Welcome... Last month, I used this page to reflect the widespread desire to show solidarity with France following November's terrorist attacks in Paris. In December, the terror threat was felt much closer to home, in Leytonstone. As in France and as in London in 2005 (and as in numerous other cities around the world), local residents here responded with contempt for the attack and solidarity with Leytonstone. The most powerful response, however, came within moments of the event, when a bystander commented: "You ain't no Muslim bruv," which quickly became the top-trending hashtag on Twitter across the UK. It was the perfect riposte to attempts to spread violence in the name of religion and perfectly tapped into the psyche of those who denounce hate. It's not always easy to know what will capture the imagination of a given community of people. If it were, companies wouldn't invest so much time in market research or pay advertising agencies such vast sums of money, and governments wouldn't struggle to come up with popular policies. As with many aspects of life, hindsight can reveal a great deal about how and why people respond in the way they do, whether that be to commercial advertisements, to government legislation or to off-the-cuff remarks that capture the mood of a nation. It's no secret that the strongest messages often come from the simplest of concepts. The Paris for Peace symbol (created by French artist Jean Jullien) was a powerful visual example of this; and now #YouAintNoMuslimBruv is an equally powerful verbal example. With US presidential elections, an Olympic Games and the launching of the world's first space hotel, the year ahead is likely to bring forth more examples of powerful messages. Let us hope any such further entries into this genre come off the back of positive experiences. "Let our New Year's resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word." (Göran Persson, former Swedish Prime Minister).

The club – which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year – will receive £75k to help complete a major refurbishment of their pavilion on Overton Drive, including a new roof. MP's Syria airstrike vote

Crime reduced

Having been given a free vote by his party, the Labour MP for Leyton and Wanstead, John Cryer, voted against military intervention in Syria last month because he believes such action is likely to make things worse. "At some point there may be good arguments for such action, but only on the basis of a truly multi-national, UN force, which should have Arab soldiers as a major component. Even then, it may not be entirely advisable and that's an argument for another day," said John. Visit johncryermp.co.uk

Figures released last month show that the level of crime fell dramatically across Redbridge in 2015. In the last year, burglary dropped by 10%, theft of motor vehicles fell by 22% and violence with injury is down 2%. Detective Chief Superintendent Sue Williams said: "These are excellent figures and show real progress in both the last year and since 2011/12, but we are not complacent and we will continue to strive for more. We have a very strong partnership with the council and through this we've achieved fantastic results."

An exhibition by mixed media artist and Aldersbrook resident Matthew Webber opened at The View in Epping Forest last month. Influenced by maps, aerial photography and the landscape around his home studio, Matthew creates mixed media paintings that are

Flight paths set to be concentrated over Wanstead

A range of events held over the festive season, including raffles, fetes and photographic sessions, added £2,000 to Wanstead Playground Association's coffers. A grotto held in The Nightingale pub raised £1,200, with mince pies donated by Percy Ingle, crafts

courtesy of Creation Station, festive treats from Tesco and gifts sponsored by Petty Son & Prestwich. With £62k raised to date, and news about other grants expected shortly, trustees are now finalising designs with a view to ordering equipment by the end of January.

Retired Police

Handymen

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved a series of major airspace changes that will allow London City Airport to concentrate its flight paths over east London, which will impact Wanstead. The CAA claim the changes, which are due to be

implemented next month, will help to lower fuel use and reduce noise for many. However, the decision follows uproar at the lack of consultation on the proposals in 2014 and campaign group HACAN East are now considering legal action against the CAA.

A banner that was created by a group of artists that came together following last year's Wanstead Art Trail was carried through central London on 29 November as part of the People's March for Climate, Justice and Jobs. The group joined an estimated 60,000

demonstrators to demand action from world leaders at last month's UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Led by local artist Kathy Taylor, each member of the Wanstead group made an image for the banner, illustrating their thoughts about the environment.

The Lib Dem candidate for Mayor of London, Caroline Pidgeon, visited Charlie Brown's Roundabout in South Woodford last month to help collect signatures for a petition calling for improved safety at the busy intersection. "Charlie Brown's Roundabout has been

desperately dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists for far too long. Local people have been… let down badly in the past when promised improvements were shelved," said Councillor Gwyneth Deakins, who launched the petition. Visit wavidi.com/cbrb

Budget consultation

Ancestors' ways of death

Redbridge Council have launched a budget consultation following the Chancellor's Spending Review in November 2015, which has left the council fighting 'an historic financial challenge'. "I need our residents to help us withstand the challenges we face. I am asking you to take part in the budget consultation and tell us… what your key priorities are," said Councillor Jas Athwal. The council needs to save £58m over the next three years, in addition to the £80m saved since 2010. Visit wavidi.com/redbgt

