back after 2016. The Music in Wanstead Park festival has a very special place in my heart and not just because of my childhood memories, but because when I was 18, I was given the chance to perform there. I was given a 20-minute slot to perform some opera and classical greats to a crowd of family and neighbours. At that point, the stage was at the entrance to the Temple (it later moved round to the side) and I remember it being a very windy day; the cover for the stage kept blowing up, sometimes even when I hit my top notes! I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity the AFA gave me. Having an opera singer there gives you an idea of the diverse but local talent the event was and is passionate about. Every year, a wealth of talent has been listened to and the vast majority have a connection with the local area. But, of course, the event isn’t just about music. With a wealth of things for families to do, it is also about an investment of time in our loved ones, neighbours and friends.

This is why Calum and I wanted to bring the event back. It is legendary in Wanstead and many people felt its absence last year; the vibrancy of the event is needed in Wanstead. So, Calum and I contacted the AFA to see if they would let us take it on. Our initial meetings with the association were comforting but scary! The strategic management the AFA had to go through to get everything sorted was impressive and a tough act to follow. The help and support the AFA have given us has been invaluable. This year, with the festival run by Calum and I, with help from Dan Clapton at The Wanstead Tap, its importance in our lives has grown. For me, as well as being one of the first places I performed my classical cabarets, it is now the place where I am seeing my brother flourish in event management. Leaving university and finding your place in the world can be a daunting task. Seeing Calum take on the role of event organiser is seeing him come alive and excited about his career prospects. With the big day fast approaching, now all we can hope for is excellent weather. Music in Wanstead Park will take place on 14 July from 2pm to 9pm (adults: £12; children: £6). Visit wavidi.co/miwp

In the second of a series of articles looking at the issues surrounding divorce, local resident and divorce consultant Sonia Limbada dispels four common myths surrounding consent orders

W

hen you get divorced, you will both need to decide how you are going to split your property, pensions, savings, debts and other assets. Once you have come to an agreement, you should make it legally binding by getting a court order, called a consent order. Getting a consent order is optional, so when a couple go through an amicable divorce, they often choose to divorce without one. This article dispels four common myths people believe when choosing not to get a consent order and why divorcing without dealing with finances could leave you exposed. 1. We don’t have anything to split Finalising your divorce (getting your decree absolute) ends your marriage, not your financial ties to each other. Unless you have a consent order in place, your ex-partner can make a financial claim against you, even years after the divorce is finalised, putting any future assets at risk. If you don’t have anything to split, this is the best time to get an agreement to confirm you don’t want anything from each other, now or in the future. 2. We don’t want anything from each other You may have kept your finances separate from each other and agree you do not want anything from each other, but there is always a small risk that one spouse may change their mind in the future. Their financial circumstances may change for the worse or their new partner may entice them to make a claim. By getting a consent order, you will close the door on these possibilities. 3. We have our own private agreement It is commendable when divorcing couples can come to their own arrangements about how they are going to split their finances.

However, no matter how well executed, an agreement is not legally binding until it is set out in a consent order. An added advantage of getting a consent order is that you will have a chance of ensuring that your agreement is fair. 4. A consent order will slow us down A consent order can be prepared and submitted while you are waiting for your compulsory six-week period to expire in between the decree nisi and decree absolute. A straightforward consent order can be obtained relatively quickly – usually within six to 10 weeks (timescales vary depending on the court and your circumstances), so realistically, you are only waiting a few extra weeks. Ultimately, there is no doubt that divorce is difficult and getting a consent order may seem like an added complication that you can do without, but a divorce is never complete without a consent order, so make sure you protect your financial future. Sonia Limbada is a divorce consultant providing guidance on amicable divorces. For more information, call 07967 012 006. Please note, this article does not constitute legal advice.

