Welcome... It always intrigues me as to what issues have the ability to bring a community together. There are, of course, the well-versed campaigns that unite residents in a common goal, to protest against local parking regulations or inappropriate developments, for example. These types of issues tend to initially be fast-paced, with either a quick victory over the proposals or a subsequently long and drawn-out fight. Then there are the campaigns that run on a slow burn – campaigns that have a long-term objective but grab fewer headlines because of their ongoing nature and their often many strands of activities (neighbourhood watch schemes come to mind). There are two distinct community-binding processes at work here: when a group takes up opposition against a proposed change in their area, it’s a reactive response; but when someone joins a neighbourhood watch group, for example, they are being proactive for their community. Both are equally commendable, and they are, of course, not mutually exclusive. It’s hard to believe the first neighbourhood watch scheme didn’t begin in the UK until 1982 – it’s one of those organisations we assume was always there in the background. And in many ways, it probably was, with the sound principles of improving community safety something I’m sure many living in preneighbourhood watch days also sought to achieve. Back then, we relied on good neighbours. Today, we have the infrastructure and the tools to magnify the effects of those good neighbours – community 2.0, perhaps. It’s about that time now when many of us will be making our own proactive decisions for the year ahead. Perhaps you, too, will find room to add ‘good neighbour’ to your 2017 to-do list.

Snaresbrook’s Conservative councillors will be holding a public meeting this month to discuss the changes to parking regulations that are set to be implemented in Wanstead in February. Under the new scheme, parking on the High Street will be governed by a pay and display system, which will be free for up to 30 minutes and charged at £1.20 for one hour and £2.90 for two hours. Other changes include an extension of Wanstead’s existing permit parking zones and the introduction of a new zone, all of which will operate Monday to

Aldersbrook Players

A week of storytelling

A long-running local amateur dramatics group has taken the ‘uneasy but necessary’ decision to lower the curtain for good on its productions. Members of the Aldersbrook Players decided to close down the group after declining numbers prevented them from staging the high-quality shows for which they were known. The group was founded in 1950 as the St Gabriel’s Players before changing their name in 1971.

Libraries across Redbridge will be taking part in the 17th annual National Storytelling Week, which runs from 28 January to 4 February. Events will be run in combination with the weekly Stories, Rhymes and Songs sessions for children under five, which are free to attend (Wanstead Library: 2pm to 2.30pm on Wednesdays and 11am to 11.30am on Fridays; Aldersbrook Library: 2pm to 2.30pm on Thursdays).

Church memorials brought to life in new book by family history society

7

On 6 May 1882 Queen Victoria opened the Forest to the public

A three-year research project into the lives behind the names found on the memorials at St Mary’s Church in Wanstead has culminated in the publication of a book. Among the 30 people included are Sir John Hopkins (1715–1796), the first Welsh Lord Mayor of London, and Sir Josiah Child (1630–1699), who purchased Wanstead House in 1673. The book – which is dedicated to former churchwarden Peter Brown (1947–2015) – was funded by the East of London Family History Society and is available from the church (price: £4).

Help improve your High Street woodland at two volunteer workdays

At the Temple in Wanstead Park this month, historian Mark Gorman will be telling the story of how, in the 19th century, Epping Forest was saved for future generations. The ‘enclosure movement’ saw many of London’s commons turned into private land, but the Forest was saved not only by the City of London but also by public protest. Then, in 1882, Queen Victoria declared the Forest to be for ‘the use and enjoyment of my people for all time’. The talk will take place on 22 January from 1.30pm (£3; booking required). Cricket coach honoured again

Burns Night in Aldersbrook

Having been named coach of the year by a national cricket charity in November, Saba Nasim – the captain of Wanstead’s ladies’ cricket team – was also a runner-up in the 2016 Pride of Sport Awards last month. Saba, who coaches girls’ cricket at Wanstead Leisure Centre, was shortlisted in the award’s local hero category. “It was great celebrating all the unsung heroes of sport, with many Olympians and sports stars attending,” said Saba.

St Gabriel’s Church in Aldersbrook will be hosting a Burns Night supper this month. “There will be an abundance of haggis, piped in by an authentic Pipe Major and graced with Robert Burns’ Address to a Haggis,” said organiser Caroline Ferguson. The evening will also feature a ceilidh, with music by Fiddles & Co. The event – which has been running for over 15 years – will take place on 28 January (adults: £14, children: £6). At this month’s Wanstead Historical Society meeting Mark Gorman and Peter Williams will offer an insight into the prisoner of war camps sited on Wanstead Flats during World War Two. “Wanstead Flats has had many uses over the years, from cattle grazing to circuses, fairs and football, but perhaps none more unusual than when it became the site of camps housing thousands of German and Italian prisoners of war,” said the local historians. Music and drama festival returns

Garden waste collections

The UK’s oldest music festival will return to Snaresbrook’s Forest School next month. The Stratford and East London Music Festival (founded in 1882) used to be held at venues in Stratford but moved to the school in 2013. The 135th festival will begin on 6 February at St Mary’s Church in South Woodford, with activities for choirs and bands, and will continue from 13 to 18 February at Forest School with various music and drama events. Visit wavidi.co/sel

Residents will have to pay for the council’s garden waste collection service when it resumes later this year (£50 for 50 bags). The charge is part of a new costsaving model for the service, which will now see fortnightly collections between April and October only. Green waste can currently be disposed of at a collection site located in Wanstead Leisure Centre’s car park, open from 10am to 4pm on Sundays until the end of March.

