“It falls to each of us to be those anxious, jealous guardians of our democracy; to embrace the joyous task we’ve been given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours. Because for all our outward differences, we, in fact, all share the same proud title, the most important office in a democracy: Citizen… That’s what our democracy demands. It needs you. Not just when there’s an election, not just when your own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime… If something needs fixing, then lace up your shoes and do some organizing.”

Welcome...
I
Wanstead
If the soaring, inspiring and patriotic rhetoric didn’t give it away, perhaps the preference for a ‘z’ (which should be pronounced zee in this context) in the final word will make it clear as to the country of origin of this opening quote. The great nation in question is, of course, the United States of America. The speaker was their 44th and now former president, giving his farewell address last month. The relevance to Wanstead? Well, if we replace the word ‘nation’ – and amend the spelling of ‘organising’, of course – with the word ‘town’, then the sentiment could be applied to just about any locality within our own great nation, not least Wanstead. That being said, if there were a list of places in the UK where residents were in need of inspiration to better their community, then Wanstead would be at the bottom of that list (or at the back of the queue, perhaps). And if Barack Obama were to repeat those words to the residents of Wanstead (and he does have a bit more time on his hands now), he would be preaching to the choir. “So, you see, that’s what our democracy demands. It needs you,” continued President Obama. But then here in Wanstead we already knew that, didn’t we? Lee Marquis, Editor Yes, we did.

Community gardeners needed for Snaresbrook station’s platform flower bed The Wanstead Community Gardeners (WCG) are hoping to establish a new work group to maintain the flower bed located on platform two at Snaresbrook station. The mini garden was created several years ago by station staff, but with changes to London Underground’s staffing policy there will no longer be a fixed pool of personnel working there, and it is feared the patch will not survive. “WCG cannot take it on. We’re pretty much at full stretch… maintaining nearly 20 patches at the moment. However, we are in a good position to organise a new

Charity coffee morning returns
Interview held for new school
A long-running annual charity coffee morning and tabletop sale will return to St Gabriel’s Church in Aldersbrook this month. “We have been running this free-to-charities sale – where local groups can advertise or raise funds for their aims – for many years. It’s just a thank you to folk who do things for others,” said organiser Ron Filer. The event will take place on 18 February from 10.30am to 12.30pm (free entry). Visit wavidi.co/stgab
The Thomas Lucas Academy Trust (TLAT) – which is planning to open a new secondary school in Redbridge in 2019 – took part in the final interview stage of the free school application process with the Department for Education last month. The TLAT will find out in March if they are to get the go ahead and whilst the location of the school is yet to be confirmed, Wanstead is one of several areas in the south and the west of the borough under consideration.

Residents force council to agree to a full parking consultation
Meeting shows strong public interest in the future of Wanstead Park
Last month’s meeting on the council’s parking proposals was well attended
Wanstead Park is considered to be one of the best springtime places to see native UK bluebells in the London and Essex areas
Following a public backlash, Redbridge Council has agreed to consult residents and businesses before making any changes to Wanstead’s parking regulations. “Councillor Athwal has confirmed… a full and detailed consultation will take place with the community to work up a scheme that works for everyone,” said Farooq Mohammed from the We Want Say Action Group and one of more than 200 people who attended a public meeting last month to discuss the issues. Follow the group on Twitter @WeWantSay
A well-attended meeting about Wanstead’s open spaces organised by the local Labour Party last month demonstrated the high level of interest that exists among residents over the future of Wanstead Park. Concerns raised by the 100-strong audience included the state of the park’s paths, the lack of easy access and the absence of children’s play areas. Paul Thomson, superintendent of Epping Forest, confirmed the intention to proceed with a Heritage Lottery Fund bid in August, pending hydrological surveys. Visit wavidi.co/fwp

Miss England hopes for Wanstead resident and charity fundraiser
‘A truly remarkable season’ for Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club
The 1st XI winning the League Cup
After coming second in last year’s Miss Essex competition, Wanstead resident Sehar Zam is hoping to bring home the crown this April and make it to the finals of Miss England. “Winning is more than just gaining a beauty title, it’s a chance for me to excel in my current charity work and to give back to my community,” said Sehar, who is a volunteer and speaker for Macmillan Cancer Support. “My passion for charity work was consolidated after my elder sister passed away aged 23 due to leukaemia.” Follow Sehar on Twitter at @seharzam

Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club celebrated their 150th anniversary year in 2016 with their most successful season in history. “The 1st XI did the double, winning the 1st XI Premier Division and the Essex League Cup… We also became the first Essex club to win the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI Premier Divisions in the same season. The Ladies XI won the North London Women’s League, and the under-19s won the South East Regional T20 Competition. All in all, it was a truly remarkable season,” said Martin Pluck, chairman of the club.
Charlie Brown’s safety project
Take a walk by the water
Redbridge Council has received confirmation from TfL that a project to improve safety at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout is still set to go ahead. The council and local residents have been requesting for some time that pedestrian crossing facilities be added on all approaches to the busy junction. Feasibility studies for the project are set to be completed by March, with building work to take place in 2018 after a public consultation.
Walks by Water – a group that organises riverside walks across London – will be hosting a leisurely stroll along the River Roding and through Wanstead Park this month. The 90-minute walk is dedicated to the memory of Jignesh Patel, a former walk leader who tragically died while walking by the River Ouse last February. The walk will depart from Wanstead Tube station at 2.30pm on 5 February and finish at The George pub. Visit wavidi.co/wbw

