Welcome... Adapting to change is an important concept in just about every area of life. The office worker learning to use new computer software as their company expands; the salmon migrating earlier every year as the water temperatures rise; or the American citizen preparing to embrace a change of leadership as the world holds its breath. There is comfort in continuity and trepidation in change, so for many the default preference carries the fewest risks. But when change is thrust upon us those most adaptable will prosper – something Charles Darwin knew only too well and something perhaps certain groups of protesters and politicians are yet to learn. At Christmas, there are many changes – both physically in our surroundings and mentally and emotionally in our outlook and priorities. It’s a change that is relatively short-lived, but one that has the power to influence many: the festive TV ads, the upbeat promotions and the seasonal food can all leave their mark on our wallets and waists. However, it’s a two-way street and as much as Christmas can instigate a change within us as individuals, we as a community can have an equally significant impact on Christmas itself, on a local scale at least. The shops we support, the events we attend and the people we help – just as at any other time of the year – are instrumental in sustaining and growing our community Christmas celebrations. We may not have migrating salmon in Wanstead and President Trump may or may not have an impact on our daily lives here, but change, big and small, is all around us. From farmers’ stalls (see page 7) to park festivals (see page 28) and from boundary rules (see page 7) to swimming pools (see page 6), the ripples of change reach us all at some stage and in some way – whether we sink or learn to swim Lee Marquis, Editor is up to each of us.

Leader of Redbridge Council proposes a swimming pool for Wanstead Councillor Jas Athwal, the leader of Redbridge Council, has announced that a swimming pool will be built in Wanstead. The plans were revealed last month as part of the Labour council administration’s draft budget consultations. “The current facilities in the south of the borough are currently at capacity, and we want to make sure residents across Redbridge are able to enjoy a healthy lifestyle… As part of its ongoing commitment towards increasing swimming provision in the borough we propose to create a new public pool in Wanstead,” said

Aldersbrook Farmers’ Market to return for Christmas and 2017

Final recommendations for new ward boundaries published

After a successful first market on Halloween weekend, the community-run Aldersbrook Farmers’ Market will return for a Christmasthemed indoor event at Aldersbrook Bowling Club on 10 December (10am to 2pm). “Our inaugural market was a great success and we had lots of social interaction and people coming to pick up some tasty produce. This is all about socialising and having a focal point in Aldersbrook,” said organiser Mark McKee, who hopes to run the market monthly throughout 2017. Visit wavidi.co/afm

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has published its final recommendations for new ward boundaries in Redbridge. The proposals – which must now be approved by parliament before being implemented at the local elections in 2018 – will see the removal of the current Snaresbrook and Wanstead wards with the creation of a Wanstead Village ward. Last month’s publication follows an eight-week public consultation on the draft proposals. Visit wavidi.co/wards

Handymen

Two photographers from Wanstead have opened an exhibition of their work at Gallery 84 on Nightingale Lane. Among Helen Simpson and Adam Lee Brown’s 27 images on display are photographs of a barber shop in Wanstead and a church on the Galápagos Islands. “Both have very different photography styles. Helen’s photos are powerful black and white images, while Adam’s are beautiful, subtle architectural studies,” said gallery owner Geoff Wilkinson. The exhibition will be open until mid-January. Local Humanists meet in Wanstead to Join the Christmas fancy dress pony discuss President-elect Trump parade through Aldersbrook

Members of the East London Humanists met at Wanstead Library last month to discuss the potential impact President-elect Donald Trump may have on the world. “While Humanists have no particular party political affiliation, there is much concern that a Trump presidency will result in a major setback for the rights, liberal values and social progress we have long fought for,” said Paul Kaufman, chair of the group. The topics discussed included Trump’s approach to women’s rights and climate change. Visit wavidi.co/elh

Wanstead Society trees

The Duke: a pub you love

The Wanstead Society has made an appeal to Redbridge Council to reconsider a proposal that seeks to abolish the budget for replacing street trees. “I understand that budgets are under pressure but a decision to not replace trees on streets if damaged, dead or diseased is counter-productive,” said Scott Wilding, chair of the Society. The community group has itself planted over 60 trees in the local area since it was founded in 1997.

Wanstead pub The Duke featured in the results of Time Out’s Love London Awards, which were announced last month. The Nightingale Lane establishment was named the winner in the local area’s bars and pubs category of the annual awards, which are subject to a public vote. “We are grateful for the support and the community spirit that is alive and well in Wanstead. So a big thank you from us,” said a spokesperson for the venue.

Saba received her award from former England player James Taylor

Saba Nasim, the captain of Wanstead’s ladies’ cricket team, was named coach of the year by national cricket charity Chance to Shine during an award ceremony at Lord’s cricket ground last month. “I’ve been playing cricket for quite a while and just love to give back to the community,” said Saba, who is a solicitor by profession and coaches girls’ cricket during her free time at Wanstead Leisure Centre. “We’ve grown from a handful of girls to over 70 registered participants… It’s amazing to see the girls grow in confidence and ability.”

A Wanstead resident is urging the community to sign a petition asking TfL to fit all London buses with anti-idling devices. “London bus drivers do not all switch off their engines when their buses are parked. Anti-idling devices would help reduce emissions,” said Maria Sheppard, who started the petition because of the noise and air pollution caused by buses waiting at the bus stop next to Christchurch Green. The campaign has received the support of Redbridge councillors and John Cryer MP. Visit wavidi.co/antiidle

Forest School honour former director of music at Lord Mayor’s Show

Artist presents work inspired by UK and Arctic landscapes

Forest School’s Big Band took part in the Lord Mayor’s Show last month. The event, now in its 801st year, marked the first public engagement of the new Lord Mayor, Dr Andrew Parmley, who was a former director of music at the Snaresbrook school. “Dr Parmley founded the Big Band so it was a fitting tribute that, almost 30 years later, the ensemble would perform for him in the procession that marks his inauguration,” said a school spokesperson. The band’s float took inspiration from the school’s location on the edge of Epping Forest.

This month Wanstead Library will host a display of watercolour and ceramic artworks inspired by the structures, textures and colours found in the natural landscape. The exhibition – which will run from 5 to 31 December in the library foyer – presents the work of Woodford Green resident and former art teacher Jenny Waterhouse, whose creations were influenced by the destinations of a recent cruise, including Neolithic sites around the UK and the mountains and glaciers of Greenland and Iceland.

