It’s easy to add a festive twist to just about anything. From a monster under the bed becoming a thoughtful gift-giver to a carrot finding love during the holiday season, advertising creatives (on behalf of John Lewis and Aldi in this instance) are masters of Yuletide spin. Here at the Wanstead Village Directory, we strive to add a similar dose of Christmas spirit to our publication at this time of year. But compiling an editorial plan for our annual Lillies of Wansteadfronted December issue does not require a multi-million pound budget, nor does it require a heartstring-tugging soundtrack… or any carrots for that matter. There’s never any shortage of local seasonal events to highlight or festive artwork to display. The concept of Christmas-ising the world around us goes hand in hand with the sometimes derided and the sometimes celebrated notion of the commercialisation of the festival. But leaving aside the debates surrounding the meaning of Christmas, there is a principle at work here that extends beyond the annual holiday and it’s called upselling. The Christmas-ising of our homes and surroundings at this time of year is, in many ways, the greatest upsell story ever told, with most of us finding ourselves easily swayed to buy more than we need. Upselling certainly isn’t restricted to Christmas, but it’s a sales tactic that works particularly well at this time of year when disguised among the red, gold and green-tinted glow of December. As a free magazine, we may not have to worry about selling copies or upselling subscriptions, but if we did, I doubt we would need flatulent monsters or talking carrots to do so. Wanstead itself is our greatest sales tool. The people in it, the events they organise, the art they produce, the causes they fight for and the businesses they run. Christmas-ising Wanstead? Well, that’s just gilding the lily. Lee Marquis, Editor

Fundraiser seeks to revive Woodford and Wanstead branch of The Legion A community fundraiser is hopeful the Woodford and Wanstead branch of The Royal British Legion – which closed in 2015 due to declining membership – can be reopened. “All our branches opened a long time ago, and it was sad to lose a branch… If we drum up enough interest, then we could open it again, which would be fantastic. As members get older, you need new ones. Old ones don’t want to take on responsibilities,” said Sharon Bonner, who is in charge of raising funds for The Legion across north-east London. Storytime at last year’s Christmas event at the Temple
The president of the Ilford Historical Society will be giving a talk about local art history at Wanstead Library this month. “Local artists don’t often get the praise and publicity they deserve, but this illustrated talk will look at a variety of styles and pictures of some artists who lived in Redbridge and others who came here to portray local scenes,” said Jef Page. The presentation on 14 December (free; 2.30pm) will include the work of James Pollard (1792– 1867), who travelled to Wanstead at least twice to paint The Eagle pub. Call 020 8708 7400
Christmas-themed craft activities for two- to eight-year-olds will take place at the Temple in Wanstead Park this month. “Join us for festive crafts and stories inspired by the natural environment. This is our sixth event for children this year, and we’re already planning for 2018. We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest and support… Thanks to all the parents that have helped out,” said Jo Blackman of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands. Activities will begin at 11am on 17 December (£2 per child). Visit wavidi.co/crft

A guidebook writer and long distance walker will be discussing the biodiversity of London during a presentation at Wanstead Golf Club this month. Residents are urged to make their nominations for the Mayor’s Community Awards 2018 before the end of December. “Nominate a resident or business and help us celebrate the achievements of those who have made a real difference to the lives of others,” said a Redbridge Council spokesperson. She is also co-founder of The Second Source, which works to end sexual harassment in the media.

Transport for London has confirmed that work to install pedestrian and cycle crossings at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout will take place next summer. Syrian refugees arrive on the Greek island of Kos
A running club that aims to inspire a new generation of runners irrespective of size, age or gender will be launching in Wanstead next month. “Our classes are structured to support every runner, nobody gets left behind, and everyone is encouraged to be the best runner they can be,” said Lindsey Tuley, founder of Run To Be. Members of the Wanstead Quakers have joined forces with a number of other religious groups to sponsor a family of Syrian refugees. “We are applying to welcome a refugee family to live in Redbridge and to help them integrate into life in the UK over a two-year period,” said a spokesperson for Redbridge Community Support, which needs to raise £9,000 to fund the family’s expenses. The group are also seeking a landlord willing to accept local housing rate to provide the family with a home. Visit wavidi.co/rcs

Let it flow: water levels in Wanstead Park lakes begin to recover © Tim Harris
Help pay for play at Haven House this Christmas
Teal have returned to the southern section of the Ornamental Water now that it is filling with water
Grace with brother Maxwell and mum
The mother of a girl with leukaemia and Down’s syndrome is raising awareness of her story as part of this year’s Christmas appeal for Haven House Children’s Hospice. “The first time I met Katie, a nurse from the hospice, I immediately felt relaxed… In just a year, Haven House and Katie have become a vital part of our family,” said Kelly Sherwood, whose five-year-old daughter Grace was diagnosed with leukaemia last November. A donation of £141 could pay for three hours of play at the Woodford Green hospice. Visit wavidi.co/hh17
Water levels in Wanstead Park’s five-lake cascade system – which has been the subject of concern for several years – are beginning to be restored. Last month, Epping Forest management opened a valve to allow water from Heronry Pond to flow into Perch Pond. “With water now being pumped into Perch Pond and then flowing through The Dell, the Ornamental Water is starting to fill. It will take time, but the southern section is already partly submerged as far north as the Grotto,” said a Friends of Wanstead Parklands spokesperson.

designer christmas #1 .

