PRICE REDUCED… Never have we seen so many properties on Rightmove with the label ‘Reduced’ on them. Wanstead sellers have enjoyed huge capital appreciation in recent years with Wanstead and Leytonstone becoming two of the best locations for rises in house values within the whole of the UK! So why now are we seeing properties being listed for eight weeks plus and why are so many having to reduce their prices?

Michael Molloy Business Owner

it, ‘price to sell’, not just price to list as that serves no purpose. And secondly, if sellers still wish to achieve top price then they may have to spruce up the property.

For the past six months, the market has somewhat flattened, not drastically or dangerously, but has simply had somewhat of a reality check, which i think we all expected. over the past two years i remember doing sales open days on even five-bed houses with 30-plus viewers, my record was a two-bed flat with 52 buyers on one Saturday. Whilst i was selling a stunning family home in Oakhall road, Wanstead, just by the station, i had 32 viewers and only one of them was from Wanstead – it was the out-of-area buyers coming to Wanstead, relocating from more expensive places like clapham, camden and islington etc that were happy to pay above and beyond the asking price, as Wanstead represented more for their money.

An agent taking pictures, putting it in the office window and listing on rightmove and hoping for the phone to ring might not be enough. in this type of market sellers need an agent with ‘reach’. By that, i mean an agent like martin & co. We have 40-plus in london alone and 200-plus offices in the Uk. Bearing in mind what i said earlier about most buyers coming from outside the area, surely it makes sense to list with an agent that can actually reach buyers from Wimbledon, Balham and Finchley? When i list a sales property, i approach the business owners of the individual branches, and they proactively approach their landlords and buyers with my Wanstead listings.

Back then, very average properties were getting away with listing at any price and the frenzy of an open day would get them a sale. now, the buyers have slowed down, taken a step back and are reviewing the market with an element of uncertainty, and as such, sellers now have to price realistically, or as we call

You are reaching people that originally may not have sat down at their computer and looked on rightmove and typed in Wanstead, but once it comes across their screen from their local trusted islington estate agent, they see the value in the area and the price per sq ft and all that Wanstead offers.

The paradigm for the perfect pop group, according to music journalist Paul Lester, is still The Beatles: “You need the streetwise intellectual one (John), the softer, more reflective one (Paul), the quiet, experimental one (George) and the goofy, down-to-earth one (Ringo).” If there’s a formula for the ideal band, is there one for the ideal high street? The perfect mix of shops is what’s needed: the serious ones (banks and estate agents), the functional ones (butchers and bakers), the creative ones (florists and jewellers) and the relaxing ones (coffee shops and pubs). But how many of each? In the media world, finding a recipe for perfection has been the holy grail for many writers and creators. From sitcoms to adverts and news headlines, applying a proven formula can ensure you create an Only Fools and Horses and not a Big Top, produce a Diet Coke break and leave Barry Scott on the cutting room floor, or write a catchy “I’ve been Edam fool” (The Sun, 10 January 2012; referring to Antony Worrall Thompson’s cheese theft) and avoid an “Enemies of the people” (Daily Mail, 4 November 2016; referring to the judges who ruled the government required parliamentary consent to give notice of Brexit). Sitcom formulas are well documented. Take the right character – who usually needs a basic personality flaw – a catchphrase, some conflict with people who make them cross and a catastrophe or two to overcome, and you have a recipe for hilarity. If only high street formulas were as easy to calculate, let alone control. It may be hard to replicate Del Boy and Rodney, but it’s harder still to script the future of Wanstead’s 100-plus High Street businesses and their individual plans within the community. So without a script, our High Street must ad-lib its way to good fortune, and as the supporting cast, we all need to give our best performance. Then, perhaps this time next year, we’ll be millionaires. Lee Marquis, Editor

Local forum meetings

Park’s live music events cancelled

Redbridge Council has announced the dates for this autumn’s local forum discussions, which includes a meeting in Wanstead. Loxford Youth Centre will host the next event on 11 September (6.30pm to 8.30pm), followed by a meeting at Wanstead House on 24 October (6.30pm to 8.30pm). The forums provide opportunities for residents to raise questions and concerns with Redbridge Council services. Visit wavidi.co/forum

Two live music events planned for August and September in Wanstead Park have been cancelled. “We have decided that three mini concerts in the park [in May, June and July] was enough. All were successful, but a lot of the organisers will be away in August,” said a spokesperson. July’s event saw hundreds fill the grounds of the park’s Temple to enjoy performances by local musicians, while June’s event raised funds for Grenfell Tower victims.

Commuter eyesore is now a mini meadow of mixed flowers

After

A formerly neglected patch of land adjacent to the steps of the Snaresbrook Station pedestrian bridge has been turned into a mini meadow of mixed flowers. “For too long it had been a morning and evening eyesore for commuters,” said Marian Temple of the Wanstead Community Gardeners. “With the help of Goodgym Redbridge, we got rid of the dead grass and rubbish and scattered seeds.” Cornflowers, linaria and poppies are among the species now on show, which should drop seeds for a further flowering in late summer.

