In an era of fake news, media bias and political change, our interpretation of the world around us has never been more important. Fact checking is vital, but understanding the reasons behind the alternative truths is paramount. Being aware of a publication’s inherent bias is an integral part of reading the news, but taking the time to draw your own conclusions is crucial. Listening to the words and watching the actions of our political leaders is one thing, understanding their agenda is more revealing… Sometimes, we need to look at things differently. Following the headlines of horrific attacks and unimaginable tragedies, we are often shown – and encouraged to take hope from – the reassuring sides of humanity. The good Samaritans coming to the aid of those in need; the communities pulling together to help those who have suffered. It’s a simple and powerful example of looking at things differently. But it need not end there, and it need not be restricted to the simplicity of looking for the good in a bad situation. For when we look at things differently, we give ourselves a chance to react differently and to form an alternative response. So, before I risk becoming too bombastic (too late?), how can I tie this up while maintaining at least the minimum of connection to a local community magazine? Suffice to say we are biased – unashamedly so – and so are you. We all are. We present our monthly interpretation of Wanstead, showing all that’s good (and sometimes bad, but mostly good) in its community and environs. But there is more to Wanstead than can be encapsulated in 96 pages. More stories that could be told, more art that could be printed and more events that could be listed. Digest our content, look at things differently, and see what version of Wanstead you can find. If it’s better than our version, I want to know. Lee Marquis, Editor

New economic growth strategy

Statement on fire safety

Redbridge Council is developing a new economic growth strategy that will set out a programme aimed at ‘unlocking the borough’s potential and maximising growth’. The strategy has five themes: transforming town centres; creating the right environment for enterprise; building new homes; ensuring everyone shares the prosperity; and enabling highquality spaces. A consultation runs until 4 September. Visit wavidi.co/egs

The council has issued a statement on fire safety following the blaze at Grenfell Tower in north Kensington last month. “Redbridge Council has 18 housing blocks above five stories, and we have fire risk assessments in place for all our housing stock… We will be carrying out a review of these along with reviewing our fire compartmentation reports, which relate to restricting the spread of fires,” said Councillor Jas Athwal.

The new equipment the PTA hope to install with Tesco funding

Wanstead artist Naomi Fenton has one of her images on display in the Not The Royal Academy 2017 summer exhibition. Over 12,000 paintings are submitted every year to the prestigious Royal Academy summer exhibition, with only 800 selected. The Llewellyn Alexander Gallery on the South Bank offers the unsuccessful artists a second chance, displaying ‘the best of this year’s work submitted to the Royal Academy but not hung’. The exhibition is on show until 19 August. Visit wavidi.co/ntra2017

Wanstead Church School is one of three good causes shortlisted in the local area to receive funding from Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative, which offers grants of up to £4,000 – all raised from the 5p plastic bag levy – to local community projects. The amount awarded will be subject to a customer vote using tokens given to shoppers in participating stores. Voting will be open throughout July and August. The school – which has around 250 pupils – will use the money to install new equipment in the junior playground.

The Comedy of Errors kicks off open-air theatre season in Wanstead Park

Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club officially opened its refurbished pavilion last month. The improvements at the Overton Drive venue – made possible by a Sport England Inspired Facilities grant and a legacy donation from the late former member Terry O’Connor – include a new kitchen and ladies and disabled toilets. “The refurbished pavilion significantly improves the standard of facilities that we can offer our members and the local community,” said club chairman Martin Pluck. The club’s president, John Gray, cut the ribbon.

Illyria theatre group will return to Wanstead Park this summer for a trio of productions as part of their 26th open-air touring season. The first performance will see the experienced cast tackle Shakespeare’s ‘funniest and most rumbustious’ play The Comedy of Errors (7 July; 6pm to 9.30pm). This will be followed by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes (10 August; 2pm to 5.30pm) and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (20 August; 2pm to 5.30pm). Audience members are invited to bring a picnic. Call 020 7332 1911 or visit wavidi.co/col

kenneth More theatre, sunday 16th July, 7PM Based on the hit 1976 film starring a preteen Scott Baio and Jodi Foster and featuring a catchy, swinging score by the composer of The Muppet Movie, Bugsy Malone is good, clean, family fun! Two gangs comprised completely of children, square off in a 1920s rivalry of Capone-ian standards. Dandy Dan’s gang has gotten the upper hand since obtaining the “splurge” gun (a weapon that shoots whipped cream). Now, Fat Sam and his bumbling buffoons are in real trouble! Bugsy Malone, is thrust not-so-willingly into the gangster limelight when he becomes the last chance that Fat Sam’s gang has of surviving. All Bugsy really wants to do is spend time with his new love, Blousey, but that just isn’t in the cards for our hero. Following on from

their great success of 100% Distinction in the Trinity Musical Theatre exams, students will take you back in time and you’ll see them in a completely new light. Bugsy Malone is a master class in musical comedy and will hopefully have you in uproarious laughter.