Bryony MacQueen began producing prints of Wanstead, Leytonstone and South Woodford scenes earlier this year. Here, the graphic designer presents a series of three festive Wanstead images
I
established my business, Muriel & Me, in early 2017 when I was made redundant from my job as an art editor for luxury fashion magazines. My redundancy coincided with my friend asking me to design her wedding invites in the style of a 1930s travel poster. This formed the beginnings of what would become Muriel & Me, a company I hope local people will enjoy and support. Having studied graphic design at Nottingham Trent University, I specialised in illustration and printmaking. I was particularly inspired by the works of David Hockney and Edward Bawden. Their ability to use tonal and accent colours whilst omitting certain details to give a picture more impact would inform the basis of my current designs.
Following my degree, I pursued a career as an editorial graphic designer, which gave me an insight into brand awareness and commercial design. This has helped make my illustrations and branding stand out from the crowd. In June, I began designing and producing prints, tea towels and tote bags of the much-loved streets and scenes of Wanstead, before expanding my range to encompass Leytonstone and South Woodford as well… [continued on page 20] To view more of Bryony’s images of local scenes and to order prints and gifts, visit murielandme.com

… [continued from page 16] I’ve always appreciated local iconic landmarks and wanted to celebrate them. These range from The Shrubbery in Wanstead with its iconic lime green Crittall windows and beautiful curves, to South Woodford’s Electric Parade and The Red Lion in Leytonstone. Other scenes I have captured locally include The Nightingale, my current watering hole as well as Dick Turpin’s in days of yore, George Green, the nearest patch of grass to my old house in Mansfield Road and Wanstead Station, a building with a distinctive exterior that displays a simple kind of beauty. I want to make the everyday shine. We walk past a lot of these streets and landmarks every day without necessarily realising or stopping to appreciate them. I simply think of the places that encapsulate an area’s identity and start developing the design from there. Some of my prints are originally linocuts while others are taken from photos and sketches
with particular attention to the colour palette used, which helps imbue them with a bright, vintage feel. This ethos is continued throughout the other items I produce, with an emphasis placed on print and product quality. Galvanised by the recent success of my sales, I have branched out into designing prints for adults and children, as well as children’s birthday cards. More recently, my Dog Goes Woof! print was featured in The Sunday Times Homes section for best interior design pictures. I have also undertaken numerous bespoke commissions for people, giving their houses my signature style, designing wedding and christening invitations, as well as completing family portraits… [continued on page 24] A selection of Bryony’s work is available for sale in The Art Shop (117C High Street, Wanstead), Room 22 (22 Electric Parade, South Woodford) and Jo & Kesi (26A Browning Road, Leytonstone).

… [continued from page 20] As a regular at the Wanstead Makers Market and Wanstead Farmers’ Market, and with a special appearance at the Winchelsea Autumn Fair, it all continues to be a great success. I have now expanded my range to include Wanstead Christmas cards and designs that contain a variety of local scenes with a Christmas spin. And if there is any doubt as to the demand for local images, my website and Etsy shop receive orders from ex-Wansteadites as far away as the US and Australia. You may ask “Why Muriel & Me?” as a business name. Well, it is named after my nana, who
was the inspiration behind my first collection of wedding invites. She often wore heavily patterned materials from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, something which I adored, so I am indebted to her in that respect. Not only am I a designer, but I’m also a lover of all things vintage, whether it be furniture, clothes or design. And I love drawing to music – it fuels every aspect of my design process. A Wanstead Makers Market will take place at Christ Church hall on 9 December from 10am to 4pm. For more information, visit wansteadmakersmarket.com