Flower power by the hour: can you spare time to improve the local area?
Temple activities: for the love of craft, stories, den building and fires
In addition to volunteers for their monthly work on the Corner House garden – which takes place on the first Sunday of the month from 10.30am – the Wanstead Community Gardeners are also keen to hear from residents who may be available for ad hoc work. “We have lots of mini work parties where I put out a call for somebody who has just one hour to spare to do a specific job on one of the flower beds. If people let me know when they can offer some time, I can fit in with them,” said Marian Temple. Visit wavidi.co/wg
The Friends of Wanstead Parklands will be hosting a Valentine’s Day-themed event for children this month, with activities including storytelling, a treasure hunt and craft sessions taking place at the park’s Temple from 11am to 1pm on 11 February (suggested donation: £2 per child). This will be followed by denbuilding and fire-starting lessons in the park with the forest keepers on 12 March. Changes to dog waste bins
A casual painter and his dog
Dog walkers can now use any bin in the borough’s parks and open spaces to dispose of their pet’s waste. Dedicated dog bins are being removed and some will be replaced by normal versions. The change – which will reduce disposal costs – will make 400 bins available for use. “The system is tried and tested in other London boroughs and will have no adverse effect on the way Vision RCL disposes of litter from parks,” said a council spokesperson.
A curator from Tate Britain will be giving a talk about William Hogarth’s self-portrait The Painter and his Dog at Wanstead House this month. Tim Batchelor will explain how the artist originally intended to show himself sporting a wig and formal coat in the 1745 painting but erased his initial work in favour of casual clothes in order to be seen as an artisan. ast month, local councillors for Snaresbrook and Wanstead held a public meeting regarding the controversial plan to implement a change in parking regulations in Wanstead. The cost of the scheme is estimated at £93k, with a potential income of £135k over five years (2017–2022), averaging £27k a year. The original proposals included:
zz A new resident’s parking scheme for three areas in Wanstead (Wanstead West, covering Snaresbrook around Spratt Hall Road; Wanstead South, covering the roads around Overton Drive; and Wanstead East, covering the roads in Wanstead Village). zz A High Street pay and display scheme. However, at the eleventh hour and due to pressure from residents, the council admitted there will need to be a substantial rethink of the proposals. While the local authority still wants to impose pay and display machines in the High Street, it has postponed introducing the scheme for several months to allow for a ‘full and thorough detailed consultation’. An updated proposal was initially made to reduce the area that will require residents’ permits. However, no solid evidence has been presented to justify why some roads are excluded or included in the permit zones and all options will now be considered. The council needs to be transparent in its dealings with Wanstead residents over its intentions, and it remains to be seen how much of a consultation this will be rather than a lastminute attempt to appease locals. The January meeting was arranged following the inadequacies of the information sessions
in the week before Christmas, where council officers attempted to explain the scheme. One clear omission from these sessions was that no concrete evidence was provided to justify why Redbridge Council wanted to implement the plan in the first place. The key takeaway points that arose from the January meeting were: zz An acknowledgement that commuters are parking on roads in Wanstead Village and around Overton Drive to pick up the Tube at Snaresbrook or Wanstead and that residents have concerns about their ability to park near their home. The strategy to resolve this needs to be fine-tuned – it should not be implemented instantly as this could have unintended consequences, which the council would do well to avoid.
zz The zoning boundaries will simply move the parking problem to non-zoned areas. The knock-on effects on neighbouring areas must be evaluated. zz The council has taken no account of the mixture of land use (business and residential) on certain roads, such as Nightingale Lane. There needs to be a sensible compromise, balancing the needs of congestion against the commerciality of Wanstead. zz The proposal is still in consultation, but why had the council already ordered 800 poles to put up the parking signs on the High Street and surrounding roads? It seems they wanted to go ahead irrespective of local

Moreover, ad’s ltation, new there appears to have been a lack of consideration for what existing street furniture could have doubled up as signs. This means pavements may become cluttered again, reversing the work done previously when a grant was obtained from TfL to consolidate and reduce street clutter. zz How is the revenue raised from the scheme going to be spent? It is illegal for councils to use parking fines as funds to be spent in other areas. The RAC Foundation said that between 2014 and 2015, local councils generated a combined ‘profit’ of £693 million from day-to-day, on- and offstreet parking operations. “We are simply asking that all councils publish annual reports to tell drivers exactly where this huge excess ends up,” said Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation. To summarise, if compelling evidence for such a scheme can be produced, which will lead to a sensible compromise between residents, businesses and other stakeholders, then people will be prepared to listen. The way the council has operated thus far indicates the proposals were a foregone conclusion. When

