WANSTE WORKS!AD

If it’s going to work anywhere, then it will work in Wanstead. That’s a phrase I find myself saying often when in conversation about new events, initiatives or projects planned for the local area. It’s said with a certain amount of bias, given this publication thrives on the success of what is a vibrant and proactive community. And it’s become something of a cliché in the lexicon of Wanstead Village Directory speak as I find myself praising the responsiveness of Wanstead folk to new things more and more. But clichés are clichés for a reason. And this one has big names like Art Trail Wanstead and the Wanstead Fringe to prove those reasons are real.

Puzzles & competitions

So, what is it about our village that offers event organisers easy pickings? What is that secret ingredient that gets bums on seats and people talking? I think I’ve answered my own question there: people talk. Communities talk. In fact, the more I think about it, the more important talking – or communication in general – seems to be as the foundation block of any community. If you take away the public venues, the annual festivals and the local clubs, you are still left with a functioning community, albeit one with little to do. But no amount of libraries, halls, talks or organised activities will be able to sustain an uncommunicative community. Communities work when communication works, and – if you will indulge me – I like to think this publication contributes in some small way to those inner workings.

Every month

With exciting events planned for this September’s Wanstead Fringe and art trail, and with the return of Music in Wanstead Park this month, I have little hesitation in predicting their respective successes. If they are going to work anywhere, then they will work in Wanstead. And that’s because Wanstead… works. Lee Marquis, Editor

Last month’s inaugural Aldersbrook Open Gardens Trail has been hailed a success, having raised £3,875 for charity. “Under a blue sky and a blazing sun, 15 gardens on the Aldersbrook Estate opened their doors to raise money for Cancer Research and the Aldersbrook and Wanstead Riding for the Disabled Association. Over 300 tickets were sold and the large numbers of visitors created a festive atmosphere, with friends old and new meeting to celebrate, catch up and exchange gardening tips,” said Judith McCann, one of the organisers. Plans to tackle rough sleeping

Amy’s Day 2018: sponsors wanted

Redbridge Council has been awarded £485k from a £30m government fund to reduce rough sleeping in the borough. The funding will see a dedicated rough sleeping co-ordinator appointed to work with local partners to tackle homelessness. The money will also provide additional beds at a pop-up hostel in Ilford, which offers 42 studio flats. The government scheme aims to halve rough sleeping by 2022 and eliminate it altogether by 2027.

Organisers of the annual Amy’s Day golf and BBQ event are seeking local businesses to sponsor a hole on Wanstead Golf Course. Now in its sixth year, the day is held in memory of Amy Goacher, who died from ovarian cancer in 2012. Since then, Amy’s family have celebrated her life and raised funds for cancer research by holding a golf competition, BBQ and auction. Amy’s Day 2018 takes place on 24 August. Call 07940 450 818

Wanstead resident and actress Charlotte Knowles – who is best known for her role as a waitress on Channel 4’s First Dates – will be helping local singletons find love at a speed dating event next month. “I see love every day and hear stories constantly from friends and family on how hard it is to meet their soulmate. World Cup 2018 sticker swap at Wanstead Library

Local dance journalist and photographer Carole Edrich has launched a magazine app to help support anyone who uses movement in performance. “The app, called Dance GRiST, is just the beginning. I want to use it to help dancers directly, training movement creatives how to create high-quality content (images, videos, words or sounds), how to pitch their ideas and get paid for them,” said Carole, who has an exhibition of her work at Le Petit Corner in Leytonstone from 4 July to 26 August. Wanstead landlord offers a drink on the house at relaunched Leyton pub

A Mass of Thanksgiving to mark the 90th anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wanstead will be celebrated by Alan Williams, Bishop of Brentwood, on 19 July from 7.30pm. “During the Mass, Gary Dench, a young seminarian, will be ordained to the diaconate by the Bishop,” said a church spokesperson. The first parish priest, Father Basil Booker, was appointed in August 1919 and purchased a market garden on Cambridge Park on which to build a church, which opened in October 1928. Visit ourladyoflourdeswanstead.com

A local landlord will be relaunching The Coach & Horses on Leyton High Road this month. The venue dates back to 1863 and was rebuilt in its present form in 1879. “We’re thrilled to be giving this classic, Leyton local a new lease of life. There will be a huge focus on high-quality food, an extensive drinks offering and a lineup of events for everyone, including live blues every Wednesday,” said Ronnie Finch of The Duke in Wanstead, who plans to open in early July and is inviting residents to register for a drink on the house. Outgoing mayor raises £78,000

Local National Trust turns 50

Outgoing Mayor of Redbridge Councillor Linda Huggett’s Appeal Committee raised over £78,000 for charity during her year in office, which came to an end in May. The money will go to Haven House Children’s Hospice and Saint Francis Hospice. New mayor Councillor Debbie Kaur-Thiara has chosen to support Woodford Bridge charity ELHAP, which provides adventure play opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged kids and young adults.