Volunteers sought by Wanstead’s new bakery to deliver bread to charities

Gail’s Artisan Bakery – which is due to open it’s new Wanstead branch this month – has launched an appeal for volunteers to help deliver leftover food to local charities. “Believing that baking plays a key role in every community, we will be putting our surplus bakes, which are freshly made on site, to good use, partnering with local charities to feed hungry families and neighbours,” said a spokesperson for the bakery, which will be taking over the former Barclays site at 55–57 High Street. Visit gailsbread.co.uk

The #WeWantSay campaign group – which helped force Redbridge Council to carry out a full consultation over changes to local parking regulations – has launched a new online forum. “There were serious shortcomings in the consultation process that took place earlier in the year and these need to be widely discussed,” said forum administrator Bob Crabtree. The Redbridge Parking Forum also includes a poll asking if residents and businesses received the correct parking consultation documents. Visit wavidi.co/rpf

A bright and energy-efficient future for Redbridge

Santander’s name to disappear from the High Street in November

Work has begun on a borough-wide £4.4m programme to replace Redbridge’s street lights with energy-efficient Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). “This will not only make our borough brighter but will also make our streets feel safer and save us money on reduced energy costs,” said Councillor John Howard. All residential street lights will be replaced with LED lighting over the next two years, and residents will be informed before their roads are upgraded. Redbridge Council maintains approximately 21,000 street lamps.

As a result of a recent review, Santander has announced it will be closing its Wanstead branch in November. “This decision has not been taken lightly and follows a strategic review looking across our UK branch network,” said a spokesperson. “Closing our lesser-used branches means we’re able to reinvest in our branch network to improve facilities… The nearest alternative Santander branch is a short distance away on High Road, Leytonstone.” The closure will leave Nationwide and NatWest as the only two banks on the High Street.

We’ve got to go back: rugby club to host second open-air cinema event

School’s out: Wanstead pub rewards local teachers with free BBQ

Eton Manor RFC will be hosting its second annual weekend of open-air cinema screenings this month, with the option for families to camp out overnight. The films on offer this year are Back to the Future (26 August) and Dirty Dancing (27 August), with children’s activities, live entertainment, a BBQ and licensed bar available each day. Doors open at 2pm for those camping and 5pm for others, with the films starting at sunset each night (adults: from £7; children: from £3). Visit wavidi.co/emrfcshop

To mark the end of the school term, The Duke Wanstead hosted a free BBQ for teachers in its Italian Riviera-themed garden last month. “Public sector workers have been all over the news of late, and teachers are, in our opinion, often overlooked in the role they play in helping educate and develop our children. We are always looking for ways in which we can support our local community, and we were thrilled to host the first of many School’s Out! parties for our local teachers,” said landlord Ronnie Finch.

The Wanstead Community Gardeners are preparing a second water tank street planter to join the one already in place at Wanstead Station. “Our aim is to plant them with herbs. When mature enough, commuters will be able to pick a handful on their way home,” said Marian Temple. “Our thanks to Goodgym Redbridge, who collected the tanks, sawed off the pipes, drilled the holes, filled them with hard core and compost and all the other processes needed to turn an old water tank into a street planter.” Visit wavidi.co/wcg

Local charity needs help researching war records of its fallen soldiers

Redbridge to South Woodford: join a walk along the River Roding A view of the River Roding, between Redbridge Roundabout and Charlie Brown’s Roundabout

Jack Sanders at the grave of a former JLGB member in Ypres

The Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade (JLGB) are looking for volunteers to research the stories of soldiers who lost their lives in WWI. The South Woodford-based charity is working in partnership with We Were There Too, a lotteryfunded project that aims to preserve the impact and contribution of London’s Jewish communities during the First World War era. There were 535 JLGB members who served in the First World War and made the ultimate sacrifice. Research can be done from the JLGB office or from home. Visit wavidi.co/jlgb1

Residents are invited to join a walk along the local stretch of the River Roding this summer. Organised by Thames21 – a charity that works with communities to improve waterways – the riverside stroll will start at Redbridge Tube station on 12 August (10am; free) and follow the river towards Charlie Brown’s Roundabout, ending at South Woodford station by 12.30pm. Rising at Molehill Green near Dunmow in Essex, 107m above sea level, the Roding flows for 80km before joining the Thames at Barking Creek. Call 020 7248 7171

Bring a torch: night-time bat walk through Wanstead Park

Wanstead WI donate ‘twiddlemuffs’ to Goodmayes Hospital

Common noctule

The Wren Wildlife Group are inviting residents on a bat walk through Wanstead Park this month. “Wanstead Park supports quite a large population of bats, and we’ll be looking for soprano and common pipistrelles, Daubenton’s and noctule bats around the lakes,” said Tim Harris, who will be leading the event. A detector that converts bat echolocation ‘shouts’ into audible sounds will be used to identify the different species. The 90-minute walk will begin at the park’s tea hut at 9pm on 11 August. Visit wrengroup.org.uk

