'You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family'. A statement that is largely true in a literal sense, but also one that carries an important figurative message – to make the best of that over which you have no control. Despite having no choice in our genealogical make up, family is, by and large, of paramount importance to most people. The idiom therefore acts as an important reminder that matters in which we have no say can still be hugely important and beneficial to us. A variant of the saying could read: 'you can choose your house, but you can't choose your neighbours', and this should hopefully offer some food for thought in the context of a community magazine.

Wanstead is no stranger to rising house prices – not to mention rental rates – brought about, in no small part, by the demand among buyers wishing to live here. There are plenty of people choosing their homes in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook and it doesn't take much research to discover that most are pleased with the selection of neighbours they find themselves sharing their streets, parks and shops with. From community-building parties (see pages 22 and 52) to community-enhancing gardening projects (see page 26), and from community artists (see pages 12-13) to community angels (see pages 34-35), there is no shortage of neighbourhood camaraderie and pride for those who choose to call Wanstead home.

An optimist could even see some degree of good emerge from the area's less appealing traits: parking problems, the closure of our police station and the future of Evergreen Field, for example, have all inspired community campaigning and bolstered neighbourly ties. We're seeing this process in action once again as parents come together over a lack of primary school places and speak out as one community voice (see page 38).

We may not get to choose our family or our neighbours, but we can choose to become friends with them all.

World Cup song by Wanstead resident can still be a winner Former teacher and Wanstead resident Jasper Ward released an anthem for the 2014 Brazil World Cup last month, to raise money for Cancer Research. England's One, which Jasper originally co-wrote for the 2006 World Cup, was re-recorded this year and features the collective voices of 7,000 children from across the country.

Jasper decided to fundraise for Cancer Research after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and it is

The Redbridge Rhymesters will be hosting a poetry event for the over-50s at Wanstead's Allan Burgess Centre this month. Organiser Alexandra Wilde said: "The theme will be gardening, which I am sure will give a lot of scope for everyone to think about the joys of actually working in the garden, or just sitting in one and enjoying the surroundings."

Wanstead resident and former head teacher of Little Ilford School Yvonne Powell was made an OBE for her services to education in the Queen's birthday honours last month. Yvonne, who became the principal of Walworth Academy in January 2013 after nine years at Little

Ilford, said: "I am very shocked and thrilled to firstly, have been nominated, and then to actually receive such an honour.

However, any head teacher's success is the result of excellent staff and teachers working so hard for their students and always going that extra mile."

Seeds for Snaresbrook wins Friends of the Earth award

A study of rhododendrons in Wanstead Park is taking place to help build a picture of historic planting, which in turn will help inform the current management of the park. The research is being conducted

by Oxford-based Lear Associates, who

The Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth Seeds for Snaresbrook campaign was named Earthmovers Project of the Year at an award ceremony last month.

The community project, which aims to increase the local bee population and reduce herbicide use, has seen

some 250 tree pits sown with wildflowers by residents. Friends of the Earth Director Andy Atkins said: "Congratulations in recognition of your innovative campaigning, passion and achievement towards our vision for a just and sustainable world."

Nature walk will check on Wanstead Park's chicks

The Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group will be leading a walk through Wanstead Park this month to check on the progress of the park's three Great Crested Grebe chicks on Heronry Lake. "We will also be looking for Ringlet butterflies, to find out whether last

year's success – when they were seen in the park for the first time in years – will be repeated," explained group member Tim Harris. The guided walk, which will last around two hours, will take place on Sunday 13 July, departing from the tea hut at 10am.

A group of dance students from Wanstead High School, known as the WanSteady Crew, have won through to the finals of a London-wide dance competition. The Step into Dance programme – which provides weekly extra-curricular dance

New art trail leader seeks 'angel' to offer pop-up venue

Wanstead salon reaches finals of national awards

Staff at Wanstead High Street's Zoology salon are celebrating after being named as finalists in the Best Local Salon category of a national hairdressing competition. Salon director Mark Mountney and his team will be attending the 2014 Most

Wanted Awards at the Tate Modern in September. "We are absolutely delighted to be finalists in this hugely prestigious award… It really does demonstrate how dedicated Zoology is in providing not only amazing hairdressing, but first class service too," said Mark.

New Art Trail Wanstead leader Angela Daley, who has produced a large angel wall hanging for the event, is looking for a real 'angel' to donate a closed shop or other suitable premises to use as a pop-up venue for the trail. "Any length of time, would be appreciated," she

says. "It could be a day or several months." The artist has experience in a wide range of styles and is planning a number of public participation events for the 16-day trail.

Following the leader

W

hile most people can be divided into thinkers or doers, Angela possesses the best of both qualities – certainly vital while organising many dozens of venues and a huge number of local artists, plus special events, for this year's art trail.