one party does not listen to the other side or is not willing to show how it has arrived at its decision, then it leads to bad governance and poor decisionmaking. Other proposals, such as changes to the garden waste collection service and in council democracy, only serve to reinforce these concerns. Residents in Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook are proud to live in its environs and are fiercely protective of changes that are steamrollered through due to commercial reasons. Redbridge Council needs to press pause and ensure the consultation now takes the temperature of local residents’ views before continuing with this scheme. When asked if I wanted to coach the youngsters on a Friday afternoon during the summer, I took the opportunity to pass on my cricketing knowledge to the next generation. Having been an ECB Level 1 coach for three seasons, I then decided to do a Level 2 course to become an independent coach, which I passed in February 2013. Myself and fellow coach Hannah Newman, along with the Essex County Cricket Board, wanted to address the need for a cricket club for beginners in Redbridge, an area with very low female representation in the sport. We started handing out leaflets, putting up posters, giving speeches at schools and holding open days in order to give girls free taster sessions to try the sport. Once the girls showed an interest, we needed a place to play outside of school and this is why we kickstarted an after-school Chance to Shine Street project at Wanstead Leisure Centre for the girls to come to in their spare time. The project started slowly, with only one girl turning up after two weeks, but it has grown rapidly in the last three years and we now have over 70 in the scheme, with 15 to 20 playing weekly. The project aims to teach basic cricket skills using fun yet competitive games in order for the players to test their abilities. We have also managed to use the sport to empower and promote social cohesion amongst girls from a wide range of backgrounds who may otherwise have been overlooked and taught them leadership and team-playing skills. The girls’ confidence has resulted in them winning nine national Chance to Shine Street tournaments since their very first win in October 2013, and as of October
2015, we regularly enter three teams in each competition of various age groups. In addition to teaching the girls cricket, I have also set up various workshops for the players, such as a first aid course, CV and interview tips and how to write personal statements for university applications to help the girls gain extra life skills beyond the sport. I am always on hand to give advice about anything, be it school or personal life choices. Over the past seven years, more than 600 people have benefited from my coaching, especially young girls within ethnic minorities. I have used my skills to unite diverse groups and educate young people from all around the east London and west Essex region. I now hope to inspire many more girls to take up the sport and to start a cricket project in another London borough. Cricket sessions for eight- to 18-year-old girls take place at Wanstead Leisure Centre every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. 1508 ... job done! In January 2016 the Wren Wildlife Group set out to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during the year. Aided by keen-eyed local naturalists, the total was 1,508. Tim Harris reports
T
he star of the show in the final month of our year-long count was a yellow-browed warbler that took up residence in the willows on the island in Alexandra Lake on Wanstead Flats from 8 December. The nearest this tiny sprite breeds to the UK is the Urals in Russia, and so should be spending the winter somewhere in South Asia. Although hard to see most of the time, it was still in much the same place at the start of 2017. Local birders reckoned it was probably the most northerly example of Phylloscopus inornatus on the planet – and it chose Wanstead! Remarkably, this was Wanstead’s second yellow-browed of the autumn. The month was the best of the year for plovers – not saying much as we’re too far from the Thames to attract many here, but golden plover, lapwing and ringed plover were all seen or heard as they flew over Wanstead Flats. A little owl was back on the Flats, a stonechat took a liking to the area near Harrow Road changing rooms, and other avian interest was provided by up to seven little egrets around Heronry Lake, and a firecrest, a treecreeper, multiple nuthatches and at least three water rails in Wanstead Park. The only new birds for the year were three red-crested pochards on Hollow Ponds a few days before Christmas. After November’s cold snap, more mild weather returned, providing an opportunity for fungi to reappear. These included a beautiful little patch of parrot waxcaps in the Old Sewage Works. One of our local gastropod experts put names to a variety of snails and slugs – and we ended up with a tally of 33 species. I wonder how many more are as yet unnoticed? Maybe we’ll find out in 2017.
Firecrest
So, as the sun set on the last day of 2016, the final score was 1,508 (+26*), made up of 460 plants (+4*), 821 invertebrates (+16*), 133 birds (+3*), 63 fungi (+3*) and 31 miscellaneous (+0*). In case anyone has been wondering, the ‘miscellaneous’ category included 15 mammals, five fish (surely there are more in our lakes?) and three each of reptiles and amphibians. An exhibition of some of the best photographs celebrating the challenge will be on show at the Temple in Wanstead Park this month. There will also be a presentation of the year’s highs and lows (not that there were many of the latter) at the Wren Group’s AGM at Wanstead Golf Club from 7.30pm on 22 March. *Change from November's count.

Colour a t ho me As an art history graduate with a passion for art and design, Wanstead resident Rachel Root – owner of interiors studio The Orange Tree – is well placed to help you pick the right colours for your home
I
live in Wanstead and have owned The Orange Tree for nine years. We recently moved from our store to a studio space, upstairs in the Corner House, just off the High Street. We offer a complimentary interiors service where customers can have a coffee while we discuss their decorating requirements. We start by looking at colours and deciding what will work best with the light and position of the room, as well as the mood they wish to create. We consider the room’s focal point – whether it’s something we need to create or an existing feature we can emphasise, such as the fireplace. There might be furniture or artworks a client loves so these can often be the foundation for the final palette of paints, papers and fabrics. As one of our clients commented: “It’s a bit like having your colours done for what you wear, only this time it’s to flatter the space in which you live!”
We provide hand-finished, made-to-measure soft furnishings with a trusted network of fitters and suppliers, including Little Greene paints, O&L, Designers Guild and Sanderson. Our clients range from young couples moving into Wanstead and families extending their homes to retirees downsizing. I count myself lucky to be working with the products and brands I love, and continue to train at the famous KLC School of Interior Design in Chelsea.
Rachel’s studio is located in the Corner House, 2 Grove Park, Wanstead, E11 2DL. For more information, call 020 8530 4621 or email shop@orangetreedirect.co.uk

Check or be charged For the past year, landlords have been required to conduct checks on prospective tenants. But recent changes have now made it even more important to do so, says Jeremy Smith of local solicitors Wiseman Lee
S
ince February 2016 all landlords have been required to complete Right to Rent checks on their tenants. However, further provisions were introduced in December 2016 that will make landlords and agents guilty of a criminal offence if they fail to carry out Right to Rent checks or fail to take steps to remove illegal immigrant tenants from their rented residential property in England. There are also new provisions that make it easier for landlords to evict illegal immigrant tenants from properties in England, and in some circumstances, landlords are able to evict without a court order. A landlord will commit an offence if both of the following conditions are met: firstly, the property is occupied by an adult who is not permitted to occupy the property as a result of their immigration status; and secondly, the landlord knew or had reasonable cause to believe that the property is occupied by an adult who is not permitted to occupy the property as a result of their immigration status. A landlord will not have committed the offence if both the following conditions are met: firstly, the adult in question has a time-limited Right to Rent; and secondly, the time-limited Right to Rent in relation to the adult has not expired. If the secretary of state has given notice in writing to the landlord confirming that the adult in question is not permitted to occupy the property, the landlord will be liable even if the time-limited Right to Rent has not expired. This offence applies to all residential tenancy agreements, whether entered into before or after 1 December 2016. If the landlord has taken reasonable steps to terminate the tenancy agreement and those steps are taken within a reasonable time, the
landlord will have a defence to the criminal offence. A landlord’s agent is liable to a criminal offence where they are responsible for either allowing an adult to occupy a property under a residential tenancy agreement who is disqualified from doing so as a result of their immigration status or allowing an adult to occupy a property after their time-limited Right to Rent expires and the occupier is disqualified as a result of their immigration status. These provisions only apply to offences by an agent which occur on or after 1 December 2016. A landlord or agent who is guilty of either of the offences is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine, or both. This is a rapidly-evolving area of law and, as ever, there is no substitute for good advice. If you are a landlord and are unclear as to your responsibilities, or if you face prosecution as a result of the recent changes in the law, speak to a solicitor straight away. Pete Daly explains why he established the Wanstead Backgammon Society and invites new and experienced players of one of the world’s oldest board games to join him at The Duke for a match
B
y the time this goes to press, the first meeting of the Wanstead Backgammon Society will have taken place at The Duke public house in Wanstead. Many thanks to Ronnie the landlord and his excellent staff for hosting our games evenings. I am a lifelong Wanstead resident and I have been playing backgammon since my mid-teens. In recent years, I have found it increasingly difficult to find opponents and have resorted to playing more and more online. Playing online is fine, except there is almost no interaction with your opponent. The social side of backgammon is very important to me, which is why I decided to start a backgammon society in Wanstead. The response has been very encouraging,
and we had a great turnout for our inaugural games night in January. If you are interested in joining us, please do get in touch. All abilities are welcome, and I am happy to teach anybody who fancies trying a new pastime in 2017. The beauty of backgammon is that it is really easy to play but fiendishly difficult to get really good at! I seldom play for money, but I know many people do. Legend has it that the Hollywood star Omar Sharif won and lost a fortune playing the game. A few years ago, I attended a tournament organised by the UK Backgammon Federation, which was great fun and I met some very interesting people there. My standout memory from the tournament was my second-

