Welcome...

I’m not a football supporter. My wife is not a football supporter. My four-year-old daughter – who can hoof a ball over a five-foot fence – is not a football supporter. Through a general lack of interest in the competitive game, I’m ashamed to say we all missed England’s opening match of the World Cup, which is apparently an important footballing event. But as the nation’s hopes were raised, and as Tunisia and Panama succumbed to the prowess of Kane and Co, so too did the three of us succumb to the excitement of the prospect that football could be coming home.

I don’t need to tell you how that story ends. But I do think it’s worth pointing out that, despite the edge-of-the-seat enjoyment that comes from supporting a winning team (Croatia and Belgium match excepted), I have no desire to watch any other games until 2022, or perhaps 2020. In the same way you can find yourself watching rhythmic gymnastics during the Olympics and never see another ribbon-assisted dance performance for four years, the World Cup offers those devoid of any passion for football the chance to take part in a celebration of the beautiful game. In short, some events are more than the event themselves.

That’s not a concept unique to international sporting competitions. It’s not even unique to sport, or to the international stage, for that matter. Wanstead has it’s own fair – perhaps even unfair – share of larger-than-life events: Music in Wanstead Park, Art Trail Wanstead, Wanstead Fringe and Wanstead Festival spring – as quickly as Jordan Pickford – to mind. And they each strike – as accurately as Kieran Trippier – the right chord with their community of fans. No need to chant for anything to come home to Wanstead… it’s already all here.

Residents are invited to trace the history of their house at an Aldersbrook Library event this month. “This session will show you what resources can be used to find out who previously lived in your house,” said Sue Page from the Redbridge Information and Heritage Service. The event – which takes place on 17 August from 11am (free; booking required) – will provide access to electoral registers, directories, the census and house plans.

Marks & Spencer has announced it will be opening the doors to its Wanstead store on 23 August at 10am. “My team and I are really excited about opening in Wanstead… Cutting the ribbon and welcoming customers in for the first time will be a great moment and I hope lots of local customers will pop down and join us,” said store manager Claire Benson.

The shop – which has had its opening delayed since October 2017 – will be located at 157 High Street and open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 7pm on Sunday.

Green light for a natural playground in Wanstead Park A design proposal for the Wanstead Park playground

The City of London’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee has given the green light to proceed with plans for a play area in Wanstead Park. “The play area will be made of natural materials and designed to complement the environment and heritage of the park and situated in an unobtrusive site. We are working with Redbridge Council and the City of London to develop the plans, and hope to consult the local community on designs later this year,” said Amy Unsworth of the Aldersbrook Playground Campaign.

Wanstead Flats suffers London’s biggest ever grass fire

Over 220 firefighters and 40 fire engines from stations across London attended a grass fire on Wanstead Flats last month. At the height of the blaze – which the London Fire Brigade (LFB) identified as the largest grass fire in its history – over 100 hectares of grass was alight.

“We are calling on the public to take steps to prevent grass fires: don’t drop cigarettes on dry ground or out of cars, don’t have barbecues on dry grass and don’t leave glass bottles out as they can concentrate the sun’s rays and start a fire,” said an LFB spokesperson.

Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson has begun building an archive of images depicting ‘hidden’ parts of London. “The rate we pull down buildings for redevelopment is always of concern to me… With this in mind I am always in search of ‘hidden’ London, those little alleyways, byways and courtyards that have remained unchanged over decades or even hundreds of years,” said Geoff, whose current ‘London after Dark’ exhibition at Gallery 84 on Nightingale Lane features the first photos in the series. A total of 100 military aircraft flew over London last month to mark the RAF’s centenary, with Wanstead residents able to view the aerial spectacle as they headed towards Buckingham Palace. Taking off from various bases around the country, the aircraft assembled in holding patterns off the coast of East Anglia before merging near Ipswich and flying down the A12 corridor to the capital.

A highlight of the display was a group of 22 Typhoon FGR4s, which formed the number 100 in the sky.

A long-awaited TfL improvement project at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout started last month. New safety measures at what is one of Redbridge’s busiest junctions will include signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings and the widening of footpaths.

