Welcome... “Attractive, kind to animals and full of life experience, seeks love and attention for ongoing mutual pleasure – must enjoy walking and being outdoors” Perhaps not the most appealing message if found amongst the lonely hearts adverts, but a pretty accurate plea on behalf of Wanstead Park this Valentine’s. Having found itself on the English Heritage At Risk Register in 2009, the park and its features have been in need of improvements for some time. The City of London have initiated the process with the appointment of a specialist environmental planning consultant, who will be producing a statement on the site’s heritage significance. Turn to pages 12-13 to see the results of the clearing work which has already begun and to find out how you can get involved with the public consultation events taking place this month. Improvements have also been made to Wanstead Library, which now boasts self-service technology and longer opening hours (see page 30). Continuing this theme, the High Street is set to see improvements as well, following an award of £300,000 to Redbridge Council to develop the area. Plans for this money are still to be decided and if you are keen to put forward your own suggestions on how it should be spent, then residents are encouraged to attend the next meeting of the Council’s Area One Committee (see page 6). If it’s your own love life that needs improving this Valentine’s Day, then perhaps you will find the tips you need on page 18. If it’s your gift giving skills to a special someone that could do with improving, then perhaps you will also find the inspiration you need for a romantic gesture – from flowers and jewellery to pieces of art – within these pages.

Suggestions invited for High Street improvements Redbridge Council has been awarded £300,000 by Transport for London in order to introduce improvements to Wanstead High Street. Early considerations include, amongst other ideas, the introduction of an advisory cycle lane in the northbound direction. Suggestions regarding potential improvements can be made at the next meeting of the Council’s Area One Committee at Wanstead Church School on Monday

21 March, at 7.15pm. “It’s great news that Redbridge is putting money into High Street improvements. We

Park consultation

Impressive results

Cycling, improved waterways and better public hygiene were among the demands made at a public meeting with Wanstead Park consultant Peter Wilkinson last month. The event allowed the public to put forward their views as to what should happen to improve the park.

National league tables last month showed that Redbridge pupils have produced the third highest set of GCSE results in the country with 69.3% of students achieving five A* to C grades (including English and maths).

Speaking about the consultation, Paul Donovan of Wanstead Park Communities Project said: “This process offers a once in a lifetime chance to really improve and preserve this fantastic natural gift we have in Wanstead Park.”

This is a 4.8% increase on last year’s results and continues a year on year improvement for the past four years. A Level students also scored their highest ever average point score per student of 730.2, ranking Redbridge in the top third of all local authorities.

Boris Johnson joins mass tree planting to create woodland

For almost four years Telford Homes has been seeking permission to develop the site of the former Chepstow House – pictured above before demolition – in Leicester Road, Wanstead. Strong opposition was met from the local community, however, and the first three

planning applications were rejected. The Counties Residents’ Association and the Wanstead Society joined forces to meet with Telford which resulted in the submission of a fourth plan, which had approval from both groups and ultimately from the Council.

Ten different native species of bare root whips, which are currently about 60cm

high, were planted at two locations off Onslow Gardens and Chigwell Road. Trees for Cities’ Chief Executive, Sharon Johnson, said: “The creation of this new 10,000-tree urban woodland, in just one week, is Trees for Cities’ largest project to date and sees 2011 off to a flying start.”

Wanstead Park cycling ban could be lifted

The City of London Corporation, which owns Wanstead Park, is considering lifting the cycling ban which has been in force their since 1950. The proposal is to allow cyclists to use the path between Northumberland Avenue and Warren Road and there are plans to consult

residents and local groups – a number of which are opposed to the idea – before running a trial scheme. Paul Thomson, Superintendent of Epping Forest and Wanstead Park, said: “The bylaws for the park which prohibit cycling allow the City to designate cycle routes.“

Uncovering marqyuisb goplqaw qsi Pbagsl arknbytrew Wfdrqew anstead With Wanstead Park on the English Heritage At Risk Register and with many of the park’s key features overgrown by shrubs and bushes, Laura Lawson, Projects Officer for the City of London, explains the plans being developed to restore and revitalise the park

W

anstead Park was originally designed as part of the grand estate attached to Wanstead House, home of the Tylney family. The landscaping included a system of lakes, constructed around the house, and extensive tree planting. The house was completed in 1720 as a magnificent mansion, said to rival Hampton Court. Unfortunately, to clear bankruptcy debts, the contents were auctioned off in 1822 and the house itself was sold in 1823 for demolition. The purchaser was obliged to clear everything, down to the foundations. The site now lies under Wanstead Golf Club, adjacent to the public park. In 1881, the City of London purchased part of the lands of Wanstead Park and opened them to the public in 1882. Wanstead Park is a Grade II* landscape on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. In 2009, the park was added to the English Heritage At Risk Register due to concerns that the landscape was in a poor condition and at risk of further decline. It is