Mr and Mrs Edward North Buxton pictured in The Essex Chronicle, 11 January 1924

Eton Manor RFC hosted its second annual summer ball last month, and with over 300 guests filling a marquee on the Nutter Lane grounds it was deemed ‘bigger and better’ than last year. “It was amazing to have 320 club members under one roof… The club is growing each year… our youth section is now one of the biggest in Essex,” said Ian Edwards, the club’s director of rugby. Auction and raffle prizes included tickets to watch England play in the Autumn Internationals and a meal at The Duke pub, which organised the event.

British Empire Medal for Wanstead resident and tireless fundraiser

New benches installed in Wanstead Park following Tesco funding Installing new benches in Wanstead Park

Fundraiser, Wanstead resident and Pearly Queen of Old Kent Road Doreen Golding was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2017, announced last month. Doreen – who has lived in Wanstead for over 50 years and is chair of the Wanstead Historical Society – was one of 1,109 people who made the list, having been recognised for her services to charity. “The Wanstead Historical Society is delighted with this excellent news, and we offer her our heartiest congratulations,” said John Smith.

The worn-out benches and tables outside the refreshment kiosk in Wanstead Park were replaced last month following a grant of £8,000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help programme. “Our thanks go to Tesco for the funding and to the City of London for its support,” said John Meehan, chairman of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, which spearheaded the application. The benches were officially opened by Philip Woodhouse, chairman of the City of London’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, on 28 June. Visit wansteadpark.org.uk

Tree feSt fest A community festival in Tarzy Wood this month will offer residents of all ages the chance to climb up – and above – the trees of this often overlooked woodland. Epping Forest Keeper Alison Tapply reports To advertise, call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

T

here is a small area of woodland nestled between the hustle and bustle of Wanstead High Street and New Wanstead known as Tarzy Wood. It gets its name from the tar-covered fence that was erected in the 1800s in a vain attempt to enclose and build on the land. Outraged locals tore the fence down and since then Tarzy Wood has become part of Epping Forest, owned and managed by the City of London Corporation. What, to some, may seem a formidable place to enter from the outside, taking a stroll up one of the paths you will pass by large, majestic oak trees and onto a small grass plain in the middle. The road melts away; the sound of cars is replaced by birdsong. A place of beauty and relaxation, it is well worth a visit. A lunchtime picnic in the middle, perhaps? Or why not join the fun and celebrate this often overlooked woodland between 10am and 5pm on Sunday 16 July at the Tarzy Woodfest? Enjoy local community group stalls, live music, food and drink. There will be storytelling, bug hunting and bushcraft workshops for children running throughout the day. But you will also have the chance to try something new. Children can enjoy the wonderful opportunity to climb with the Forest’s arborists and sit amongst the tree branches in our children’s tree climbing

sessions. For adults, you can watch the tree canopy shrink as you rise to 100 foot above Wanstead and take in panoramic views of the city in our tree canopy experience! Admission to Tarzy Woodfest is free but some activities are chargeable. The workshops can be booked on the day, but the children’s tree climbing sessions and the tree canopy experience must be booked in advance (tickets will not be available on the day). Local volunteer group #TidyTarzy have been working hard over the last six months, in conjunction with the Epping Forest Keepers and Vision Redbridge Ranger Team, to improve pathways and access to Tarzy Wood, creating clear sight lines to encourage people in to enjoy it. Epping Forest is a registered charity, run mainly on donations from the City of London Corporation at no cost to the taxpayer. If you would like to get involved with #TidyTarzy, you would be most welcome (email tidy.tarzy@gmail.com).

Tarzy Woodfest will take place on 16 July from 10am to 5pm (free entry). Time slots for the children’s tree climbing sessions (£5) and adult tree canopy experience (£10) must be booked in advance. Visit wavidi.co/tarzy or call 020 7332 1911

A weekly highlight

Ruth Adams recently visited the Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind, a Thursday afternoon club for those with poor sight. In the first of a series of articles, Ruth talks to member Edna Buckley

I

visited a unique club recently to chat to some of the members. They all attend the Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind, a long name for an extremely friendly Thursday afternoon club for those with poor sight. The club has been operating since 1942, currently from a church hall in Woodford Green, although it’s not always been there. Members are aged between late 50s and 104, but there are no official age requirements. The club’s chair, Carole McNeil, started as a volunteer driver inspired by the fact that her mother had been blind. “I’m not quite sure how I ended up as chair,” she explained modestly. Carole kindly introduced me to some of the club’s members. Volunteers are hugely valued by the members and with good reason. Some transport members in their cars, others help out at the club, one will cut members’ nails and another organises high-quality entertainment. There are also volunteer cake bakers supplying delicious refreshments. “Our current batch of Woodford County High School volunteers are a bit tied up with exams at the moment, but they plan to come in their school holidays,” Carole told me. The atmosphere at the club was relaxed and informal, with members clearly enjoying themselves. I spoke to Edna Buckley from Wanstead, a regular attendee for three years, having been told about it by another member. Edna told me: “I think this is a really wonderful club and I so look forward to coming, it’s honestly the highlight of my week. I am lucky enough to get a lift from one of the volunteers, although some people come by Dial-a-Ride. I’ve made new friends here

because we all have something in common. Around 30 years ago, I was diagnosed with glaucoma but unfortunately, now have macular degeneration, too. I used to work in insurance for AXA before I retired and now I use four different strength magnifying glasses and a speaking watch and clocks to help me.” “The weekly entertainment is fantastic,” she continued. “We have singers, local choirs, live musicians and all sorts. It’s wonderful. This club really keeps us going. There are outings, parties, Christmas dinners and all of the volunteers here are so kind and friendly. One of the volunteers, Claudine, will sew a button on for you or do a small sewing repair. Things like that are difficult when you can’t see well.” “There’s plenty of room for new members and new volunteers, so I hope people give our club a try.” The Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind meet in the United Free Church in Woodford Green on Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm. Ready to read?