Mightier than the Keyboard Accompanied by some festive penmanship, Susan Carroll, who runs the weekly Calligraphy Club at Wanstead House, explains the beauty of the handwritten word ake a quick look at the map page in the Wanstead Village Directory and see whose business name stands out the most. It’s Lillies, the florist, written in a pink copperplate hand, which looks so much more interesting than the other typefaces. On Monday mornings at Wanstead House, the ladies of the Calligraphy Club work away at producing beautiful pieces of art, all done with pen and ink. Christmas cards, wedding invitations, place cards, family trees, certificates and even designs for the wording on a cake are among the lighter subjects tackled by the group, whose skills range from the masterful – three of the ladies are also artists – to ‘getting better all the time’. We were originally a private class taught by Manda Barber. When she moved to Dorset, the groundwork that Manda laid meant we had the skills to carry on and help one another out where necessary. Four successful end-of-term exhibitions in, things are coming along nicely. How do you start? With a pencil and paper. One of the most important things for a calligrapher is uniformity, so gridlines are necessary, as is practice. Lots of practice! Everyone has their favourite script; some prefer the sweep and flow of copperplate, others the more linear gothic or the roundness of the medieval uncial style. Luckily, at the moment, everyone at the club is right-handed. If you are left-handed, you need
a completely different set of nibs and a lot of people find it very hard to adjust. The ink isn’t strictly speaking ink either; it is made of gouache paint mixed with gum arabic and watered down to a smooth writing consistency. With a small set of colours and a bit of imagination though, the world is your spectrum. The main requirement is patience. Calligraphy letters are drawn rather than written, and while you do get quicker with practice, a good piece of work takes time. There is nothing worse than trying to rush, getting to the end and then noticing a spelling mistake! As an example of supreme patience, one of our ladies started working in the Borough Engineers office aged 16. She came across a lady in the draughtsman’s office who was working on a certificate and was totally entranced by her penmanship. Thirty-five years later, her colleagues knew she still harboured the dream of trying it for herself, and for her retirement present, booked her onto the first term of a calligraphy course. New members would be most welcome at Calligraphy Club. It is helpful if you have a little experience, even from your schooldays, but it’s not a necessity. Calligraphy Club runs from l0am to 12pm on Mondays at Wanstead House. For more information, call 020 8989 1328

Walking on air Ahead of a performance of The Snowman soundtrack to accompany a local screening of the festive film this month, Redbridge Brass Band member Dave Wallace celebrates their recent and past successes
P
erforming the live soundtrack to screenings of The Snowman film – wow! Well, I’ve not done that before, but that’s exactly what I will be doing this month with my brass band, Redbridge Brass, here in Wanstead. Back in 1967, music in Redbridge was given a tremendous boost with the formation of the Redbridge Music School and I was one of the thousands of lucky children who benefited from this fine organisation. I attended during the 1970s and played trombone in the school’s four orchestras and four brass bands as I progressed through my grades. The top brass band began entering adult band contests and, against all odds, won several nationwide competitions. This was mightily impressive for a youth band. The band also made an LP called The Redbridge Phenomenon. When the band’s members became too old to remain in the music school, it reformed as a separate entity and Redbridge Brass was born. I joined this band in 1979 on trombone and have been a member ever since, steadily working our way up the band league tables into the top championship section, where we remain today. It has been a successful band over the years, winning the London and Southern Counties Area contest 14 times. Along with the other fine musicians in the band, I enjoy both our concerts and contests, and even though we are an amateur group we produce an excellent sound. What I find interesting is the varied musical projects we embark on. We’ve been film extras, appearing in two productions. We’ve been on the telly and radio and even been pre-match entertainment to warm up the crowd at an England rugby international at Twickenham.
Redbridge Brass Band at the Royal Albert Hall
Recently, in October, we played at the Royal Albert Hall as we competed in the finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. Yep, just like in the film Brassed Off – in fact, I played with the band ‘treading the boards’ at the National Theatre for their production of this play complete with miners’ helmets. We were the lowest ranked of all the 20 bands in the finals this year, competing with such world-famous bands as Black Dyke and Brighouse & Rastrick. We were not expected to challenge any of the other bands in the contest, but to our great delight, we achieved eighth place, a magnificent result. So, next up for myself and the band is The Snowman screening. We’ll be playing all the film music with the support of a boy soprano chorister for the beautiful song Walking in the Air. There’ll be Christmas music too, creating a magical atmosphere for what promises to be a great family experience. Redbridge Brass Band will be performing The Snowman soundtrack alongside a screening of the film at St Gabriel’s Church in Aldersbrook on 9 December at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm (adults: £12; under-15s: £6; under-3s: free). Peace for her time As Wanstead resident and peace campaigner Sarah Hipperson celebrates her 90th birthday, Paul Donovan looks back at the life of a stalwart of the Greenham Common protest
A
native of Glasgow, Sarah Hipperson became a nurse and midwife in her late teens, delivering babies in the Govern area. She then decided to emigrate to Canada, where she lived for 16 years, nursing, getting married and having five children. She returned to England in the 1970s, settling in Wanstead. Sarah attended, and still attends, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where she became involved in the justice and peace group. During the 1980s, Sarah became increasingly frustrated trying to raise awareness of nuclear weapons in Wanstead. She showed Helen Caldacott’s film Critical Mass about the dangers of nuclear weapons. “There would be a numbing effect but it went no further than that,” said Sarah, who became a member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). Moving to Greenham Common in 1983 to protest against the siting of US nuclear weapons on UK soil proved a liberating experience. The catalogue of events that followed over the next couple of decades, with a series of peaceful actions, court cases and imprisonments, all formed part of the work. “The work is to achieve complete nuclear disarmament,” said Sarah. “We have all been involved in the crime that presents itself as a nuclear deterrent. The bottom line is that we will use weapons that are 80% more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb, in the case of Trident, as part of the defence policy of this country. As a Christian, I have never been able to live with that.” Over the years, Sarah was repeatedly arrested for peaceful direct actions, like blocking vehicles at Greenham Common and cutting fences. She served 22 sentences, the longest being 28 days in Holloway for criminal
damage. “I never paid a fine,” said Sarah, proudly. Appearing in court provided the opportunity to openly question the legality of nuclear weapons. There were successes, such as when the Law Lords declared the bye-laws that the Ministry of Defence had been using to remove women from Greenham Common were invalid. After the Americans departed Greenham Common, the women established a commemorative garden to mark what had happened and provide a symbol for peace. Sarah was part of the group that handed the garden over to the people of Newbury. The area has now returned to its natural condition. Sarah returned to Wanstead after the base closed. She remains a steadfast opponent of nuclear weapons and a campaigner for peace. Among those sending good wishes for Sarah’s birthday was Pat Gaffney, the general secretary of the international Catholic peace group Pax Christi, who declared Sarah “a wonderful woman at a wonderful age.” For more information on the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, visit cnduk.org