A local 14-yearold’s musical potential has been acknowledged in a national competition. Betsy Selner, from Wanstead, beat over 400 other entrants in the National Lottery’s Big Music Project Competition, which embarked on a nationwide search to find musicians to create a soundtrack for YouTube superstar Dan TDM’s online channel. Betsy and two other finalists will meet Dan TDM, a professional gamer, at Capital FM’s studios this month.

hat could be nicer than a brisk winter walk in Wanstead Park followed by a seasonal warm-up at the Temple? Wanstead Park on a Sunday morning in December: crisp leaves on the ground, stark shapes of trees denuded of their summer colour against a cold blue sky, wintering ducks on the lakes… Follow that up on Sunday 18 December by dropping in at the Temple for some warming Christmas spirit. Picture this lovely old building decorated for the festive season with woodland berries, such as holly and ivy, and even mistletoe. The sounds of live music, song and Christmas recitations will be heard once again in this small but lovely 18th-century summer house, once part of the great grounds of the now vanished Wanstead House. Imagine the scene 200 years ago: after a pleasant walk around the gardens of the great house, ladies coyly hide behind their fans, drinking hot chocolate and flirting with handsome gentlemen in cravats, with pleasant music tinkling away in the background. Now imagine Christmas 21st-

century style in the Temple: our ‘mistletoe miscellany’ of words and music will celebrate the true spirit of Christmas, with Santa hats and reindeer antlers rather than fans and cravats! Members of the Aldersbrook Players and the Woodhouse Players will be giving readings and recitations from old favourites, such as Dickens, plus more modern comic poets; Russell Kenny will be playing the ukelele; the Aldersbrook Community Choir will be singing traditional Christmas carols, which you are free to join in with; and local maestro of the keyboard Cliff Oliver will be entertaining us on the piano. Children will be able to enjoy Christmas craft activities all day, making lanterns, paper chains and Christmas cards. Christmas stories, such as The Night before Christmas, never fail to enchant us all. And if that’s not enough, the Friends of Wanstead Parklands will serve mulled wine, hot drinks and home-made Christmas goodies, both savoury and sweet.

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands invite you to join them at the park’s Temple this month for a celebration of all things Christmas – past and present. Here, Gill James explains why they have one eye on the future as well The Temple is one of our local treasures, a Grade II listed building dating from the 1760s and a survival from the heyday of Wanstead Park. It is looked after by the City of London, but recently there have been difficulties in finding enough staff to keep it open at weekends. To help remedy this situation, the City of London is looking for people who would like to volunteer at the venue on an occasional basis. Volunteers will be enrolled as Epping Forest Visitor Centre volunteers to comply with insurance requirements and required to wear the Epping Forest uniform. A half-day induction event will be arranged for those who are interested in joining the Temple volunteer rota and training will be given in the basic requirements, such as fire evacuation procedures, health and safety issues and a brief history lesson. Volunteers will need to be enthusiastic and willing to share this enthusiasm with the public, and be prepared to greet visitors and offer them a brief introduction to the Temple and Wanstead Park. Park users have expressed an interest in seeing the Temple used for more events. Plans

are therefore afoot to make the Winter Temple Wanste fun at the available Temp ad Pa © Tim le, rk Reder for hire for / timre derph otogra phy.co weddings. m The Friends of Wanstead Parklands is also proposing a series of small monthly events spread over the year, such as talks and children’s craft activities. So, watch this space and come and enjoy the last opening day before Christmas at our most atmospheric local building. ‘Mistletoe’ is a free drop-in event from 11am to 2.30pm on Sunday 18 December (charges apply for refreshments and some children’s activities). Wonderful lives Carole Edrich has interviewed over 30 Angels in Wanstead in the past three years. Now, she has big plans to help others find and praise their own community heroes and needs your support to make it happen

G

ood deeds are done every day, without thought of recognition or of anything other than the deed itself and its recipients. I started the Angels in Wanstead column in this publication – which is voluntary – because I thought it would be nice to celebrate just how many wonderful people there are in and around Wanstead, whilst showing them they’re appreciated by us all. My vision has since grown. Imagine how it would be if the youth of Wanstead, Leytonstone, Walthamstow and Woodford were able to find angels in their own communities, photograph and talk to the people and get their articles published in their own local papers. I think it will help them in a number of ways. Investigating and talking to real people (as opposed to typing away on smartphones) is an important skill for everyone and a great potential career for some. Finding angels can be as simple as asking in local shops or talking to family, and it leads to a greater level of communication between people of all generations. It’s great to see your name in print and people who have done wonderful, selfless things acknowledged, which is nice for them and great for the communities involved. If we – and the kids I hope to work with – become more aware of just how many good people surround us, and in so doing, become implicitly aware that a good deed or thoughtful act, however tiny, can have huge benefits to everyone around, then this must surely benefit all our communities further and counter the thoughtlessness that seems to pervade peoples’ behaviour more and more.

The Angels in Wanstead series began life as a calendar

I plan to work with dancers, local schools and youth clubs, training and mentoring them where appropriate and helping them to find, interview and photograph their own local heroes. I’ll get their work published, too. This needs money, so I am starting with a local raffle. Tickets are £1 each or five for £4. You can buy them at The Larder, The Closet, Wanstead Art Shop and The Currant in Wanstead, at Le Petit Corner in Leytonstone and at Café Bonito in Walthamstow. Winners will be drawn on 21 January and generous prizes have already been pledged or given by the Wanstead Village Directory, Images In Frames, The Closet, The Cuckfield, The Currant, The Larder, Majestic Wine, Sumo Fresh, Wanstead Fish, Wanstead Pharmacy and Zoology. There are more prizes coming and I’ll provide more details along with the location and time of the draw in next month’s issue. So, please buy a ticket or two and help us sing the praises of our local angels. For more information on Carole’s Angels series or to nominate someone for a future article, visit wavidi.co/angels

12 tips of Christmas

Christmas is a busy time and sometimes we forget to take basic security precautions, says Steve Wilks, Neighbourhood Watch coordinator for Wanstead, who offers 12 security tips for the festive season

C

hristmas is a time of great preparation with many distractions. Here are my top 12 tips for protecting your home and belongings at this time of year and for ensuring Father Christmas is the only unseen visitor who enters your home this December. 1. Hide gifts: make sure gifts and valuables – wrapped and unwrapped – are not visible from any home or car windows. 2. Bikes: if Father Christmas brings you a bike for Christmas (lucky you!), you can register it at bikeregister.com. 3. Security markings: mark any expensive gifts you receive (write your postcode with a UV pen). This will make it harder for burglars to sell the items and allow police to return them to you. Let your home insurance company know if you have new expensive items. 4. Inventory: make an inventory of the most important and valuable items in your home and keep the list in a safe place (not on a laptop, in case that gets stolen). You could use immobilise.com, an online personal belongings inventory service. 5. Gift packaging: don’t put gift packaging boxes out for recycling or leave them sticking out of your bin. Thieves will notice! Store boxes out of sight until you can dispose of them at the local recycling site. 6. Entrances: lock all doors and windows, leave a light on and draw the curtains if you go out after dark. Keep your doors and windows locked from the inside, even when you are inside your home. Don’t leave window keys in their locks.