She cites her many years in PR as valuable experience for this important voluntary role, but much of her drive for the trail comes from the area that she always planned to work in. Her father, Robert Hendra, was a leading stained glass painter, who helped create the Battle of Britain window in Westminster Abbey.

Angela looked forward to being apprenticed to her father, but was devastated when he said it was no longer a good idea as demand for the craft had begun to wane dramatically.

Angela was persuaded to follow a more general art education, attending Watford School of Art for two years. But disappointed at not being able to work in stained glass, she later agreed to acquire "useful skills", such as learning to type, and was recruited by a PR company. She didn't have time to focus on art again until several years later, when she attended a City Lit

class making ceramics. Soon she was making large pieces in Raku and moved on to creating metal and resin sculptures, often in the shape of horses. Handling the heavy pieces became more difficult in recent years and Angela went back to 'flat art', painting in acrylic and water colour, drawing and making collages. She also enjoys etching and making lino and monotype prints and is a member of East London Printmakers in Hackney.

Angela is one of the Art Group Wanstead members who lives outside E11, but has strong links to the area, including attending local classes. "I really enjoy the rigours of drawing again, attending Patrick Purcell's life drawing classes at Wanstead House," she says.

This summer, she has exhibited work at The Society of Women Artists' open exhibition at the Mall Galleries and at Blackheath Art Society's summer show.

Recently, she discovered a love of batik, using hot wax and silk paint on calico, appreciating some of the beautiful effects comparable to stained glass.

Some fabulous attractions are shaping up for this year's local art trail in September, thanks to its new leader Angela Daley. Donna Mizzi introduces this prolific artist

Self-deprecatingly, she refers to herself as a generalist, though her knowledge of various forms of art will be invaluable for the trail. For the event, she is producing a series of angels, including a 2m by 1.5m batik wall hanging to go in St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook. "Not a day passes when I don't create a piece a piece of art," she admits.

Last year, she organised an end-of-trail auction.

So what made her volunteer to lead the trail this time? "I was lucky enough to sign on with the trail last year, and thought maybe it's time for me to sign on and help others… and have some fun." Some public art with local participation is being planned, while Angela is also a keen advocate of workshops and handmade banners. She is also an ecoenthusiast, hoping to increase awareness through art. One of her latest etchings, titled Text Noah Now (shown here) focuses on rising water and drowned cities.

This year, the trail's theme is Make Art, Not War. Will she be asking the art trail to follow a green theme next year? Follow Angela and watch this space.

Art Group Wanstead is a voluntary group, promoting art and a sense of community.

Payments cover the cost of promotion for the trail.

This year, local residents, including children, are being encouraged to create art in their front gardens or front windows. There is no fee or registration needed for this 'HomeFront' element of the trail.

Suburban song From lunch at Robins Pie & Mash to song writing on the banks of Eagle Pond, local band Suburban 100 enjoy living in Wanstead and gigging across London. Guitarist James Mackenzie tells their story

T

his month, we are looking forward to playing two festival shows in Peterborough and London and a headline slot at the O2 Islington Academy, with a set full of songs that were written in our shared house in Wanstead.

Myself (guitarist), Terry Withers (frontman) and Stewart McNicol (bassist) have been friends since school, having bonded first over football and later over a shared passion for good music and good beer. Shortly after moving here together last year I was sat in Wanstead Hairdressers speaking to Dave about our musical aspirations and explaining that we were missing a drummer. As a fount of local knowledge, Dave recommended that we get in touch with his pal Richard, who happened to live a few streets away. Richard was running a northern soul night called The State We're In, and we quickly found common ground in musical tastes. We began making weekly trips to Enterprise Studios in Denmark Street to practice, and Richard and Stewart added an exciting new dimension to the songs that Tel and I had been writing. It wasn't long before we began gigging on the London circuit, and we have spent the first half of this year playing a variety of events, from packed shows in Vibe Bar and Water Rats to tiny pub gigs with more band members than audience.

We are all self-taught musicians. I learned to play the guitar while bored in bed with a broken leg aged 16, and the others have followed similarly unorthodox paths. I think that gives our music a raw and more immediate edge, which lends itself to the type of sound we are trying to create.

Growing up, we have always been interested in subcultures from previous generations, such as the mods and rockers, the punks and the indie kids. Musically, we have varied tastes, including northern soul, shoegaze, 60s psychedelia, garage rock and Brit Pop. We can all agree on a love of The Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Smiths, Blur, and The Jam. Our own name comes from a Paul Weller lyric book (please don't sue us Paul).

We don't claim any great hardship and we avoid, at all costs, the pitfalls of excessively political lyrics, but too many early mornings spent bleary eyed at Snaresbrook station commuting to dull jobs have infused our songs with a certain frustration and anti-establishment feeling – music for a jilted generation (or a spoilt one). But Tel's lyrics would be more likely to inspire a riot than a soundtrack to an introspective moan.