What can our ancestors' deaths tell us about their lives? Family historian Mark Carroll – who has traced his own family back to 1597 – will be exploring this concept at this month's East of London Family History Society meeting. Mark will then consider the top five killers across the centuries and the problems in interpreting causes of death. The talk, which will take place at Wanstead Library on 27 January, will also feature interesting memorial inscriptions from gravestones in local churchyards. Call 020 8554 8414

Bramble clearing in Wanstead Park's Bluebell Wood

Wanstead Quakers hold silent vigil for peace in Leytonstone

Volunteers at work in Wanstead Park last month

The Wren Wildlife Group have begun their annual brambleclearing work in Wanstead Park to ensure that Chalet Wood has the best chance of producing another stunning show of bluebells in April. "We also keep the paths clearly delineated by placing

logs along the sides to discourage people from walking on the foliage, which kills the plants," said group member Gill James. Additional work will be carried out from 10am on Thursdays 7 and 14 January and 11, 18 and 25 February (volunteers welcome). Call 020 8989 4898

Members of the Wanstead Quakers group made a stand for peace at Leytonstone Tube station last month. They stood in silence for an hour, exactly a week after a serious violent attack had taken place there in order to 'bear witness to the conviction that

everyone is diminished by violence against another human being'. "It was an act of solidarity with every person affected by violence, here and all over the world," said group member Kate Green. The Quaker form of worship is based on silent waiting.

Fishmonger, Wanstead

t's 3.50am and here I am, eyeing up fish at Billingsgate Market when I could be fast asleep. What am I doing? Actually, I enjoy my Friday nights here. I love the banter with the traders and I'm made to feel really welcome. I'm proud to say that as far as I know, I'm the first black female fishmonger to have qualified at Billingsgate. Mum has been buying here for 30 years for our big family. As kids we'd all gut and scale the fish at home, and then 12 years ago when I got my driving licence, my mum used to make me drive her here at 5am. I used to get on well with the buying, even getting discounts from some traders. As a child to a Guyanan mum and a Bajan dad in a Catholic family in the Redbridge area, it was always fish on Fridays and religious festivals, and my friends used to come over because Mum cooked fish so well. I loved having friends round so much, after school while our parents were out, we would eat all the ice cream in the house – every day. I had my door key taken away for that – forever! I knuckled down to life in the sixth form, gaining scholarships and qualifications. I tried several routes to potential riches – secretarial, finance and business ownership, including the cleaning company I still own. During a

Following the success of Shelf Life E11:E4:E18, in which Mike Edwards documented venerable local people's lives, he is now looking into the histories of those who have more recently arrived in the area or started businesses here. spell as a full-time mum, I established the Ray Lodge Rascals, setting up community events for kids locally and was praised by the police for reducing anti-social behaviour there by 39%! I'm proud of that, but I wasn't settled. So when I moved to Wanstead in 2010, I decided to train at Billingsgate as a fishmonger, with the intention of selling high-quality fish in local markets. The old traders remembered me, which was touching, and they were very encouraging. Then a neighbour told me about Wanstead Fish opening up. Kevin had stolen a bit of my dream of a local monopoly, but he took me on and has been fantastic, training me up to be a really confident, skilled fishmonger, able to give the boys a run for their money! Fish is my life now and I want to educate my customers about healthy eating and ocean sustainability, and make the experience of buying fish fun, whether it's cooked or fresh. 0000 ...and counting This month sees the start of a year-long wildlife project that aims to document as many species of plants and animals in the Wanstead area as possible. Tim Harris of the organising Wren Wildlife Group reports

M

ost of our efforts will be focused on Wanstead Park and Wanstead Flats, but sightings anywhere in the Manor Park-Forest Gate-Leytonstone-WansteadSnaresbrook area will be included. Here are some of the highlights we expect to see. January: local birders will kick off the New Year before dawn on 1 January with their traditional New Year Bird Race, to find out how many species are on our patch. If we get a spell of cold weather expect some surprise wildfowl – maybe a smew or a goosander or two. We'll be counting them all in Wanstead Park on 17 January. February: generally a quiet month, but towards the end the first wildflowers will begin to bloom. March: on mild, sunny days, the first butterflies should include brimstones and red admirals. Blackthorn comes into flower before its leaves appear and the blue flowers of green alkanet will appear once more. Towards the end of the month the first returning migrant birds appear. April: spring explodes into life. Thousands of migrant birds stream through the area. Leaves appear on trees almost overnight. Hawthorn flowers and the Chalet Wood bluebells add more colour. Reptiles come out of hibernation and damselflies emerge around our lakes and ponds. May: wildflowers are everywhere. Swifts and hobbies finally make it back from Africa. Who will hear the first cuckoo this year? Dragonflies will patrol lakes in Wanstead Park. June: the dawn chorus is at its best early in the month before the birds get down to the serious business of raising families. On warm evenings, bats will be on the wing around Hollow Pond and Alexandra Lake. On sultry, cloudy nights millions of moths will be looking for mates. July: there will be plenty of butterflies and dragonflies on warm, sunny days. Grass snakes love water: you may catch a glimpse of one in Perch Pond or the Ornamental Water.