Christine Thompson from Redbridge Libraries invites local children to get ready for a summer of fun-packed activities at Wanstead Library. Are your kids ready for a challenge and a chance to earn a medal?

T

he Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged four to 12 years and helps get three-quarters of a million children into libraries to boost their reading skills and confidence. The Reading Agency and local libraries are delighted to present the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge: Animal Agents, which will feature a whole host of clever creatures ready to solve all kinds of crimes! This band of furry, slippery and feathered friends is specially trained to use their skills and natural instincts to unravel mysteries – with a huge helping of fun along the way. This year’s theme will feature great illustrations from Tony Ross, the illustrator of the Horrid Henry series. A number of events will also be taking place at Wanstead Library in July and August as part of the challenge, from animal face painting to puppet making and other craft workshops. Taking part is easy. The aim of the challenge is for children to read six library books of their own choice during the summer holiday. There are fantastic rewards to collect along the way, including a certificate and a medal. The scheme promises to encourage reading on a giant scale. As children read over the summer, they will use their wits and power of observation to sift through clues and even pick up some stinky stickers along the way. Younger children, who are not yet reading, can earn a certificate of their own for visiting the library and borrowing books throughout the summer. It is never too early to introduce books and reading. Research has shown that if a parent

reads to their infant every day, they will be almost 12 months ahead of those who are read to less often. For children under five years, Wanstead Library will continue to run twice-weekly Rhymetimes on Wednesdays (2pm to 2.30pm) and Fridays (11am to 11.30am) throughout the summer holidays. Once your child is in the reading habit, we would love for them to continue. Our Chatterbooks reading group for five- to 12-year-olds begins again in September on the last Saturday of the month (10am to 11am). It is free to attend and you can just turn up. You can also join us for the grand reopening of Wanstead Library on Saturday 15 July (10am to 3pm). There will be plenty of fun-filled activities, such as face painting, crafts, a bookthemed magic show and balloons. The 2017 Summer Reading Challenge will run in Redbridge Libraries from 15 July to 9 September (participation is free). A launch event will take place at Wanstead Library on 15 July from 2pm to 3pm. professor of jazz Simon Purcell is one of Britain’s most accomplished contemporary jazz pianists. Ahead of a performance at The Larder, the jazz professor, Wanstead resident and volleyball player answers our questions

S

imon Purcell is currently Head of Jazz at Trinity-Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is also a member of the Pop and Jazz Steering Group for the Association of European Conservatoires. Since the mid-1980s, Simon has performed both as leader and sideman, appearing with, amongst others, Red Rodney, Kenny Wheeler and Julian Arguelles. How did you become involved with music? I come from a musical family. My father performed with London orchestras and my grandfather, clarinettist Paddy Purcell, was a member of Henry Wood’s orchestra during the 1920s. I was originally a French horn player. When did jazz take prominence? In my teens, I fumbled through boogiewoogie and various attempts at jazz as relief from hours of long notes on the French horn, and by the time I left Trinity College of Music in 1980, I was dividing my time between classical music and jazz. Tell us about Jazz Umbrella. I founded Jazz Umbrella in 1993. It is a Londonbased jazz collective, promoting gigs at the Vortex Jazz Club and establishing a network of gigs in communities throughout the city. Are you in a band? My current band, Red Circle, features Julian Siegel, Chris Batchelor, Steve Watts and Gene Calderazzo. Our second album for Whirlwind Recordings comes out in 2018. Who or what inspires you? My students, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, John Taylor, Bill Evans and all sorts of musicians. Also, CG Jung, German expressionist art (Klee et al), relationships, mysticism and social justice.

You have mentored several generations of jazz musicians. What gives you greatest pleasure: creating music or teaching it? Both equally. This is a blessing and a curse, but mainly a blessing! What’s your favourite and least favourite aspect of Wanstead life? The trees in Grosvenor Road are beautiful and the green space in general. Living close to the High Street is great. My least favourite: house prices, rents and the fact that you need a lot of money to live here! Tell us about your interest in volleyball. Very long story, but in short, a student bass player at the East London Jazz project let slip that he had played volleyball for Australia. A year later, we started a social volleyball club in Stratford. Within a year, we (five or six jazz musicians plus a couple of waifs and strays) were winning matches and later, several tournaments. It was a hell of a journey, almost Roy of the Rovers stuff! The coach loved working with musicians as we were keen on repetition and practice! It was one of the best things I have ever done. Simon will be performing at The Larder, 39 High Street, Wanstead on 13 July from 7pm (tickets: £6). Visit wavidi.co/purcell