Apart from associating Snaresbrook station with a depressingly-long commute on the Central Line, we have loved living in Wanstead.

It seems to have retained some of the old East End character that's been lost in other areas, and there's a vibrant community. There are pleasant surroundings (we used to sit by the lake opposite Snaresbrook Crown Court, writing songs on the acoustic) but it's close enough to London that we can get to the venues and studios around Soho and Camden. Before every gig, we have our lucky lunch in Wanstead – pie and mash at Robins.

Time for neighbours Addison Road's annual street party continues a fine British tradition of neighbours coming together for the good of their community.

:30am on a Saturday morning, the sun is beginning its gentle ascent into the London sky and the roads are silent, save for the noise coming from the hoisting of union flags up and down the street.

Just over a week after the 70th anniversary commemorations of the D-Day landings held on the beaches of Normandy, Addison Road in Wanstead celebrated its annual street party.

Many of those attending the party weren't even born to witness it, but the actions taken by those brave few on the 6 June 1944 marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War and ensured our freedom.

During those dark days, Ilford, Woodford and Wanstead sustained many civilian casualties and great property damage from German bombing, especially V1 and V2 rocket attacks. Indeed, a flying bomb that dropped locally was so powerful, it caused damage to the west windows of Christ Church.

In spite of the grief, the destruction and the pain caused during that campaign (or maybe because of it), neighbours throughout London came together to help each other, to support each other and display a community spirit that is quintessentially and beautifully British.

Addison Road's annual street party is a gathering of neighbours of all faiths and creeds, friends of all colours and nationalities and a display of the same community spirit witnessed by London's East End during WWII that made this city and country great back then and continues to make this city and this country great today.

Now in its third year, our annual street party continues to attract attention from residents and local press alike, keen to know more about what we get up to. Apart from the communal lunch (to which Zainab Indian Restaurant and Belgique always donate food), activities range from three-legged races and party games to singing, dancing an RAF flypast and the obligatory

raffle, which this year raised £301 for Saint Francis Hospice.

The day is a fantastic opportunity for residents to come together, catch up, share stories and strengthen the bond of community on our street.

It also offers a wonderful opportunity for children to get out onto the street and play together on their bikes and go-karts, without the risk of passing traffic.

The day draws to a close and as the final beams of sunlight dapple the heads of corn flowers or Flanders poppies planted among the tree pits along Addison Road, I can think of no better tribute to the men and women who lost their lives during times of conflict than an event like this that's designed to break down barriers, dispel animosity and unite people.

From small seeds Ann Williams and Diana Korchien of Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth report on the progress – good and bad – of Seeds for Snaresbrook, a project designed to help boost the local bee population

anstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth are proud to announce that the Seeds for Snaresbrook project, supported by an Olympic Legacy grant from Redbridge Council, is under way.

After the entire ward was leafleted by volunteers, the project – to sow tree pits in Snaresbrook with bee-friendly cultivars and native wildflowers – was taken up by local residents, whose enthusiasm and hard work is evident in the number of signs marking the adopted trees that have sprung up.

As well as providing forage for bees and other pollinators, the project has other benefits, not least a strengthening of neighbourhood ties.

Teamwork is essential in sowing and maintaining the seeds, and as neighbours work together at these tasks, they generate a sense of pride in the street and strengthen community spirit. In Gordon Road, the St Joseph's School Parents' Association funded the purchase of extra perennials and Help for Heroes poppy seeds to commemorate WWI. All ages have been involved, from pre-school children to pensioners. Even those without gardens had an opportunity to sow and nurture plants and enjoy the benefits of an attractive environment. For children, the project also has an educational value in teaching the importance of the bee population and the vital link between the health of bees and the food we eat.

In our efforts to recruit traders to adopt tree pits outside their shops, we walked the High Street from end to end, from the junction with Hollybush Hill, right across the bottom of Hermon Hill and all the way to the Eastern Avenue opposite Wanstead station. In so doing, we couldn't help noticing that there were many challenges here to the success of our project. Top of the list came the universal practice of using the tree pits as bin bag collection points for the dustmen. As our photo demonstrates, the regular presence of towering piles of unsightly rubbish

constitutes a growth deterrent to all but the most determined (and often unlovely) weeds. Little wonder that the council have been locked for years into a quarterly cycle of herbicide spraying across all 1,167 tree pits in the Snaresbrook ward.

Apart from the rubbish problem, some of our seeds have failed to germinate due to the lack of modest, but essential preparation work. Wildflower seeds may be tough, much hardier in fact than ordinary garden plants, but to successfully begin their journey they do require a moderately disturbed topsoil in which to lay down their roots, and gentle watering in the early stages of growth. Many of the project participants have required tutoring and assistance with regards to soil preparation and initial aftercare, others have simply sprinkled the seeds and forgotten about them. Fortunately, there's a second chance to get involved in Seeds for Snaresbrook – and still time to get it right.