The smew is a compact diving duck. Small numbers arrive in the UK for winter

August: mid-month, the first southbound wheatears will appear on Wanstead Flats. The bank holiday weekend is usually a good time to look for spotted flycatchers, redstarts, whinchats and warblers. Will we get another wryneck? September: if hobbies have bred locally, now is a good time to see the young falcons feeding. Swallows and martins pass over our area on their way back to Africa. Young bats will join adults to hunt for insects over the lakes of Wanstead Park. October: the visible migration of birds will be at its peak. These will include meadow pipits, skylarks, redwings, fieldfares and other thrushes. A wet autumn will guarantee a good variety of fungi. Look in Bush Wood, but please don't pick! November: if the weather is mild, ragwort, yarrow and dead-nettles may still be flowering. Wildfowl numbers on our lakes and ponds will increase as birds arrive from the continent. December: one of the quietest times of year. Hedgehogs, reptiles and bats will be hibernating. Few plants will be in flower and even fewer insects active. Our area will be preparing itself for another cycle. Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 10th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Amarjit Kudhail recalls how a family portrait session inspired a lifelong hobby

M

© Amarjit Kudhail

y interest in photography started in the late 1970s when my dad's friend, an amateur photographer, came to our house to take some family portraits. I was so intrigued by his camera that it spurred me on to buy my first camera: a basic Yashica. In those days, photography was an expensive hobby, as it still is today, and I funded it with part-time work. We used 35mm film, which took either 12, 24 or 36 exposures, with an ISO of either 100 or 200. Whilst at sixth form college, I joined Forest Gate Camera Club, which had regular guest speakers. One night, we had a couple who showed us projected 3D images of their trips. I still remember one 3D slide of a branch of a cactus tree in a desert – the branch projected out of the screen and everybody, including me, moved their heads to one side to avoid the protruding prickly branch. It was so lifelike we were all shocked. This experience led me to experiment with slide film and I even made my own small light box to view them. After years of thinking about joining a camera club, some 18 months ago I joined Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society. The members were very welcoming. I started to participate in club events and quickly learned how much the digital photographic genre had moved on from the days of film, where my experience of processing was limited to cropping at the printing stage using an enlarger and counting the seconds, both to determine exposure and also while the paper was immersed in chemicals. At the club, I have learned about photographic workflow and software programmes that are available to improve images. I have also discovered the advantages of shooting RAW files and the disadvantages of shooting JPEGs. My future aim is to make more time for this fascinating hobby and to become competent

in using programmes like Adobe Lightroom for organising my images and Photoshop for enhancing them to a standard worthy of appreciation. Wanstead, in business In the second of a series of articles looking at the work of the Wanstead Business Partnership, Darrell Toakley reports on the success of the Christmas campaign and looks to the year ahead

T

The Wanstead alert system is now up and running, with over 15 business in the High Street taking part. This system enables us to keep in touch with each other in real time, meaning we can notify everyone in the group of events or activities that may affect their business or the safety of the High Street, including lost children, shoplifting, forged notes, anything suspicious, intoxicated people, thieves and doorstep sellers. I hope participation in this system will expand over the next four months – any business that would like to join, please get in contact. It is a small but important step in continuing to bring together the diverse businesses of our High Street to help achieve our common goal of improving the area in which we all either live or work. We are also still looking for more businesses and shops to join us at the Wanstead Business Partnership's monthly meetings. We will be moving these meetings to breakfast sessions in the hope this will enable more people to find the time to attend. Again, these meetings are a small but important part of what we do and it is by getting together regularly to discuss issues that we can ensure we bring about positive progress for our High Street, for the shoppers and for our individual businesses. So please, if you run a High Street business in Wanstead and want to join the partnership, do get in touch. We are also looking to create a calendar of events for the year ahead. We hope to have some exciting things planned for the Easter period to

he Wanstead Christmas tree light-up was very successful, with over 400 local residents in attendance. Equally successful was our Christmas 'collect and win' campaign, which required shoppers to collect a stamp on a Christmas-themed postcard each time they shopped at a participating local business. We had a fantastic uptake, with over 1,000 postcards in use in the first 10 days. Remember, you have until 8 January to hand your completed card in for the draw (simply hand it in to any participating shop).

liven up the High Street, but we are also keen to engage local shoppers to find out what ideas and suggestions they may have. So please, if you use Wanstead High Street, do get in contact and tell us what you would like to see. Similarly, if you are a local resident that rarely uses the High Street, I would be equally keen to discover why and find out what can be done to entice you to enjoy the experience of shopping locally. Darrell Toakley is the chair of the Wanstead Business Partnership and the proprietor of Darrell James Travel (46 High Street). Evacuees' stories Wanstead Village Directory

Mike Brown is an authority on the British Home Front of the Second World War. At a Wanstead Park Women's Club event this month he will be revealing stories of evacuation in wartime Britain

