Welcome... Regardless of how you voted on 23 June – assuming, of course, that you were one of the 128,423 who did so in Redbridge – we all now owe it to ourselves and to the generations that will follow us to make the most of the decision to leave the European Union. That’s not to imply support or otherwise for the result, rather to encourage support for the democratic process that the result represents. Your local MP may not have been the candidate you voted for in 2015, but they are still your MP and obliged to represent you every bit as much as their most zealous supporters. Similarly, even if you voted to remain in the EU, as a nation we are now all represented by the decision to come out and there now needs to be some level of unity going forwards. EU discussions have divided political parties, communities and households. As a community publication that’s not something we could overlook and I am proud that we were able to mark this historic debate in our own small way by publishing some of the varying viewpoints of local people in previous issues. But as a community publication I am even more interested in highlighting those aspects of our society which bring together and unite individuals. So as we leave the intricacies of Brexit to one side, I am pleased to turn my attention away from the stars of the EU and focus on the stars of E11. With the return of a festival that has a track record of bringing neighbours together (see page 26), local residents can now continue to sing and dance as one, even if they didn’t vote as one. Because when individuals sing together they become a band, but when neighbours sing together they become Lee Marquis, Editor a community.

Friends of Wanstead Parklands achieves charity status The Friends of Wanstead Parklands – which seeks to raise awareness of the history and ecology of Wanstead Park – have fulfilled a longstanding ambition by becoming a registered charity. “It has been a long process, but it is a timely affirmation of our charitable purpose – to promote the regeneration of Wanstead Park,” said the group’s chairman John Meehan. “The granting of charitable status gives a real boost to our efforts to see the park benefit from the investment that other parks like Hampstead Heath… have enjoyed in recent years.”

Family members have invited anyone wishing to pay their respects to Basant Lal Sharma – who was killed in a road traffic accident on the High Street on 31 May – to leave a message online. Mr Sharma, 91, who moved to Wanstead after retirement, leaves behind five children, 16 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Tributes have been paid to Parmeet Singh, a former member of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Rotary Club, who passed away whilst on holiday. “Parmeet will be sadly missed and all the members of his club send their sincere condolences to his widow, Hema, and all the family,” said David Etherton from the Woodford Green Rotary Club, to which many members transferred following the closure of the Wanstead Club last year.

Outdoor theatre returns to Wanstead Park this summer

Wanstead Park’s theatre season gets underway this month with two open-air performances. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (14 July; 7pm) and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore (24 July; 3pm) will both be performed by touring theatre group Illyria in the park’s Temple enclosure. Hot and cold refreshments will be available on site and picnics are also welcome. Illyria was created in 1991 and has delighted audiences across the UK as well as in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. Call 020 7332 1911

Wanstead gallery Images in Frames will be launching wishFEST – a 10-day art festival – on 7 July. “In true festival style there will be music, fun and exclusive art releases by a cacophony of artists,” said gallery manager Michele Redgrave. Historian to explore memories of Epping Forest

At this month’s meeting of the East of London Family History Society local historian Georgina Green will be discussing her book Keepers, Cockneys and Kitchen Maids, which was published in 1987 and documents memories of Epping Forest in the early 1900s, such as that of former Snaresbrook resident Winifred Adams (born 1905), who recalled earning ‘a little money during the Great War, collecting acorns’. Work to replace ageing gas mains in Blake Hall Road, Wanstead recommenced last month. The project, which is scheduled to last for 20 weeks, also involves replacing service pipes to some properties. “To minimise the traffic disruption we’ll be inserting the new pipes into the old mains wherever possible, which reduces the need for digging,” said engineer Paul Illingworth. “We’ve also planned our work at the busy Overton Road junction for the school summer holidays, when roads are generally quieter.” Visit bettergaspipes.co.uk

Following five years of training and auditing, Redbridge’s health services and children’s centres have received a Baby Friendly Award from UNICEF. The initiative recognises the need to change focus to not only supporting breastfeeding but also to improving emotional outcomes for all children, including those who are fed on formula milk. Redbridge offers 12 baby feeding cafes and six antenatal breastfeeding workshops.

Redbridge residents have helped to rehome more than 2,000kg of books, toys and homeware since October 2014, thanks to a series of Give and Take events, where items are donated or swapped. “Before you throw something out, think whether it may be of use to someone else and check when the next [event] is so you can take part,” said Councillor John Howard. The next Give and Take event will be at Redbridge Central Library on 16 September.