Behind the sMiles Dr Anuj Desai is a dentist at Improve Your Smile. Here he answers our questions about his work and hobbies, and explains his satisfaction in performing procedures that make big differences to his patients’ lives
D
r Anuj Desai enjoys learning about his patients. And with a particular interest in restorative dentistry, he is well placed to make big differences to their smiles and, ultimately, their lives. What made you become a dentist? I did work experience in three dental practices when I was 16 and could imagine myself as a dentist. I shadowed Dr Malik at Improve Your Smile and found his manual dexterity, his dedication and his satisfaction from his work inspiring. I knew dentistry was a profession that would always be in demand. What do you enjoy most about your work? Learning about my patients and their lives. On the technical side, I find great satisfaction in procedures that make a big difference, such as tooth whitening, replacing old silver fillings with ‘white’ fillings and replacing unsightly crowns with more tooth-like alternatives. What is the most interesting aspect of your work? Acquiring new skills, which I then apply to my day-to-day work. Most of the courses I undertake are in restorative dentistry. However, sports-related injuries interest me too. Many of them can be prevented with custom-made mouthguards. If you couldn’t be a dentist, what career would you choose? I’d be a footballer. Of all the sports I play and follow, I have loved football for as long as I can remember. How do you deal with patients who are afraid to visit the dentist? Dentistry can be carried out relatively painlessly these days. I am friendly, and make sure my patients know they’re in control. I
communicate with them throughout their appointment; it is important to build trust. What do you like doing in your spare time? Spending time with family and friends, going to the gym, travelling and playing and following sports (football and golf ). Do your leisure interests inform your professional interests? Every year I enjoy doing challenging obstacle races in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support – in memory of my mum, and for others fighting cancer. I carry out oral cancer screening for patients so I have a part to play in this. Who is your ultimate hero? David Beckham, for his attitude, footballing and leadership abilities as captain of England, in addition to being a great ambassador for English football on the world stage. What is the best advice you have received? My parents told me no matter what you do in life, believe in yourself, and have a positive mental attitude. And always give 100%! Woodford House Dental Practice is located at 162 High Road, Woodford Green. For more information, call 020 8504 2704

ast month saw the launch of the National Tree Charter, which at last gives proper recognition to the value of our trees. It launched on 6Â November, which was also the 800th anniversary of the Forest Charter, a document in many ways more important than the Magna Carta, which granted rights to the common people for the use of our forests. By happy coincidence, November also saw the launch of the latest photographic exhibition on the theme of trees at the Temple in Wanstead Park, which aims to show not only the beauty of local trees in different seasons, but also their place in the local ecology and landscape. Wanstead Park, Wanstead Flats and Epping Forest make great hunting grounds for amateur photographers, and the Wren Wildlife and Conservation Group were amazed to receive over 200 submissions from 26 local snappers. The quality of photos was so good and the subject matter so varied that selecting 21 shots to be printed and framed for the exhibition was tough! It was very gratifying that so many people responded by actually going out and observing and photographing trees when they might not have done so otherwise. Not only is it the venue for this display, the Temple is a beautiful historic building in its own right. Why not combine a visit to this free local treasure with a brisk winter walk in the park and a warming drink at the nearby tea hut? The Trees in the Landscape photography exhibition will be on display at the Temple in Wanstead Park until 31 March 2018 (free; open weekends only from 10am to 3pm). 20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the 12th of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding offers his Wansteadcentric predictions for 2018 and beyond
T
As it’s December, we are all no doubt thinking about parties, family and friends and hopefully, the birth of a baby offering hope to the world – which is why we celebrate Christmas in the first place. But as December turns to January, we start to think about the future. What will 2018 bring? Should I have eaten so many mince pies? Gluttony aside, here are a few predictions for 2018. The Evergreen Field In October, travellers illegally entered this privately owned field off Wanstead High Street. The damage left generated a huge clean-up bill, but 2018 may bring the future of this site to the fore as the community, council and owner seek a way forward. We have always wanted the site to become part of the park and perhaps this will be the year we can crowdfund for such an opportunity. There’ll be an election (another one) 2018 means local council elections. This is our opportunity to ask all candidates what they hope to achieve in terms of local services, council tax, planning, parking and more. Making political predictions in today’s climate is tricky, so I will stick with this: there will be an election. Don’t be afraid to ask the candidates what they have done, or will do, for Wanstead. More guerrilla gardening and litter picks The success of the community-led litter picks and gardening clubs will continue to grow and expand. In 2017 local resident Dan Slipper