I

n the first few days of September 1939, with peace rapidly running out, the British government began the massive task of moving over two million evacuees, mostly schoolchildren, out of Britain's towns and inner cities to safer billets away from the danger of bombs and poison gas. This was a huge undertaking, unlike anything that had ever previously been attempted, involving schools, local councils, health authorities and the newly-formed Women's Voluntary Services. During my presentation this month, I will be using artefacts and the collected reminiscences of hundreds of those who took part to recount the stories of evacuation in Britain up to 1945 from the perspective of the evacuees, those who took them in, their parents and their teachers. I will explore the lessons of the Zeppelin and aircraft raids of the First World War and the post-war plans to protect the civilian population in future wars. Many of these early plans were hastily thought out and did not stand up to any level of scrutiny. Slowly, new plans were made and old ideas improved, but resistance to the idea of another war was so deeply ingrained that even plans for defence were seen as warmongering and all such plans were quietly shelved. In the 1930s, fresh impetus was provided by news reports and cinema newsreels of air raids in the Spanish Civil War and the Sino-Japanese war. The public mood changed and schemes for civilian defence became popular, such as the creation of the ARP department of the Home Office in April 1935. It is not widely remembered that the first attempt at evacuation came at the time of the Munich Crisis in September 1938. The evacuation of London children was planned for early October, but due to the signing of the Munich Agreement, only an early small-scale evacuation took place. This proved most fortuitous. Although it turned out to be something of a fiasco, important

lessons were learnt, leading to fresh plans for the massive evacuation that took place around the outbreak of war, involving travel by road, rail and water. But again, these intricate plans soon went wrong. I will be looking at the experience of everyday evacuee life; sharing homes and schools, learning to understand new accents, eat new food, and for many inner-city evacuees, to understand the countryside. The problems of religion and culture and the all-too-common friction between the locals and the 'vacees' will also be discussed. Finally, I will review various other evacuations, including 'seavacuation' to Canada and the USA, and evacuation into Britain from the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. I will finish with a look at the return home in 1945 and at some of the many and complex problems thrown up by it. Mike's talk for the Wanstead Park Women's Club will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 25 January from 8pm (visitors: £1). For more information, call 020 8532 9093

keeping spaces open Paul Thomson, the City of London Corporation's Superintendent at Epping Forest, reports on the Open Spaces Bill, which is scheduled to be debated in parliament this month

E

pping Forest holds a special place in the hearts of many. It is an important ancient woodland internationally, nationally and, of course, locally. The City of London Corporation saved Epping Forest with the implementation of the Epping Forest Act of 1878 and the Corporation has proudly and diligently continued their role as Conservators of Epping Forest for the last 137 years. The management of Epping Forest and its 4.2 million visitors each year is achieved at a significant cost to the City of London Corporation's philanthropic funding. Last year, £5,389,000 was spent maintaining the forest, with very little call on taxpayers. Any income that is generated from Epping Forest is reinvested directly back into the running of the forest. The costs of managing London's largest open space continue to escalate. Sadly, there are many negative impacts on the forest that present new challenges, such as fly-tipping and emerging tree diseases. It is the City of London Corporation's duty to look at ways to meet such challenges and to ensure that Epping Forest continues to be conserved and protected, now and for future generations. This sometimes requires minor changes to the Epping Forest Act of 1878. As such, there is a current proposal, the Open Spaces Bill, to ask parliament for additional legislation to help regulate and maintain the City of London Corporation's 11,000 acres of green spaces. The bill's main purposes are: zz To update the City of London's management powers. These would cover matters such as the management of vegetation and the installation of utilities infrastructure. zz To strengthen its enforcement powers to deal with anti-social behaviour. The main proposal is to enable us to give Fixed Penalty Notices to people who breach the byelaws or commit other minor offences such as littering.

Warren Pond in Chingford, Epping Forest

zz To provide greater opportunity to generate income to be reinvested back into the running of our green spaces. Our open spaces are currently used for a variety of events, such as weddings, recitals and art shows, and we would like to provide a clear formal basis for them. If the legislation is passed, full consultation will take place in order to draw up policies as to the type and frequency of events that may be permitted. Contrary to local reporting of recent months, the bill does not relate to car parking charges. The City of London Corporation has had the ability to charge for parking under the Act for many years and this is something that may be proposed at a later date. By bringing the laws governing Epping Forest up-to-date, the City of London Corporation will ensure it is able to manage this important woodland more effectively, and crucially, to safeguard its future for many years to come. Without due care Emma Clements, a partner in the criminal law department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, takes a look at some of the issues surrounding Road Traffic Act legislation