Members of the Wanstead Women’s Institute have created a number of ‘twiddlemuffs’ – blankets with sensory items attached that provide a source of visual or tactile stimulation – for local hospital patients. “They can be a source of comfort and activity for individuals with dementia who might otherwise feel agitated during a hospital stay,” said a spokesperson for Goodmayes Hospital, which received the donations last month. Each of the twiddlemuffs provided will be kept by an individual patient. Visit wavidi.co/wwi

annual Open Day Saturday 23 September 2017 8.30am – 1.30pm

Forest School’s Diamond Structure: the best of both worlds

The ratio of Oxbridge applications to offers made is over 41% – exactly twice the national average.

Forest has been a diamond structure school for over 40 years and the model has evolved over time, and continues to do so. The diamond structure combines both single-sex and co-educational teaching as pupils move up the school. Boys and girls are taught together until the age of seven, separately from seven to 16, before coming back together again in a joint sixth form, although boys and girls combine outside the classroom for academic trips, visits and in some co-curricular activities such as choirs, orchestras, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

www.forest.org.uk info@forest.org.uk 020 8520 1744

Forest’s diamond structure, the only one in London, therefore combines some of the best aspects of single sex and co-educational teaching, creating an environment for our 1,350 boys and girls to make the most of themselves and their time at the school.

In 2016, Forest pupils achieved excellent A-level results with 79% awarded A*, A or B, and 52% at A* or A. 37% of were awarded three or more A* or A grades.

here aren’t many high streets in London that come with their own bit of historic woodland. I guess Wanstead is just lucky. But what amazed me, speaking to people at the Tarzy Woodfest on 16 July, was how few knew the wood was there or, less surprisingly, that it’s called Tarzy (its name comes from the tar-covered fence that was erected – and torn down by outraged locals – in the 1800s in a vain attempt to build on the land). Many said they didn’t use the wood because it was too dark and uninviting, but the festival changed their opinions. People were really impressed with the event – the brainchild of Epping Forest Keeper Alison Tapply – and the work done to make the wood feel safe and open.

Other than the obvious highlights of the bands, bar and BBQ from The Duke, my personal favourite was the Tarzy tree trail, developed by Iain Ambler from the Epping Wildflower Group, which was a great hit. More than 40 families and individuals found and correctly identified the 20 different species of trees we are very lucky to have in such a small wood. My family moved to Wanstead in 2006 and I instantly loved the wood at the end of our garden; Tarzy was a place to enjoy nature and tranquillity. But over the last 11 years, reality has fallen short of this idyll. Littering, broken glass and signs of drug use were reasons I felt the wood unsuitable for my young kids. But what can one person do?

Last month’s Tarzy Woodfest introduced many residents to an often overlooked woodland off Wanstead High Street. Steve Steele, coordinator of the Tidy Tarzy group, invites you to help maintain this important community asset I spent the best part of two years collecting rubbish in Tarzy Wood most weeks, but other than a couple of volunteer working parties, I saw few signs of active woodland management or regular litter collections. So in 2016, I contacted the Corporation of London, and Alison Tapply agreed to draw up a management plan to increase biodiversity and encourage use. Having a strong local volunteer group was part of the plan and that was where I came in. Myself and Mark Lonergan, a fellow Tarzy Wood neighbour, were trained to run Tidy Tarzy events and several volunteer working sessions have been held since January to rehabilitate the wood. Now it’s great to see the wood opened up for nature and more visitors, with the Corporation of London and Redbridge Council giving it some TLC (Tarzy Loving Care).

I help coordinate a small group of passionate, committed volunteers, who regularly get involved and contribute to improving the site. You would be most welcome to join us. Our upcoming activities will include: zz Taking turns to regularly collect the litter that the more ignorant and selfish parts of our community leave behind. zz In the autumn, we will remove undergrowth along the High Street from Church Path to New Wanstead to reveal the avenue of lime and oak trees and make the cut-through path feel more open and safe. zz And hopefully, Tarzy Woodfest will be repeated next summer. Watch this space…

A new chapter If you’ve not been to Wanstead Library since its recent refurbishment, then you’re in for a pleasant surprise, says Library and Heritage Services manager at Redbridge Libraries Anita Luby