Referee's decision Providing a reference for a former employee is a simple exercise that can be a minefield for the unwary, explains Stephen Watmore, head of employment law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee

A

few years ago, we were consulted by a man that had worked for the government in an IT capacity. His case was not particularly complex. In essence, he had been employed in the Civil Service for several years and left because he fell out with a new supervisor. The supervisor had then given a negative and unjustifiable reference and our client had been unable to find subsequent employment as a result.

Nobody pretends that suing Government is pleasant – our client had consulted several firms of solicitors before he walked in our door and none of them had been successful in pursuing his claim – but after a seemingly endless process of obfuscation, prevarication and outright denial, eventually they realised that we just weren't going to give up. It took about five years, but ultimately we were able to negotiate a substantial settlement in our client's favour. We then attempted to agree our claim for costs.

We've all been in this business a long time, but nobody in the office can remember a more tortuous exercise than trying to get our costs paid on this occasion. It took well over a year of chipping away at the mighty edifice of Government before we finally obtained a default costs certificate. Having done so you might have thought that was the end of it – the debtor would simply pay up since we know they're good for the money – but, sadly, no. Despite repeated requests, they just wouldn't pay. Finally, in despair at their utter intransigence, we took the decision to send the bailiffs into the department concerned, with an order to "seize goods to the value of" etc. Unsurprisingly, the bailiffs walked out with a cheque.

This was a case that turned on the inability of two people to work together and the vindictive actions of one of them, so what are the lessons to be learned? Well, firstly, if you are an employer, you need to be extremely careful about saying anything at all about your former employees, whether formally by way of a reference or informally via social media or just chatting in the

pub, especially if the former employee signed a settlement agreement when they left. To what extent can you, for example, control what your current employees might be saying about a former colleague? Unless you already have robust procedures in place, you should consider asking an experienced employment lawyer to review your existing HR set-up. They can give you a 'best practice' health check and, if necessary, provide you with all the tools you need to ensure that you comply with current legislation.

Secondly, if you are an employee and you have reason to suspect that a former employer has not dealt fairly with you, don't suffer in silence. Speak to an experienced employment lawyer and they will advise you on the prospects of a claim.

Angels in Wanstead

The Larder In the seventh of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to the Larder angels

ook to the left on the Larder's counter and you'll see a sign and coffee cup asking for sponsors to support a 100km, 30-hour walk in aid of Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. I thought I'd help Paul Grant's fundraising activities by writing about him for this month's Angels in Wanstead column, but while waiting to talk to him I was intercepted by Olivia Smart, who asked if her charity could be included too. It seemed unfair not to do so, and therefore unfair not to include all the Larder staff's fundraising projects, so that's what I'm going to do.

Olivia Smart is running the 5k Race For Life in memory of her Auntie Julie, who passed away in September 2012, aged just 47. Olivia said:

"I'm not much of a runner, but I have decided that I'm up for the challenge. Throughout the training, fundraising and the race itself my thoughts will be with the bravest woman that I know, my Auntie Julie. Julie courageously battled cancer (both breast and a rare and violent form of lung cancer) three times in her 47 years. She was an inspirational lady with untold strength who never stopped fighting to be with the people she loved. My Auntie Julie never gave up in her fight to survive, so let's fight cancer together and never give up in the search for a cure!"

Rosie Evans Hill's motivations for what sounds like a terrifying skydive are more complicated: "My charity will probably be leukaemia because that's how my mother died. But I haven't

decided for definite because I don't believe that the only reason to do something for charity is because that particular thing has had an affect on my life. Surely charity, in the true sense of the word, should be something out of the goodness of your heart, unrelated to you in order to empathise with someone else. So you never know, I might just end up closing my eyes and choosing whichever one my finger ends up on."

Richard Harris is fitting in the time for training for his race while working at the Larder and pursuing experience as a teaching assistant. He explained why: "My father has Parkinson's disease and seeing what he goes through, without the support from the charity he'd be locked in, so the charity needs to be supported." He'll be running the half marathon at Hyde Park in October and is also planning a skydive next year.

Last but not least, we come to Paul Grant, who, along with three friends, has done a number of interesting charity challenges in the past. Not content with a severely challenging walk (as a result of training, he and his friends are beginning to appreciate the testing enormity of what they've taken on and have been advised not to sleep en route or they'll not be able to get up) they are taking requests for tasks with JustGiving donations, the strangest of which is currently to carry a pineapple and eat it on the way.