Addison Road in Wanstead was one of many across Redbridge that were closed last month to allow residents to hold street parties in celebration of the Queen’s official birthday. “We had a great day celebrating the Queen’s 90th, where over 60 homes came together for lunch… The kids had a great time seeing the road without any cars, enjoying the freedom to play in the street,” said Scott Wilding. Wanstead Park will be the location for an immersive experience this month, with an audio tour featuring choreographed dance performances. The event on 10 July, which is part of the 2016 Big Dance Week, will use oral history recordings to tell the park’s story while dancers interpret moments from the soundtrack in the open spaces. Support grows for a cycle lane Local resident takes part in on the High Street international film festival

Local resident Hassan Vawda has submitted a six-minute experimental film into this year’s Walthamstow International Film Festival. “I would call it more a film/poem. It was shot in Walthamstow and Gujarat, India, the two places my grandmother has lived in – she is the old lady in the movie,” said Hassan, who is also a painter and a poet. “Art and poetry connects us to ourselves, the world and each other.” The festival, now in its seventh year, will hold screenings on 23 and 24 July at the Empire in Walthamstow. A project to find 1,000 different species of plants and animals in and around Wanstead during 2016 has achieved it’s target with six months to spare. Wanstead 1,000 – which was launched in January by the Wren Wildlife Group – recorded its 1,000th species in midJune and, following last month’s bio-blitz weekend in Wanstead Park and on Wanstead Flats, the count had reached 1,067 at the time of going to press. “Are we giving up now then? A charity that combines getting fit with volunteering will be launching in Wanstead on 25 July. Flipping ART Local artist Naomi Fenton Rayman – who will be participating in this year’s Art Trail Wanstead – has taken inspiration from her past work as a textile designer by flipping and repeating her paintings

ehay, as mentioned in my rewording of the classic song Changes by David Bowie – another legend who passed away earlier this year – this song is the title of this year’s Art Trail Wanstead, which I have been fortunate enough to have exhibited in since its birth in 2010. The paintings I refer to are Beach Flipped Flopped, where I used a large canvas that I divided in two, painted half and then flipped the image, joining them together to create the final painting. I used to be a

textile designer of printed fabric and had to think in repeat ideas, so the idea came from there. My beach and sea topics still flow and I adore doing them. One of my new images is at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in Waterloo. The exhibition is called Not The Royal Academy and runs until 20 August. Some beach paintings are also on show in the restaurants at the beaches they were based upon. Oh, what a shame I still have to make many journeys to the sea for reference!

I am continuing too with my strange faces theme, and for my latest one called Meshigaim, meaning madness, I have added a structural feel – in this case, an open window based on a photo I took of Wanstead House.

During this year’s trail in September, I am looking forward to exhibiting my work at Wanstead Beauty Clinic and Kurtis Estate Agents, and anywhere else that dares have me!

If you have read about me before in this lovely local magazine, you may remember I studied at Chelsea School of Art, then worked in the textile industry for many years. I also supplemented my income as a tour operator, which helped enhance my love for beaches and for checking out new hotels.

Friday 1 July 2016 marked the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme during the First World War. Redbridge Museum Manager Gerard Greene outlines how the battle affected Wanstead

As part of the First World War centenary commemorations, Redbridge Museum has undertaken a major programme to uncover the local impacts of the war. The museum has recorded the names of at least 10 men from Wanstead who were killed on the first day of the Somme and around 28 in total for the battle. This makes the battle the worst campaign of the war in terms of Wanstead casualties. In total, there are 198 names listed on the district’s war memorial on the High Street but new research has uncovered some 360 deaths with a Wanstead connection. Three of the Wanstead men killed at the Somme are also recorded on another war memorial at the Wanstead United Reformed Church, which researched the 15 names on their memorial and – working with Redbridge Museum and supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund – created an exhibition and booklet called Our 15: Remembered Lives. One of the men featured was Arthur Blogg. Born in Wanstead on 7 January 1891, his family lived at several addresses in the local area, including Nightingale Lane, Cowley Road and Wellesley Road. This, coupled with the fact that Arthur’s father had several jobs, including a baker and a carpenter at Joliffe’s Builders, suggest the family had difficult financial circumstances. In 1915 Arthur enlisted in the army and by October 1916 was serving at the Somme. On 6 October, despite no attacks by either side, Arthur and two others were killed in what official communiques often called ‘normal wastage’. Arthur was 25 and had

he first day of the battle was the bloodiest in the history of the British Army, with 19,240 killed and 38,500 casualties. The campaign lasted until 18 November 1916 and led to a horrendous loss of life on all sides.

