Welcome... Networking is a word that has distinct business and commercial connotations. It conjures images of everything from suited professionals discussing the financial markets at team-building retreats to local tradespeople exchanging business cards at breakfast meetings. It is something that I'm sure all those who promote their products and services in this publication will have engaged in at some point and something that I know many will count as a vital tool for their own business development. For those who live and work outside of the spheres of self-employment and customer acquisition, however, networking will most likely be seen as a purely social tool (online and offline). The differences between networking socially and networking in a business sense are minimal. Indeed, the only real difference is the (desired) outcome: a new friend versus a new customer. That may be a somewhat simplistic view of the end result, but, as in so many areas business and in life in general, it is the journey that is more important than the destination. The networking journey is one of building trust, understanding and appreciation for others via a number of processes, discussions and activities – something business people and socialites alike take part in. Of course, only the geekiest of geeks would describe their social life in those terms, but the sentiment is valid. Business progression and social life enhancement may be the obvious results of networking, but there is more. The by-products of networking can benefit the community at large – and that's because we are all part of numerous interconnected networks whether we like it or not. Our interactions with community groups, with other residents, with local issues and with local businesses creates and maintains the network that is Wanstead – a network that is both commercial and social; a network that is greater than the sum of its parts; a network that we all have a lifetime membership to. Wanstead's new playground to be installed after Easter

Campaigners handed their petition to Councillor Jas Athwal last October

A year after the launch of the Aldersbrook Playground Campaign, members of the group are continuing their push to secure a space in Wanstead Park for the installation of a play area. A petition launched in February 2015 has received 400 signatures and also has the support

A proposed new design for the playground on Christchurch Green

of Redbridge Council leader Jas Athwal and local MP John Cryer. "We hope that the City of London [which owns the land] will include natural play equipment as part of a possible Heritage Lottery Fund bid," said campaigner Jo Blackman. Visit wavidi.com/apc

Wanstead Nature Club invites kids to discover hedgehogs

Redbridge Council have confirmed that they will be making a contribution to the Wanstead Playground Association (circa £17k at the time of going to press). The Association – which is hoping to raise £110k to improve the Christchurch Green playground – has now raised £90k,

which includes a £10k grant from The Hedley Foundation. A meeting with playground managers Vision RCL will be held this month and contributors to the fund will be invited to comment on a new design. It is hoped the new equipment will be installed in April, after the Easter holidays.

Children are invited to learn about hedgehogs at a nature club on Wanstead Flats this month. "In spite of threats such as motor traffic, pesticides, winter starvation and impenetrable garden fences that prevent them from roaming, hedgehogs are doing reasonably well in

Wanstead," said Gill James of the Wren Wildlife Group. The event will take place on 6 February from 10am (£1.50 per child) and will teach children how they can help the spiny mammals, which have been in decline nationally in recent years. Call 020 8989 4898

Paul Gauguin: discover his life 1925 - 2016: local butchers and times and inspiration closes after long service

Paul Gauguin, self-portrait, 1893

Artist and acclaimed lecturer Professor Anthony Slinn, who gives over 200 presentations each year, will be discussing the work of French post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin at an Essex Art Club event in Wanstead this month. "The talk came about when I saw the

fantastic exhibition at Tate Modern in 2010," says Anthony, who based the talk around a vast selection letters and quotes about Gauguin's life and his inspiration. The talk will take place from 2.30pm at Wanstead House on 28 February (visitors: £5). Call 020 8989 5143

Having served the local community since 1925, AG Dennis – Wanstead's only independent butchers – ceased trading last month. In a statement on their website, the business, which celebrated its 90th birthday last September, thanked past clients for 'many

years of loyal custom and support'. Chair of the Wanstead society, Scott wilding, said: "We feel very sad that a business of 90 years has left the High Street. It had many devoted fans, but this shows that we must support our local businesses where possible."

Community charity sale

HSBC to close in April

Local groups and charities are invited to take part in a coffee morning and 'boot sale' at St Gabriel's Church hall in Aldersbrook this month. The annual event – which will take place on 20 February from 10.30am to 1pm – provides an opportunity for local organisations to promote and discuss their work with members of the community and to raise funds to meet their future goals. Table space for charities and admission for visitors is free. Visit wavidi.com/ccm

HSBC have announced their Wanstead High Street branch will close on 15 April, citing a reduction in its use, something which has been contested by local customers. "We understand that it's unsettling for the community. Unfortunately, with an increase in the use of online and telephone banking in recent years we have seen the use of the branch fall significantly," said a spokesperson for the bank. "Customers can use local Post Offices for their day-to-day banking and there are also free ATMs in the area."

Woodbine Place Recycling Site

Wanstead Community Gardener Marian Temple is appealing to local residents to help prevent Wanstead's street recycling bins from degrading the appearance of the area. "Recycling is a brilliant idea, but street recycling bins are often misused and create a serious

eyesore. I keep the relevant telephone numbers in my mobile and text the firms when there's a mess. It's cleared up very soon," said Marian. The numbers are: 020 7476 2888 for textile recycling (LMB) and 0800 389 9918 for bottles, cans, paper and card (Shanks).