During the upgrade, temporary changes will be in place, including diversions and lane closures impacting the A406 and A1400.

Bus routes will also be affected and some pedestrian crossings temporarily closed. The work will continue until November.

ore than three-quarters of people with a garden are now actively trying to help wildlife, according to a new survey from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). RHS chief horticulturist Guy Barter says we’re no longer a nation of gardeners, we’re a nation of wildlife gardeners.

And it’s a good thing too. Last year, research in Germany found that in just 25 years, the population of flying insects had plummeted by 80%. It’s a shocking figure, but really just tells us what we already know from the almost total absence of squashed bugs on our windscreens. What was once so abundant is now almost gone. Experts are calling it an ecological Armageddon.

The way land is being managed in the UK – with our approach to intensive farming and urban development – is killing huge swathes of insect life through pesticides, pollution and loss of vegetation and habitat.

Insects are an integral part of our ecosystem.

Around 80% of all wild plants are thought to need them for pollination and roughly 60% of birds use insects for food. A study by the RSPB into the dramatic decline in suburban sparrows found that starvation of chicks due to lack of invertebrate prey was the main cause of high levels of chick mortality.

Many people may not particularly like insects but they’re essential for human activities too – they keep our soil fertile, degrade waste, pollinate our orchards and control pests, such as aphids.

The good news is that with so many private gardens in Wanstead, we’re the ones in the driving seat and at least able to influence what happens to wildlife in our patch of London.

The RHS survey found that some 40% of people are now specifically planting wildlifefriendly plants in their garden. Researchers say there is huge potential to turn suburban areas into giant nature reserves if enough gardens take part. With insect life in the countryside decimated by intensive crop production, there are now more species of wild bee living in suburbia than in farmland!

The nation is getting behind our beleaguered pollinators – meadow-style planting was a big trend among garden designers at the Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows. So, how can you recreate a bit of Chelsea magic in your own plot?

Alice Bowe, gardening columnist for The Times, recommends creating a naturalistic style of meadow planting in flower beds using domesticated varieties of wildflowers. The key is to create an unstructured effect by jumbling up flower heights and having tall but transparent plants dotted throughout the mix, even at the front.

H

aving always looked forward to wandering around the High Street, admiring all the talented artists that take part in the annual Art Trail Wanstead, I thought this year I would attend the meetings and explore with others some alternative exhibiting ideas I have had for a while.

As a practising artist myself, I work mainly in sculpture and 3D art, and I am currently working with some old black and white photographic images taken on my trusty 35mm Nikon FM. I combine these images with reclaimed and unconventional objects of interest to create sculptural artworks.

My work has evolved over the years since leaving art college and I now feel more in control of expressing my creativity. In my early days, I exhibited in various solo and group exhibitions, and then art took a back seat to work and life commitments, with each passing year promising myself to resume my artistic pursuits.

This year I am organising a postcard art exhibition as part of the art trail. It simply involves creating a piece of art on a blank postcard, putting your details on the back and posting it to us. We will arrange to display the arty postcards at various venues around Wanstead during the trail for all to see and enjoy. It is easy, fun and free to take part and I am therefore hoping it will appeal to both artists and non-artists alike. It will hopefully present an opportunity to anyone who has never had work displayed before to see their creative work exhibited in public for the first time. How exciting is that?

of different interpretations on this year’s trail theme, the human condition.

I am calling on all you readers to enter a piece of artwork, whether or not you consider yourself arty, and to encourage all your friends and family to enter as well. Make a project of it, get your pastels and paints out, experiment with collage and mixed media, take photographs and write poetry and think creatively and outside the box. Encourage children to enter so they can have the fun of hunting for their own artwork as part of the trail.

The fun element of this kind of exhibition is that the work itself will be subject to the wear and tear of the post – this is part of the desired effect – and it may not even reach us (though hopefully it will). You simply create the work and then let go of it and see what condition it arrives in after its postal journey.

Wanstead resident and actress Charlotte Knowles – best known for her role as a waitress on Channel 4’s First Dates – hopes to bring oldfashioned romance to Wanstead this month with a speed dating event

I

moved to London nine years ago to pursue my acting dream! I attended the Guildford School of Acting and graduated in 2013. Since then, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked so consistently within the acting industry.