R

oad traffic law can be complex and highly technical. The importance of a driving conviction should not be underestimated when a person is at risk of losing their driving licence or even, in the most serious cases, their liberty. Obtaining legal advice can be useful to steer a person through what can be the muddy waters of Road Traffic Act legislation. One may ask the question: is the loss of a driving licence really such a big deal? The answer is that it can be. Loss of a driving licence may have the knock-on effect of loss of employment, which may in turn lead to being unable to make mortgage payments and ultimately, perhaps, a breakdown of relationships. So what seems like a relatively minor criminal offence could have serious implications for an individual. Consider the effect of a motoring conviction upon a self-employed businessman such as a jobbing tradesman. To him, retaining his driving licence is crucial. How else will he carry the tools of his trade if he can no longer drive his van? He may wish to argue that a disqualification would cause him 'exceptional hardship', given the effect that losing his licence would have upon his livelihood and consequently, his personal life. Even where this is obviously the case, courts rarely show leniency in sentencing. Although most road traffic offences are relatively minor, for most people it is their only experience of the criminal justice system. However, the government views prosecution of these offences as an important part of maintaining road safety and protecting the public. Road traffic law raises many issues. A unique feature is that many of these issues do not come into play until they are raised by the defence. In particular, speeding and road signage are areas where technical points can be challenged. Also, with advances in technology and an increase in detection equipment, there is a greater need for specialist knowledge and technical expertise.

There are a wide range of scenarios that can lead to an allegation of wrongdoing. For example, a driver eating a packet of crisps at the wheel or an overtaking manoeuvre that is a little too close for comfort to a nearby pedestrian. Both can lead to a charge of driving without due care and attention. The Crown Prosecution Service must prove that the driving fell below the standard of a competent and careful driver. The court will look at the particular circumstances of each case when deciding whether that person is guilty. With the introduction of legislation, such as the ban on using a mobile phone whilst driving, the likelihood of a person being affected by these laws increases. It is important to note that some terms, for example 'using a mobile phone', may have wider meaning and a different definition in law than in our everyday use. So, being issued with a fixed penalty notice and receiving a mandatory fine and three penalty points can end up being one very expensive telephone call. For more information on the Road Traffic Act, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000

It's all about Catherine In the third of a series of articles exploring the life of Wanstead House heiress Catherine Tylney Long, local historian Geraldine Roberts demonstrates how Catherine was a shrewd businesswoman

I

Catherine's situation was unprecedented. She lived in an era when women were rarely involved in the cut and thrust of business, particularly on such a large scale. She was similar to Karen Brady, 'the first lady of football' – a beacon in a world dominated by men. With no standard to follow, Catherine had to develop her own management style. She resolved to always conduct herself with grace but, 'establish that character of a Lady of business… be resolute – be firm.' From a young age, Catherine was aware that she would be a role model for other women in business. As a popular celebrity, she was constantly in the public eye, so it was imperative to create the right impression. Her friend Dr Barry commended her approach insisting: "There may be those who cast reflections upon the vulgarity of it… but the more valuable part of society will ever applaud it." The public were impressed as Catherine embraced her role as 'a Lady of business', conducting a full audit of all her assets, and systematically working through the documentation. Most judiciously, she ordered maps of all her estates, showing the various tenancies and holdings, along with ratable values. This type of mapping was a relatively new innovation and the sheer scale of the task must have been daunting. But she was determined to rise to the challenge, demonstrating that she was sharp and forward-thinking. Catherine proved herself to be a shrewd businesswoman, who drove a hard bargain,

The Repository of arts, literature, commerce, manufactures, fashions and politics By Rudolph Ackermann (1809)

n 1810, 21-year-old Catherine inherited a massive property empire, which included 23,000 acres of land, six stately homes and hundreds of tenancies spread over four counties. The pressure was immense as the young heiress immersed herself at the sharp end of business, efficiently dealing with disgruntled tenants, unscrupulous suppliers, overbearing trustees and even a sinister blackmailer.

Catherine inherited Wanstead House at the age of 21

haggling over bills and renegotiating tenures. But she was also a compassionate landlord who reduced rents in Wiltshire, rather than evict impoverished tenants and make families homeless. Although Catherine managed her affairs admirably, she was aware that the moment she married she could lose her power. The law of the time stipulated that all her income and assets would automatically pass into the control of her husband. For this reason, some women chose to remain single, to retain their independence. But Catherine did not have this luxury, because it was her duty to marry and produce heirs. Being a strong, modern, independent woman, Catherine refused a marriage of convenience. Filled with hopes and dreams for the future, she chose to marry for love, genuinely believing that her assets would be secure. After all, she had laid solid groundwork for success, conducting audits and mapping out her estates. What could possibly go wrong…? Cycling and the law PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team urges local cyclists and other road users to be safe and to abide by the Highway Code