Wanstead Library will be hosting several free workshops for children this month. On 16 February, an afternoon of activities will begin by exploring the 'crazy world' of Charlie and Lola (from 1.30pm; five- to sevenyear-olds). This will be followed by a Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory workshop, in which participants will be encouraged to design their own chocolate bar (from 3.30pm; seven- to 10-year-olds). On 17 February, from 3pm, four- to 12-yearolds can enjoy board games, puzzles and 'monkey-themed fun'. Call 020 8708 7400

Health Secretary approves Wanstead ward closure

Ringlefinch

The Secretary of State for Health has endorsed plans to close the Heronwood and Galleon ward in Wanstead. "We welcome the Health Secretary's decision that a full review looking into changes to intermediate care services is not required…

Heronwood and Galleon unit is now closed and work began [last month] to refurbish Jasmine ward at King George Hospital so it can accept intermediate care patients in the spring," said a spokesperson for the Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Group.

St Gabriel's Church hall in Aldersbrook is set to play host to live music performances in the year ahead. Six-piece folk band Ringlefinch will fill the hall with their 'toe-tapping rhythms' and 'dark-humoured, wittily introspective lyrics' on 6 February from 8pm (tickets: £5

on the door). A Pet Shop Boys tribute band will also take to the stage on 19 March (tickets: £10 from Aldersbrook Library). The events are organised by fatherand-son-team Ron and Callum Albrow, who have been staging live music at various local venues since 2009.

T

he Shoulder of Mutton Pond, at a little under three acres, is the smallest of Wanstead Park's surviving water bodies. However, it has a quiet charm and an interesting history. Though, at first glance, quite natural-looking, the Shoulder of Mutton probably shares the origins of its much larger eastern neighbour, the Heronry Pond. Both first appear on the 1745 Environs of London map by Jean Rocque, which had been surveyed the previous year. This map accurately shows the core areas of the gardens, which Rocque had surveyed a decade earlier. However, the serpentine lakes are sketched in rather carelessly and they are not located accurately in the landscape. Rocque shows the Shoulder of Mutton Pond as a broadly oval-shaped water body between The Reservoir and Lake Pond to the west, which we will discuss on another occasion, and the Heronry Pond to the east. Interestingly, the Shoulder of Mutton Pond is labelled on Rocque's map as the 'House Field Pond'. This is presumably a reference to the mediaeval manor house, later used as a Royal hunting lodge by Henry VII and Henry VIII, which is believed to have been somewhere in this part of the park. This name has led to some debate: one suggestion is that the pond was an old feature of the park which had existed in some form at the time of the former manor house. Another is that the name simply relates to the later field which included the house site. However, the western view of Wanstead Park by Jan Kip of about 1710, takes in part of the area of the later pond and shows nothing but a flat plain crossed by trees. It may be noteworthy in this regard that Rocque's 1735 map appears to depict the areas both of the Shoulder of Mutton Pond and the Heronry Pond to the east as being subsumed into a single water body, to be known as the Great Lake. It is interesting to speculate why this, assuming it represented a firm intention, was not carried through. Two main possibilities suggest themselves. The first is that there was simply a change of plan and that, during the years of the lakes' construction, the formal outline of the intended water body was modified in favour of a more naturalistic configuration. The second, perhaps more likely, possibility is that problems with the water supply began to manifest themselves

at an early stage of construction. Creating the Shoulder of Mutton Pond as a separate entity would mean that the water that entered it from the west was retained until it rose to the level of the overflow channel. This would ensure that water was always visible from the south end of Wanstead House. In the time of John, 2nd Earl Tylney, important modifications to the lakes were made. At least one map, and a later sketch by Humphry Repton, show the Heronry and Shoulder of Mutton Ponds joined. If Lord Tylney did something to augment the water supply, this later ultimately proved to be unsustainable. The Searles plan of 1779 already shows a series of embankments dividing the united lake into three. It may be that these were initially designed to be submerged when the lake was full, but as the water fell in periods of drought, would create a hierarchy of water bodies based on their visibility. By the early 19th century the embankments seem to have become more or less permanently visible, and by 1820 the Shoulder of Mutton Pond is shown considerably augmented in area and depth (as may be deduced from the fact that it had flooded a hollow to the west, which had formerly contained a road). We assume that the water supply, which had formerly fed two – by now – abandoned lakes to the west had been redirected to it, and that its embankment was raised to make the pond still more visible from the house. The water level was certainly higher than is normally the case today. The Shoulder of Mutton Pond survives today in broadly the same form as it is depicted in the 19th century, and in a generally fair condition, though there is a degree of silting in some areas. The water level falls during the summer months, but it is sustained by groundwater even in the driest years. It was long used for skating and swimming, and a jetty and diving board survived until recent decades. More recently, beautiful reed beds have further softened and naturalised its appearance, and it is a haven for waterfowl, as well as a range of other wildlife. The Shoulder of Mutton's shallow sloping banks and reed beds make access perfect for mating frogs, toads and newts and the only breeding reed warblers in the park. Safe access is also good for children who wish to do a little unofficial pond-dipping. The nearby woodland

is home to many lovely birds, such as the tiny firecrest, and in spring is alive with birdsong. The pond is a great place to see waterbirds and a popular sight in spring is the swans' nest rising spectacularly high above the reeds on the edge of the pond, with the nesting swan sitting calmly on top. Local people enjoy comparing cygnet numbers when they appear. All year round one can see mallard, moorhen, herons, cormorants and little grebes. Keen birdwatchers have seen the occasional rarity, such as golden eye, black-necked grebe and green sandpiper. Last summer, great crested grebes nested here and their three young could be seen riding on their parents' backs. Flying

above the lake you might see house martins catching gnats, a hobby catching the abundant dragonflies and pipistrelle bats swooping in the evening. In winter one can see water rail, large groups of wigeon, teal, gadwall and shovellers, and the reeds take on a golden colour and look wonderful against a scarlet sunset. If the reed bed was extended by cutting back the willow carr, then we might even one day see bearded tits in Wanstead Park. As a member of the Wanstead Business Network, Janet Herber knows only too well the benefits that networking can bring to local businesses. Here she offers some insight into their weekly meetings