7. Alarm wiring: check that all wiring is fully concealed. A burglar could look for places to disconnect the security system. 8. Outbuildings: keep sheds and garages locked at all times and don’t leave spare keys inside them. There has been a spate of crimes in Wanstead involving outbuildings. 9. Burglar alarm: if you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed and tell your neighbours that it’s been repaired. 10. Kitchen cupboards: stash your small valuables inside boxes and cans in the kitchen – the last place burglars will look! 11. Lost key cover: if you lose your keys, change the locks immediately. Check lost key cover on your home insurance policy. 12. Emergency contacts: phone 101 to contact your local police team in a non-emergency situation or 999 if it is an emergency. The next Redbridge Neighbourhood Watch meeting for the Wanstead and Snaresbrook wards will take place at Wanstead House on Friday 27 January from 7pm – visit redbridgenhw.info

Atypical day out Organisers of a new festival taking place in Wanstead next year invite you to pick up your instruments or polish your act and be part of what is set to be an unusual day out in the park. Jeanne Holland reports

W

anstead is becoming a big east London destination with thriving arts, culture, food and drink. And now there’s the opportunity to share all this and more at the East.Not.East Festival, a new platform event coming to the unique Wanstead Park in 2017, designed to marry up its rich historic legacy with what’s happening now and to toast more brilliance to come. The event has two main aims. The first is to celebrate Wanstead Park as our very own listed landmark, which is of immense local as well as national importance, but still relatively undiscovered. Loved by locals, the parklands offer a fantastic community space appealing to a whole range of interests, and now the East.Not.East Festival is set to platform this undiscovered gem and share the secret! The second aim is to produce an umbrella event that makes accessible the many varied expressions, activities, arts, culture and events that thrive locally and place them firmly in what the best of London has to offer. Happily, as the organisers of this new festival, we know a thing or two about celebrating the local and underappreciated, as we recently staged the sell-out Hitchcock’s Home event in Leytonstone, which brought the iconic ‘Hitch’ back into the hearts and minds of the community. So Wanstead Park, here we come! For the past 17 years, Wanstead Park has been home to the successful Music in the Park, and if you thought you’d be missing out on a popular summer event next year, you won’t be. The East.Not.East Festival is going ‘local with a twist’, with an event that’s completely new and exciting, so now’s the time to save the date in your diaries. The festival will take place around the park’s Temple and promises a fresh programme of events, featuring main

stage live music, curated tents with pop-up talks, debates, acoustics, comedy and other performances, plus some curated nods to local notables, including Hitchcock. You’ll also get to enjoy art in situ with improvised gallery areas. And there’s more – all this will be accompanied by a choice of the finest food and drink our city has to offer. In order you don’t miss out on any of the action, we will make sure that all events are carefully scheduled so you get to see and do everything. And it all takes place next July, so there’s plenty of time to get involved. We are currently looking for: acts and artists (don’t wait for Edinburgh Fringe), curators, volunteers, stewards and litter pickers. There will be lots more happening in the meantime and you can keep up to date with all the latest information on the festival website. The East.Not.East Festival – which is supported by East London Radio, Wanstead Tap and Newham Bookshop – will take place in Wanstead Park on 15 July 2017. Hammers favourite Frank McAvennie playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Upton Park in 1990

Good shot! W

hen my elder brother took me to see my first professional football match at West Ham in 1964 as a seven-year-old, little did he know that his younger brother was experiencing his first steps towards becoming a football fanatic. Watching football was soon to become a weekly ritual as I took the 162 bus to Upton Park from Bush Wood and the Central Line to Brisbane Road to see West Ham and Leyton Orient play on alternate Saturdays. Fortunately, my parents were unaware of the rise of hooliganism, so added the cost of admission to my pocket money allowance to enable me to get my weekly fix.

I remember those early days in snippets: at West Ham, the peanut sellers squeezing their way through the packed terraces, selling my programme back to the vendor when I realised I was a tanner (5p) short to get in to see a match versus Liverpool, eating chips in Barking Road on a cold winter’s day; and at Orient, looking over towards the knot of O’s fans chanting for the team on the West Side under the floodlights and a shot from Vic Halom bouncing back off the terracing and hitting me on the head. As the years progressed, Orient became the team I supported, attracted by the intimacy of the club and the fact they trained nearby in

Football photographer and lifelong Wanstead resident Tim Reder has recently published two books about West Ham United and Leyton Orient. In the first of a series of articles, Tim offers some insight into the start of his photographic journey the sports ground in Bush Wood, Wanstead, allowing me to chat with the players and collect their autographs. Not surprisingly, when I took up photography I chose Leyton Orient, then West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur – who by that time I was also watching when possible – to be my preferred subjects. I had a very definite idea of what I wanted to achieve, aiming to make both a pictorial record of the clubs and to record an important part of my life. I photographed not just the action but the stadiums and pictures of many of the familiar faces who I had seen at matches over the years.