Last Christmas, after finishing playing Cinderella, I decided to email Channel 4’s First Dates, asking if they needed a new face. To my absolute surprise, they got in touch and it spiralled from there, with me eventually being selected to be part of the First Dates team. With nearly five million viewers, I knew I’d have to practise my waitressing skills! I remember calling my family and screaming down the phone. It was definitely a whirlwind experience and opened up amazing opportunities. Since then, I’ve done international commercials in Beirut, Zurich and a four-month play in Hamburg, which received five-star reviews. It’s most certainly been an incredible last two years with my career. Hopefully, my luck will continue.

My next dream job would be to work with the Mischief Theatre Company in The Play That Goes Wrong. Comedy is definitely a strength of mine and a passion.

First Dates has inspired me in more ways than one, and I’m delighted to be hosting a special event in Wanstead. It’s a speed dating evening to help local people meet new prospective partners. I’m a true romantic at heart and adore hosting and entertaining. To watch two people fall in love and have a spark is beautiful. So, it’s the icing on the cake to hold my own evening and hopefully watch some magic being made. It’s going to be a funinfused and bespoke evening with all the finer details met. I want people to come along and find the joy again in love and dating. I think

all this online dating has really ruined things for my generation. Everything is so disposable and fickle. Old-fashioned courting and the natural ways of meeting people have gone out of the window.

Hopefully, I can bring romance to Wanstead and put the joy back into dating. I hear so many of my friends talking so negatively about online dating and their inability to find ‘someone special’. It’s sad that we’ve lost the art of approaching someone in a bar or on the street. You’re seen as an alien if you make real ‘contact’. But I’m here to change all that.

The support I’ve received from local businesses and the community has been overwhelming and I can’t thank everyone enough. So, if you fancy a lovely and exciting evening out with the potential of finding your true soulmate, then come on down. Falling in love consists merely of uncorking the imagination and bottling the common sense.

No one ever fell in love without being a little bit brave.

a a crossroads In the second of a series of articles on the future of St Mary’s Church, Rev Dr Jack Dunn reports on a consultation the Parish of Wanstead launched at the end of June about the future of this iconic building

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Parish of Wanstead (which also includes nearby Christ Church) is now consulting church members on the future of St Mary’s as an ‘open’ Anglican church, on possible future uses for the building, on potential pastoral provision for worshippers at St Mary’s and on potential service provision there throughout the year. One of the many questions the consultation raises is: can the Parish of Wanstead now afford, in terms of human and capital resources and impact on our Christian mission, to operate two churches in such close proximity?

The consultation was launched on 30 June and runs until 22 September. A decision about the future of the Grade I listed church – including whether to begin the process to close the church for regular (more than six services per year) Anglican worship – may be taken by the PCC at a meeting scheduled for 25 September.

If the PCC does decide to trigger the closure, then this formal legal process would include a period of formal public consultation, including members of the wider community, over a much longer period. At the present time, the PCC is gathering information and views to help it discern if this process should be initiated.

A consultation paper has been drawn up by the Standing Committee of the parish, which sets out more fully the reasons why the parish is now considering this step, including managing the future costs of maintaining and improving all of the Parish of Wanstead’s

well-attended meeting took place at Wanstead Golf Club in early July to discuss the future of St Mary’s Church, Redbridge’s only Grade I listed building.

buildings, which include not just St Mary’s and Christ Church but also two neighbouring parish halls and which potentially exceed £1 million.

The report states ‘it is important to note that closure may not mean closing fully for some Anglican worship or spiritual deconsecration’ and outlines options which might include six Anglican church services per year in the building and the ongoing provision of baptisms, weddings and funerals, in addition to community outreach initiatives and open days, although at this stage there can be no guarantees as to worship.

The report also notes: ‘given the building’s Grade I listed status, it is highly unlikely that St Mary’s could be demolished or turned into residential accommodation’. It also explores many of the potential partnerships for the building that the PCC has already researched, including a local trust or a local education provider taking on the ownership of St Mary’s and building on its mission and outreach while maintaining some Anglican worship.

ance expresses the drive to create the perfect moment.