FOREST SCHOOL

College Place, Snaresbrook, E17 3PY

Brilliance at Forest with special guest Gordon Banks OBE Forest celebrated its football heritage on Thursday 8 December with special guest Gordon Banks OBE. The nation’s greatest goalkeeper spoke to guests about his lifetime in the footballing world including England’s 1966 World Cup victory. Gordon also spoke fondly of other football legends including Sir Bobby Moore and Jimmy Greaves. He also had wise words of advice for the younger audience members telling them ‘if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone of you’. The evening was the second Brilliance at Forest event following the first in March, which celebrated the work of William Morris. Alongside Gordon Banks, Mark Dickson, CEO of the Independent Schools Football Association and David Court, Talent Identification Lead at the Football Association spoke to guests. Mark spoke about the early days of the modern sport and how many famous teams became the clubs are they are today, while David spoke about how the FA views talent identification, offering parents an insight into how to prepare their children for success in football. According to the Official History of the Football Association, the School ‘played an important

part in the early growth of football’ and can be found ‘among the thirty clubs that comprised the growing membership of the Football Association in 1868’. As early as the 1860s, the School was hosting matches on the land in front of the Main Building which is known as the common with a large chestnut tree and metal rail being used in the game. The common was, therefore, one of the first arenas of modern football and one of the exact spots where it can be said the game began, giving Forest its place as a significant part of football history. During the evening, the School’s Director of Sport, Ben Adams, also spoke about Forest at football today which includes 1st XI boy and girl teams. Most recently, the 1st XI boys team won the London Independent Schools’ Cup. A Forest spokesman said: “Forest was delighted to welcome Gordon Banks OBE to Forest. It was brilliant to hear about his football career, and all his amusing stories from both the pitch and the changing room. We hope guests also got a great feel for the history of football at Forest, which is something we are very proud of and continues to this day.”

Fair organiser fears new parking regulations will damage local events

Progress has been made in the control of floating pennywort in Wanstead Park’s Perch Pond, but it may be several years before water is once again allowed to flow to the next water body in the park’s lake cascade system, which was halted to prevent spreading the aquatic weed. In 2016, contractors removed about 40 cubic metres of floating pennywort and began monthly herbicide treatments. “Though much reduced… we will need to maintain treatment for three to five years,” said Geoff Sinclair, Head of Operations at Epping Forest.

A local artist and the organiser of Wanstead’s monthly Flamingo Fairs has launched a petition to demand a proper consultation over the changes to Wanstead’s Parking regulations. “[The changes will]… make it impossible to run popular fairs in local halls and schools, damage community events, hit community centres… and have other farreaching consequences,” said Donna Mizzi. The petition aims for at least 1,500 signatures, to be presented to Redbridge Council on 19 January. Visit wavidi.com/parkpet

Replacing trees: confirmation

Council to save £14.8m this year

The Wanstead Society has received reassurances from Redbridge Council that damaged or dead trees on the street will continue to be replaced. It follows concerns over a change to the wording of budget allocations, which implied such action might be halted. “I look forward to reading the exact nature of the proposal before I can be satisfied that trees on the highway will be replaced,” said Scott Wilding, chair of the Society.

Due to ‘government cuts, increased demand for our services and inflationary pressures’, Redbridge Council has confirmed it needs to save £42.6m over the next five years and £14.8m this year (2017/18). Council Tax is proposed to rise by 3.99% in 2017/18, including a Social Care Precept of 2%, which will fund adult social care. Feedback on budget proposals is invited before the figures are finalised in February. Visit wavidi.co/bdg17

New Neighbours Bridge

any of you will have been following the Redbridge ward boundary changes proposed by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. It has been confirmed that the current Church End, Roding, Snaresbrook and Wanstead wards will no longer exist and there will be four new ones – Churchfields, South Woodford, Wanstead Village and Wanstead Park – in the next local elections in 2018. Whatever the merits and demerits are of the proposal, it is important to remember that nothing changes as far as Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is concerned. Some people have voiced their own concerns that they will no longer be part of Snaresbrook or Wanstead, but from our perspective the current set-up and organisation will continue as before. It is also worthy to note that NHW works in unison; boundary wards are as irrelevant to us as they are to criminal activity. Indeed, crime solving has been more successful through collaboration with the Safer Neighbourhood Teams of multiple wards, working with the various police community support officers (PCSOs) so that criminal activity does not manifest in one particular area. It is with this principle in mind that NHW needs to focus on the whole of the borough and not just specific wards. One recent initiative developed to achieve this has been Online Watch Link (OWL). This service helps to keep communities safe and reduce crime and keeps people informed of what is going on locally. It is a shared, secure platform for the public and local authorities to maximise the potential of NHW, Shop Watch, Hospital Watch and dozens of other schemes. OWL sends residents the latest local crime alerts and provides management tools for maintaining and expanding watches. OWL was recently

featured on Crimewatch and has also been successfully implemented in Hertfordshire for over 10 years. NHW members receive regular local policing updates and alerts from their local policing team via email, or by telephone if preferred, using the award-winning communication system. Local policing teams can therefore keep communities informed about what is happening locally and how they can help, for example, to look out for stolen property or help find missing people. They will also tell you about local policing events, update you about crimes, incidents or concerning trends in your area, alert you to appeals for information or witnesses and keep

and a safer place for residents and businesses. We do recognise that not everyone has access to the internet and email, so we also have regular ward panel meetings to discuss various issues face to face.

Steve Wilks of Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch details the impact of the potential ward changes in Redbridge and As a final note, there was an article in the Evening Standard (10 November calls for local communities 2016) stating that police today call to work together and on more Londoners to befriend their look after each other neighbours in a bid to tackle a rise in

The [rice of [arking With a trial of new parking regulations starting next month, Steve Wilks looks at the problems it will cause for businesses on Nightingale Lane and calls for a sensible compromise