He says: "So far, 20 to 30 km is OK, but at 30 your feet hurt and at 40 you're really tired, but we're aiming to get it done in 22 to 24 hours as you're advised not to sleep on the way in case you don't get up."

Dan Beharall, owner of the Larder, has donated generously to Paul's charity already.

Local,local,local Tired children and a loss of income are some of the problems Wanstead resident Greg Dolph and other local parents are facing as a result of the shortage of local primary school places

W

hen school places were announced in April, my family and 30 others in the Wanstead, Snaresbrook and South Woodford area were dismayed to find that our children had been assigned to primary schools over three miles away in Barkingside, due to a shortage of local school places.

A bumper crop of siblings, plus a high number of people moving into the area, has put so much pressure on local schools that the distances by which places have been allocated has dramatically shrunk, a trend which looks set to continue over the next few years. Last year, Nightingale allocated spots up to 0.8 miles away, this year that has shrunk to 0.49 miles, while Snaresbrook's have shrunk from 1 mile to 0.69 miles. Aldersbrook and Oakdale school distances have also shrunk significantly.

This has caused a 'blind spot' in the area where there are no primary school places. Children living on Nightingale Lane cannot get into Nightingale School. It would be funny if the situation was not such an enormous hardship for the families impacted by this crisis.

Within a day, the Wanstead School Places Group was formed to represent the people in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and South Woodford who are affected by the dramatic shortage of places this year, and those who could be affected in the coming years. We have quickly grown to over 200 supporters – people who understand the tough position that families are in because of this situation.

It is hard to overestimate the difficulties the lack of places is going to cause families with two working parents or single parents. The schools allocated to our children are 45 minutes to an hour away by public transport, so they will have close to two hours commuting on rush-hour trains and buses, just to get to and from school.

This has a dramatic knock-on effect – the children won't be able to get a good night's sleep, much less have time for homework or quality time with

mum and dad. For the parents, this also makes commuting to work in London much longer than it needs to be. This excessive travelling has a huge impact on family life, with everyone, including younger and older siblings, being the poorer for it. Imagine having to deal with this situation for the next seven years.

Clearly something needed to be done, so as a group we contacted our local councillors and pleaded our case. The council was quick to arrange a meeting and is looking to set up a bulge class at a local school for this year's children. However, at the time of writing, nothing has been confirmed and this means that local parents are having to live with this stress and anxiety on a daily basis. They are also having to choose between earning a living or dropping an income so one parent can drop off and pick up their children at a decent time.

Summer stage Lisa Gazeley from Epping Forest's head office invites you to celebrate summer with Shakespeare, Gilbert and Sullivan and Roald Dahl as Wanstead Park's open-air theatre season gets underway

W

hat better way to spend a summer afternoon or evening than at the glorious Wanstead Park, enjoying a picnic in the Temple grounds, while being entertained with captivating theatre? Take your pick from three performances taking place this month and next.

Kicking off the trio of productions, theatre group Illyria will be bringing the work of Shakespeare to Wanstead Park with a performance of Macbeth. Macbeth's outstanding qualities and achievements ensure that he has a bright future ahead of him. One brief, crazy suggestion from a mad witch sows a seed of ambition, causing the unravelling of a great man, and inciting a chain of treachery, murder and destruction. This evening production is performed on a stage closely replicating those of 17th-century touring troupes. Expect a gripping story and the dazzling swordplay for which Illyria has an unmatched reputation. Macbeth will be performed on Thursday 24 July at 7pm.

Coming to the park in August is The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular comic opera. It tells the story of an apprentice pirate, born on 29 February, who quits the pirate ship and falls in love with a girl on land – until he learns he is contracted to the pirates until his 21st birthday, not his 21st year. What is he to do? This matinee show is packed with laughter, romance and a ship-full of memorable lyrics, such as To be a Pirate King!, Modern Major General and A Policeman's Lot is Not a Happy One. The Pirates of Penzance will be performed on Sunday 3 August at 3pm.

Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Medicine completes the line-up of shows. It's the first day of half-term and Grandma has written to say she's coming to stay. George is going to have to give up his bedroom for her. It wouldn't be so bad if Grandma was nice, but George's grandma is horrible. George decides to concoct his own medicine, which he gives to Grandma with hilarious results. Roald Dahl's classic is full

A party in the park Wanstead's annual party in the park returns this month with its usual line-up of entertainment, activities for the whole family and an eclectic music mix to suit just about every taste. Organiser Gill James reports

T

his year's local celebration of summer in the beautiful grounds of Wanstead Park, popularly known as 'The Party in the Park', will take place on Saturday 19 July and, as in previous years, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Party-goers are welcome to bring picnics or buy refreshments on site. But this year, if you are bringing your own, be sure to bring any drinks in plastic bottles or cans, as this year's Music in Wanstead Park is a glass-free event. In line with other summer festivals, the Redbridge Licensing Department insists that no glass will be allowed on site. All the big supermarkets now sell perfectly drinkable wine in cartons and plastic bottles, so there is no excuse not to come prepared. If you don't want to bring your own food, there will be the usual array of delectable items provided by local community groups, such as the BBQ, the veggie stall, the Caribbean stall, the waffle stall, the vintage tea tent and the everpopular Star of India curry.

