Welcome... It’s hard to imagine how historians of the future will reflect on what we currently call the present day. Occasionally, there are high-profile events that give us pause for thought about how they will be viewed in years to come. Whether that be a referendum that changes a country’s political landscape or an act of terror that causes far-reaching pain and suffering, it is easy to identify the more obvious topics that will feature in future textbooks. But it is also clear that there will be significant interest in the more subtle events that fill our collective contemporary calendars. We need only look at the modern-day demand for researching family and local history to see that the once seemingly mundane can become objects of fascination and intrigue with the passage of time. This is by no means a suggestion that the small-scale, local events we enjoy today – which will eventually offer historians a glimpse into lives once lived – are mundane. Far from it. They may not make national or international headlines, but the festivals, trails, screenings, workshops and talks – of which Wanstead has no shortage – are each a reflection of important aspects of many people’s lives. And they are equally a reflection of the health of the community in which they take place. There is a plaque dating from 1752 on the side of The George public house that marks a cherry pie-related incident (pies were a feature of 18th-century local rural festivals). The specifics of the incident itself are subject to debate, but the fact that debate exists is an important point, one that highlights the power of community interest. Fast forward 264 years and while cherries and pies may feature less prominently now, the festivities continue. And if pies be the food of a community’s love, then Wanstead certainly ate Lee Marquis, Editor them all.

Draw up your serious and not-so-serious suggestions for Evergreen Field Art Group Wanstead are encouraging local residents to get creative and draw up their ideas for how Evergreen Field – the fenced-off patch of land next to Christchurch Green – could be used. Adults and children are invited to illustrate their suggestions using any art form they wish as a part of Art Trail Wanstead, which runs from 10 to 25 September. “Ideas can be practical, thought-provoking or purely fun,” said trail coordinator Kim Judge. “This would be a great project for children in the holidays. Wanstead Village: public consultation on new Redbridge ward boundaries

The final Music in Wanstead Park was ‘blessed by sunshine and a very warm and enthusiastic crowd’. “‘You can’t not do it again,’ was a frequent refrain,” said organiser Gill James of the Aldersbrook Families Association, which has organised the annual festival since 2000 and now plans to stage smaller events in the future. Highlights at last month’s celebrations included the London School of Samba and the Wanstead High School Music Department. “Thank you Aldersbrook and Wanstead. You have not heard the last of us…” added Gill.

Residents are invited to have their say on recommendations for new ward boundaries across Redbridge. It follows a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission, which aimed to ensure that all councillors represent approximately the same number of voters. Among the proposals is the creation of a Wanstead Village ward (covering the northern part of Wanstead) and a Wanstead Park ward (covering the southern part of Wanstead and Aldersbrook). The consultation runs until 22 August. Visit wavidi.co/wards

Green-fingered Wanstead resident Teresa Farnham will be opening her garden to the public on 14 August from 12pm to 4.30pm (adults: £5; children: free) as part of the National Gardens Scheme, which raises money for good causes. After building an extension in 2010, the garden of 17 Greenstone Mews was reduced to a five-metre square patch. “The tiny space has certainly changed the way I look at gardening,” said Teresa, who planted a strawberry tree that has now reached a height of four metres. Danny the Champion of the World: final summer show in Wanstead Park

Leading the way: celebrating 30 years of guide dog training in Redbridge

Wanstead Park’s annual outdoor theatre season will come to a close this month with a performance of Roald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World. The show – which will take place on 16 August from 3pm (under-3s: £2.95; under-16s: £8.95; over-16s: £14.95) – follows two performances by touring theatre group Illyria in the park’s Temple enclosure in July. The summer shows – which welcome picnics and also offer hot and cold refreshments – are now a popular regular fixture in park’s calendar. Call 020 7332 1911

A family fun day will take place at the Redbridge Guide Dogs Training School in Woodford Green next month to celebrate the centre’s 30th anniversary. “At about 14 months of age, a dog is mature enough to begin its formal training, so it comes to one of four guide dog training schools around the country – including Redbridge – to start its early training, said a spokeswoman for the centre, which is home to around 90 dogs at any one time. Redbridge: proud to call it home

The Mayor of Redbridge was among civic leaders from across London and Essex who attended a recent reception at Haven House Children’s Hospice to hear the Woodford Green charity’s plans to increase the number of children that it supports to 500 per year by 2020. The increase will mean it will cost £5 million a year to run the hospice, which only receives a quarter of its funding from the government. Visit wavidi.co/hh

The Mayor of Redbridge with members of the Wanstead Playground Association

Members of the Wanstead Playground Association welcomed the Mayor of Redbridge, Councillor Gurdial Bhamra, to the newly refurbished play area on Christchurch Green last month. The official opening of the transport-themed playground follows an 18-month community-led campaign that raised £103k to improve the site, which was originally installed in the 1980s. Representatives from Vision RCL, who oversaw the installation of the new equipment, and other local councillors were also present.

A a two-week programme to help three- to five-year-olds and their parents prepare for nursery will take place at Aldersbrook Children’s Centre this month. Local schools take part in a Model United Nations debate

In order to document a life which is unknown to most of us, local photographer Mike Edwards has been accompanying Kevin Murphy and Sharee Hunte from High Street fishmonger Wanstead Fish on their early morning (3am) visits to Billingsgate Market. “The present day Billingsgate Market opened in Poplar in 1982 and it is inevitably going to be moved out of London because of land prices,” said Mike, who is exhibiting a small selection of the resulting images at Wanstead Fish until September.