Believe, in the law… Pranav Bhanot – a solicitor in the civil litigation department of local solicitors Wiseman Lee – explores how the law interprets and acts upon religious, political and philosophical beliefs

W

The Equalities Act of 2010 enshrined the principle that discrimination against or harassment of an employee because of certain protected characteristics is unlawful. The protected characteristics are generally well known and include discrimination on the grounds of race, sex, age and disability for example, and though political affiliations are not specifically referred to, the Act does deal with the question of “beliefs”, which are held to include any religious or philosophical belief. In the case of Grainger Plc & Ors vs Nicholson (2009), a judge in the Employment Appeal Tribunal concluded that there must be some limit placed upon the definition of “philosophical belief” for the purpose of employment law, and ruled as follows: zz The belief must be genuinely held. zz It must be a belief rather than an opinion or viewpoint based on the present state of information available. zz It must be a belief as to a substantial aspect of human life and behaviour. zz It must attain a certain level of cogency, seriousness, cohesion and importance. zz It must not be incompatible with human dignity and not conflict with the fundamental rights of others.

© Jerry Kiesewetter

hatever your political views, a general election tends to highlight the divisions in society. When a national newspaper devotes no fewer than 13 pages of its pre-election edition to attacking a party they don’t support, it begs the question of whether an employer could sack an employee because of their political beliefs. In his summation, the judge held that while support of a political party does not of itself amount to a philosophical belief, a belief in a political philosophy or doctrine, such as Socialism or free-market Capitalism might qualify. Referring back to an important human rights case from 1982, he also suggested that a political belief can be protected and classed as a philosophical belief, but only if it was “worthy of respect in a democratic society”. The significance of that phrase was that the courts, including the Employment Tribunal, have been required to rule on the respectability of the views held or expressed. So, a belief in climate change by an employee of the BBC was held to be a protected belief, whereas support for the British National Party, on the other hand, was not protected. While the more mainstream views of today’s political parties may enjoy the protection of the Equalities Act, the law will not step in to protect employees who seek to spread discord and anarchy in the workplace. This is an area of law that is constantly evolving as society’s views on what is acceptable are adopted by the judiciary. Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead – call 020 8215 1000

Crime & assessment In the time that PCSO Alan Winston has worked in Wanstead he has inevitably seen most types of crime. But what are the most common crimes in Wanstead, and how can you keep yourself safe?

I

n comparison to other parts of London, and even Redbridge, I consider Wanstead to be a safe place to live. The most common crime in the Wanstead ward is theft from motor vehicles. Items that are stolen include number plates, builders’ tools and items left on display inside. These crimes are committed by opportunists and individuals are generally not targeted. Car parts are also a target, such as wing mirror glass, wheel trims and catalytic converters. Firstly, please email the team for some free anti-tamper screws for your number plates. Also, consider glass etching for the mirrors, property marking kits for expensive car parts and a cage over your catalytic converter. With builders’ tools, take the time to register serial numbers, fit cages to the inside of your van and tag valuable tools. Primarily, double check the vehicle is locked before you leave it. The theft of motor vehicles themselves does occur here occasionally. We have specifically identified an increase in keyless entry thefts. White vans, high-value saloon cars and popular smaller urban cars are the most targeted. If you can, park your vehicle in a garage or on a driveway with a locking post. Having vans liveried also helps. Trackers can help to locate vehicles, but ideally, we want to prevent the theft in the first place. CCTV is a good deterrent, but remember it may be subject to the Data Protection Act, so keep cameras facing your land only. Burglary is on the decline in the ward and becoming more sporadic. Homes with low side gates and perimeter fences are most at risk as criminals have more time when entering from the back garden. And remember to be extra vigilant during any renovations on your home, when security

can be weaker. We are issuing more property marking kits to Wanstead homes, which we anticipate will reduce burglary further. We are also happy to carry out security surveys. We do, unfortunately, have robberies in Wanstead, which come and go in waves, and are in similar locations each time. This means we can focus efforts on those areas and implement measures to help, by working with the council to upgrade lighting, for example. Mobile phones are also a focus for thieves and are snatched by a suspect on a bike while the victim is using it. Be aware of your environment when on your phone, and please register your IMEI numbers on immobile.com (dial *#06# to retrieve your IMEI number). I believe that the best crime prevention in Wanstead is the community itself, with neighbours looking out for one another. Neighbourhood Watch and Online Watch Link (OWL) are both great schemes. To contact the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team, call 020 8721 2796 or email wanstead.snt@met.police.uk. For more information on Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch and OWL, visit redbridgenhw.info

Thought for food In the second of a series of articles, Wanstead resident Roz Kara, founder of the Elated Eating campaign, explains the many benefits of eating local, seasonal food