The Woodford and District branch of the National Trust celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and with a change of venue for their monthly events the group will become more accessible to Wanstead residents. The new season of talks starts in September, with meetings scheduled to alternate between nearby Woodford Memorial Hall in South Woodford and All Saints’ Church in Woodford Wells (visitors welcome). The Nightingale pub in Wanstead is due to reopen this month, having been renamed Nightingale on the Green. The new name was hand painted by Perry Signs & Son last month as refurbishment work started to take shape. At the time of writing, details of an opening night celebration were yet to be confirmed but is anticipated for mid-July. The venue – which is a Grade II listed building – is one of east London’s last traditional pubs, having stood on the site, in its current form, since 1851. Visit nightingaleonthegreen.co.uk

T

he display case in Wanstead Library is ideal for my small, affordable pictures; they don’t get shown very often due to the costs of hanging and commission, which make it impossible to keep prices low. The selection on show covers a range of media. My favourite is oils, but I often use watercolour, acrylic, pastel, inks and egg tempera, and now linocuts, as presented here. I first started selling my paintings when I was coming to the end of my career as an actress, terminated due to the need to care for my husband in his final years. One of my last engagements was as ‘walk-in’ understudy to Miriam Margolyes in The Killing of Sister George. This meant I only had to be in the theatre in case of emergency. So, with time on my hands, I took up pastelling in my

dressing room. Framing the results, they went on show and, to my delight, a number were sold. Watercolour was a challenge for me, but I spent two years mastering the technique. Essentially, it’s a balance between using the right amount of water on the right kind of paper and knowing which pigments stain. My husband bought me some acrylics when they first appeared in the fifties, but I couldn’t take to them. However, they have much improved in recent years and can be a very enjoyable medium to use. I was drawn to egg tempera from a historic point of view, as they were used before the invention of oil paints, and have a unique quality.

21

Ahead of a display of her work at Wanstead Library this month, actorturned-artist Erica Johns talks about her recent passion for linocuts

My recent passion is for linocuts, particularly the ‘reduction’ technique, which means using one piece of lino that is systematically carved away after each colour printing, producing a limited edition of prints. People often say: “Oh, I did that at school,” but they probably didn’t use up to five colours, as I often do. My most recent successful print is of a heron, which has local links – gracing the cover of this publication for one – and being the badge of Wanstead High School, has been popular with some Old Heronians. Erica’s art will be on show at Wanstead Library from 23 July to 4 August. For more information, visit wavidi.co/erica

Celebrating the music In the second of two articles celebrating the return of Music in Wanstead Park this month, event manager Calum Downie explains why he has taken on the project and what we can expect on the day

I

n June 2017 I graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in history and drama. Like most graduates, I had some very big decisions to make with regard to my future. I wasn’t ready for further education but my university experience did show me that I wanted to break into the arts production industry. While studying, I wrote a series of plans for plays and events, thinking long and hard about how I could make them a success, and one of these was Music in Wanstead Park. Having grown up attending the event, it was something I believe the community deserved to have back, having ended in 2016. Music in Wanstead Park is the first event I have organised in its entirety and a stepping stone into the industry I want to build a career in. As event manager, all the decisions and responsibilities fall on my shoulders, which is why I’m working so hard to make it a success. What makes it a success is simple. You need a venue, food, drinks, activities for families and children, commercial craft stalls and, of course, music. What our guests will experience and enjoy on the day is only a tiny part of the work we have put in. The difficulties of organising an event of this size comes in liaising and bringing all these elements together. For the last six months, I have written countless emails, letters and applications to ensure all the different agencies and businesses are working together to achieve our aims. With just a few weeks to go, I am very excited and proud of what we have achieved so far and the experience has been truly invaluable. At the time of writing this (mid-June), I am happy to have finished the legal process for

the event, and knowing we have the support of Redbridge Council and Epping Forest means I can pour all my remaining energy into making the event enjoyable for our guests. So, what can you expect? While it is called Music in Wanstead Park, it’s fundamentally a community and family event and we want that to shine through on the day. Joining us this year are a number of local businesses, such as Time for Tea, The Wanstead Tap, The Cocktail Van and Squid Inc. For our younger guests, there will be fairground rides, Punch and Judy shows and a circus skills school to name a few. As always, the musical talent of Wanstead is at the forefront of the event. Wanstead High School bands will be kicking things off while Tricity Vogue and 40 Elephant Gang will be rocking us into the night. Organising Music in Wanstead Park has become part of my everyday life recently and when it is over I will miss it. I have done all I can to bring this event together. The only thing missing is you! I hope to see you all there. Music in Wanstead Park will take place on 14 July from 2pm to 9.30pm (adults: £12; children: £6). Visit wavidi.co/miwp

Jo Blackman, Paul Donovan and Daniel Morgan-Thomas were each elected as councillors for Wanstead Village ward in May. Here, the three Labour representatives explain how their work is progressing