B

efore I discovered organised networking – as a way of gaining business – I had no idea that there were groups up and down the country sharing expertise, networking tips, business referrals and breakfast at 7.30am in the morning. But it's happening, and right here in Wanstead. Wanstead Business Network is an independent, non-profit making group. The early start allows time for the full meeting agenda to take place, leaving plenty of time for us to get to our respective workplaces. The aim is to not miss too much of the working day. The meetings are lively and fun and I find at the end of them I'm buzzing and ready to seize the day! There is definitely an etiquette to networking. For example, it's generally frowned upon to randomly hand out business cards before being asked. It is best to establish a connection first. Generally, a good approach would be a firm handshake, strong eye contact and a show of genuine interest in the other person. When a need has been established for contact numbers, then exchange cards. Always avoid politics or controversial subjects and follow up on referrals promptly and efficiently. Each week, every member is encouraged to stand and talk for 60 seconds about their business, who or what they are looking for and how they help their clients. A strapline or memory hook is very useful as it helps other members to remember your business. For example, mine is: "Top-quality design and print that won't make you skint!" Cheesy I know, but it does get remembered! At the beginning of my membership – and being quite shy – I was dreading standing and delivering that 60-second talk, but it's a case of the more you do it the easier it becomes. Plus, everyone is so helpful and supportive. Even the 10-minute slot has become easier for me. I consider that personal development. The weekly 10-minute slot is for members to take it in turns to explain in more detail what

their company does. Occasionally, we have a local charity or prominent figure willing to come along and give a talk. Recently, Kate Donoghue from Haven House Children's Hospice spoke to us about the good work they do and how we can help raise funds for them. Networking is a great way to learn about local businesses. We all try and help each other by recommending members' services to our friends and contacts. I think of it as having a whole room full of sales people. I know that each and every member will spread the word that our company provides a good service. Many people who have become self-employed can often find themselves feeling isolated, where perhaps at one time, they would have been employed by a large firm with lots of people around them. I find business networking is very beneficial in that respect because I know there is a whole team behind me, and there is help and advice there if I need it. The Wanstead Business Network meets upstairs in The George pub, 155-159 High Street, Wanstead every Thursday at 7.30am. For more information, visit wansteadbusinessnetwork.co.uk or follow them on Twitter @WansteadBusines

It's all about Catherine In the fourth of a series of articles exploring the life of Wanstead House heiress Catherine Tylney Long, local historian Geraldine Roberts demonstrates how Catherine was a pioneer of women's rights

C

atherine was one of the brightest stars of the Regency period, but for over a century she has been portrayed as a foolish woman, who married unwisely and ended her life in ruin. This cautionary tale circulated because it suited the politics of the staunch Victorian era, which promoted family values while reminding women of their duty to submit and obey. It was inconvenient for them to remember Catherine; a brave woman who challenged the patriarchal system and brought about important changes to English law. Catherine's upbringing played a huge role in cultivating her progressive tendencies. She mixed in enlightened circles, discussing the issues of the day and learning that it was important for a woman to 'value' herself. This doctrine was also instilled by her father, a forward-thinking man who chose to leave his fortune to his daughter rather than a distant male relative. Other close family members included visionaries, such as the Earls of Radnor and Shaftesbury – two Whig politicians who were instrumental in the fight for social reform. From a young age, Catherine challenged the status quo in subtle ways. In her late teens, she asserted herself as a 'Lady of business' in an industry dominated by men. Next, she fought for the right to choose her own husband, stubbornly refusing to marry a man she did not love. This took courage, as the man she rejected just happened to be the future King William IV. On marrying the man of her dreams, Catherine hoped for a happy family life. Unfortunately, William Wellesley Pole proved to be a brutal husband who squandered her entire fortune and taunted her with a string of mistresses. Catherine was powerless to intervene because English law was entrenched in too many double standards. In fact, the law granted husbands absolute control, which meant that William was perfectly entitled to beat her, incarcerate her, commandeer all her income and commit adultery.

Catherine Tylney Long

Catherine had been a dutiful wife, but the unfairness of the law certainly hit home as William grew increasingly volatile. Writing to a friend she stated her intention to fight the system: "I have shown patience and forbearance enough, it is full time that I should assert my rights; I am resolved to do so, they will find me firm." This insistence on asserting her rights was part of a growing tide of rebellion among women, which we now recognize as the early stirrings of feminism. A valiant woman was needed to challenge the status quo, and it was Catherine who took up the gauntlet. She instigated a landmark court battle that rocked the establishment and led to the first piece of feminist legislation being passed into English law. I hope that my book, The Angel and the Cad, will restore Catherine's reputation and show that she was an important figure in the fight for women's rights. Geraldine's book, The Angel and The Cad, is published by Macmillan, priced £20. The paperback version will be published on 11 February, priced £9.99. For more information, visit geraldineroberts.com

Stairway to heaven Ahead of a talk at Wanstead Library this month, Sandra Scotting offers some insight into the 1943 Bethnal Green Tube disaster, which was subject to a government cover-up at the time