T

here are a number of good reasons to eat more local, seasonal food: to reduce the energy and associated carbon dioxide emissions needed to grow and transport the food we eat; to avoid paying a premium for food that is scarcer or has travelled a long way; to support the local economy; to reconnect with nature’s cycles and the passing of time; but, most importantly, because seasonal food is fresher and so tends to be tastier and more nutritious. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy seasonal vegetables and fruits. Whatever you choose to eat, make sure it is good for you and the environment and, wherever possible, look for food that has not travelled far. I was born in New Zealand and spent many years buying New Zealand lamb for my family because I felt safe knowing where it came from. Once I realised how damaging that choice was to the environment and ultimately to my children in the future, I made a conscious decision to stop my birthplace allegiance and buy seasonal, British lamb from a known source locally in London. If you can find a great butcher who can tell you the source of the animal and its lifespan, you can be sure they are supplying good quality, seasonal and locally sourced meat. It may cost slightly more today, but you can trade off eating better quality meat less often than supermarket cuts and feeling better about your choices with the knowledge that it will cost the environment less in the long run. However, if you are a vegetarian, pescatarian or even a flexitarian, a balanced diet can come from a range of different sources, including pulses, soya products, free range eggs and dairy products and nuts and seeds. All of

Artichokes are in season

these items can now be found in Wanstead on the High Street or from the monthly farmers’ markets in the area. People often ask me about vitamins and minerals they think they may be missing out on if they don’t eat meat. Here is a guide to the most popular questions: zz Iron and zinc are found in leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, pulses, fruits, dried fruit, eggs and dairy products. Flour, other than wholemeal, is fortified by law with calcium and iron, and many other products, like breakfast cereals, are voluntarily fortified by the manufacturer. zz Vitamin B12 is present in many fortified foods like soya milk, yeast extract and cereals. It is also found in eggs and dairy products. zz Vitamin D is obtained from eggs, fortified margarines, breakfast cereals and soya milk and, importantly, from sunlight on the skin. zz Essential fats or ‘omegas’ are found in nuts as well as omega-3 enriched eggs. see for Yourself Wanstead resident Teresa Farnham is the local area organiser for the National Garden Scheme, which encourages people across the country to open their gardens and welcome in the public for charity

W

ell, it is that time of year again when, as soon as the sun comes out, gardeners can’t keep up with the sudden growth. So, it is nice to take a break and go and visit an open National Garden Scheme (NGS) garden. It is always worth chatting to the garden owners as they are usually a mine of information about their favourite garden plants. If there is a plant you have been unlucky with and see it growing beautifully in someone else’s garden, there is a good reason why you are unsuccessful. Sometimes, it is the wrong planting situation. Or something quite simple, such as acidic needle drop from a nearby conifer, being too near a lavender or rosemary bush (oil residue), or you have planted it too deeply or overwatered. More plants are killed by kindness, such as overwatering, than through anything else. There is never enough time to do what we want in a garden, so my May Day bank holiday opening for the NGS gave me an impetus to make more room for entertaining (not easy in a 15-foot square plot). We managed to squeeze in 50 visitors, who raised the magnificent total of £355 in four hours! Hopefully, we can surpass the overall total for London gardens last year (£190,000) in this, our 90th year of opening NGS gardens. It never ceases to amaze me how the NGS town gardens can differ in their content. Brodie Road, Chingford (open 20 August) manage to grow roses in pots and provide a riot of colour in their garden; Pettits Boulevard, Rise Park off the A12 (open 8 July) utilises agricultural implements in the garden and has a wonderful mini museum with old milk bottles, bottle tops and tractors! A new NGS garden in Maida Way, Chingford (open

Helen Auty at work in her garden (46 Cheyne Avenue, South Woodford)

2 July) has the most exotic koi, and not only is the garden at Latimer Road, Forest Gate (open 22 and 23 July) a feast for the eyes, but gardener Janet propagates plants on her allotment and sells them on open days to boost NGS funds. Goldhaze Close in Woodford Green (open 30 July) is the sort of garden you can meander through before eating the wonderful cakes. Harold Road, Leytonstone (open 30 July) is a large, pretty corner garden in relaxed English style, showing how to have fruit and fragrance, even in shade. Cheyne Avenue, South Woodford (open 6 August) has beehives with honey for sale. And last, but not least, St John’s Road, Walthamstow (open 6 and 13 August) is described by its owner as a “haven of quietude”. You really have to visit and find out for yourselves, and then you can go home – full of sumptuous cakes and tea – with new plants and replicate the ideas you have seen. For more information on the gardens open locally this year, pick up the NGS London guidebook from a local library, or visit ngs.org.uk. To contact Teresa, email farnhamz@yahoo.co.uk

The Battle of Passchendaele in northern Belgium (31 July to 10 November 1917) was one of the bloodiest of the First World War. To mark the centenary, Nick Dobson will be exploring Great War poets and artists at Wanstead Library this month

I

This article is only availab

n July 1918 Wilfred Owen wrote a preface for the book of poetry he was planning to publish: “Above all I am not concerned with poetry. My subject is war, and the pity of war. The poetry is in the pity.” None of the soldier poets and soldier artists who experienced the Western Front at first hand could help but be moved by the pity of war. The horror is the overriding theme of their work. For some, war presented them with a subject for their greatest work. The poetry of Siegfried Sassoon, for example, never reached such heights of passion in either his pre-war or post-war poems. For many, the Great War affected more than just their work. Some never returned from the conflict, such as the poet and artist Isaac Rosenberg, the British female artist Nina Baird – who died of typhoid on active service in North Africa – the poet Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen himself, who was killed in action just one week before the bells rang out to celebrate the Armistice.