T

he new look Wanstead Library is a bright, airy, contemporary and welcoming space that feels so much bigger than its previous incarnation. Long gone is the water-damaged buckled floor, covered in an unattractive beige carpet so full of damp that the smell of mouldy socks pervaded the whole building. Gone too are the mismatched chairs and tables and rows of uniform wooden shelves that were difficult to navigate because they were so tightly rammed full of books. The floor has been replaced with a lovely beech wooden floor that complements the stunning ceiling above (for the record, the ceiling has always been there; you probably never noticed it before because it was being oppressed by all the surrounding beige!). Curvaceous bookcases in an attractive grey and ‘pigeon’ colour combination have now replaced the old bookcases that hadn’t moved for over 30 years. These flexible shelves are on wheels, which makes it easier for staff to move them around to create larger or smaller spaces within the library. Vision RCL, who manage the library service on behalf of the council, brought in Opening the Book, the leading UK supplier of library furniture. They are experts in creating spaces that accommodate the needs of every type of library user, and at Wanstead Library this is only too evident, where the challenges of an open-plan library have been overcome. The children’s library is now much bigger in order to accommodate the area’s growing number of young families. It boasts a stunning new ‘Big Book’ installation, featuring a quote that will thrill Harry Potter fans of all ages. The brightly coloured bookcases, which encourage play as well as reading, are back, as

is the ever-popular reading hideaway. There are zones for children to study as well as a dedicated area for young people, who will love meeting their friends and studying on the ‘byte’ tables. The new and improved children’s library is a truly inspirational space, which will help foster a love of reading in Wanstead’s youngsters for many years to come. The adult sections of the library are really well served too. There are nine public computers, free Wi-Fi, reading nooks and study areas. There’s even a dedicated chess table! Due to the new layout, a storytime session can take place in the children’s library at the same time as someone working on a PC in the adult library, without the noise being a distraction. Although the library has not been reopened long, the community has been flocking back, and they have been overwhelmingly positive about the improvements. Although the library had to close for three months (which felt like an eternity for many), I hope you will agree it was worth the wait in the end. Wanstead Library is located on Spratt Hall Road. Read to Succeed In the first of two articles, Steve Wilks, a director trustee at Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure, examines the importance of libraries and how Vision RCL is responding to their changing role in society

W

e have a shiny new library in Wanstead following July’s reopening and it is important not to underestimate the importance of the library service. Gone are the days of libraries just being a graveyard for fusty books and librarians in horn-rimmed glasses motioning “shhh” with their finger. Local authorities have a statutory duty to provide a library service. Under the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act, they have to provide a “comprehensive and efficient” library service, set in the context of local need; that is, specifically for those who live, work and study in the local area. Libraries are a great social leveller, meaning that people of modest means can achieve self-improvement and lead fuller lives, making more of what they have and discovering new worlds. Millions of people use public libraries. The 3,000 libraries in England were visited 225 million times in 2014–2015, more in total than visits to Premier League football matches, the cinema and the top 10 UK tourist attractions combined. Visits to libraries in Redbridge have held up very well, up 1.2% compared to 2015–2016, which is the envy of many other providers in London and further afield. Wanstead Library is one of the busiest town centre libraries, after Redbridge Central Library in Ilford. Such support is evidence that libraries are now adapting to the changes in information consumption in the data age to meet local need. The Redbridge library service supports 63 reading groups (the most in London) and organises a range of high-profile literature festivals and author events. We heavily promote books and reading as an essential life skill and a key enabler for social mobility. We work to improve reading levels and encourage broader reading habits, as well as

Lab Central at Redbridge Central Library

supporting those with lower literacy levels and reluctant readers. A number of exciting spaces have recently opened within Redbridge Central Library, which demonstrate the innovative and forward-thinking approach that Vision RCL and Redbridge Council are taking in the delivery of library services, supporting heritage, technology, innovation and enterprise. The first of these spaces has been created as a result of a successful bid to the Arts Council England’s Libraries Opportunities for Everyone Innovation Fund. Lab Central is an exciting new space created on the ground floor of the library. It is a space for residents to explore, learn and create. The programme of activities that will take place here will allow residents to experiment with a range of new technologies, such as 3D printing, Raspberry Pi’s, robotics, coding and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities. Since opening in June, Lab Central has quickly established the library as a centre of excellence and digital innovation, which will inspire future generations to create and innovate for many years to come. A weekly highlight

Ruth Adams recently visited the Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind, a Thursday afternoon club for those with poor sight. In the second of a series of articles, Ruth talks to member Flo Bassington

I

met Flo Bassington, age 95, at a rather special club in Woodford Green. Flo was attending her usual Thursday afternoon session at the Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind. Flo has been coming to this social club for 10 or 11 years now and, as a lady with very little sight, I asked her what she gained from coming. “Well, I can get here as a voluntary driver brings me,” she explained. “And I would say everything is wonderful. I enjoy the entertainment especially. I look forward to coming here every week. When I was 73, I was told I had age-related macular degeneration. That was over 20 years ago. I’ve lived in my house in Woodford Green for 62 years, so I know where everything is. Before I retired, I was a nurse at both Wanstead and Jubilee hospitals, but they are both blocks of flats now… Out and about, I generally find people very kind; local Sainsbury’s staff were, when I used to shop on my own, particularly helpful. The most supportive thing in my life is genuinely this club. It’s not as well known as it should be,” added Flo. The chair of the club, Carole McNeil, told me that her bank of 30 volunteers are extremely helpful. I spoke to one of them, Kate Green, who organises the musical entertainment. “I often use one of two organisations to help me find professional-level entertainers. One is called Music in Hospitals and is subsidised, and the other is called Variety Collective. In addition, we have excellent local school choirs coming in… Woodford Green Preparatory School and Avon House have been, and we hope to have Joseph Clarke School children here; it’s a school for the visually impaired. We also have a carol concert and occasional speakers. Sing-a-longs go down very well.”