Pupils from 12 local schools visited Snaresbrook’s Forest School last month to take part in a Model United Nations debate, an academic competition in which students learn about diplomacy and international relations. Each school was given a country to represent and had to put forward a resolution and answer other nations’ questions in the hope of winning support. Following two debates, Bangladesh (Wanstead High School), and Australia (The Forest Academy) were successful and had their resolutions endorsed.

Empowering women

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced improvements to deal with traffic congestion at Redbridge Roundabout, including a new signal timing strategy. “Having visited the area… I made a firm commitment to produce an outline plan to address concerns about congestion, air quality and road safety,” said the Mayor. The changes are being trialled and monitored by TfL.

A group of three women will be hosting an event at Wanstead Library this month with the aim of bringing local women together to start something ‘positive and empowering’. The talk on 20 August (1pm to 4pm) – which is free to attend – will highlight religious messages to encourage change in women’s lives. “God has given us this vision and we want to share it,” said organiser Lynnette Brathwaite. Floating pennywort treatment gets underway in Wanstead Park

Floating pennywort

Monthly herbicide applications to combat the growth of floating pennywort in Wanstead Park’s Perch Pond have begun. “It is too early to tell how successful the first herbicide treatment has been… Sadly, this is one of those long term consistent effort tasks rather than a one-off quick solution,” said Geoff Sinclair, head of operations for Epping Forest. To prevent the spread of the invasive plant, water is no longer allowed to flow from Perch Pond into the Ornamental Water and ways of overcoming this are being considered.

In Wanstead A group of 15 local photographers will be displaying their work at an exhibition curated by Geoff Wilkinson at his Nightingale Lane gallery next month. Each participant has been asked to present three images, one of which must be a scene in Wanstead. Here, two of the photographers discuss their work

Helen Simpson Wanstead Station was designed by Charles Holden in the 1930s but not completed until after World War Two in 1947. It is a striking modernist structure and is one of my favourite Wanstead buildings – concrete and geometrical. It is also a landmark for being nearly home and our beloved High Street. I am currently obsessed with clouds, light and form when taking photographs, and this photo I think uses the light and shadow to advantage, making a simple structure look imposing. I took up photography about five years ago, being taught by Geoff at Gallery 84. I enjoy the focus needed to take a photograph, thinking about the composition and light and learning how to use my camera effectively. It is a completely different skill to my day job and I enjoy having a new challenge. I have even sold three photographs – not quite enough to give up work, but enough to inspire me for the future.

Adam Lee Brown I took this photo of a violinist who was busking on Wanstead High Street during the monthly farmers’ market. There was such a good buzz and I think this image typifies the family, friendly and sociable character that Wanstead has in abundance. The cafés were bustling, the sun was shining and everyone was enjoying their day. I have been taking photographs since I could first pick up a camera but have only recently begun to study photography and develop my own style. The thrill of capturing the right moment, with the perfect composition and exactly what you want to share with others, is a very satisfying and enjoyable moment.

The exhibition will be on display at the Eightyfour gallery, Nightingale Lane, Wanstead from 3 to 17 September. A charity night on 10 September will raise funds for Haven House Children’s Hospice. For more information, call 020 8530 1244

Step back in time Jef Page from the Ilford Historical Society will be leading a leisurely family walk around Wanstead this month. Here, Jef offers an overview of some of the area’s well known and less well known landmarks

T

The pub, originally called The George and Dragon, was a small local inn on the corner of George Lane (now the Eastern Avenue). Around 1904 it was completely redesigned and enlarged into the pinnacled building we see today. Across the road where the station is now, was Elm House, a grand 18th-century mansion built in 1740 where William Penn once lived. He gave his name to Pennsylvania, USA. But what really makes The George interesting is the ‘Cherry Pey’ stone, shaped like a small gravestone cemented high up into the wall, which celebrates a magnificent 1752 local cherry harvest and pie. On The Green – called George Green after King George – can be seen the drinking fountain, first erected in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. The fountain has led a nomadic life, having moved to its present position from various locations. From the pub we will move along the High Street at a leisurely pace: the walk is easy, flat, no hills and will take place whatever the weather (please come prepared). The Wanstead Kinema (1913–1956) seated 500 and was a popular cinema, bingo and snooker hall alongside The George. Stone Hall is now the Manor Hall restaurant but was once used as the Conservative Club, whilst beside it were similar houses, all demolished or only surviving behind shopfronts. he Wanstead Heritage Walk will be a leisurely, historical guided stroll around the town. Find out about the Cherry Pie stone, Elm House, The Green and water fountain, Christ Church and more. The walk will start at The George public house, opposite Wanstead Tube Station.

The George, Wanstead, circa 1906

Much of ‘olde Wanstead’ was 18th century, such as the small timber and brick cottages between Grove Park and Grove Road. Wanstead Place has some interesting old houses and we will view the villa in Grosvenor Road, bought and part-owned by Charles Dickens. On the corner of the High Street and Grove Park is the Corner House (now the Allan Burgess Centre, used by Age UK). It is named after a Dr Corner and has on its walls pargeting (plaster mouldings and terracotta panels) and high up under the roof gable, a sundial. We will move on to look at the exterior of Christ Church, the War Memorial and we may also walk up to the Weaver’s Cottages, New Wanstead if there’s time. The walk will finish at Wanstead Library, Spratt Hall Road. The Wanstead Heritage Walk will take place on 18 August from 2pm to 3.15pm (meet at The George pub). The event is free, but booking is required –call 020 8708 7400 or visit wavidi.co/walk1