I

t’s been a few weeks since we were elected councillors for Wanstead Village. As new councillors we’ve had a lot to learn. Thankfully, Redbridge Council has provided training on the various departments, policies and functions. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from council officers and councillors. The local elections to Redbridge Council saw Labour win 51 seats and Conservatives 12. This was a historic result, giving Labour their biggest-ever group in Redbridge and a second consecutive term. Our focus will be delivering on the manifesto pledges and responding to local concerns. Casework comprises the most significant amount of our time as councillors. During the local election campaign, we picked up a number of concerns, which we have since been following up. And we are regularly contacted by email, social media and phone about a range of concerns related to council services. Though generally people seem pleased with the services they receive, recurrent concerns include keeping our communal spaces clean and tidy, and crime. On concerns about litter and street cleaning, we’re in touch with street cleansing officers to ensure any spots are cleaned up and have so far been impressed with their responsiveness. We would also encourage residents to use the ‘report it’ function on the council’s website. On crime, we’ve already met with the local neighbourhood watch and Safer Neighbourhoods Team. We’re pleased with the recent drop in reported crime in Wanstead but are not complacent. We encourage all local residents to heed the crime prevention advice from the police and play an active role in their

Left to right: Councillors Paul Donovan, Jo Blackman and Daniel Morgan-Thomas

neighbourhood watch groups. We are also continuing to campaign for the government to stop the severe cuts to the policing budget. Police need to be adequately resourced to maintain a presence on our streets and ensure crimes are responded to. Council committees perform a vital role in scrutinising the work of the council and we were pleased that between the three Wanstead Village councillors, we’ve covered most of the main committees, which should give us a good overview of the council’s work. We’ve enjoyed meeting many local residents during the campaign and now as councillors. Wanstead Village is a truly special place and a model for many other communities. We want to work with the local community to ensure it continues to thrive. We are keen to support local events and initiatives, so do get in touch to tell us how we can help. Wanstead Village ward councillors hold surgeries on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month (excluding August) from 10am to 12 noon in the Vestry of Christ Church. SAFARI, THAT S COOL Independent local travel advisor Jack Leaf presents a guide to the Samara Game Reserve in South Africa, which, if you visit at the right time of year, is the perfect place to turn down the heat on safari

O

n my first visit to South Africa 26 years ago, I arrived at the Eastern Cape city of East London during a horrendous rainstorm. We went to the airline office in town to change our ticket. On explaining our next stop would be Port Elizabeth, and then Cape Town, the clerk suggested we go straight to Cape Town! I am delighted to say Port Elizabeth has come a long way since then, not least to enjoy the fantastic old charm hospitality at Hacklewood Hill guest house, a city walking tour including ‘Mandela Way’ Route 67, year-round whalewatching and a visit to the biggest penguin breeding colony in the world – and not forgetting a number of beautiful beaches too. When you think about an African safari, no doubt you conjure up an image of The Big Five and oppressive heat. Allow me to introduce you to an alternative: Samara Game Reserve. This malarial-free location in the Karoo region is perfect for those of you not used to an African safari, or conversely, if you have experienced a safari replete with animals in abundance and are now wanting to enjoy diverse scenery. But most importantly, from April to June, the Cape is at its coolest; in fact, at times it stays surprisingly cold through the daytime. Here, Samara comes into its own with open fireplaces throughout the lodge, hot water bottles and fleece ponchos on the drives and wholesome cooking washed down with lots of convivial drinking. At Samara, the emphasis is on connecting with the land; the scenery is varied and always breathtaking. Its location means it is semi-arid, thus rainfall is rare – one minute you’re out on wide open Savanna-like plains observing nearly extinct white and black rhino and moments later you’re amongst acacia trees

Cheetahs on the Samara Game Reserve

watching giraffe and elephants feeding. The crowning glory are the cheetahs – and that you can get down from the Land Rover and walk to within 15 metres of them. One day, we followed a majestic male; the next day we followed a female and her four cubs. Samara encourages a combined stay with Drostdy Hotel in Graaff Reinet, South Africa’s fourth-oldest city after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam. Samara is 45 minutes by road from Graaff Reinet, or a short helicopter flight across the Valley of Desolation, probably the most awesome desert topography I have ever seen. Leslie provides superb commentary during his tour of the valley, explaining the flora, fauna and geology, while Buck provides an insight into Graaff Reinet’s prosperous history and hopes for its future on his city tour. Samara Game Reserve are providing an exclusive offer for Wanstead Village Directory readers. In the fourth of a series of articles charting the Wild Wanstead project – which aims to transform Wanstead into a multi-garden nature reserve – Nicola Steele explains how hedges are Britain’s unsung garden heroes, helping protect both wildlife and Londoners

The London Wildlife Trust has produced a guide on how to plant a native hedge – visit wavidi.co/hedges. Mixed hedging packs are available from suppliers like Habitat Aid, Wriggly Wigglers and Crocus. For more information on the Wild Wanstead project, including 10 ‘wild ways’ to make your garden more welcoming to wildlife, visit wildwanstead.org