R

In theory, the charges will encourage a flow of cars, and stop people parking for excessive amounts of time, although no evidence has yet been presented to support this. Shoppers are currently restricted from parking on the High Street between 9.30am and 10.30am to prevent commuters taking up spaces all day. There is also a car park off Grove Park for extended periods (prices have gone up). But documents show the council plans to introduce the new pay and display measures under an Experimental Traffic Order, which means they do not need to consult residents or businesses, despite similar plans being opposed in 2011. More controversially, however, the council also plans to give permits to people living in several roads off the High Street to stop shoppers and commuters clogging them up. These include Wellington Road, Wellesley Road, Halstead Road, Cowley Road, Nightingale Lane, Grosvenor Road, The Avenue, Nelson Road, Eastway, Sylvan Road and Malcolm Way. There needs to be a sensible compromise, balancing the needs of congestion against the commerciality of Wanstead. Local businesses need to be prioritised as much as residents. The council also needs to be aware of the growing businesses along Nightingale Lane, which include a photography gallery, two pubs, an Indian restaurant, a newsagent and a new furniture shop. “This will be the nail in the coffin for thriving local businesses, which the council should be encouraging not penalising. This area of Wanstead is a little community in its own right and is becoming

edbridge Council has analysed local parking habits and now wants to introduce pay and display on the High Street, giving drivers the first 30 minutes free so everyone has “a fair chance to park”.

a destination for locals from all around Wanstead and Snaresbrook to visit… We are in a secondary position to the High Street, which makes trading more difficult as we do not have the same footfall and have to fight hard as it is without added restrictions,” said Geoff Wilkinson of the Eightyfour gallery. Under the current proposals, the shopfront side of Nightingale Lane has been designated a residents’ parking permit area only. This does not take account of the needs of local businesses. Like the High Street, this section should have pay and display parking so there is space for business customers to park. These proposals cut off the lifeline for businesses in the Nightingale area. The council needs to be willing to listen to counterarguments, be amenable to revising its proposals and not ride roughshod over legitimate local opinion. There should be a proper consultation, and last month’s information sessions should not be seen as a ‘tick-box’ exercise to show that they have listened to the public. The changes to parking in Wanstead are due to begin in February. For more information, visit wavidi.co/parking

Me, myself and them Christchurch Green Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Deb Selner has first-hand experience of identity theft. Here, she tells her story and explains how Neighbourhood Watch was able to help other victims

O

ne evening in November I came home to find two letters, each containing a new bank card and both informing me that my application for a new bank account had been accepted. I was free to detach the card, sign it and ‘spend, spend, spend!’ Sadly, it wasn’t an early Christmas present. I had neither opened these accounts nor did I have any money in the accounts to spend. Fortunately for me, a letter had also arrived from the Royal Bank of Scotland fraud department warning me that someone had applied for a credit card in my name. After checking the RBS fraud line was legitimate (by ringing my own bank to check the telephone number), I rang RBS, who informed me that my identity was being used and suggested I register with Cifas – a company that works to detect, deter and prevent fraud – to find out how many applications had been made in my name. They advised me to ring each of the banks concerned and ask them to cancel any accounts and credit cards and finally to log onto the police’s Action Fraud website. I immediately rang both banks. The first was excellent and stopped the account straight away. They also advised me to visit Noddle, which is a free credit check website. The second bank, however, invited me to go through ‘my’ security questions. Unfortunately, common sense did not prevail, and the bank employee informed me that as I couldn’t verify my mother’s correct maiden name he could no longer take me through security to cancel the fraudulent account – yes, really! I then rang 101 to inform the police and check if I had to register the fraud with them, but they advised me to put the details on Action Fraud and kindly offered to send an officer to

see me the next day to talk through what had happened. As a Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, I informed all of my neighbours by email and by sharing this information was contacted by two others who told me the same was happening to them. The RBS fraud team were correct, as in the course of the next five days I received letters and debit cards from six other banks and four new credit cards. I spent several evenings ringing up each bank and cancelling everything. The police officer informed me that these bank scams are usually reserved for multi-use letterboxes. He also said that sometimes the postman would be accosted and his mail stolen, or that criminals would stuff letterboxes with newspapers in order to intercept the mail. I can’t help thinking that it would be prudent for banks to send a letter verifying an account before opening it and printing a debit card, therefore saving themselves time and money and, of course, stopping the thieves in their tracks. To register with the various services mentioned, visit noddle.co.uk, cifas.org.uk and actionfraud.police.uk. For more information on Redbridge NWH, visit redbridgenhw.info

Wonderful lives Carole Edrich, author of our Angels articles, has big plans to help others find and praise their own community heroes and needs your support to make it happen

H

ow would you like a top-of-therange Sauvignon Blanc, a hamper of goodies, a meal for two with drinks or a cheese platter for a pound? How about a bottle of bubbly, a wine voucher, an expensive exotic candle or a surprise gift for the same amount? All the above are gifts in our Angel raffle donated by a range of local businesses, including the Wanstead Village Directory, Majestic Wine Warehouse, The Larder, Sumo Fresh, The Cuckfield, Wanstead Art Shop and Le Petit corner. That’s not all that is on offer: Zoology has donated a £20 voucher and Redken Blond Idol hair products; Images In Frames, Wanstead Fish and Azzura have each donated £15 vouchers; Wanstead Beauty Clinic has donated a £10 voucher; and Wanstead Pharmacy has donated a large bag of products and two beauty bags of surprise gifts will come from The Closet and another great set of prizes from an anonymous donor. It’s for a good cause. It’s to help me help people in the communities that surround Wanstead to read about their local heroes in the same way we do. I want to teach local kids and young adults how to find their own local Angels, write about them and photograph them too. Finding Angels can be as simple as asking in local shops or talking to family, and it leads to a greater level of communication between people of all generations. It’s great to see your name in print and individuals who have done wonderful, selfless things acknowledged. This is nice for them and great for the communities involved. If we – and the kids I hope to work with – become more aware of just how many good people surround us, and in so doing,

The Angels in Wanstead series began life as a calendar

become implicitly aware that a good deed or thoughtful act, however tiny, can have huge benefits to everyone around, then this must surely benefit all our communities further and counter the thoughtlessness that seems to pervade peoples’ behaviour more and more. I plan to work with dancers, local schools and youth clubs, training and mentoring them where appropriate and helping them to find, interview and photograph their own local heroes. I’ll get their work published, too. This needs money, so I am starting with this local raffle. To make it more exciting our very own Pearly Queen, Doreen Golding, has agreed to make the draw, which will take place between 5.30pm and 6pm on Saturday 21 January at The Manor House, Wanstead. Raffle tickets (priced £1 each or five for £4) are available from a range of local shops. Plan your change Angela Reid was told she was overweight as a young child. After trying numerous diets throughout adult life, she finally found success with the Cambridge Weight Plan and now educates others at Wanstead House