It is social and selfish, grasping and gregarious.

Dance describes and releases fantasy and fulfilment.

It expresses sensuality and sensitivity, intellect and intuition.

Dance flows from the cutting edge of creativity where risks are taken to achieve a vision. It reflects extremes of performance, discipline and dedication. Resulting from the need to push body and mind through established limits, from selfishness, generosity, guts and desire, it’s an expression of culture, pride, determination and can be very much more.

My name is Carole Edrich. I am a photographer, journalist and social entrepreneur who is fascinated by how human beings react to and anticipate risks and extremes. There are two sides to my work; the fluffy fun side (dance, travel, adventure and cultures) and the risk management side (systemic, organisational and business risks, race, health and youth). You might have met me in Wanstead, Leytonstone or South Woodford or read my Angels in Wanstead column in previous issues of this publication. This piece explains why I’ve stopped writing that series.

My earliest memories of dance as a child are the excuses I used to avoid Yvonne Dudley’s ballet lessons. Ironically, in my early thirties I sought her out for private lessons to bring more control and fluidity into my bodybuilding routine. At no time during those lessons did I ever imagine I’d become a ‘method’ dance journalist and learn enough of 65 different dance forms to feel able to

write about and photograph them, or that I’d become so frustrated with the way these wonderful creatives were treated that I would decide to do something to help them.

Four years ago I started working on a small social enterprise. It’s called Dance GRiST and is a training organisation that looks like an online magazine. Each issue covers just one subject with beautiful photographs, wonderful words, moving videos and surprising sounds. Conventional media doesn’t do what I believe that dancers need, so Dance GRiST covers dance in ways that do dance justice.

It’s just the beginning. I want to use Dance GRiST to help dancers directly. By training movement creatives (performers, social dancers, teachers and dance enthusiasts) how to create high quality content (images, videos, words or sounds), how to pitch their ideas and get paid for them, I can help them earn more. That’s important. In the UK, the average dancer’s annual salary is £5,000. That’s about a quarter of the living wage.

Dance GRiST marks my line in the sand.

With help from the Council of Europe, Redbridge Drama Centre and some of the dancers themselves, I’ve created the first app and soft-launched it, and the images I’ve selected for an exhibition currently on show in Leytonstone tell the stories of some of the people I am working to help. Life is hard for these people and it shouldn’t be. Many are based in Redbridge Drama Centre on Churchfields in South Woodford, others have been rehearsing in Leytonstone or other parts of London and a few are from further afield.

Wanstead on show In the second of a series of articles looking at the annual phenomenon that is the Wanstead Fringe, Giles Wilson talks about The Secret Garden, a theatre performance that will be topping the bill this year

And so we’re delighted that, in the Fringe’s sixth year, we are finally able to achieve that goal. Over two days and five performances, the much-loved novel The Secret Garden will be coming to Wanstead. It’s a musical adaptation and will be performed by a theatre company on a mission to take professional theatre to parts of the country where it doesn’t normally happen. For the Fringe, that means taking over the magnificent Deaton Theatre at Forest School in Snaresbrook.

Katherine Mount is the producer of the play and is leading its move to Wanstead. ”The Secret Garden is such a magical show. Dave Simpson wrote this adaptation 30 years ago and it was performed once in Bournemouth before we revived it last year with a stunning new musical score, and the reception it had was incredible. Young, old and in-between were mesmerised and moved by the piece.

I think a part of the draw is its classic status, meaning there are many generations of adults who loved this story as a kid and they want to relive it, either just for themselves or to share it with the next generation. It’s something that people of all ages can genuinely enjoy together. This particular version is very true to the book,” said Katherine.

The book tells the tale of Mary Lennox, a 10-year-old girl whose parents have died and who is sent to live with a wealthy, austere uncle. She discovers a walled garden in the grounds of her uncle’s manor and the story tells of how she brings the garden back into full bloom, and with it, her new family. It

was adapted by the BBC into a memorable children’s TV series in 1975 and is routinely named as one of many people’s favourite books.