An exhibition on Leyton Orient at the Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow broke its attendance records, though the soundtrack of the crowd that was activated on entry meant the gallery warders were pleased when it was over! Come on you O’s: Leyton Orient 1985–89 and The Hammers: a Photographic Study of West Ham United 1988–90 by Tim Reder are available for £15.99 each (plus £4 postage) from timrederphotography.com For more information, call 07833 381 909

Walking through time

The Newham Striders is a walking group inextricably linked to Wanstead through its former leader Stanley Silburn. In the fourth of a series of interviews, Jane Grell finds out about a walk with Clare Balding

F

or the past 12 years, 93-year-old Stanley has led a walking group in Wanstead Park. Though in later life he moved to East Ham, he’s nonetheless an oral historian for this area, which is what made him such a superb walk leader. Stanley, you have recently retired as walk leader for the Newham Striders. When you look back, is there a particularly memorable walk? I think it’s the day that Clare Balding of Radio 4’s Ramblings came to walk with us. We started at the Eagle Pond car park, through the forest in the direction of Chingford, then under an A406 subway. We came out of the subway and up onto a huge, circular, grassy mound, where we walked on water. You mean, walked on water like Jesus? No, that’s just my little joke. You see, beneath the grassy mound is a reservoir which is no longer in use. From the reservoir, we took a short cut across a bridge over the A406. Crossing this bridge is a hairy experience as it was built with no hand railings. I would advise people afraid of heights to close their eyes and hold hands. From there, we headed along to the Rodney ‘Gypsy’ Smith memorial stone. Who was Rodney ‘Gypsy’ Smith? He was a wandering preacher, born in a caravan to a family of Romany Methodist preachers. He was known throughout the local area, as in that corner of the forest was where he hitched his caravan. The pathway continues for a couple of miles down through to the Centenary Walk near Higham’s Park. Every year, hundreds of people do this 18-mile walk from Forest Gate to Epping to commemorate the City of London’s securing the forest for the general public. Along the Higham’s Park Lake is a huge tree with iron

bars. I reckon that would have been a hanging tree in the old days. Creepy! Another of my little jokes. I used to warn the lady walkers not to linger at the back in case they got kidnapped by Vikings coming down the River Ching in search of brides. Surely they knew you were kidding? I suppose so, but I hardly had any stragglers of the fairer sex on that part of the walk! On the way back from Highams Park we crossed over the main bridge on Forest Road where you have a splendid view of London, right up to Alexandra Palace in Haringey. There are also many fruit trees: apples, pears and plums. Trouble is, no one could reach them as they lean dangerously over the A406. Did Clare Balding enjoy the walk? She said she did, although I’m sure she must have done walks far more spectacular than ours. At any rate, the programme gave us good publicity. As a result, many new walkers joined the Newham Striders. The Newham Striders meet on Saturdays at 9am near St Mary’s Church, Wanstead.

The choice is (still) yours We all hope it will never happen to us, but the possibility of losing mental capacity is something we all need to prepare for, says Beverley Browne, a partner at local solicitors Wiseman Lee

A

s we approach our threescore years and 10 (although in the UK, the average life expectancy for women is around 83 and 79 for men) we may turn our minds to making a will, but do we consider the possibility of losing mental capacity and needing assistance during our lifetimes? We all hope it will never happen to us, but if it does and no arrangements have been made in advance, the difficulties for our families and friends can be immense. This is where Lasting Powers of Attorney can be so useful. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: one for property and finance and one for care and welfare. They are separate documents and you can make either or both. If you should lose mental capacity in the future and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney for property and finance, then someone (and that person will not be chosen by you) will need to apply to the Court of Protection asking to be appointed as your deputy to make decisions for you. This is a lengthy and expensive process and at a time that is particularly stressful for your family. The delay whilst the application is dealt with can cause difficulties if, for example, access to your savings is needed to pay household bills or care home fees. There are annual ongoing costs and the deputy would have to submit regular reports to the Court of Protection. If there is a registered Lasting Power of Attorney in place already, then you have made the choice of who can act for you in these circumstances and the document can be used immediately. When the document is prepared, it can be tailored to meet individual circumstances. If it is not restricted to be operative only if you lose mental capacity, then it can also be useful if, for example, you

are away on holiday, suffer from physical frailty or would simply like someone else to deal with your financial matters on your behalf. The Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney is slightly different because it can only come into effect if you lose mental capacity. Again, you can choose who can make decisions for your care and welfare if you are unable to do so yourself. Without this type of Power of Attorney, although family should be consulted, decisions relating to your medical and general care might ultimately be made by doctors or social workers. These documents can be put in place and then, hopefully, remain in a drawer unused. But if the need arises, you have already made the choice of who can make decisions for you. There is no time delay in applying to the court and no ongoing expenses (the one-off fee for the preparation of the documents will already have been paid by you). So, if you are thinking of putting your affairs in order, then consider putting one or both of these Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. MOUTHAWARE? T HE NUMBER of people in the UK diagnosed with mouth cancer has increased by a third in the last decade – the disease now takes more lives each year than road accidents. However, figures also reveal that while the survival rate is 50% after late diagnosis, it is 90% after early diagnosis – highlighting the importance of having your mouth checked by a trained professional.

ast month, I told you how, back in 1921, three wealthy local sisters generously donated Nutter Field to the people of Wanstead for their recreation and leisure. A football team called RAFARNO (Royal Air Force Army Royal Navy Officers) was established in 1948 and later renamed Snaresbrook Football Club in 1963.

Snaresbrook Youth celebrate winning the Chelmsford League (2007–2008 season) as under-17s. Toby Smyth, who represented England as a schoolboy in ISFA, is pictured far left

In 1998, whilst the adult team played in the Essex Business Houses League, a new under8s side was launched as Snaresbrook Youth. The current team manager, Paul Staniford, set up the youth side to cater for his son Sam, born in 1990, and his pals, at first just playing friendlies.

Most of the youths were in the main adult team by the age of 21, and many still represent Snaresbrook’s first team today.

The following season (1999–2000) they entered the East London and Essex League under-9s, incredibly winning it that very first year. Snaresbrook Youth carried on there for the next two seasons, winning the league again as under-11s (2001–2002) and adding the League Cup to complete the double. As under-12s, they progressed to the Echo League winning promotion to the Echo Premier League in 2003–2004, where they later gained runners-up honour in 2006–2007. “Generally, in our junior football we were always known as a good footballing side, but sometimes fell short in the physical side,” said Paul.

In later issues, we’ll look at how allegiance to Snaresbrook FC never wanes, the fight for a club bar and some of their brilliant first achievements.

The youth team’s achievements have also included: winners of the tough Chelmsford League in their first season (2007–2008); Chelmsford League Cup runners-up and Essex Trophy finalists (2009–2010); league runnersup, League Cup winners and Essex Junior Cup finalists (2011–2012). By now, reaching adulthood from 16, some of the youth side were fed into the Snaresbrook adult team, filling gaps as older players retired.