his month marks the final instalment of my monthly series of articles celebrating 20 years of the Wanstead Society. It has been a great opportunity to reflect on our successes and I thank the Wanstead Village Directory for allowing us to write about what we do each month. Christchurch Green
started the bimonthly litter picks on George Green. These have been well attended and shows how people have responded as a community to the need to look after the area. The Nightingale pub will continue After concerns that the pub might close, and our campaign to make it an Asset of Community Value, it’s great to see an old favourite carry on. All the local pubs – including The Duke, The Manor House, The George and The Cuckfield – have helped the society over the years and we wish them every success in 2018. The Wanstead Society turns 21 Okay, so a fairly obvious prediction. But with the support of the community and the committee, we will carry on planting trees, paying for benches, examining planning applications and lobbying for other issues. Wanstead is a great place to live. I was lucky enough to grow up here, go to school here and chair the only small charity dedicated to protecting and enhancing the area. So, here’s to a great 2018 and the next 20 years. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation. Membership is £10 per household per year. Visit wansteadsociety.org.uk

Polluting ourselves to death In the first of a series of articles looking at air pollution, Paul Donovan discusses PM2.5s, Wanstead’s buses and Sadiq Khan’s T-Charge, and explains why he believes we all need to live less polluting lives
Among those places with excessive levels were London, registering a concentration of 15 micrograms per cubic metre of air. Glasgow and Scunthorpe topped the chart with a level of 16. Birmingham recorded 14 and Manchester 13. Edinburgh and Inverness were among the cleaner places, with levels of eight and six micrograms respectively. The lack of concern among so many people regarding pollution is amazing. There is now a pollution epidemic, whereby we are effectively poisoning ourselves and our children to live environmentally destructive lifestyles. The effects on health are frightening, with higher levels of asthma in children due to pollution. Children are also failing to develop full lung capacity, which leads to problems in later life, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is estimated that pollution causes 40,000 premature deaths in the UK each year, some 9,000 in London. In the Wanstead area, residents around Woodbine Place have complained about the pollution being caused by the buses sitting with their engines running. There have been high levels of pollution recorded around major roads, often near to our schools. There is a growing awareness of the problem but also confused thinking regarding solutions. People