Arachnologist David Carr will be taking part in the Wren Wildlife Group’s bioblitz on 23 and 24 June. Tim Harris reports and looks at five species of spider – discovered and photographed by Rose Stephens – that can be found in the Wanstead area Female wolf spider (Alopecosa) David Carr found the wolf spider Alopecosa cuneata on Wanstead Flats in May 2017. This was a notable find because it is described as “local and uncommon in southern England” and usually favours chalk grassland and dunes – not your typical Wanstead habitat! Often, it is very hard to put a specific name to a spider, and the wolf spiders are no exception. The accompanying photograph shows one of the wolf spiders but its exact identity hasn’t been verified.

T

he first time arachnologist David Carr visited Wanstead Flats, he realised it would be a great place to search for spiders. A couple of years on, he has returned on several occasions, also making forays into Wanstead Park. During the process, he has found well over 100 different types of spider in our acid grassland and scrub. The excellent news for all local naturalists is that David will be returning again to participate in the Wren Wildlife Group’s bioblitz this month.

Male wolf spider (Alopecosa pulverulenta) This medium-sized, dark brown arachnid is a kind of wolf spider, so named for its method of hunting: it searches for prey on the ground, chasing and pouncing on it rather than waiting for it to fly or walk into a web. Males are active in May and June, females from April to September. It likes dry grassland where females dig a burrow and then guard their egg sac. Crab spider (Misumena vatia) This is one of the tricksters of the spider world. They often sit motionless on yellow or white flower heads, waiting for prey. Adult females can change colour to match the colour of the flower, so they may be greenish, yellow or white. When a fly or other small insect lands on the flower, the spider traps it between its crab-like front legs. The smaller brown males can’t perform the same trick. Widespread in southern England, this spider is most commonly seen in May and June and seems to particularly like the boundary between areas of grassland and scrub.

Zelotes latreillei Often found under stones and pieces of wood, these attractive spiders also have a preference for grassland, such as Wanstead Flats. Adults of both sexes can be found from late spring to autumn.

Eight Legs and counting...

Philodromus This may be Philodromus albidus or Philodromus rufus – they are tricky to tell apart. They love the lower branches of broad-leaved trees, such as oaks. Adults of both sexes can be seen between May and July, with a peak in June.

Spider surveys will take place as part of the bio-blitz on Wanstead Flats on 23 June from 10.30am (meet at the Centre Road car park) and in Wanstead Park on 24 June from 10.30am (meet outside Aldersbrook Riding School stables, Empress Avenue). For more information, call 07505 482 328

KNOWIN G ME In the second of a series of articles by members of the East London ME Group, Debbie Burkett explains what it’s like to live with an illness many believe is not real and why group support is so important

I

had been trying to cope with my mother’s dementia for some years until eventually I realised, having tried many caring options, that a care home was inevitable. So, on a daily basis, I was visiting my mother in the care home and my aunt in my mother’s house while still working long hours in a stressful job as a project manager in IT for the NHS.

In November 2001, I went to The Gambia for a break but I caught a tropical virus. I forced myself to go back to work despite feeling dreadful but I thought ‘mind over matter’ instead. I didn’t even get through a day. As my illness continued, my GP diagnosed Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, sent me for tests and referred me to a chronic fatigue syndrome clinic at Barts (the waiting list was over 13 months). I still thought I’d soon recover. After a year, my sick pay ran out, so I attempted to work part-time – a big mistake as I made my condition much worse, developing balance problems, terrible aches in my limbs and overwhelming fatigue, such that I would sleep for more than 12 hours at a time. The professor at the clinic told me that ME sufferers were often ‘Type A’ personalities and task-driven, but unfortunately, ‘we don’t do personality transplants!’ Eventually, I had to accept I could no longer continue my career. Walking down the road, my body would just stop while my mind was expecting me to continue. I tried to run when I thought a car was going to hit me but my legs just buckled beneath me – very scary, as is the ‘brain fog’ when just forming a sentence is a struggle. When I discovered the East London ME Group, I found people who understood how I felt