Waste of space Following the arrival – and eventual departure – of squatters in the former Barclays building, Scott Wilding of the Wanstead Society explains why he thinks the temporary residents made a valid point

O

Squatting is an illegal activity and the police and the current owner, Sainsbury’s, issued an eviction notice requiring the group to move on, which they eventually did a few weeks later. However, the responsibility for the site must lie with the owners and the squatters made a valid point. Sainsbury’s made a profit of £471 million in the financial year ending March 2016, yet Wanstead has a building that has, for two years, employed no-one, contributed nothing to the community and paid substantially less in business rates and other taxes than an operating business would; yet Britain’s third largest supermarket allows this site to go unused. Empty buildings fall into disrepair, decay and are left vulnerable to issues like squatting and damage, which lets the High Street and local people down. The Wanstead Society wrote to Sainsbury’s to ask what plans it has for the site, but as yet has not had a reply. If the supermarket doesn’t want to move in, why not sell the site so that it can be used and contribute to the community? This is a prime site for any new business to thrive, provide employment and offer a service to shoppers, but it can’t until the owners get their act together. There are at least two further sites on the High Street that lie empty – although we have a new butcher and the greengrocer is, at the time of writing, renovating, so it’s not all bad news.

© Geoff Wilkinson

n 15 June a group of people moved into the former Barclays bank site on Wanstead High Street – which is squatting. The group claimed they were peaceful and hoped to get on with their new neighbours. Their aim was to make a point that there is a housing crisis and buildings like this shouldn’t go unused.

The Council could incentivise corporate owners of unused buildings to make use of them or sell them by charging more Council Tax if a commercial premises lies empty for more than a year. This might be part of the answer to the housing shortage. To prevent this from happening again, local people need to lobby those in power to offer incentives for businesses to make use of buildings, not let them stand empty. Our High Street can’t afford the price of urban decay. In the meantime, whatever your view on the squatters, we can’t lay all the responsibility on them. As every homeowner knows, with ownership comes responsibility – and Sainsbury’s is responsible for the site. So come on Sainsbury’s, make your mind up on what you want to do with this building and help make Wanstead a better place. Every little helps, you know! Fringe friends The fourth Wanstead Fringe is just weeks away and this year there is a new way for people to get involved and help support this communityled celebration. Friend of the Fringe Jenny Burbage reports

I

t seems hard to believe that the Wanstead Fringe is already in its fourth year – it seems only yesterday that it started as the result of a spur-of-themoment blog post. And now it’s firmly part of Wanstead’s cultural year – but the beauty of it is that it’s really a homemade festival. In case you don’t know, the Fringe is a weeklong celebration of events, which takes place at venues all around Wanstead. It includes music, talks, open-air cinema, comedy, workshops, photo lectures and walks, a jumble trail and more. Last year, more people than ever took part in the various events, including dozens of budding illustrators who packed into the High Street’s Oxfam shop to hear tips of the trade from artist Chris Drew. Another highlight was a theatrical kangaroo court for William Pole-Tylney Long-Wellesley, the man whose recklessness led to the grand Wanstead House being demolished and sold off for scrap. The script for the trial was written by local author Geraldine Roberts, whose book The Angel and the Cad vividly tells the tragic story. Mark Stephens, Wanstead’s celebrated legal mind, played the judge and local author John Rogers played Wicked William, rabble-rousing the crowd on Christchurch Green, but ending up being pelted with wet sponges. The Wanstead Fringe had its origins in an ill-thought-through post on local blog Wansteadium, which wondered why, when big festivals like Edinburgh and even the Chelsea Flower Show had their own fringes, shouldn’t the Wanstead Festival have its own one too? The idea took hold – people volunteered, businesses joined in, events were hastily arranged and just six weeks later the first Wanstead Fringe took place.

Artist Chris Drew took part in last year’s Wanstead Fringe

This year’s Fringe will be held between 10 and 17 September, the week running up to the Wanstead Festival on 18 September. It will keep its homemade spirit, though it is again supported by the generosity of Petty Son and Prestwich. It will include some old favourites (including the Kinema) but will also feature some innovative new events as well. And for the first time there is another way for people to get involved. You can now join people like me and become a Friend of the Wanstead Fringe (adults: £10; couples: £15; families: £25). Patrons (£100) too would be very welcome. This will give you advance information about bookings, special events, extra goodies and, more importantly, the knowledge that you are helping to secure the long-term future of the Fringe, which is good for all of us. Wanstead Fringe 2016 will run from 10 to 17 September. In

memory of . . .

In the third of a series of articles looking at the lives behind the names found on the memorials and plaques at St Mary's Church in Wanstead, EoLFHS members explore the life of John Morice, who died in 1638

T

he earliest surviving records for Wanstead’s parish church start in 1640, so there is no record of John Morice’s birth – which is estimated to be around 1600 – or the name of his mother. We know from his memorial that he was a captain, but have been unable to ascertain in which service: army, navy or merchant fleet. Only from his memorial do we know that he was the son of Francis Morice, Clerk of the King’s Ordnance, and that his wife, Alice, was the daughter of Jerome Heydon. However, our research has revealed a great deal about Francis Morice, the Heydon family and the world in which John Morice lived. Francis Morice was closely involved with government matters from at least 1604, when he possibly worked for the Speaker of the Commons, Sir Edward Phelips. Sir Edward was a prosecutor at the trial of the perpetrators of the Gunpowder Plot in that year and his evidence was instrumental in their conviction. Francis was closely connected with Sir Edward’s youngest son, also named Francis. The two men, along with various other ‘London gentlemen’, acquired properties and parish benefices all over England and then sold them on for a profit. They used their connections to the government and King James to facilitate this business, which continued for several years. Alice’s father, Jerome Heydon, was one of the merchants to whom King James granted a charter to establish the Virginia Company of America, later expanded to include the Bermuda Company. Jerome died in 1616 and his widow, Agnes, married Francis Morice several years later. In 1632 Francis’s son and heir, Captain John, married his father’s stepdaughter, Alice, so the settlement of