The Wanstead Park Grotto after it was cleared last month

understood that one of English Heritage’s main concerns lies in the segregation of the park, as the ownership is divided between the City of London (the main public park and outer park areas, such as Bushwood and the west of Wanstead Flats), Wanstead Sports Ground Ltd (the golf course, tennis courts and cricket club) and the Church. This has resulted in very different styles of management of the listed park, appropriate to each owner’s requirements but lacking in integration and sympathy to the original layout. The public park has been neglected over the years and structures such as the Grade II Listed Grotto are themselves at risk. In addition to this, there is a lack of specific site management and poor quality infrastructure which, if you are able to access the park, detracts from the overall visitor experience to this amazing, large park in east London. The City of London are taking the park’s at risk status very seriously and have taken the lead in developing a plan to rectify the problems. Through competitive appointment, Chris Blandford Associates were tasked, in November last year, with producing a Conservation Statement for the park

by the end of March. A Conservation Statement is a high level statement of the site’s heritage significance. It is hoped that, on completion of the statement, a funding bid can be put together to gain financial support to complete the next stage, a Conservation Management Plan.

©Ralph Potter

The Conservation Statement will have a particular focus on the landscape history, ecology, associated buildings and hydrology of the park along with what can be done to integrate the sports facilities. It will consider connectivity and links to the wider Green Infrastructure Network helping to encourage access and passage for humans and wildlife alike.

©Brian Gotts

Some initial work was completed in the first week of January to clear the Grotto, carefully removing ivy and bramble by hand and allowing experts to get close to the structure to see just what state the ruin is in. Involvement days were organised to meet the clearance deadline. Larger, more established trees were taken out by qualified Epping Forest arborists but the majority of the hard work came from volunteers, including Epping Forest office staff, local community group members and members of the public. It was a cold, wet couple of days but everyone who participated in the clearance work left smiling.

The Project Team also attended an evening meeting organised by the Wanstead Parklands Community Project last month. This gave the group and members of the public the opportunity to raise issues early and give their input. The draft statement will be consulted on formally this month. This public consultation will include an exhibition at the Temple, feedback forms, guided walks, and a ‘drop-in’ event during the second week. Wanstead Park has a fascinating history and the remaining landscape features within it help to tell its story. However, many of the key aspects are shrouded by the overgrown shrubs and bushes. Through working with landowners, local authorities and local residents, we hope to encourage more people to visit and enjoy the park.

©Layton Thompson/City of London

The timetable is very tight, but allows the City of London to hit the necessary funding application deadlines. This is a very strong reason to complete the Conservation Statement stage by the end of March. An initial household survey of local residents has been completed, with around 2,500 leaflets distributed by local volunteers. Feedback has also been received from the children and teachers of Wanstead High School.

Public Consultation Dates Exhibition: Daily from Monday 14 to Monday 28 February, 10am to 5pm (to 2pm on Wednesday 23 February) at The Temple, Wanstead Park. Project Team surgery between 12 noon and 2pm (Monday to Friday only). ‘Drop-in’ evening session: Wednesday 23 February, 3pm to 9pm at Wanstead Golf Club. Event weekend: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 February at the Temple, Wanstead Park. Including guided walks and educational sessions. Call 020 8532 1010 for more details.

Dating Games No-one to be your Valentine? How do you find a special someone when you’re in your thirties, forties or beyond? Follow Jodie Parry’s tips and next year you’ll be the one who’s all loved up

i

t may not seem like it at the time, but dating is definitely easier when you’re young. Hanging out in college coffee bars, nightclubs or the local roller rink means lots of time to chat with prospective dates and size up which one you fancy, while discussing his or her merits with your mates. Fast forward a few years and it all becomes a bit more complicated. You can hang out by the water cooler at work of course, but it isn’t half as much fun as the roller rink and, let’s be honest, tends to attract the sad, the mad and those looking for an extra-marital liaison. So what is a guy or gal to do? Well there’s internet dating of course, but this can be a bit of a minefield. A female friend of mine commented that it’s a bit like buying your groceries online, in that there’s always a chance you might not get exactly what’s advertised and “there’s nothing like actually being able to squeeze the fruit yourself!” She’d recently been speed dating as well and really enjoyed it. “It was actually good fun”, she insisted, when she saw doubt written large on my face. “Everyone knew why we were there. We were all single; between 28 and 45 and looking for a bit of romance with someone compatible.” Did she find anyone? “Well I’ve been on a couple of dates with guys I met there. It’s early days, but one of them is really nice and we’re going out again very soon.’” All very promising then, but what if you can’t face the prospect of a full on, no-frills meet-a-thon. Are there any other ways you might meet Mr or Mrs Right? There are lots of singles clubs around. I’d always thought singles clubs were for sad, lonely souls, but not a bit of it. There are many clubs now dedicated to providing an interesting social life for those without partners. They often organise trips, talks and events for members who may or may