Our headline band for the evening concert is Payback, 'the ultimate party band', who will provide lively soul and funk music to dance the night away. Payback have supported Girls Aloud, Phil Manzanera and Kerry Katona, as well as appearing on the same bill as Atomic Kitten and Johnny Carr.

Also appearing on the main programme are the Iroko African Drumming Jamboree, Georgia and the Dales folk group, the Wanstead Rock Choir, Fiddles and Co, Wanstead High School Big Band and Wanstead High School rock bands. There will also be two hands-on music workshops for adults and children in the acoustic tent: a drumming workshop led by Iroko Drummers and a Ukelele workshop run by the Wanstead Ukelele Band.

Circo Rum Ba Ba Theatre Company, who presented the spectacular whale storytelling tent last year, will be back with a new show, Dress Circle. An enormous woman with sumptuously brocaded childbearing hips glides

around effortlessly, sharing tittle-tattle with her audience. When at last she chooses to stop, the orchestra beneath her petticoats tunes up and with great aplomb, her skirt opens to reveal a full theatre and a series of theatrical surprises.

Adding to the colourful scene will be swingboats, stilt walkers, Morris dancers and a craft tent with demonstrations run by local patchwork expert Jackie Ketley.

In the afternoon, youngsters can wear themselves out with sporting activities, including a climbing wall, rollapaluza static bike racing and the football penalty shoot-out. For animal lovers, expect to see Snakey Sue's live snakes, live owls from Owlwise and lots of other animals from Wellgate Community Farm.

Music in Wanstead Park 2014 takes place on 19 July from 2pm to 9pm, with entrances at Northumberland Avenue and Warren Road.

A hand, please Following the discovery of two photographs of her elderly aunt as a young lady, Barbara Lumb – who lives in Yorkshire – is keen to learn more about the photographer, one Arthur Hands from Wanstead

I

was intrigued to find two lovely studio portraits of my Auntie Jean when clearing her house after she moved into a care home.

They were in the same brown sturdy envelope in which they had been sent and the postage stamp (6d) showed the head of King George VI and the rings of the 1948 Olympic Games.

The photographs show a rather glamorous 22-year-old lady. The neatly written signature reads "Arthur Hands, Wanstead".

An internet search told me he was the second generation photographer to have a studio on the High Street in Wanstead, and that he lived at 2 Mornington Terrace. The Churchill Archives – a repository for the preservation of modern personal papers – show he had photographed Winston Churchill in the 1920s, when Churchill was Chancellor of the Exchequer. Arthur had written to Churchill asking to be President of the Wanstead branch of the League of Nations, which was a predecessor to today's United Nations.

He had also taken photographs of the writer Vera Brittain's fiancé, which are part of the Vera Brittain Collection at the Imperial War Museum.

So how was it that such a prominent photographer should be sending photographs to my aunt?

Auntie Jean befriended Arthur's son Walter, who served as a Royal Engineer in the Second World War when he was stationed in Yorkshire.

He became a family friend of the Halstead family of Thornhill, near Wakefield, and after the war she visited him in London. She only lost contact when her father died and she couldn't leave her mother. My aunt devoted her life to looking after her mother and, after her death in 1981, she cared for other members of her family as well.

I am interested in finding out more about Arthur Hands (whose birth and death dates appear to be 1894 to 1965) and his son, who sent those photographs 66 years ago. If anyone has any information they wish to share with me I would be delighted to learn more.

S† Gabriel's century As centenary celebrations continue at St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook this month, Lisa Chalmers looks back on the congregation's detailed preparations for a service fit for an Archbishop

E

ver since St Gabriel's Church was consecrated on 16 May 1914 by the first Bishop of Chelmsford, the anniversary has been celebrated. It provides an opportunity to reflect on all who have worshipped in the same space, on God's mission for the church and on Christ's presence among us. It's also a good reason to enjoy a bring-and-share lunch, a glass of something and some good company.

So Sunday 18 May 2014 had been in the diary for about a hundred years, and the people of St Gabriel's were ready for a celebration. Maybe the current Bishop of Chelmsford, the Right Reverend Stephen Cottrell, would agree to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor? An invitation was dispatched while preparations got underway. There was plenty to plan, from the form of service to the party afterwards – involving the congregation and the local community was a priority.