survived six months on the Western Front. Like many of the bereaved, his widow Kate never remarried, despite living to be 90 years old. Another man listed on the church’s memorial, Philip Rathbone, was the son of a police sergeant and grew up at 16 Chaucer Road. Philip was 18 when war broke out and he soon volunteered. He was injured at the Somme and died of his wounds on 19 November 1916. Philip’s father wrote a moving letter to the church: “My wife and I tender our most heartfelt thanks to the members of the Congregational Church for their kind message of sympathy in our time of sorrow. It is indeed a source of great pleasure to us to know that our dear boy was loved… by so many.” These are just two examples of the harrowing loss felt by local people in Wanstead during the war, which continues to resonate today. The last dance Saturday 16 July will be the 17th and final Music in Wanstead Park. Organiser Gill James encourages us all to join the last dance and to help continue the festival’s legacy in new ways

o join in our celebration this month of 17 years of local music-making and fun in Wanstead Park. Enjoy watching the marvellously exotic London School of Samba parade and then join in our own pied piper samba procession, with a little help from the drumming, hat and maraca workshops. Old favourites such as Spider Mountain, Snakey Sue and Mr Alexander’s Travelling Show rub shoulders with new attractions like the vintage London films to be seen in the Kinovan. Music will include contributions from both pupils and teachers at the brilliant music department of Wanstead High School, a Mexican mariachi band and professional nine-piece klezmer rock band The Kippers. Dance band Grooveability will be the resounding climax to our evening in the Temple Garden. Music in Wanstead Park has been organised each year by the Aldersbrook Families Association (AFA), a local group that aims to bring the community together through cultural and social events. Tickets and bar sales have provided the main source of funding to put on this festival each year, which costs about £17,000 to run. Redbridge Vision has helped us this year with a grant of £1,000. We have always aimed to support contributing local groups and charities and any profit we have made is fed back into the community. The Music in Wanstead Park committee has decided not to hold such a large event in the future. Costs are rising and it is more difficult in the present climate to run a truly community event on this scale. However, the AFA still plan to continue to support local music and musicians and to use this amazing location in Wanstead Park to promote smaller musical and cultural events.

The Corporation of London, who own and manage the Temple and surrounding parklands, has allowed us free use of this historic and beautiful site for 17 years. Times move on and the Temple is now open for free to the public at weekends and is also available to hire for functions, such as weddings and private parties. We hope to be able to contribute in the future to this growing vibrant cultural scene on our doorstep. The event has only been made possible due to the goodwill, support and commitment of a wide range of volunteers, supporters and contributors and a huge thank you goes out to them all. So, if you have enjoyed Music in Wanstead Park over the years and are interested in being part of organising smaller events in the future, or have any ideas for such events, please do get in touch. Humanists at Westminster Baroness Thornton – a member of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group – will be the guest speaker at a meeting of the East London Humanists in Wanstead this month. Paul Kaufman reports

aroness Thornton is a prominent advocate on Humanist issues in the House of Lords and will be sharing her thoughts and experience on some of the challenges presented by the current government. Glenys Thornton has a wealth of experience battling for social justice both in and outside Parliament. She entered the House of Lords in 1998 and since then has held various positions, including Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Home Office), Shadow Spokesperson on Health and Shadow Spokesperson on Equalities and Women’s Issues. Humanists have no party political affiliation and the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group has over a hundred members who come from all parties. This is a fair reflection of the fact that Humanists – those with ethical non-religious beliefs – comprise the second or third largest belief group in this country. The challenges presented by the current government will therefore be of concern to many of us here in Wanstead, irrespective of where we are on the partypolitical spectrum. One issue is the question of faith schools. There are many, both religious and nonreligious, who share the concern that dividing children at the school gate based on their parents’ religion is not conducive to social harmony. There are legitimate fears that the proposed push towards academisation will result in more such schools being created and serve to increase division based on faith. One of the ongoing battles in the House of Lords has been against the proposed ban on organisations, such as the British Humanist Association (BHA), challenging unlawful school admissions policies. Education minister Nicki Morgan, who is pushing for the ban,

claims such challenges are ‘vexatious.’ In fact, 87% of the challenges have been upheld. Violations uncovered by the BHA include faith schools directly discriminating on grounds of race and gender, failing to prioritise children in care and asking unlawful questions about family backgrounds. A second issue, which again reflects the conservative religious nature of the present government, is their refusal to permit Humanist marriages in England. Every recognised religion has the right to conduct a marriage service in this country. This includes, for example, Scientologists and the Aetharius Society, which was founded in the 1950s on a belief in UFOs and extraterrestrial visitors! Yet the government continues to block attempts to allow Humanist marriages, a right enjoyed in Scotland since 2005. Baroness Thornton raised the issue again in the Lords in May and was again rebuffed by a government spokesman. Baroness Thornton will be speaking at Wanstead Library on 25 July from 7.30pm. 1067 ...and counting Members of the Wren Wildlife Group have been hoping to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. Chair Tim Harris reports on hitting four figures with six months to go