39

L

ast year, research highlighted the benefits of hedging in protecting urban residents from air pollution, as well as being fantastic for wildlife. With box blight having a devastating effect in many Wanstead gardens – and Redbridge one of the worst places in the country for air quality – maybe now is a good time to rethink the use of hedge plants in our gardens. They’re far cheaper than walls and fences, and thorny species like berberis, hawthorn, holly and mahonia deter burglars. Britain has lost many of its hedgerows. Since World War Two, hedgerows have been removed at a much faster rate than they’ve been planted, and in some parts of the country, 50% have now gone. Although hedges are being replanted and old techniques, such as hedge-laying, are being revived, many agricultural practices eradicate wildlife. Therefore, urban habitats like Wanstead gardens provide important wildlife resources. Hedges support up to 80% of woodland birds and 30% of our butterflies. Bird species common in our gardens, such as blue tit, blackbird and robin, prefer tall hedges, which also provide a linear route for foraging bats. Nighttime invertebrates also benefit; they love white or cream flowers, so hawthorn and viburnum are perfect. When planting a hedge, choose a species mix that provides year-round interest with berries and seeds or evergreen species, for example:

zz Yew: birds and small mammals love the berries and

zz Hawthorn: attractive blossom and red berries zz Guelder rose: lovely flowers, bright red berries and autumn colour – popular with birds zz Wild privet: helps butterflies and moth caterpillars, attracting insects and birds The cheapest way to create a native hedge is from whips. They are bare root saplings, usually a year old, and can be bought in bundles or single plants from November to February. They will be dormant, so don’t be put off if they look like sticks; they will burst into leaf in the spring. A double-staggered row will create a thicker hedge. Help the plants develop quicker by using tree guards, which create a microclimate, promoting growth. Whilst the hedge is developing, mulching the base will reduce competition and promote development. Once established, leave the hedge base to grow grass or plant some wildflowers to provide ground habitat.

Native species will quickly form a dense barrier that tolerates pruning. Periodically cutting it back hard will encourage it to thicken up. Avoid cutting Air pollution during the bird nesting causes an estimated season (March to August) 40,000 early deaths annually – it is an offence under in Britain and is worse in London the Wildlife and than elsewhere in the UK. A Surrey Countryside Act to University study published last year intentionally take, found that hedges (especially evergreen damage or destroy ones) reduce the impact of pollution from the nest of any wild vehicles. Researchers concluded that bird while in use or hedges act as a barrier, slowing down being built. airflow from car exhausts, catching pollutants on leaves and offering protection for homes.

zz Dog rose: sweet-scented, pinkwhite blooms and red hips in the autumn zz Holly: slow-growing, creating an impenetrable evergreen hedge, even in deep shade

use the hedges as a habitat

A pick-me-up Last year, Dan Slipper launched a series of regular litter picking events in Wanstead. This month, he continues his campaign to keep our streets clean and our spirits high, and invites you to join him

I

want to discuss litter. Next time you go outside your front door, take a look around. Litter is everywhere. I know we have become accustomed to it and Wanstead is much better than other areas in Redbridge, but once you notice the litter, you will realise just how much there is on our streets, on our roads, in our hedgerows and in our green spaces. Litter is not only a problem in Wanstead. It is a national and global problem. Everyone who watched Blue Planet II will know that around eight million tons of plastic waste enters the oceans every year, where it can prove fatal to marine life. Did you know that annually the Highways Agency clears more than 180,000 sacks of litter from our motorways and major A roads at a cost to the taxpayer of £10m? According to the charity Keep Britain Tidy, cleaning and tidying our streets, parks and other public spaces costs England about £1 billion a year. Litter is not just about the discarded glass bottles, straws, plastic bags, takeaway packaging, cotton ear buds and coffee cups that spoil the look of where we live and work and where our children play. It also has a knock-on effect. Research has shown that litter acts as a causal factor in crime, contributes to road accidents, damages cars and bikes, exacerbates refuse and wild fires, encourages vermin, affects house prices and can negatively influence mental wellbeing. According to a recent House of Commons briefing paper, a report from 2017 found 81% of people have said they are angry and frustrated by the amount of litter in the country. If the research is to be believed, many people in Wanstead are likely to be feeling angry

Volunteers gather on George Green to begin a morning of litter picking

and frustrated about the amount of litter in our local area. But there is no need to feel powerless. There is something you can do. Last year I launched a bi-monthly litter picking event attended by local residents, community groups and volunteers from Goodgym Redbridge. We meet on a Saturday morning, divide into groups and collect rubbish from some of the worst affected areas, such as George Green, Christchurch Green, Wanstead High Street and Cambridge Park Road. So far in 2018 we have been part of the national Great British Spring Clean and Great Plastic Pick Up campaigns. Our work is really starting to make a difference to the local area. Our next event is this month and we will once again be tackling areas in need of a good clean-up. The more people who come, the more impact we can have. So, please don’t feel powerless about litter. Come and join us! A Wanstead litter pick will take place on 7 July. Meet by the George Green water fountain at 10am. For more information, email danielslipper@googlemail.com