B

Be sure to wear appropriate clothing that is light or fluorescent, in order to help other road users see you. Additional reflectors are also good to ensure you stand out. Avoid wearing clothing that might get tangled as you ride or block your lights. Bells are not a legal requirement, but something that makes a noise to alert other road users is recommended. A cycle helmet is essential and could mean the difference between walking away from a crash or never walking again. Lights are not only good to help you to be seen at night, they are also the law. You must have a white front light and a red rear light. Not having them could result in a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice. Bikes must also be fitted with a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors. If you wish to cycle during the hours of darkness, then please comply with these lawful requirements as they are in place for the safety of all road users, including you. It is against the law for cyclists to ride on the pavement, and people over the age of 16 years will be stopped by an officer and could be issued with a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice. For those under the age of 16 years, we would ask you to show courtesy to pedestrians and walk your bike in busy areas. Most bus lanes can be used by cyclists, but please remember to never undertake a bus and to watch out for passengers boarding and getting off of buses. Vehicles must not park or drive in a mandatory cycle lane that is marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. The same goes for advisory cycle lanes that are marked by a broken white line, unless it is unavoidable. Please obey all traffic signs and traffic lights, as per the Highway Code. When the light is red,

ikes are becoming increasingly popular as a means of commuting and are a great way to keep fit. But it is vital that cyclists are aware of the law and how to keep themselves and other road users safe – they must obey the Highway Code.

stop. Some junctions have an advanced stop line ahead of other traffic for bikes. Cyclists are not allowed to carry a passenger unless the bike has been adapted or built for more than one person, for example, a correctly fitted child seat or a tandem. Unfortunately, this does not include BMX 'stunt pegs'. The rules of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs apply to cyclists, as do speeding rules. How this would be dealt with differs from driving a vehicle, but the outcome will still be a hefty fine and possibly a criminal record. Additional cycling safety: keep both hands on the handlebars, except when changing gear or signalling; keep both feet on the pedals; do not ride more than two abreast; and do not carry anything that could affect your balance or get tangled up around you or in the bike. Don’t give cyclists a bad name. Be seen, be safe! The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. January 2016

I

've always enjoyed the well-known places and the quiet backwaters of London, and more recently they have encouraged me in a journey back to better health. My life changed dramatically with serious illness. Having been involved in photography in the past, the route back to a near normal life was to devote myself to a deeper study of digital work. I can no longer handle heavy cameras with long lenses because of weakness in my arms. Using a Leica V-LUX 4, I have achieved a well-respected body of work. The camera is light and easy to use and conceal, so I can shoot with ease in a variety of situations. It proves you can take decent shots with a relatively cheap camera. On my good days, I get out the Oyster card and travel up to my favourite city, London, with hundreds of photo opportunities each day. The city is different every day; the weather, the vast and varied mix of tourists, along with the different cultures and races that make up London. Put together with the range of buildings, old and new, and it's a vast canvas to work with. I have been interested in photography from the age of 15. Starting with roll film, developing and printing my own images, I also worked with 35mm film and large format cameras and in another life I spent time as a professional darkroom manager. I now work with digital cameras and computers, including Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, using them to make minimal changes to the basic photograph. The purist may say that the shot should not be tampered with, but I can assure you that in the past, many a professional, old-style film photographer's work was saved in the darkroom. Many things inspire me to take photos: music, books and the thought of being back in hospital

where even walking cannot be taken for granted. After starting photography I discovered the images of Cartier-Breeson, who I admire very much. Another influence on my work is Bill Brandt, the 1940s street photographer (I prefer the term life photographer). I strive for simple, dynamic pictures. Among the works on show this month will be Blue Water (opposite, bottom left), a picture commended by The Guardian. I love this photograph; it's one of those moments that makes you feel alive. Another one of my popular works is Waiting for the Bus (opposite, top left), which won the Transport For London Photo Competition 2015. This photograph was taken at Canada Water bus station and for me it highlights how life can sometimes seem so grey. Some of my work is inspired by politics – one is called After Marx (opposite, top right), after reading a biography of Karl Marx, it's a shot of commuters in their headlong rush around the City. Another on show is The London Diner (opposite, bottom right), which to me is about class and the way people in the big city rarely speak to each other. After viewing this range of pictures, you'll really look at London with fresh eyes, and see new things in old places. I would like to give a big thanks to my Mum and Dad for their never-ending support. Colin's photographs will be on display at Wanstead Library from 4 to 23 January. Colin runs a photography group for the over55s at Age UK's Allan Burgess Activity Centre in Wanstead on Wednesday afternoons. For more information, call 020 8989 6338

MOUTHAWARE? T HE NUMBER of people in the UK diagnosed with mouth cancer has increased by a third in the last decade – the disease now takes more lives each year than road accidents. However, figures also reveal that while the survival rate is 50% after late diagnosis, it is 90% after early diagnosis – highlighting the importance of having your mouth checked by a trained professional.