32

property agreed at the time of the marriage resulted in all property remaining in the family. John and Alice Morice had no children, and after his death in 1638, Alice was a widow for several years before remarrying and living in Walsham le Willows, where she died in 1679. In her will her wish was to be buried in Wanstead, and she lies in the churchyard there. Does this suggest her marriage to Captain John Morice was actually a love match and that her love survived the many years between their deaths? At the time of his death, John Morice was living in Havering Park and his mother-inlaw, Agnes, was living with her children in his house in Wanstead. However, he left the house to his wife Alice, not to Agnes, and we can only speculate on the resulting domestic arrangements within the family. A booklet documenting the memorials in St Mary the Virgin Church, Overton Drive, Wanstead is being prepared by members of the East of London Family History Society (EoLFHS) and will be available for sale later this year. August 2016 Studios, Building Bloqs and Islington Arts Factory. I have also exhibited in Lisbon as part of the Man Power Festival 2015 and at the Banasthali Women’s Institute in Jaipur during my art residency there in 2011. In my personal artwork I employ a mix of media and techniques, drawing, collage and printmaking. I play with elements of chance, control and repetition. Through the use of free associations, vivid imagination and often personal symbols from my inner world, I like distorting reality and attempting to go ‘beyond’ what’s in front of my eyes. I am really looking forward to taking part in this year’s Art Trail Wanstead – it is a great opportunity to get to know local artists, to interact with the local community and to share the fruits of our creativity with the public. During the trail I will be exhibiting some of my work related to the themes of animal and human nature. I am inspired by how animals represent certain aspects of human nature and how we, as human beings are, after all, still very much raw animals. I will also exhibit some artworks that are inspired by the concept of public and personal idols.

I

am from Padova, Italy. I have been living in London for many years. I graduated in Fashion Design studies from Italy and in Art and Design from Central Saint Martins College in London. I have been working mostly in London as a designer in fashion and theatre and have been involved in a variety of art installation projects for companies and collaborations with other professional designers. As an artist I have exhibited in London in a number of alternative spaces and galleries, such as Bemerton Art

Along with this, I will offer a couple of art workshops for the community (check the Art Group Wanstead website for details) that are linked to the idea of transforming, reworking and reimagining idols, public figures and both old and new masters – perfect for our current political and social situation. I hope many will join because it will be fun! Reality of rental regulations With the rental sector becoming increasingly strictly regulated, more and more landlords are falling foul of the rules and facing substantial fines, says Ruhul Ameen of local solicitors Wiseman Lee

T

here are now estimated to be as many as two million private landlords in the UK, renting out 22% of all homes – a huge increase on the 9% of homes in the private rental sector 30 years ago. We are not talking here about slum landlords – when prosecuted, such people get precisely what they deserve – but about smaller, often amateur, landlords who are prosecuted either because they don’t know the rules, or because the rules have changed and they have not changed with them. An obvious example is the number of landlords who are not following the requirements relating to tenants’ deposits. One estimate suggests that up to 300,000 landlords are not following the correct procedure. At the same time, Local Authorities are far from turning a blind eye to breaches of their own, often arcane, regulations. On the contrary, prosecuting miscreant landlords is a lucrative source of revenue for many councils, though they are also motivated by a desire to improve housing standards in their areas. What is becoming clear is that the days of the amateur landlord are numbered. None of the rules recently introduced are, in themselves, earth-shattering. For the most part they involve things that landlords should be or ought to be doing already. However, there are now so many of these rules that, taken together, the regulatory burden on landlords (and their agents) has become significantly more onerous. In particular, there is the problem that, unless and until they comply with certain key regulations, landlords will no longer be able to evict their tenants under the ‘no fault’ section 21 procedure. This is hugely significant – being unable to quickly evict an unsatisfactory tenant can cost landlords thousands of pounds – for example,

in lost rent and potential damage to their properties. Complying with the new regulations will involve setting up strict procedures to be followed when renting out a property. Landlords and agents will need to make sure, not only that things are done at the proper time, but also that they will be able to prove they were done. Tenants are almost certainly going to be claiming that these procedures were not carried out, particularly in the context of section 21 eviction proceedings. If the tenants are right, this could prove costly for landlords but also for agents, who will be vulnerable to claims for compensation from their landlord clients if the failure of the eviction claim was due to the agent’s failure to comply with the rules. Proper procedures will also need to be put into place to deal with complaints about the property’s condition, and detailed records of all contact with the tenant should be kept. As ever, if you are considering renting out a property, there is no substitute for professional advice. For more advice on becoming a landlord, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000