A M round match. I was paired with a very elderly gentleman of Middle Eastern appearance (I later discovered that he was Armenian). He was totally silent throughout the match, and I suspected that he didn’t speak English. He drank a thick black liquid that smelled like cough mixture and played the game at a million miles an hour in a style that I had never encountered before or since – and he thrashed me 11–0! A brief history of backgammon Most authorities agree that backgammon is one of the oldest board games in the world. It is a two-player game where playing pieces are moved according to the roll of dice, and a player wins by removing all of their pieces from the board before their opponent. Such games have existed for millennia in the Near East and eastern Mediterranean countries. Tabula is the oldest game with rules known to be nearly identical to backgammon; it is described in an epigram of Byzantine Emperor
E
Zeno (AD 425–491). There is also evidence of board games similar to backgammon dating back even further. The royal game of Ur, originating in ancient Mesopotamia before 2600 BC, may be an ancestor of modern-day table games like backgammon.
Whether the game originated in Egypt, India, Persia, Turkey or even Greece is not certain, but what is certain is that it has been around for nearly 2,000 years, which is pretty good going. I wonder if Pokémon Go will still be played in the year 4017? I doubt it somehow. The Wanstead Backgammon Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Monday of every month at The Duke pub on Nightingale Lane, Wanstead. All abilities are welcome. Email pete.daly@ntlworld.com

If singing is your thing, why not join Upbeat Choir on Tuesday evenings? Ballroom and Latin dancing runs on Thursday evenings, or you can enjoy our tea dances on Wednesday afternoons.
A host of children’s activities are also on offer, not least the classes of Redbridge Classical Dance Studios, who have been providing ballet, modern, tap and jazz tuition at Wanstead House for over 16 years and many of their students have gone to win places in major ballet companies.

The age of fashion Members of the over-50s Redbridge Rhymesters and young pupils from Snaresbrook Primary School will come together this month to share a fashion-themed poetry session. Poet Alexandra Wilde reports
S
naresbrook Primary School is going to be working with Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering during 2017, raising funds for the charity throughout the year as part of a programme of intergenerational activities. The school – located on Meadow Walk, South Woodford – wanted to choose a worthy cause that also has a local focus, and, as a first event, a group of children will be visiting Wanstead’s Allan Burgess Activity Centre (part of Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering) this month to take part in a poetry workshop with the Redbridge Rhymesters, a group of older people who use the centre, coming together to create poetry. This is the first time they will be joined by children and we expect the results to be dynamic. Juliette Sells, PSHE coordinator for the school, said it would be a great opportunity for the children to meet some of the people who use the Allan Burgess Centre and see where the money raised will be going and the people it will be helping. The Redbridge Rhymesters poetry group was founded over eight years ago, after Janet West, Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering’s Voices of Experience coordinator, found a poem I had written about my grandmother, Alice Woods, who was born in 1893, and which I had recorded for the website. Janet got in touch and asked if this poem could be reproduced in the newsletter and, of course, I was delighted to agree. Following on from this, it was suggested that I might like to lead a poetry session at the Allan Burgess Centre; it went so well that it was decided to make it a regular event, and so the Redbridge Rhymesters were born.
A topic is chosen for each meeting and the sessions last for about an hour; everyone is encouraged to write their own poetry and perform it if they would like to. The theme for this month will be fashion, and I am looking forward to hearing all the different facets and imagery that may be inspired by this subject – it will be very interesting to discover how imaginations have been fired and what aspect of fashion our poets, both young and old, will focus on. There are sure to be many different and original views on the subject! I am also sure this intergenerational meeting of creative minds will result in some brilliant poems and give the children a chance to learn how people from different eras and places can be encouraged to share their knowledge through reminiscing about past experiences, and preserve it through the medium of poetry. Alexandra will be leading a meeting of the Redbridge Rhymesters from 10.30am on 7 February at the Allan Burgess Centre, 2 Grove Park, Wanstead (over-50s only). An apostasy story At Wanstead Library this month, Lola Tinubu will speak about what she gained and what she gave up when she ‘came out’ as an atheist. Paul Kaufman, chairman of the East London Humanists, reports
L
eaving a religion, or apostasy, is often challenging and sometimes even dangerous. This month, Lola Tinubu will lead a discussion on the subject at Wanstead Library, beginning with the story of her own difficult but ultimately uplifting journey. Lola Tinubu was born and brought up in Nigeria. She describes how being born into a Christian family meant all her relatives and all her networks were religious. It was a complete lifestyle from morning to night, affecting work, education, everything. Anyone who was nonChristian or an atheist was seen as ‘like the devil’ and ‘worse than witches.’ People feared that such people would bring evil upon them in what is still a very superstitious society. As a child, Lola thought about religion a lot and asked many questions. She joined Nigerian religious communities when she came to the UK. However, for the first time, she found space to enquire further. She decided that to be true to herself she could no longer be religious just to make others happy. When she finally decided to leave religion, Lola felt alone and vulnerable. She was fearful because of what religion had been to her all her life. She describes it as a ‘cosy safety net, like cotton wool.’ Having decided that there is no God, how could she deal with all of life’s issues, fears and concerns? She went into a period of depression, uncertain as to how she could continue her journey as an atheist. Lola explains how she is thankful that, through the internet, she started finding like-minded people and support. As human beings, we all need other people. There is power in being part of a community. Making the connection with like-minded people brought confidence
Lola Tinubu
and opened up what she describes as a whole joyful world to her as an atheist. She talks about the endless world of knowledge she has discovered. “I want to know more because… religion dictates how you should perceive, it dictates your insights, so it blinds you,” said Lola. Lola is now an organiser of the London Black Atheists group, which she co-founded in 2012. The group provides space and support for black people and ethnic minorities who are atheists, freethinkers or questioning religion. It is particularly aimed at members of the African diaspora which, for social and historical reasons, has tended to be very religious. “The default position in black society is that religion is a good thing that should be followed without question. We disagree. At some times and in some places, religion in the past has provided social cohesion, schools, hospitals, charities and the like, but the overwhelming evidence is that nowadays religion is divisive, physically harmful, mentally destabilising and morally bankrupt,” concludes Lola. Lola will be speaking at an East London Humanists discussion at Wanstead Library on 27 February from 7.30pm (visitors welcome; free). Visit wavidi.co/elh