and tried to help me come to terms with the loss of my life as it used to be (my career, my dancing, my travelling and more). I had a very ‘boom and bust’ approach as I hated starting tasks and leaving them unfinished and found trying to pace myself impossible. I discovered that others had ‘super-sensitivity’ – not for me to light but to perfume, chemicals and, very unfortunately, to alcohol. I found I was lucky to have a sympathetic GP who realised how ME would devastate my life whereas others had been disbelieved for years. I can now cope with travelling again at a gentle pace if I rest alone one day in three. At home, I need to lie down for much of the day but it means I can plan to go out with friends (hence the photo of me at a theatre venue with non-alcoholic drink in hand!). We share what we think has helped us to manage our ME – we are all different, with different symptoms and problems. My plea is for more research and my hope is for a cure. The next meeting of the East London ME Group will take place at Wanstead House on 9 June from 2.30pm to 5pm. For more information, call 07957 152 566 or email ianpurser81@gmail.com

Ahead of a bat walk in Wanstead Park this month, Bob Vaughan takes a look at our local furry flying creatures, which are difficult to see and impossible to hear without specialist equipment

B

ats go almost unnoticed because they are nocturnal and their calls are outside of the normal human hearing range. This makes them a challenge to see, but with a little knowledge and a suitable bat detector (a piece of equipment that converts bat echolocation ‘shouts’ into audible sounds), a few of these cryptic species have been found to be common in Wanstead. The noctule bat (Nyctalus noctula) is one of the larger British bats and can be found in Wanstead Park and out on the Flats at dusk. It nests in and frequents trees. It can sometimes be seen against the bright London skyline as it flies out quite high at 10 to 50 metres with a rapid flight looking to catch insects. With a bat detector, it has a long, low frequency call, around about 20 kHz. Daubenton’s bat (Myotis daubentonii) is a smaller bat and tends to fly low over open water. It is more difficult to see unless it is a moonlit night and you stand by one of the ponds in Wanstead Park and look for its rapid and erratic flight. Using a bat detector, it makes a series of clicks, which when displayed show a high start and plunge to a lower frequency. The clicks accelerate rapidly when it is approaching its insect prey. The common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) is probably our most common bat but it is small with very rapid flight close to trees. This makes it hard to see, but with a bat detector, it has calls between 40 and 50 kHz, so when the clicks are heard, look up towards the trees and try to see its rapidly swerving flight against the sky. There is another, more recently discovered species, soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus

The noctule bat

pygmaeus) with higher frequency calls, but this bat has a rather similar flight and habits to the common pipistrelle, so to distinguish this species requires a well-tuned bat detector. A rather more elusive species has been recorded in Wanstead Park, the brown longeared bat (Plecotus auratus). This is a mediumsized bat, associated with trees and with a strategy of taking insects in flight and off the surface of vegetation in fluttering flight. It is not at all easy to see and it is also difficult to detect as it has a quiet call only audible from about five metres with a standard bat detector. It is out there in Wanstead Park but a challenge to find. A bat walk in Wanstead Park will take place as part of the Wren Wildlife Group’s bioblitz on 23 June from 9pm (meet by the tea hut) – call 07505 482 328

The key to selling in a 2018 market is to listen to your agent. Pricing your property correctly from the very first day it hits the market is

REE

Family houses are still holding up well; twobed flats have been the ones to suffer most out of all properties and this is due to the sheer volume of two-bedroom properties that enter the market. Wanstead is a family area and always has been; therefore, it stands to reason that demand for good quality, threeand four-bedroom homes will remain strong, and this is supported by strong average selling prices over the past 12 months of £734,000 for terraced houses and £866,000 for semi-detached homes.

H ST

Now, this shows that transactions are down on this time last year; however, it’s not all doom and gloom and it doesn’t mean that prices being achieved are necessarily down. Transactions being down is a symptom of fewer buyers hitting the market and that’s for a number of reasons, some of which include restrictions to lending and a general feeling that prices have hit something of a ceiling, along with looming Brexit fears.