Then the news arrived that the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, would be in the Diocese and would we like him to lead our worship? The parochial church council were convinced that the presence of the Archbishop would give wings to lift the occasion and Aldersbrook's worst kept secret added a buzz to the preparations.

Music rehearsals had to start early for all the pieces to be ready. The choir recruited support from the Aldersbrook community and the Parish of Wanstead choirs and an orchestra of local musicians was put together by John Light, St Gabriel's director of music. The Sunday school children practised singing Circles composed and conducted by parishioner Chris Wilcox. Among the decorations were strings of paper stars and angels made by children from the uniformed groups, Sunday school and Aldersbrook Primary School. Kim Weiss, who is volunteering on the centenary project, said: "After some brainstorming and hours of YouTube tutorials, we decided on origami. I'm really pleased with how

it looked in the end and glad we were able to involve so many children."

The plan was executed: flowers (tick); extra seating (tick); freshly-scrubbed church (tick); glorious spring day (tick). The Archbishop and Bishop arrived in good time to lead a varied and meaningful service, enjoyed by over 300 people. Parishioner Eva Joslin (aged 101) was the only person present older than the church. The children helped Bishop Stephen to dedicate a mosaic of the Baptism of Christ in the presence of local artist Katrin Hall, who led the project.

Father Martyn said: "My greatest pleasure was that the service was a real parish celebration, involving church and community and that Archbishop Justin led things in such a way that didn't take away from that, but added a unique and special flavour to a great day for St Gabriel's and, I hope, for Aldersbrook too."

Archbishop Justin's sermon was centred around the concept of people 'being church' rather than buildings 'being church' and for the next 100 years at least, that's exactly what we plan to be.

Wanstead Park 1784–1812 The ovvners of

In the 19th of a series of monthly articles looking at the owners of Wanstead Park through history, Richard Arnopp tells how Wanstead House became a centre of counter-revolutionary activity during the years it was occupied by members of the exiled French Royal Family

ast month, we saw how Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, took the tenancy of Wanstead House in 1802 following his arrival in England.

German writer Johanna Schopenhauer visited during Condé's time there, and commented: "The elderly Prince of Condé continued his previous way of life at Wanstead House as well as circumstances permitted. Many followers and friends who had emigrated at the same time formed a small coterie around him; in which they strictly preserved the customs and etiquette of their former lives… We saw them in the costume of the court of Louis XVI, their hats under their arms, walking around the great green square in front of the house…"

Schopenhauer continued: "It was a strange sight to see here, on this once hostile ground, the ancien regime wandering, as it were, in exile, with these greying courtiers, in their very essence, serving as its representatives".

According to the Comtesse de Boigne, the formality and dullness of Condé's miniature court at Wanstead was not to the taste of his son: "The Duc de Bourbon… could not endure the regular life of Wanstead and was generally to be found in London in a small suite of rooms with one valet called Gui, who had attended him from his youth."

the new French republic. Although the Prince had abandoned a military role after 1801, he continued to act as a focus for Royalist opposition. In April 1803, a proclamation was issued from Wanstead House, signed by eight members of the exiled Royal Family, in support of the titular King Louis XVIII, who had recently rejected an offer from Napoleon Bonaparte of a generous financial settlement should he and his family renounce their claim to the French throne.

Since his coup of 1799, Bonaparte had gradually transformed the French regime into a personal dictatorship. Although his conciliatory religious policy and abandonment of class warfare succeeded in winning over many opponents of the Revolution, he was nonetheless now seen as being the chief obstacle to a restoration of the monarchy and so became the target of a series of Royalist plots. One of these was the Cadoudal-Pichegru conspiracy, which Bonaparte's secret police were tracking in early 1804. Their investigations brought to light information that appeared to implicate the Prince de Condé's only grandson, Louis Antoine, Duc d'Enghien.

Enghien was living at this time just across the French border at Ettenheim, in the domains of the Margrave of Baden. In March, on Bonaparte's orders, French dragoons crossed the Rhine, surrounded the duke's house and arrested him. He was brought to the Château de Vincennes, near Paris, where a military commission was hastily convened to try him.

By this time, it was apparent that Enghien was innocent of the accusations against him, so the charges were changed to bearing arms against France in the last war and with intending to do the same in the new coalition then being formed against France. Found guilty, the duke was shot by firing squad in the moat of the castle, near his freshly-dug grave.

The kidnapping and execution of Enghien were carried out against the advice of some of Bonaparte's closest associates, and shocked European opinion. However, Bonaparte saw it as an exemplary strike against a political enemy, and was to defend it even in his will. Nonetheless, a famous comment often attributed to Joseph Fouché was that, politically "it was worse than a crime; it was a blunder".