Unusually, on the afternoon I visited, clothes were available to buy from a company that had been called in. Volunteers described the items and helped members who wished to try on and purchase in the comfortable, unhurried atmosphere. Members pay 20p for tea or coffee and delicious cakes baked by volunteers. The club also offers outings, usually involving a coach from the Sir James Hawkey Hall, and members have recently been to Hythe Hall in Chelmsford. Carole, the organiser of the club who began her volunteering as a driver, wants readers to know that the club is actively looking for new members, as well as new volunteers to support them. Do you know anyone with a visual impairment who would like to meet others and have a good afternoon out? The Wanstead and Woodford Association for the Blind meet in the United Free Church in Woodford Green on Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm. For more information or to volunteer, call 07840 850 838

W

hat started last year as a casual request on Facebook for photos of cows roaming the local streets has now turned in to a full-blown bovine art project. From the hundreds of anecdotes I received (sadly, very few photos), I began to build up scenarios in my head of peoples’ encounters with cows in the urban environment, and started putting some of these ideas into paintings. These include cows causing traffic jams, cows invading a cricket pitch, cows raiding a florist’s shop, cows munching gardens and several more, and more still stuck in my head, waiting for artistic release. It’s been a bit of a diversion from my usual artwork – which is good because it keeps me on my toes and stimulates the creative juices. Artistically, I’m not quite sure where the style came from, it’s so different from how I normally paint. I think in retrospect I was inspired on a subconscious level by Norman Thelwell’s drawings of little fat ponies, which I loved to look at when I was a girl and mad about horses. Cows aside, the main meat and potatoes of my art is architecture: houses, historical buildings and gravestones (yes, gravestones). These are painted in watercolour, which is the perfect medium for conveying the subtle colours of brick and stone. Locally, I have painted several house portraits, including renditions of the sadly demolished Wanstead House, and have worked on inscribing the names into the roof restoration memorial at Christ Church. I also love trees and am drawn to the skeletal qualities of their stark outlines in winter. I paint them in watercolour onto paper, the background of which is left pristine to accentuate the shapes of the trunk and branches. Wanstead’s chestnut trees are next on my to-do list! I’m exhibiting my cow paintings at Café Chicchi during the art trail. I’m hoping to organise a visitors’ book, and encourage people to record their own anecdotes of meetings with cows over a cup of coffee.

_Parking:_discuss_ Redbridge Council is stonewalling complaints about its consultation on paid-for parking in Wanstead, says the #WeWantSay action group, whose response is a new online forum for residents and businesses

Incompetence played its part, but also – after the council’s U-turn – consultation packs were only sent to residents in roads remaining in the area of proposed restrictions. Residents of Overton Drive – and north of Overton Drive, running from Blake Hall Road to St Mary’s Avenue – received only a single sheet. Even if they wanted parking restrictions on their roads, as some did, they were unable to say so. The only additional consultation documents available were for shoppers, held for a few weeks at Wanstead Library. These lacked 14 questions from the residents’ and business consultation documents. If such residents filled in the questionnaire online (and told the truth about being residents), the same questions were missing. We fear the council will claim apathy as to why many didn’t fill out questionnaires, rather than accept that lots were missed. Some will also have been unable to fill out forms online while others knew nothing about the process. A number of residents and businesses now believe the handling of the consultation should go to the ombudsman. According to Donna Mizzi, who started last year’s 3,500-strong petition calling for the consultation, this is just one area where the

R

edbridge Council claims there are parking issues borough-wide, so our new Redbridge Parking Forum initially has sections for Hainault, Seven Kings and Woodford Bridge, plus Wanstead. In the Wanstead section, complaints about not receiving consultation packs can be logged. We are sure whole streets were missed. Many in Cambridge Park were overlooked, including Wanstead’s biggest (and possibly most worried) private employer, Treehouse Nursery School.

process was seriously flawed: “This survey was not carried out properly on any level. Questions were skewed in favour of parking controls without offering a ‘no-change’ choice, although council leader Jas Athwal had said all options would be given. And parking action groups were fooled into attending what they believed were consultations about the whole process when, in fact, residents’ consultation packs started to hit doormats that morning.” Donna says those who opposed the Wanstead proposals, which were planned for introduction as an experimental scheme in February, have been vindicated by the ‘Woodford Bridge experience’, where free on-street, half-hour parking is only available by calling the RingGo parking service. In Woodford Bridge, shopkeepers and residents signed a 1,500-strong petition and said their six-month experimental scheme had already been running for nine months, with devastating consequences. Businesses report a 60% fall in business. Representatives addressed the council in June, saying four shops had shut and many more were planning to close if the restrictions were not changed. 20/20 Wanstead vision This year, the Wanstead Society celebrates its 20th anniversary. In the eighth of a series of articles, Chairman Scott Wilding wants us all to enjoy Wanstead’s green spaces and to help keep them tidy