Katherine adds: “September will be the third outing for this show and we are so pleased to be bringing it to Wanstead Fringe. The more we discovered about the Fringe, the more we realised that this venture fitted perfectly with our aims as a company. We are in the business of creating new artistic opportunity and experiences for communities right on their doorstep. There will never be anything quite like quality live theatre and the reaction we have had to date shows that people still very much want to enjoy this art form… The West End will always be there, but how much better if it comes to you every once in a while. We truly hope the people of Wanstead embrace this project and it becomes the first of many theatrical endeavours for the Wanstead Fringe.”

In the fourth of a series of articles looking at the issues surrounding divorce, local resident and divorce consultant Sonia Limbada explains how separating couples can minimise the impact on their children

W

hen couples decide to end their marriage through divorce, it can be one of the hardest things they go through. The worry of how it will affect their children can only make the situation worse.

Clients often ask me how they can minimise the negative impact of divorce on their children and my advice is they should divorce as amicably as possible. With an amicable divorce, the focus is on the entire family, not just the divorcing couple.

The advantage of an amicable divorce is there is little or no court involvement. You decide what works for you as parents and what’s in your children’s best interests.

Every family is unique, so you can come up with arrangements tailored to suit you; for example, where the children will live, when they will spend time with each parent and how much child maintenance needs to be paid.

If you agree the arrangements, there is nothing else you need do – you do not need court approval. I recommend you record what you’ve agreed in a parenting plan so you both know what to expect from each other.

A parenting plan is an agreement between you both about how you are going to care for your children during and after the divorce.

Some couples simply write down their agreed contact arrangements, whilst others have a very detailed plan, including details of the children’s dietary requirements and religious beliefs. That’s the point of a parenting plan; it gives you time to reflect on what is important for your children and how their needs can be best served.

A parenting plan is not legally binding, but it can hold some weight if you do end up in court. If you want to make your agreement legally binding, you can get a consent order from the court – this is still an amicable approach and you are simply asking the court to rubber stamp the agreement.

Aside from living arrangements, you will also want to come to an agreement on how you will support your children financially.

Again, parents are free to come to their own arrangements as to how much child maintenance should be paid. The government website Child Maintenance Service has a useful calculator where you can calculate the amount you could expect to pay or receive.

Amicably co-parenting children is no easy feat and it may not be achievable in some cases; however, with some hard work and empathy, it is possible for most. Just remember to keep the line of communication open and work with your children’s best interests in mind.

Pool/Parking/Projects Sheila Bain and Paul Merry were elected as councillors for the new Wanstead Park ward in May. Here, the two Labour representatives explain how their work is progressing

W

e are proud to have been reelected in May to serve as Labour councillors for Wanstead Park ward. We have been getting down to business, dealing with local issues of concern to our residents and working with colleagues to deliver our manifesto pledges, despite the continued savage assault on our funding by central government.

A new pool in Wanstead, alongside major improvement works to Wanstead High School, is one of our priorities and designs are now in the final stages of development for both the school and the pool. The project will create high-quality educational facilities for our young people and a great family leisure complex. It’s anticipated work will start on the site early next year, following consultation and subject to planning approval.

A main local issue for us has been monitoring the implementation of the Aldersbrook and Lakehouse Controlled Parking Zone (ALH CPZ), which came into force on 25 June.

Overall, implementation seems to have gone smoothly for most people. A number of residents have said how vastly improved the parking situation now is on their road, especially on the Lakehouse Estate and roads in Aldersbrook nearest to Aldersbrook Road and Wanstead Flats. Over the coming months, we will be ensuring that a highly visible and regular level of enforcement is maintained to keep commuter parking and vehicles from neighbouring boroughs off the streets of Aldersbrook and Lakehouse.

We know that many local residents are concerned about street cleaning, littering, fly-tipping and antisocial behaviour (ASB).

We are working to tackle this, and as of

the end of July, a new street cleaning and street-scene service was introduced, which is being delivered through four Neighbourhood Teams. Wanstead will be part of the West Neighbourhood Team. Each neighbourhood will have a manager supported by a dedicated team of street cleaning staff and enforcement officers and will be more locally focused. The team will employ a community engagement outreach officer, who will work with the community on improving the area, meeting local groups and engaging the community in creating a better, cleaner and reduced ASB local environment.