not be looking for love, so they are great places to find new friends of both sexes and increase your confidence in a less pressured environment than a speed dating venue. Confidence is a key issue when looking to meet that ideal someone. No-one is attracted to someone needy. Foreign language classes are a great way to learn a new confidence-boosting skill, meet new people and you’re guaranteed to have something to talk about. If you feel as though your image could do with a boost, book a make-over at a local hair and beauty salon. Personal shoppers are not as expensive as you might think and can help give a fresh perspective on your style. Just remember, whether you’re young or not quite so young, dating should be about having fun.

Art Lovers... Artists will add romance to Wanstead this month with new displays in The George. Here, former Leyton Orient photographer Tim Reder focuses on Italian passions and Caroline Barkus shares the touching tale behind her shot of a pair of loving doves. Reports by Donna Mizzi

Graffiti love messages outside Juliet’s house in Verona

L

ove is the theme for new artwork being displayed this month at the Upstairs Gallery in The George. As the work by Art Group Wanstead shows, the title can be applied to the love of partners, of family, of pets, to the love of pursuits, places or passion for a favourite sport or interest.

Public displays of love and devotion are probably a more common sight at football games than anywhere else on earth. And trust the spectators and the players in Italy to take the passion for the beautiful game to incredible heights, as captured by local photographer Tim Reder, one of the newest members of Art Group Wanstead.

And, of course there’s the love of “Food (and Drink)”, which the artists are also featuring. After all, the occasion is most frequently celebrated with a special candle-lit meal and celebratory glasses of wine. It’s hoped that between gazing into each others’ eyes, lovers dining at The George – opposite Wanstead Tube station – on 14 February will also enjoy the art on the walls.

Tim was Leyton Orient’s official photographer for 11 years from 1990, covering all their home games and some away. Exhibitions have also shown his photographs of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. After covering Orient, Tim left east London for the lure of Italy and the incredible sights the game

February 2011 offered, on and off the pitch. “The Italians love spectacle,” says Tim, pointing to his photographs of big-game coreografia such as enveloping the stands with coloured smoke, which would have many English spectators dialling 999. Groups of supporters plan their displays weeks ahead, sometimes with a wall of coloured flares or fireworks to herald the stars entering the pitches, and at other times by unfurling giant banners or with cards held up by fans to form a club emblem.

Verona – the home of Romeo’s Juliet – offered another Italian romantic diversion for Tim, where he trained his lens on the layers of graffiti love messages on the walls below her balcony. In contrast to these literal statements of passion are the two lovey-dovey birds caught on camera by local photographer Caroline Barkus, after she waited about four hours for the right shot. “They showed genuine affection for each other... then they actually kissed. I couldn’t believe my luck,” says Caroline, from Aldersbrook. There’s a particularly heart-warming tale about this affectionate pair. Just over a month before the photograph was taken, the female dove was snatched up by a hawk at its home in Rufford Abbey Country Park visitor centre in Nottinghamshire. Visitor services manager Linda Hardy says: “Somehow the dove managed to get free and fluttered into the open door of the shop, covered in blood.”

Couples searching for tokens of love for their partners should head to The George on Saturday 12 February between 10am and 4.30pm, when Art Group Wanstead is holding an art and artisan craft fair upstairs. For more information about Art Group Wanstead and future exhibitions, email Donna Mizzi on donnamizzi@btinternet.com or visit the group’s new forum: www.artgroupwanstead.proboards.com

The staff thought it was dying, but a customer said he’d try taking it home to see if it could be saved. The customer, it later emerged, kept pigeons, so he gave the dove the best of care. Little more than a month later it was brought back to the park to be reunited with its mate. Since then, the bird has had two broods of chicks.