Former Wanstead resident Lily Abbin, who moved to the USA in 1954, requested our help in finding an old friend. Lily tracked her down before we published, but we are pleased to present her memories nonetheless
M
y life really started when my parents, Marie and Harry Benson (a well-known local bespoke tailor), bought the house at 4 Woodlands Avenue, Wanstead, possibly in the summer of 1945. Until then, I had been evacuated, along with my beloved twin sister Rose and classmates from Tom Hood School in Leytonstone (now Buxton School), to Farnham in Surrey and then to Horsham in Sussex. If we hadn’t had each other, I doubt my sister and I would have survived. The war years were awful – everyone knew of the Benson twins and many were not kind to us. I have wondered over the years if anyone from the camps we were evacuated to would remember us and I would love to hear from them. When I was evacuated I was a member of The Young Farmers of America and the Duke of Norfolk came to see us and we had our photo taken with him. I then went to Pitman’s College, the local branch, which is not there any more. My favourite teacher, Mrs Florence Osborne, who taught me shorthand, also lived on Woodlands Avenue (number 126, I think) – she was wonderful. My life on Woodlands Avenue was really enjoyable, but memories are now a bit vague. However, I do recall the lamplighter coming down the street every evening in the late 1940s to light the gas lamps outside our house – I always thought that was so romantic! I also vividly remember Winston Churchill in a convertible stopping outside our home, with the proverbial cigar in his mouth and a ‘V’ sign held aloft his head. I recall our neighbours across the street, Mr and Mrs Howard Passingham, holding a black cat in their arms as a welcome sign to Winnie!
Lily and Byrle Abbin
My friend, Brenda Bracken, bought my parents’ home after my beloved mother passed away in 1984. She lived there until about six years ago when she moved to Snaresbrook. I met my husband Byrle Abbin, who was a lieutenant in the US army, in 1953 in France, where he was stationed. We married the following year – a week before my sister – and then moved to the States. We spent 25 years in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Maryland in 1981 for business reasons. My husband and I will celebrate our 63rd wedding anniversary in June. After my mother died, I still returned to Wanstead occasionally to visit a dear friend of mine from my Pitman days – she lived on St Mary’s Avenue, moving two years ago to another part of London. The last time I stayed with her, the Queens’ horses were exercising and we rushed out to give them carrots. Lily would be pleased to hear from anyone who may remember her or from those with memories of Tom Hood School, Leytonstone during the 1940s. Email info@wansteadvillagedirectory.com

Welcome to the stage Steve Wilks, a director trustee at Vision-Redbridge Culture and Leisure, highlights some of the key work that Redbridge Drama Centre does to culturally enrich the lives of local residents
O
In mid-December, I was invited to see The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at Redbridge Drama Centre (RDC). As in past productions, the RDC takes a well-known story and through an ensemble cast breathes new and exciting life into it, with some traditional surprises. The run-time was approximately one and a quarter hours, which shows the clever construction and adaption of the original storyline to maintain momentum and keep young, fidgety bums on the chairs in the audience. I would thoroughly recommend making it a point to see RDC’s next Christmas show. It is important to emphasise that these productions would not be possible if it were not for the ongoing work of RDC, which has worked with schools and cultural industries for the past 45 years to bring the best opportunities to develop creativity amongst Redbridge’s children and young people and support curriculum learning through drama. RDC offer a broad range of services and experiences to make learning through drama possible. Facilitators use drama to tackle a wide range of issues whilst developing collaborative skills and a range of drama techniques. Redbridge schools buy RDC days from April to the following March. Schoolchildren even have the opportunity to create a live television or radio programme. Where else can schoolchildren do that in London, let alone in the rest of the UK? Located in South Woodford, RDC is a unique facility. It is so well recognised that it