P

lum duff is a rather old term for plum pudding, which we now know as Christmas pudding. But where’s the plums in a Christmas pudding, I hear you ask? Christmas puddings were originally filled with a variety of meats, which had to be prepared long in advance for the 12-day feast for rich and poor alike. So they needed to have a preservative added to stop the meat rotting. Since the earliest cultures, both sugars and salts have been used as a preservative, but when sugar and honey were too expensive or unavailable, dried fruits like currants were used instead. Then, in the mid-1500s in the UK, the addition of prunes became popular. Of course, prunes are dried plums, and that’s the connection. Come the 18th century, sugar was becoming cheaper and was more commonly used for preservation purposes, making dried fruits available for other uses. The meat was phased out of the Christmas pudding, being replaced with a greater variety of dried fruits. But the name plum pudding has stuck around almost to the modern day, despite the lack of plums. You won’t find prunes in the USA, as its name has acquired a somewhat negative connotation, being associated with wrinkles, old age and sluggish gastrointestinal tracts. To help overcome this stigma, they have been informally christened with a name that reflects their heritage, the ‘dried plum’. Plums are one of the oldest known cultivated fruits. Over 2,000 varieties are in existence,

with the earliest recorded in China thousands of years ago. China produces, by far, the most plums in the world, six million tonnes per year, almost 10 times more than the runners-up, India. The UK doesn’t even enter the top 10.

Wanstead resident Mike Edwards has a passion for preparing food and drink from ingredients he has grown or foraged for himself. Here he reveals his recipe for ‘spicy street plum chutney’ in the fourth of a series of articles exploring unsung heroes of the fruit and veg world zz of Mike’s recipe for spicy plum chutney: zz 1kg of plums*, halved, stoned and finely chopped (if the plums are small, cook them first until just tender, cool, then remove the stones with clean fingers) zz Three onions, finely chopped zz 100g of dried raisins zz One tbsp of finely grated root ginger zz One tbsp of black mustard seeds zz One tbsp of ground cumin zz One tbsp of paprika zz One tsp of chilli flakes zz 400ml of red wine vinegar zz 500g of light muscovado sugar zz Put all the ingredients, except the sugar, into a large pan and stir well. Bring slowly to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes. zz Stir in the sugar, plus two tsp of salt, and keep stirring until it has dissolved. Boil the chutney for 20 to 30 minutes, uncovered, stirring occasionally (to prevent it catching on the bottom of the pan) until it is thick and pulpy. Here, you’re likely to see damson, mirabelle, greengage and Victoria in the greengrocers. But I rather like the ‘flowering plum’, Prunus cerasifera Nigra, the purple-leafed plum tree. You won’t see its fruit in the shops, but I have found several trees in Wanstead’s streets. Last year I picked enough to make eight jars of plum jam and 10 jars of ‘spicy street plum chutney’! Shame to see them go to waste and mess up the pavement!

zz Pot into sterilised jars, seal, label and store for at least two weeks before eating (will keep for up to six months in a cool dark place and tastes excellent with tangy cheeses). Will taste just as good with plums from the greengrocer.

Good job, good jog GoodGym – a community of runners who combine fitness sessions with improving the local area – launched their Redbridge base in Wanstead last month. Partnership Manager Edward Field reports

G

oodGym was founded in east London in 2009 as a response to two key social issues. In the UK, 64% of the population are either overweight or obese. At the same time, millions of people across the country visit gyms every week, peddling, pushing, lifting and running on expensive machines whilst achieving no external benefits. GoodGym was formed to harness all this wasted energy and turn it into something good for local communities. Thanks to funding from Genesis Housing Association, GoodGym has now launched in Wanstead. Members combine a weekly run with physical tasks, such as gardening, painting and shifting earth in community gardens to help organisations throughout the borough. A qualified trainer leads the runs and is on hand to offer expert advice for those wanting to improve their fitness levels. James Poole, who is the running coach in Wanstead, said: “I am delighted to be combining my passion for running with doing good in my local community, and I am really looking forward to meeting and working with runners from the Redbridge area.” The group will be working alongside a number of established local community groups as they look to compliment the many great projects in the area. At our launch event on 25 July, the group visited a local community allotment and we also have plans to link up with the Wanstead Community Gardeners. Combatting social isolation and loneliness is also a massive part of our aims. With between 29% and 46% of people over 60 saying they feel lonely often or some of the time, some runners will also visit isolated members of the community as part of their workout. A runner

can be paired with an older or vulnerable person in Redbridge, who will be called ‘the coach’ as they become the runner’s motivation to hit the streets. “The introduction of a young, fit and healthy person into my life has had a remarkably beneficial effect on my own self-esteem and confidence”, says Barry, who has been paired with a runner. “A regular exchange of views, coupled with my runner’s progress gives me an interest I was lacking.” Motivation is an important factor for GoodGym members, as Lambeth runner Rebecca points out: “Those lazy weeks when I just want to sit on the sofa, it gets me up, it gets me out there knowing that someone’s waiting.” GoodGym already operates across many different London boroughs, as well as in Bath, Bristol and Chelmsford. Redbridge is our newest location, with a raft of others opening this summer. Our members will be found on Monday evenings throughout the year tending to projects in Wanstead and beyond. GoodGym Redbridge meets at Wanstead House every Monday at 6.45pm (sessions are free to attend and runners of all abilities are welcome). Visit goodgym.org

digital inspiration A free computer coding club will be launching at Wanstead Library in September and children are invited to one of several taster session this month. Library Development Officer Maria Reguera reports