Wanstead Library: the next chapter Wanstead Library reopened at the end of January, following six weeks of closure for the installation of new equipment. Steve Roberts, from Axiell – the company behind the new systems – explains the benefits

C

ustomers at Wanstead Library can now benefit from improved services following the installation of new technology. Redbridge Borough Council has installed selfservice facilities and upgraded the reception and display areas, utilising the latest Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to identify the library stock. RFID allows an item to be tracked and communicated with by radio waves. RFID is a broad term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify people or objects – the use of which reduces the amount of time required to perform circulation operations. The most significant time savings are attributable to the facts that information can be read from RFID tags much faster than from barcodes and that several items in a stack can be read at the same time. This new technology will help reduce valuable staff time spent scanning barcodes while checking out and checking in borrowed items, enabling the library to extend its opening times from 45½ to 61 hours per week. Staff will now spend more time ‘floorwalking’ and approaching customers directly as they no longer have to man a counter. The two new ‘Venus’ self-service machines allow users to borrow, renew, or return items; check their account status, fines, reservations and transaction history; and even pay fees by cash without the need to seek help from library staff. The public interface is easy to use and has simple video instructions to help the user every step of the way. Self-service technology will also allow the library to stay up to date and continue to be a technology leader in the community. It is a vital new resource in the ongoing effort to increase efficiency and maintain high levels of customer satisfaction. In the future, Axiell firmly believes that Web 2.0 will bring exciting innovations which will make

physical and digital items more accessible. Mobile phone applications, for example – which use the latest developments in technology, combined with quality standards of library services – will enable a great interactive experience. As library usage moves from traditional face-toface activity to new forms of interaction, libraries can build on these new uses through the fostering and creation of new customer interfaces, discussion groups and online activities.

Essex Farmers’ Markets local produce for local people

Trader SpoTlighT... Ian, Julie and Daniel have been running Norton Field Farm – which is a Free Range Egg farm – since 1999, when the first birds were housed. The first year was a difficult learning curve but now, as they wait for their tenth flock of birds to be delivered, the shed is easier to run, but still involves hard work. “Our hens have a really happy working life” says Ian. “They live in a large barn with clean and dry nest boxes, their own space and access to food and water all day. During daylight hours the birds are free to roam outside in the fields, where they can scratch about, relax and explore their surroundings. We use a special high-protein diet, because whereas caged birds get little or no exercise, our birds are outside roaming all day and use up much more energy, which needs to be reflected in their diet.” You could say that an egg is an egg, but with free range there is a real difference in quality and taste, and of course the eggs are ethically produced. The eggs that the birds lay are mainly sent to a packer, but a significant amount are sold at the Farmers’

Markets. “We always get people comment that these are the best eggs they have ever tasted” adds Ian. During last summer, turkey chicks and goslings were set down to be reared for Christmas, which was a new experience for Ian and Daniel. “All customers gave positive feedback and said they would order from us again.” Ducklings were also set down and are now producing lovely big eggs which are selling well at the Farmers’ Markets. Next year Ian hopes to be able to hatch some of their own ducklings. The Geese will also be producing eggs by the middle of February until July, so you will be able to treat yourself to a big goose

NORTON FIELD FARM egg for breakfast. “We would also like to hatch some of these” says Ian. Geese will be available to order all year round. “We are hoping to set down chicks again this year for free range meat, which is a much tastier meat and we have the added bonus of knowing what our chickens have been feed.” “This is a slower growing strain of bird. We used to grow these chickens up to 1,000 per week and serve butchers around East Anglia and even into Selfridges in London. Commitments to other ventures and the running of the Farmers’ Markets contributed to us stopping.” “When we re-launch this product we will be doing this on a much smaller scale than before” explains Ian. These birds, and portioned chicken, will be available along with a range of free range chicken sausages on the Norton Field Farm stall at the Farmers’ Markets some time this year, so keep an eye out.

Men’s problems Too many men are dying prematurely with just 66% reaching the age of 75. Sue Blain explores some of the problems and possible solutions

M

en are more likely than women to die from heart disease, cancer and suicide, to be overweight, to smoke and to drink alcohol excessively, but less likely to use health services effectively or to take part in selfhelp programmes. One of the biggest boosts would be to have someone to confide in about physical and emotional problems. However, men tend not to talk about such issues the way women do, nor readily take advice. Manchester Royal Infirmary discovered male patients that had suffered a heart attack were less likely to suffer further attacks if they had the support of friends, a partner or relatives. Nowadays men are under even more pressure from financial and work stresses. It is so tempting to eat and drink more alcohol to temporarily ease this stress. Whilst chatting with mates in the pub can be helpful, staying below three or four units a day is important. Death rates in men aged 45 to 54 years from liver cirrhosis has risen fourfold in the last 30 years. Overweight men are more at risk from serious diseases than women because they store fat around their middle rather than on their hips and thighs. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risks of diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. It also helps to relieve stress, as do Bcomplex vitamins, but sugary foods, strong coffee and other caffeinated drinks will make it worse. Maintaining prostate health, the gland found beneath the bladder, is vital. It can enlarge with age and cause difficulties while passing urine. If problems occur, visit your GP to rule out prostate cancer, the leading cause of cancer in men. Most often, the excessive growth of prostate tissue is not