continuously receives grants from the Arts Council in order to maintain the important and significant work it is charged with. In 2007–2012, RDC became a Regularly Funded Organisation (RFO) of the Arts Council of England (ACE). In 2012–2015, RDC was funded by ACE to be part of its National Portfolio and for the foreseeable future, it will continue to be funded by ACE. Such organisations represent some of the best arts practice in the world, and they play a vital role in helping RDC meet its mission of great art and culture for everyone. To be selected for this represents a considerable achievement for RDC. This revenue funding allows RDC to expand its professional theatre programme and develop the resident and associate theatre company schemes, as well as offering more opportunities for young people to watch great theatre productions, be inspired by excellent artists and create their own work and perform to new audiences. hough carried out with the intent of creating historical documents, little did I know that the projects photographing Leyton Orient and West Ham United in the 1980s were recording the end of an era, as the game I had loved and which had played such a big part in my life was about to change dramatically. In April 1989, towards the end of the two projects, football was hit by the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 Liverpool fans died on the Leppings Lane terrace at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in Sheffield. Initially, the biggest change at Orient’s Brisbane Road was the removal of fencing from the front of the terraces. Surprisingly, West Ham, despite having large banks of terracing at the north and south ends of the ground within touching distance of the pitch, never erected fencing to keep fans from the playing area. Inevitably, over the next few years, both clubs redeveloped their stadiums with seating only, sweeping away decades of history in the process as old stands made way for new. Only each club’s East Stand survived the bulldozer in the 1990s and in each of those seating was installed on the lower terraced sections. Gone forever were the stadiums bursting at the seams as a sea of passionate fans weighed heavily down towards the pitch, creating a raucous and deafening atmosphere. In truth, Orient’s terracing had long been sparsely occupied save for the occasional cup tie, but
one always lived in hope of a revival as my favourite club struggled to raise itself out of the fourth division. The changes for me were also a loss as, whilst appreciating they were needed for safety reasons and without wanting to get too sentimental, the game has since become more and more sanitised and less highly charged. Additionally, commercialism and the subsequent high admission prices meant a better-off supporter, who would see football as an entertainment rather than an overriding passion. Orient avoided much of the ‘modernisation’ due to cheap season tickets for children and a thriving community scheme. When I enthusiastically directed my camera to record football in its pre-Hillsborough era, I could not have in any way been aware that the end of the game as I knew it was fast approaching.