That side remained with the Essex Business Houses League until 2013, then joining the Essex Olympian Football League in senior division three. Winning two consecutive promotions, they’re currently playing in senior division one, finishing third last season.

Snaresbrook FC fact One Snaresbrook Youth player progressed to representing England at international schoolboy level. Goalkeeper Toby Smyth, now 26, played for the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) from 2006 to 2009 (including playing against Poland’s national youth side). With ISFA, Toby also played for UK club teams, including Blackburn Rovers under-18s. Snaresbrook Football Club compete in the Prokit Essex Olympian Football League. FOREST SCHOOL

College Place, Snaresbrook, E17 3PY

Forest School’s Big Band brave weather to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show last month The procession, which dates back to the 16th century, saw over 7,000 people take part with hundreds of thousands lining the streets of the City of London.

The float was then constructed on-site by the School’s in-house Estates Team, led by Jason Stalley and Rob Coles, who worked around the clock to bring it all together.

The Big Band performed in the show on a float, which took inspiration from Forest’s location on the edge of Epping Forest. The show, now in its 801st year, celebrates the first public engagement by the new Lord Mayor, Dr Andrew Parmley.

Charlie Palline, who is also an Old Forester and now works as a professional artist, painted the iconic London skyline which can be seen around the top of the float. The skyline, which includes the Shard, St Paul’s and the Gherkin, can be seen from the top of the School’s roof.

Dr Parmley is a former Director of Music at Forest (1984 - 1993). During his time at the School, he founded the Big Band so it was a fitting tribute that almost 30 years later, the ensemble would perform for him in the procession that marks his inauguration. Led by visiting music teachers Phil Knights and Simon Golding, the ensemble performed a selection of classic numbers as the procession moved passed Mansion House, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Courts of Justice. This summer Old Foresters William Couzens and Lewis Boyce, both of whom have an interest in graphic design, worked on bringing the float, which was almost 13 metres long, to life. William and Lewis worked on the theme which celebrated the school’s close location to the city, while being surrounded by ancient forest.

Celebrating the forest theme the entry included over 50 laurel bushes, supplied by former parent Michelle Partos, which will now be planted back into the School as a lasting legacy of the show and continues the School’s commitment to protecting the environment. Ahead of the show, on Friday 11 November, the float was waved off by the School’s Pre-Prep and Prep pupils as it made its way to the city. Many Forest staff, pupils and parents lined the route cheering the passing float including Mr Marcus Cliff Hodges, Acting Warden, Mr David Wilson, Chairman of the Governors, Mrs Diane Coombs, Bursar and Mr James Sanderson, Deputy Head Co-Curricular who watched from the grandstand by St Paul’s Cathedral.

The joker returns We asked former Wanstead High School student Sir Tony Robinson a few questions ahead of an appearance at the Sir James Haweky Hall in Woodford Green this month

S

ir Tony Robinson – who lived in South Woodford as a child and attended Wanstead High School – will be returning to where he grew up in December to talk about his long-awaited memoir. Tell us about your local connections? Just before the Second World War, Mum and Dad (who were East Enders) moved down the Lea Bridge Road and bought a semi-detached in South Woodford o n Raymond Avenue on the Firs Estate. My whole childhood was spent in South Woodford. I went to the St Philips and St James Church on Grove Road. I went to Snaresbrook College and then Woodford Green Prep School. I spent as much time as I could at the Majestic Theatre (now the Odeon) on the High Road and in the plaza on George Lane where the Sainsbury’s is. Why did you choose the Sir James Hawkey Hall for your event? My mum and dad loved amateur acting and my first performances were at the Sir James Hawkey Hall, either in poetry competitions or in plays. So coming back here is visiting the birthplace of my career. What is your most striking memory of South Woodford? Walking down George Lane to South Woodford station. I always used the Central Line when I was a child actor in the West End. Did you enjoy your time at Wanstead High? I hated school and bunked off whenever I could and spent my time reading behind the bookshelves in South Woodford Library. What teacher from Wanstead most influenced you and why? My most influential teacher wasn’t from Wanstead High School. It was my elocution

A young Tony at his South Woodford home in 1958

teacher Ms Philips, who lived in Chingford and ran private classes for five shillings a term. Do you still keep in touch with any childhood friends? I still see Susan Pears, the girl who lived next door but one. I often bump into old school mates, and a few have turned up at my book tour in places as far away as Nottingham. When was the last time you came back here? I used to come back often until my mum died about 12 years ago. Both my parents suffered from dementia and I have since become an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society. One final serious question. Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom. Boom, Boom... Boom? The finest poem ever written! Tony will be discussing his memoir at the Sir James Hawkey Hall on Broomhill Road, Woodford Green on 7 December from 7.30pm (tickets: £25, including a copy of the book). Angel update Carole Edrich gives a quick update on some of the community heroes featured in our long-running Angels in Wanstead series of articles and explains why her expanding project now warrants a new name

N

early three years ago when I volunteered to celebrate the people of our community by writing the Angels in Wanstead column, I had no idea that I would still be planning to write it in 2017. Indeed, I’ve discovered so many wonderful people that I now believe the project could run and run. Next year, I hope to expand it to Woodford, Newham and beyond, and whilst the project’s Wanstead roots (and my roots) will always be strong, our future angels may reside a little further afield. There are sure to be more angels waiting to be discovered in Wanstead, but they will now be known simply as my Angels, to reflect my aspirations and our wider neighbourhood links. Since this is a voluntary project, I want to get others involved and this will be dependent on you and the grants that I will apply for. Meanwhile, as it’s Christmas, I thought I’d bring you up to date with as many angels as I can. Colin Bird, our first angel of Wanstead published in January 2014, is still running to form. When I asked him how he was and whether he was still giving lifts to little old ladies, his response was: “All is fine. Old ladies of all sizes still being lifted.” Sandra Irwin of Coco still supports people who are fighting or recovering from cancer with tea and friendly conversation, and the shop’s last charity day raised money for the new cancer unit at Guy’s Hospital. One block along, Marc Mountney of Zoology still provides free wig styling to those undergoing cancer treatment and still supports his team, including Lola Shorter, in their charitable activities. Another block away from Wanstead Station you’ll still find Monica Bujor selling The Big Issue. She asked to say hello to everyone she knows.