Others lived with both the physical and mental scars inflicted during the war and some couldn’t cope. The poet and composer Ivor Gurney spent most of the rest of his life in mental institutions until his death in 1937 aged just 47. The great British surrealist painter Paul Nash struggled with bouts of depression due to his experiences. Even those lightly touched by war could never forget the horror or block out the nightmares. Examples include the poet Edmund Blunden, who served as an officer in France from August 1915 until the end without a scratch, and the great American artist John Singer Sargent, who was briefly commissioned as an official war artist. All were concerned with the pity of war. Nick’s presentation will take place at Wanstead Library on 25 July from 6.30pm to 8pm (tickets: £3). For more information, call 020 8708 2409

Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

ble in the printed edition

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! — An ecstasy of fumbling Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time, But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime. — Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, — My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est, Pro patria mori.

Passchendaele Centenary 2017 The Third Battle of Ypres Passchendaele is known as one of the muddiest and bloodiest battles of the First World War. It was fought from 31 July to 6 November 1917 in the West Flanders region of northern Belgium. It is remembered as one of the harshest battles of the war, with heavy rain contributing to the Allies gaining only five miles of ground in three months. About 325,000 Allied troops and 260,000 Germans died in the battle. Poet Siegfried Sassoon described the muddy fields as “hell”. Come mark the commencement of Passchendaele at one of our events. The Poetry is in the Pity The poems of the First World War have done more than any history when it comes to revealing the horrors of trench warfare. The work of the soldier artists and the official war artists is less well known. We will look at some of the Great War poets and artists in this talk which is illustrated with slides and readings

First World War Centenary Pop-up Library The pop-up library will feature a small exhibition, information on local experiences of the First World War and a collection of related library materials. Paul Conway will be available with his amazing collection of 3D stereographics and original photos of the First World War. Nick Dobson will present “I Died in Hell - they called it Passchendaele”, a talk which looks at the horrors of the battle using the words of those who suffered the blood and the mud. There will also be themed craft activities for children.

This Was a Man John Knowles, the editor of the only known magazine about Noël Coward, will be discussing the life and works of the flamboyant playwright at this month’s meeting of the Wanstead Park Women’s Club

I

started life in 1944 in Walthamstow near the Bell Corner, where the route to commercial London crosses the road to the theatreland of the West End. A lifetime love of music and performance began for me as a choirboy at St Mary’s Church, then on to membership of a local rock band, The Spartans, appearing in the 1960s on the same bill as The Rolling Stones, The Hollies and others. Performance became a major feature of our family. My nephew, David Hunter, is currently playing the lead of Charlie in the West End production of Kinky Boots. At 19, I moved to Norwich to train as a teacher, spending half a lifetime in education, with the passion for performance kept alive through amateur drama and playing in local bands. At the age of 20, I discovered the great performer and writer Noël Coward; that led to writing about him and later, helping start an international Noël Coward Society. In 1994 I retired from education after three school headships and a role as an advisor. I started working as a consultant to the Noël Coward estate, eventually becoming a trustee of the Noël Coward Foundation, granting funds that offer theatre and drama opportunities to young people. During this time, I have been lucky enough to meet countless theatre performers and those who work backstage, and seen some of the finest of British and American theatre. In 2000 I started Walthamstow Memories, a website to record the history of Walthamstow through the memories of its residents (walthamstowmemories.net), now managed by Daniel Quinn, an Italian whose grandparents lived in Walthamstow during the 1900s.

John’s band The Spartans appearing at The Lyceum in the 1960s

A lot of my time is currently spent working for the new Noël Coward Archive Trust that is preserving artefacts from every aspect of Coward’s life and work. Recent projects include the editing of archive home movies shot by Coward of his travels in South America and the Far East, and previously unknown audio recordings of his work. Since 2001 I have edited and produced the only known magazine about Noël Coward entitled Home Chat, named after one of his early plays. It appears three times a year. I have enjoyed working with Coward scholars, performers and other colleagues in America and the UK to provide news and views on archive and current activity. This year, I visited Coward’s past home in Kent, Goldenhurst Manor, now lovingly restored by its new owner, comedian and novelist Julian Clary. John’s talk will take place on 10 July from 8pm at Aldersbrook Bowls Club (visitors: £2; booking required). Call 020 8532 9093 For more information on Noël Coward, visit noelcoward.net

Too good to be true Steve Wilks, chairman of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhood Panel, examines the increasing problem of investment fraud on the vulnerable and elderly and looks at ways to minimise it