I

was made aware that I was overweight just after Christmas 1979 when I was asked if I had eaten too much turkey. I was 10 years old! In my early teens, I was put on salad lunches at school, and there began my unhealthy relationship with food. I was deprived of what I liked to eat at school and would, therefore, overeat whenever I could. Being a teenager, I soon wanted to keep up with all the latest fashion trends and started dieting so clothes would fit. This was always short-lived and before I knew it I had fallen into the dreaded practice of yo-yo dieting. I dieted like this for many years until the age of 29, when after a break-up I decided enough was enough, and it was time to accept who I was. I embraced my curves and entered a big and beautiful competition where I made it into the final. Fast forward 13 years to 2011. I remarried (my husband saw me on stage at the show!) and now have three children. I was at my heaviest, but very happy apart from a constant backache and knee ache caused by my excess weight. I’m a dancer, not a professional one, but it is my passion and I was finding dancing increasingly difficult. One evening, whilst complaining as usual about my aches and pains, my five-year-old said: “Mummy, if your weight fit your height maybe your back wouldn’t hurt!” Out of the mouth of babes, eh! I decided there and then that I was going to make a change. I had tried every diet going, apart from Cambridge Weight Plan, as I thought the plan was liquid only and I really wasn’t interested in that. I was, however, desperate and with no

other diets left to try, I felt I had no option but to give it a go. I found the plan surprisingly easy after the first few days. There were lots of choices, including porridges, shakes, soups, bars and meals, such as spaghetti bolognese, macaroni cheese and rice dishes, so not just liquids after all. Six months later I had gone from a size 22 to a size 10. I reached my goal in May 2012, and by October 2012 I had been accredited as a Cambridge Weight Plan Independent Consultant. I made the decision to become a consultant simply because I could not keep this plan to myself. I am passionate and completely committed to helping others achieve their weight loss goals. I have been there and done it; I know all the ups and downs and I understand the importance of a good coach. Four years later, I am still maintaining a healthy weight. Angela runs Cambridge Weight Plan sessions every Wednesday from 11am to 1pm at Wanstead. For more information, call 07951 270 886

The New

Wilderness But where was the previous Wilderness? The history of Wanstead’s Eton Manor Rugby Club and its predecessor, the Eton Manor Boys’ Club, and the lifelong impact that had on its members is a fascinating story, says the club’s Youth Chairman David Tulip

I

n 1908 a philanthropically-minded group of Old Etonians: Arthur Villiers, Gerald Wellesley, Alfred Wagg and Sir Edward Cadogan founded the Eton Manor Boys’ Club (EMBC) as a ‘mission’ around Hackney Wick with a view to raising the standards for the East End’s ‘poor’. How times have changed! On the fringes of London’s notoriously deprived East End, EMBC members were able to try out all kinds of sports and leisure activities. In comfortable surroundings, they enjoyed amateur dramatics, debating, drawing, first aid, squash, tennis, football, cricket, rugby, billiards, table tennis, photography, badminton, athletics, rifle shooting and boxing. Indeed, it took 92 years until boxer Nicola Adams, from

Leeds, did in Rio in 2016 what Eton Manor boy Harry Mallin achieved in 1924 – retained an Olympic boxing crown. Harry was a middleweight boxer who won gold in 1920 and 1924. He also achieved the distinction of being the first British television sports commentator, when he gave commentary on two boxing matches broadcast by the BBC from Alexandra Palace in 1937. Although the Eton Manor Boys’ Club officially closed in 1967, many members are still in contact with one another today and all acknowledge

January 2017 the profound impact EMBC had on their lives. “Our lives would’ve been very different had we not been in the club, so I count myself lucky… because when I joined in 1946 there weren’t the opportunities [there are today]… I shall be forever grateful,” said one former member. The rules stated that boys had to join between the ages of 14 and 16. However, once admitted as members, the commitment might last a lifetime. An affiliated Eton Manor ‘Old Boys’ Club catered for the over-18s. For a nominal weekly subscription, boys and old boys had free access to everything the EMBC had to offer, both in the purpose-built clubhouse on Riseholme Street, Hackney and on the clubs’ own sports ground, the Wilderness, a vast sporting nirvana developed on 30 acres of waste ground in Leyton in the 1920s. Over the past 20 years, Eton Manor Rugby Club has settled in our midst, together with our historic posts. In 1946, when reforming following the Second World War, the club purchased a set of metal rugby posts. At that time, it was understood to be one of only three sets of metal posts in the UK, the other sets being at Cardiff Arms Park and Murrayfield. With the club’s move to its present Wanstead home, and with the kind permission of the LVRPA, the posts were lifted and reinstalled on the first team pitch at Nutter Lane and are still in use to this day. Today, children from as young as three or four ‘run around’ here on Sunday mornings. Around 400 boys and girls attend, with teams at each age group from under-7s to under-17s inclusive, plus a rapidly growing dedicated girls section at both under-13s and under15s (primary school children play mixed-sex rugby). It’s great to see these youngsters learning teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. We are also

proud to see these young people feeding our senior sides (of which we will soon be running five) and, indeed, a good number of them enjoyed playing at the highest level the club has ever achieved last season when we participated in the national leagues. So although today it is not necessarily so much about helping the poor of London’s East End, the rugby club remains humble whilst quietly striving to raise the standards of our local community through rugby core values, which benefits all ages, ethnicities, beliefs and classes.