With recent cases demonstrating how solicitors can be duped by impostors, Derek Inkpin, a partner at Wiseman Lee, says the industry needs to sharpen up its act in the ongoing battle against identity theft

I

read an article recently where the journalist opined that we live in scary times, which I thought was a statement of the obvious. This is particularly so where the number of frauds seem to be on the increase every time we use a computer. The rewards for dishonesty in property transactions are clearly substantial. Where criminal activity is obvious, we recognise it and can respond immediately. Identity theft, however, can strike when we are not even aware of it and determined impostors can carry out their scams before we realise they have taken place. Two recent Court of Appeal decisions in the cases of Dreamvar Limited and P&P Limited highlighted issues of identity theft where the sellers’ solicitors did not realise they were acting for impostors pretending they were genuine sellers. Space here does not allow for the facts but if you own a property, particularly where it is mortgage-free, you are vulnerable. In these cases, the buyers’ solicitors transferred the money due on completion of the transaction to the sellers’ solicitors, who then forwarded the sale proceeds to the fraudsters who (you will not be surprised) disappeared with the money. For the protection of sellers and buyers, there exists The Law Society Code for Completion by Post and the Money Laundering Regulations, which, quite properly, solicitors have to comply with in conveyancing transactions. What the court found in these appeals was that, in effect, the sellers’ solicitors confirmed to the buyers’ solicitors that they acted for a genuine seller, and if this turns out to be incorrect, it is not enough for the selling solicitors to say they acted reasonably.

It is vital the identity of the seller be carefully checked, but the cleverness of fraudsters producing a genuine-looking false passport and utility bill could make this difficult. Nevertheless, a clear message to solicitors acting for sellers is that they must sharpen up their act because failure to do so will likely render those solicitors legally liable: the buyer has not actually completed the purchase of the property because the true owner has not sold it. The court has the power to relieve solicitors from liability if they act reasonably, but if the completion money is paid to an imposter, this is not likely to happen. It is important to emphasise that each case is decided on its own facts, which is why any future cases will be decided on what is fair. What the court decided with these appeals is that the selling solicitors effectively guaranteed they were acting for a genuine seller. Get that wrong and the impostor will make off with the sale money, leaving both parties’ solicitors and their insurers to pick up the pieces and with a lot of upset occurring for both the genuine owner and the defrauded buyer. mischief in Wanstead! To mark the 80th anniversary of The Beano, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to become mischief makers at Wanstead Library. Christine Thompson from Vision RCL reports

T

In 2018, children all over the UK will be invited to embark on an exciting reading adventure in libraries. This year, the theme will be ‘Mischief Makers’ inspired by the much-loved iconic children’s title The Beano, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary. A number of events will be taking place at Wanstead Library in July and August as part of the challenge, such as slime-making, family storytime and sensory boxes. Taking part is easy. The aim of the challenge is for children to read six library books of their choice during the summer holidays. Children can read whatever they like – fiction, fact books, joke books, picture books, audiobooks – just as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are fantastic rewards to collect along the way, including a certificate and a medal. The scheme promises to encourage reading on a giant scale. As children read over the summer, they will use their wits and power of observation to complete a treasure map and pick up some stickers along the way. Younger children, who are not yet reading, can earn a certificate of their own for visiting the library and borrowing books throughout the summer.

© Dale Cherry/The Reading Agency With thanks to Idea Store Watney Market

he Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged four to 12 years and helps get three-quarters of a million children into libraries to boost their reading skills and confidence. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.

It is never too early to introduce books and reading. Research has shown that if a parent reads to their infant every day, they will be almost 12 months ahead of those who are read to less often. For children under five years, Wanstead Library will continue to run twice-weekly rhymetimes on Wednesdays (2pm to 2.30pm) and Fridays (11am to 11.30am) throughout the summer holidays. Once your child is in the reading habit and visiting the library regularly, we would love for them to continue. We offer a range of activities during the school holidays, from craft and storytelling to educational workshops. Throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff working alongside teenage and adult volunteers support the children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books. The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge will run in libraries across Redbridge from 14 July to 8 September (free). For more information, visit wavidi.co/src. Martin Jones and Janet McKay will be taking part in this September’s art trail, combining a fine art image with projected animation. Their work looks to find a synthesis between digital media and painting, which they maintain have a similar underlying structure