I

nvesting safely and profitably is one of the most important things you can do to make life more comfortable. However, what you may not be aware of are the criminals dedicated to pursuing and persuading people like you to invest in schemes that, on the surface, appear to be great opportunities but in reality are nothing but fraudulent scams that will result in a loss. It is important to be able to recognise the signs of a scam. Usually, you are contacted out of the blue with the investment offer, shown glossy brochures, professional-looking websites and certificates that make them look authentic, and then you are pressured into making rushed decisions with no time to consider the nature of the investment. Any decision involving considerable sums of money should have a cooling down period prior to full acceptance. These scams often involve being called by a professionalsounding broker, who offers you investment opportunities with incredible potential for making a profit. They usually offer to sell you shares or bonds, but may also offer other investments, such as precious metals, diamonds, wine, art or energy. Scammers will often hire prestigious city offices, known as boiler rooms, to make their enterprise look legitimate. In reality, the fraudsters are cold calling as many people as possible to pay for bogus investments. Once the fraudsters have made you invest as much money as possible, they quickly disappear. The resources they offer do not exist or they have not told you that your investment is worthless. For example, they will sell land that has no potential for development or rare stones that are not worth as much as they sound. You may be told to

keep your investment secret to ensure you receive maximum returns, but really the boiler rooms want to prevent you from telling others to avoid being spotted. There is also increasing evidence that victims are being hit a second time by fraudulent ‘recovery rooms’. Criminals will normally contact victims with an offer to help by selling on or recovering in some other way their previous investment. This is offered through a perceived small fee payable up front when it has been alleged that the investment has been recovered. This fee can range from a few hundred to thousands of pounds. This is simply another way to extract more money from a victim. The services are never provided, the initial investment is never recovered. An investment scheme promising an excessive return would, if legitimate, have to run some considerable risks. If the investment proposal is marketed as a high return, no or low risk, then a red flag should be flashing. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is. Amy’s story, Amy’s Day Wanstead Village Directory

Former Wanstead High School pupil Amy Goacher died from ovarian cancer in 2012. Since then, her dad, Bob Goacher, mum Tina and sister Megan have celebrated Amy’s life with an annual fundraising event

A

my was a bright and beautiful young woman with a promising future ahead of her when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012 at the age of 19. She was in the first year of a psychology degree course at Bournemouth University and had just returned from a holiday in Malia in Crete with her friends when she went to the doctor with what she suspected was an infection. Amy then underwent a full hysterectomy, along with an operation to remove the tumours and a series of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but the cancer continued to spread. Amy was initially reluctant to be referred to Saint Francis Hospice to be treated for lymphedema, a common side effect of chemotherapy, which causes swelling in the arms and legs. But the range of services she received helped to control her sickness and pain and also to come to terms with her illness. Amy was in a really angry stage when she first arrived at the hospice. She was angry at what the cancer was doing to us as a family and would worry how we would cope once she had gone. She was also still grieving for her childhood friend Ellie Davis, who had died of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in 2010, aged 18. Amy faced death with courage by making plans and while this was difficult for myself, Amy’s mum Tina and sister Megan, it also helped knowing we could fulfil her final wishes. Having a will written for Amy was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. In August 2012, Amy celebrated her 21st birthday with a day out in Cambridge and a BBQ with friends and family. The following

month she was admitted to the hospice, and during the three weeks she spent on the inpatient unit before she died, her family, friends and her beloved pet cockapoo Maisie were regular visitors. Amy’s story is far from over as she left a legacy that will continue well into the future. In a letter she left to be read out at her funeral, she asked us to continue raising money for the hospice and to help fund research into finding a cure for ovarian cancer. Since 2013, we have held an annual golf day in her memory, which is known as Amy’s Day and so far has raised £65,100. We have donated £26,646 to Saint Francis Hospice and we also support the work of Professor Ian McNeish – Amy’s consultant at Barts who works tirelessly to find a cure for ovarian cancer – and help fund research into SUDEP in memory of Ellie. So, following the success of previous years, our fifth annual golf and BBQ event is going to be another opportunity to celebrate Amy’s life. Amy’s Day 2017 will take place at Wanstead Golf Club on 25 August. Tee-off is at 11.15am and the BBQ starts at 7pm (golf: £30; BBQ: £20; book by 31 July). Something to say? Talking Stories is a new show recently launched on East London Radio. Here, host Tony Cranston, an award-winning author, explains the reasons behind the concept and invites you to tell your own story

“I

f you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be very intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” That quote is attributed to Albert Einstein, and it is in the same vein that I am passionate about storytelling. We live in a wonderful part of the country, where the whole world is represented by the people native to and those who have come to make their homes here. My show uses stories and poetry to reach out to our neighbours, young and old, and beyond, and by sharing the tales of our lives in our original homeland and our new lives in this country with its mix of particular ways of thinking and doing things. This is a show that is actively calling out to everyone to tell their story. Talking Stories, which goes out monthly on East London Radio and which is available as a podcast thereafter, has already featured talented authors, storytellers and poets who live in or write about east London and features interviews with major storytellers from around the world, including Ireland, USA, Singapore, China, France, Japan, Austria, India and more. Storytelling has had a great resurgence in popularity over the last 20 years, with storytelling groups springing up in towns and cities across the UK actively encouraging more people from all walks of life to learn how to tell a story, whether to their children or grandchildren or professionally in festivals and clubs around the world. Talking Stories wants to encourage storytellers, poets, writers, schools and groups to get in touch and be featured on the programme. There are no costs involved; we are here to promote your talents to a new – different – and wider audience.