Jane Elspeth Millar and Nadia’s book launch in October was so successful they’ve arranged a paperback print run. From The Larder, Richard Harris is happy in his new job working with autistic children, Olivia Smart and Rosie Evans Hill are doing well in their careers and Emma Wakeling’s email autoresponse says that she will return as PR and press coordinator for the Jack Petchey Foundation (exactly the kind of job she told us all she wanted) in January 2017. Harry Gobind (Harikrishnnan Puneet) is still teaching and preaching in India, supported by his relatives in India and his son Dill at the Wanstead Art Shop. Vanessa Downie is now running a Bollywood class for senior citizens with Khyal Arts. She says they’re the first to do an inclusive community-focused classical Indian dance class at Bhakti Yoga Centre. Meanwhile, Shardae Rose is teaching dance, as she hoped, at Wanstead House. Ajay Rathod of KL Men’s Hairdressing in Leytonstone is preparing for his trip to India and still donating all tips to charity, and on the other side of the road, Toby Hartley and his partner Rachel are giving free coffees in return for reasonable donations between 9am and 11am every Tuesday in December at Le Petit Corner. Proceeds will go to Alzheimer’s research, children with cancer or both, so if you have an opinion, let them know. Larraine Fallows of Wanstead dentist Smile in London told me: “I’ve got some races, but because I bled everybody dry – people were so incredibly generous – I’m just running, for now… I’m sure I will raise more money in the future, but not for now.”

December 2016

After more than a decade in the UK and having founded Mana Aroha – the charity that brings two lucky Maori or Pacific Islanders over to London each year, mentoring them afterwards to help them bring back the experiences to their own communities – Kerrin Leone is back in New Zealand. Even though she’s now expecting twins, she is working as chair for the charity and becoming as significant a contributor to her community there as she was when I met her in Wanstead. David Etherton told me: “I’ve just returned from MS Action in Walthamstow. Woodford Green Rotary Club presented them with eight chairs totalling nearly £1,000. What a fabulous place it is! It survives entirely on donations.” It’s not all good news, though. I met Frank Charles in a queue in Wanstead Hospital in the summer. He wasn’t very well at the time, so I hope he’s feeling better now. Also, sadly, Christine Anson married her long-time partner and then lost him to cancer only last month. Rather than flowers, the family asked for charity donations, so if you feel it appropriate, leave her a donation with a note at the British Heart Foundation shop where she volunteers. I’m sorry I’ve not managed to write about all of Wanstead’s wonderful angels, but it’s a matter of space. I’ll do my best to tell you about some of the others in January. Meanwhile, I hope you’ll join me in appreciating how great it is to be part of a community of such wonderful, genuine people. All the very best of the season to you all! Child of the fifties Ahead of a Wanstead Historical Society talk about growing up in the 1950s, author, historian and baby boomer Norman Jacobs recalls the advent of rock ‘n’ roll, prefabs and welfare orange juice

T

his month I shall be giving a talk to the Wanstead Historical Society based on my book Pie ‘n’ Mash & Prefabs, which was published last year. The story behind both the talk and the book is essentially that of an ordinary working-class boy (me) growing up in the East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s. I was born shortly after the end of the Second World War, at a time when thousands of couples and families in the East End had no home of their own because of bomb damage and by a general need to clear away the 19th-century slums – they were living in rented rooms with shared facilities or with parents and in-laws. One solution was to erect prefabs on fields and open spaces to provide temporary accommodation. Prefab was short for ‘prefabricated buildings’ as all the parts of these temporary houses were pre-built in a factory and then put together in kit-style on-site, making them quick and easy to erect. They offered, for the first time, a proper modern home, better than any those families could have dared hope for or aspire to before. It was in one of these ‘modern’ boxes, situated on a 20-acre area of open parkland right next door to Clapton Greyhound Stadium, that I grew up throughout this period. My talk is a look at life as seen through the eyes of a child of an ordinary working-class family, starting in an age of austerity and moving through to the 1960s as this age of cuts gave way to a new affluence. The talk is packed with nostalgic details: the rationing, the bomb sites, the local characters, the street markets, the street traders, the camaraderie and the sheer hard graft needed to keep working-class families going. Welfare orange juice and malt, stodgy school food,

Norman as a child

jumpers for goalposts, Listen with Mother, greyhound racing, pie and mash and the advent of American-style burger bars and labour-saving devices in the home. It is set against the changing times of what was happening in the outside world as young people began, for the first time, to discover their own identity, music and fashion with the advent of rock ‘n’ roll, Teddy Boys, Beatlemania and Mods and Rockers. The talk will be illustrated with photographs of the period, as well as sound recordings and clips of television programmes. You can expect humour and happiness, pathos and sadness, the ordinary and the extraordinary. For those who lived through this period, it will be a nostalgic experience. For those too young to remember, it will show what life was like 50 or 60 years ago and will provide a look back to a way of life that has vanished forever. Norman’s talk will take place at Wanstead Library on 15 December from 8pm (visitors: £3). Call 07949 026 212 Pie ‘n’ Mash & Prefabs is available from John Blake Publishing, priced £7.99. 1482 ...and counting In January, the Wren Wildlife Group set out to find 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. With this figure achieved in June, the target is now 1,500. Tim Harris updates the count

Then, led by the frighteningly knowledgeable Ken Adams and his able assistants Enid Barrie and Sally Gadsdon, a search of Gilbert’s Slade on 7 November produced some interesting, not to mention beautiful, mosses and grasses, though a near absence of fungi. This visit came after a pretty dry spell, but rain in the second week of the month prompted fungi to fruit and helped create a memorable day in the City of London Cemetery a week later. The lawns had yellow and orange fairy clubs, sulphur tufts, chantarelles and pleated inkcaps, while The Birches nature reserve, which hardly anyone ever visits, had an impressive array of fungi, including clouded agarics, stump puffballs, oyster mushrooms, chicken of the woods and dead man’s fingers. The names are almost as impressive as the fungi themselves! The often tricky identification of some fungi from this outing is still a work in progress, so more about them in the next and final instalment of this series, which we will bring to you in February after the final counts are collated in January.