Eton Manor Rugby Club is located at The New Wilderness, Nutter Lane, Wanstead, E11 2JA. For more information, call 020 8532 2946 or visit etonmanor.net

20/20 Wanstead vision In 2017 the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the first of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding gives an outline of what the community group has achieved in its two-decade history

I

t’s June 1997. Tony Blair has just been elected prime minister, Bill Clinton is the US president, iPhones haven’t been invented and less than 25% of the UK population has access to the internet. That was when the Wanstead Society was formed out of a grass roots campaign to save Wanstead’s Evergreen Field. At the time of the Wanstead Society’s inception, I was still completing my A levels at Wanstead High. Two decades on and I am now chairman of this important community group. To celebrate our platinum anniversary, here’s a quick look at what we have achieved and what still needs to be done. The Society was formed out of a desire to prevent the High Street’s Evergreen Field from being turned into a block of flats. The field is still empty, so on that score, we have had some success. However, we would still like to see the site used for recreational use or become part of the adjacent park. Our greatest victory has been to lobby for, and secure, the highest planning protection for this site, which means it cannot be built on. But we remain open to anyone who might have ideas of how it can be used. Other projects have included supporting the area’s first art trail, planting trees and raising funds to renovate the children’s playground on Christchurch Green, paying for new bins and benches throughout Wanstead, forming a gardening group lead by Marian Temple that looks after the flower bed’s by Wanstead Station and the Corner House, securing the Corner House – now called the Allan Burgess Centre – as a community site, lobbying the council to improve the public realm and numerous other projects where we have worked with developers to ensure good

quality design for buildings in Wanstead. The list, quite literally, could go on. Much of our bread and butter work continues to be liaising with developers on designs for buildings in the local area. We have never been against redevelopment, but any new buildings must complement the unique character of where we live. In recent years, we have had less success here as planning laws have changed and area and local planning committees have been abolished, along with the Conservation Advisory Panel. It’s much more difficult to protect what we have now than it was 20 years ago. But we hope we can still campaign for good building design and remain open to working with any developer. As a resident of 33 years, it has been a joy to grow up and live in Wanstead. My aim as chair of the Society is that other families will still be enjoying Wanstead as a good place to live over the next 20 years. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation that works to protect, preserve and improve the local area. Membership is £10 per household per year. Visit wavidi.co/ws

Field of history In the third of a series of articles about the history of Snaresbrook Football Club, Millicent Brown explores how loyalty and allegiance to the club – based on Wanstead’s Nutter Field – never wanes

T

he Nutter Field was donated to Wanstead residents almost 100 years ago – a kind act enabling generations of sports fans to enjoy football, cricket, tennis and bowls. And astonishingly, many players who started their football careers as young teenagers in the club’s early days still remain, these days working as officials, helpers or attending as spectators. What’s more, most who started in a youth side formed in the 1990s now make up the current adult team. Treasurer Keith Lloyd, now 72, who joined as an 18-year-old football enthusiast years ago, said: “My first season started in 1962 after I saw an advertisement in the Ilford Recorder for men to play for a team then known as RAFARNO. I just turned up one day at the Nutter Field and started playing. A lot of former Royal Air Force, Army and Naval officers were already here and were by then veterans. We played in local leagues, mainly the Ilford and Manor Park leagues. The team changed its name the following season, in 1963.” Even current chairman John Sankey, 84, who still lives locally, joined as a seasoned professional after moving from Liverpool in 1962 and is still a regular spectator. He said: “I have always loved it here. I have seen all the changes and watched the club form and transform. I still really enjoy coming down here and have simply loved watching it change from a shed to a double garage and now a proper brick-built building.” The brick-built clubhouse was finished by 1987. It was designed by architect Jim Norris and built by current team manager Paul Staniford, now 57, who recently won Essex Olympian Football League Linesman of the Year 2016.

Back row from left: former player Peter Howard; current players Drew Barbier and Mitchell Collymore; loyal supporter Phil Hicks; and current players Jack Sim and Jamie Doyle. Front row from left: chairman John Sankey and team manager Paul Staniford

Paul said: “I joined the club as a 17-yearold and became secretary in 1988, a post I am pleased and proud to have held continuously to the present day. I have also been first team manager, second team manager and youth team manager at various points throughout my Snaresbrook career.” Snaresbrook FC facts On 10 July 1950, it was agreed that a donation of one pound and one shilling be granted to the Leytonstone and District League Benevolent Fund. At around the same time, the cost of a full team of football shirts and a set of goal nets came to just £25 and the prize in the Christmas draw was a chicken, bottles of whisky, gin and sherry and 200 cigarettes. In the summer of 1990, the existing lawnmower was reported to be on its last legs and needed replacing. These days a tractor turns up to tend to the grass. Snaresbrook Football Club compete in the Prokit Essex Olympian Football League. Follow them on Twitter @snaresbrookfc

Intrepid Strider Poet Jane Grell presents Intrepid Strider, an ode to 93-year-old Stanley Silburn, the former leader of a local walking group and an oral historian for Wanstead and the surrounding area

F

or the past 12 years, 93-year-old Stanley led the Newham Striders, a walking group in Wanstead Park. Though in later life he moved to East Ham, he’s nonetheless an oral historian for this area, which is what made him such a superb walk leader. Following my interviews with this man of immense interest – published in the previous four issues – we discovered Stanley’s granddad inspired in him a great affection for people and places, something that is true to this day. From a vehicle mechanic in the army to a walking guide for the 2012 Olympics, I now give you Stanley, the Intrepid Strider. Ageing is our human destiny, inevitable as night follows day Ruthless as the sun’s siphoning of the morning dew It makes us fragile as moonbeams on a midnight lake Ageing is for many, a time when aches and pains sneak up to replace the cocky countenance of youth with creaky frame, growing doubts and vague apprehensions Yet for some, ageing is an exquisite art, shaped from the eclectic mix of jetsam and flotsam, picked up along the way It is the intriguing juncture, where experience and innocence hold hands giving permission to simply stand and stare that coveted position where you don’t have to give a damn if you don’t care to I have a friend named Stanley, full of the joys of spring, even in winter