harmful, but may need treatment. Lycopene, an antioxidant found mainly in tomatoes, has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and protect against heart disease and osteoporosis. Try tomato juice, soup, sauces and use tomato puree in cooking, or add to a sandwich mix. The minerals selenium and zinc, found in brazil nuts, eggs, fish and lean meat also offer protection. The herb Saw Palmetto is known to be beneficial, or Sabal Serrulata, its homeopathic equivalent. Testicular cancer, the most common cancer affecting young men, can be cured easily if picked up early from self-examination. So for all the men out there, make an effort and find time to share any concerns you may have with family or friends. You should also check out the Men’s Health Forum website which is calling for action to tackle men’s mental health problems, get more men physically active, address high cancer rates, improve the use of health services and involve more workplaces in their health and wellbeing. Visit www.menshealthforum.org.uk for more information.

SPINE-TINGLING SINGING WITH VALENTINE SINGERS When Nikki Oram moved to Wanstead last year she had no idea it meant she would soon be singing at the Festival Hall. ‘I have always been an enthusiastic singer so when Tim and I arrived in the UK from Australia I was keen to join a local choir. In my first six months with Valentine Singers I not only sang in three excellent local concerts but was able to take part in two performances at the Royal Festival Hall. That was an incredible experience for me.’ The singers joined a 500 strong mass choir at the South Bank to sing the superb, spinetingling 5th movement of Mahler’s great Resurrection Symphony. ‘Although I knew Valentine Singers had a good reputation, I was impressed to discover they were performing in such a prestigious venue. We were also invited to sing in the foyer of the Festival Hall on a Sunday afternoon. That was great fun.’ In April Nikki travelled to Northern France with the choir. ‘Valentine Singers performed three different concerts in churches in and around Amiens. The landscape was stunning and it was such a pleasure to enjoy a few days of sightseeing and singing!’ Valentine Singers rehearse once a week at Gants Hill and new members are always welcome. Full details can be found on their web site at www.valentinesingers.org.

Greenhouses If you don’t already have one, February is the perfect time to think about installing a greenhouse, so you can get a head start on the growing season and increase your gardening enjoyment

t

he ability to shut the door on nasty weather makes pootling about and checking how things are coming on a much more pleasant experience. If your greenhouse has a power point you can have heat and light at your fingertips too, allowing you more time to potter. Don’t think it has to be huge and unsightly. There are so many styles available now, from the traditional cedar-framed variety to pretty bijou Victorian constructions. You could even go a bit sci-fi with a geodesic dome.

s

As well as providing the perfect environment to start off early seedlings, a greenhouse means you can extend your growing season for fruit and vegetables. Don’t just limit yourself to tomatoes. If you choose your varieties carefully you can try strawberries, peppers, aubergines, peaches, nectarines and grapes. Choosing the right site is important. Make sure that the ground is level. Your greenhouse should receive the maximum amount of winter sunlight available. Be sure to consider any shadows cast by existing buildings and trees, including those trees which are not fully grown. The most important time for sun to reach a greenhouse is during the spring and autumn when the sun is low in the sky. Greenhouses are all about temperature. Obviously they are a place of warmth, but they shouldn’t be too warm. It’s easy to cook your plants, even in a British summer. Place a thermometer in the shade near the middle of your greenhouse and monitor the temperature at different times during sunny and cloudy weather. Most plants thrive best around 15-21˚C. If the temperature regularly reaches 26˚C or higher, you will need to ventilate. The simplest and cheapest way to ventilate is to open the door and roof vents in the morning and close them in the evening, but ventilation systems can be fitted which are automatically triggered as the temperature rises.

Greenhouses do require some maintenance. If you already own one, then February is a good time to give it a clean. Disinfect the entire greenhouse with a brush and a mixture of diluted bleach, keeping it away from the plants. Open up any vents to let the fumes out. Scrub down all the walls and floor, then rinse with clean water. Throughout the growing season spray the walls and corners with a hose set on the jet nozzle. This helps keep spider mites and whiteflies to a minimum. A greenhouse can be a wonderful addition to a garden. Well designed, well stocked and well arranged it can be a thing of beauty too.