Step by Step Local resident Dawn Branigan explains the numerous benefits that Nordic Walking has had on her health – from weight loss to improved breathing – and encourages others to join her in Wanstead Park

F

our years ago I sustained a bi-malleoli fracture: the tibia snapped in two and the fibula exploded into tiny pieces. The injury needed two screws to secure the tibia and a 3.5 inch plate around which the shrapnel of the fibula could fuse together. Although the bones repaired well, the tendon damage left my leg and foot weak. I was encouraged to do lots of walking. However, the pavements of Wanstead are very unforgiving and I found my muscles and bones were less than happy. I saw an article about Nordic Walking and found Tim Hector worked out of Wanstead Park. There are others, but I selected Tim because he came with experience in remedial work. I did the taster session and knew within 15 minutes this was exactly what I was looking for. The terrain in the park is much better for walking and the uneven surfaces helped the tendons to loosen. I then enrolled onto the 'learn how to' course – a four-week programme to learn the various techniques of Nordic Walking. Crushing the lemons, which encourages us to walk heel to toe, was particularly good for the tendons. Tim also worked with resistance bands to help me strengthen the muscles and tendons so that I could cope with walking greater distances. Four years later, I am now in the 'extreme class'. We cover between three and a half and four miles in an hour and we also do some resistance work to develop strength and stamina. Although it has taken time, my left leg is now almost as strong as my right and I have relearnt how to skip – something I could not do at all.

Dawn Branigan

releases the tension and the movement is brilliant by the end of the session. zz It has helped to reduce the symptoms of asthma because the use of poles improves posture without any effort. So my breathing has also improved. zz I lost about half a stone in weight – which I had been struggling to do for years. The thing I most enjoy about Nordic Walking is the challenges Tim throws at us. I love working out in the open and Wanstead Park is beautiful, whatever the season. I now find that I am more productive on Sunday and really energised by the walk.

There have been some other benefits too: zz I have had a shoulder and arm problem for some time as a result of my job. It is usually very tight when I arrive on Sunday morning for the walk, but the technique with the poles

Growing your tree Looking for a new project for the New Year? Starting a family tree could keep you occupied for longer than you think, says Sandra Patchett, chair of the local branch of the East of London Family History Society

W

hen I started to build my family tree I thought it would take a few months and perhaps reveal a secret link to the royal family, or some other famous individual I could boast about. That was 20 years ago, and my tree is growing in all directions, although it still has a long way to go. Sadly, the nearest I have got to a famous ancestor was cousin Hilda Blake from Norfolk. You've probably not even heard of her, but just as the 19th century ended, 21-year-old Hilda was hanged for murder in Manitoba, Canada. Fame of a sort, but not what I imagined when I started my research – although the hangman did say that she was braver than any of the many that he had hanged. Nowadays, family history has become one of the most popular pastimes and is much easier with all the information available online. You don't have to go in person to visit archives; many of them have put their records on their own websites, or on websites that charge for membership and access. A word of caution here: people who transcribe the records make mistakes, as do those who put their own family trees online for you to use. You need to check everything against the original records if you don't want to waste your time tracing the line of someone who isn't actually your ancestor. Censuses taken from 1841 up to 1911 are available on several websites, as are birth, marriage and death registers from 1837 up to the present day, so you can get lucky and go back a few generations without too much difficulty. Earlier than that, you need parish records and other sources, but it all gets easier with practice. Libraries in Redbridge and Newham offer free access to some subscription-based websites and there are people there happy to help you. In Redbridge, you'll find some libraries that have family history groups meeting regularly to talk about their research and exchange advice. There's a mixture of complete beginners and more experienced people, and the meetings

are very informal and friendly. Go along to a meeting; it costs nothing and you just might get the help you need.

Hilda Blake

I was advised to join my local family history club when I started, so I joined the East of London Family History Society and have been a member ever since. Even if you don't have ancestors in east London it's still a good idea to join, because most research is not specific to one area and you can still share experiences, and we might just inspire you to start your own tree. The Newham and Redbridge branch of East of London Family History Society meets at Wanstead Library on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 7pm to 9.30pm. Visitors are welcome (£1.50). The POND PRO In the second of a series of articles, Gill James takes a look at the history of Wanstead Park's Ornamental Water, which, along with the park's four other lakes, has suffered difficulties in retaining water since it was created some 300 years ago

A

favourite walk in Wanstead Park takes you from the Warren Road entrance down the grand sweep of the Long Walk towards the Ornamental Water. Leaning over the lake in front of you is a 200-year-old cedar of Lebanon tree, reputed to have the shape of Great Britain (if you look at it from the correct side). This must have been one of the last trees ever planted in the garden of Wanstead House before it was demolished. Beyond the cedar is a wonderful view down the Straight Canal. In winter, large numbers of waterbirds come all the way here from northern Europe, some from as far away as Russia and Siberia, to enjoy the milder climate of Wanstead. All year round the herons stand waiting in their favourite spots around the undisturbed islands, among which was once a mock castle known as 'The Fortification', when this was one of the grandest parks in England. If you are lucky, a kingfisher flashes past. In June, you might even see the waters heave spectacularly as the fish spawn. Walk on a bit and you find an elegant clump of grey poplars, leaves fluttering in the wind, in front of one of the few remaining historic landmarks still standing in the park, the hauntingly beautiful Grotto. This imposing ruin dates from 1760 and was once a boathouse, with a fantastically decorated room for entertainment above, built for the enjoyment of the owners and their guests. Visitors who have left descriptions include members of the French Royal Family, Casanova's friend the Prince de Ligne and Hungarian Magnate Count Ferenc Széchényi. Sadly, the Grotto has suffered much damage from fire, vandalism and the passage of time, but it is still a great viewpoint, despite the tatty fencing and the encroaching