Close to the underpass beneath the Green Man Roundabout – an unprepossessing patch of land if ever there was one – there was a bigger surprise. Half hidden in the long grass were 10 absolutely pristine, beautiful bee orchids. These had been found by Paul Ferris about three years ago but nobody has reported seeing them since. Who would have thought that the top end of Leytonstone High Road would provide suitable conditions for orchids to grow? A few days later I stumbled across a few more of these plants on the other side of Wanstead Park, in the Exchange Lands, which lie between the Empress Avenue allotments and the River Roding. Nearby, one of our scarcest local butterflies – a brown argus – was nectaring. It was not a fantastic month for butterflies because so many days were dull and wet. Common blues were seen in the Exchange Lands and on Wanstead Flats, and during the third week of June both large and small skippers emerged. While many of the spring species have now

ith June’s regular – most would say, too regular – downpours, the explosion of plant and insect life in our area was even more impressive than usual. When a group of us visited the meadow north of Bush Road in midJune, we didn’t know what we’d find but were pretty confident there would be surprises. The first of these was just how lovely this little area of grassland looked, the 50 shades of green enlivened by a pinkish wash of sheep’s sorrel in places. Closer examination revealed patches of the tiny white flowers of heath bedstraw, purple cascades of tufted vetch (which is becoming more common in the area), the occasional bright magenta of grass vetchling and bright yellow beaked hawk’sbeard.

disappeared from the scene, we should expect to see Essex skipper, purple hairstreak, meadow brown and gatekeeper later in the summer, along with second generations of some of our early species. There were too many rainy nights for it to be a classic spring for moths, but a trapping session in the City of London Cemetery did produce a delightful species called the green silver-lines. Cemetery staff have noted an impressive number of hedgehogs; this site really is the centre of our local ‘hog’ population. At the start of the year a target of 1,000 species seemed almost too large to contemplate, and I was wondering whether we’d be desperately striving for the target in late December. I needn’t have worried; in fact, June’s finds – at the time of going to press – brought the total score to 1,067 (+220*), made up of 353 plants (+43*), 539 invertebrates (+172*), 116 birds (+1*), 35 fungi (+1*) and 24 miscellaneous (+3*). *Change from May's count.

t took just three working parties for the Wanstead Community Gardeners to produce a new herbaceous border for Wanstead. After some serious digging and weed removal, this strip along the service road to the Grove Park car park has been planted with donated plants. We made a start on Sunday 12 June, sharing the rain with the many street parties celebrating the Queen’s birthday. We’ll now keep a sharp lookout for emerging weeds but hopefully, the newly planted stock will settle and cover the soil so weed seeds won’t germinate. In a little while, this strip will be looking like a long thin version of the Corner

House garden, with lots of old-fashioned, hardy plants. If you enjoy gardening yourself and are looking for a way to become more involved in the community, then you could do a lot worse than joining our growing team. For starters, it’s fun! We get together and work outside for a few hours, planting and chatting. It also provides a way for you to make a positive, visible mark on your own community – an impact you can see each and every day. Some of our other work has included: the High Street flower beds; daffodil and primrose planting in Wanstead Place; shrub planting around Wanstead Station; the two beds round the Victorian drinking fountain by the corner of George Green; and the Wall Garden (that little patch on top of a wall by Snaresbrook railway bridge). The seeds for our community gardening were sown in 2003, when a few residents set out to deal with the Corner House garden, which, at that time, had become

filled with waist-high weeds and rubbish. Under the auspices of the Wanstead Society, the council was asked if this sad patch of land could be adopted as an honorary Wanstead flower bed. It soon became the cottage garden that is now such a feature of Wanstead â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it would be hard to imagine the High Street without it. The Wanstead Community Gardeners came into being in April 2014, when we decided to tackle the many patches of neglected beds around Wanstead Station. We have recently adopted some new patches of land and have exciting plans for these, with plenty of chances for you to get involved! ÂŠ Geoff Wilkinson