You’ll strive to keep up with his strides if only to catch every word of his many stories tumbling out with such contagious enthusiasm Now you glimpse the mechanical engineer in some trench in Italy now the ruddy-cheeked paper boy on his five am round steering his bicycle through the foggy streets of London and around the eerie shadows of gas light The ultimate good companion, music connoisseur, prodigious reader raconteur par excellence, funny, meticulous, orderly, mischievous clock-maker, helpful knight youthful nonagenarian, indefatiguable lover of life Whoever said ‘age is but a number’, I suspect, must have met Stanley I know I’m glad I have The Newham Striders meet on Saturdays at 9am near St Mary’s Church, Wanstead. Angel update Carole Edrich gives another update on some of the community heroes featured in our long-running Angels series of articles and asks any missing to get in touch

L

ast month I was sure I could write about all the other Angels I’ve covered in a few hundred words and give it to the editor to print before the deadline. But it’s not that simple because people are so busy that time of year, particularly those who give their time to charity. So, here’s a quick round-up of what some of the other Angels you’ve read about have got up to recently. I’ll update you on the rest when I can. Ruth Huntman now also works with the British Heart Foundation, where she helps raise awareness of heart disease. She does this by finding and interviewing people who make good case studies and placing their stories in the national press. She also performed in Made in Dagenham at the Kenneth More Theatre. Diana Korchien is as active as ever and does too much to list it all here. As a member of Transition Leytonstone, she runs a monthly Saturday stall outside Matalan. This ‘Best Before Stall’ stocks an ever-changing selection of packaged foods from spices to rices, including puddings, preserves, pasta, drinks, crisps, teas and chocolates. While all of these foods are past their best before date, they are perfectly OK, legal to be offered for sale and excellent value. Pop over if you’d like to volunteer because they’d love to be able to hold it every Saturday. Diana also secured an exclusive pre-release screening of Seed: The Untold Story at Leytonstone Library. Ann Williams and Diana Korchien both related the sad news that the Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth have ceased operations. Ann is now much more involved in the local Green Party (Waltham Forest and Redbridge Branch), where she is part of the

media team (which is led by none other than Diana). Ann’s role involves writing and editing letters for the local press and regularly scanning the local papers for items of interest, which she then writes up into a weekly report for Friends of the Earth members. This feeds into their campaign team, thereby helping them to choose causes for which they can campaign. Ann is also still writing and researching in the field of medieval and Anglo-Saxon history, has three papers awaiting publication, and more to come. Since writing recipes and a piece on scrumping for the Wanstead Village Directory, Mike Edwards has organised a misty, autumnal five-hour walk through Epping Forest and a Blues Brothers themed evening at The Wanstead Tap. He has also given home-made chutneys and preserves for Christmas gifts and sold more copies of his book Shelf Life in local Christmas markets. Hilary Douse is talking about arranging another litter run and has been busy working with others on the Leytonstone Art Trail and on exhibitions and meetings with Leytonstone’s wonderful art group, the Creative Bloc. I also saw that the Wild

Goose Bakery in Leytonstone has been awarded special thanks for its support of Sally’s Kitchen, which runs a food bank and pop-up community café. In her role as Pearly Queen, Doreen Golding has carried on raising money for good causes, including being on X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. She goes collecting in London and the West End quite regularly with colleagues (and jokes that it is begging) and has agreed to draw the winners for our Angels raffle this month. Wanstead Community Gardeners’ guerrilla gardening campaign, led by Marian Temple, is still going strong as you can see even this late in the season (especially on the High Street and by the station). Frank Charles is slowly achieving his bucket list wish of turning his annual Christmas Gift Appeal (the 13th annual giving was on 20 December) into a roundthe-year present-giving event for children in hospitals and hospices. It’s hard to find time at Christmas and harder still to look up contacts who are as busy as me when we’re all trying to fit our community work in with everything else that must be done. So, if you’ve been one of our Angels and you’ve not been listed, please do get in touch. Tell me what you’re doing and I’ll find a way to tell the other people from our wonderful community. Jazz, up the road Wanstead resident and drummer Clive Fenner invites you to join him and other members of the East Side Jazz Club for their weekly performances, just up the road in Leytonstone

Although we are based in Leytonstone, the club started through Wanstead connections, and myself and many of the people who help to keep it going live in Wanstead. Our performers are top international musicians but the club itself has become, for many people, a community event that is not there to make a profit. Every Tuesday we have a regular audience of 40 to 50 people – it is their Tuesday night commitment where they meet with friends, have a good pint or glass of wine and hear some fantastic music, and we are happy to welcome new faces. The club has been running in various locations since around 1994, but our current venue (in the Leytonstone and District Ex-Servicemen’s Club) is the best we have had. The function room has recently been decorated and the stage is adorned with flowers and twinkling lights. There are always at least two real ales on pump and the bar staff are friendly. It’s always hard to tell people who are not into jazz just how good our concerts are. If you are not in the jazz world there are no reference points, so you end up saying that we have performers who play with Jamie Cullum, Van Morrison and Sting, who sell out Carnegie Hall, who back Eric Clapton one night and

n thinking about how I could tell you about the East Side Jazz Club, I remembered this recent Facebook post we received: “Thanks for another great night’s entertainment. As a club, you offer pretty much all anyone could ask for: great and varied music, friendly patrons and reasonably priced beers and spirits. Well worth the trek over from deepest, darkest Camberwell. Keep up the great work, guys!“ I think that says a lot about the club and the sort of following we have.

play at the club the next, and who play in a big band featuring the top session players in England and abroad. One of our policies has always been to make our performances as varied as possible – we’ve had a Cuban music night with maestro violinist Omar Puente, an RnB all-stars night featuring members of the Jools Holland RnB Orchestra and a Liane Carroll night, which is all you can call a night with the uniquely talented Liane Carroll. There is little jazz in the mainstream media nowadays, so people have little experience of it and are often quick to tell you that they “don’t like jazz“, but if they come and see John Etheridge shredding the fretboard or Annie Whitehead with her unique mix of township, ska and original compositions, I guarantee they will change their minds and then, hopefully, they will come back to explore our other great performers. East Side Jazz Club performances take place every Tuesday from 8.30pm upstairs in Leytonstone and District Ex-Servicemen’s Club, 2 Harvey Road, Leytonstone, E11 3DB (behind the Red Lion pub). Growing project Mark McKee established the beginnings of Aldersbrook Farmers’ Market at the end of 2016. Now, he is looking for help to grow this community-building project