I

Take litter home with you It seems simple and it is. If you live locally and can, just take it home. Stuffing more and more into an overflowing bin doesn’t make any sense. We all live in the same place and we all want it to be clean and that means just taking a bit more responsibility. Litter doesn’t just appear, it takes a human for that to happen – so let’s think before we act. Less packaging from our shops Over recent years, high streets have woken up to the price of packaging. By charging just 5p for a plastic bag, consumption has fallen by 80%. What an amazing achievement in just 18 months! But there is still way too much plastic and packaging in everything we buy. It takes thousands of years in some cases for it to degrade and usually just ends up as landfill. We lobby the government to try and reduce unnecessary packaging, but we can also change our shopping habits. Buying fruit and veg from the greengrocer or loose in the supermarkets means less packaging and less packaging means less litter. Bigger – and more – bins Back in 2012, the Wanstead Society donated over £1,000 to Redbridge Council for new bins with lids on Christchurch Green. This year, the council has removed dog waste bins and is yet to offer an alternative. Removing a facility and not offering a better alternative is a shortsighted, cost-saving measure that means more rubbish in our green spaces, which leads to

t’s summer. It should be sunny. So what better time to get out and enjoy one of our greatest assets: our parks? But summer also brings out the litterbugs, and we are all too used to seeing overflowing bins and litter strewn across our green spaces. So what can we do?

more rats and foxes. We all have a part to play, but it’s time to get more bins in green spaces to help restrict vermin and also ensure there are the people in place to empty them. Become a Womble Once every two months, the Wanstead Society and local residents team up to do a litter pick, starting on George Green. We usually get around 20 people, who give about an hour of their time to scour the locality and collect as much rubbish as possible. It makes a huge difference to the area and to wildlife and means we can make a positive difference. Sadly, there is always more to collect when we return. If the sun does show up, enjoy the weather, the parks and the picnics – but have a thought for what happens to what you leave behind when you return home. The Wanstead Society is an independent, non-political organisation that works to protect, preserve and improve the local area. Membership is £10 per household per year. Visit wansteadsociety.org.uk

T

he little girl of local legend Carne Griffiths – because he is now a successful artist and a member of Leytonstone’s community of artists from way back – was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a condition where her internal organs were where her heart and lungs should have been. Carne explains that he and his wife kept the news to themselves leading up to the birth. The people at University College Hospital warned the worried parents that she had just a 50% chance of survival, and the biggest risk was that she wouldn’t be able to breathe when she was born. “It was crazy,” Carne remembers. “They dropped the screen in the operating theatre and I heard a scream and thought ‘that’s my boy… no, that’s my girl!’” He was told that was the best sign ever, that she was born and able to function, although the poor thing went straight into intensive care, all swollen with the effects of the condition. After three days and a tricky operation, which didn’t go well because of an unanticipated heart condition, her organs were put back in the right place and her diaphragm patched up. Years later, she is technically signed off, with one final visit due on 5 September. “We are in a lucky place,” continues Carne. “We spent about three months in hospital and nearly lost her twice. When I was feeding her once she went blue, as she took milk directly into her lungs. On numerous occasions, it has been so close, so it has always been something we’ve been aware of. We are lucky to be where we are now and that’s why I try to raise money for charities when I can.” This he does by arranging huge exhibitions in the corridors of Norlington Studios where, despite having moved to Hastings, he still creates his own work every week. Usually, as part of the Leytonstone Arts Trail, Carne puts out an open call to artists and gets a huge response from artists in Wanstead, Woodford and ex-locals from all over South East England. The first time they did it, when the theme was ‘memorabilia’, Carne redecorated the entire studios with friends, even paying to get rid of the pigeon trouble to make the area a better

place for people to hang their work. He brought in things to make the exhibition a spectacle, such as jukeboxes for childhood tunes and a flamboyant bar. He decided he was happy to spend so much to make money for the charity. This year was less extravagant but equally well attended, and just as successful. The change was because Carne realised the auction worked better than anything else, so they kept that part of the event. The artist Pure Evil once donated a print for auction, then a Christmas exhibition was held for Homes Charity and another auction was held. 100 Square Foot was where loads of people stepped forward and paid to show their work in a square foot of space. He explains: “It [the exhibition] is a vehicle for people to show their work and it’s great we can support the work of locals at this level. Some artists can’t donate money to charity and aren’t in a position to sell their work. Great Ormond Street doesn’t allow you to set a formal percentage, so I say to the artist they should donate what they want.” He continues: “This might not be the most efficient way to raise money but it is the most transparent. It is easiest to show people what we’ve done, and while we don’t always raise a lot of money, we do raise awareness, and gathering people together is important, too.” Although Leytonstone Arts Trail and this exhibition are over, some of the art is still up, and you would be welcome to donate to Great Ormond Street Hospital on your own or by contacting Carne, who will also be exhibiting at Bare Brew during Art Trail Wanstead next month. The importance of play The importance of play is often underestimated, says Shona O’Neill from Wanstead’s Little Bear’s Nursery, who would like to encourage all parents to be aware of their child’s development