HIG

Some 40% of those sales over the past 12 months were flats, achieving an average sales price of £343,996. Houses achieved an average price of £792,170. The total value of sales was £85,908,201 and the highest value recorded by the Land Registry was £650,000 for a flat and £2,113,434 for a house.

paramount – the average time on market has increased significantly and so has the dreaded ‘price reduced’ label we see on Rightmove. Price correctly from the start, listen to the agent’s rationale and present it correctly – buyers simply have more choice at present so make sure you’re doing everything you can to make yours stand out. There has been a correction to prices in the Wanstead market over the past 12 months, that much is clear, and it may be the case some sellers don’t actually know the true current value of their property. So, before you decide to think about moving and start searching Rightmove, it’s always best to get a valuation from a local agent so you know the worst- and best-case scenarios for what your home might achieve. LUXURY (WILD ) LIFE Independent local travel advisor Jack Leaf presents a guide to Sri Lanka, an island in the Indian Ocean boasting elephants, leopards, sloths and whales… and luxury travel at very affordable prices

M

ost first-time visitors to Sri Lanka would first experience the Cultural Triangle, which is best visited between April and September. First stop is Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock fortress, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an optional climb to the Lion Rock – it’ll zap you of precious energy but is worth it for the view. Moving on to Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka, built in the 11th and 12th centuries and another UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll enjoy the ruins of the palace and many other great buildings. After your fix of history, it’s time for Minneriya and ‘The Gathering’, the spectacle of seeing a herd of Asian elephants – 300 in number – converge at the huge reservoir lake. Nowhere else will you see a herd as numerous in number. Lots of birdlife and other wildlife abounds, including crocodiles! Most visitors will want to escape the heat and enjoy a train journey from Kandy as it climbs the mountains way up to Nuwara Eliya. This journey to the Hill Country is one of the most scenic rides I have enjoyed, and when you pass Hatton, which still revels in its colonial past, you will see one tea plantation after another; the panoramic views from the train are like no other. And the cool refreshing air will soon have you appreciating why the locals affectionately refer to it as Little England. From Hatton, those of you with energy to burn can climb the magnificent Adam’s Peak. But it’s leopard viewing that draws tourists to Sri Lanka, and in particular, to Yala National Park. Whilst a viewing of these elusive cats is not guaranteed, if you stay a couple of nights, a sighting becomes more probable, and you

Wild elephants on dusty grass in Minneriya national park in Sri Lanka

will see many other mammals including sloth bears, water buffalo and deer. Despite its small size, Sri Lanka boasts one of the highest rates of biological endemism in the world, whether in plants or animals, and is included among the top five biodiversity hotspots in the world. The ocean around Sri Lanka is home to large families of cetaceans, including the mighty blue whale, sperm whale and lively dolphins. Altogether, 26 species of cetaceans rule the waters surrounding the country, making it one of the best locations for whale and dolphin watching. You have to finish your first visit with a stay in Tangalle, Bentota or Marissa for the beach and whale watching, and then end in Galle, which is the best preserved colonial town – full of colonial architecture, churches and the Dutch fort, fantastic boutique hotels of the highest standard, wonderful cuisine and endless shops. Jack is based in Snaresbrook – visit destiny-travel.co.uk or call 020 8989 6764. For more information on Sri Lanka, visit wavidi.co/srilanka

Stag beetles are rapidly declining across Europe, but they still live in London, mainly in the south and west. We can help them in the east with more log piles in gardens. It’s important to leave wood undisturbed because the larvae will munch away for several years before reaching maturity.