L

earning to code is a valuable skill in a world where new technologies emerge every single day. The Internet of Things (IoT) is already here and our mobile devices are the key to controlling many aspects of our lives, from baby grows that track a child’s breathing, temperature and movements to fridges that generate our shopping list. Nowadays, children are very familiar with new technologies and have a natural talent to grasp basic concepts and learn how to use them. At Wanstead Library we want to give children the opportunity to learn how technology works and how to build it too. We will inspire them to become digital makers, no matter who they are or where they are from. It is a club perfect for children who already have a knack for coding and for those who are still unsure what programming is all about. The library is now part of Code Club, a worldwide movement to give every child in the world the chance to learn to code. Each free club gives nine- to 11-year-olds the skills, confidence and opportunity to change our digital world. Children progress through engaging projects and learn how to program computer games, animations and websites. We hope to start the club next month and run it weekly during term time, with the help of volunteers who have programming skills. At our club children will learn three coding languages with over 50 projects. They will work at their own pace and with each challenge they will improve their understanding of computer science. Children will start by learning to code using Scratch, a free-of-charge programming language and online community, where they create their own interactive stories and

animations. By designing, programming and sharing Scratch projects, children learn to think creatively and reason systematically. They then progress to learn the fundamentals of web developing. The final programming language that children will learn is Python, a widely used, general purpose, text-based language that can be applied to many different problems. It is perfect for beginners and introduces children to basic concepts, such as loops and procedures. And children love the club! We have been running a Code Club at Redbridge Central Library since September 2015 and, in their own words, they enjoy coming to the club because ‘it is fun to design and create things’ and some of them already know they want to be a computer coder. Our aim is to inspire children to complete the club projects and pursue other digital activities in their spare time, in school or as a career. Free Code Club taster sessions will take place from 10am to 11am at Wanstead Library on 10, 17 and 24 August. Booking is required – call 020 8708 7400 or visit wavidi.co/code

Whether you are longing to release the novel inside you or you are keen to hear the experiences of those that already have, Book Signing Saturday is for you. But don’t just take Rhonda Brooks’ word for it

F

ollowing a successful pilot at Redbridge Libraries’ Fabula Festival in 2015, Book Signing Saturday launched at Redbridge Central Library in February. The forthcoming session at Wanstead Library will be the third for this year. Book Signing Saturdays were seen as an alternative to author talks, the success of which can be unpredictable if the author is new or unknown. The original concept was to support the local community by providing a forum for local authors to meet and promote, sign and sell their books. Author participation in the sessions has steadily increased and the following comments illustrate the value of the sessions to the authors who take part. Ian Clark, author of 4.26am: “The group book signings, as an author, have been interesting and invigorating. To discover there are others who struggle with the writing beast inside, who squeeze each word out like the leftovers of toothpaste. Ordinary people, each with stories to tell. The ‘public’ are timid and polite; eventually confessing they too wish to write a book, to let their story speak. The loneliness of a self-published author is a solitude we all share.” Dr Graham Clingbine, author of Disclosure: The Future is Now and Release From Stasis: The Future is Now: “As a local author it has been a pleasure to attend recent Book Signing Saturday events… The meetings have allowed me to meet other local authors and make new friends and contacts. We share our book information with each other, including reading out loud short extracts from our writing and advertising any forthcoming events. General members of the public also attend and interact with our group.”

Authors at a previous Book Signing Saturday event

Jane Grell, author of Praise Songs and White River Blues: “Thanks to the innovative spirit and vision of Redbridge Libraries, local authors are periodically invited to flaunt their wares. I found my first session uplifting, as writers, widely varying in age, gender and ethnicity, engaged in relaxed and informative conversation. Their books ranged from poetry to novels, children’s books to spiritualism, from the self-published to known literary houses. Evidently shared by all were an enthusiasm and optimism, which can only bode well for the continued production of ‘real’ books.” Lyndon Wissart is currently writing his first book: “In October 2015… I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was offered medication and I declined it. 105 days later I had reversed, controlled and now cured my diabetes. I decided to write a book about my story to help other people. My friend Richard invited me to talk about it at the South Woodford Library book signing event. I found this inspiring, motivating and refreshing…” A Book Signing Saturday event will take place on 10 September at Wanstead Library from 12pm to 2pm. For more information, call 020 8708 2409

hardae-Rose thinks she probably started dancing very soon after she learned to walk. By the time she was five years old she was taking regular lessons, and when her teacher told her mother that Shardae-Rose had potential she auditioned for weekend classes in Central London. From there she obtained a scholarship for classes with the Royal Ballet and started going to the Central School of Ballet full time from the age of 14. On graduation into the highly competitive world of ballet she was given a place at the Swiss ballet company Cinevox, and over the next two-and-a-half years she toured with them all over Europe. Now she runs her own company, Black Orchid, which provides theatrical dance services to corporations and private parties as well as providing modelling and brand representation services. They’re a multiskilled lot and specialise in theatrical-style dances, including fire dancing, burlesque and cabaret. “It’s amazing to get paid to do what you love,” she told me. “Now I want to put something back. Also, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” That’s why she started running dance classes for people over 50. Scientific studies show that dance can bring numerous health benefits. As well as the benefits you would get from any regular well-structured exercise program – and the satisfaction that we all get from learning something new – dance helps the development of stronger bones, a healthier heart and lungs, improves balance and engenders a huge reduction in the risk of dementia (and improvement for those who already have it).

In the 28th of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to Shardae-Rose Angel

Reading between the lines it seems that the cost of venue hire means that each class starts at a loss and it takes quite a while to make it break even. That’s part of what makes starting over-50s dance

classes such hard work. First she builds numbers in a class in one location and then, when that starts paying off, she invests extra money into the next location and starts the process again. She has been running classes in Buckhurst Hill and Woodford and is now looking to start in Wanstead in September (her classes run during each academic term). “At Bedford House [Buckhurst Hill] they told me not to get my hopes up, that they’d let me run the class but didn’t think it would work. But it did. It’s not just ladies who come, men come too. One had a bad injury for five years and started ballet. He recently told me he had no more pain and that he comes out of class feeling uplifted and wanting to use the day. It’s such a nice boost when people tell me what they get from the classes.” Shardae-Rose also teaches dance to young people in schools, some as young as two. She has run to raise money for Cancer Research, which is her charity of choice because her grandfather died of cancer.