A
recent report from the World Health Organisation declared that millions of people in the UK were inhaling air too dangerous to breathe. The study found that 44 out of 51 towns and cities failed its test for fine, sooty particles smaller than 2.5 microns across. The particles, known as PM2.5s, have been linked to causing heart disease and premature death and should not exceed 10.5 micrograms per cubic metre of air.
don’t want to breathe polluted air yet also don’t want restrictions imposed on their use of cars, planes and other polluting technologies. We really cannot have it both ways. Polluting technologies have to be restricted and, in the case of things like diesel vehicles, totally eliminated over time. The London Mayor Sadiq Khan has shown the way, putting cutting pollution high on his list of priorities. The first measure has seen a toxic charge (T-Charge) of £10 imposed in the central London congestion area for polluting vehicles. This mainly relates to petrol and diesel vehicles registered before 2006. The plan is to extend the range of the charge out across the majority of London. It is a start but much more needs to be done. Central and local government regulations will help to cut pollution, but people also need to take action individually to live less polluting lives. Drive a little less, use public transport more and reduce those flights. A collective push by everyone can see the scourge of pollution defeated but only if there is a common will to achieve that goal. Writer made in Wanstead Local author Chloë Mayer, who’s just had her first novel published, describes how she almost burst into tears the first time she saw her book on display in Waterstones
I
’ve always dreamed of being an author, ever since I was a little girl at Wanstead Church School. I may have claimed I wanted to be Kylie Minogue as we sang and danced in the playground, but the truth is writing stories was always my favourite thing to do. When I grew up, I decided to become a journalist because then I’d get paid to write stories all day. I worked for the Ilford Recorder at the beginning of my career, before going on to various national newspapers. I was lucky enough to travel the world and spent several years in Tokyo and Los Angeles. I promised myself that, when I wasn’t so busy, I’d get around to finally writing that novel. But the years slipped by and one day, while I was living in the US, I realised I’d never write a book if I didn’t just sit down and do it. What was I waiting for? Why was I waiting? And so I began to write. I was writing in the heat of a Californian summer, in an apartment that didn’t have air conditioning. I was dreaming of English winters; I was dreaming of ice and snow. It took me a long time to finish my novel because I kept telling myself it was stupid, and I kept giving up. But I always started again, and eventually – a couple of years after I returned home to Wanstead – it was done. My novel, a dark tale of tragedy and murder called The Boy Made of Snow, has just been published. It’s set in a sleepy Kent village in 1944 and revolves around a mother and her little boy who befriend a German prisoner of war. One day, the child tells a lie that will have dangerous consequences.
The book has been well reviewed by the critics, and I’ve even been asked to attend signings. But it was a little moment, when I was alone, that had the biggest effect on me. A day or so after publication, I was in town and popped into the Waterstones at Piccadilly Circus. I thought I might find a copy hidden away on a shelf somewhere. So, it was a shock to see a whole pile of my books displayed on a table. I welled up and had to force myself not to start bawling in the middle of the store in front of everyone! Being an author had been my dream since I was tiny, so to suddenly see my book alongside ‘real’ novels written by ‘real’ authors was overwhelming. It’s been a long road to get here, but I’m so glad I finally did. The Boy Made of Snow is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and is available in hardback and paperback, as an audiobook and e-book. ohammed Rahman grew up in Bangladesh and came to the UK when he was 19. He started working at the Star of India in Leytonstone, then after nine years, moved to Wanstead. Why did you move to Wanstead? I looked everywhere! Ilford, Woodford, Walthamstow and Chingford. Even Bow. But Wanstead was the best place. The people are nice and it’s a lovely area. How long have you had this restaurant in Wanstead? Since September 2010. We started it as a fish restaurant. Running a fish restaurant used up so much time that I had to change. If I had a partner it would have been easier, but you had to get to the market at 3am to have the best choice of fish, although you couldn’t take it away until 5am, and to get top quality ingredients for such a restaurant you have to go to different places for pretty much every item. I was constantly working 12 to 15 hours a day. That didn’t leave time for my kids, and I didn’t want them to go to secondary school on their own. I tried looking for a partner but it didn’t work out. By turning the fish restaurant into an Indian I saved a lot of time. You can get everything you want, from quality chicken to spices, from one shop and they deliver. That gave me time for the children. If you want to give kids a good life, you need to give them time and energy, and changing the restaurant made that possible for me. Can you tell me any strange things that have happened in the restaurant? Actually, there hasn’t been that much. Although, there was one person who asked

for a curry without onions. That feels quite strange as it isn’t really curry without onions. What is the largest number of people you have catered for at one time? One group from a local business brought 70 people here every Christmas. They’ve stopped this year because we don’t sell alcohol anymore. Still, another party that comes every year is still coming this year, which is great. Why did you decide to stop selling alcohol? I made the decision to go halal in January. I had been thinking I wanted to for a long time, but my good customers advised me not to. That made me very uncomfortable so I decided I would sell the business. But then, when I had a potential buyer and it was time to send things to the lawyer, I thought: “No! I can’t do this! Wanstead is lovely. All my