Redbridge Council is again funding the Wanstead Festival, which takes place this year on Christchurch Green on 16 September and is a great day out for all the family. We hope to see everyone there. And, of course, if you have any local issues or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

IGNITING INSPIRATION Our capital city has drawn artists from all over the world to portray its famous river. Join historian Jef Page this month to hear about those for whom the Thames has been a source of delight and artistic inspiration

F

or my talk on famous paintings of London this month, I will show a wide range of pictures from the 18th to the 20th centuries.

Giovanni Antonio Canal – better known as Canaletto (1697–1768) – was a star Venetian artist, but he travelled to London to seek even wider fame and fortune, and crucially arrived here with letters of introduction to the highest strata of society. His painting The Thames and City of London from Richmond House (1747) from the Duke’s house in Whitehall shows the river’s sweep with tiny brushstrokes – still and blue and glassy, ladies strolling along the river’s terrace, a Venetian galley having travelled all the way here and distant St Paul’s dominating the skyline.

More violent is JMW Turner’s (1775–1851) treatment of The Burning of the Houses of Parliament, 16 October 1834. The picture is a dazzling, swirling, frenzied riot of colour: yellows, reds and oranges as the fire burned out of control and Turner actually got into a boat to view the fire from different viewpoints.

Artists painted along the Thames and in Trafalgar Square with differing amounts of success. Claude Monet (1840–1926) arrived in London as a refugee from the FrancoPrussian War (1870–1871). The most famous of the Impressionists, he painted The Thames below Westminster (1871). His London is grey and murky, the river painted in short stabbing strokes. In the background, the newly built Houses of Parliament are lost in the mist of a foggy day, the figures on the wooden jetty are indistinct. As his success and sales grew and he got older, he returned to London from 1900 to 1903 to paint a series of pictures of the Houses of Parliament with the form of Big Ben disappearing into a soft haze of colour. the steps of the National Gallery, James Tissot (1836–1902) – he anglicised his name from the French Jacques Joseph Tissot – painted a more mysterious picture, London Visitors (1873). At least, it was to the critics who didn’t like it.

By contrast to the misty gloom of the capital, Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) portrayed the bright, dappled sunshine of Hyde Park (1890) as it flickers through the trees alongside Rotten Row lined with carriages. The foliage is all greens, oranges and yellows, while the shadows are in soft mauves and pink dabs.

In contrast to these grand scenes of buildings and famous parks, I will also show a quiet suburban scene: Harry Bush’s (1925–1994) oil on panel of The Tiled Kitchen (1954). His daughter, Janet, is seen washing up in her SW19 kitchen: the green and white tiled wall, lino on the floor, knobbly old fashioned 1930s-style taps, electric light and kettle and a pantry cupboard full of pots and pans – a reallife kitchen-sink drama.

I

was born in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, and from an early age took an interest in painting and drawing. After leaving school, I studied at Cardiff College of Art and graduated from Birmingham Polytechnic with a degree in fine art (painting). I stayed on in Birmingham after graduation and continued painting, drawing and exhibiting my work with the financial support of West Midlands Art. By the end of my twenties, I felt the urge to travel and spent most of the next 10 years overseas in the Far East, Asia and Latin America. During this time, my interest in visual language transferred from painting to photography. I returned to Britain in the midnineties and have lived in London since.

On my return to Britain, I very much wanted to resume my involvement in drawing and painting and decided to attend life drawing classes. I found the discipline of the life room suited my needs and has remained a constant in my work through to the present day.

Portraiture has been a recurring theme in my work. All my drawings are done from direct observation. Although none of the sitters are personal friends, I have drawn some of them again and again over many years; the life room still affords a definite sense of objectivity. The drawings are on a monumental scale and endeavour to utilise the shape and format of the paper, which the head occupies.

The materials used are water-based paints, charcoal and pastel and there are endless possibilities with these combined mediums. The fact these materials are fast drying suit the immediacy of response required by the time limitations dictated by the life room.