D

ead trees and fallen wood provide a fantastic habitat for wildlife, including mosses, fungi, lichens, numerous insects and the creatures that feed on them like hedgehogs and toads. In fact, nearly half of woodland species are dependent on this part of the forest ecosystem. Over recent years, Britain’s wildlife has suffered enormously from the removal of dead wood as our forests have been developed and ‘tidied up’. Luckily, understanding and attitudes are changing. In Epping Forest, dead wood is mainly left where it has fallen (or been chopped) and closer to home, in areas like Tarzy Wood and St Mary’s churchyard, woodpiles have been created by volunteers. Having a log pile in your garden is one of the quickest and simplest things you can do to help biodiversity in your outdoor space, and with London a hotspot for the endangered stag beetle, you might get some pretty impressive visitors. Even the smallest plot has room for a log pile – you can tuck it out of sight or turn it into a rustic feature. Many of the creatures that log piles attract have snails, slugs and their eggs on their menu, which is good for gardeners too. Bags of logs are available from Heads N Tails on the High Street and Lancaster’s Home and

Garden in Walthamstow, or use old wood from gardens. Never take logs from forests or parkland (there is little enough decaying wood in the wild as it is). Here are five simple steps to make your own log pile: 1. Pick a quiet spot that doesn’t get disturbed – different species prefer sunny or shady locations, so aim for both if you can. 2. Half-bury a few logs – whatever suits the space you’ve got. Regular firewood is fine or use wood from gardens. Try to get lots of nooks and crannies in your stack. Logs of about 10cm in diameter are perfect. 3. You can plant the logs vertically to create a ‘stumpery’ (great for stag beetles) or in a more traditional horizontal construction. 4. If you’ve got more space, logs from bigger trees can be cut into discs (10cm to 20cm thick) and stacked like overlapping cheeses. 5. Whatever your design, add twigs, leaves or wood chippings in the gaps, then let plants scramble over the pile to keep it damp. With your log pile complete, your garden may appeal to a range of new visitors, such as:

zz Invertebrates: according to Buglife, nearly 2,000 British invertebrates require dead wood and use it in many different ways. Stag beetle grubs need damp wood below ground. Leafcutter and mason bees like to nest in pre-existing holes in sunny locations. Spiders may live under bark and woodlice, centipedes, beetles and worms can be found on the underside of logs.

warning signs Local solicitors Wiseman Lee recently acted for the siblings of the late Marcel Chu in a High Court claim against Mr Chu’s carer in relation to a will dispute. Devorah Ormonde reports

M

arcel Chu of South Woodford had made a will at our firm in 2008, which left 26% of his estate to each of his siblings, 7% each to a niece and nephew and 8% to a friend. After his death in May 2014, Donna Henderson, who had been employed as his carer for the last 18 months of his life, produced a new will dated two days prior to his death when he was critically ill in hospital. Ms Henderson was the major beneficiary in the 2014 will, and her children were also left 4% each, while his siblings’ shares were considerably reduced. The striking feature of the 2014 will was that the signature of the testator appeared to bear little resemblance to Mr Chu’s normal signature. It was also considerably more fluent than his signature on other documents in the two weeks prior to his death, so the change could not be explained by frailty hindering him attempting his normal signature. Ms Henderson claimed the reason for the discrepancy was that Mr Chu was struggling to sign the will by himself because of his physical weakness. She stated she held his wrist and hand to support him whilst he held the pen and that the signature was guided by her. Although guided signatures are rare, case law dating back to 1710 has established that it is possible for a testator’s hand or wrist to be supported or assisted to sign a will. However, the action of signing and the formation of the letters cannot be led by the guide. It is therefore important to look at the signature itself where it is produced in circumstances where a testator’s hand is being guided, especially in a situation such as this where the

person who stands to benefit most is the one acting as the guide. In this case, we consulted a handwriting expert to compare the signature on the will with other signatures of Marcel Chu which were known to be genuine. The expert concluded that the signature on the 2014 will was unlikely to be Mr Chu’s and the judge ultimately found that the 2014 will had not been validly executed. Mr Chu’s estate will now be dealt with in accordance with the will he made in 2008. A person who has difficulty in signing their name but wishes to make a will can, in fact, do so without signing the will at all. Under the Wills Act 1837, a testator may direct someone else to sign a will on their behalf and in their presence. To avoid any question of whether such a will was actually signed at the direction of the testator, anyone intending to make a will in this way would be well advised to seek professional assistance. A In the second of a series of articles looking at Wanstead’s ‘hidden doorways’, local resident and photography enthusiast Stephen Lines challenges you to identify the location of this brick-framed entrance point