T

he Bethnal Green Tube shelter disaster turned out to be the worst civilian disaster of World War Two, but it was not caused by enemy action, so why was it hushed up? Like most tragedies, there were a number of reasons that led to the event. At the outbreak of World War Two the Central Line had reached as far east as Liverpool Street station. Bethnal Green station was partly built with only one entrance (not the three there are today). It could accommodate up to 7,000 people, so it was a natural place to use as a deep shelter during the Blitz. This subsequently tailed off until the evening of 3 March 1943. The Allies had bombed Berlin heavily two days earlier and, once the news leaked out, locals knew that usually meant reprisals. So when the sirens sounded at 8.17pm, east Londoners felt it prudent to make their way once again to the shelter for the night in the pitch dark of the blackout. People poured out of the cinemas and pubs to make their way quickly to the shelter. They were joined by several buses emptying their passengers next to the station entrance. Just then, the terrifying and unfamiliar sound of a brand new anti-aircraft rocket fired in the park nearby. Nobody knew it was there, so they assumed it was a new kind of enemy bomb. Everyone surged towards the single narrow entrance in the dark just as a woman with a baby tripped at the bottom of the slippery, wet stairs. She pulled an elderly man down on top of her. Before they could get up, others could not stop themselves tumbling on top of them. More people were pressing down the stairs, unable to see what was happening below in the dark. Soon they were pinned down by the weight of those above them and couldn't move. Then they couldn't breathe. It was almost midnight before the last of the dead was pulled out. By then, 173 were crushed to death, 62 of them were children and over 90 were injured. Survivors and rescuers were left traumatised by what had happened.

Artist's impression of the Stairway to Heaven memorial at Bethnal Green Tube station

Nobody knows why those rockets were fired as there was no raid over that part of east London that night. Despite its importance, the tragedy has rarely been discussed and is strangely absent from accounts of wartime London. This is partly because everyone was told to keep it secret to prevent the enemy gaining propaganda from it and to keep up morale in east London. However, we have since discovered that there was also a government cover-up and I will discuss this in my talk at Wanstead Library this month, along with details of the partially built memorial, entitled Stairway to Heaven, that stands proudly at the side of Bethnal Green Tube station. We hope to finish the memorial this year and just need to do a little more fundraising to achieve this. Sandra's talk for the Wanstead Historical Society will take place at Wanstead Library on 18 February from 8pm (visitors: £3). A skill for life Ahead of a first-aid course for parents at Wanstead Youth Centre this month, paramedic Tobie Waggett outlines the steps you should take if a child is choking

C

hristmas may now be a distant memory, but after spoiling our little ones with magical gifts, we need to be aware of the potential risks that small toys and parts can present. Babies and small children like to taste and chew everything. They see it, take it and eat it. A small baby's airway is only the size of a straw and can be easily blocked. Studies show that the risk of this is at its peak at the age of one and declines to low levels at three years. The common sense approach to preventing this is to keep things out of reach, especially objects such as marbles and coins. We also need to cut up risky foods, such as sweets, grapes and nuts. I know that all this can sometimes be tricky, especially if you have older kids as well. However, we need to remain vigilant and it is very important that you know what to do if your child does choke, as seconds count and can be rapidly fatal. The Resuscitation Council UK (resus.org.uk) sets out guidelines on this matter and has gone through intensive studies. This is what they advise:

zz If the child becomes unconscious and is not breathing, start CPR. Give five initial rescue breaths, then 30 compressions followed by two more rescue breaths, and repeat until signs of life or help arrives.

zz If you believe that your child is choking and unable to cough effectively, call 999 immediately.

zz Only remove the object with your finger if you can see it fully, otherwise you may push the object further down.

zz Then, without delay, keep calm, bend them over and give five sharp slaps to their back with the heel of your hand.

Choking is a very scary experience, but with correct training and knowledge we can help prevent it from happening and treat the cause if it were to ever arise.

zz If this does not help, come behind them, make a fist above their belly button and pull sharply inwards and upwards (this is sometimes called the Heimlich manoeuvre). zz Do not do this for children under one year old; give five chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts. zz Continue repeating these steps until the obstruction is removed or if the child becomes unconscious.

This information is given as a guide and does not replace practical training through instruction. Tobie Waggett is a director of 1st For Life, which will be running a first-aid course for parents on 13 February at Wanstead Youth Centre from 9am to 12pm (£30). Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 11th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Stephen Durr discusses two very different subjects: London scenes and the surface of the sun

I

Š Stephen Durr

first became interested in photography back in the 1970s, when a friend sold me an Olympus OM1 camera. It was around this time that I also moved to London and, after beginning work at King's College in the biophysics department, became interested in microscopes. After a period of time I bought a microscope with excellent optics and managed to link the camera to it. From there, after moving to the Institute of Neurology, I also became interested in histology and pathology, which entailed long hours in the darkroom processing black and white negatives, so I gained a good knowledge of traditional photography methods as well. My other interest is astronomy, but this proved challenging as, living in London, there is often too much light pollution, so I decided on the study of the sun, which is not only uninhibited by city lights but is also much warmer than sitting outside for hours in the cold night air! A specialist telescope and camera is needed to safely view the sun and observe the many types of phenomena that can be present at any one time on its surface; huge prominences can be witnessed along its edges, along with filaments, and, of course, the sunspots that occur on the surface due to huge magnetic fields. I use a camera that can capture hundreds of images in a short period of time and then process them on the computer. Digital imaging is an excellent media for science photography; it allows me to easily share images and connect with other groups who are interested in similar subjects. My main camera now is the Canon 70D, which along with a variety of lenses, I carry around with me on my walkabouts around London. My main area for everyday photography is the River Thames and the City, which provide splendid views and huge amounts of history to discover. I also recently joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society and I would highly recommend joining if you wish to improve and push your hobby to the next level. The club has a varied programme with various photographic

topics and themes, which are explored via talks and competitions, so there is something for photographers of all levels. End the blame game Jonathan Diamond, head of family law at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explains why he believes divorce laws need modernising so couples wishing to split amicably are not forced to play the blame game