Although I don’t begin a portrait drawing with any fixed idea in mind, my work is informed by the work of the Old Masters in that I spend time copying from reproductions and from originals in public collections, a practice I find insightful and helpful in overcoming the problems involved in observational work.

Life drawing and portraiture are an important aspect of my work, and the discipline and critical nature of the activity feeds other aspects of my endeavours, drawing in themes of sequence and narrative.

Lies, damned lies & headlines In the first of two articles exploring the world of fake news, Wanstead resident Steve Wilks takes a look at why the truth does not always prevail and the problems misinformation can cause

F

ake news is a type of yellow journalism – using shocking headlines consisting of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media.

Fake news is written and published with the intent to mislead to gain financially or politically, often with sensationalist, exaggerated or patently false headlines that grab attention. Intentionally misleading and deceptive fake news is different from obvious satire or parody, which is intended to amuse rather than mislead its audience.

Fake news often employs eye-catching headlines or entirely fabricated news stories to increase readership, online sharing and internet click revenue. In the latter case, it is similar to sensational online ‘clickbait’ headlines and relies on advertising revenue generated from this activity, regardless of the veracity of the published stories.

A team of researchers from Indiana University, Shanghai Institute of Technology and Yahoo Research set out to determine why the truth does not always prevail online. They published their findings in the journal Nature Human Behaviour. Fake news and viral hoaxes spread online because of our short attention spans and the deluge of new information constantly pouring into social media, the study says. But reining in the bots that spit out huge numbers of posts could help curtail the information overload that makes it hard to sort fact from fiction, the authors add.

Fake news undermines serious media coverage and makes it difficult for journalists to cover significant news events. News becomes less trustworthy and people will tend to ignore it or look at it with a cynical

eye. Fake news tends to use more punchy headlines with short, bullet point pieces and no real depth of analysis. Contrast with traditional news content and style, which tends to be more discursive, indicating proper treatment of subtle and nuanced arguments, satisfying the reader the complex issues at hand are evaluated.

Fake news is also upsetting for the subject of the news item, having falsehoods and untruths spread about them. While there are defamatory laws to remedy this, the prohibitive cost and escalation of carrying them out can often make the situation worse.

Often, victims have to suffer in silence to limit the impact.

Fake news also brings into doubt the reputation of journalism. While all journalists will exhibit some mild agenda and opinion in their writing due to their own values and beliefs (it would not be entertaining if they did not), the mere fabrication of news items sullies the integrity of the profession.

A

s a travel agent, I am fortunate to enjoy lots of interesting travels, and was delighted last summer when invited to join a trip to Minnesota in Minneapolis, primarily as guests of the Mall of America to celebrate their 25th anniversary. We were also hosted by Radisson Blu, one of the hotels directly linked by a walkway into the mall, making it an attractive location regardless of weather, which can range from bitterly cold in winter to outrageously hot in summer.

Since opening its doors in 1992, Mall of America has revolutionised the shopping experience of tens of millions of visitors each year. A leader in retail, entertainment and attractions, it is one of the top tourist destinations in the country and is known around the world. With over 520 stores, from fashion and food to tech and toys, there’s something for everyone. With constant innovation, I look forward to my next visit and seeing how it changes. Aside from the retail experience, the mall strives to be environmentally friendly. For instance, it uses solar energy combined with heat generated from lighting, store fixtures and body heat to maintain a constant 70°F rather than a central heating system.

After meeting the senior director of international tourism, we enjoyed FlyOver America, a 3D ‘ride’ over America, where I felt like I was truly soaring through the sky.

We spent two days in the mall, shopping and eating, and enjoying the Nickelodeon Universe.

Not to be missed is a short drive out to Stillwater, the birthplace of Minnesota, and dinner aboard a steamcruiser. As the sun sets over this historic town and its

numerous buildings listed in the National Historic Register, it comes alive with bars and restaurants; they even boast The Velveteen Speakeasy.

The city of Minneapolis is underrated by us Brits. It is a beautiful city, actually a twin-city joined to St Paul’s across the river. The city highlights tour was indeed a highlight, as we were driven through historic neighbourhoods, past the Minnesota State Capitol and historic Fort Snelling. There were a few photo stops, such as at the stunning Minnehaha Falls and the Guthrie Theater.