I

n last month’s column I may have sounded a little downbeat about our prospects for finding new species during November, generally considered to be a dull month in the world of nature. How wrong I was! At the very end of October, a great grey shrike was a very brief visitor to Wanstead Flats, departing before any bar three local naturalists had managed to clap eyes on it. This bird, a migrant from northern Europe, is by now probably hunting on some wind-blasted heath in Surrey or Hampshire, the initial appeal of the Flats not being enough to persuade it to stay. It’s worth remembering what an amazing autumn it has been for Wanstead Flats, with this sighting following October’s yellow-browed warbler and September’s ortolan bunting, all rare birds in London.

Sulphur tuft

When I got home from work on the evening of 15 November there was a message from a neighbour who had found what she thought was a jack snipe dead on her back lawn that afternoon. I popped over to take a look at the unfortunate bird, and sure enough, it was a ‘half snipe’, with no obvious signs of injury other than a slightly bent tail. This cryptically coloured winter denizen of damp meadows and grazing marshes in the UK breeds on the tundra of far northern Europe. It migrates to us in the autumn because the tundra freezes hard, preventing it from probing the soil in its quest for invertebrate food. How poignant that it should cover all that distance to get here, only to perish, probably having struck a window, something it would be unlikely to encounter in arctic Sweden or Russia. At the time of going to press, November’s finds brought the total score to 1,482 (+66*), made up of 456 plants (+23*), 805 invertebrates (+20*), 130 birds (+5*), 60 fungi (+18*) and 31 miscellaneous (+0*). *Change from October's count.

With the Wren Wildlife Group’s year-long Wanstead 1,000 campaign drawing to an end, Tim Harris looks back over some of the species highlights spotted in our wonderful corner of the capital during 2016

W

e set out to find 1,000 different kinds of wild plants, bugs and animals – and we blew that figure out of the water. As I write, we’re tantalisingly close to 1,500. Whether we make it or not largely depends now on how good a late autumn we have for fungi, but even if we fall short there’s an appetite to do it all over again next year! Here are just a few of the highlights from a memorable year.

Common bulrush (Typha latifolia) OK, it’s hardly a rare plant, but there’s not very much of it in our area. This little patch by Shoulder of Mutton Pond in Wanstead Park was photographed on New Year’s Day. Later in the year it became important for our breeding reed warblers when they arrived in April. There are only two pairs, the only ‘reedies’ we have locally. The other great value of the bulrush is its water-cleansing properties. Every pond should have some!

Comma (Polygonia L-album) This butterfly had recently emerged from hibernation and was sunning itself in the Old Sewage Works in March. Commas sometimes emerge on mild days even earlier in the year. The caterpillars thrive on the leaves of nettles, currants and willows – and there’s plenty of all three in the Wanstead area. To advertise, please call 020 8819 6645 or visit wansteadvillagedirectory.com

December 2016 Bee orchid (Ophrys apifera) One local colony of this beauty would be something to celebrate, but this year we located three in May, as well as two other kinds of orchids. Once again, it was the Old Sewage Works that hit the jackpot.

Bird’s-foot (Ornithopus perpusillus) It’s not big and it’s not flashy but this was probably my favourite flower of the year. As far as I’m aware it grows on just one bank in the City of London Cemetery, and its flowers are so tiny they are easy to overlook, even if you are standing right next to them. Not to be confused with bird’s-foot trefoil, which is plentiful in our area – and also lovely.

Marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) This is our commonest hoverfly, certainly the one most likely to be seen in your garden. The first of the year were seen in January – it was very mild, after all – and it reached a peak in August. Hoverflies are very important pollinators so they should be encouraged.

Great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor) Every year we dream of seeing one of these handsome predators on Wanstead Flats. And every year we are disappointed. For three lucky birders, 2016 broke the mould. On 29 October Tony Brown, Bob Vaughan and Jono Lethbridge lucked-out big time. Although I only live five minutes from the Flats, by the time I’d rushed out to see it, the bird had disappeared, For more information on the Wren Wildlife never to be seen again. The missing myth Did you know it is a myth that you cannot report a missing person until they are gone for 24 hours? PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team explains why

A

nyone can be considered as a highrisk missing person depending on their circumstances and the reason that they could have gone missing, and there is no minimum time that you have to wait before making a phone call. The Metropolitan Police Service dealt with over 40,000 missing people last year, which is the highest amount in the country. Within the police service, a missing person is referred to as a ‘misper’. Fortunately, on average, 74% of missing people return or are located within 24 hours, 85% within 48 hours, with only 5% remaining missing for longer than a week and with 1% of people never being found. As I am sure you would expect, people don’t just go missing on a whim. There are various reasons depending on the individual’s circumstances, ranging from mental heath issues, such as depression, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and dementia, to drink and drug addiction, family, cultural and educational issues, suicidal thoughts and feelings, child exploitation and foul play, such as being on the run from the law. If someone you know goes missing and you have reported it to the police, it is important to provide an update every day. The police may need to search their bedroom and retrieve items that might help to locate them. Tell them about the person’s recent behaviour, attitude and new interests, and of any new social groups or changes in appearance. All this information may help with determining the reason why they have gone missing, but more importantly, where to start looking for them. If an elderly person keeps going missing due to dementia or Alzheimer’s, think about

pinning their name, medical information and contact numbers in their coat or handbag. Also, make a list of places they frequent, such as places they have been found at before, their old addresses and the old addresses of loved ones and places from their youth. A recent photo will also help police locate them as it can be circulated to all those patrolling in the area. The Alzheimer’s Society has produced a card designed to go in wallets and purses to assist with the swift return of a loved one. If you have concerns for a young person’s wellbeing and believe they have gone missing for cultural reasons, such as female genital mutilation or an arranged marriage, please don’t hesitate to call the authorities. Missing People is a fantastic charity that helps to locate people and find the underlying reason as to why they went missing. This charity also supports the families of missing people. A police contact point is located at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. 150 not out!