T

he subject of no-fault divorce has been in the news recently. By the time you read this, a bill introduced by Richard Bacon MP (Conservative) will have been given a second reading in Parliament. As a Private Member's Bill, it is unlikely that the Bill will ever be enacted, but it is certainly encouraging that debate of this important issue is back on the political agenda. Not that we haven't been here before. Part II of the Family Law Act 1996 also provided for no-fault divorce, but that part of the Act proved to be poorly drafted and ultimately unworkable. It was scrapped in 2001. So what exactly is a no-fault divorce? Under the current divorce laws, spouses may only file for divorce in accordance with one of the statutory grounds: adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, living separately for two years (with agreement) or five years if the former partner does not agree. In other words, in order to start divorce proceedings in England and Wales without waiting at least two years, one of the couple has to use either adultery or unreasonable behaviour as the reason for the marriage breakdown. What the current Bill proposes is to "make a provision for the dissolution of a marriage or civil partnership when each party has separately made a declaration that the marriage or civil partnership has irretrievably broken down without a requirement by either party to satisfy the Court of any other facts". For those of us who spend our working lives dealing with the effects of family breakdown, the principle of fault in divorce proceedings is anachronistic, and a throwback to an earlier age when a private eye would be booked to attend a hotel room, camera in hand, to supposedly catch a couple in the act of adultery in order for a divorce to proceed through the courts. Because of this anachronistic requirement, we also have to deal with the frustration of clients when we explain that it doesn't matter if neither party wants to blame the other; it makes no difference if they want to deal with provision

for their children and finances in a civilised manner through mediation, collaborative law or negotiation between solicitors. They have to play the blame game if they don't want or can't afford to wait two years, as do we as family lawyers working with them to limit the fallout and helping them to get everything resolved as amicably and cost-effectively as possible. Even if Richard Bacon's Bill successfully makes its way through Parliament, for those couples who cannot agree on at least two key points – financial settlement and arrangements for children – we will still be left in a position where a couple are unable to divorce without pointing fingers and assigning blame to each other. Divorce is rarely easy for those going through it, so it is high time we discarded a legal process that actively encourages accusations that only add to the pain and stress of the parties involved. Local support A support group for young people affected by domestic violence and mental illness has been relaunched in Wanstead. Natasha Benjamin explains how the group evolved out of her own experiences

C

hildhood domestic violence and mental illness is a major problem of our time, one that impacts on all aspects of a person's life. Here at Free Your Mind we are determined to redress this problem by providing the tools, support and community to help people rebuild their sense of self, and to empower them by teaching and advocating self-care. Free Your Mind is a registered Community Interested Company, founded by myself in 2013. Our mission is to support individuals who suffer with mental illness due to the traumatic experience of childhood domestic violence. Over 1.8 million children across the UK are affected by it in their homes and 1 billion children are affected globally. Through our workshops, awareness campaigns and support services, we aim to give sufferers the tools to look after their own mental health and wellbeing, and to promote the importance of having healthy relationships and brighter futures. In the summer of 2012, I found myself suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety panic disorder and acute depression. Seeking help from my GP, I was put on antidepressants and referred to a psychotherapist for cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). While those interventions helped a bit, it was not until I took my own course of action that I really began to heal. The action I took was to create the blog Free Your Mind – From Pain to Peace, in which I put my experiences of mental illness into words. I slowly began to feel an empowering release through the written word, started to uncover who I was and looked back at my past from the outside in. What is more, the website began to attract others with similar stories to mine. Organically, the personal blog evolved into a thriving online community with a blog platform now running on the Free Your Mind website and into the dynamic

and multidimensional support service that Free Your Mind is today. Our support group based in Wanstead is a part of this resource, helping survivors of childhood domestic violence to come together, make new friends and get advice and support. Over the next few months, we will be introducing workshops for attendees to learn and try new things. We, sadly, had to close the group for a year due to funding reasons, but we hope people will continue to support us and donate via our website. Without it the group cannot run. The Free Your Mind support group for young people affected by childhood domestic violence and mental illness is free to attend and takes place every Tuesday from 6pm to 7pm at Wanstead United Reformed Church, Nightingale Lane. Back to Back in Time Rochelle Robshaw and her family were the 'time travellers' in BBC2's 2014 hit show Back In Time for Dinner. At a Wanstead Park Women's Club event this month Rochelle will be talking about their experiences

W

hen a flyer came through the door saying the TV production company Wall to Wall were looking for a family to take part in a 'time-travelling experiment' it was my husband, Brandon, who was most keen to apply. My initial reason for getting involved with Back in Time for Dinner was my work with the elderly running reminiscence classes. I loved the idea of 'time-travelling' back to the decades I had so often talked about in those classes. Back in Time for Dinner was filmed over six weeks in the summer of 2014 and completely took over our lives. The show was critically acclaimed and gave BBC2 their highest ratings figures for the year. In each episode we lived, dressed, cooked and ate the food of the decade, from the austerity years of the early 1950s to the 1990s, when we started to worry about where our food was coming from and what exactly was in it. The kids, Miranda, Rosalind and Frederick, loved it. They enjoyed experiencing how food has changed over the decades and how this change has influenced the way we live our lives. We had no internet, so we did feel quite cut off at times. Even when there was no filming we had to stick to the diets of each decade, following the food diaries written for the Ministry of Food by housewives across the UK until the late 1990s. We had to move out of our house whilst the art department did the change from one decade to the next, so one of my best memories is the excitement of the first day of shooting each decade. It was only on those first days that we would get our hair and make-up done for us. There was a three-hour tutorial and then after that we were left to it. In the 1960s episode I had a beehive – I loved it but I knew I wouldn't be able to re-create it if I dismantled it. Beehives were called 'marriage-wreckers' as women slept upright so as not to disturb them – I slept upright for four days! Looking back on Back in Time for Dinner, I actually really loved the 1980s. My own experience of