One of the most recent attractions to the city’s sightseeing has arisen from tragedy: a visit to Paisley Park and the home of the late musician Prince. I experienced first-hand what it was like for Prince to create, produce and perform inside his private sanctuary. If space allowed, I would tell you more about the Prohibition Bar in the W Hotel, the Dakota Jazz Club and more, so please do call for more insights.

I

recently spent the day on the Suffolk coast. Being new to photography, it was a challenge to capture the expanse of the beach, sea and sky in a photograph. Depicting a sense of space while still highlighting the minutiae of the pebbles and plant life, which form the features of the beach, is something I need to practise.

How does this relate to doors? Doors fill the space between the inside and the outside. Depending on which side of the door you are on, one usually has expectations of what might be on the other side. Walking inwards through a door, one would be imaginative to expect to see a vast horizon on the other side of the threshold. Doors provide an anticipation of the space beyond them.

This is illustrated by the awe on the faces of those who see the inside of the Doctor Who Tardis for the first time. Or in the wonderment of the children as they walk into a wardrobe and find themselves in the frozen wasteland of Narnia.

Coming upon and walking through any door offers an opportunity to consider for a moment how much we place trust in the familiar expectation of what might be on the other side. How open could we be to encountering something unexpected?

To experience something new with awe and wonderment, not fear or anxiety?

Expectations of what might be beyond this green door have probably changed over the years.

It suggests a story of those living in Wanstead in the 1930s and perhaps even their mode of transport.

Negligence by non-communication Local solicitors Wiseman Lee recently won a High Court victory for a young family with important implications for all patients needing treatment where communication is paramount. Julie Aldred reports

octors and other medical staff need to be certain they are being given an accurate medical history and that their advice and discussions of risks, benefits and options are fully understood by the patient or family. Clear language and communication are key.

Poor understanding, whether arising from a language barrier, learning difficulties, mental incapacity or an ageing population and agerelated dementia, can have a catastrophic outcome.

In this latest case, a civil war refugee mother aged 21, who was settled with her husband in the UK, was discharged by the midwife after a difficult caesarean section birth with her baby constantly crying. The mother did not know if there was anything wrong. She tried to breastfeed him to settle him. The baby was not fed for more than 15 hours and the mother was exhausted. When the community midwife visited the family at home, he was found to have suffered catastrophic brain injuries.

Now aged eight, the child has cerebral palsy and severely impaired physical and cognitive functions.

During her pregnancy, the mother had attended hospital for regular check-ups. Her antenatal records had flagged up the need for an interpreter. When accompanied by her husband, he would interpret for her and on some visits, friends would help with the mother’s limited English.

It was the importance of the midwives checking that feeding was established and explaining what to do if there was a problem that was at the heart of the case. The mother knew something was wrong but couldn’t communicate when she was on her own

and was ignored. Lack of food leads to lack of glucose and eventually brain damage.

The mother was trying to feed her baby but had no idea whether he was taking milk. If given the correct advice, the parents would have taken him back to hospital after he was discharged too soon and without advice in a language they could understand, which was readily available had the hospital followed its own guidelines.

The trial judge found that the Barking Havering & Redbridge NHS Foundation Trust was negligent. The resulting injuries leaving the child severely disabled have placed tremendous pressure on the family.

The NHS Trust has expressed its sincere sympathies and said it will consider the court’s ruling carefully. The Trust has said it has made huge improvements since 2009 – the year the child was born – and will see if any more lessons on postnatal care can be learned.

Means, Motive and Opportunity A writing workshop on how to commit the perfect fictional crime, run by screenwriter and crime novelist Isabelle Grey.

This three-hour workshop will show you how to get started by using brainstorming and mind-maps to explore themes and ideas, and then use short writing exercises to discover how to use story structure to build a page-turning plot full of hooks and suspense; how to create both an atmospheric setting and memorable characters; and how to arrive at a satisfying ending. We’ll also take a look at police procedure and forensic research, and talk about editing and how to get published. There will be a time for a Q&A.