20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the second of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding gives an outline of the community group’s hopes for the future
T
wo decades is a long time and looking forward to the future is a difficult task. However, the Wanstead Society has a plan to remain relevant to Wanstead and aims to persuade the next generation to keep Wanstead a good place for all families to live and thrive. The short term Over the next five years, we aim to help reduce the severity of council cuts by planting trees, maintaining the garden areas by Wanstead Station and the Corner House and part-funding local amenity schemes – the way we did with the children’s playground on Christchurch Green, for example. All councils have less money than they used to, and while our funds are also very limited, we hope to be able to fundraise for important local issues to ensure Wanstead’s public spaces remain clean and maintained. Medium term By 2027 we expect Wanstead’s population to get larger and younger. The good schools, connections to London, Crossrail and Eurostar services at Stratford and open spaces will continue to make Wanstead, Snaresbrook and Aldersbrook popular places to live. However, it will mean increased housing pressure as homes get more expensive; every tiny piece of land will become ever more valuable. Our task is to ensure the conservation areas are protected and to work with developers to ensure any new builds respect the character of the area. We expect far more planning applications over the next 10 years as space is, even now, at a premium. We are not against development, but are in favour of goodquality housing that respects our past as well as our future.
Scott Wilding and members of the Wanstead Society at work on Nightingale Green
Long term By 2037 London’s population will have expanded to beyond 10 million and we can only expect Wanstead to get more crowded. More school places will be needed, along with more frequent and increased public transport services. We will all have to adapt to a wider and faster range of technology, which will bring untold opportunities and challenges. The Wanstead Society’s task is to be able to harness the enthusiasm of people living here so that we can continue our work for many years to come. Twenty years is indeed a long time, but we didn’t expect to still be going in 2017 when we were formed in 1997. We only do so with your help. So, if you fancy being the next generation of Wanstead Society volunteers, please don’t be shy. Get in touch and maybe you will be writing about us, our achievements and Wanstead’s future well into the 2030s and beyond. Shades of democracy On 9 January at Redbridge Town Hall there was a meeting regarding council democracy. Here, Wanstead resident Steve Wilks offers his thoughts on the potential long-term effects of the proposed changes
L
ast month’s meeting aimed to streamline Redbridge Council and promote efficiency in the progression of council business. This was based on an initial review using the McKinsey 7S framework (structure, strategy, systems, skills, style, staff and shared values) to allow the council to make circa £240k in savings. Some of the key impacts of the proposals are: zz The abolition of yet more committees, with less opportunity for councillors to be challenged. Given what we have seen with the implementation of the parking strategy in Wanstead, there is already not enough scrutiny and challenge of proposals, which leads to suboptimal decision-making.
zz The abolition of two council meetings every year (down to six). Fewer meetings mean fewer items debated and passed, thus reducing the pace of council business. zz Banning the public from asking questions of cabinet members unless about an item on the agenda. While there is an issue of relevance and good order at a meeting with an agenda, prohibiting new questions so answers can be prepared and learnt by rote just leads to a robotic administration. All this proposal does is provide a safety net for poorly performing cabinet members, who should be raising their game not hiding behind it. zz Changing council meetings to allow set speeches from cabinet members with no opportunity for the opposition to reply. zz Stopping councillors and the public from asking supplementary questions to follow up the first answer.
Savings of £240k may well be made, but when pressed, the council was unable to provide a detailed breakdown of how these savings would be achieved. All these developments seem to point to reducing the influence of local opinion over decision-making and withdrawing accountability of councillors while centralising power at the Town Hall. Public opinion is being ridden over roughshod by the council. Decisions are being made on the hoof without proper consultation, scrutiny and debate. This is an unwelcome development and does not bode well for future decision-making in Redbridge. Local residents are not adverse to change, but the correct consultation framework with appropriate checks and balances needs to be in place. It has served Redbridge well since its inception in 1965, so why there is a rush now to change this so unceremoniously is questionable. This is undemocratic as it does not reflect wide enough support in the borough for the scale and importance of the changes proposed. Y
ou’ll probably remember I wrote about Frank Charles around 18 months ago. At that time he was concentrating on his Give A Gift charity. That had its first anniversary recently, and in characteristic form, Frank is now devoting time to promoting another of his charitable activities called Feed the Streets. When I met him at The Larder last month, he told me: “The trouble with food banks is that they run on referrals, and it is nearly impossible for a homeless person to get a referral because they don’t have an address. As you know, there is nowhere for people to stay now. That is really bad. I was homeless for a short time when I was a teen. Then I was given a place in a hostel where I shared a room with three other people for two years until they were able to help me find a place to live. That kind of help isn’t available anymore and people are really suffering. I’m seeing that, as I am meeting more and more people who are homeless and needy in these parts, Wanstead yes but also Leytonstone and Stratford.” “Once a week I fill my panniers with useful things for them and cycle around. The people I find are very grateful, and because of my training in youth, family support and other similar areas I am able to give them some advice too, although with the scarcity of places available for them this is getting more difficult.” Frank is looking for the people of Wanstead and environs to help. If you can donate food or other things – such as clothes and blankets – that would be useful to a homeless person, please do. He isn’t looking for tins or packets that need cooking because they are no use to someone homeless, but for things they can eat quickly and that they need. Second-hand clothes are fine too. He is thinking that people may have socks, winter gloves, stuff that will be useful to someone. He has somewhere to store the goods and is happy to distribute them. This latest activity is not technically a charity, it is in addition to the food bank he runs, and
it is currently just him, although he did tell me that if anyone is interested in doing more than donating they should get in touch and he would be happy to talk. He continues: “I’ve been doing this since I’ve had the food bank. I pack stuff on my bike and cycle to Stratford and wherever else I see homeless people. I am hoping that shops with sandwiches that can’t be sold the next day will get involved. I’m also trying to find the right person in Glastonbury to help. I heard that tents just get left there, and if they’re not given to charities they just get thrown away! To me, this is a waste, and they could be so useful to other people.” “When I was 17 and 18 I was helped with accommodation. Fast forward to now, and whole families are getting hardly any support, maybe none whatsoever. How can this be? You hear of homeless people freezing to death in mainland Europe. It’s criminal.” Frank didn’t want to talk about anything other than his latest project, but on a personal level, I can tell you he is healthier than when I met him at the hospital last summer, that he has been living with cancer for six years now and is doing well. Frank and I are looking at a joint venture to raise money for our respective projects. Maybe a sponsored walk from two different places to meet in the middle, or something we can do to raise funds together. If you have an idea, please contact Frank or the Wanstead Village Directory. Above all though, if you have things you can donate to our local homeless people, please contact Frank. They need anything you can give. FOREST SCHOOL
The co-curriculum
at Forest
Forest School’s co-curriculum is very much at the centre of the school. It’s what makes our pupils stand out from the crowd and it helps give pupils the confidence and ability to excel professionally and personally. There is overwhelming evidence that pupils who involve themselves in the cocurriculum often find that they excel in their academic studies.
Forest offers one of the widest and varied cocurricular programmes in London; pupils can choose anything from horse riding to chess, dissection to debating, drama and a wide range of musical activities to some of the best of sporting offerings. We are always looking to make the programme better and there is a great deal of flexibility. Our co-curricular programme is customised to the pupils at the School, not the other way around. Our core co-curriculum stems from pupils’ interests and passions. Each term new clubs and societies start at the request of pupils, and at Forest we are fortunate enough to be able to facilitate our pupils’ bright ideas with flexibility – these regularly become successful and well-subscribed, with many leading to national competitions.
@ForestSchoolE17
Forest’s clubs and societies are at the heart of the school. If a pupil has an idea for a new club or society, they are encouraged to discuss it with our Deputy Head Co-curricular, James Sanderson, and more often than not, the club or society will become a regular fixture in the School Calendar. Most recently, the school has started up its own go-karting club, and already the team is competing against other schools. As pupils grow through the school, they can join clubs that support their academic studies, while others, like computing club, design club and Photoshop skills club, take pupils beyond the curriculum. Some clubs and societies, like Warhammer and chess club, have involved pupils in national competition. Members of Manfood club can often be seen in the kitchen cooking large steaks, the cake decorating society will always have pudding at the ready. Sixth Form students are encouraged to lead societies which explore career options such as medicine, engineering and law. In addition, our dissection society has become one of the most popular groups in recent years.

Mark his words Mark Lewis will be giving a talk about the history and practice of hallmarking at the Wanstead Park Women’s Club this month. Here, the former silversmith introduces this early form of consumer protection
However, there is evidence to suggest that some form of marking system was in use on European silver as far back as Roman times. The first English hallmarks were struck in London at the Goldsmiths’ Hall, which later created the London Assay Office. Ten assay offices were established in cities around the UK, although only four now remain. In times past, the assay was undertaken by the ‘touchstone’ test, which was never very accurate and sometimes ‘fire assay’ was used, which involved breaking the alloy down in a furnace and weighing its constituent parts. Inevitably, modern technology has made an impact and a very accurate technique called X-ray fluorescence is now used. Hallmarking is probably the earliest form of consumer protection. It is a reminder that people have always wanted reassurance against sharp practices. Certainly, there have been many unscrupulous craftsmen throughout history who have tried to defraud the system. Debasing gold and silver alloys was common and there were many attempts to fake hallmarks, although there were strong penalties for those who were convicted, such as transportation to the colonies!
© Assay Office Birmingham
W
hen I was still a working jeweller and silversmith, like all practitioners in my trade, I was required to ‘register my mark’ at an assay office. All items I made had to ‘go to hall’. This meant that samples of the metal would be taken by an appointed authority and assayed: tested to ensure that the material I had used was of the required fineness to allow it to be sold as Sterling Silver. In following this process, I was engaging in a practice that dates back to 1323, following a practice that began in France about a century earlier.
A hallmark is not to be confused with a trademark, which is a manufacturer’s mark that distinguishes one product brand from another. In contrast, a hallmark on a precious metal object tells a story. Provided the observer has access to a published book of hallmarks, it is possible to know a lot about the life of the object. The maker or ‘sponsor’s mark’ tells you who made it and a date letter tells you the year it was marked. There is also a mark that denotes where it was marked and another to indicate the fineness of the alloy. Traditionally, hallmarks were struck with a hammer and punch, although in recent times laser technology has begun to supplant this. All precious metal objects, except small items such as ear studs, must be tested and marked to confirm their fineness. Legally, unmarked silver, for example, can only be described as ‘white metal’ if it is sold without a hallmark. Most countries have some form of hallmarking system for precious metals, although outside the UK there are differences in marking strategy and the legislation that supports it. Mark’s talk will take place at the Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 27 February from 8pm (visitors: £2; booking required). For more information, call 020 8532 9093