T

he concept for Aldersbrook Farmers’ Market was a community-focused food market and was inspired by my wife, Julie. She’s in the ideas department and I like to make ideas happen! We love living in Aldersbrook but it can be a bit of an island, even when within walking distance of Wanstead, Forest Gate and Leytonstone. There are markets in all those locations but nothing in our neighbourhood. We also found that unless you are dropping kids off at Aldersbrook Primary School or are a regular dog walker, there aren’t too many opportunities to meet neighbours. Being able to offer something sociable and open to all ages was paramount to us. We recruited a few friends in the neighbourhood who run cafés and make cakes to try it out on a small scale and see if people would want to come and visit. Word started to spread quite quickly on Facebook and that was when we had Corner Café in Forest Gate make contact to see if they could sell jams, chutneys and the like. At that point, I knew we were tapping into a pent-up demand that could be the beginnings of a food market and community hub. Our first market was at the end of October outside the hall at Aldersbrook Baptist Church, and the immediate feedback from people was that it was great to have something to come along to on a Saturday morning instead of travelling out of Aldersbrook to get food. I sold some fruit and vegetables too, and it was incredible how quickly the produce flew off the tables. The highlight for me and my fellow stallholders was to see people simply enjoying hanging out, sipping their coffee (thanks to neighbour Paul Unsworth, who runs Kahaila, a not-for-profit cafe on Brick Lane) and chatting.

Mark McKee

People were saying how much they enjoyed the relaxed, sociable nature of the market. After such a positive start, and with autumn turning into winter, we followed this up with a Christmas-themed farmers’ market. We booked Aldersbrook Bowls Club so that we could have the market indoors. The second time around we had more stalls and a wider variety of sweet and savoury food available. Wanstead Park Preschool also provided kids’ craft activities. My hope for the new year is to run the market on a monthly basis, so I’m looking for a couple more people to help me in this venture as my day job as an IT consultant is starting to make more demands on my time. I am confident, however, that this market will continue to bring something that meets a need in our community. For more information on future market dates, visit aldersbrookfarmers.com

Clean or costly break

Jonathan Diamond, a partner and the head of family law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explains the importance of a Consent Order when seeking a divorce. Your future wealth could be at risk without one

T

he number of people asking the courts for financial orders after their divorces have been finalised increased significantly over the past two years. Rising asset values, such as property, business or shares, may have partly motivated more divorced people to seek a better deal from their former spouse. The high-profile case in which Kathleen Wyatt won the right to seek money from her ex-husband Dale Vince, founder of green energy company Ecotricity, 30 years after their divorce, has also encouraged more people to return to the courts in pursuit of settlements. Kathleen Wyatt and Dale Vince married in 1981. They separated in the mid-1980s and in 1992 completed a divorce, obtaining a Decree Absolute, leaving them both free to remarry, which Mr Vince did in 2006. However, neither party took steps to end the financial claims they had against each other arising from their marriage. Kathleen Wyatt did not remarry, and in 2011 she began court proceedings for a £1.9m share of Dale Vince’s assets. During the couple’s relationship, the pair lived as New Age travellers. They had very little money, even by the time of their separation. They did have children, who remained in the primary care of their mother. Some years after they separated, Dale Vince launched the company Ecotricity, which supplies energy to more than 100,000 customers and has made Mr Vince very wealthy. At the time of the trial, his company was valued at £57 million. Kathleen Wyatt’s application was initially struck out by the courts for being an abuse of process. She was told that she had no right to make a claim given the length of time since the couple’s divorce and the fact that her ex-husband’s wealth was all built-up after

their marriage ended. After a series of appeals, the case ended up before the Supreme Court. In March 2015 they concluded that the lower court had been wrong to dismiss her claim. Ms Wyatt’s application was allowed to progress, and in 2016 the parties eventually came to an agreement that Ms Wyatt would receive £300,000 plus her costs. The Supreme Court’s ruling should stand as a stark warning to anyone who is thinking about completing a divorce without also putting in place a court-approved financial agreement. It is vital you seek legal advice about the financial aspects of your separation at the time you divorce. Deciding not to do this because the assets you have are limited is no longer an option for anyone who wants to protect their potential future wealth. The financial agreement (known as a Consent Order) addresses the claims a married couple has against each other and sets out how and when these claims should be brought to an end. What most divorcing people want is a clean break between them, and a Consent Order is usually the best way to achieve this. Good shot! Football photographer and lifelong Wanstead resident Tim Reder has recently published two books about West Ham United and Leyton Orient. In the second of a series of articles, Tim reflects on the glimpses into history his photos offer

M

y first project as a football history photographer was to make a record of Orient, who by the mid-1980s I had already supported for getting on 20 years. The team was not as strong as it had been for many of those years, nor the crowds as large, but little else had changed. Players, brilliant and not so brilliant, had come and gone without the club losing either its unique identity or its generic representation of football clubs of that time. The stadium was substantially the same as when I first attended games, so anyone entering the ground would have had much the same experiences as supporters of previous generations. Therefore, taking photographs at a random point in the club’s history was both recording the present and, to a degree, the past. I photographed behind the scenes to capture aspects not typically seen by fans, but the Orient of my own experiences formed the basis of the project. So I photographed the stadium at which I had attended so many matches and found so much joy and at least an equal amount of disappointment, the fans and events and action on and off the pitch. I undertook photographing supporters, staff

and players outside the ground. The photos show not only the people involved at that time but what they wore and the pictures made them part of a permanent record for future generations. Having made the study of Orient, it seemed natural to carry out a similar project at West Ham next where I had also seen hundreds of matches since the age of seven, mainly on the north and south bank terraces behind the goals. As with Orient’s Brisbane Road ground, where only one of the original stands is extant, the stands at Upton Park were demolished in the years following the project. Those developments and West Ham’s subsequent move to the Olympic Stadium mean the photographs not only bring back memories for older supporters but show younger fans what their clubs were like not so long ago. Come on you O’s: Leyton Orient 1985–89 and The Hammers: a Photographic Study of West Ham United 1988–90 by Tim Reder are available for £15.99 each (plus £4 postage) from timrederphotography.com