customers are lovely.” I decided to stay and we converted and got halal certification in July. How has it changed business? I have the same customers but while they used to come in to eat, now they get takeaways. The number of takeaways we get has doubled. So, Monday to Thursday is still quite good. Weekends are very hard, though. I know it will take time, and it’s only been five months, but it is very hard. A few of our customers say they find it hard to eat without alcohol but do come to give us support. One group of people said that they don’t drink on Sundays, so they have moved their weekly visit to Sunday so they can eat with us and the lack of alcohol doesn’t matter. We are planning to open for breakfast and lunch. We’re doing different menus, regular sandwiches, gourmet beef, chicken and for
vegans, sweet potato and chickpea burgers, English, Mediterranean and Indian food with a twist. Things like fusion spaghetti that is slightly spicy, cottage pie, puff pastry chicken, keema omelette, daal or tomato soup and chips. We’re also doing masala tea (chai). What about the future? We hope people from further away will slowly get to know about the restaurant. Then, in the future, if things work out, we might do things like Kashmiri chai (a pink-coloured tea with crushed pistachio and almond that takes hours to make). We’ll just have to see. Teaching happiness Following her book launch at Wanstead Golf Club last month, psychotherapist and former teacher Usha Chudasama offers some insight into raising a happy child
I
’m sure you’ll agree with me that parenting isn’t easy! The values we want for our children have been the same for generations. We all want our children to grow up feeling loved, successful and happy. But how do you navigate instiling these values in a world where life has become so busy and stressful, both for children and parents? And how much control do we have to make this a reality for our children? I am a psychotherapist and have been working with children as a teacher, behaviour consultant and school counsellor for over 20 years. In my experience, I have found that when a child feels acknowledged, seen and heard, he will feel connected to you and others and this is the surest way to promote lifelong emotional wellbeing. Fostering quality social connections need to be modelled by responding with empathy, reading together and laughing together. As long as you can offer these things unconditionally, your children will feel acknowledged, loved and cared for and that is a solid foundation for raising a happy child.
child has any issues, be there for them and teach them how to problem-solve. Show they can trust you to help them open up so you can offer solutions and someone to talk to in confidence.
Self-esteem and happiness are closely linked. Praising your child is really important. However, praising them for achievement means your child will think that to get your approval, they need to win every time. Rather, praise the effort, the hard work and persistence it took to get the result rather than just the result. This will instil a ‘growth mindset’ and teach them that skills are learnt over time. Even failure is praised, as testing a hypothesis and lesson learnt. Remember to focus on something that is in your child’s control. “You worked hard on that until it was finished, you showed determination and persistence – well done.” Also, when your
I want to share my knowledge to help more people, by enabling parents to do certain exercises in their own home with their children, to understand the dynamics of family life today and how a parent’s behaviour and experience influences their child.
When I work with children and parents to teach happiness skills, I often tell parents that happy parents are likely to have happy kids. Consequently, I tell parents to nurture themselves and get professional help if needed. Diarise time for rest and relaxation, and time with your partner. A committed relationship will model the same thing for your child.
Your Happy Child, 10 Proven Steps to Raising a Happy Child by Usha Chudasama is available in paperback (£12.99) and on Kindle (£4.99). For more information and to receive the first chapter for free, visit healing-feeling.com/free

aving my artwork featured in Wanstead Village Directory reminds me of working as an illustrator in the early 1980s. Before joining Harrods in 1983, I worked as a freelance illustrator, visiting magazine art editors with my portfolio. My first job was for the now defunct 19 magazine. My wife also worked as an illustrator and her work was, I have to say, more popular than mine! Just married, we briefly moved out of Wanstead
and lived in Grove Green Road in Leyton, returning after 18 months. Working as an illustrator, I was involved in many interesting assignments, from designing a promotional T-shirt for Frankie Goes to Hollywood to painting a large canvas on the floor of The Photographers’ Gallery – when it was near Leicester Square – for a fashion photo shoot. I still regret being turned down to design the cover of the first Now That’s What I Call Music and not getting the job of illustrating the album cover for Starlight Express. Still, it was fun trying! Shown here is 32 High Street, which holds a central position in Wanstead, opposite popular shops and cafés and close to one of our lovely green spaces. It is one of the quirky buildings we have in Wanstead and it makes for an arresting image.
Neil’s 1,000-piece Wanstead jigsaw is priced £18.50, including local delivery (all profits donated to the charity Bloodwise). For more information and to order, email neilgclayden@gmail.com or visit facebook.com/wansteadjigsaw

winning the long fight
Julia McFall of local solicitors Wiseman Lee explains how the Sex (Disqualification) Removal Act of 1919 was the start of a slow process for gender equality in the legal profession
I
n 1922 Carrie Morrison became the first woman solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. It had been a long fight. In the famous case of Bebb vs The Law Society (1913), Gwyneth Bebb and three other women had sought a ruling that they were ‘persons’ within the meaning of the Solicitors Act of 1843 and therefore entitled to be admitted to the roll of solicitors. The court refused to rule on that point saying it was a matter for Parliament, and the following year the Court of Appeal agreed, preferring to rely on a 14th-century authority – Andrew Horne’s The Mirror of Justices – which stated: “all who are not prohibited by law may be attorneys but the law will not suffer women to be attorneys nor infants nor serfs”. It was not until the end of the war and the passing of the Sex (Disqualification) Removal Act in 1919 that the Law Society duly registered the articles of 12 young women, of whom Miss Morrison was the first to qualify as a solicitor of the Supreme Court. Despite this victory, progress was slow. By 1967, 45 years after Carrie Morrison qualified, only 2.7% of all solicitors were women. By 1987 the figure had risen to 16%, a figure which then doubled in the next decade. According to the Solicitors Regulation Authority data from 2015, “overall, women make up 47% of all lawyers in law firms, which is the same as the census data for economically active people”. In 2017 a Rubicon has clearly been crossed, but there is still work to be done. According to a recent article in The Guardian, “despite the fact that women account for 61% of law graduates, only 28% of private practice partners are female. The numbers are similarly troubling at judicial level. England and Wales
Carrie Morrison
have among the lowest proportion of female judges in Europe, and a 2010 Law Society review found that the lack of flexible work opportunities was a significant obstacle to women progressing up the career ladder. The gender pay gap in law is 30%, compared with a UK-wide average of 19%”. On a positive note, of 11 partners at Wiseman Lee, five are women. To celebrate the centenary of the passing of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act of 1919, the First 100 Years project (first100years.org.uk) was created by Dana Denis-Smith, CEO of Obelisk Support. The First 100 Years is a groundbreaking history project, supported by the Law Society and the Bar Council, charting the journey of women in law since 1919. The project is powered by Spark21 (spark21.org), a charity founded to celebrate, inform and inspire future generations of women in the profession. Launching the project, Dana said: “People don’t know their history – who the first woman solicitor was, for instance. There is no archive like the First 100 Years to help us place ourselves in history.” Wiseman Lee is located at 9–13 Cambridge Park, Wanstead – call 020 8215 1000