F

ar from coming to destroy the tradition of painting, digital technology can be seen as fulfilling an agenda that has its roots in the Renaissance. Our aim is to reunite body and soul, and in using both media together, we explore the rhetorical and philosophical polarities that are the basis of our reality. It is not either extreme that determines us, but rather the bi-stable rocking between these extremes. It is certain that, as with the age of Renaissance optics and the more recent age of photography, this new technology will have a huge impact on the practice of painting. We are both accomplished painters and we’re motivated to explore how digital technologies can integrate with and extend the practice of painting. Our work is highly experimental and sometimes difficult to understand in traditional terms, but it is beginning to acquire critical acclaim for its originality and pioneering spirit within the practice of painting. This project is based around the philosopher Hypatia and the library at Alexandria. She was ahead of her time and certainly bothersome to the early Christian Church by whom she was slain. The painting is set in the Libraries Serepium and contains artefacts she is associated with and symbolic references by way of the candles, the frieze and the gathering storm clouds. The projection emphasises the cyclical nature of destruction and rebirth atypical of human civilisation. The Hypatia project is a continuation of the hypercube paintings hanging in Christ Church. Whereas the previous project was abstract, Hypatia is realist; both though rely on the interaction between the digital world

and traditional painting, and both contain a narrative. Although I (Janet) have found painting this challenging, it has also opened my eyes to the way I work at a fundamental level. I decided to concentrate on techniques rather than content, mainly because I know what the content has to be and the way in which the painting and projection should work together. Finding the right techniques to do what I wanted was the imperative at this stage. Obviously, the animation takes a great deal of time to produce and there was a constant to and fro. I realised early on this work would inevitably fall out of step, with the animation taking precedence over the painting, as well as the fact that to paint I need a finished piece of animation to work from. As long as the work remains going in one direction there is no problem with this way of working, except for some difficulties with the management of the project and the inherent problems with being able to visualise what something will look and work like without it being in front of you. The main difficulty has been the two working in sync. We could come up with dozens of ways to explain what they are about and I (Martin) like the insight that it’s the synergy between carbon and silicon, but in truth, as Janet has said, the technical problems took precedence. I was fascinated by the connection between the digital arts and painting. Digital media is still very much in its infancy where the world of ‘fine art’ is concerned. And to most painters it exhibits a coldness and lack of humanity. I disagree with this and one of the points about our work together is to show they are in fact both relying on a virtual world to maintain them.

KNOWIN G ME In the third of a series of articles by members of the East London ME Support Group, Muriael Keogh explains what it’s like to live with an illness many believe is not real and why group support is so important

I

worked in PR for many years. In 1974 I opened a musical instrument shop in Covent Garden and later, I became my husband’s manager in the music business. Life was very busy then. I had bundles of energy. While bringing up our two children, I was fortunate enough to be working from home.

Around 2015 I began to feel very tired; my body ached and I would sleep much more than usual. Various trips to doctors brought no answers. At that time, I was doing volunteer work every Tuesday at the British Heart Foundation shop on Wanstead High Street. I was coming home from the shop one day and found myself walking slower and slower until I came to a complete stop and could not move. I felt utterly exhausted. I eventually got home and slept for seven hours. It was at this time I was diagnosed with ME (chronic fatigue syndrome). It was actually a relief to have the condition diagnosed as it was quite frightening not knowing what was happening to my body ME robs you of so much in your life because you don’t know how you will be feeling from one day to the next. I can be bed-bound on any given day of the week. It’s a matter of wait and see how you feel when you wake up. We refer to a bed-bound day as ‘the crash’, which describes it perfectly. Then you have ‘the fog’ – losing word power in the middle of a sentence and losing track of things and time. It’s a real struggle and so very distressing when you were always a person who coped well in any given situation. People with the condition often call me with regard to the support group. I hear how upset

they are and their relief to find someone who understands what they are going through. There does not seem to be one common denominator with ME. People come to our meetings with their stories and they are for the best part all different. I was in a lonely place with this condition until I found the East London ME Support Group in 2016. The first meeting I attended was actually meant to be the final one. But I decided there and then to try to carry it on as it was a lifeline for fellow sufferers. It helps so much to be with people who understand you and your changed lifestyle. The meetings help in so many ways. People feel less alone. If you have a friend or relation with ME, please contact the group. It would be great to have some funding (I am working on that too). My wish is to raise awareness of ME – more research is urgently needed. People’s lives are being wasted. The next meeting of the East London ME Support Group will take place at Wanstead House on 21 July from 2.30pm to 5pm. For more information, call 07957 152 566 or email ianpurser81@gmail.com

The Bungalow Café EST:1938

Serving Wanstead for 80 years… The Bungalow Café was established in 1938 by Mr and Mrs Godley. Mr Godley was a volunteer firefighter during the Blitz, and this café was used to feed local firefighters, police and the armed forces. We still have a very strong following with the local police to this day. In the 1960s the café was passed on to two Irish ladies who ran it as a coffee shop and diner, serving tea and scones. Then, in the late 1970s, it was taken over by George Demetriou – our predecessor – who ran it up to 2001. The venue is still running as a traditional British café. Our teas and coffees have not increased

in price from the 1970s – we still serve tea for 50p and coffee for 60p. Over the years, The Bungalow Café has become a landmark in Wanstead and we thrive on keeping our prices low and our quality high. We invite you to come and experience a venue that is a cut above the rest.