weeds, and has featured in many a film, most famously The Big Sleep. The City of London has been carrying out recent work to remove and manage vegetation to reveal the views, but it remains vulnerable. Very low water levels last year have revealed forlorn lumps of fallen masonry lying in the lake silt in front of the Grotto. The Ornamental Water is the largest and most elaborate water body in Wanstead Park, designed between 1716 and 1745 as a set piece together with its islands and fortifications, and forming the eastern side of a huge U-shaped lake system extending around three sides of the estate. Walking all round, it makes a very pleasant hour's woodland stroll, with views of lake features such as the Grotto seen through the vegetation along the banks. The paths and banks have been partially cleared by recent City of London work, which opens up the aspects and reduces water absorption from the lake. Unchecked plant growth has been beneficial to wildlife on the islands, which have been inaccessible for many years, thus making an excellent habitat for nesting birds and other wild creatures. However, last year's drop in water levels, together with considerable buildup of silt and fallen wood, means that several sections of the lake are reduced to wet sludgy silt and the islands are now vulnerable. What has caused the drop in water levels in the Ornamental Water? The lake is on very porous river bed sediments, which does not hold water well. In addition, it sits at the end of a historic cascade, which is currently not working as designed: water from the Heronry Pond should be passed through Perch Pond, then into the Ornamental Water. Unfortunately, the presence of an invasive plant, floating pennywort, means

that water from the Perch Pond is no longer allowed into the Ornamental Water. At the eastern end of the lake you will see the River Roding, which is a splendid sight when in full flow in the winter. The pump house, which today used to feed river water d Park anstea tto in W into the lakes, has not The Gro operated for some years, due to low water levels in the river in the summer months when it is most needed. A licence is required from the Environment Agency to pump water from the river or the park borehole. The City of London manages Epping Forest as a registered charity and Wanstead Pa circa 1906 rk, plans are being developed with other stakeholders to secure the long-term future of this beautiful and historic park. A hydrology survey has been carried out and various options are under consideration. In the meantime, before water levels drop much further, short-term action is needed to maintain these habitats and the creatures that rely on them before it is too late. Food Lovers Fest At Wanstead Library this month, officers from the Redbridge Recycling Team and Amey – the borough's waste contractors – will be offering tips on how to reduce food waste. Joanne Smallman reports

I

© WRAP

'm a recycling officer, acutely aware of the horrendous mountain of food waste (7m tonnes a year) that the UK is responsible for. But hang on, if I'm honest (which not many of us are about this subject), then I have to own up about the green potatoes that went in my compost bin (they got old – I bought too many), the Brussels sprouts that went black (I didn't get all the ingredients for the soup I'd planned), the end of the pot of yoghurt that was hidden in the fridge until I found it covered in mould and the sausages whose date I didn't check and missed their chance to be eaten or frozen. OK, so I'm not necessarily a serial offender, but these bits add up and the bottom line is that even with the best of intentions, food waste goes on to a greater or lesser extent in all households. We all need it to stop. Food waste costs us £12.5 billion a year to deal with. Food waste rots in landfill, producing greenhouse gasses and, let's face it, we're throwing our money directly into the bin along with all the other precious resources, time and energy employed in producing our food and drink in the first place. So what is the answer? According to the Love Food Hate Waste website, the two main reasons we throw food away are cooking too much and not using things in time. We can take action at our next mealtime on both of these things. We can plan portions more efficiently – cooking what we need by measuring it instead of guessing – and we can keep an eye on what is in our fridges, moving it to the freezer to avoid it spoiling. There are many other tricks and tips to pick up: writing shopping lists and meal planning, getting to grips with storage options at home, understanding packaging, getting to know our freezer's capabilities and cleverly cooking leftovers in a creative fashion worthy of Masterchef, or just as a packed lunch.

The Love Food Hate Waste website is an amazing resource with just about everything you need to know included on it. For some real life conversations, tips, cookery demonstrations, freebies and money-saving ideas, pop along and see myself and Recycling Officer Habiba Ahmed at our roadshow at Wanstead Library this month. In the meantime, check out the Love Food Hate Waste website and discover how you can make 2016 a little greener and leave yourself with more pennies to spend, saved from that shopping bill. For more information on reducing food waste, visit lovefoodhatewaste.com The Food Lovers Fest will take place at Wanstead Library on 16 January from 12pm to 3pm.