As we rush headlong into this 21st, science fiction century, we need something older and connected to that which is deep within us. For 27,000 years, since the first cave drawings were discovered, telling stories has been our most fundamental communication method. It is the oldest method of communication in the world and has obvious medical benefits to the human mind. Its benefits for things like dementia and other cognitive or age-related conditions has been well documented, for when you tell or listen to a story, all areas of the brain are set in motion. There is nothing quite like storytelling for teaching children. Remember, as long as there have been people, there have been those who tell their stories, and you can be one of them. To listen to the Talking Stories shows, visit wavidi.co/talkingstories. For more information and to contact Tony, email totocranston@hotmail.com

I

was born in London and have lived on the border of South Woodford and Wanstead for more than 30 years. I often visit Wanstead High Street and Christchurch Green, and enjoy walks in Wanstead Park, which inspire some of my paintings. On leaving school, I did an art foundation course and went on to do a graphic design course specialising in illustration, gaining a Diploma in Art and Design (degree) in 1974. I still attend a life drawing class. I later worked at London Metropolitan University, making teaching aids and publicity material, as well as doing freelance illustration work. When my

children were young, I worked in pre-schools and schools, particularly enjoying doing art and craft work with the children. In recent years, I have concentrated on fine art and have had work in several commercial galleries. My subject interests are local scenes, landscapes, seascapes, trees and people. My styles range from detailed, realistic small works to larger, more impressionistic or semi-abstract pieces, usually in bright, bold colours. I use pencil, pastel and acrylic. I have recently been working on tree ideas, which will fit with the art trail’s 2017 ‘Breath of Fresh Air’ theme.

an eye on art Local artist Alison Stenhouse – who will be participating in Art Trail Wanstead 2017 this September – talks about her creative background and her love of bright and bold colours

Other than local shows, I now sell work mainly from The Llewellyn Alexander Gallery. These include miniatures – paintings of about three by five inches – and larger works in their Not The Royal Academy show, which takes place from June to August each year. I have had work in shows hosted by The Royal Society of Miniatures and The Royal Society of Marine Artists. I also belong to the Essex Art Club and take part in their shows at the Barbican Library and Wanstead House. Last year, I participated in Art Trail Wanstead and intend to do so again. It is good to see local businesses supporting artists, and good to see local people participating in workshops.

Currently, I have work on display downstairs at The Manor House on the High Street: four paintings of semi-abstract trees representing the four seasons. I also have some still life work at the More Italy café. My work can also be seen on The Llewellyn Alexander website (lafp.co.uk; a million brushstrokes section). Art Trail Wanstead will take place from 9 to 24 September – visit wavidi.co/atw17. For more information on Alison’s work, email alison_stenhouse@btinternet.com

20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the seventh of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding wonders if our shopping habits might be going back to the future

I

But does this demonstrate a move away from the ‘big weekly shop’ towards more traditional ways of buying our goods? I think so. We are lucky to have four bakeries, a fruit and veg shop, a fishmonger, a butcher, a local pharmacy and vintners. Granted, not all of them are independents, but nearly all of our cafes and restaurants are, some winning wide acclaim. My point is reflected in my own shopping habits. I make a conscious effort to shop in the High Street and support our local traders. My parents’ generation invented the big shop in the out-of-town store, which is in decline. So, maybe those in their 20s to 40s are beginning to use the High Street in the same way that those in their 80s and 90s were used to. Well, yes and no is the answer. Wanstead will have at least 10 places dedicated to coffee and snacks, five estate agents and a wide variety of restaurants. In 1920 Wanstead had one estate agent, and the only place you could buy a meal was in The George or Eagle pubs, which doubled as hotels. This generation of Wanstead folk is defined as much by its habits of cooking good food at home as eating good food out of it.

© Geoff Wilkinson

f, like me, you were pleased to hear that Gail’s Bakery has plans to take over the old Barclays bank site, then maybe your shopping habits are more like your grandparents than you think. It’s great to see a building that has been unused providing employment, paying its taxes and providing a service for Wanstead. With M&S set to open and Superdrug rumoured to have taken over the old Londis and HSBC sites, the future for the High Street looks bright. Our shopping habits are changing, with more emphasis on good quality products, and our banking is moving online. But we risk putting all our eggs in one basket unless we have a High Street that diversifies. Independent retailers like The Closet closed, and we still need to support the non-food and drink-centric shops to have a truly vibrant High Street. It’s not easy to change the way we shop; the superstores offer one-stop convenience and often very low prices. The council could, and should, do more to support our traders through lower taxes, a better public realm and parking policies that have been thought through. However, we all have a part to play, and my guess is the future for our High Street is bright – we just need to keep it that way. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation that works to protect, preserve and improve the local area. Membership is £10 per household per year. Visit wansteadsociety.org.uk