To mark the 150th anniversary of Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club, former player and umpire Mike Mead has published a book charting the club's history. In the seventh of a series of extracts, Mike explains the club’s approach to junior cricket

W

anstead was one of the first Essex clubs to establish a junior section, but it was from modest beginnings and much different from today’s progressive junior set-up of 350 boys and girls playing over 300 outdoor and indoor matches annually. The late Vic Joslin is affectionately known as the father of our Wanstead juniors and Les West, Peter Bainton, Neville Hinton and Tony Richardson are other club members who played important nurturing roles. It was the charismatic John Smith, a Yorkshireman and maths teacher, who was to bring Wanstead into the modern age and lay the foundations for what is often described as a role model for all recreational cricket clubs looking to establish junior sections. The death of John Smith at a relatively young age was a sad loss but he left the club a considerable legacy. The demographic landscape was changing in what had once been Winston Churchill’s constituency. Quick to see the implication of this and, in particular, the growing number of local Asian residents, John focused on two particular challenges: the need for an entirely inclusive club and the benefits of encouraging established players to support the coaching of the younger players. The contribution of two particular coaches, Graham Jelley and John Chambers, should not be underestimated. Trevor Hebden, who took over as head of Junior Cricket in early 2000, and his colleague Len Enoch, might be described

Wanstead’s under-15s were crowned national champions in 2010

as the Two Ronnies of Overton Drive. The successful Essex clubs at that time were highly focused on attracting the best players they could persuade to join them, with junior membership often subject to an admission test. The days of the club’s advantageous location served by captive residents and an excellent railway service from London, the largest port in the world, had come to an end. Greater player mobility through improved roads and a preparedness for many parents to choose a cricket club as the number two priority to a school had arrived. The 24/7 working environment was also eroding the traditional volunteer role in many sports clubs. Against this backdrop, a policy of fewer but higher quality players presented an attractive model. The alternative view – and thankfully the one that a far-sighted Management Committee endorsed – was to develop Wanstead as a community club. The thinking behind this approach was that it is not always possible to spot the best players from an early age, particularly as many drop out. A

December 2016 more community-based approach would provide better opportunities for members of all standards and provide a potentially bigger volunteer pool and financial resource. One story identifies some of the teething problems encountered. Tommy (whose name has been changed in an otherwise true account) was best described as a junior player of ‘modest ability’ but his level of enthusiasm and charm had enabled him to talk his way into an important junior cup semi-final. The thinking was that his dressing room chat would lift the team as a rising tide lifts all the boats in the harbour and surely he could do us little harm. This faulty analysis was soon exposed as he ran out three of our key batsmen. Then, given a cap to keep the sun out of his eyes after dropping two important catches, he used the cap to scoop up the last ball of the match when our opponents needed five runs to win. We realised from this experience that we should have a process of fast tracking highpotential players but always have a sufficiently wide fixture programme to enable Tommy to enjoy his favourite sport. The achievements speak for themselves: the club has won four under-15s national competitions – more than any other club in the country – achieved success at under13s national level and has won every major Essex tournament in every age group, most of them on many occasions. Wanstead has also developed many players to the first class game, the most recent being Kishen Velani. The valuable partnership with Essex is evident with many of our young members playing representative cricket and gaining academy selection. Other community initiatives have involved establishing important links with some 16 local schools and running the local borough boys and girls sides that enter and frequently reach the London Youth Games and finals at Lord’s. The high level of integration of junior with adult cricket has also been highly beneficial to the club’s overall success. Many juniors from the age of 12 upwards are introduced to

adult cricket through the six Saturday adult sides the club runs. During the last 15 or so years, some 75% of all our first team players have progressed from the juniors, an essential talent source for a club that does not pay its players. Described as a ‘community of families’, the club has prospered by providing the full range of recreational cricket, from grassroots up to the first class game. Our passion for the noble game has become infectious and we have been fortunate to attract many celebrity members and visitors, including Imran Khan, Michael Holding, Courtney Walsh, Billy Bowden, Aleem Dar (whose children we coached for a season), Alistair Cook and, of course, our very own James Foster. “Whether they’re playing prison inmates in Jamaica or sending coaches to Bangladesh, there is a real community feel about Wanstead Cricket Club,” wrote All Out Cricket in 2013.

Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club 1866–2016 by Mike Mead is available from the club, located on Overton Drive, Wanstead, E11 2LW (price: by donation). For more information, call 020 8989 5566 or visit wanstead.hitscricket.com

Evelyn + Logan's Appeal Haven House Children’s Hospice would like to ask you to consider donating to the Evelyn and Logan Appeal this Christmas. It could be the best gift you give all year, says Natalie Tomlinson

A

mother who lost her first baby to a rare neurological disorder and faces the prospect of losing her second child is raising awareness of her story as part of this year’s Christmas appeal for Woodford Green charity Haven House Children’s Hospice. Keeley Johnson wants the public to dig deep and make donations to Haven House during the festive period to support other life-limited children and their families in the local area. Her son, Logan, was born on 1 December 2015 with Leigh syndrome, a severe neurological disorder, which causes rapid muscle weakness that affects mobility, feeding and breathing. Keeley lost her first baby, Evelyn, to the same condition in 2014, when she was seven months old. Haven House cared for Evelyn during her short life, providing Keeley with time for precious memories. Keeley was still grieving the death of her first child when she found out she was four and a half months pregnant with Logan. It came as a shock. Keeley was terrified that Logan would also have Leigh syndrome, but he initially appeared healthy. Keeley thought she could now enjoy being a mum again. However, at five months Logan stopped drinking and feeding and began to cry lots. She was told he had reflux but Keeley knew in her heart he too had Leigh syndrome. Not long after, her worst fears were confirmed. Haven House is now supporting Keeley and Logan through another difficult journey. Logan has lost his smile, makes no sounds and is unable to sit up. Keeley said: “I lost my precious Evelyn at seven months old, so this Christmas is special to me as I am fully aware that it could be Logan’s last. It’s so comforting to know that Haven House

Logan

Evelyn

will be there for Logan when the time comes, just like they were for Evelyn.” Over the last few months, Logan has developed epilepsy and is having about 10 seizures a day. The majority of these are at night, which means Keeley is not getting much sleep. “Much of my time is spent alone with Logan. It is hard to get out as I don’t have a car and I have to take so much equipment with me. When we do go out, it’s mostly to the hospital to have endless tests or meetings with various consultants. The one trip we do look forward to every week, though, is to have music therapy at Haven House. Logan gets so excited; he reaches out and listens and I see expressions on his face that I have not seen before. I like to think he is trying his best to smile at his mummy. I know that when the time comes to say goodbye to Logan, Haven House will be there to support us for as long as we need it. You cannot overestimate how much that means to me.” For more information and to make a donation, call 020 8506 3634 or visit havenhouse.org.uk/christmasappeal