I

t’s easy to forget how close the bustle and dust of the City of London is while walking through Wanstead. Even more so when summer arrives and the cafes and bars offer opportunities to sit back and peer discreetly through dark glasses at the local passeggiata as the sun sets over each of our three village greens. Midsummer is a time for imagining, a time for magic. Walking out of Tarzy Wood, heading down Hermon Hill, or looking east from Wanstead station, one inclined to romanticism could visualise Wanstead placed on the brow of a hill, bordered to the south and north by woodland and to the west by the planes of Wanstead Flats. It is the holiday season. Some have the opportunity to spend more time with their families, their friends or simply enjoying their own company away from the rigours of work. For others, there may be no change to their routine. The days are longer, the nights shorter. The weather is drier and warmer, but apart from that, their days go by much as they always do. The lives of the people of Wanstead vary greatly. We are all different people brought together by the proximity of this unique area of London.

In the third of a series of articles looking at Wanstead’s ‘hidden doorways’, local resident and photography enthusiast Stephen Lines challenges you to identify the location of these two entrance points

Commemorations of recent tragic events and the associated photographic images remind us how communities can respond with resilience and compassion. Global sporting events can also be metaphors for constructive communities; people from all over the world, exuberant in their loyalties and differences, unified by a shared enthusiasm. On the edges of Wanstead there is a porch that perhaps few hurrying commuters take note of, and just up the hill from an old Wanstead inn, work still goes on behind old, green doors. But to where do they lead? For the doorway location answers, visit wavidi.co/julydoors. To view more of Stephen’s images, visit wavidi.co/slines

Charity begins… The recent furore over the activities of charities means donors should do their homework carefully before parting with any cash, says local resident Steve Wilks

B

ritons are a generous bunch – they gave around £9.7bn to charity last year, according to the Charities Aid Foundation. However, it is important to check that your hard-earned money is making the impact you intend. With negative stories about particular charities emerging earlier this year, such as the wrongdoing at Oxfam, it can raise doubts where our money is going. So, how can donors ensure money is being spent appropriately? To really understand a charity’s work takes a lot of time and effort. It is suggested you look at what the big donors do and copy them. However, this can lead to a clustering of funds around the bigger charities, with smaller ones not getting such a big slice of the fundraising pie. Look at the charity’s impact and how they market it. Impact is key – not just what activities it carries out but the tangible benefits that arise from what it successfully achieves. You can glean this from the work it mentions on its website and its annual report. Look to see whether there is an improvement and what impact it has had. It can be easy to be put off by charities that admit to failing or mistakes, especially when they are severe. However, recent events at Oxfam have also suggested that what makes it even worse is when they try to cover them up. Admitting mistakes is a sign of strength and shows honesty and transparency. It is also essential not to be over-concerned about administration costs. While it is understandable that every penny of your hard-earned donation should go straight to the frontline activity, it is also important that a well-run charity has money spent on

administrative procedures to ensure the frontline activities are properly supported and the money is spent wisely, complying with charity accounting standards and regulations. Pay should also be proportionate. While some chief executives earn pay in the six figures, the vast majority do not get anywhere near that amount. Some CEOs are running huge organisations with massive fundraising operations, and with a trading arm with more shops than Next. Put in that context, six figures does not seem out of kilter. However, at the other end of the scale, a charity would need a very good reason for fundraising or administration costs to take up more than half of the charity’s yearly income. If you are still worried about where your money is going, you could always volunteer to get a first-hand view. There are loads of charities that need your time where you will know you are making a difference. And if you are happy with how things are going and can see the charity’s positive impact for yourself, you could always donate money as well. In the third of a series of articles looking at the issues surrounding divorce, local resident and divorce consultant Sonia Limbada explains the nine things you must consider before you separate

I

f you are about to embark upon a divorce, it is a good idea to plan ahead, so to help you, I have devised a list of nine things you must consider. 1. Financial support If you are on low income, think about how you are going to support yourself during and after the divorce. Will your ex support you while you agree your settlement? You may also want to contact your local benefits office to check what you are entitled to. If you are already receiving benefits, you need to notify them of your new status. 2. Where will you live? Work out where you will both live – this is particularly important if you have young children. If you are going to move out of the family home, you may need to register a charge on the property if your name is not on the house deeds. 3. Council tax If your spouse has left the family home, you can enquire as to whether you qualify for a single person’s discount. 4. Life insurance If you have listed your spouse as a beneficiary on your insurance policies, you need to reconsider this. 5. Joint bank accounts Discuss whether you will continue to run a joint account, close it or transfer it. Before you put a stop to any account, make provision for any standing orders and direct debits that go out on a regular basis. Credit cards If either of you have a second card on the other’s credit card account, then you should

discuss whether you are going to cancel this. Think carefully about how reliable your spouse is before you do so and notify them of your intention. If you are the second cardholder, make sure your card is still active before you use it. 6. Do you have a will? If you do not have a will, you should consider making one. If you already have a will, consider whether it should be amended. 7. Assets Make an inventory of valuable family possessions so you know what you have. 8. Build a support network One often overlooked aspect of divorce is the emotional toll on you and your family. Surround yourself with people who can help you through this difficult time. Having the right kind of support can make all the difference as you work your way through the divorce process. Sonia Limbada is a divorce consultant providing guidance on amicable divorces. Wanstead on show In the first of a series of articles looking at the annual phenomenon that is the Wanstead Fringe, Giles Wilson is excited to reveal that 2018 is the year live theatre will be added to the billing