Best friends forever We should all own a pet for the beneficial effects they have on our health and wellbeing, says cat owner Steve Wilks, as he examines the many and varied ways animals can be our best friends
W
ith almost no effort at all, pets manage to bring so much joy into our lives. They make us laugh, comfort us when we are sick or upset, and are always there for us no matter what. It is no wonder that an estimated 12 million British households choose to keep a pet. Not everyone understands the bond between a human and their furry friend though, or even realises how much pets do for their owners. They can keep you fit. All breeds of dog need regular, daily walks to stay happy and healthy, and so do we! However, we sometimes have the tendency to get a bit lazy. If that sounds like you, a dog is the perfect cure. They make sure you are never lonely. If you live by yourself, or your partner works different shift patterns to you, it can get lonely at home. Cats and dogs make great companions – they will always be waiting for you to come home. They lower your stress levels. Pets can really help us relax. Stroking your cat or simply watching fish swim around a tank can make your worries melt away. Previous studies have proven that pet owners tend to have lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels than people who do not own a pet. They can improve your immune system and help recovery from illness. Pets spend a lot of their time outside and therefore bring all sorts of dirt and germs into your home. This is not necessarily a bad thing – the additional germs can help improve your immunity to colds and other mild illnesses. In fact, previous studies have shown that babies who live with a dog tend to experience fewer infections and are generally healthier than those who do not.
Pets are increasingly being brought into hospitals to encourage patient recovery. It was for this reason that PAWS For People was founded by Lynne Robinson. The charity focuses on the healing aspect of pet therapy. Does that mean medicine is going to the dogs? Yes, but in a good way. Pet therapy is gaining fans in healthcare and beyond. It is no secret that a dog’s sense of smell is incredible, but did you know that some canines can detect cancer? Several pet owners have reported their dog saved their life, after they noticed they were constantly pawing at, sniffing or licking a tumour hidden beneath their skin. There was also a recent story on the remarkable bond between an autistic girl and the cat that brought her out of her shell. Six-year-old Iris Grace Halmshaw was once afraid of water but can now be seen swimming alongside her feline friend Thula. Looking after a pet is a big responsibility, but when you consider all the benefits above, they make all that hard work worthwhile. Whether you choose to keep a cat, dog, horse or hamster, they will make a great companion. For more information on PAWS For People, visit pawsforpeople.org

winter in Wanstead
86
Wanstead Village Directory
Members of a photography club for those aged 55 and over will be displaying their work at Wanstead Library this month. Among the images on show will be a number of winter views of Wanstead. Here, group leader Colin Page presents his Wanstead Lamps photo, and invites other silver snappers to get involved
T
his image was taken last winter on George Green. I had put the location on hold until the weather was right as I did not like the background of surrounding houses and just wanted to show off the wonderful lamps. You can just about make out a mother taking her children to school as it was early in the morning. I added some grain in Photoshop to give the fog extra texture because it appeared too dull and smooth. I also removed some tree branches to give a more minimalist feel. I have been running the Age UK photography group in Wanstead on and off for about four years now. I was recovering from a lifechanging – and life-saving – operation that involved having most of my stomach taken away. I then decided to pursue my love of photography and this gave my life some purpose and meaning, and I wanted to share my insights with others. Topics we cover regularly include perspective, photo manipulation, still life, portraiture, landscape and macro lenses. So, if this exhibition inspires you, do come and join us. The exhibition will run from 3 to 24 December at Wanstead Library. For more information, call 020 8989 6338

Martin&Co sales & lettings
Reaching acRoss London Coming into the Christmas period and into the new year, property sales can stagnate, and properties can simply sit on the market as buyers are pre-occupied and not out house hunting. Independent property portal Rightmove traditionally experiences its busiest time over the Christmas and new year period as people are at home on their computers searching and thinking about new year’s resolutions and making that big move in 2018. With Martin & Co we don’t have to simply rely on buyers finding you on Rightmove like almost all of the other high street agents, we can pitch your property across our network of London offices and it will hit buyers in different parts of London that may not have even heard of or considered moving to Wanstead.