The Comtesse de Boigne described how the Duc de Bourbon learned of his son's death: "As his breakfast was late, he rang for Gui three times with no result. He then went down into the little kitchen, and found Gui with his elbows on the table and his head in his hands, shedding tears, with the newspaper before him. At his approach he raised his head and attempted to hide the newspaper. This the Duc de Bourbon did not permit, and he then read the sad news of his son's assassination. Two hours afterwards the Prince de Condé arrived and found him still in this kitchen, from which Gui had been unable to remove him, and into which he would allow no one else to enter. The Prince de Condé took him back to Wanstead.

The care of Madame de Reuilly, his natural daughter, who was brought up by Madame de Monaco, afterwards Princesse de Condé, helped to soothe his grief."

During the 11 years of war between the United Kingdom and France after 1803, it became increasingly apparent that no lasting peace with Bonaparte would be possible, and the British began to regard the option of restoring the House of Bourbon ever more seriously.

In 1807, the titular King Louis XVIII arrived in Britain, to be treated as an honoured ally. For example, in 1808 the King, in the company of members of the British Royal Family, was entertained at Wanstead by the Prince de Condé, and reviewed units of the British Army on Wanstead Flats.

The Prince de Condé's occupation of Wanstead House came to an end in 1810, when he moved to Wimbledon House in Surrey. In 1814, after 25 years, the prince returned to France following the restoration of his cousin Louis XVIII. He died in 1818, bequeathing in his will £50 to the poor of Wanstead and £50 to the poor of Woodford, in remembrance of the hospitable asylum afforded him during the years of his exile.

Condé's son, the last of his line, died in 1830.

Next month, we shall see how Wanstead enjoyed a glorious renaissance after its owners took up residence following an absence of nearly 50 years.

Masterpiece mystery This month, the Courtauld Institute of Art begins its investigation into the masterpiece mystery of St Mary's Church. Penelope Garlick takes a look at the work involved

I

t's an exciting time at St Mary's Church on Overton Drive. The Courtauld Institute, one of the world's leading centres for the study of the history of art, will this month begin its attempt to reveal the secrets behind a painting that has dominated the altar place for a century, yet about which very little is known.

In last month's edition, we saw that the Courtauld Institute had taken a strong interest in the painting hanging at St Mary's Church, Wanstead. At the same time, the Art Institute of Chicago confirmed that it will also be carrying out a technical study of its own version of the 17th century masterpiece. They claim theirs is the original – but is it?

The artwork in question, The Entombment of Christ, was originally by the 17th century Italian Baroque master Guernico. The vulnerable condition of the picture, together with its size, means that most of the research work will be undertaken at the Courtauld's premises on The Strand.

The Institute hopes to carry out some remedial consolidation to stabilise lifting paint on the day of collection, before taking it into central London.

Once safely on site, the painting will then be closely examined by a team of two students and their tutor over four days.

The study will look at the materials and techniques used in the work to establish when it could have been painted and whether any links can be made to Guercino's workshop. Research will also be carried out into Guercino's Italian contemporaries as well as his workshop accounts, commissions and working practice.

Finally, a technical investigation will include X-radiography, examination under ultraviolet light, infrared reflectography, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, material sampling, surface microscopy and further studies using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive

X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). In addition, an examination of Chicago's version will allow comparisons to be made between the two works.

The project is expected to cost in the region of £1,000, but whatever the outcome, it won't solve the painting's problems in the long term. It desperately requires full conservation treatment, including cleaning, relining and retouching.

The Courtauld Institute will provide access to the painting while it is on their premises so that quotes for the work can be obtained. In the meantime, it is hoped that the project will not only serve to raise interest in the painting, but also the funds needed to undertake the restoration.

St. Mary's Church on Overton Drive, Wanstead is considered to be one of the finest, most unspoilt Georgian churches in the country, with services held every Sunday morning at 11am. Visitors are also welcome to view The Entombment of Christ and discover Redbridge's only Grade I listed building on Saturday mornings, between 11am and 1pm. quilters & campaigners Marsh Quilters member Diane Giles explains what can be expected at the group's Wanstead exhibition this month and explains how a campaign to save Walthamstow Marshes led to 35 years of quilting

I

n 1979, a group of women who supported the 'Save The Walthamstow Marshes Campaign' began meeting in their homes to create a quilt. This quilt was used by the Walthamstow Marsh Society to promote the marshes as an educational resource. From this humble beginning, other quilts were made to raise funds for a variety of charities and the Marsh Quilters were born.

Marsh Quilters are a small, friendly, local group of about 35 quilters, ranging in age from mid-20s through to mid-70s, including beginners and professionals and everything in between. We have a common interest in patchwork, quilt making, appliqué and embroidery and related subjects and meet up on a the first Thursday of every month at the Leytonstone United Free Church.

Spurred on by the success of our last exhibition in 2011, we decided to have another one this year, taking place in the beautiful setting of Wanstead's ChristMarsh Church hall.