She smiled when she told me about her last marathon: “It was so hard. I have good stamina for dancing but running was completely different. Afterwards, I was such a wreck!” “I love the charity shops in Wanstead,” Shardae-Rose told me during our recent meeting at The Larder. She continued: “I love that I find great clothes in them and am helping other people too.” Shardae-Rose hasn’t yet confirmed a venue for September’s classes, so if you have an idea or would like to attend, do get in touch. 1215 ...and counting The Wren Wildlife Group have already surpassed their target of finding 1,000 different kinds of plants and animals in the Wanstead area during 2016. Chair Tim Harris reports on the ongoing count

uly and August are the peak months for dragonflies in our area. We don’t see anything like the numbers of their smaller and daintier damselfly cousins, but a walk around any of the lakes in Wanstead Park or Hollow Ponds on a warm day should be guaranteed to produce sightings. The ones to look out for are black-tailed skimmers, which often bask on the ground, emperors, which are the biggest of the lot, common darters, brown hawkers and migrant hawkers. All bar the last of those were seen by local naturalists in early July. Common darter

While we are all familiar with dragonflies’ dashing flight, the pond-dipping activities of Derek and Cathy McEwan at the end of June revealed something of how these intriguing insects spend most of their life: underwater in their larval form (for as long as five years). They hunt worms, leeches, tadpoles and even small fish, before emerging to make their amazing metamorphosis from aquatic to aerial hunters. Aided and abetted by several dozen children (and a few grown-ups), Derek and Cathy’s exploits in Wanstead Park’s Shoulder of Mutton Pond produced the larvae of several black-tailed skimmers, an emperor and a broad-bodied chaser dragonfly. Nearby, an adult skimmer was found eating a common blue damselfly. Other finds from the pond included 19 screech beetles, much to the delight of the assembled children, who had no idea that water beetles could be so noisy. There were also water scorpions, diving beetles, water stick insects, pond skaters, water boatmen and freshwater leeches. With spring migration long since passed and autumn migration not quite started, avian activity was confined to breeding. Birds were quieter and less conspicuous as they sat on

eggs and fed hungry chicks. Plenty of newly fledged starlings, tits and finches could be seen, but no ‘new’ birds were added to our list. In contrast, another wave of wildflowers came into bloom, including dark mullein, rosebay willowherb, wild marjoram, fat hen, common toadflax and greater bird’s-foot trefoil. Several pyramidal orchids spiked in the Old Sewage Works, not far from where the bee orchids were draining of colour. And Paul Ferris found a third species of orchid – common spotted – in the City of London Cemetery. Always one for a new challenge, James Heal scoured Wanstead Flats in search of different grasses. He found 31 species, and the last I heard he was still trying to identify them all! At the time of going to press, July’s finds brought the total score to 1,215 (+148*), made up of 405 plants (+52*), 630 invertebrates (+91*), 116 birds (+0*), 38 fungi (+3*) and 26 miscellaneous (+2*). *Change from June's count.

stranger e-danger From online gaming to uploading photos, PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead Safer Neighbourhoods Team offers some advice to help keep your children safe online

W

e all talk to our children about stranger danger when out and about. But, increasingly, we are noticing that this message does not seem to carry as much weight when using information technology in all its different forms. Is talking to a stranger online using a webcam, text message or microphone headset any different from talking to a stranger in the park? How can we keep our children safe? Limit the amount of time your children spend online and make sure it is supervised. Do not let your children have a computer and webcam in their room. A virus could mean a stranger may have a direct link to your child’s camera, allowing them to view your children’s bedroom when their computer is switched on. Do not allow your child to click on pop-ups or download content without your consent. Make sure the games they play are ageappropriate. The contents are usually age-specific, and the number of children we speak to who actually play these games is fast becoming a worry. Allowing this is no different to letting them watch an 18-rated film when they’re not supposed to. Do not let your children have their own password account details. This might leave you with a bill from an in-game purchase and may also allow them access to adult material. Check their search history and messages. Talk to your children about what they do online. They probably know more than you about the latest games and social media, but you can talk to them about what is appropriate and what isn’t. Always read the small print: when uploading images, sites often gain ownership of those images and could use them for their own gain.

Any image sent is permanently online and any image can easily be duplicated. Images tell a 1,000 words: information can be gleaned from a photo that can be used to gain the trust of a young person, such as what school they go to or what football team they support. A criminal will fish for information no differently to what they do in a phone scam to get bank information. Language children would not dream of using face-to-face is deemed, by some, to be acceptable online and this is the same with images. Indecent images are being sent by children still in primary school to each other. Finally, do not share any images or contact information that is not yours to share: a friend of a friend is still a stranger. For more information, visit ceop.police.uk or thinkuknow.co.uk A police contact point is located at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. 150 not out! To mark the 150th anniversary of Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club, former player and umpire Mike Mead has published a book charting the club's history. In the third of a series of extracts, Mike discusses the development of the club over the last 50 years

M

any of the developments of the club over the last 50 years mirror the general changes in recreational cricket. Reliance on income from the bar and from social activities had to be replaced by other sources of finance, although a healthy income stream centred on the bar has remained important and can peak if the August cricket week is blessed with fine weather. Every effort to develop home-grown talent has centred on the youth and ‘colts’ programme, and eight of the successful 2001 side at the Oval in the final of the Evening Standard Competition and a similar number in the 2012 final of the Kingfisher National Club Championship had originally been Wanstead juniors. 1966 saw the opening of Wanstead’s new pavilion extension and of the new dressingrooms. The operation had been overseen by a steering committee with Martin Seiffert, Alan Russell, Tony Pluck and Eddie Clark playing lead roles. On the field, four sides were now regularly selected and the concept was that these would include two third XIs of ‘equal strength’. This remained contentious for some time, with the ‘extra third XI’ regarded in some circles as, de facto, a fourth XI.