N

ot only does structured play provide an excellent platform for learning, but it also establishes bonds, develops communication, encourages active learning skills and allows children to explore the world around them through experimentation, questioning and observing outcomes. Learning through play underpins the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and stresses the importance of the adults’ role in creating a safe, challenging environment to facilitate, support and extend learning opportunities. Parents are a child’s first educator, with research showing that babies are preprogrammed to respond to their parents’ voices and faces. Simple games that babies love, such as peek-a-boo, enable them to acquire new skills and further their understanding of the world around them in a secure environment. Young children learn very quickly, and by making learning fun, they become absorbed in these activities, developing their concentration skills. Through play, they gradually build up a sense of their own identity and an understanding of their own abilities. Activities and resources need to be developmentally appropriate and the focus should not only be on the outcome but also the process. Adults should ask questions to promote exploration and understanding. Children should not be afraid of making mistakes, as this is all part of the learning journey. Children learn best in a warm and caring environment, where adults take an interest in their well-being and value their achievements.

Many Early Years’ settings will assign a key worker to be that significant person who will also liaise with the family to discuss their child’s achievements and create a programme of next steps for learning. Nursery environments are often structured into areas corresponding to the EYFS framework’s learning areas, including role play (exploring relationships and skills in context), construction (developing mathematical, design and collaboration and negotiation skills), sand and water play (discovering volume, capacity and displacement), art (encouraging creative expression), music (to expand a child’s vocabulary and sense of rhythm) and outdoor play (for a sense of freedom and adventure). The Department for Education offers a guide for parents outlining the different stages of a child’s development entitled What to Expect, When? For more information about how children learn and develop and to download a free copy of the What to Expect, When? guide, visit wavidi.co/parentsguide

Looking deeper Paul Conway has amassed a vast collection of vintage, threedimensional images, some of which he will be showing at Wanstead Library this month. Here, he introduces his animal stereographs

T

his month, I have been given the opportunity of presenting my collection of early three-dimensional photographs on behalf of the Redbridge Museum and Heritage Service at the newly reopened Wanstead Library. As a collector, I have around 3,000 stereographs (3D photographs) from the 19th and 20th centuries, along with a number of special image viewers, including the Viewmaster. The stereographs range in subject matter widely, from the First World War to travel and wildlife. In all cases, the images create the illusion of depth by presenting the viewer with two two-dimensional photographs taken from different angles at the same time. These images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of depth in much the same way as our own vision. It was an expensive process and therefore only for the select few. Indeed, it is a limited experience today, despite even David Attenborough’s best efforts. The stereograph is a masterful art, one that captured a period of history no written word could replace and no science can reproduce. The depth created by the viewing devices and the quality of the photographs give the images an immersive character. On this occasion, the public, and in particular the young, will have the unique experience of viewing my animal stereographs. What is especially interesting is that many of these originate from the Victorian era. Imagine in those times how rare it would have been to see the world’s great range of wildlife, apart from their related domestic friends. Remember, zoos were scarce then and world

travel – or even local travel – was extremely limited for the vast majority. So, apart from the few encounters with local fauna and seeing others illustrated in books and newspapers, people in general had little opportunity to see the wildlife with which we are so familiar today. These images were therefore embraced by the Victorians; having the ability to see animals in their natural habitat in your own home was truly amazing. The images will be combined with some additional special effects from our more recent scientific developments. So, thanks to the library service, you will be offered a glimpse into the past via the stereograph and the Viewmaster. Paul’s presentation, which is free to attend, is aimed at six- to 12-year-olds and will take place at Wanstead Library on 4 August from 1.30pm to 4pm. For more information, call 020 8708 7400

Stay open for business Lasting Powers of Attorney should be the cornerstone of an effective business continuity plan for companies of all sizes, says Devorah Ormonde of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

P

rudent business owners may have had the foresight to purchase Key Person Insurance, but this will not assist with the practicalities of running the business if that key person is ill or injured and unable to work or make decisions. For that reason, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are frequently being used by business owners to protect their business interests in the event they or their key colleagues become incapacitated. For business owners who travel as part of their business, having a business LPA for property and financial affairs that can be used while the donor has mental capacity makes sense to ensure the continuity of the business during their absence. Once registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, it will allow an attorney to make financial decisions and sign documentation on the donor’s behalf, and the authority would also continue if the donor subsequently loses mental capacity. The attorney’s powers can be limited depending on the needs of the business but could include buying and selling property, organising property insurance and repairs, accessing bank statements, opening and closing bank accounts, investing assets and dealing with tax affairs. If the attorney is another person working in the business rather than a family member, it may be desirable to restrict the powers so the attorney is not able to manage the donor’s personal property and financial matters. A separate LPA may be made to deal with personal affairs. The first step in preparing a business LPA is to assess the structure of the business. For sole traders, the owner can execute an LPA to appoint any attorney to act on their behalf. Using LPAs in partnerships depends on whether there is a partnership agreement that