t this time of year, the transformative power of nature is obvious. The spring snow did not deter the daffodils from blooming in a swathe of gold on Christchurch Green or the bluebells from raising their fragrant heads in Chalet Wood. The cherry blossom, stripped by the winds, has made way for the scented flowers of the hawthorn and the pinkedged, white blossoms of the horse chestnut, like candles on the vast trees along Wanstead High Street. Walking through Wanstead, it is noticeable how the area is transforming. It is as if Wanstead, like nature, is replenishing itself. Small children scooting along to keep up with their parents and young families congregating on the High Street emphasise that Wanstead has a growing, young community. There are also those who have been here for longer. Custodians of a local history and experience to be shared with new Wanstead folk. Time is transformative. A bank might become a bakery, a car showroom may convert into a wine warehouse and the stables of a lost stately home form part of a golf club. Some buildings remain constant but the transformation over time is always evident. My interest in photography was inspired by the transformative power of a photograph. Like nature, this can be dazzling. How many photographs have there been that change the viewer’s paradigm, stimulate an emotion or haunt our memories? To be able to create an image which can tell a story without words must be the ambition of most photographers, myself included. Wandering through the margins of Wanstead, you may come across a new door in an old doorway through a time-worn wall. The grooms and horses may have gone but here is history and the present together in one small space. A hidden door in plain sight. For the doorway location answer, visit wavidi.co/junedoor. Women Wanted With a declining membership, the Wanstead Park Women’s Club is keen to welcome more women to its many and varied talks and events. And men are also invited to speaker evenings, says Brenda Keer

W

anstead Park Women’s Club began life in 1961 with approximately 45 members. It started at the gates of Aldersbrook Primary School with several of the mothers, and the first meetings were held in the school. It was officially opened by an officer of the National Association of Womens’ Clubs (NAWC), to whom we are affiliated. As membership grew, a new venue was needed and for many years now, meetings have been held at Aldersbrook Bowls Club. The headquarters of NAWC are in Romford and ours is the only club in London. National events include an annual conference, carol concert, one-day workshops, Christmas lunch and weekends at various venues throughout the country. We have two founder members still attending. Each week we have a varied programme of talks, games and quizzes. Apart from the usual officers, we have a social secretary and speaker secretary. I joined in 2005 and for the past seven years have been speaker secretary. This entails contacting and booking speakers and arranging fees – trying to get the best deal. On alternate weeks we play games – Scrabble, dominoes, whist – anything that the social secretary decides. As speaker secretary, it is my job to put together as varied a programme as possible, bearing in mind budget constraints. Many charities are willing to speak for a reduced fee and in this way we can balance our talks with professional speakers. One way of obtaining details of people prepared to speak is from the national association. They distribute lists of speakers and demonstrators prepared to travel to our part of north-east London. There are many local organisations on the lookout

Wanstead Park Women’s Club Halloween evening

for contributors and we are able to exchange ideas and recommend interesting talks. Our programme runs from September through to July the following year and is arranged over three terms. At the end of each term we hold a buffet, when members bring a plate of food, and there is always a very good spread with home-made goodies. Our Halloween evening is very popular when we have a fish and chip supper delivered and most of the members dress the part as witches. Tables are decorated with all things creepy and mystical. This can be quite offputting for the deliveryman! At the end of the year, a Christmas dinner is arranged and this is usually held at The Eagle. The speaker evenings are open to visitors – men included – and over the years we have built up a following. However, our membership is diminishing and although we get visitors, we are seeking new members. For an organisation that has been active for over half a century, it is sad to see this decline.