1960s

1950s

the 1980s was nothing like the show's. I was a student during this decade. Reliving the decade was quite cathartic in some ways – it was a decade of undeniable creativity, both positive and negative. When we filmed the Christmas show I felt more nostalgic for the 1970s – with all the tinsel, Morecambe and Wise and that belting Slade song. I do think filming the shows brought us closer together as a family – we really had to work as a team. Perhaps, just as importantly, looking back to the 'experiments' – experiencing the sense of the decades in such a compressed form – has really helped me understand how we live today. Rochelle's talk for the Wanstead Park Women's Club will take place at Aldersbrook Bowls Club on 8 February from 8pm. Wanstead stories Daisy Hughes Daisy, Wanstead

W

hen my parents christened me Daisy after my birth in 1978 in Whipps Cross Hospital, how could they have possibly known that I would one day own a flower shop called Daisy? It just had to be really, despite the fact that I showed no interest in flowers until adulthood. Mum was a hairdresser and every Saturday we visited both my nans in Bethnal Green so my mum could do their hair and then we'd go down the Roman Road for pie and mash, and my nan would always buy Mum crysanths. Later, I worked on a market stall there

selling underwear – honing my selling techniques for later in life! My sister and I both went to Our Lady of Lourdes school in Wanstead and then on to Trinity. I got along quite well at school and really liked art, design and drama. However, I suffer from dyslexia, which sometimes made things difficult, but I persevered and gained five GCSEs. I then got a job at Armani in Covent Garden, which is where I became interested in fashion and where I put my creative side to good use, helping customers with their choice of clothes.

Following the success of Shelf Life E11:E4:E18, in which Mike Edwards documented venerable local people's lives, he is now looking into the histories of those who have more recently arrived in the area or started businesses here. In the 11th of a series of articles, Daisy Hughes of Daisy tells her story

I was only 19 when my daughter was born, and we moved to South London. Things were a bit scary having a baby at that age, but then, about five years later, my mum was doing a basic floristry course. She saw a shop for rent that was around the corner from where I lived and, just like that, she suggested that we opened a florists. She was either completely naive or a visionary. Either way, she taught me to be brave and to believe in myself. Open up we did, and with my mum's careful guidance, I learned how to arrange flowers. I then moved back to Wanstead, but we were still driving to the shop every day, sometimes leaving at 4am to go there via the market, which made life difficult as I had just had my son. So we decided to sell the shop, but my mum didn't do 'sitting down', so she approached the owner of Flora, a florist in Wanstead High Street, and asked if there was any work for us. We happily started working there in 2010, and when the owner decided to retire in 2014, we were ready to take over the business, which is where I am now. We bought the business along with my partner Mark, and then came the big change. The name I was given at birth went up above the shop and I still get a tingle every time I walk down the High Street and see my name up there! But if it wasn't down to my mum I would never have discovered the path I am on now. Sadly, she passed away in October last year and I owe all this to her – it's hard work, but I'm very happy, offering a style of floristry to suit local peoples' wishes. FGM and the law An estimated 137,000 women in the UK are affected by female genital mutilation (FGM). PCSO Harjinder Singh of the Snaresbrook Safer Neighbourhoods Team feels it is an important topic to address

F

GM is practised in many countries around the world, including Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Nigeria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Pakistan and the UK. The communities that practise FGM consider it vital in protecting family honour, preserving tradition and ensuring a female's chastity. It is seen as an act of love and cleanliness and is important in the preparation of a woman for marriage. The World Health Organisation estimates that three million girls undergo this procedure in some form every year in Africa alone. Please be warned that some readers may find the rest of this article disturbing. FGM comprises all procedures involving the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. There are four common types, from a pricking of the clitoris or prepuce to fairly extensive narrowing of the virginal opening, and just to reiterate, all of these practices are being conducted in the UK today on girls as young as five or six years. FGM is illegal and is considered to be child abuse in the UK. Under the FGM Act 2003, it is an offence in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for anyone, regardless of nationality or resident status, to perform FGM in the UK or overseas or to assist in the practice. Even if it takes place in a country where FGM is not an offence, anyone found guilty after returning to the UK can be jailed for up to 14 years or fined, or both. The procedure is often carried out by nonmedical practitioners, such as self-appointed religious experts, and even by relatives. The practise will sometimes be carried out in a nonsterile environment using unsterilised blades or other sharp implements with no anaesthetic. The health implications can be disastrous, affecting the victim mentally and physically. FGM can kill. FGM is not an Islamic practise. FGM is not a religious requirement or obligation and is not a

requirement for 'Sunna' (the traditional portion of Muslim law) in Islam. Globally, most of the Islamic world does not practise FGM. Suspicions that a child may be being prepared for a procedure may arise in a number of ways. Is the child from a community that's known to practise FGM? Is the child's family looking to take the child out of school for a long-term holiday or is the child going away, maybe to the parent's homeland, just at the start of the summer break? Are vaccinations being arranged? Is the child speaking of a ceremony that is about to take place that may be deemed special? Girls being prepared will be made to feel important and are sometimes given gifts, especially just before the summer break. Carrying out a procedure at this time of the year is common as it leaves time to heal before returning to school. If you think you know someone who may be at risk of FGM then speak to them, ask them about their up-and-coming special day, be sensitive and let them know they can talk to you. If need be, consult a child protection advisor and make a referral to children's social care and/or police and call the NSPCC FGM helpline. Contact ChildLine on 0800 11 11 or the NSPCC FGM helpline on 0800 028 3550 or email fgmhelp@nspcc.org.uk