However, over the years the ‘extras’ built up an enviable fixture list, with games on many attractive village grounds in rural Essex and Hertfordshire and this, plus the personality and attitude of Eddie Clark’s elder son, David, who assumed the captaincy in 1971, caused several senior players with a lot of first and second XI experience to opt to continue their cricketing careers with the ‘extras’. They were joined by the ‘colts’, who were ready to move into adult cricket, and the synergy between these two groups was remarkable. Chris Hurd followed Dave Clark as a popular captain until the steady progression of the leagues brought an end to a fixture list that many will remember with affection. In the late 1960s, still playing ‘friendlies’, the first XI retained its prominent position in Home Counties cricket. At that time, a lot of Sunday cricket was against ‘wandering sides’, such as Mediators, Essex Wanderers and Chinghoppers, and some club members had allegiance to the likes of Romany, Incidentals and the Buccaneers. A school of opinion developed that Wanstead-playing members should play for Wanstead only and although some of the wandering sides remain in existence, their significance has diminished.

August 2016

Between 1967 and 1969, Wanstead’s most successful side in terms of results – and probably team spirit and enjoyment – was the second XI. Under the captaincy of the vastly genial and experienced Pat Dillon, they enjoyed a remarkable run of success with an extremely strong fixture list. Dillon was one of the ‘Three Musketeers’ and with Arthur Hayes and Fred Ware joined the club in 1960 and proved most valuable acquisitions. Pat and Fred were excellent batsmen and Arthur a formidable fast bowler. The appointment in 1968 of Peter Rogers saw the club led by a man with wide connections at all levels of the game, who knew that league cricket was inevitable and that reliance on home-grown talent had to be supplemented by an infusion of experienced players from elsewhere. In 1970 this policy did lead to some friction and it has to be admitted that the senior dressing room was not always the happiest of places. Also, 1970 saw a decline in the fortunes of the second XI. Pat Dillon, not in the best of health and already troubled by the deterioration in his eyesight that was to grievously affect the latter years of his life, was no longer able to deliver the heavy scoring of previous seasons and his fallibility somehow spread throughout the team. By 1971 Peter Rogers was able to lead a more settled and cohesive first XI and the second XI was reorganised under a young captain, Alan Scanes, who only had one season at the helm before work took him to St Lucia and thereafter to the United Arab Emirates. The third and extra third XIs, now led by

Tony Pluck and David Clark, provided a high standard of competitive cricket to aspiring and established playing members. Sunday cricket was still thriving, and although attendances were nothing like the large gates of the immediate post-war years, a healthy gathering of spectators – both members and non-members – was to be found at matches at Overton Drive. The social side of the club flourished with annual dinner dances, the very popular stag dinner, regular mid-week events such as bingo and whist drives and a variety of attractions, including treasure hunts and quizzes, ensured that interest was held and the bar income maintained. Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club 18662016 by Mike Mead is available from the club, located on Overton Drive, Wanstead, E11 2LW (price: by donation). Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the 16th of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Sue Rosner looks forward to the beginning of her photographic journey

I

© Sue Rosner

retired last year and decided, probably like many who retire, to take up a hobby. I chose photography as I had plans to travel and wanted to capture those special moments. I had attended a photography workshop at the Gearies Learning Centre and had a chance to try out new things, such as experimenting with low-light photography, Adobe Lightroom and restoring old photos. As a result of these workshops I realised I needed to use a DSLR camera, as I could see the amazing results achieved by other members of the workshop. I had attended a couple of short courses about photography that I found through Time Out and Living Social, but didn’t have time to put into practice what I had learned, so as a result, had used compact cameras. I bought the Panasonic LUMIX TZ 70, which has a zoom of 30x and a viewfinder – ideal for travelling. I was able to get great photos in Norway with this camera. However, I realised its limitations and felt ready to move on to a DSLR. I got a Canon EOS 750D for my trip to India and this really kick-started my learning curve into photography. It has given me the opportunity to view the world differently, to see how light changes the look of things and the importance of composition, and encouraged me to go into London to explore different events. I have also explored the use of post-production techniques to enhance my photographs. I subscribe to Streetlife and saw an entry from Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society advertising their next meeting, so I decided to go along. I was struck with how welcoming and friendly the group was. Being a member has given me opportunities to

photograph new things. We had a trip to a dress rehearsal of the National Ballet Company of Wales and also to a gig in Islington, which enabled me to try out low-light photography. We had a practical session at the club where we looked at macro photography and my photo was used for the Facebook page, which I was very proud of. I even entered one of the competitions and it was really interesting to get a critique of my work. I now feel that I have moved on from being a beginner and am grateful to the club for giving me confidence in my photography. I hadn’t realised the number of different clubs and groups available in the area, so my advice is if you have an interest, look for a group and join.