y name is Melissa Fletcher and I have just started running Mum2mum nearly new markets in Wanstead. These are table-top sales where parents (and indeed all relations) in the community can sell their pre-loved goodquality baby and children’s items to other local parents. Starting Mum2mum was a bit of a career change for me, and I was mainly motivated to do so after starting my own family. I had moved to London from Glasgow to carry out a PhD and, after settling in Loughton with my husband and daughter, I decided I wanted to do something that was more directly applicable to my current stage of life (and I could fit in around being a mummy). I saw Mum2mum featured on Dragon’s Den earlier this year and that encouraged me to unleash my inner event organiser and take the plunge. I liked that the Mum2mum idea was very simple and the premise easy to understand. Having had my first child in 2014, I could fully appreciate how expensive children could be and how things you bought could very rapidly become redundant. The business opportunity was a great way of allowing people to buy clothes, toys and books from others in their community at lower prices than those in the shops, whilst providing our children with all the things they need (and want). Don’t worry if you haven’t sold anything before. We give our sellers lots of tips to help them get the pricing and presentation right to maximise their sales on the day. Mum2mum markets are more than just nearly new sales – they are community events that are fun for all the family. Rather than just being a shopping experience,

they also feature a select number of local businesses that allow our buyers to see what else is available for their children in the local area. The first 100 buyers at our sales also receive a goody bag, the contents of which changes for each event. I sometimes also have a photographer on hand to take mini photoshoots. Refreshments are available, so you can purchase a cup of tea or coffee and cake while catching up with other like-minded parents, and the kids can amuse themselves in the activity area. Bereavement Café A group of local churches have established a new drop-in Bereavement Café where anyone can go to talk about their loss. Fr Martyn Hawkes offers some insight into how the monthly meetings can help

hurches are regularly involved with loss and bereavement. Although there are an increasing number of ways in which to arrange religious and non-religious services to mark a death, most people still look to mainline Christian churches to provide a minister for the funeral of their loved one. In doing so, they can expect care and support in the days leading up to the funeral and also, if they wish, some ongoing help with the long journey of grief. Grief doesn’t end with the funeral, but that is the point at which the level of community and social support we get from those around us can sometimes begin to lessen. As life for people around us returns to some sort of normality, it can be hardest for those experiencing the grief most profoundly to continue to process the thoughts and feelings that they continue to feel, in many different ways and at unexpected times. It can be difficult to share our thoughts and feelings with other people – they may be uncomfortable talking about such things, they may not understand the situation, or they just may not have the time to listen at length. Recognising a need to support people through this journey – which can extend not only to bereavement but any meaningful loss – a group of local churches (St Mary’s in South Woodford, St Gabriel’s in Aldersbrook and the Parish of Wanstead) have recently set up a monthly drop-in café where anyone can go to talk about what they are experiencing. It’s an opportunity to meet and share with others going through the grieving process and there are trained volunteers who can offer a sympathetic ear and point you to other sources of help.

We recognised the valuable work already in place at the Cherry Tree Café in Wanstead on the first Thursday of the month called Mourning Coffee and aimed for something complementary in terms of timing, hence we opted for the third Tuesday of the month. We also recognised the distinctive things that we as churches would hope to provide: a warm welcome to people of all faiths and none, good refreshments, compassionate listening and, for those who request it, other opportunities to receive support. So far, in our first couple of months, we have received some very positive feedback from those who have attended the café and the affirmation that what we are providing is meeting a real need in the community. We invite anyone who feels this might be of value to them to give it a try. There’s no charge, nothing to join and no need to come back a second time if you don’t want to! The next Bereavement Café will take place on 19 July in the vestry of Christ Church, Wanstead from 10.45am to 12pm. For more information, call 020 8505 3000

Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 15th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Chris Hinson explains why his first digital camera renewed his enthusiasm for photography

started taking photos on my travels as a student to cities in Europe and enjoyed capturing the modern buildings. I also visited New York and Boston and very much enjoyed seeing the skyscrapers and trying to capture them in the viewfinder. After a foundation course, I went to art college to do a furniture design degree. I didn’t really use photography to help with my designs, but I think if we were in the digital age then as we are now, then it would have been very useful. My father ran an electrical and photographic shop, which gave me the chance to experiment with black and white printing. After finishing my degree, apart from holiday photography, I went for a long time without using my camera until I needed to make a record of the furniture my company was making. It was always very disappointing when the photos came back, as the interior shots were very difficult to light properly. So it was an exciting time when we invested in one of the first digital cameras, which had a wide angle lens and just 2.3 million pixels. This renewed my enthusiasm to take photos because of the instant feedback – I could see if the lighting needed altering there and then. So began a steep learning curve! Software at the time was not very user-friendly and it was complicated to achieve a relatively simple result. I started to take many more photos and experiment. I progressed to a Nikon DSLR quite quickly and started to collect a range of lenses. About five years ago I thought I should really join a local photo club to help me learn the technical side of photo editing, and maybe set myself a challenge of entering the competitions. My interests have since become more wideranging and I am now drawn to areas such