A floral love affair Leyton and Wanstead Flower Club member Pamela Ford takes a look at the symbolism of the humble rose and offers her tips for keeping them looking their best after Valentine's Day has passed

T

he red rose has been a symbol of love, longing, desire and respect going back to Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. The Goddess of love, Aphrodite, was said to have created the rose when tears were shed for her lover, Adonis. In Roman times, soldiers were forbidden to marry, but a priest named Valentinus broke the rules and gave blessings to couples marrying. He was imprisoned and later executed, but before he died he wrote a letter to his jailer's daughter, signing it your Valentine. In the 18th century, romantic noblemen and women sent flowers and cards (known as Valentine cards) to each other. The meaning behind the roses you give is dependent on the quantity in the bunch: zz 12 roses means 'I love and respect you' zz 15 roses means 'I am truly sorry, please forgive me' zz 24 roses means 'you're always on my mind, every hour of the day' zz 108 roses means 'will you marry me?' zz 999 roses is a sign of eternal love – and a large bank balance In recent times, however, it has been more romantic to give a single rose and a bottle of wine. When receiving roses, take off some of the foliage, recut the stems and put them in a vase with clean water. The sachets of plant food often provided with the bunches keeps them fresh for days. Removing the thorns can sometimes damage the outer layer of the stem and may cause them to start rotting. When adding foliage from your garden, cut it the day before and give it a good drink before adding it to your arrangement. If

using floral foam to arrange your flowers, float it in a basin of water until it sinks. This ensures that there are no air pockets, which would remain dry. Flowers and foliage take up a lot of water, especially in centrally heated rooms, so remember to top them up daily. Slugs and snails are the nightmares of gardeners, especially those who grow delicate plants, such as those in the Hosta family. They can strip a plant of its foliage almost while you watch. In the flower-arranging world, we have a theory that if you water the ground with soluble slug killer on Valentine's Day it will prevent reproduction of the next generation of these pests. A soluble solution is bird and animal friendly, so much better for the environment. I am not sure if the date of 14 February is essential, or just a date that we can remember! Joining a floral art group will not only help you to arrange flowers but you will also learn about the care and growing of your chosen art form. You will also meet like-minded people and have fun. The Leyton and Wanstead Flower Club meet at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of every month at the Quaker Meeting Hall, Bush Road, Wanstead, E11 3AU (visitors: £6). 0246 ...and counting Members of the Wren Wildlife Group are hoping to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. Chair Tim Harris reports on the progress so far

With a start like that, it was unlikely that things could get any better, and much of the day was spent finding those birds that are either resident on our manor or which just drop in for the winter. However, just when the light was beginning to go and people were thinking of resting aching limbs after a day in the field, Jono Lethbridge and Nick Croft found a lesser spotted woodpecker by the Basin on Overton Drive. This diminutive woodpecker hadn't been seen in our area at all in 2015. The day's total of 69 bird species was the best ever achieved on New Year's Day. Two days later, Nick had a tantalisingly brief view of what is likely to have been a great snipe – an incredibly rare bird in this country – close to Alexandra Lake. Unfortunately, it didn't give him time to photograph it as it flew off east, so we will probably never know for sure. Next it was the turn of the botanical team to see what they could find. The Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland runs a survey at the start of each year to see how many plants are in flower. With incredibly mild weather through December continuing into January, this was likely to mean a few flowers, but nothing could have prepared us for what we discovered on the bright and sunny morning of 4 January. Yarrow was flowering in many places, yellow splashes illuminated some of the clumps of gorse and the pale blue flowers of green alkanet were appearing here and there. With some careful

efore dawn on New Year's Day, while many were sleeping off the excesses of a few hours earlier, Wanstead's birdwatchers (well, some of them) were on a quest to see how many species they could find during the day. And what a start to the day they had! Intrepidly working through the mud and puddles of Bush Wood, Bob Vaughan had inadvertently flushed out a woodcock and seen a firecrest before it was properly light. Not far away on Wanstead Flats, Josh Selfe tweeted that he'd seen an owl fly up from a patch of broom. Sure enough, it soon reappeared, being mobbed by several crows: a short-eared owl, a local rarity.

The evocatively named yellow brain fungus

searching, scarcer blooms were found, including both Guernsey and Canadian fleabane near Jubilee Pond, where some flowering Alexanders were attracting a number of very unseasonal hoverflies. Wood avens was in flower by the garages behind Belgrave Road and two different types of cranesbill were seen under the Green Man roundabout, where there was also some flowering musk mallow. A hornbeam tree in Bush Wood was carrying a fine display of catkins. All eight members of the botany crew were amazed at the variety of flowering plants on show: no less than 37 species in total. One can expect to find fungi throughout the year, but in early January they are usually pretty thin on the ground. Not this year, though. If plants and birds were leading the way in terms of diversity, the fungi representation was not too shabby with a nice array of colours, including the spectacular yellow brain fungus. So, at the time of going to press, scores on the doors for January are: 246, made up of 118 plants, 80 birds, 26 fungi and 22 miscellaneous others. Expect the 'miscellaneous others' to start making up ground in the spring. For more information on the Wren Wildlife Group or to post any wildlife sightings, visit facebook.com/WrenOrg