Angels Pat Hayday

W

hen I popped into Biyoni to see if I could write about its owner Pat Hayday and explained about the Angels column, her stylists were very protective of her. Even so, one said: “She might not want to talk to you, and if she does she’ll never tell you everything she does for others because she does so much.” Another said jokingly: “The biggest thing she does is employ me!” with a cheerfully cheeky grin. I’ve always believed that the way staff behave when the boss isn’t around tells a lot about how well they are treated, so I was very impressed. Luckily, Pat, who was particularly busy when I visited (possibly because it was so close to Christmas) had time and was up for this interview, too. Pat is a fourth-generation Wansteadian and her great-grandmother went to the local church school. Her reminiscences about the old Wanstead High Street are fascinating, and it’s wonderful to hear how invested she still is in the area, its people and culture. She and her husband celebrated the 10th anniversary of their business on 3 December and will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of its rebranding this year. A teacher at the time (she is still involved in teaching), she explained: To advertise, please call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

January 2017

71

“Me being me, I dived right in. I have always believed in investing in people. We changed the atmosphere, trained and treated staff differently. I am very proud to say that three of those people are still with us now.” Pat is justifiably proud of the business she has grown. Customer service is vital, and they believe it is important to give a lot back to the community and to their clients in general. Their last fundraising event (the second Big Hair Do they’ve done) was to raise money for the premature baby unit at Whipps Cross Hospital, and it sounds like it went very well. This a networking charity event and Pat thinks they will probably do it again. Before that, they ran a Girls’ Night In where clients and their friends were invited for tips on styling, fashion and more. Pat particularly likes this because it gives the staff an opportunity to be social and to chat with their clients in a way that doesn’t happen in the normal course of business. When one of their regulars went to hospital, Pat sent a stylist there to do her hair (consider the travel time, especially this time of year, and you’ll understand that is a huge thing to do). They’ve also sponsored a night or two each year with the Friends of St Mary’s with Christ Church. Pat (who was baptised there) is currently supporting the renovation of a recently discovered valuable piece of art in the church. Biyoni has also run raffles, donated prizes to local schools for fundraising and raised money for Haven House and Wanstead Playground. Pat, who seems to prefer cancer charities, told me how proud she was of staff who worked backstage at London Fashion Week, how great her clients are and of a particularly memorable moment when a nine-year-old girl came in to have her hair cut off for the Princess Charity. I got the impression that had we been able to spend more time talking, I’d have discovered she does much more. I know they’ve sponsored an event for the Friends of St Mary’s with Christ Church this month and I know they are planning something big for the 10th anniversary of the rebranded salon. I also know that aspects of the ‘funny old journey’ of Pat’s teaching, hairdressing and charitable life are barely midway through.

In the 32nd of a series of articles profiling community heroes, photojournalist and Wanstead resident Carole Edrich introduces us to Pat Hayday

Fact and fiction Ahead of a talk for the Wanstead Park Women’s Club about Agatha Christie, Nick Dobson offers some insight into the life of the Queen of Crime, whose story has all the twists and turns of a work of fiction

O

ne hundred years ago, as British soldiers struggled to make progress on the Western Front, 30-year-old Agatha Christie was working as a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse in Torquay. Agatha, who had written several short stories and a novel – all rejected by publishers – decided to try her hand at a crime mystery novel. Wanting a detective different to any other in the genre and noting the many Belgians in the south of England – refugees from the German invasion of their country – Agatha decided that her detective would be a celebrated member of the Belgian police force, a “quaint, dandified little man” named Hercule Poirot. The Mysterious Affair at Styles was its author’s first published novel when it appeared in print in 1920 and Poirot went on to appear in 33 novels and more than 50 short stories. Poirot’s creator was born Agatha Miller on 15 September 1890. She came from an uppermiddle-class background and was raised in Torquay. But despite a very typical English upbringing, the life of Agatha Christie reads as a work of fiction itself. A shy child, Agatha soon displayed a keen imagination and talent in both music and, of course, writing. By her early 20s, her poems regularly appeared in Poetry Review, earning her a guinea a time. A tall and attractive young woman, Agatha received more than one marriage proposal before she accepted a dashing young pilot, army officer Archibald Christie. They married on Christmas Eve 1914 and their daughter Rosalind was born five years later after Archie returned from the war. Then, late in 1926, came the bombshell that derailed Agatha’s life: Archie was in love with another woman and wanted a divorce. Agatha was already suffering stress following the death of her mother Clara earlier that year and Archie’s

infidelity was the final straw. Agatha vanished from their Sunningdale home. Her car was found at Newlands Corner, perched above a chalk quarry, but despite the deployment of over 1,000 police, the author was missing for 10 days until she was discovered under a false name at a Harrogate hotel. To this day, those missing 10 days and what happened during them remain a mystery. Real-life mystery and drama did nothing to stem the flow of fictional mysteries. With Miss Jane Marple proving almost as popular with the public as Poirot, Agatha was a prolific author. She once said: “Oh, I’m an incredible sausage machine, a perfect sausage machine!… I always think it must end soon, then I’m so glad when the next one comes along and it’s not so difficult to think of something new after all.” Agatha, who remarried in 1930, died in 1976 aged 85 and had by then become a Dame, and with over two billion total book sales is the world’s bestselling novelist. Nick’s talk will take place at the Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 30 January from 8pm (visitors: £2). Booking required – call 020 8532 9093