as architecture, landscapes and seascapes, night photography and action (inspired by my two sons). As I have learnt how to use Adobe Photoshop, I now enjoy altering some shots to suit the mood or atmosphere I was attracted to at the time of taking the photo. As a member of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, I very much look forward to the interesting talks and demos that are arranged each month and the casual discussions of our different techniques and shooting styles. Seeing what other members and local clubs are exhibiting is probably the most helpful type of encouragement to keep me trying out new techniques and styles. he blackcurrant has had a similar history to the gooseberry, which I featured in last month’s article. It’s not surprising, as they come from the same Ribes family. These are Ribes Nigra, and a small family firm in Bristol used this name to give an identity to their fruit cordial first made in 1938, which they called Ribena. Because of the fruit’s high vitamin C content, Ribena was given free to children during the Second World War when oranges became hard to get. The brand is now owned by the drugs giant GlaxoSmithKline.

About 90% of all British blackcurrants find their way into the bottle, but apparently, a glass of diluted cordial typically contains only 5% of fruit juice (plus a lot of apple juice and sugar), so I’d like to tell you about the wonders of the remaining 10% of the UK blackcurrant crop. But first, let’s go back to the origins of this remarkable little powerhouse. First cultivated in Russia in the 11th century in monastery gardens, it found its way across Europe, and the first UK records date from the 16th century. The leaves were used medicinally, primarily for arthritis, respiratory problems, diarrhoea and sore throats. The berries were used to counteract infections, nerve and muscle problems, gastrointestinal, bladder, liver and cardiovascular issues. A bit of a cure-all, and that was long before scientists could work out why.

Very popular across Europe, it was introduced to America by colonists in the 18th century, but was looked upon as an inferior fruit because of its tangy flavour, and wasn’t popular with the apparently sweeter palate there. Then in the 1900s, as with the gooseberry, white pine blister rust was imported from the UK on blackcurrant bushes. Crops were wiped out across the States and spread to indigenous pine forests, threatening the logging industry. To this day, the growing of blackcurrants is still illegal in some States. Let’s revisit the health benefits of this tangy fruit. It’s long been known that the very high vitamin C content improves body tissue health (skin, bone, muscle etc.), helps avoid anaemia, improves the immune system and fights colds. Scientific research finds that the flavonoids in blackcurrants improve the function of blood vessels to help avoid harmful build-up of bad cholesterol, the proanthocyanidins help prevent urinary tract infections and the anthocyanins help night vision. Furthermore, the polyphenolic component of blackcurrants can actually help improve short term memory and protect nerve cells in the brain from degeneration, so aiding brain function. So let’s get picking – or down to the greengrocers to buy that remaining 10% of the UK crop – and start making jams, pies and ice creams. This month’s recipe is a perfect match of flavours.

Speaking out! Caroline Roughley has been visiting local primary schools as part of the NSPCC ‘Speak out. Stay safe’ programme, which has helped teach over 4,500 children across Redbridge to stay safe from abuse

hildren across Redbridge have been learning about abuse in all its forms, how to stay safe and who to go to for help should they ever need it. The lessons are part of the NSPCC’s ‘Speak out. Stay safe’ programme, which is delivered by trained volunteers through an assembly and a workshop. It is essential that safeguarding messages are relayed in a lively, interactive way. By the end of the visit, children have had fun, feel empowered and can speak out and stay safe. All sessions are very carefully tailored to suit the age of the children involved. As an area coordinator for the programme in north east London, I know that at least two children in every primary school classroom will have experienced some form of abuse or neglect – a truly shocking statistic. But just imagine if we could give these children the knowledge to prevent abuse, the confidence to speak out and the courage to seek help if they need it. By visiting every school every two years, we could prevent children from experiencing abuse, one generation at a time. The service launched in 2011 after research showed the majority of children who contact ChildLine are over 11 years of age. Many said that the abuse had begun years before they picked up the phone. The programme therefore aims to reach children before abuse starts. A programme volunteer, Betty Moore, said: “Some of the things children tell us are heart-breaking, but knowing they have come forward and will receive help is the best feeling ever. More often, I drive home with tears of joy in my eyes for the way these