W

hat sort of place do you want Wanstead to be? That was one of the questions a tiny group of Wanstead residents asked six years ago. The answer was that we wanted Wanstead to be as vibrant culturally as it was socially. We wanted it to be a place with music, film, comedy, talks and – we dared to dream – live theatre. The result was the Wanstead Fringe. With no experience in running events, we ploughed on, and something rather amazing happened: when we asked people to do things, they said yes. Slowly at first, but soon the ‘yeses’ came thick and fast. And so the Wanstead Fringe takes place again this year, from 8 to 15 September, with more than 30 events of different styles, including the open-air Wanstead Kinema, live music, discussion, book talks, food and drink tastings and more. We’re grateful to our sponsors, Petty Son and Prestwich and Edwards Duthie, for their continued support, and to our new backers THP accountants too. There is still time – just – to set up your own event. We can give practical help and publicity if you have the ideas and determination to get organising. This is the way the Fringe works best – with people doing things for themselves. Until this year, however, one item on our original wishlist had remained a tough nut to crack: live theatre. An early putdown we received – “How can it be a fringe without theatre?” – had stayed with us, but making it happen was proving tricky. I’m delighted to be able to report that 2018 will be the year that live theatre does indeed come to the Wanstead Fringe.

We’ve teamed up with a professional theatre company, which has made it its mission to revive a tradition of West End standards outside the West End. It has taken productions to seaside towns and other communities across the UK that had given up hopes of having plays staged. They are now bringing their mission to Wanstead. Details will be released in the coming weeks. The play will be a classic, with proven appeal to families. The whole thing is very exciting – we hope it could be the start of live theatre becoming a regular fixture of the Fringe. We do have a request though. The finances of staging theatre are precarious, and we are keen to make tickets as affordable as possible – we want everyone to share the joy of live theatre. So, if you know of a business that would sponsor the production, or if you too dream of sharing the joy of live theatre and can help us financially, please do get in touch. This new venture will, we hope, make Wanstead a little more like the place it can be. The Wanstead Fringe 2018 will take place at various venues in the local area from 8 to 15 September. Neighbourly invite Stephen Ellery is conductor of the London Gala Orchestra – which has recently become resident orchestra at St John’s Church in Leytonstone – and Wanstead residents are invited to enjoy their concert this month

I

grew up in Leytonstone playing clarinet and guitar. At school we had a band called The Orbits. In 1988 I left England to study music in Poland, which was just freeing itself from the Iron Curtain. In search of adventure and more music, I went further east and studied for four years in St Petersburg under the famous conducting teacher Ilya Musin. From 1995 I spent two years working in opera theatres in Vladivostok and Yakutsk. During the summers I played concerts in Peru. From 1998 I spent seven years in Japan and go back frequently to conduct concerts and operas. I have worked with major orchestras in Poland and we regularly tour Germany and Denmark. In 2019 we embark on a Game of Thrones 30date tour of Switzerland, Germany and Austria followed by a tour of China. I met Leytonstone-based musician Wilfred Goddard of the London Gala Orchestra (LGO) in 2011 and was fascinated by his exciting UK touring activity, performing at, among other venues, Sadler’s Wells Theatre, the London Coliseum, Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall. So it followed that for my next St Martin in the Fields concert in 2012 I engaged the LGO. That concert was very well received and since then we have worked together many times at such places as New Year Viennese music concerts in Bath and Salisbury, summer open-air concerts in Bedford Park and Castle Howard, as well as a CD recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. Each year, the LGO performs at over 40 venues across the country, providing an exciting range of concerts, musical events and corporate entertainment. In the past year alone, the LGO has played to over 50,000 people, many of them attending on a regular basis.

Soloists who have appeared with the LGO range from Placido Domingo, Paul Potts and Aled Jones to local crossover artists such as Charlotte Jaconelli (from Chigwell) and Joanna Forest (from Loughton). We began performing at St John’s Church during the Leytonstone Festival in 2015 and over the past three years have seen an optimistic growth in our local audience. After our well-attended Classics for Pleasure concert in January, Reverend David Britton suggested the LGO could become the resident orchestra of the church, so we immediately set out to plan the first series of concerts, beginning with our opera double bill this month. Over the rest of the year, we will also perform an open-air spectacular at Gisborough Priory on 29 July, a Polish centenary concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 11 November and the New Year Viennese Gala at Saffron Walden on 5 January. The London Gala Orchestra will perform at St John’s Church in Leytonstone on 7 July from 7.30pm (tickets from £8). For more information, visit wavidi.co/lgo