allows for an attorney to take decisions on behalf of a partner. Where no such agreement exists, in the event that one of the partners becomes mentally incapable, an application to court may be needed to remove the partner on the basis that the person is incapable of adhering to the partnership terms. For companies, it is necessary to review the articles of association as directors cannot delegate their functions as a director unless the articles specifically provide for this. In many cases, the director will also own shares in the company. Therefore, a solution may be for the owner of the shares to have an LPA to ensure business continuity by the attorneys, who can appoint a new director in the event of the donor’s incapacity. Before an attorney accepts their role, it is important they fully understand their responsibilities, and they may need to take out their own personal liability insurance to ensure they are protected whilst acting on a donor’s behalf. As ever, there is no substitute for good advice. If you are thinking of setting up an LPA or have been asked to become an attorney, ensure you speak to a solicitor. Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 18th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Anila Hussain explains how taking photos is a world away from the stresses of her daily life

M

© Anila Hussain

y passion for photography started a while ago, just using my iPhone. I purchased my first DSLR (a Nikon D3200) two years ago, and it all went crazy from there. I lead a very stressful life working shifts for our amazing emergency services and being the sole carer for my 82-year-old mum. I’d say photography has saved my life – it’s my world away from everything related to stress. I wish there were more hours in the day to pursue it further. I started with travel photography, newborns and toddlers, then moved on to ballet (which I love), theatre and jazz and blues gigs and events. I am now addicted to street photography and to finding obscure candid photography opportunities. I’m obsessed with perspectives. I had my first exhibition in April in Shoreditch at the Espacio Gallery and another in Edinburgh in July entitled Threads. My third exhibition in London Bridge this September will be called Illusion. I grab every opportunity that comes my way, so I can experience it and never look back with regret.

for not one person to see the subject in the same way – everyone is unique. I’ve often had conversations with others from the walks: “Gosh, when did you take that? Were we on the same group walk?” In hindsight, it’s now a challenge not to snap the obvious but to find a different perspective.

I have just upgraded to a Fuji XT2. A variety of lenses has opened up more opportunities to snap architecture and try food photography, which has been a lot of fun. I think in photography there should be no limit to what you can snap. It truly does come from the heart – you see something, you feel it and you capture it. It’s been an incredible journey of self-discovery. I’m an entirely different person and I realise how creative I can be when armed with my camera.

My photography is a journey of creativity and an obsession with perspectives that continues and will do so for the foreseeable future.

Event group shoots and photo walks have been a great meeting point. It is possible for 100 people to attend the same event but

The Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society has helped with the workshops, competitions and outings we have. Their down-to-earth nature, help and advice are also very encouraging. I just wish I had more time to be involved with them more.

nrolling on a masters in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art allowed me to explore my creative preoccupations and, in particular, cemented my love of drawing on location. Drawing on location is a great way of recording a place and its idiosyncrasies. I have a great love of collecting and use drawing as a way of building up a library of things I can use at any time, as well as a way of remembering. The most seemingly insignificant thing can provide inspiration; ideas which can be built on and formulated into a story or illustration at a later stage. My first published picture book, The Boy Who Lost His Bumble, was conceived at the very end of my masters. At the time, I was lodging in a house with a beautiful Victorian garden bursting with flowers and bees. I spent many evenings sat in the garden drawing but at some point during the summer it started to rain. It rained for what seemed like weeks and it didn’t want to stop! The bees went away, and that formed the starting point of the story. As I worked on The Boy Who Lost His Bumble, portraying the idea of loss in a very subtle way to young readers became increasingly important. Picture books can be appreciated on a purely visual, entertaining level; however, they are also capable of dealing with complex issues and can help children understand difficult concepts. We’ve all lost our bumble at some point. More recently, I have joined Brolly Lolly, a collective of children’s book illustrators. Our work has been described as imaginative, sensitive, humorous and ‘slightly off the wall’. We work in a range of media pursuing a variety of deeply personal interests, but have a common goal in making illustration that is brilliantly evocative. Our first joint publication, Lolly, is an interactive magazine aimed at children aged three and up, and showcases artwork by individual members of the Brolly Lolly collective. Each issue is based on a central theme and invites creative participation from children (and their adults). Lolly not only

gives us, as illustrators for children, a chance to collaborate with each other, but also the opportunity to engage with our core audience of children in a more direct and playful way. Inspired by the wild beasts featured in the first issue of Lolly, I’ll be leading a fun, animalthemed workshop of crafts and drawing at Wanstead Library this month. Trudi’s craft workshop for four- to 10-yearolds will take place at Wanstead Library on 19 August from 2pm to 3pm (free). For more information, call 020 8708 7400.