primary age children respond to us – they show care, empathy and an innocence which inspires me to be a better person.” Dawn Hallybone, deputy headteacher at Oakdale Junior School in South Woodford, said: “The NSPCC offer an informative service to schools. They are a trusted organisation who are able to give an insight into and help children deal with problems. Our children benefitted from their work around online safety.” None of this would be possible without the dedication and commitment of volunteers and the NSPCC are currently looking to recruit more volunteers to help continue to deliver this vital service. Clinical negligence: a fix? Government proposals to introduce fixed costs in certain clinical negligence cases are causing disquiet in the legal profession, says Julie Aldred of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

udges, lawyers and victim support associations have united in their condemnation of the government’s proposals to introduce fixed costs in clinical negligence cases where the damages are below £250,000. The reasons for their concern fall broadly into two categories: the limiting of access to justice and the issues arising from the conflict between the government’s dual role as executive and defendant in the majority of cases. If the proposals are adopted it will limit lawyers’ ability to take on ‘low value’ cases. Unlike much other personal injury work, low value does not necessarily mean low costs. A great deal of time can be spent investigating claims made by patients who may neither know nor understand what has happened to them. There are significant hurdles to overcome in order to bring a successful action, and victims have to bear the full burden of proving both breach of duty and causation. Moreover, compensation of up to £250,000 can make a significant difference to a patient’s quality of life. If specialist clinical negligence lawyers are unable to take on low value cases, those most affected will be the most vulnerable, such as patients with mental health issues, the elderly and the disabled, whose cases can be the most complex of all. Legal aid has been withdrawn by this government from all claims except in cases of neurological injury at birth. A consultation process is being run by the Department of Health (DoH), despite the fact that in most cases of clinical negligence the DoH, represented by the NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA), is itself the defendant. There is an obvious, and potentially unlawful, conflict of interest where a defendant claims the right to impose fixed costs on claimants.

The main driver behind the new proposals was a report from the NHSLA in 2015, which asserted that lower-value claims are causing disproportionate costs to the health service, but evidence from claimant practitioners suggests that it is the defendants themselves who are responsible for the increase in costs. Often, legal bills are massively increased as a result of the NHS’s failure to admit liability at an early stage. There is a pre-proceedings protocol designed to settle cases where the defendant has no real defence without resorting to court proceedings. This appeared to work well for a while, but in the last few years the NHSLA have been denying liability in cases where an early admission was the appropriate response. The proposals do nothing to tackle the underlying problems behind the rising number of medical accidents. The government should be looking at remedying the underlying causes by, for example, providing more resources and better training for its personnel, investing more in preventative medicine and cooperating with professional bodies’ guidelines for best practice if they want to reduce the negligence bill. lub cricket has changed greatly since 1966, although as a wise man once said, ‘it is still a game of bat and ball’. On the field we have seen a spectacular growth in youth and ladies’ and girls’ cricket, with age-group competitions and trophies open to all. Practice, at one time consisting of ad-hoc nets, is now organised and concentrated. Off the field, various factors have combined to change the post-match culture, which used to consist of almost mandatory socialising with the opposition and, it cannot be denied, quite heavy drinking, to one where away teams usually depart shortly after the close of play. Initially, the arrival of the breathalyser in 1967 had an impact, and then we had the very welcome influx of players whose ethnic and religious backgrounds meant consumption of alcohol was barred. There can be no doubt that this cultural change affected clubs as bar profits fell sharply, and it is to the credit of committees and treasurers that clubs maintained solvency and indeed thrived (sponsorship played a significant part in this). Some specific changes for the better in club cricket since 1966 can be identified as being in the areas of competitive cricket, umpiring,

equipment and fielding. It seems hard for today’s generations to understand that, in the Home Counties 50 years ago, not only was there no league cricket but many clubs strongly opposed its introduction. Views at Wanstead were mixed, but moves towards a degree of competition were taking place and the club captain at the time, Brian Brumwell, had no doubt that this was the way forward. In the early 1960s the Evening Standard introduced unofficial league tables for clubs north and south of the Thames, with the winners playing each other in a mid-week September game. Wanstead got involved from the outset and won the overall title by