Field of history In the fourth of a series of articles about the history of Snaresbrook Football Club, Millicent Brown looks at how, many years ago, the fight for a club bar was finally successful
A
s we’ve told you previously, the picturesque Nutter Field on Wanstead’s Nutter Lane is a regular attraction for sports enthusiasts living locally (football, cricket, tennis and bowls), as well as people from much further afield. The ground – home to Snaresbrook Football Club for many years now – was very generously donated to locals in the early 1920s. However, all the local sports fans wanted to have a bar at their club. Discussions regarding the installation of a new bar in the clubhouse commenced in late 1973 and carried on for several years. At one point, current Chairman John Sankey (still a regular visitor and pictured in our last issue) went to the local vicarage where he spoke to Rector Paul Bowen with a view to formalising the existing clubhouse arrangement into a proper bar by obtaining an official licence. “He told me we wouldn’t be able to drink on Sundays or at Easter. I told him that would be very difficult as many of our cricket fixtures were played on a Sunday. We went to away grounds and expected to drink in their bars and our opponents would expect the same when they came to ours,” said John. “Football was only played on Saturdays in the early days until the new youth section started in 1998. The rector told me, if the bar licence were granted, one of the considerations would be that we played between midday and 6pm so that we didn’t conflict with church times, so we had to agree to it. We had no choice. I told the League that we had to play Sunday cricket between these times. Eventually, it was agreed we

could have the licence, but could not open the bar on Good Friday or Christmas Day.” Paul Staniford
Before the bar actually opened, all club meetings and after-game entertainment had to be held at the local Nightingale pub, which has a particularly interesting history itself. In the early 18th century, the immediate area was known as Mob’s Hole and was characterised by a pantomime of vice and crime. It is even believed to have been frequented by one of England’s most feared villains, the legendary Dick Turpin. Snaresbrook FC fact Long-standing and energetic Snaresbrook FC manager Paul Staniford, who has run the club for many years, has been named Essex Olympian Football League’s Linesman of the Year for the second season running. Congratulations to him! Snaresbrook Football Club compete in the Prokit Essex Olympian Football League. Follow them on Twitter @snaresbrookfc

House of broken hearts Georgina Green will be discussing matters of the heart at a talk for the Woodford and District branch of the National Trust this month as she explores the lives and loves of the residents of Wanstead House
M
uch has been written about Wanstead House over recent decades, culminating in the publication of The Angel and the Cad, an excellent book by Geraldine Roberts. This tells the story of Catherine Tylney-Long and her husband, William Wellesley-Pole, and the destruction of Wanstead House in 1824. My talk for the Woodford and District branch of the National Trust will explore a different aspect of the history of Wanstead House, looking at the lives of some of the earlier residents. Starting with Sir Josiah Child (circa 1631–1699), governor of the East India Company, I will look at a number of his descendants, who seem to show that his legacy was ‘cursed’. One example is his daughter Mary, who married Edward Bullock in 1692, seven years before her father died. In his will, her father expressed his anger at the marriage: “I give unto my said daughter Mary the sume of £5 and noe more because she hath married not only without my consent but expressly against my command and contrary to her own repeated promises and lett others learne by her example.” She must have been quite a girl to have gone against the wishes of her domineering father. A later descendant, Sir John Child, 2nd Earl Tylney (1712–1784), also had a forbidden love. He was a grandson of Sir Josiah Child, but his homosexual way of life was illegal in 18thcentury England and he spent much of his life abroad. His brother Josiah also caused a scandal by running away with the wife of his neighbour, Charles Wymondesold of The Grove. Wymondesold laid an action for £20,000 for ‘criminal conversation’ (adultery) with his wife and the jury gave a verdict for the plaintiff, with £2,500 damages in 1753. So Josiah became another of the Child family forced to live abroad.
View of Wanstead House around the time of Sir John Child, 2nd Earl of Tylney (1712–1784)
Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, who took refuge at Wanstead House during the French Revolution, is among the ‘broken hearts’ in the talk. He wrote to his brother expressing his anguish over the state of his beloved France. Another must have been the actress Dorothy Jordan. She had been the mistress of Prince William, Duke of Clarence, but for 20 years had lived as if she were his wife. They were apparently very happy and she had 10 children who were given the surname FitzClarence. She continued acting and did much to support her husband and children. However, the Royal Family were under financial pressure with the illness of the King and the extravagancies of the Prince of Wales. When the Duke of Clarence met Catherine Tylney-Long on 19 June 1811 at a fete given by the Prince of Wales at Carlton House he was smitten. He threw Dorothy aside and courted the young heiress, only to be spurned himself when Catherine married William Wellesley-Pole. He, in turn, broke Catherine’s heart, a sad end to the story. Georgina’s talk for the National Trust will take place on 16 February from 8pm at Trinity Catholic High School (Lower Site) in Woodford Green (visitors: £3). For more information, call 020 8508 9541