"M

y dad wanted me to get a degree because it helps you think," explained Shah Ahmed, proprietor of the Star of India in Leytonstone. "When you've done a degree, you can ask questions properly and can think through the pros and cons." Whatever his plans, his father's untimely death meant that Shah gave up his biochemistry degree course to manage the family's thriving business. Now married with four young children, Shah divides his time between the restaurant, other local business interests and a huge range of charity and local community work. He was invited to 10 Downing Street for a local entrepreneurs reception hosted by the Prime Minister; he is chairman of more local enterprises than I can list here; and was involved with the introduction of BID, an initiative of the Leytonstone Business Forum, which aims to encourage new businesses to the area. Shah is a sociable businessman with an encyclopaedic memory of people and ideas and a passion for keeping things local. While Shah's main focus is his family and restaurant, he's one of those people who compulsively fill up their time with good works. He is chairman of the Leytonstone Festival, campaigns for the Labour Party, is on school PTA boards, works hard in campaigning for Fair Trade goods in local businesses, provides summer fayre and Christmas meals to schools in Wanstead, Leytonstone and Ilford, pensioners' meals at Easter and Christmas and, to celebrate the Star of India's 30th anniversary, started the Cygnus Trust, a small charity that raises money for local groups. I asked Shah how this all came about. Halfjoking, he told me it was because he had got a bit bored. Originally, he would be at the restaurant at 10am to do cleaning and preparation for lunchtime before the 2.30pm traditional closing time. From there, he'd collect the kids from school and get a couple of hours of rest. He thought there must be more to life than this, so joined the PTA and helped set up

Cheeky Monkeys, the parent and toddler group at St John's Church. As the only man in the group, he would initially just accompany the fundraisers as they walked around Leytonstone. Over time, it became clear that the weekday lunchtime restaurant trade wasn't enough to justify its opening and his involvement in Cheeky Monkeys and other enterprises grew. Among other things, he was working with a team on Leytonstone Festival. Shah talked about the challenges involved in making Leytonstone Festival such a success and his satisfaction in seeing local businesses thrive as a result. By using the restaurant for fashion shows, auctions, quiz nights and musicals he has extended what his father started by donating the money raised to largish charities, such as Haven House. Then things developed: "It's a pleasure seeing people enjoy themselves. As a restauranteur that's what I do. But we wanted the money to have more direct impact so we started the Cygnus Trust to provide small amounts of money – between £500 and £600 – to local grassroots organisations," he explained. Shah tells me that his wife thinks he's nuts because he just won't relax, and that his children love the restaurant and charity work but get frustrated that he is always talking to so many people. I think the man is ingeniously adaptable. Rather than allowing himself to be trapped in the traditional role of restauranteur, Shah has created a lifestyle of friendship, challenge and charity around it. Star of India – which is located at 875 High Road, Leytonstone (call 020 8989 4028) – will be providing the food for a PTA quiz and curry night at Wanstead High School on 6 February (call 07753 612 917). Music to heal

Pianist and organist Carl Bahoshy is currently playing a series of piano and organ recitals nationwide in aid of the charity Iraqi Christians in Need. This month, he comes to Aldersbrook

I

am a UK-born pianist and organist of Iraqi Christian parents. My recitals for Iraqi Christians in Need (ICIN) aims to raise money and awareness of the plight of Christians, and people of other minority faiths, in Iraq and neighbouring Syria and Jordan. My performances are typically a 75-minute piano and organ recital consisting of works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy and Rachmaninoff, accompanied by a presentation that outlines the current plight of people in Iraq, Syria and Jordan. Refreshments occasionally follow. Founded in 2007, ICIN addresses the basic needs of Iraqi Christians displaced within Iraq and in neighbouring countries. They do this by providing financial support to those in greatest need and by working with local churches and bodies that provide medical care and primary and adult education. ICIN provides for all people in need, irrespective of their faith, and all aid is channelled through the church. ICIN's current projects: zz Mosul Crisis Fund: in response to the tragedies that ensued following the fall of the city of Mosul to ISIS in June 2014, $200,000 has so far been contributed for the provision of the emergency relief effort in Erbil, northern Iraq, for the 100,000-plus people who had been forced out of their homes overnight. This includes housing refugees in caravans, funding medicines dispensed at three mobile clinics, providing heating equipment for families, many of whom are Yezidis and Assyrians, and directing $25,000 to the Myrrh-Bearers Fraternity – laywomen who have consecrated their lives to helping the poor, the widowed, the disabled and marginalised, and who were based in Qaraqosh but fled when ISIS began the bombardment of their villages. zz The Mahabba and Farah Community, Erbil: provision of care and support for the mentally challenged, both Christians and Muslims, who

have lost their parents or who are too ill to be looked after at home. Includes counselling and practical advice. ICIN is currently appealing to raise £30,000 towards meeting the first year costs of establishing a new home in Baghdad. zz Baghdad Educational Support Programme: ensures the education of 28 boys and girls from primary school to university level. Provision is supplied for the healthcare needs of 26 people, channelled through a Dominican priest. zz Jordan Educational Aid Programme: ICIN presently supports 60 students a year who are at different stages of schooling. The charity gratefully invites donors to sponsor a child's education. zz Damascus Widows Financial Help Programme: ICIN supports 28 widows and their families in Syria with basic subsistence and medical needs. Carl will be performing at St Gabriel's Church in Aldersbrook on 21 February from 4pm. He is also looking to secure additional venues for future performances – call 07732 155 612 For more information on ICIN or to donate, visit icin.org.uk