July 2016 beating a very powerful Old Whitgiftian side (including test player Raman Subba Row), but participating in this competition was not favoured by many senior figures. At the same time Wanstead entered a side in the 20-overs evening cup tournament hosted by South Woodford Cricket Club (an early forerunner of today’s very popular T20), winning the cup in near darkness one memorable late summer evening. All this gave not just the players but many members the taste for competitions and the movement became irresistible. By the 1970s the Essex League made a faltering start. Out of the steady growth of leagues, not just in Essex but across the south of England, came a culture when matches started on time and the 20 overs minimum from the start of the last hour became compulsory. The improvement in the conduct of play this brought cannot be over-

emphasised – no longer did we see tasteless gamesmanship and time-wasting. Obviously, leagues brought minuses as well as pluses. Going to county-based leagues meant the loss of many attractive and much-loved fixtures outside the borders – at Wanstead we lost the likes of Winchmore Hill, Enfield and Eastcote. It can also be argued that the intensity of league cricket and the lure of promotion have increased hostility between players and with officials. The author, in a long career as player and umpire, has been present twice where violence on the field seemed likely.

In the second of a series of articles looking at the lives behind the names found on the memorials at St Mary's Church in Wanstead, EoLFHS members explore the life of Morton Drummond (1832–1898)

orton was born into a large family in Westminster on 8 February 1832, his parents being Charles and Mary Drummond. Mary’s father was William Eden, First Lord (Baron) of Auckland, statesman and diplomat. The Auckland Islands, south of New Zealand and discovered in 1806, were named after him. A more recent family member, Sir Anthony Eden, was the British Prime Minister between 1955 and 1957. Morton’s baptism was held at St Peter’s Church, Pimlico: Morton was a family name from their ancestor John Morton, Prebendary of Durham in the 17th century. A second baptism was held on 7 July 1832 in Steeple Bumpstead, Essex, where his father owned Bower Hall, now demolished. In 1851 Morton was living in Rimpton, Sherborne, Dorset and is shown on the census of that year as a ‘Classical Scholar’. He matriculated from Caius College, Cambridge in 1856, and the following year was ordained Deacon of Bath and Wells, becoming priest there in 1858. Between 1861 and 1868 he was Perpetual Curate of Exmoor, Devon, living at the Parsonage House in Dulverton, Somerset. In December 1861 Morton married Caroline Traherne in Bettws Parish Church, Glamorgan. Caroline, although a British subject, had been born in France and together they had four children: two sons and two daughters. In 1868 he became Vicar of Wookey, Somerset, staying in that post and living in the vicarage until 1879 when he moved to Wanstead as rector, where he remained until his death aged 66 on 23 March 1898. A copy of the sketch of the previous church on this site made by the artist JMW Turner in 1787

was presented to Morton on his retirement and now hangs in the vestry. Drummond Road in Wanstead is named after Morton and his name is also remembered by the parish hall, which is named after him. This later became the main hall for the Wanstead Church of England School. Of interest is that Morton’s uncle, Edward Drummond (1792–1843), was a civil servant and secretary to several prime ministers, including Sir Robert Peel. Edward was shot and fatally wounded in Parliament Street by a ‘lunatic’, Daniel M’Naghten, who had mistaken him for Sir Robert. M’Naghten was later tried for murder and found not guilty by reason of insanity. The M’Naghten Rules developed after his trial were to establish the basis for the defence of insanity in all countries that use common law. A booklet documenting the memorials in St Mary the Virgin Church, Overton Drive, Wanstead is being prepared by members of the East of London Family History Society (EoLFHS) and will be available for sale later this year. Low vision, high tech Graham Page – an access technology advisor at East London Vision – helps the visually impaired use technology to gain independence and will be launching a series of drop-in sessions in Wanstead this month

Access technology can be any piece of technology that allows a visually impaired person to perform a task more independently. Most often, this is using a smartphone, a computer or a tablet, but the technology could also be a device that helps a blind person play audio books, listen to internet radio or read printed paper-based material, such as post. I work for East London Vision as an access technology advisor, and I have worked in this field for 20 years. Our aim is to enhance and link vision-impaired services and organisations throughout east London, improving the quality of life for blind and partially sighted people and increasing individual independence. As part of my work, I have been running access technology surgeries since January 2016 with the help of Christine Thompson, who works for Redbridge Libraries. During these sessions I have been able to help people use their smartphones more effectively, use their tablet for listening to radio and TV and help people choose an appropriate computer for their needs. There have also been demonstrations of the talking book services available from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and we are hoping to have companies such as Humanware, Pamtrad systems and others demonstrating equipment at future events too.
